The Order of the Lineage
Verse 1 (markandeya.108.1)
एवंप्रभावो भगवाननादिनिधनो रविः । यस्य त्वं क्रौष्टुके भक्त्या माहात्म्यं परिपृच्छसि ॥ 108.1 ॥
evaṁprabhāvo bhagavānanādinidhano raviḥ yasya tvaṁ krauṣṭuke bhaktyā māhātmyaṁ paripṛcchasi
Such indeed is the power of the blessed Sun, without beginning or end, whose greatness you, O Kraushtuki, devotedly ask about.
Verse 2 (markandeya.108.2)
परमात्मा स योगिनां युञ्जतां चेतसां लयम् । क्षेत्रज्ञः सांख्ययोगानां यज्ञेशो यज्विनामपि ॥ 108.2 ॥
paramātmā sa yogināṁ yuñjatāṁ cetasāṁ layam kṣetrajñaḥ sāṁkhyayogānāṁ yajñeśo yajvināmapi
He is the Supreme Self for the yogis who bring their minds to absorption, the Knower-of-the-Field for practitioners of Sankhya and Yoga, and the Lord of Sacrifice for those who perform sacrifices as well.
Verse 3 (markandeya.108.3)
सूर्याधिकारं वहतो विष्णोरीशस्य वेधसः । मनुस्तस्याभवत्पुत्रश्छिन्नसर्वार्थसंशयः ॥ 108.3 ॥
sūryādhikāraṁ vahato viṣṇorīśasya vedhasaḥ manustasyābhavatputraśchinnasarvārthasaṁśayaḥ
To him, bearing the offices of the Sun, of Vishnu, of Ishana, and of the Creator, a son was born, Manu, all his doubts on every matter dispelled.
Verse 4 (markandeya.108.4)
मन्वन्तराधिपो विप्र यस्य सप्तममन्तरम् । इक्ष्वाकुर्नाभगो रिष्टो महाबलपराक्रमः ॥ 108.4 ॥
manvantarādhipo vipra yasya saptamamantaram ikṣvākurnābhago riṣṭo mahābalaparākramaḥ
He, O Brahmin, is the lord of the seventh Manvantara; Ikshvaku, Nabhaga, Rishta, of great strength and valor,

नरिष्यन्तोऽथ नाभागः पृषध्रो धृष्ट एव च । एते पुत्रा मनोस्तस्य पृथग्राज्यस्य पालकाः ॥ 108.5 ॥
nariṣyanto’tha nābhāgaḥ pṛṣadhro dhṛṣṭa eva ca ete putrā manostasya pṛthagrājyasya pālakāḥ
Narishyanta, then Nabhaga again, Prishadhra, and Dhrishta — these were the sons of that Manu, each the ruler of his own separate realm,

विख्यातकीर्त्तयः सर्वे सर्वे शस्त्रास्त्रपारगाः । विशिष्टतरमन्विच्छन्मनुः पुत्रं तथा पुनः ॥ 108.6 ॥
vikhyātakīrttayaḥ sarve sarve śastrāstrapāragāḥ viśiṣṭataramanvicchanmanuḥ putraṁ tathā punaḥ
all of renowned fame, all masters of every weapon and missile. Then Manu, seeking yet another, still more excellent son,

मित्रावरुणयोरिष्टिं चकार कृतिनां वरः । यत्र चापहुते होतुरपचारान्महामुने ॥ 108.7 ॥
mitrāvaruṇayoriṣṭiṁ cakāra kṛtināṁ varaḥ yatra cāpahute hoturapacārānmahāmune
performed a sacrifice to Mitra and Varuna, best among the accomplished; and there, O great sage, when the priest's invocation went astray,

इला नाम समुत्पन्ना मनोः कन्या सुमध्यमा । तां दृष्ट्वा कन्यकां तत्र समुत्पन्नां ततो मनुः ॥ 108.8 ॥
ilā nāma samutpannā manoḥ kanyā sumadhyamā tāṁ dṛṣṭvā kanyakāṁ tatra samutpannāṁ tato manuḥ
there was born to Manu a slender-waisted daughter named Ila; and beholding that daughter thus born, Manu then—

