Verse 1 (markandeya.94.1)

मार्कण्डेय उवाच सावर्णिकमिदं सम्यक्प्रोक्तं मन्वन्तरं तव । तथैव देवीमाहात्म्ये महिषासुरघातनम् ॥ 94.1 ॥

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca sāvarṇikamidaṁ samyakproktaṁ manvantaraṁ tava tathaiva devīmāhātmye mahiṣāsuraghātanam

Thus this Savarnika manvantara has been properly declared to you; and likewise, in the Devi Mahatmya, the slaying of Mahishasura has been told.

Verse 2 (markandeya.94.2)

उत्पत्तयश्च या देव्या मातॄणां च महाहवे । तथैव सम्भवो देव्याश्चामुण्डाया यथा भवः ॥ 94.2 ॥

utpattayaśca yā devyā mātṝṇāṁ ca mahāhave tathaiva sambhavo devyāścāmuṇḍāyā yathā bhavaḥ

So too were told the birth of the Goddess, the origin of the Mother-goddesses in the great battle, and likewise how the Goddess came to be as Chamunda.

Verse 3 (markandeya.94.3)

शिवदूत्याश्च माहात्म्यं वधः शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः । रक्तबीजवधश्चैव सर्वमेतत्तवोदितम् ॥ 94.3 ॥

śivadūtyāśca māhātmyaṁ vadhaḥ śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ raktabījavadhaścaiva sarvametattavoditam

The greatness of Shivaduti, the slaying of Shumbha and Nishumbha, and the killing of Raktabija — all this has been told to you.

Verse 4 (markandeya.94.4)

श्रूयतां मुनिशार्दूल सावर्णिकमथापरम् । दत्तपुत्रश्च सावर्णिर्भावी यो नवमो मनुः ॥ 94.4 ॥

śrūyatāṁ muniśārdūla sāvarṇikamathāparam dattaputraśca sāvarṇirbhāvī yo navamo manuḥ

Now hear, O tiger among sages, another Savarnika account: Savarni, son of Datta, who will be the ninth Manu.

Verse 5 (markandeya.94.5)

कथयामि मनोस्तस्य ये देवा मुनयो नृपाः । पारा मरीचिभर्गाश्च सुधर्माणस्तथा सुराः ॥ 94.5 ॥

kathayāmi manostasya ye devā munayo nṛpāḥ pārā marīcibhargāśca sudharmāṇastathā surāḥ

I shall tell of the gods, sages, and kings belonging to that Manu: among the gods there will be the Para, the Marichigarbha, and the Sudharman classes.

Verse 6 (markandeya.94.6)

एते त्रिधा भविष्यन्ति सर्वे द्वादशका गणाः । तेषामिन्द्रो भविष्यस्तु सहस्राक्षो महाबलः ॥ 94.6 ॥

ete tridhā bhaviṣyanti sarve dvādaśakā gaṇāḥ teṣāmindro bhaviṣyastu sahasrākṣo mahābalaḥ

These will all be threefold, each group numbering twelve; their Indra will be the mighty one named Sahasraksha.

Verse 7 (markandeya.94.7)

साम्प्रतं कार्तिकेयो यो वह्निपुत्रः षडाननः । अद्भुतो नाम शक्रोऽसौ भावी तस्यान्तरे मनोः ॥ 94.7 ॥

sāmprataṁ kārtikeyo yo vahniputraḥ ṣaḍānanaḥ adbhuto nāma śakro 'sau bhāvī tasyāntare manoḥ

He who is now Kartikeya, the six-faced son of Agni, will become — under the name Adbhuta — the Indra of that Manu's era.

Verse 8 (markandeya.94.8)

मेधातिथिर्वसुः सत्यो ज्योतिष्मान्द्युतिमांस्तथा । सप्तर्षयोऽन्यः सबलस्तथान्यो हव्यवाहनः ॥ 94.8 ॥

medhātithirvasuḥ satyo jyotiṣmāndyutimāṁstathā saptarṣayo 'nyaḥ sabalastathānyo havyavāhanaḥ

Medhatithi, Vasu, Satya, Jyotishman, and Dyutiman, another named Sabala, and yet another, Havyavahana — these will be the Seven Sages.

