Santapaka and the Five Pretas
Verse 1 (garuda.2.7.1)
garuḍa uvāca | śrutaṁ me mahādākhyānaṁ vṛṣotsargaphalaṁ hare | punaranyāṁ kathāṁ brūhi yatra te mahimādbhutaḥ
Garuda said: O Hari, I have heard this great account of the fruit of vrishotsarga. Now tell me another tale, one in which your wondrous glory shines forth.
Verse 2 (garuda.2.7.2)
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca | ahaṁ te kathayāmyadya saṁvādaṁ paramādbhutam | santaptakasya ca pretaistadrūpajñāpanāya vai
Shri Krishna said: Today I shall tell you of a most wondrous dialogue — the conversation of a brahmin named Santapaka with certain pretas, held so that their true nature might be made known.
Verse 3 (garuda.2.7.3)
vipraḥ santaptakaḥ kaścittapasādagdhakilbiṣaḥ | saṁsārāsāratāṁ jñātvāraṇyaṣveva cacāra ha
There was a brahmin named Santapaka, who had burned away his sins through austerity. Knowing the world to be hollow, he wandered only in the forests,
Verse 4 (garuda.2.7.4)
vaikhānasamunivrātaiḥ prāṇipātakṛtekṣaṇaḥ | sa kadācittīrthayātrāmuddiśya smāṭatidvijaḥ
among the companies of Vaikhanasa sages, his gaze full of compassion for every creature. Once that twice-born was wandering with the intent of pilgrimage,
Verse 5 (garuda.2.7.5)
pratyākṛṣṭendriyatvācca bahirvṛttinirodhakaḥ | saṁskāramātragamano mārgabhraṣṭo babhūva ha
his senses drawn inward, his outward activity checked, moving on almost from mere habit, he strayed from the path.
Verse 6 (garuda.2.7.6)
calannevaṁ snānakāle madhyāhne'thābhilāṣukaḥ | jalasyonmīlya nayane diśaḥ sarvā nyabhīlayat
Going along thus, at the midday hour for bathing, desiring water, he opened his eyes and looked about in every direction.
Verse 7 (garuda.2.7.7)
sa dadarśa tadā gulmairvorudvṛkṣaśataiścitam | tvaksāraiḥ śākhiśākhābhiḥ saṁkulaṁ gahanaṁvanam
He then beheld a vast forest, thick with hundreds of shrubs and great trees, dense with branches of tough bark.
Verse 8 (garuda.2.7.8)
tatra tālāstamālāśca priyālāḥ panasāstathā | śrīparṇo śālaśākhoṭasyandanāstindukāstathā
There stood tala, tamala, priyala, and jackfruit trees, and also shrivriksha, sal, shakhota, syandana, and tinduka trees,
Verse 9 (garuda.2.7.9)
sarjārjunāmrātakāśca śleṣmā takabhibhītakau | picumardaściñciṇī ca karkandhūkarṇikārakāḥ
sarja, arjuna, and amratak trees, shleshmataka, vibhitaka, neem, tamarind, jujube, and karnikara —
Verse 10 (garuda.2.7.10)
ete cānye ca bahavo vṛkṣāsteṣu na dṛśyate | pakṣiṇāmapi vai panthā manuṣyasya kutaḥ punaḥ
these and many other trees besides, among which not even a path for birds could be seen, let alone a path for men.
Verse 11 (garuda.2.7.11)
tasmin vane mahāghore siṁhavyāghrasamākule | tarakṣugavayairṛkṣairmahiṣaiśca niṣevite
In that most terrible forest, thronged with lions and tigers, frequented by hyenas, wild oxen, bears, and buffaloes,
Verse 12 (garuda.2.7.12)
kuñja rairurubhirnāgairmarkaṭaiśca tathāmṛgaiḥ | śvāpadaiśca tathā cānyaiḥ piśācai rākṣasairvṛte
thronged with elephants, deer, serpents, monkeys, and other wild creatures, and beset by beasts of prey, pishachas, and rakshasas,
Verse 13 (garuda.2.7.13)
santaptako dvijaḥ kiñcidbhayasantrastamānasaḥ | kāndiśīkaḥ samabhavaḍhyadbhaviṣyo yayau punaḥ
the brahmin Santapaka's mind grew somewhat terrified. Losing his sense of direction, he went on wherever he could.
