The River Vaitarani and the Ripening of Deeds
Verse 1 (garuda.2.47.1)
गरुड उवाच । भगवन्देवदेवेश कृपया परया वद । दानं दानस्य माहात्म्यं वैतरण्याः प्रमाणकम्
garuḍa uvāca bhagavandevadeveśa kṛpayā parayā vada dānaṁ dānasya māhātmyaṁ vaitaraṇyāḥ pramāṇakam
Garuda said: "O Lord, God of gods, tell me out of supreme grace of the greatness of the gift, and the measure of the Vaitarani."
Verse 2 (garuda.2.47.2)
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच । या सा वैतरणी नाम यममार्गे महासरित् । अगाधा दुस्तरा पापैर्दृष्टमात्रा भयावहा
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca yā sā vaitaraṇī nāma yamamārge mahāsarit agādhā dustarā pāpairdṛṣṭamātrā bhayāvahā
Shri Krishna said: "That great river called Vaitarani, upon Yama's road, is unfathomable, hard to cross because of sins, and terrifying at the mere sight of it."
Verse 3 (garuda.2.47.3)
पूयशोणिततोयाढ्या मांसकर्दमसकुंला । पापिनञ्चागतान्दृष्ट्वा नानाभयसमावृता
pūyaśoṇitatoyāḍhyā māṁsakardamasakuṁlā pāpinañcāgatāndṛṣṭvā nānābhayasamāvṛtā
"Full of pus, blood, and water, choked with a mire of flesh; seeing the sinners who have arrived there, it becomes wrapped in manifold terrors."
Verse 4 (garuda.2.47.4)
क्वाथ्यते सत्वरं तोयं पात्रमध्ये घृतं यथा । क्रिमिभिः सङ्कुलं पूयं वज्रतुण्डैः समावृतम्
kvāthyate satvaraṁ toyaṁ pātramadhye ghṛtaṁ yathā krimibhiḥ saṅkulaṁ pūyaṁ vajratuṇḍaiḥ samāvṛtam
"Its water boils rapidly like ghee in a vessel; that pus is teeming with worms whose mouths are like thunderbolts,"
Verse 5 (garuda.2.47.5)
शिशुमारैश्च मकरैर्वज्रकर्तरिकायुतैः । अन्यैश्च जलजीवैश्च हिंसकैर्मांसभेदिभिः
śiśumāraiśca makarairvajrakartarikāyutaiḥ anyaiśca jalajīvaiśca hiṁsakairmāṁsabhedibhiḥ
"and it is filled with river-dolphins and crocodiles fitted with scissor-like blades, and with other violent, flesh-tearing water-creatures."
Verse 6 (garuda.2.47.6)
उद्यान्ति द्वादशादित्याः प्रलयान्ते तथा हि ते । तपन्ति तत्र वै मर्त्याः क्रन्द मानास्तु पापिनः
udyānti dvādaśādityāḥ pralayānte tathā hi te tapanti tatra vai martyāḥ kranda mānāstu pāpinaḥ
"There twelve suns rise, as they do at the end of the cosmic dissolution; there men are scorched, sinners crying out."
Verse 7 (garuda.2.47.7)
हा भ्रातः पुत्र तातेति प्रलपन्ति मुहुर्मुहुः । विचरन्ति निमज्जन्ति ग्लानिं गच्छन्ति जन्तवः
hā bhrātaḥ putra tāteti pralapanti muhurmuhuḥ vicaranti nimajjanti glāniṁ gacchanti jantavaḥ
"Crying 'Alas, brother! Son! Father!' they lament again and again; the creatures there wander, sink down, and, exhausted, fall into despair."
Verse 8 (garuda.2.47.8)
चतुर्विधैः प्राणिगणैर्दृष्टा व्याप्ता महानदी । तरन्ति गोप्रदानेन त्वन्यथा च पतन्ति ते
caturvidhaiḥ prāṇigaṇairdṛṣṭā vyāptā mahānadī taranti gopradānena tvanyathā ca patanti te
"Seeing this great river, thronged with the fourfold host of beings, they cross by the gift of a cow; otherwise they fall in."
Verse 9 (garuda.2.47.9)
मां नरा येऽवमन्यन्ते चाचार्यं गुरुमेव च । वृद्धानन्यांश्चापि मूढास्तेषां वासस्तु तत्र वै
māṁ narā ye'vamanyante cācāryaṁ gurumeva ca vṛddhānanyāṁścāpi mūḍhāsteṣāṁ vāsastu tatra vai
"Those men who dishonor me, and likewise their teacher and guru, their elders and others as well, being deluded — their dwelling is there."
