The Svarochisha Manvantara

Verse 1 (markandeya.67.1)

मार्कण्डेय उवाच ततः स्वारोचिषं नाम्ना द्युतिमन्तं प्रजापतिम् । मनुं चकार भगवांस्तस्य मन्वन्तरं शृणु ॥ 67.1 ॥

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca tataḥ svārociṣaṁ nāmnā dyutimantaṁ prajāpatim manuṁ cakāra bhagavāṁstasya manvantaraṁ śṛṇu

Markandeya said: Thereafter the Lord made Dyutimant, the Prajapati, into a Manu named Svarochisha; now hear of his Manvantara.

Verse 2 (markandeya.67.2)

तत्रान्तरे तु ये देवा मुनयस्तत्सुताश्च ये । भूपालाः क्रौष्टुके ये तान्गदतस्त्वं निशामय ॥ 67.2 ॥

tatrāntare tu ye devā munayastatsutāśca ye bhūpālāḥ krauṣṭuke ye tāngadatastvaṁ niśāmaya

O Kraushtuki, listen as I tell of the gods, the sages, his sons, and the kings who belonged to that period.

Verse 3 (markandeya.67.3)

देवाः पारावतास्तत्र तथैव तुषिता द्विज । स्वारोचिषेऽन्तरे चेन्द्रो विपश्चिदिति विश्रुतः ॥ 67.3 ॥

devāḥ pārāvatāstatra tathaiva tuṣitā dvija svārociṣe’ntare cendro vipaściditi viśrutaḥ

O brahmana, in that period the gods were the Paravatas and likewise the Tushitas; and in the Svarochisha period Indra was renowned by the name Vipashchit.

Verse 4 (markandeya.67.4)

ऊर्जस्तम्बस्तथा प्राणो दत्तोऽलिर्ऋषभस्तथा । निश्चरश्चार्ववीरश्च तत्र सप्तर्षयोऽभवन् ॥ 67.4 ॥

ūrjastambastathā prāṇo datto’lirṛṣabhastathā niścaraścārvavīraśca tatra saptarṣayo’bhavan

Urjastambha, likewise Prana, Datta, Ali, and Rishabha, together with Nishchara and Charuvira — these seven were the sages there.

Verse 5 (markandeya.67.5)

चैत्रकिंपुरुषाद्याश्च सुतास्तस्य महात्मनः । सप्तासन्सुमहावीर्याः पृथिवीपरिपालकाः ॥ 67.5 ॥

caitrakiṁpuruṣādyāśca sutāstasya mahātmanaḥ saptāsansumahāvīryāḥ pṛthivīparipālakāḥ

Chaitra, Kimpurusha, and the others were the sons of that great soul — seven mighty heroes who ruled over the earth.

Verse 6 (markandeya.67.6)

तस्य मन्वन्तरं यावत्तावत्तद्वंशविस्तरे । भुक्तेयमवनिः सर्वा द्वितीयं वै तदन्तरम् ॥ 67.6 ॥

tasya manvantaraṁ yāvattāvattadvaṁśavistare bhukteyamavaniḥ sarvā dvitīyaṁ vai tadantaram

For as long as his Manvantara lasted, this whole earth was enjoyed and governed through the extension of his line — this indeed was the second Manvantara.

Verse 7 (markandeya.67.7)

स्वरोचिषस्तु चरितं जन्म स्वारोचिषस्य च । निशम्य मुच्यते पापैः श्रद्धधानो हि मानवः ॥ 67.7 ॥

svarociṣastu caritaṁ janma svārociṣasya ca niśamya mucyate pāpaiḥ śraddhadhāno hi mānavaḥ

Whoever, with faith, hears the story of Svarochi and the birth of Svarochisha, is freed from all sins.