Verse 14 (garuda.2.7.14)
jhaṁkāreṣu ca jhillīnāṁ ghūkānāṁ ghūtkṛteṣvapi | dattakarṇaḥ kunīlāṁgaścacāla padapañcakam
Amid the shrilling of crickets and the hooting of owls, straining his ears, his body pale with fear, he could barely advance five steps.
Verse 15 (garuda.2.7.15)
sa tatra vaṭavṛkṣāgre snāyubaddhaṁ śavaṁ tathā | dadarśa tadbhujaścaiva pañca pretān sudāruṇān
There, at the top of a banyan tree, he saw a corpse bound by its sinews, and around it he saw five most terrible pretas,
Verse 16 (garuda.2.7.16)
śirāsthicarmaśeṣāṁgān pṛṣṭhalagnodarān khaga | tyaktānnāsikayā netrakūpapātabhayādiva
their bodies reduced to skull, bone, and skin alone, their bellies clinging to their backs, O bird, their very noses shrunken back as though in fear of falling into the pits of their eyes,
Verse 17 (garuda.2.7.17)
sūcīkrakakacakavrātaghātapātitakīkasān | vasāktanavamastiṣkasvādanityamahotsavān
their ribs pried apart by needle-, tooth-, and comb-like implements, forever absorbed in the daily festival of tasting fresh, fat-smeared brain,
Verse 18 (garuda.2.7.18)
raṇatkoṭimahādaṁṣṭrānasthigranthyavaghaṭṭitān | tāndṛṣṭvā trastahṛdayo gatimākuñcya saṁsthitaḥ
their huge fangs clattering, their bony joints grinding against one another — seeing them, his heart grew terrified, and he stood frozen, unable to move.
Verse 19 (garuda.2.7.19)
te vilokyāgataṁ vipramaṭavīṁ janavarjitām | ahaṁ pūrvamahaṁ pūrvaṁ yāmītyāktvā pradudruvuḥ
They too, seeing that brahmin arrive in that people-less forest, cried 'I first, I first!' and rushed toward him.
Verse 20 (garuda.2.7.20)
teṣu dvaudvāvagṛhṇītāmasya hastāvathāpare | dvaudvau pādāvagṛhṇītāṁ mūrdhānaṁ pañcamo'grahīt
Two of them seized his two hands, another two seized his two feet, and the fifth seized his head.
Verse 21 (garuda.2.7.21)
svajātyucitavākyena sphuṭavarṇavatābruvan | ahaṁ jakṣāmyahaṁ bhakṣāmīti karṣaṇatatparāḥ
In speech fitting their kind, in clear words they cried — 'I shall eat him, I shall eat him!' — thus intent on pulling him apart,
Verse 22 (garuda.2.7.22)
sahasaiva sahaivāmuṁ gṛhītvā vyagamanviyat | kiyatsthitaṁ vaṭau māṁsaṁ kriyanneti nyabhālayan
and, suddenly, holding him fast together, they rose up into the sky. They then looked back to see how much flesh remained on the banyan tree, and what should now be done.
Verse 23 (garuda.2.7.23)
te'paśyannijadaṁṣṭrāyaḥ pāṭitāntramimaṁ śavam | avatīrya tato vyomno gṛhītvā caraṇaiḥ śavam
They saw that corpse lying there, its entrails torn open by their own sharp fangs. Then, descending from the sky, gripping the corpse with their feet,
Verse 24 (garuda.2.7.24)
svakhaṇḍitaśarīrantu punarvyomaiva cakramuḥ | sa nīyamānamātmānaṁ vilokya viyati dvijaḥ
they took flight once more into the sky, carrying their own broken portion [of food] with them. Seeing himself thus being carried through the sky, that brahmin,
Verse 25 (garuda.2.7.25)
jagāma manasā māṁ sa śaraṇaṁ bhayavihvalaḥ | namaścakre cakradharaṁ cetasā cinmayaṁ samam
overwhelmed with fear, sought refuge in me within his mind. He bowed in his heart to me — the bearer of the discus, of the nature of pure consciousness, ever the same.
