The Secret of Truth, in the Dialogue Between Krishna and Garuda

Chapter 77All chapters

Verse 1 (garuda.2.78.1)

pravahānantarānvakṣye śṛṇu pakṣīndrasattama yo dharmo brahmaṇaḥ putro hyādisṛṣṭau tvagudbhavaḥ

I shall now speak of those born after Pravaha; listen, O best and foremost of birds. He who is Dharma, Brahma's son, arose from Brahma's body at the beginning of creation—

Verse 2 (garuda.2.78.2)

sajjanānsaumyarūpeṇa dhāraṇāddharmanāmakaḥ sa eva sūryaputrobhūdyamasaṁjñāmavāpa saḥ pāpināṁ śikṣakattvātsa yama ityucyate budhaiḥ

—sustaining the virtuous with a gentle form, he is named Dharma; that very one, becoming the Sun's son, obtained the name Yama; because he instructs sinners, the wise call him Yama.

Verse 3 (garuda.2.78.3)

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca prahlādānantaraṁ gaṅgā bhāryā vai varuṇasya ca prahlādādadhamā jñeyā mahimnā varuṇādhikā

Shri Krishna said: After Prahlada in rank, Ganga, the wife of Varuna, is to be known as lower than Prahlada, yet superior in glory to Varuna.

Verse 4 (garuda.2.78.4)

svarūpādadhamā jñeyā nātra kāryā vicāraṇā jñānasvarūpadaṁ viṣṇuṁ yamo jānāti sarvadā

She is to be known as lower in her own essential nature — of this there is no need for question. Yama ever knows Vishnu as the bestower of the very form of knowledge.

Verse 5 (garuda.2.78.5)

ato gaṅgeti sā jñeyā sarvadā lokapāvanī bhaktyā viṣṇupadītyeva kīrtitā nātra saṁśayaḥ

Hence she is to be known as Ganga, ever the purifier of the worlds; through devotion she is proclaimed as 'Vishnu-pada,' sprung from Vishnu's foot — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 6 (garuda.2.78.6)

yā pūrvakāle yajñaliṅgasya viṣṇoḥ sākṣāddharervikramataḥ khagendra vāmasya pādasya nakhāgrataśca nirbhidya cordhvāṇḍakaṭāhakhaṇḍam

She who, in former times, at the very stride of Hari-Vishnu in his sacrificial form, O lord of birds, burst forth from the tip of the nail of his left foot, piercing the upper shell of the cosmic egg—

Verse 7 (garuda.2.78.7)

tadudaramativegātsampraviśyāvahantīṁ jagadaghatatihantuḥ pādakiñjalkaśuddhām nikhilamalanihantrīṁ darśanātsparśanācca sakṛdavagahanādvā bhaktidāṁ viṣṇupāde śaśikaravaragaurāṁ mīnanetrāṁ supūjyāṁ smarati haripadotthāṁ mokṣameti krameṇa

—and, entering that cosmic egg's interior with great speed, flows on, purified by the pollen of the feet of him who destroys the accumulated sins of the world; the destroyer of all impurity, granting devotion at Vishnu's feet through mere sight, touch, or a single immersion, fair as moonbeam, fish-eyed, most worthy of worship — whoever remembers her as having arisen from Hari's own foot attains liberation in due course.

Verse 8 (garuda.2.78.8)

indropi vāyukaramarditavāyukūṭabinduṁ ca prāśya śirasi hyasahiṣṇumānaḥ bhāgīrathī haripadāṅkamiti sma nityaṁ jānanmahāparamabhāgavatapradhānaḥ bhaktyā ca khinnahṛdayaḥ paramādareṇa dhṛtvā svamūrdhni paramo hyaśivaḥ śivo'bhūt

Even Indra, having drunk a drop of the wind-churned mountain-essence, unable to bear it upon his head, yet, as the foremost of great Bhagavatas, ever knowing the Bhagirathi as marked by Hari's very foot, with a heart moved by devotion, bore her upon his own head with the utmost reverence — and thereby he, utterly inauspicious in his suffering, became auspicious.