Verse 10 (garuda.2.47.10)
पतिव्रतां साधुशीलामूढां धर्मेषु निश्चलाम् । परित्यजन्ति ये मूढास्तेषां वासस्तु सन्ततम्
pativratāṁ sādhuśīlāmūḍhāṁ dharmeṣu niścalām parityajanti ye mūḍhāsteṣāṁ vāsastu santatam
"Those deluded ones who abandon a devoted, virtuous wife, unshaken in dharma, dwell there continually as well."
Verse 11 (garuda.2.47.11)
विश्वासप्रतिपन्नानां स्वामिमित्रतपस्विनाम् । स्त्रीबालविकलादीनां वधं कृत्वा पतन्ति हि । पच्यन्ते तत्र मध्ये तु क्रन्दमानास्तु पापिनः
viśvāsapratipannānāṁ svāmimitratapasvinām strībālavikalādīnāṁ vadhaṁ kṛtvā patanti hi pacyante tatra madhye tu krandamānāstu pāpinaḥ
"Those who kill a trusting master, a friend, an ascetic, a woman, a child, the disabled, and the like fall in; these sinners are cooked there in its midst, crying out."
Verse 12 (garuda.2.47.12)
शान्तं बुभुक्षितं विप्रंयो विघ्नायोपसर्पति । क्रिमिभिर्भक्ष्यते तत्र यावदाभूतसंप्लवम्
śāntaṁ bubhukṣitaṁ vipraṁyo vighnāyopasarpati krimibhirbhakṣyate tatra yāvadābhūtasaṁplavam
"Whoever approaches a peaceful, hungry brahmin to obstruct him is devoured there by worms until the dissolution of the universe."
Verse 13 (garuda.2.47.13)
ब्राह्मणाय प्रतीश्रुत्य यमार्थं न ददाति तम् । आहूय नास्ति यो ब्रूयात्तस्य वासस्तु तत्र वै
brāhmaṇāya pratīśrutya yamārthaṁ na dadāti tam āhūya nāsti yo brūyāttasya vāsastu tatra vai
"Whoever, having given a brahmin his word, fails to give it for fear of Yama, and, when called upon, says 'I have nothing', his dwelling too is there."
Verse 14 (garuda.2.47.14)
अग्निदो गरदश्चैव कूटसाक्षी च मद्यपः । यज्ञविध्वंसकश्चैव राज्ञीगामी च पैशुनः
agnido garadaścaiva kūṭasākṣī ca madyapaḥ yajñavidhvaṁsakaścaiva rājñīgāmī ca paiśunaḥ
"The arsonist, the poisoner, the false witness, the drunkard, the destroyer of a sacrifice, one who consorts with a queen, the slanderer,"
Verse 15 (garuda.2.47.15)
कथाभङ्गकरश्चैव स्वयन्दत्ता पहारकः । क्षेत्रसेतुविभेदी च परदारप्रधर्षकः
kathābhaṅgakaraścaiva svayandattā pahārakaḥ kṣetrasetuvibhedī ca paradārapradharṣakaḥ
"one who breaks a settled agreement, one who takes back what was already given, one who breaches a field's boundary or a dam, and the violator of another's wife,"
Verse 16 (garuda.2.47.16)
ब्राह्मणो रसविक्रेता तथा यो वृषलीपतिः । गोधनस्य तृषार्तस्य वाप्या भेदं करोति यः
brāhmaṇo rasavikretā tathā yo vṛṣalīpatiḥ godhanasya tṛṣārtasya vāpyā bhedaṁ karoti yaḥ
"a brahmin who sells intoxicants, and the husband of a low-born woman; whoever breaches a well built for thirsty cattle,"
Verse 17 (garuda.2.47.17)
कन्याविदूषकश्चैव दानं दत्त्वानुतापकः । शूबद्रस्तु कपिलापायी ब्राह्मणो मांसभोजनः
kanyāvidūṣakaścaiva dānaṁ dattvānutāpakaḥ śūbadrastu kapilāpāyī brāhmaṇo māṁsabhojanaḥ
"the defiler of a maiden, one who gives a gift and then regrets it; a shudra who drinks the milk of a tawny cow, and a brahmin who eats meat —"
Verse 18 (garuda.2.47.18)
एते वसन्ति सततं मा विचारं कृथाः क्वचित् । कृपणो नास्तिकः क्षुद्रः स तस्यां निवसेत्खग
ete vasanti satataṁ mā vicāraṁ kṛthāḥ kvacit kṛpaṇo nāstikaḥ kṣudraḥ sa tasyāṁ nivasetkhaga
"all of these dwell there continually — have no doubt of it whatsoever. The miser, the atheist, and the base man too, O bird, dwell in that same river."
