Chapter 83All chaptersChapter 85

Verse 1 (markandeya.84.1)

ṛṣiruvāca tataḥ suragaṇāḥ sarve devyā indrapurogamāḥ stutimārebhire kartuṁ nihate mahiṣāsure

The sage said: Then, when Mahishasura had been slain, all the hosts of gods, with Indra at their head, began to offer praise to the goddess.

Verse 2 (markandeya.84.2)

śakrādayaḥ suragaṇā nihate ’tivīrye tasmin durātmani surāribale ca devyā tāṁ tuṣṭuvuḥ praṇatinamraśirodharāṁsā vāgbhiḥ praharṣapulakodgamacārudehāḥ

When that most mighty evil-minded one and the army of the enemies of the gods had been slain by the goddess, the hosts of gods, headed by Shakra, praised her with their heads, necks, and shoulders bowed low in reverence, their bodies made beautiful with the thrill of joy.

Verse 3 (markandeya.84.3)

devā ūcuḥ devyā yayā tatamidaṁ jagadātmaśaktyā niḥ śeṣadevagaṇaśaktisamūhamūrtyā tāmambikāmakhiladevamarṣipūjyāṁ bhaktyā natāḥ sma vidadhātu śubhāni sā naḥ

The gods said: To that goddess by whose own power this universe is pervaded, who is the embodied totality of the combined powers of all the hosts of gods, to that Ambika, worshipped by all gods and sages, we bow in devotion; may she grant us blessings.

Verse 4 (markandeya.84.4)

yasyāḥ prabhāvamatulaṁ bhagavānananto brahmā haraśca nahi vaktumalaṁ balaṁ ca sā caṇḍikākhilajagatparipālanāya nāśāya cāśubhayasya matiṁ karotu

Whose incomparable glory and power even the blessed Ananta, Brahma, and Hara are not able to describe — may that Chandika resolve upon the protection of the whole world, and upon the destruction of misfortune.

Verse 5 (markandeya.84.5)

yā śrīḥ svayaṁ sukṛtināṁ bhavaneṣvalakṣmīḥ pāpātmanāṁ kṛtadhiyāṁ hṛdayeṣu buddhiḥ śraddhāṁ satāṁ kulajanaprabhavasya lajjā tāṁ tvāṁ natāḥ sma paripālaya devi viśvam

She who is herself Shri in the homes of the virtuous, and Alakshmi in the homes of the sinful; who is Buddhi in the hearts of the wise, Shraddha in the hearts of the good, and Lajja in the well-born — to you we bow; protect the universe, O goddess.

Verse 6 (markandeya.84.6)

kiṁ varṇayāma tava rūpamacintyametat kiṁ cātivīryamasurakṣayakāri bhūri kiṁ cāhaveṣu caritāni tavādbhutāni sarveṣu devyasuradevagaṇādikeṣu

How shall we describe this inconceivable form of yours? How your immense and exceeding valor, that brings destruction upon the asuras? How your wondrous deeds performed in battles against all the hosts of gods, asuras, and the rest, O goddess?

Verse 7 (markandeya.84.7)

hetuḥ samastajagatāṁ triguṇāpi doṣair na jñāyase hariharādibhirapyapārā sarvāśrayākhilamidaṁ jagadaṁśabhūtam avyākṛtā hi paramā prakṛtistvamādyā

You are the cause of all the worlds; though possessed of the three gunas, you are untouched by their faults; you are boundless, not fully known even by Hari, Hara, and the rest; the refuge of all, of whom this entire world is but a part — you are indeed the primal, unmanifest, supreme Prakriti.

Verse 8 (markandeya.84.8)

yasyāḥ samastasuratā samudīraṇena tṛptiṁ prayānti sakaleṣu makheṣu devi svāhāsi vai pitṛgaṇasya ca tṛptihetur uccāryase tvamata eva janaiḥ svadhā ca

By the mere utterance of whose name all the gods attain satisfaction in every sacrifice — you indeed are Svaha; and, being the cause of the satisfaction of the hosts of the ancestors, you are for that reason invoked by people as Svadha as well.

