Verse 1 (markandeya.75.1)
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca pañcamo'pi manurbrahman raivato nāma viśrutaḥ tasyotpattiṁ vistaraśaḥ śṛṇuṣva kathayāmi te
Markandeya said: O Brahmin, the fifth Manu too was renowned by the name Raivata; hear his origin in full, as I relate it to you.
Verse 2 (markandeya.75.2)
ṛṣirāsīnmahābhāga ṛtavāgiti viśrutaḥ tasyāputrasya putro'bhūdrevatyante mahātmanaḥ
There was a greatly fortunate sage, renowned by the name Ritavak; to that great-souled, sonless one a son was born at the very end of the Revati asterism.
Verse 3 (markandeya.75.3)
sa tasya vidhivaccakre jātakarmādikāḥ kriyāḥ tathopanayanādīṁśca sa cāśīlo'bhavanmune
He duly performed for him the birth rites and the rest, and also the sacred-thread ceremony and so on; but, O sage, that son turned out ill-tempered.
Verse 4 (markandeya.75.4)
yataḥ prabhṛti jāto'sau tataḥ prabhṛti so'pyṛṣiḥ dīrgharogaparāmarśamavāpa munipuṅgavaḥ
From the very time he was born, that foremost of sages himself began to suffer from a long, lingering illness.
Verse 5 (markandeya.75.5)
mātā tasya parāmārti kuṣṭharogādipīḍitā jagāma sa pitā cāsya cintayāmāsa duḥ khitaḥ
His mother too became severely afflicted, tormented by leprosy and other ailments; and his father went about, sorrowfully lost in thought.
Verse 6 (markandeya.75.6)
kimetaditi so'pyasya putro'pyatyantadurmatiḥ jagrāha bhāryāmanyasya muniputrasya saṁmukhīm
"What is this?" he wondered, for this son of his had proved utterly wicked-minded — he had seized another sage's son's wife right before his eyes.
Verse 7 (markandeya.75.7)
Then, with a dejected mind, Ritavak said this: "For men, having no son at all is preferable to having a wicked son.
Verse 8 (markandeya.75.8)
kuputro hṛdayāyāsaṁ sarvadā kurute pituḥ mātuśca svargasaṁsthāṁśca svapitṝn pātayatyadhaḥ
A wicked son forever brings anguish to his father's heart, and casts down his mother and his ancestors dwelling in heaven besides.
Verse 9 (markandeya.75.9)
suhṛdāṁ nopakārāya pitṝṇāñca na tṛptaye pitrorduḥ khāya dhig janma tasya duṣkṛtakarmaṇaḥ
He is of no benefit to friends, nor does he satisfy the ancestors; he brings only sorrow to his parents — cursed be the birth of such an evildoer.
Verse 10 (markandeya.75.10)
dhanyāste tanayā yeṣāṁ sarvalokābhisaṁmatāḥ paropakāriṇaḥ śāntāḥ sādhukarmaṇyanuvratāḥ
Blessed are those whose sons are honored by all the world, benefactors of others, tranquil, and devoted to righteous deeds.
Verse 11 (markandeya.75.11)
anirvṛtaṁ tathā mandaṁ paralokaparāṅmukham narakāya na sadgatyai kuputrālambi janmanaḥ
A birth propped up by a restive, dull-witted son who turns his face from the world beyond — such a birth leads neither to hell nor to a good end.
Verse 12 (markandeya.75.12)
karoti suhṛdāṁ dainyamahitānāṁ tathā mudam akāle ca jarāṁ pitroḥ kuputraḥ kurute dhruvam
He brings destitution to friends and delight to enemies; a wicked son surely brings a premature old age upon his parents.
Verse 13 (markandeya.75.13)
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca evaṁ so'tyantaduṣṭasya putrasya caritairmuniḥ dahyamānamanovṛttirvṛttaṁ gargamapṛcchata
Markandeya said: Thus, his heart burning at his exceedingly wicked son's conduct, that sage asked Garga about what had happened.
Verse 14 (markandeya.75.14)
ṛtavāguvāca suvratena purā vedā gṛhītā vidhivanmayā samapya vedān vidhivat kṛto dāraparigrahaḥ
Ritavak said: Formerly, keeping my vows well, I duly received the Vedas; and having completed the Vedas, I duly took a wife.
Verse 15 (markandeya.75.15)
sadāreṇa kriyāḥ kāryāḥ śrautāḥ smārtā vaṣaṭkriyāḥ na me nyūnāḥ kṛtāḥ kāścidyāvadadya mahāmune
With my wife I have performed all the required rites, the shrauta and smarta vashatkara acts alike; O great sage, not one of them has ever fallen short at my hands, to this very day.