Verse 9 (markandeya.94.9)

धृष्टकेतुर्बर्हकेतुः खड्गहस्तो निरामयः । पृथुश्रवास्तथार्चिष्मान्भूरिद्युम्नो बृहद्भयः ॥ 94.9 ॥

dhṛṣṭaketurbarhaketuḥ khaḍgahasto nirāmayaḥ pṛthuśravāstathārciṣmānbhūridyumno bṛhadbhayaḥ

Dhrishtaketu, Barhaketu, Khadgahasta, Niramaya, Prithushravas, Archishman, Bhuridyumna, and Brihadbhaya —

Verse 10 (markandeya.94.10)

एते नृपसुतास्तस्य दत्तपुत्रस्य वै नृपाः । मनोस्तु दशमस्यान्यच्छृणु मन्वन्तरं द्विज ॥ 94.10 ॥

ete nṛpasutāstasya dattaputrasya vai nṛpāḥ manostu daśamasyānyacchṛṇu manvantaraṁ dvija

these are the sons — indeed the kings — of that Manu, Dattaputra Savarni. Now hear, O twice-born, of another manvantara, the tenth.

Verse 11 (markandeya.94.11)

मन्वन्तरे च दशमे ब्रह्मपुत्रस्य धीमतः । सुखासीना निरुद्धाश्च द्विप्रकाराः सुराः स्मृताः ॥ 94.11 ॥

manvantare ca daśame brahmaputrasya dhīmataḥ sukhāsīnā niruddhāśca dviprakārāḥ surāḥ smṛtāḥ

In the tenth manvantara, of the wise son of Brahma, the gods are remembered as of two kinds: the Sukhasinas and the Niruddhas.

Verse 12 (markandeya.94.12)

शतसंख्या हि ते देवा भविष्या भाविनो मनोः । यत्पुत्राणां शतं भावि तद्देवानां तदा शतम् ॥ 94.12 ॥

śatasaṁkhyā hi te devā bhaviṣyā bhāvino manoḥ yatputrāṇāṁ śataṁ bhāvi taddevānāṁ tadā śatam

Those gods of that future Manu will number a hundred; just as that Manu's sons will be a hundred, so too will the gods then be a hundred.

Verse 13 (markandeya.94.13)

शान्तिरिन्द्रस्तथा भावी सर्वैरिन्द्रगुणैर्युतः । सप्तर्षींस्तान्निबोध त्वं ये भविष्यन्ति वै तदा ॥ 94.13 ॥

śāntirindrastathā bhāvī sarvairindraguṇairyutaḥ saptarṣīṁstānnibodha tvaṁ ye bhaviṣyanti vai tadā

Shanti will then be Indra, endowed with all the qualities of Indra; now learn from me the Seven Sages who will appear at that time.

Verse 14 (markandeya.94.14)

आपोमूतिर्हविष्मांश्च सुकृती सत्य एव च । नाभागोऽप्रतिमश्चैव वासिष्ठश्चैव सप्तमः ॥ 94.14 ॥

āpomūtirhaviṣmāṁśca sukṛtī satya eva ca nābhāgo 'pratimaścaiva vāsiṣṭhaścaiva saptamaḥ

Apomurti, Havishman, Sukriti, and Satya, Nabhaga, Apratima, and, seventh, a descendant of Vasishtha.

Verse 15 (markandeya.94.15)

सुक्षेत्रश्चोत्तमौजाश्च भूरिषेणश्च वीर्यवान् । शतानीकोऽथ वृषभो ह्यनमित्रो जयद्रथः ॥ 94.15 ॥

sukṣetraścottamaujāśca bhūriṣeṇaśca vīryavān śatānīko 'tha vṛṣabho hyanamitro jayadrathaḥ

Sukshetra, Uttamaujas, the valiant Bhurishena, Shatanika, Vrishabha, Anamitra, and Jayadratha —

Verse 16 (markandeya.94.16)

भूरिद्युम्नः सुपर्वा च तस्यैते तनया मनोः । भविष्या धर्मपुत्रस्य सावर्णस्यान्तरं शृणु ॥ 94.16 ॥

bhūridyumnaḥ suparvā ca tasyaite tanayā manoḥ bhaviṣyā dharmaputrasya sāvarṇasyāntaraṁ śṛṇu

Bhuridyumna and Suparva — these are that Manu's sons. Now hear of the manvantara of the future Savarni who is son of Dharma.