Verse 9 (markandeya.84.9)

yā muktiheturavicintyamahāvratā tvam abhyasyase suniyatendriyatattvasāraiḥ mokṣārthibhirmunibhirastasamastadoṣair vidyāsi sā bhagavatī paramā hi devi

You, whose great vow is inconceivable, who are the cause of liberation, are practiced by sages who seek liberation, whose senses are fully controlled, who know the essence of truth, and who have cast off every fault — you are indeed that supreme, divine Knowledge, O goddess.

Verse 10 (markandeya.84.10)

śabdātmikā suvimalargyajuṣāṁ nidhānam udgītharamyapadapāṭhavatāṁ ca sāmnām devī trayī bhagavatī bhavabhāvanāya vārtā ca sarvajagatāṁ paramārtihantrī

You are embodied Sound, the treasury of the utterly pure Rig and Yajur Vedas, and of the Samans with their beautiful Udgitha verses; you are the divine Triple Veda, existing for the sustaining of the world; and you are the livelihood of all creatures, the supreme remover of affliction.

Verse 11 (markandeya.84.11)

medhāsi devi viditākhilaśāstrasārā durgāsi durgabhavasāgaranaurasaṅgā śrīḥ kaiṭabhārihṛdayaikakṛtādhivāsā gaurī tvameva śaśimaulikṛtapratiṣṭhā

You are Medha, O goddess, by whom the essence of all scriptures is known; you are Durga, the unfailing boat that carries beings across the difficult ocean of worldly existence; you are Shri, who has made her sole dwelling in the heart of the Enemy of Kaitabha; you alone are Gauri, established by the moon-crested one.

Verse 12 (markandeya.84.12)

īṣatsahāsamamalaṁ paripūrṇacandra- bimbānukāri kanakottamakāntikāntam atyadbhutaṁ prahṛtamāttaruṣā tathāpi vaktraṁ vilokya sahasā mahiṣāsureṇa

Your face — faintly smiling, spotless, resembling the orb of the full moon, lovely with the finest golden radiance — was struck, wondrously, all at once, by the enraged Mahishasura —

Verse 13 (markandeya.84.13)

dṛṣṭvā tu devi kupitaṁ bhrukuṭīkarālam udyacchaśāṅkasadṛśacchavi yanna sadyaḥ prāṇānmumoca mahīṣastadatīva citraṁ kairjīvyate hi kupitāntakadarśanena

But seeing that face of yours, now angered and terrible with knitted brows, though it still shone like the rising moon, Mahisha did not at once give up his life — how strange indeed! For who, having beheld the face of enraged Death, could yet live on?

Verse 14 (markandeya.84.14)

devi prasīda paramā bhavatī bhavāya sadyo vināśayasi kopavatī kulāni vijñātametadadhunaiva yadastametan nītaṁ balaṁ suvipulaṁ mahiṣāsurasya

Be gracious, O goddess! When at peace, you are the supreme cause of well-being; but when angered, you instantly destroy whole lineages. This we have just now witnessed, in that the vast army of Mahishasura has been brought to nought.

Verse 15 (markandeya.84.15)

te saṁmatā janapadeṣu dhanāni teṣāṁ teṣāṁ yaśāṁsi na ca sīdati dharmavargaḥ dhanyāsta eva nibhṛtātmajabhṛtyadārā yeṣāṁ sadābhyudayadā bhavatī prasannā

Honored are they in their lands, secure their wealth, unfailing their fame, and unshaken their store of merit; blessed indeed are they, their children, servants, and wives ever secure, toward whom you, ever the giver of prosperity, remain gracious.

Verse 16 (markandeya.84.16)

dharmyāṇi devi sakalāni sadaiva karmāṇy atyādṛtaḥ pratidinaṁ sukṛtī karoti svargaṁ prayāti ca tato bhavatīprasādāl lokatraye ’pi phaladā nanu devi tena

O goddess, the virtuous man, with utmost reverence, performs all his righteous duties day after day, and thereby, by your grace, attains heaven; thus indeed, O goddess, are you the bestower of fruit throughout all three worlds.

Verse 17 (markandeya.84.17)

durge smṛtā harasi bhītimaśeṣajantoḥ svasthaiḥ smṛtā matimatīva śubhāṁ dadāsi dāridryaduḥkhabhayahāriṇi kā tvadanyā sarvopakārakaraṇāya sadā ’ ’rdracittā

When called to mind in danger, you remove the fear of every creature; called to mind by those at ease, you bestow upon them an exceedingly auspicious understanding. O remover of poverty, sorrow, and fear — who besides you is ever tender-hearted, ready for the good of all?