Verse 16 (markandeya.75.16)
garbhādhānavidhānena na kāmamanurudhyatā putrārthaṁ janitaścāyaṁ punnāmno bibhyatā mune
In the rite of conception I never let desire govern me; O sage, it was only from fear of the hell called Put that I begot this son, for a son's sake.
Verse 17 (markandeya.75.17)
so'yaṁ kimātmadoṣeṇa mama doṣaṇa vā mune asmadduḥ khavaho jāto dauḥ śīlyād bandhuśokadaḥ
Is it then through some fault of his own, or through some fault of mine, O sage, that he has been born a bearer of sorrow to us, and, through his wickedness, a cause of grief to his kinsmen?
Verse 18 (markandeya.75.18)
revatyante muniśreṣṭha ! jāto'yaṁ tanayastava tena duḥ khāya te duṣṭe kāle yasmādajāyata
Garga said: O foremost of sages, this son of yours was born at the very end of the Revati asterism; therefore, O wicked hour, it is because he was born at that time that he has become a cause of sorrow to you.
Verse 19 (markandeya.75.19)
There is no fault in you here, nor in his mother, nor in your lineage; the cause of his wickedness lies solely in his having been born at the very end of Revati.
Verse 20 (markandeya.75.20)
ṛtavāguvāca yasmānmamaikaputrasya revatyantasamudbhavam dauḥ śīlyametat sā tasmāt patatāmāśu revatī
Ritavak said: Since this wickedness of my only son has arisen from his birth at the end of Revati — then let Revati fall from the sky this very instant!
Verse 21 (markandeya.75.21)
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca tenaivaṁ vyāhṛte śāpe revatyṛkṣaṁ papāta ha paśyataḥ sarvalokasya vismayāviṣṭacetasaḥ
Markandeya said: The very moment that curse was pronounced by him, the asterism Revati fell from the sky, before the eyes of the whole world, whose minds were struck with astonishment.
Verse 22 (markandeya.75.22)
revatyṛkṣañca patitaṁ kumudādrau samantataḥ bhāvayāmāsa sahasā vanakandaranirjharam
And that fallen asterism Revati, coming down upon Mount Kumudadri from every side, suddenly filled it with forest caverns and springs.
Verse 23 (markandeya.75.23)
kumudādriśca tatpātāt khyāto raivatako'bhavat atīva ramyaḥ sarvasyāṁ pṛthivyāṁ pṛthivīdharaḥ
From that very fall, Mount Kumudadri became renowned by the name Raivataka — the most beautiful mountain upon the whole earth.
Verse 24 (markandeya.75.24)
tasyarkṣasya tu yā kāntirjātā paṅkajinī saraḥ tato jajñe tadā kanyā rūpeṇātīva śobhanā
From the radiance of that asterism there arose a lotus-filled pool; and from it, then, was born a maiden of exceedingly beautiful form.
Verse 25 (markandeya.75.25)
revatīkāntisambhūtāṁ tāṁ dṛṣṭvā pramuco muniḥ tasyā nāma cakāretthaṁ revatī nāma bhāgure
Seeing that maiden, born of Revati's radiance, the sage Pramucha, O Bhagura, accordingly gave her the name "Revati."
Verse 26 (markandeya.75.26)
poṣayāmāsa caivaitāṁ svāśramābhyāsasambhavām pramucaḥ sa mahābhāgastasminneva mahācale
That greatly fortunate Pramucha nurtured her, born so near his own hermitage, upon that very great mountain.
Verse 27 (markandeya.75.27)
Seeing her, now come to youth, that maiden of beautiful form, the sage began to wonder: "Who might become her husband?"
Verse 28 (markandeya.75.28)
evaṁ cintayatastasya yayau kālo mahān mune na cāsasāda sadṛśaṁ varaṁ tasyā mahāmuniḥ
Thus pondering, O sage, a very long time passed; and that great sage could find no suitable groom for her.
Verse 29 (markandeya.75.29)
tatastasyā varaṁ praṣṭumagniṁ sa pramuco muniḥ viveśa vahniśālāṁ vai praṣṭāraṁ prāha havyabhuk
Then, to inquire about a groom for her, the sage Pramucha entered the fire-chamber, and Agni, the fire-god, spoke to him who had come to ask —
Verse 30 (markandeya.75.30)
mahābalo mahāvīryaḥ priyavāg dharmavatsalaḥ durgamo nāma bhavitā bhartā hyasya mahīpatiḥ
"Mighty, of great valor, gentle of speech, devoted to dharma — a king named Durgama shall become her husband."
Verse 31 (markandeya.75.31)