Verse 26 (garuda.2.7.26)
vakraṁ nakraṁ cakrapātena dūre kṛtvā hṛtvā tasya duḥkhaṁ mukundaḥ | mātaṁgaṁ yo'mūmucannakravaktrātpāśaṁ so'sau karmaṇāṁ me lunātu
'May that Mukunda, who with the throw of his discus drove off the crocodile, and, cutting the bond of the noose from that twisted-mouthed crocodile's grip, freed the elephant-king from his suffering — may he sever the bonds of my own deeds.'
Verse 27 (garuda.2.7.27)
ruddhāñśuddhān bhūpatīnmāgadhena bhīmenainaṁ ghātayitvā murāriḥ | nirbaddhānyo bhargayajñāya muktaścakro me'sau karmapāśaṁ lunātu
'May that Murari, who freed the kings held captive by Bhima, lord of Magadha, forcibly imprisoned, releasing them for the sacrifice to Bharga (Shiva) — may that wielder of the discus cut through the noose of my own deeds.'
Verse 28 (garuda.2.7.28)
manasaivaiha māmastautstūyamāno'hamutthitaḥ | agacchaṁ sahasā tatra yatra pretaiḥ sa nīyate
Thus praising me within his mind, he rose up. I went at once to that place where he was being carried off by the pretas.
Verse 29 (garuda.2.7.29)
dṛṣṭvā tairnīyamānantu kautukaṁ me'bhavatkhaga | papraccha na kiyantaṁ vai kālaṁ tānpṛṣṭhato'nvagām
O bird, seeing him being carried by those pretas, curiosity arose in me. I did not stop to ask how long I followed behind them,
Verse 30 (garuda.2.7.30)
mama sannidhimātreṇa dvijātiṁ tañca sarpahan | tatkālaṁ śivikāsuptabhūpālasukhamāviśat
O slayer of serpents, by my mere presence alone, that twice-born instantly attained a comfort like that of a king asleep in his palanquin.
Verse 31 (garuda.2.7.31)
maṇibhadrastato meruṁ gacchandṛṣṭo mayā pathi | nikocyākṣi svapārśvaṁ sa nīto vai yakṣarāṇmayā
Then, on the way, I saw Manibhadra proceeding toward Meru. I signaled with a glance, and drew the king of the yakshas to my side.
Verse 32 (garuda.2.7.32)
tamavocaṁ mahāyakṣaṁ tvaṁ hi pratibhaṭo bhava | pretānnāśaya tadbhūyaḥ śavañca hara tadgatam
I said to that great yaksha: 'Become their adversary; destroy these pretas at once, and bring back that corpse which they have carried off.'
Verse 33 (garuda.2.7.33)
ityuktaḥ sa mahāghoraṁ kṛtvā roṣaṁ suduḥsaham | jagrāha pretarūpaṁ tatpretānāmapi duḥkhadam
Thus commanded, seizing upon a most terrible and unbearable rage, he assumed a form fearsome even to those pretas — the very form of a preta himself.
Verse 34 (garuda.2.7.34)
sa vivṛtya svakau bāhū sṛkkiṇī parilelihan | bhedayannuruvātena pretāṁstānsaṁmukho yayau
Spreading wide his two arms, licking the corners of his lips, splitting the air with tremendous force, he advanced to confront those pretas.