Verse 18 (markandeya.84.18)

ebhirhatairjagadupaiti sukhaṁ tathaite kurvantu nāma narakāya cirāya pāpam saṁgrāmamṛtyumadhigamya divaṁ prayāntu matveti nūnamahitān vinihaṁsi devi

"With these slain, the world attains happiness — even though, in truth, they have long committed the sin that leads to hell; yet let them, obtaining death in battle, go to heaven" — thinking thus, O goddess, you surely slay your enemies.

Verse 19 (markandeya.84.19)

dṛṣṭvaiva kiṁ na bhavatī prakaroti bhasma sarvāsurānariṣu yatprahiṇoṣi śastram lokān prayāntu ripavo ’pi hi śastrapūtā itthaṁ matirbhavati teṣvapi te ’tisādhvī

Could you not simply reduce all the asuras to ashes by a glance alone? Yet you release your weapon upon your enemies instead, thinking, "Let even my foes, purified by my weapon, attain higher worlds" — such is your utterly noble intent, even toward them.

Verse 20 (markandeya.84.20)

khaḍgaprabhānikaravisphuraṇaistathograiḥ śūlāgrakāntinivahena dṛśo ’surāṇām yannāgatā vilayamaṁśumadindukhaṇḍa- yogyānanaṁ tava vilokayatāṁ tadetat

That the eyes of the asuras, gazing upon your face — fit to be compared to a crescent moon — did not perish, dazzled by the fierce flashing brilliance of your sword's blade and the mass of splendor at your trident's point — this too is due to your grace.

Verse 21 (markandeya.84.21)

durvṛttavṛttaśamanaṁ tava devi śīlaṁ rūpaṁ tathaitadavicintyamatulyamanyaiḥ vīryaṁ ca hantṛ hṛtadevaparākramāṇāṁ vairiṣvapi prakaṭitaiva dayā tvayettham

O goddess, your very nature is the pacifying of the conduct of the wicked; your form, likewise, is inconceivable, unequalled by any other; and your valor slays those who have robbed the gods of their might — and yet, even toward your enemies, compassion alone is what you show.

Verse 22 (markandeya.84.22)

kenopamā bhavatu te ’sya parākramasya rūpaṁ ca śatrubhayakāryatihāri kutra citte kṛpā samaraniṣṭhuratā ca dṛṣṭā tvayyeva devi varade bhuvanatraye ’pi

To what shall this valor of yours be compared? And where else is there a form that at once instills terror in enemies and yet utterly enchants? Compassion in the heart, and ruthlessness in battle — these are seen together, O bestower of boons, in you alone, throughout all three worlds.

Verse 23 (markandeya.84.23)

trailokyametadakhilaṁ ripunāśanena trātaṁ tvayā samaramūrdhani te ’pi hatvā nītā divaṁ ripugaṇā bhayamapyapāstam asmākamunmadasurāribhavaṁ namaste

This entire triple world has been saved by you through the destruction of the enemy; and by slaying them in the forefront of battle, you have led even the hosts of your foes to heaven, and have dispelled our fear born of the arrogant enemies of the gods — homage to you!

Verse 24 (markandeya.84.24)

śūlena pāhi no devi pāhi khaḍgena cāmbike ghaṇṭāsvanena naḥ pāhi cāpajyāniḥ svanena ca

Protect us, O goddess, with your trident; protect us, O Ambika, with your sword; protect us with the sound of your bell, and with the twang of your bowstring.

Verse 25 (markandeya.84.25)

prācyāṁ rakṣa pratīcyāṁ ca caṇḍike rakṣa dakṣiṇe bhrāmaṇenātmaśūlasya uttarasyāṁ tatheśvari

Protect us in the east, O Chandika, and in the west; protect us in the south; and likewise in the north, O Sovereign Lady, by the whirling of your own trident.

Verse 26 (markandeya.84.26)

saumyāni yāni rūpāṇi trailokye vicaranti te yāni cātyarthaghorāṇi tai rakṣāsmāṁstathā bhuvam

Whatever gentle forms of yours move about the three worlds, and whatever exceedingly terrible ones — with those, protect us, and likewise this earth.

