The Marriage to Malini

Verse 1 (markandeya.98.1)

मार्कण्डेय उवाच ततस्तस्मान्नदीमध्यात्समुत्तस्थौ मनोरमा । प्रम्लोचा नाम तन्वङ्गी तत्समीपे वराप्सराः ॥ 98.1 ॥

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca tatastasmānnadīmadhyātsamuttasthau manoramā pramlocā nāma tanvaṅgī tatsamīpe varāpsarāḥ

Markandeya said: Then, from the midst of that river, there rose up near him a lovely, slender-limbed, excellent apsara named Pramlocha.

Verse 2 (markandeya.98.2)

सा चोवाच महात्मानं रुचिं सुमधुराक्षरम् । प्रश्रयावनता सुभूः प्रम्लोचा वै वराप्सराः ॥ 98.2 ॥

sā covāca mahātmānaṁ ruciṁ sumadhurākṣaram praśrayāvanatā subhūḥ pramlocā vai varāpsarāḥ

That excellent apsara Pramlocha, of lovely brows, bowing humbly, spoke to the great-souled Ruchi in sweet, gentle words.

Verse 3 (markandeya.98.3)

अतीव रूपिणी कन्या मत्सुता तपतां वर । जाता वरुणपुत्रेण पुष्करेण महात्मना ॥ 98.3 ॥

atīva rūpiṇī kanyā matsutā tapatāṁ vara jātā varuṇaputreṇa puṣkareṇa mahātmanā

'O best of ascetics, I have an exceedingly beautiful daughter, born to me of the great-souled Pushkara, son of Varuna.'

Verse 4 (markandeya.98.4)

तां गृहाण मया दत्तां भार्यार्थे वरवर्णिनीम् । मनुर्महामतिस्तस्यां समुत्पस्यति ते सुतः ॥ 98.4 ॥

tāṁ gṛhāṇa mayā dattāṁ bhāryārthe varavarṇinīm manurmahāmatistasyāṁ samutpasyati te sutaḥ

'Accept her, given by me, as your wife, that maiden of excellent form; in her a wise Manu shall be born to you as a son.'

Verse 5 (markandeya.98.5)

मार्कण्डेय उवाच तथेति तेन साऽप्युक्ता तस्मात्तोयाद्वपुष्मतीम् । उज्जहार ततः कन्यां मालिनी नाम नामतः ॥ 98.5 ॥

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca tatheti tena sā 'pyuktā tasmāttoyādvapuṣmatīm ujjahāra tataḥ kanyāṁ mālinī nāma nāmataḥ

Markandeya said: Having said 'so be it' to her, he then drew forth from that water the beautiful maiden named Malini.

Verse 6 (markandeya.98.6)

नद्याश्च पुलिने तस्मिन्स रुचिर्मुनिसत्तमः । जग्राह पाणिं विधिवत्समानाय्य महामुनीन् ॥ 98.6 ॥

nadyāśca puline tasminsa rucirmunisattamaḥ jagrāha pāṇiṁ vidhivatsamānāyya mahāmunīn

That best of sages, Ruchi, having gathered great sages together, duly took her hand in marriage there on that same riverbank.

Verse 7 (markandeya.98.7)

तस्यां तस्य सुतो जज्ञे महावीर्यो महामतिः । रौच्योऽभवत्पितुर्नाम्ना ख्यातोऽत्र वसुधातले ॥ 98.7 ॥

tasyāṁ tasya suto jajñe mahāvīryo mahāmatiḥ raucyo 'bhavatpiturnāmnā khyāto 'tra vasudhātale

In her a son was born to him, of great valor and great wisdom; he became known upon this earth, by his father's name, as Raucya.

Verse 8 (markandeya.98.8)

तस्य मन्वन्तरे देवास्तथा सप्तर्षयश्च ये । तनयाश्च नृपाश्चैव ते सम्यक्कथितास्तव ॥ 98.8 ॥

tasya manvantare devāstathā saptarṣayaśca ye tanayāśca nṛpāścaiva te samyakkathitāstava

The gods of his manvantara, and the Seven Sages, and his sons who became kings — all this has now been duly told to you.

Verse 9 (markandeya.98.9)

धर्मवृद्धिस्तथारोग्यं धनधान्यसुतोद्भवः । नृणां भवत्यसन्दिग्धमस्मिन्मन्वन्तरे श्रुते ॥ 98.9 ॥

dharmavṛddhistathārogyaṁ dhanadhānyasutodbhavaḥ nṛṇāṁ bhavatyasandigdhamasminmanvantare śrute

By hearing of this manvantara, growth in dharma, health, and the increase of wealth, grain, and offspring come to men without doubt.

Verse 10 (markandeya.98.10)

पितृस्तवं तथा श्रुत्वा पितॄणां च तथा गणान् । सर्वान्कामानवाप्नोति तत्प्रसादान्महामुने ॥ 98.10 ॥

pitṛstavaṁ tathā śrutvā pitṝṇāṁ ca tathā gaṇān sarvānkāmānavāpnoti tatprasādānmahāmune

And, O great sage, by likewise hearing the hymn to the ancestors and the classes of the ancestors, one obtains, through their grace, all one's desires.