Verse 9 (garuda.2.78.9)

bhāgīrathyāśca catvāri rūpāṇyāsankhageśvara mahābhiṣagjanendrasya bhāryā tu hyabhiṣecanī

O lord of birds, the Bhagirathi had four forms: as Abhishechani, wife of the great physician, lord of men—

Verse 10 (garuda.2.78.10)

dvitīyenaiva rūpeṇa gaṅgā bhāryā ca śantanoḥ suṣeṇā vai suṣeṇasya bhāryā sā vānarī smṛtā

—in her second form, Ganga was the wife of Shantanu; as Sushena, she is remembered as the monkey-wife of Sushena—

Verse 11 (garuda.2.78.11)

maṇḍūkabhāryā gaṅgā tu saiva maṇḍūkinī smṛtā evaṁ catvāri rūpāṇi gaṅgāyā iti kīrtitam

—and as the wife of Manduka, that same Ganga is remembered as Mandukini. Thus the four forms of Ganga are proclaimed.

Verse 12 (garuda.2.78.12)

ādityāccaiva gaṅgātaḥ parjanyaḥ samudāhṛtaḥ pravarṣati suvairāgyaṁ hyataḥ parjanyanāmakam

From Aditya and Ganga, Parjanya is declared to have arisen; since he rains down true dispassion, he bears the name Parjanya.

Verse 13 (garuda.2.78.13)

śaraṁvarāya pañcajanyācca pañca hitvā jagdhvā garvakaṁ ṣaṭkrameṇa svabāṇasya svahṛdi saṁsthitasya bhajetsadā naiva bhaktiṁ viṣaṁ ca

Having set aside the five senses for the sake of the true arrow, and having, in six stages, consumed pride born of the conch Panchajanya — one should ever worship the Lord whose own arrow is fixed within one's own heart, never mixing devotion with poison.

Verse 14 (garuda.2.78.14)

liṅgaṁ puṣṭaṁ naiva kāryaṁ sadaiva liṅgaṁ puṣṭaṁ kāryamevaṁ sadāpi yonau saktirnaiva kāryā sadāpi yonau mukte'saṁgato yāti muktim

One should never nourish the merely physical organ, yet one should ever nourish the true, symbolic linga in this manner. One should never form attachment to the womb of sense-pleasure; freed from it, unattached, one goes to liberation.

Verse 15 (garuda.2.78.15)

vairāgyamevaṁ prakārotyeva nityamataḥ parjanyastvantakaḥ pakṣivarya etāvatā śarabhākhyo mahātmā sa cāntaro sa tu parjanya eva

Thus Parjanya ever brings about dispassion in this manner; hence Parjanya is also the ender of time, O best of birds. To this same extent, the great soul named Sharabha, the inner one, is indeed Parjanya himself.

Verse 16 (garuda.2.78.16)

śaśvatkeśā yasya gātre khagendra prabhāsyante śarabhākhyo payotaḥ yamasya bhāryā śyāmalā yā khagendra yasmātsadā kalibhāryāpiyā ca

He whose body, O lord of birds, is ever adorned with radiant hair, is named Sharabha, arising from the cosmic waters. Yama's wife, named Shyamala, O lord of birds, is she who is also ever the wife of Kali.

Verse 17 (garuda.2.78.17)

matvā samyakmānasaṁ yā karoti hyataśca sā śyāmalāsaṁjñakābhūt malaṁ vakṣye haribhaktervirodhī sulohapātre sannidhānaṁ ca tasya

—properly reflecting in her mind, she thus became named Shyamala. I shall now describe the impurity that opposes devotion to Hari, and its presence, as in a fine metal vessel—

Verse 18 (garuda.2.78.18)

tadvaiṣṇavaistyājyamevaṁ sadaiva vastraṁ dagdhaṁ sandhijaṁ caiva janyam

—this, Vaishnavas should always avoid: a burnt garment, and garments joined at the seams, worn without purification.