Verse 27 (markandeya.84.27)

khaḍgaśūlagadādīni yāni cāstrāṇi te ’mbike karapallavasaṅgīni tairasmān rakṣa sarvataḥ

O Ambika, with whatever weapons — sword, trident, mace, and the rest — held fast in your tender, sprout-like hands, with those protect us on every side.

Verse 28 (markandeya.84.28)

ṛṣīruvāca evaṁ stutā surairdivyaiḥ kusumairnandanodbhavaiḥ arcitā jagatāṁ dhātrī tathā gandhānulepanaiḥ

The sage said: Thus praised by the gods, and worshipped with divine flowers grown in the Nandana garden and with fragrant unguents, she who sustains the worlds —

Verse 29 (markandeya.84.29)

bhaktyā samastaistridaśārdivyairdhūpaistu dhūpitā prāha prasādasumukhī samastān praṇatān surān

— devotedly perfumed by all the gods with divine incense, spoke, her face gracious with favor, to all the gods bowed low before her.

Verse 30 (markandeya.84.30)

devyuvāca vriyatāṁ tridaśāḥ sarve yadasmatto ’bhivāñchitam dadāmyahamatiprītyā stavairebhiḥ supūjitā

The goddess said: Let all the gods choose whatever is desired from me. Greatly pleased, and well worshipped by these hymns, I grant it.

Verse 31 (markandeya.84.31)

kartavyamaparaṁ yacca duṣkaraṁ tanna vidmahe ityākarṇye vaco devyāḥ pratyūcuste divaukasaḥ

"And whatever else remains to be done, however difficult, I do not consider it beyond me." Hearing these words of the goddess, the dwellers of heaven replied.

Verse 32 (markandeya.84.32)

devā ūcuḥ bhagavatyā kṛtaṁ sarvaṁ na kiñcidavaśiṣyate yadayaṁ nihataḥ śatrurasmākaṁ mahiṣāsuraḥ

The gods said: Everything has been accomplished by the Blessed Lady; nothing at all remains, in that this enemy of ours, Mahishasura, has been slain.

Verse 33 (markandeya.84.33)

yadi cāpi varo deyastvayāsmākaṁ maheśvari saṁsmṛtā saṁsmṛtā tvaṁ no hiṁsethāḥ paramāpadaḥ

Yet if indeed a boon is to be granted by you to us, O great Sovereign Lady, then, whenever we call you to mind, again and again, may you destroy our direst calamities.

Verse 34 (markandeya.84.34)

yaśca martyaḥ stavairebhistvāṁ stoṣyatyamalānane tasya vittardhivibhavairdhanadārādisampadām vṛddhaye ’smātprasannā tvaṁ bhavethāḥ sarvadāmbike

And O flawless-faced one, whatever mortal shall praise you with these very hymns — being pleased with him, may you, O Ambika, ever grant him the increase of his wealth, prosperity, and abundance, and of riches such as wife and offspring.

Verse 35 (markandeya.84.35)

ṛṣiruvāca iti prasāditā devairjagato ’rthe tathātmanaḥ tathetyuktvā bhadrakālī babhūvāntarhitā nṛpa

The sage said: Thus propitiated by the gods, for the sake of the world as well as for their own, Bhadrakali, having said "so be it," vanished from sight, O king.

Verse 36 (markandeya.84.36)

ityetatkathitaṁ bhūpa sambhūtā sā yathā purā devī devaśarīrebhyo jagattrayahitaiṣiṇī

Thus, O king, has it been told how, in ancient times, that goddess — the well-wisher of the three worlds — came into being from the bodies of the gods.

Verse 37 (markandeya.84.37)

punaśca gaurīdehāt sā samudbhūtā yathābhavat vadhāya duṣṭadaityānāṁ tathā śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ

And how, once again, she arose from the body of Gauri, for the destruction of the wicked daityas, and likewise of Shumbha and Nishumbha —

Verse 38 (markandeya.84.38)

rakṣaṇāya ca lokānāṁ devānāmupakāriṇī tacchṛṇuṣva mayā ’khyātaṁ yathāvatkathayāmi te

— for the protection of the worlds, ever the benefactress of the gods: hear that account from me; I shall relate it to you exactly as it happened.