Verse 19 (garuda.2.47.19)
सदामर्षो सदा क्रोधी निजवाक्यप्रमाणकृत् । परोक्त्युच्छेदको नित्यं वैतरण्या वसेच्चिरम्
sadāmarṣo sadā krodhī nijavākyapramāṇakṛt paroktyucchedako nityaṁ vaitaraṇyā vasecciram
"One ever intolerant, ever wrathful, who takes only his own word as authority, who ever cuts off another's speech, dwells long in the Vaitarani."
Verse 20 (garuda.2.47.20)
यस्त्वहङ्कारवान्पापी स्वविकत्थनकारकः । कृतघ्नो गर्भसन्तापी वैतरण्यां स मज्जति
yastvahaṅkāravānpāpī svavikatthanakārakaḥ kṛtaghno garbhasantāpī vaitaraṇyāṁ sa majjati
"Whoever is prideful, sinful, given to boasting of himself, ungrateful, and causes the affliction of a womb sinks in the Vaitarani."
Verse 21 (garuda.2.47.21)
कदापि भाग्ययोगेन तरणेच्छा भवेद्यदि । सानुकूला भवेद्येन तदाकर्णय काश्यप
kadāpi bhāgyayogena taraṇecchā bhavedyadi sānukūlā bhavedyena tadākarṇaya kāśyapa
"O Kashyapa, if ever, through the fortune of good deeds, the wish to cross should arise, hear now by what means it may become favorable."
Verse 22 (garuda.2.47.22)
अयने विषुवे पुण्ये व्यतीपाते दिनोदये । चन्द्रसूर्योपरागे वा संक्रान्तौ दर्शवासरे
ayane viṣuve puṇye vyatīpāte dinodaye candrasūryoparāge vā saṁkrāntau darśavāsare
"At a solstice, an equinox, a holy day, the Vyatipata, at sunrise, at a lunar or solar eclipse, at a solar transit, or on the new-moon day,"
Verse 23 (garuda.2.47.23)
अन्येषु पुण्यकालेषु दीयते दानमुत्तमम् । यदा तदा भवेद्वापि श्राद्धा दानं प्रति ध्रुवम्
anyeṣu puṇyakāleṣu dīyate dānamuttamam yadā tadā bhavedvāpi śrāddhā dānaṁ prati dhruvam
"and on other holy occasions, an excellent gift should be given. Whenever this is done, it is certainly fruitful in relation to the shraddha-gift."
Verse 24 (garuda.2.47.24)
तदैब दानकालः स्याद्यतः सम्पत्तिरस्थिरा । अनित्यानि शरीराणि विभवो नैव शाश्वतः
tadaiba dānakālaḥ syādyataḥ sampattirasthirā anityāni śarīrāṇi vibhavo naiva śāśvataḥ
"That indeed is the true time for giving, for prosperity is unstable; bodies are impermanent, and wealth is never eternal."