Verse 17 (markandeya.94.17)

विहङ्गमाः कामगाश्च निर्माणरतयस्तथा । त्रिःप्रकारा भविष्यन्ति एकैकस्त्रिंशको गणः ॥ 94.17 ॥

vihaṅgamāḥ kāmagāśca nirmāṇaratayastathā triḥprakārā bhaviṣyanti ekaikastriṁśako gaṇaḥ

The Vihangamas, the Kamagas, and likewise the Nirmanaratis will be the gods, of three kinds, each group numbering thirty.

Verse 18 (markandeya.94.18)

मासर्तुदिवसा ये तु निर्माणपतयस्तु ते । विहङ्गमा रात्रयोऽथ मौहूर्त्ताः कामगा गणाः ॥ 94.18 ॥

māsartudivasā ye tu nirmāṇapatayastu te vihaṅgamā rātrayo 'tha mauhūrttāḥ kāmagā gaṇāḥ

The Nirmanapatis correspond in number to the months, seasons, and days; the Vihangamas to the nights; and the Kamaga group to the muhurtas.

Verse 19 (markandeya.94.19)

इन्द्रो वृषाख्यो भविता तेषां प्रख्यातविक्रमः । हविष्मांश्च वरिष्ठश्च ऋष्टिरन्यस्तथारुणिः ॥ 94.19 ॥

indro vṛṣākhyo bhavitā teṣāṁ prakhyātavikramaḥ haviṣmāṁśca variṣṭhaśca ṛṣṭiranyastathāruṇiḥ

Their Indra, of renowned valor, will be one named Vrisha; the Seven Sages will be Havishman, Varishtha, another named Rishti, and Aruni.

Verse 20 (markandeya.94.20)

निश्चरश्चानघश्चैव विष्टिश्चान्यो महामुनिः । सप्तर्षयोऽन्तरे तस्मिन्नग्नितेजाश्च सप्तमः ॥ 94.20 ॥

niścaraścānaghaścaiva viṣṭiścānyo mahāmuniḥ saptarṣayo 'ntare tasminnagnitejāśca saptamaḥ

Nishchara, Anagha, and another great sage, Vishti — among the Seven Sages of that era, the seventh will be Agniteja.

Verse 21 (markandeya.94.21)

सर्वत्रगः सुशर्मा च देवानीकः पुरूद्वहः । हेमधन्वा दृढायुश्च भाविनस्तत्सुता नृपाः ॥ 94.21 ॥

sarvatragaḥ suśarmā ca devānīkaḥ purūdvahaḥ hemadhanvā dṛḍhāyuśca bhāvinastatsutā nṛpāḥ

Sarvatraga, Susharma, Devanika, Purudvaha, Hemadhanva, and Dridhayu will be that Manu's future royal sons.

Verse 22 (markandeya.94.22)

द्वादशे रुद्रपुत्रस्य प्राप्ते मन्वन्तरे मनोः । सावर्णाख्याश्च ये देवा मुनयश्च शृणुष्व तान् ॥ 94.22 ॥

dvādaśe rudraputrasya prāpte manvantare manoḥ sāvarṇākhyāśca ye devā munayaśca śṛṇuṣva tān

When the twelfth manvantara arrives — of the Manu who is son of Rudra — hear of the gods called Savarnas, and of the sages.

Verse 23 (markandeya.94.23)

सुधर्माणः सुमनसो हरितो रोहितस्तथा । सुवर्णाश्च सुरास्तत्र पञ्चैते दशका गणाः ॥ 94.23 ॥

sudharmāṇaḥ sumanaso harito rohitastathā suvarṇāśca surāstatra pañcaite daśakā gaṇāḥ

The Sudharmans, the Sumanasas, the Haritas, and likewise the Rohitas, and the Suvarnas — these five groups of gods there, each numbering ten.