Verse 19 (garuda.2.78.19)

cikitsitaṁ paraduḥkhaṁ khagendra harerbhaktaistyājyamevaṁ sadaiva

Practicing medicine on another's suffering for improper motive, O lord of birds, is likewise always to be avoided by Hari's devotees.

Verse 20 (garuda.2.78.20)

noccāśca te haribhaktervihīnāsteṣāṁ saṁgo naiva kāryaḥ sadāpi purāṇasaṁparkavisarjinaṁ ca purāṇatālaṁ ca purāṇavastram

Those devoid of devotion to Hari should never be associated with, however exalted; likewise avoid that which renounces contact with the Puranas, an old, cracked palm-leaf, and an old worn-out garment—

Verse 21 (garuda.2.78.21)

sujīrṇakanthājinamekhalaṁ ca yajñopavītaṁ ca kalipriyaṁ ca priyaṁ gṛhaṁ corṇavitānakaṁ ca samitkuśaiḥ pūritaṁ kutsitaṁ ca

—a worn-out patched cloak, deerskin, and girdle, and a sacred thread dear to Kali; a house dear merely for its comfort, a woolen canopy, and one filled disdainfully with mere sacrificial twigs and kusha grass.

Verse 22 (garuda.2.78.22)

sarvaṁ cetkalibhāryāpriyaṁ ca naiva priyaṁ śārṅgapāṇeḥ kadācit kāṁsye supakvaṁ yāvanālasya cānnaṁ tuṣaḥ piṇyākaṁ tumbabilve palāṇḍuḥ

All this, dear to Kali's wife, is never at all dear to the Bow-Bearer. Food well-cooked in bronze, of millet, husk, oil-cake, in a gourd or bel-fruit vessel, and onion—

Verse 23 (garuda.2.78.23)

dīrghaṁ takraṁ svāduhīnaṁ kaṭūṣṇamete sarve kalibhāryāpriyāśca sudurmukhaṁ nindanaṁ cāryajānāṁ satovamatyātmajānāṁ prasahya

—stale, flavorless, pungent, hot buttermilk — all these are dear to Kali's wife; likewise foul-mouthed reviling of noble persons, and forcibly heaping insults upon one's own children—

Verse 24 (garuda.2.78.24)

supīḍanaṁ sarvadā bhartṛvarge gṛhasthitavrīhivastrādicauryāt prakīrṇabhūtānmūrdhajānsaṁdadhānaṁ karairyutaṁ devakalipriyaṁ ca

—constant oppression of one's own household through theft of the rice, garments, and the like stored at home; wearing disheveled hair, and being burdened with debts — all these are dear to the god Kali.

Verse 25 (garuda.2.78.25)

ityādi sarvaṁ kalibhāryāpriyañca sunirmalaṁ prakarotyeva sarvam ataśca sā śyāmaleti svasaṁjñāmavāpa sā devakī saṁbabhūva

All this is dear to Kali's wife; the very opposite, entirely pure conduct, is what she herself practiced. Hence she obtained the name Shyamala, and she then became Devaki.

Verse 26 (garuda.2.78.26)

yudhiṣṭhirasyaiva babhūva patnīsaṁbhāvitā tatra ca devakī sā candrasya bhāryā rohiṇī vai tadeyamaśvinyādibhyo'hyadhikā sarvadaiva

That Devaki became the honored wife of Yudhishthira himself in that role. The wife of the Moon, Rohini, is ever superior to Ashvini and the other lunar mansions—

Verse 27 (garuda.2.78.27)

roṇīṁ dhṛtvā rohati yogyasthānaṁ tasmācca sā rohiṇīti prasiddhā ādityabhāryā nāma saṁjñā khagendra jñeyā sā nārāyaṇasya svarūpā

—holding the essence called roni, she rises to her fitting station; hence she is renowned as Rohini. The Sun's wife, named Samjna, O lord of birds, is to be known as herself a form belonging to Narayana—

Verse 28 (garuda.2.78.28)

saṁjānātītyeva saṁjñāmavāpa saṁjñeti loke sūrya bhāryā khagendra brahmāṇḍasya hyabhimānī tu devo virāḍiti hyabhidhāmāpa tena

—since she 'perceives fully,' she obtained the name Samjna; thus, in the world, the Sun's wife is called Samjna, O lord of birds. The deity presiding over the cosmic egg obtained thereby the name Virat.