Verse 25 (garuda.2.47.25)
नित्यं सन्निहितो मृत्युः कर्तव्यो धर्मसंगहः । कृष्णां वा पाटलां वापि कुर्याद्वैतरणीं शुभाम्
nityaṁ sannihito mṛtyuḥ kartavyo dharmasaṁgahaḥ kṛṣṇāṁ vā pāṭalāṁ vāpi kuryādvaitaraṇīṁ śubhām
"Death is ever near; therefore one should gather up dharma. An auspicious Vaitarani cow, black or reddish-brown, should be prepared,"
Verse 26 (garuda.2.47.26)
स्वर्णशृङ्गीं रौप्यखुरां कांस्यपात्रोपदोहनीम् । कृष्णवस्त्रयुगाच्छन्नां सप्तधान्यसमन्विताम्
svarṇaśṛṅgīṁ raupyakhurāṁ kāṁsyapātropadohanīm kṛṣṇavastrayugācchannāṁ saptadhānyasamanvitām
"with golden horns, silver hooves, milked into a bronze vessel; covered with a pair of black garments, furnished with the seven grains,"
Verse 27 (garuda.2.47.27)
कार्पासद्रोणशिखरे आसीनं ताम्रभाजने । यमं हैमं प्रकुर्वीत लोहदण्डसमन्वितम् । इक्षुदण्डमयं बद्ध्वा प्लवं सुदृढबन्धनैः
kārpāsadroṇaśikhare āsīnaṁ tāmrabhājane yamaṁ haimaṁ prakurvīta lohadaṇḍasamanvitam ikṣudaṇḍamayaṁ baddhvā plavaṁ sudṛḍhabandhanaiḥ
"seated upon a heap of cotton in a copper vessel; a golden Yama should be fashioned with an iron staff; having bound a raft made of sugarcane stalks with very firm bindings,"
Verse 28 (garuda.2.47.28)
उडुपोपरि तां धेनुं सूर्यदेहसमुद्भवाम् । कृत्वा प्रकल्पयेद्विप्रश्छत्रोपानहसंयुतम्
uḍupopari tāṁ dhenuṁ sūryadehasamudbhavām kṛtvā prakalpayedvipraśchatropānahasaṁyutam
"that cow, born of the sun's own body, should be placed upon that raft, and it should be prepared for the brahmin together with an umbrella and sandals,"
Verse 29 (garuda.2.47.29)
अङ्गुलीयकवासांसि ब्राह्मणाय निवेदयेत् । इममुच्चारयेन्मन्त्रं संगृह्य सजलान्कुशान्
aṅgulīyakavāsāṁsi brāhmaṇāya nivedayet imamuccārayenmantraṁ saṁgṛhya sajalānkuśān
"a ring and garments, and presented to the brahmin. Taking up water-soaked darbha grass, this mantra should be spoken:"
Verse 30 (garuda.2.47.30)
यमद्वारे महाघोरे श्रुत्वा वैतरणीं तदीम् । तर्तुकामो ददाम्येनां तुभ्यं वैतरणीं नमः
yamadvāre mahāghore śrutvā vaitaraṇīṁ tadīm tartukāmo dadāmyenāṁ tubhyaṁ vaitaraṇīṁ namaḥ
"'Having heard of that Vaitarani at Yama's most terrible gate, desiring to cross it, I give this to you — Vaitarani, homage to you.'"
Verse 31 (garuda.2.47.31)
गावो मे अग्रतः सन्तु गावो मे सन्तु पार्श्वतः । गावो मे हृदये सन्तु गवां मध्ये वसाम्यहम्
gāvo me agrataḥ santu gāvo me santu pārśvataḥ gāvo me hṛdaye santu gavāṁ madhye vasāmyaham
"'May cows be before me, may cows be at my side, may cows be in my heart — I dwell in the midst of cows.'"
Verse 32 (garuda.2.47.32)
विष्णुरूप द्विजश्रेष्ठ मामुद्धर महीसुर । सदक्षिणा मया दत्ता तुभ्यं वैतरणीनमः
viṣṇurūpa dvijaśreṣṭha māmuddhara mahīsura sadakṣiṇā mayā dattā tubhyaṁ vaitaraṇīnamaḥ
"'O foremost of the twice-born, form of Vishnu, O god upon earth, deliver me; together with a fee I have given this to you — Vaitarani, homage to you.'"
Verse 33 (garuda.2.47.33)
धर्मराजञ्च सर्वेशं वैतरण्याख्यधेनुकाम् । सर्वं प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य ब्राह्मणाय निवेदयेत्
dharmarājañca sarveśaṁ vaitaraṇyākhyadhenukām sarvaṁ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya brāhmaṇāya nivedayet
"Having circumambulated all of it — the King of Dharma, the Lord of all, and the cow named Vaitarani — it should be presented to the brahmin."
Verse 34 (garuda.2.47.34)
पुच्छं संगृह्य धेन्वाश्च अग्रे कृत्वा तु वै व्दिजम् । धेनुके त्वं प्रतीक्षस्व यमद्वारे महाभये
pucchaṁ saṁgṛhya dhenvāśca agre kṛtvā tu vai vdijam dhenuke tvaṁ pratīkṣasva yamadvāre mahābhaye
"Taking hold of the cow's tail, placing the brahmin ahead, one should say: 'O cow, wait for me at the most terrible gate of Yama.'"
Verse 35 (garuda.2.47.35)
उत्तारणाय देवेशि वैतरण्ये नमोऽस्तु ते । अनुव्रजेत्तु गच्छन्तं सर्वं तस्य गृहं नयेत्
uttāraṇāya deveśi vaitaraṇye namo'stu te anuvrajettu gacchantaṁ sarvaṁ tasya gṛhaṁ nayet
"'O goddess Vaitarani, homage to you for carrying me across.' One should follow behind the departing brahmin and deliver everything to his house."