तुष्टाव मित्रावरुणौ वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह । भवत्प्रसादात्तनयो विशिष्टो मे भवेदिति ॥ 108.9 ॥
tuṣṭāva mitrāvaruṇau vākyaṁ cedamuvāca ha bhavatprasādāttanayo viśiṣṭo me bhavediti
—praised Mitra and Varuna, and spoke these words: 'By your grace, may an excellent son be born to me.'
Verse 10 (markandeya.108.10)
कृते मखे समुत्पन्ना तनया मम धीमतः । यदि प्रसन्नौ वरदौ तदियं तनया मम ॥ 108.10 ॥
kṛte makhe samutpannā tanayā mama dhīmataḥ yadi prasannau varadau tadiyaṁ tanayā mama
'When the sacrifice was performed, this daughter was born to me, wise though I am; if you two boon-givers are pleased, then may this very daughter of mine—'
Verse 11 (markandeya.108.11)
प्रसादाद्भवतो पुत्रो भवत्वतिगुणान्वितः । तथेति चाभ्यामुक्ते देवाभ्यां सैव कन्यका ॥ 108.11 ॥
prasādādbhavato putro bhavatvatiguṇānvitaḥ tatheti cābhyāmukte devābhyāṁ saiva kanyakā
'—by your grace become for me a son endowed with excellent qualities.' When those two gods had said 'so be it,' that very maiden—
Verse 12 (markandeya.108.12)
इला समभवत्सद्यः सुद्युम्न इति विश्रुतः । पुनश्चेश्वरकोपेन मृगयामटता वने ॥ 108.12 ॥
ilā samabhavatsadyaḥ sudyumna iti viśrutaḥ punaśceśvarakopena mṛgayāmaṭatā vane
—Ila at once became a son renowned as Sudyumna; but again, through a certain lord's wrath, while wandering in the forest on a hunt,
Verse 13 (markandeya.108.13)
स्त्रीत्वमासादितं तेन मनुपुत्रेण धीमता । पुरूरवसनामानं चक्रवर्तिनमूर्जितम् ॥ 108.13 ॥
strītvamāsāditaṁ tena manuputreṇa dhīmatā purūravasanāmānaṁ cakravartinamūrjitam
that wise son of Manu came to attain the state of a woman; in that condition, she brought forth a mighty universal sovereign named Pururavas,

जनयामास तनयं यत्र सोमसुतो बुधः । जाते सुते पुनः कृत्वा सोऽश्वमेधं महाक्रतुम् ॥ 108.14 ॥
janayāmāsa tanayaṁ yatra somasuto budhaḥ jāte sute punaḥ kṛtvā so’śvamedhaṁ mahākratum
born there — whose own son was Budha, son of the Moon. Then, once that son was born, having again performed the great rite of the Ashvamedha,

पुरुषत्वमनुप्राप्तः सुद्युम्नः पार्थिवोऽभवत् । सुद्युम्नस्य त्रयः पुत्रा उत्कलो विनयो गयः ॥ 108.15 ॥
puruṣatvamanuprāptaḥ sudyumnaḥ pārthivo’bhavat sudyumnasya trayaḥ putrā utkalo vinayo gayaḥ
he regained the state of manhood, and Sudyumna became a king. Sudyumna had three sons: Utkala, Vinaya, and Gaya,

पुरुषत्वे महावीर्या यज्विनः पृथुलौजसः । पुरुषत्वे तु ये जातास्तस्य राज्ञस्त्रयः सुताः ॥ 108.16 ॥
puruṣatve mahāvīryā yajvinaḥ pṛthulaujasaḥ puruṣatve tu ye jātāstasya rājñastrayaḥ sutāḥ
of great might in his manhood, performers of sacrifice, of vast splendor; these three sons, born to that king while he was in the male state,

बुभुजुस्ते महीमेतां धर्मे नियतचेतसः । स्त्रीभूतस्य तु यो जातस्तस्य राज्ञः पुरूरवाः ॥ 108.17 ॥
bubhujuste mahīmetāṁ dharme niyatacetasaḥ strībhūtasya tu yo jātastasya rājñaḥ purūravāḥ
enjoyed this earth, their minds fixed on Dharma. But the son who was born to that king while in the state of a woman was Pururavas —
Verse 18 (markandeya.108.18)
न स लेभे महाभागं यतो बुधसुतो हि सः । ततो वसिष्ठवचनात्प्रतिष्ठानं पुरोत्तमम् । तस्मै दत्तं स राजाभूत्तत्रातीव मनोहरे ॥ 108.18 ॥
na sa lebhe mahābhāgaṁ yato budhasuto hi saḥ tato vasiṣṭhavacanātpratiṣṭhānaṁ purottamam tasmai dattaṁ sa rājābhūttatrātīva manohare
he did not obtain that illustrious portion, since he was the son of Budha; then, by the word of Vasishtha, the excellent city of Pratishthana was given to him, and he became king there, in that most delightful place.