Verse 29 (garuda.2.78.29)

gaṅgādiṣaṭkaṁ samameva nityaṁ parasparaṁ nottamaṁ nādhamaṁ ca pradhānāgneḥ pāvikānyaiva gaṅgā sadā śubhā nātra vicāryamasti

This group of six, beginning with Ganga, is ever mutually equal, neither superior nor inferior among themselves. Ganga is ever auspicious, purifying even in relation to the primal fire — of this there is no need for question.

Verse 30 (garuda.2.78.30)

āsāṁ jñānatpuṇyamāpnoti nityaṁ sadā hariḥ prīyate keśavolam gaṅgādibhyo hyavarāhyagnijāyā svāhāsaṁjñādhiguṇā naiva hīnā

By knowing them, one ever attains merit, and Keshava-Hari is ever abundantly pleased. Below Ganga and the others is Agni's wife, named Svaha, herself not deficient in quality—

Verse 31 (garuda.2.78.31)

svāhākāro mantrarūpābhimānī svāheti saṁjñāmāpa sadaiva vīndra agnerbhāryāto buddhimān saṁbabhūva brahmābhimānī candraputro budhaśca

—presiding over the mantric utterance 'Svaha,' she ever bears that very name, O best of kings. From Agni's wife, the wise Budha, presiding over intellect, the Moon's son, came into being—

Verse 32 (garuda.2.78.32)

buddhyāharadvai rāṣṭrajātaṁ ca sarvaṁ dhṛtaṁ tvato budhasaṁjñāmavāpa evaṁ cābhūdabhimanyurmahātmā subhadrāyā jaṭhare hyarjunācca

—since he grasped, through intellect, all that pertains to a kingdom, he obtained the name Budha. Thus too came into being the great soul Abhimanyu, in Subhadra's womb, from Arjuna—

Verse 33 (garuda.2.78.33)

kṛṣṇasya candrasya yamasya cāṁśaiḥ sa saṁyutastvaśvinorvai harasya svāhādhamaścandraputro budhastu pādāravinde viṣṇudevasya bhaktaḥ

—endowed with portions of Krishna, the Moon, Yama, and the Ashvins, and of Hara. Budha, the Moon's son, lower than Svaha, is a devotee at the lotus feet of the god Vishnu.

Verse 34 (garuda.2.78.34)

nāmātmikā tvaśvibhāryā uṣā nāma prakīrtitā budhādhamā sā vijñeyā svāhā daśaguṇādhamā

The wife of the Ashvins, herself named after 'Nama,' is proclaimed as Usha; she is to be known as lower than Budha, and ten degrees lower than Svaha.

Verse 35 (garuda.2.78.35)

nakulasya bhāryā māgadhasyaiva putrī śalyātmajā sahadevasya bhāryā ubhe hyete aśvibhāryā hyuṣāpi upāsate ṣaḍguṇaṁ viṣṇumādyam ato'pyuṣāsaṁjñakā sā khagendra anantarāñchṛṇu vakṣye mahātman

Nakula's wife, the daughter of the Magadha king, and Shalya's daughter, Sahadeva's wife — both these, together with Usha, the Ashvins' wife, worship the primal Vishnu with a sixfold quality. Hence she too bears the name Usha, O lord of birds; hear now, O great soul, of those born after her.

Verse 36 (garuda.2.78.36)

tataḥ śaktiḥ pṛthivyātmā śanaiścarati sarvadā ataḥ śanaiścaro nāma uṣāyāśca daśādhamāḥ

Then there is Shakti, of earthy nature, who ever moves slowly; hence he is named Shanaishchara, and is ten degrees lower than Usha.