Markandeya said: After this, O sage, the wise King Durgama, in the course of a hunting expedition, arrived at that hermitage —
Verse 32 (markandeya.75.32)
priyavratānvayabhavo mahābalaparākramaḥ putro vikramaśīlasya kālindījaṭharodbhavaḥ

Verse 33 (markandeya.75.33)
sa praviśyāśramapadaṁ tāṁ tanvīṁ jagatīpatiḥ apaśyamānastamṛṣiṁ priyetyāmantrya pṛṣṭavān
Entering that hermitage-ground, that lord of the earth, seeing the slender maiden but not finding the sage there, addressed her as "dear one" and asked her:
Verse 34 (markandeya.75.34)

Verse 35 (markandeya.75.35)
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca agnisālāṁ gato viprastacchrutvā tasya bhāṣitam priyetyāmantraṇañcaiva niścakrāma tvarānvitaḥ

Verse 37 (markandeya.75.37)
tasmin dṛṣṭe tataḥ śiṣyamuvāca sa tu gautamam gautamānīyatāṁ śīghramargho'sya jagatīpateḥ
Seeing him, he then said to his disciple Gautama: "O Gautama, quickly bring the guest-offering for this king.
Verse 38 (markandeya.75.38)
ekastāvadayaṁ bhūpaścirakālādupāgataḥ. jāmātā ca viśeṣeṇa yogyor'ghasya mato mama
For one thing, this king has come after a long while; and above all, in my view he is a worthy son-in-law, deserving of this offering."
Verse 39 (markandeya.75.39)
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca tataḥ sa cintayāmāsa rājā jāmātṛkāraṇam viveda ca na tanmaunī jagṛher'ghañca taṁ nṛpaḥ

Verse 43 (markandeya.75.43)

Verse 44 (markandeya.75.44)

Verse 45 (markandeya.75.45)
rājovāca subhadrāṁ śāntatanayāṁ kāverītanayāṁ vibho surāṣṭrajāṁ sujātāñca kadambāñca varūthajām
The king said: Subhadra, Shantatanaya, Kaveritanaya, O lord, Surashtraja, Sujata, and Kadamba, Varuthaja —
Verse 46 (markandeya.75.46)
vipāṭhāṁ nandinīñcaiva vedmi bhāryāṁ gṛhe dvija tiṣṭhanti me na bhagavan revatīṁ vedmi kānviyam

Verse 47 (markandeya.75.47)

The sage said: This is that very lovely one whom you just now addressed as "priye"; O king, have you forgotten? She is your praiseworthy wife.
Verse 48 (markandeya.75.48)
rājovāca satyamuktaṁ mayā kintu bhāvo duṣṭo na me mune nātra kopaṁ bhavān kartumarhatyasmāsu yācitaḥ
The king said: What I said was indeed true, O sage, but my intention was not corrupt; you ought not be angry with me on this account, especially since I now entreat you.
Verse 49 (markandeya.75.49)
ṛṣiruvāca tattvaṁ bravīṣi bhūpāla ! na bhāvastava dūṣitaḥ vyājahāra bhavānetadvahninā nṛpa coditaḥ
The sage said: O king, what you say is indeed true — your intention is not corrupt; you spoke this only because you were prompted by Agni himself.
Verse 50 (markandeya.75.50)
mayā pṛṣṭo hutavahaḥ ko'syā bharteti pārthiva bhavitā tena cāpyukto bhavānevādya vai varaḥ
O king, when I asked, Agni, the fire-bearer, told me who her husband would be; and it was he who declared that you yourself would be her groom this very day.
Verse 51 (markandeya.75.51)
tadgṛhyatāṁ mayā dattā tubhyaṁ kanyā narādhipa priyetyāmantritā ceyaṁ vicāraṁ kuruṣe katham
Therefore, O lord of men, accept this maiden given by me; you yourself have already addressed her as "priye" — why then do you hesitate?
Verse 52 (markandeya.75.52)
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca tato'sāvabhavanmaunī tenoktaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ ṛṣistathodyataḥ kartuṁ tasyā vaivāhikaṁ vidhim
Markandeya said: Then that lord of the earth, thus addressed, fell silent; and the sage made ready to perform her wedding rites.
Verse 53 (markandeya.75.53)

To her father, thus preparing for her wedding, that maiden, her face bowed in modesty, said something, O great sage.
Verse 54 (markandeya.75.54)

yadi me prītimāṁstāta prisādaṁ kartumarhasi revatyṛkṣe vivāhaṁ me tatkarotu prasāditaḥ
"Father, if you feel affection for me and are willing to show me grace, then I beg this of you: let my marriage be performed, in your kindness, under the very asterism Revati."
Verse 55 (markandeya.75.55)