Verse 35 (garuda.2.7.35)
bāhubhyāṁ dvau dvau ca padbhyāṁ mūrdhnaikaṁ ca samāharat | pretānathāpi sahasā jaghāna dṛḍhamuṣṭinā
With his two arms he seized two, with his two feet two more, and with his head one; and, at once, with his powerful fists, he struck down those pretas.
Verse 36 (garuda.2.7.36)
te vivarṇamukhāḥ sarve taṁ dvijañca śavaṁ tathā | ekaikaṁ hastapādaiśca gṛhītvā yuddhamārabhan
All of them, pale with fear, seized upon that brahmin and upon the corpse, each with his hands and feet, and began the battle.
Verse 37 (garuda.2.7.37)
te nakhaistalaghātaiśca pādaghātaistathaiva ca | daṁṣṭrāghātaiśca sarve tamekaṁ pretaṁ vyadārayan
With claws, with blows of the palm, with kicks, and likewise with the strikes of their fangs, they all together set upon that one preta to tear him apart.
Verse 38 (garuda.2.7.38)
teṣāṁ prahārānviphalānkṛtvā saṁprati tānatha | jīvaṁ na tu śavaṁ teṣāṁ jahre prāṇamivāntakaḥ
Rendering their blows fruitless, he now took not the corpse but their very lives — as though he were Death itself.
Verse 39 (garuda.2.7.39)
hṛtamātre śave te tu pāriyātre girau dvijam | muktvādhāvan pramuditā ekaṁ pretaṁ sudāruṇāḥ
Once the corpse was seized, those remaining pretas, leaving the brahmin upon the mountain, rushed gladly toward that one most terrible preta.
Verse 40 (garuda.2.7.40)
That wind-swift preta [the yaksha] was upon them for but a moment, and then vanished from sight; then, in despair, they came back to the brahmin.
Verse 41 (garuda.2.7.41)
prārabdhamātre viprasya pāṭane tatra parvate | mama sthānasya viprasya mahimneva ca tatkṣaṇe
There upon that mountain, just as they began [to tear apart] the brahmin, at that very moment, through the very majesty of my abode,
Verse 42 (garuda.2.7.42)
sadyaḥ smṛtiḥ samutpannā teṣāṁ pūrvasya janmanaḥ | vipraṁ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya dvijarṣabhamathābruvan
the memory of their former birth suddenly arose within them. They circled that foremost brahmin in reverence and said to him —
Verse 43 (garuda.2.7.43)
adya naḥ kṣantumarho'sītyuktvā te suradāmbhikāḥ | gireriva parāvartaṁ samudrasyeva śoṣaṇam
'Today you should forgive us' — thus speaking, those who once had the arrogance of gods, as though the mountain had turned back, or the ocean had dried up,
Verse 44 (garuda.2.7.44)
teṣāṁ tadvacanaṁ śrutvāpṛcchatke yūyamityatha | kiṁ māyā kimu vā svapna utāho cittavibhramaḥ
hearing their words, he asked — 'Who are you? Is this an illusion, or a dream, or merely a confusion of my own mind?'
Verse 45 (garuda.2.7.45)
pretā ūcuḥ | avehi tattvamevaitatpretā vai karmajā vayam | brāhmaṇa uvāca | kiṁnāmānaḥ kimācārāḥ kathañcemāṁ daśāṁ gatāḥ
The pretas said: 'Know this to be the very truth — we are pretas born of our own deeds.' The brahmin said: 'What were your names, what was your conduct, and how did you come to this state?