Verse 37 (garuda.2.78.37)

karmātmā puṣkaro jñeyaḥ śaneratha yamo mataḥ nayābhimānī puruṣaḥ kiñcinnamro daśāvaraḥ

Pushkara, of karmic nature, is to be known as regarded as Yama relative to Shani; presiding over right conduct, he is a person somewhat humble, ten degrees lower.

Verse 38 (garuda.2.78.38)

hariprītikaro nityaṁ puṣkare krīḍate yataḥ atastu puṣkalo nāma loke sa parikīrtitaḥ

Since he ever sports in the pool, bringing pleasure to Hari, he is thus proclaimed in the world by the name Pushkala.

Verse 39 (garuda.2.78.39)

hari prītikarāndharmānvakṣye śṛṇu khagādhipa prātaḥ kāle samutthāya smarennārāyaṇaṁ harim

I shall now describe the observances that please Hari; listen, O lord of birds. Rising in the morning, one should remember Hari Narayana—

Verse 40 (garuda.2.78.40)

tulasīvandanaṁ kuryācchrīviṣṇuṁ saṁsmaretkhaga viṇmūtrotsargakāle ca hyapānātmakakeśavam

—one should venerate the tulasi plant and remember Shri Vishnu, O bird; at the time of evacuating urine and excrement, one should remember Keshava in his form as the apana breath.

Verse 41 (garuda.2.78.41)

trivikramaṁ śaucakāle gaṅgāpānakaraṁ harim dantadhāvanakāle tu candrāntaryāmiṇaṁ harim

At the time of purification, Trivikrama, Hari who drinks in the Ganga; at the time of brushing the teeth, Hari indwelling within the moon.

Verse 42 (garuda.2.78.42)

mukhaprakṣālane kāle mādhavaṁ saṁsmaretkhaga gavāṁ kaṇḍūyane caiva smaredgovardhanaṁ harim

At the time of washing the face, one should remember Madhava, O bird; and at the time of scratching cows, one should remember Hari Govardhana.

Verse 43 (garuda.2.78.43)

sadā godohane kāle smaredgopālavallabham anantapuṇyārjitajanmakarmaṇāṁ supakvakāle ca khagendrasattama

Ever at the time of milking cows, one should remember Gopala, beloved of the cowherds; at the ripe fruition of one's births and deeds, accumulated by endless merit—

Verse 44 (garuda.2.78.44)

sparśe gavāṁ caiva sadā nṛṇāṁ vai bhavatyato nātra vicāryamasti yasmin gṛhe nāsti sadottamā ca gauryaṅgaṇe śrītulasī ca nāsti

—that comes through the touch of cows for humans; of this there is no need for question. In whatever house there is no ever-excellent cow, and no sacred tulasi in the courtyard—

Verse 45 (garuda.2.78.45)

yasmin gṛhe devamahotsavaśca yasmin gṛhe śravaṇaṁ nāsti viṣṇoḥ tatsaṁsargādyāti duḥkhādikaṁ ca tasya sparśo naiva kāryaḥ kadāpi

—in whatever house there is no festival of the deity, and no hearing of Vishnu — from association with such a house, misery and the like result; one should never even touch such a place.

Verse 46 (garuda.2.78.46)

gosparśanavihīnasya godohanamajānataḥ gopoṣaṇavihīnasya prāhurjanma nirarthakam

For one devoid of the touching of cows, ignorant of milking, devoid of the nurturing of cows — his birth, they declare, is meaningless.

Verse 47 (garuda.2.78.47)

gogrāsamapradātuśca gopuṣṭiṁ cāpyakurvataḥ gatirnāstyeva nāstyeva grāmacāṇḍālavatsmṛtaḥ

For one who gives no morsel to the cow and does not tend to her nourishment, there is truly no good destiny; he is remembered as an outcast of the village.

Verse 48 (garuda.2.78.48)