Verse 36 (garuda.2.47.36)
एवं कृते वैनतेय सा सरित्सुतरा भवेत् । सर्वान्कामानवाप्नोति यो दद्याद्भुवि मानवः
evaṁ kṛte vainateya sā saritsutarā bhavet sarvānkāmānavāpnoti yo dadyādbhuvi mānavaḥ
"O son of Vinata, done in this way, that river becomes easy to cross; whoever gives this gift upon the earth obtains every desire."
Verse 37 (garuda.2.47.37)
सुकृतस्य प्रभावेण सुखञ्चेह परत्र च । स्वस्थे सहस्रगुणितमातुरे शतसंमितम्
sukṛtasya prabhāveṇa sukhañceha paratra ca svasthe sahasraguṇitamāture śatasaṁmitam
"By the power of good deeds, happiness comes both here and in the world beyond; a gift given while in health is a thousandfold, and one given during illness a hundredfold."
Verse 38 (garuda.2.47.38)
मृतस्यैव तु यद्दानं परोक्षे तत्समं स्मृतम् । स्वहस्तेन ततो देयं मृते कः कस्य दास्यती
mṛtasyaiva tu yaddānaṁ parokṣe tatsamaṁ smṛtam svahastena tato deyaṁ mṛte kaḥ kasya dāsyatī
"But whatever gift is given indirectly on behalf of one already dead is reckoned as equal to that; therefore it should be given with one's own hand — once dead, who will give to whom?"
Verse 39 (garuda.2.47.39)
दानधर्मविहीनानां कृपणैर्जीवेतक्षितैः । अस्थिरेण शरीरेण स्थिरं कर्म समाचरेत्
dānadharmavihīnānāṁ kṛpaṇairjīvetakṣitaiḥ asthireṇa śarīreṇa sthiraṁ karma samācaret
"Misers devoid of the duty of giving live in vain upon the earth; with this impermanent body one should perform deeds that endure."
Verse 40 (garuda.2.47.40)
अवश्यमेव यास्यन्ति प्राणाः प्राघुणि (घूर्णि) का इव
avaśyameva yāsyanti prāṇāḥ prāghuṇi (ghūrṇi) kā iva
"The life-breaths will surely depart, like guests who stay a while and then move on."
Verse 41 (garuda.2.47.41)
इतीदमुक्तं तव पक्षिराज विडम्बनं जन्तुगणस्य सर्वम् । प्रेतस्य मोक्षाय तदौद्ध्वन्दैहिकं हिताय लोकस्य चरेच्छुभाय तु
itīdamuktaṁ tava pakṣirāja viḍambanaṁ jantugaṇasya sarvam pretasya mokṣāya tadauddhvandaihikaṁ hitāya lokasya carecchubhāya tu
"O king of birds, all this has been told to you — this whole web of delusion binding every host of creatures. For the liberation of the preta, and for the welfare and good of the world, the after-death rite should be performed."
Verse 42 (garuda.2.47.42)
सूत उवाच । एवं विप्राः समाद्दिष्टो विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना । गरुड प्रेतचरितं श्रुत्वा सन्तुष्टिमागतः
sūta uvāca evaṁ viprāḥ samāddiṣṭo viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā garuḍa pretacaritaṁ śrutvā santuṣṭimāgataḥ
Suta said: "Thus instructed by the powerful Vishnu, Garuda, having heard the story of the preta, became content."
Verse 43 (garuda.2.47.43)
व्रततीर्थादिकं सर्वं पुनः पप्रच्छ केशवम् । ध्यात्वा मनसि सर्वेशं सर्वकारणकारणम्
vratatīrthādikaṁ sarvaṁ punaḥ papraccha keśavam dhyātvā manasi sarveśaṁ sarvakāraṇakāraṇam
"He again asked Keshava about vows, pilgrimages, and every such matter, meditating in his mind on the Lord of all, the cause of all causes."