Verse 46 (garuda.2.7.46)
avinītāḥ kathaṁ pūrvaṁ vinītāḥ sāmprataṁ katham | pretā ūcuḥ | śṛṇu viprendra vakṣyāmaḥ praśnānāmanupūrvaśaḥ
How were you so unruly before, and how have you now become so humble?' The pretas said: 'Hear, O foremost of brahmins, we shall answer your questions in order,
Verse 47 (garuda.2.7.47)
uttarāṇi mahāyogiṁstvaddarśanagatāṁhasaḥ | ahaṁ paryuṣito nāmnā eṣa sūcīmukhaḥ smṛtaḥ
O great yogi, by the mere sight of you our sins have been destroyed. I am known by the name 'Paryushita'; this one is called 'Suchimukha';
Verse 48 (garuda.2.7.48)
tṛtīyaḥ śīghragasturyo rodhako lekhakaḥ paraḥ | brāhmaṇa uvāca | pretānāṁ karmajātānāṁ kuto nāma nirarthakam
the third is 'Shighraga', the fourth 'Rodhaka', and the last 'Lekhaka'.' The brahmin said: 'Since you pretas were each born of your own deed, how are these names of yours not meaningless?
Verse 49 (garuda.2.7.49)
niruktimeṣāṁ nāmnāṁ vai pretā vadata mā ciram | śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca | evamuktāstu vipreṇa pṛthaguttaramabruvan
O pretas, tell me the true derivation of your names, without delay.' Shri Krishna said: Thus questioned by the brahmin, they each gave their own answer in turn.
Verse 50 (garuda.2.7.50)
paryuṣita uvāca | kadācicchrāddhakāle vai mayā vipro nimantritaḥ
Paryushita said: Once, on the occasion of a shraddha, I invited a brahmin.
Verse 51 (garuda.2.7.51)
sa ca kṛtvā vilambena vṛddho madgṛhamāgataḥ | akṛtaśrāddhakarmāhaṁ taṁ pākaṁ bhuktavān kṣudhā
That old man, arriving late, came to my house. As the shraddha rite was not yet complete, and being tormented by hunger, I myself ate that food,
Verse 52 (garuda.2.7.52)
adadāmannamākṛṣya vipre paryuṣitaṁ kiyat | tasmātpāpānmṛtaḥ pāpo yoniṁ vai kutsitāṁ gataḥ
and, dragging out the meal, gave the brahmin only some stale food. Dying from that sin, I, a sinner, attained a despised state of being.
Verse 53 (garuda.2.7.53)
yataḥ paryuṣitaṁ dattaṁ tataḥ paryuṣitaḥ smṛtaḥ | sūcīmukha uvāca | kadācidbrāhmaṇī kācittīrthaṁ bhadravaṭaṁ yayau
Because I gave stale (paryushita) food, I am known by the name 'Paryushita'.' Suchimukha said: 'Once a certain brahmin woman journeyed to the tirtha of Bhadravata.
Verse 54 (garuda.2.7.54)
pañcavarṣasutā vṛddhā putramātraikajīvitā | ahaṁ kṣattriyadāyādastasyā rodhamakāriṣam
She was aged, sustained by her life only through a five-year-old son. I was the son of a kshatriya; I obstructed her way.
Verse 55 (garuda.2.7.55)
vane tu vijane tatra pāpādhvagagatiṁ gataḥ | tasyāḥ savastraṁ pātheyaṁ tatsūnorvasanāni ca
There, in that lonely forest, having attained the state of a sinful, wayward traveler, I seized her clothing, her provisions for the journey, and her son's clothes as well,
Verse 56 (garuda.2.7.56)
gṛhītāni mayā vipra śirasyāpīḍya muṣṭinā | tṛṣārtastatkṣaṇaṁ bālaḥ pātrasaṁsthaṁ jalaṁ piban
O brahmin, striking her upon the head with my fist. Tormented by thirst, that child at once began to drink the water kept in a vessel.
Verse 57 (garuda.2.7.57)
tāvanmātrodake deśe mayā huṁkṛtya vāritaḥ | mayātha sakalaṁ pītaṁ jalaṁ pātrāttṛṣāvatā

Verse 100 (garuda.2.7.100)

Verse 102 (garuda.2.7.102)

By the power of that holy company, those pretas attained heaven, and the brahmin Santapaka, attaining the glory renowned by the name Vishvaksena, joined my own retinue. All this have I told you — whoever recites this, or whoever hears it, that person too shall never attain the state of a preta.