Verse 24 (markandeya.94.24)

तेषामिन्द्रस्तु विज्ञेय ऋतधामा महाबलः । सर्वैरिन्द्रगुणैर्युक्ताः सप्तर्षीनपि मे शृणु ॥ 94.24 ॥

teṣāmindrastu vijñeya ṛtadhāmā mahābalaḥ sarvairindraguṇairyuktāḥ saptarṣīnapi me śṛṇu

Know that their Indra will be the mighty Ritadhama, endowed with all the qualities of Indra; hear from me also of the Seven Sages.

Verse 25 (markandeya.94.25)

द्युतिस्तपस्वी सुतपास्तपोमूर्तिस्तपोनिधिः । तपोरतिस्तथैवान्यः सप्तमस्तु तपोधृतिः ॥ 94.25 ॥

dyutistapasvī sutapāstapomūrtistaponidhiḥ taporatistathaivānyaḥ saptamastu tapodhṛtiḥ

Dyuti, Tapasvin, Sutapas, Tapomurti, Taponidhi, and likewise another, Taporati — the seventh, Tapodhriti.

Verse 26 (markandeya.94.26)

देववानुपदेवश्च देवश्रेष्ठो विदूरथः । मित्रवान्मित्रविन्दश्च भाविनस्तत्सुता नृपाः ॥ 94.26 ॥

devavānupadevaśca devaśreṣṭho vidūrathaḥ mitravānmitravindaśca bhāvinastatsutā nṛpāḥ

Devavan, Upadeva, Devashreshtha, Viduratha, Mitravan, and Mitravinda will be that Manu's future royal sons.

Verse 27 (markandeya.94.27)

त्रयोदशस्य पर्याये रौच्याख्यस्य मनोः सुरान् । सप्तर्षींश्च नृपाञ्श्चैव गदतो मे निशामय ॥ 94.27 ॥

trayodaśasya paryāye raucyākhyasya manoḥ surān saptarṣīṁśca nṛpāñścaiva gadato me niśāmaya

In the course of the thirteenth manvantara, of the Manu called Raucya, listen as I tell of the gods, the Seven Sages, and the kings.

Verse 28 (markandeya.94.28)

सुधर्माणः सुरास्तत्र सुकर्माणस्तथापरे । सुशर्माणः सुरा ह्येते समस्ता मुनिसत्तम ॥ 94.28 ॥

sudharmāṇaḥ surāstatra sukarmāṇastathāpare suśarmāṇaḥ surā hyete samastā munisattama

The Sudharmans are the gods there, and others the Sukarmans, and likewise the Susharmans — these all, O best of sages, will be the gods of that era.

Verse 29 (markandeya.94.29)

महाबलो महावीर्यस्तेषामिन्द्रो दिवस्पतिः । भविष्यानथ सप्तर्षीन्गदतो मे निशामय ॥ 94.29 ॥

mahābalo mahāvīryasteṣāmindro divaspatiḥ bhaviṣyānatha saptarṣīngadato me niśāmaya

Their Indra, lord of heaven, will be of great strength and great valor; now hear from me also of the future Seven Sages.

Verse 30 (markandeya.94.30)

धृतिमानव्ययश्चैव तत्त्वदर्शी निरुत्सुकः । निर्मोहः सुतपाश्चान्यो निष्प्रकम्पश्च सप्तमः ॥ 94.30 ॥

dhṛtimānavyayaścaiva tattvadarśī nirutsukaḥ nirmohaḥ sutapāścānyo niṣprakampaśca saptamaḥ

Dhritiman, Avyaya, Tattvadarshin, Nirutsuka, Nirmoha, and another, Sutapas — the seventh, Nishprakampa.

Verse 31 (markandeya.94.31)

चित्रसेनो विचित्रश्च नियतिर्निर्भयो दृढः । सुनेत्रः क्षत्रबुद्धिश्च सुव्रतश्चैव तत्सुताः ॥ 94.31 ॥

citraseno vicitraśca niyatirnirbhayo dṛḍhaḥ sunetraḥ kṣatrabuddhiśca suvrataścaiva tatsutāḥ

Chitrasena, Vichitra, Niyati, Nirbhaya, Dridha, Sunetra, Kshatrabuddhi, and Suvrata will be that Manu's sons.