Verse 44 (garuda.2.47.44)
ऋषयः सर्वमेवैतज्जन्तूनां प्रभवादिकम् । मरणं जन्म च तथा प्रेतत्वञ्चौर्ध्वदैहिकम्
ṛṣayaḥ sarvamevaitajjantūnāṁ prabhavādikam maraṇaṁ janma ca tathā pretatvañcaurdhvadaihikam
The sages said: "All this — the origin of creatures and all the rest, death and birth, and pretahood and the after-death rites —"
Verse 45 (garuda.2.47.45)
मया प्रोक्तं वै मुक्त्यै निदानं चैव सर्वशः । लाभस्तेषां जयस्तेषां कुतस्तेषां पराजयः । येषामिन्दीवरश्यामो हृदयस्थो जनार्दनः
mayā proktaṁ vai muktyai nidānaṁ caiva sarvaśaḥ lābhasteṣāṁ jayasteṣāṁ kutasteṣāṁ parājayaḥ yeṣāmindīvaraśyāmo hṛdayastho janārdanaḥ
"has been told by me for the sake of liberation, and in every way as the true remedy. What gain or victory is left to seek, and from where could defeat ever come, for those in whose heart dwells Janardana, dark as a blue lotus?"
Verse 46 (garuda.2.47.46)
धर्मो जयति नाधर्मः सत्यं जयति नानृतम् । क्षमा जयति न क्रोधो विष्णुर्जयति नासुराः
dharmo jayati nādharmaḥ satyaṁ jayati nānṛtam kṣamā jayati na krodho viṣṇurjayati nāsurāḥ
"Dharma prevails, not adharma; truth prevails, not falsehood; forgiveness prevails, not anger; Vishnu prevails, not the demons."
Verse 47 (garuda.2.47.47)
विष्णुर्माता पिता विष्णुर्विष्णुः स्वजनबान्धवाः । येषामेव स्थिरा बुद्धिर्न तेषां दुर्गतिर्भवेत्
viṣṇurmātā pitā viṣṇurviṣṇuḥ svajanabāndhavāḥ yeṣāmeva sthirā buddhirna teṣāṁ durgatirbhavet
"Vishnu is mother, Vishnu is father, Vishnu is one's own kin and family; those whose understanding is fixed on him alone never come to misfortune."
Verse 48 (garuda.2.47.48)
मङ्गलं भगवान्विष्णुर्मङ्गलं गरुडध्वजः । मङ्गलं पुण्डरीकाक्षो मङ्गलायतनं हरिः
maṅgalaṁ bhagavānviṣṇurmaṅgalaṁ garuḍadhvajaḥ maṅgalaṁ puṇḍarīkākṣo maṅgalāyatanaṁ hariḥ
"The Lord Vishnu is auspicious, he whose banner bears Garuda is auspicious; the lotus-eyed one is auspicious, Hari is the very abode of auspiciousness."
Verse 49 (garuda.2.47.49)
हरिर्भागीरथी विप्रा विप्रा भागीरथी हरिः । भागीरथी हरिर्विप्राः सारमेतज्जगत्त्रये
harirbhāgīrathī viprā viprā bhāgīrathī hariḥ bhāgīrathī harirviprāḥ sārametajjagattraye
"Hari is the Bhagirathi, brahmins are the Bhagirathi; the Bhagirathi is Hari, and brahmins — this alone is the essence of all three worlds."
Verse 50 (garuda.2.47.50)
इति सूतमुखोद्गीर्णां सर्वशास्त्रार्थमण्डिताम् । वैष्णविं वाक्सुधां पीत्वा ऋषयस्तुष्टिमाययुः
iti sūtamukhodgīrṇāṁ sarvaśāstrārthamaṇḍitām vaiṣṇaviṁ vāksudhāṁ pītvā ṛṣayastuṣṭimāyayuḥ
"Thus, having drunk this nectar of Vaishnava speech, adorned with the meaning of every scripture, poured forth from the mouth of Suta, the sages attained deep contentment."
Verse 51 (garuda.2.47.51)
प्रशशंसुस्तथान्योन्यं सूतं सर्वार्थदर्शिनम् । प्रहर्षमतुलं प्रापुर्मुनयः शौनकादयः
praśaśaṁsustathānyonyaṁ sūtaṁ sarvārthadarśinam praharṣamatulaṁ prāpurmunayaḥ śaunakādayaḥ
"They praised one another, and Suta too, the seer of every truth; the sages, Shaunaka and the rest, attained matchless joy."
Verse 52 (garuda.2.47.52)
अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सर्वावस्थां गतोपि वा । यः स्मरेत्पुण्डरीकाक्षं स बाह्याभ्यन्तरं शुचिः
apavitraḥ pavitro vā sarvāvasthāṁ gatopi vā yaḥ smaretpuṇḍarīkākṣaṁ sa bāhyābhyantaraṁ śuciḥ
"Whether impure or pure, or in whatever state one may find oneself, whoever remembers the lotus-eyed one becomes pure, both outwardly and within."
