Srishti Khanda · Chapter 52
The Tale of the Women
Verse 1 (padma.1.52.1)
dvija uvāca māṁḍavyasya munerviṣṇośśūlāghātaḥ kathaṁ tanau patyau pativratāyāśca kathaṁ kuṣṭhaṁ kalevare
The brahmin said: How did the sage Mandavya come to suffer the stroke of the stake on his body? And how did leprosy come upon the body of the devoted wife's husband?
Verse 2 (padma.1.52.2)
hariruvāca śiśubhāvācca māṁḍavyo jhillikāyāmabhānataḥ vastideśe tṛṇaṁ datvā mohātsa ca mumoca tām
Hari said: In his childhood, Mandavya, unknowingly, having pierced a cricket at its bladder-region with a blade of grass, out of confusion released it.
Verse 3 (padma.1.52.3)
tenāpavādadoṣeṇa dharmasyājñātureva ca ahorātraṁ vyathā kṛcchrā bhuktā tena dvijanmanā
By that fault of transgression, and by ignorance of dharma, that twice-born suffered severe distress for a day and a night.
Verse 4 (padma.1.52.4)
kiṁtu samādhinā tena na jñātaṁ śūlasaṁbhavam kṛcchraṁ ca muninā kṛtsnaṁ yogābhyāsādbhṛśādapi
But through his meditative absorption, he did not perceive the origin of the impalement's pain; by the intense practice of yoga, the sage bore that whole hardship.
Verse 5 (padma.1.52.5)
kuṣṭhino brahmaṇo ghātādajiteṁdriyakāraṇāt pūtigaṁdhaṁ tanau kuṣṭhaṁ saṁjātaṁ dvijasattama
O best of the twice-born, because of harming a leprous brahmin, due to a former lack of self-control, foul-smelling leprosy arose on his body.
Verse 6 (padma.1.52.6)
purā viprāya tenaiva dattaṁ gaurīcatuṣṭayam kanyakātritayaṁ vipra tena tasya pativratā
Formerly, that very man had given a brahmin four images of Gauri, and three maidens, O brahmin — by that merit, his wife became devoted.
Verse 7 (padma.1.52.7)
And by this very reason, he attained equality with me. Where then is your astonishment in this, given that this working of Vedic karma is ancient?
Verse 8 (padma.1.52.8)
dvija uvāca kṛtyā nārī na yasyaiva tasya svargo bhaveddhruvam yathaitaccaritaṁ nātha sarveṣāṁ śivamiṣyate
The brahmin said: He who does not have a dutiful wife certainly does not attain heaven. Just as this story, O lord, is desired for the welfare of all —
Verse 9 (padma.1.52.9)
hariruvāca saṁti kṛtyāḥ striyaḥ kāścitpuṁsaḥ sarvasvadasya ca tatrāpyarakṣaṇīyāṁ ca manasāpi na dhārayet
Hari said: There are some scheming women, even toward a man who gives them everything he owns. One should not, even in thought, trust such an unworthy woman.
Verse 10 (padma.1.52.10)
na strīṇāmapriyaḥ kaścitpriyo vāpi na vidyate gāvastṛṇamivāraṇye prārthayaṁti navaṁnavam
For women, there is no one truly disliked, nor is there one truly loved — like cows grazing on grass in the forest, they ever desire what is new.
Verse 11 (padma.1.52.11)
pumāṁsaṁ vittahīnaṁ ca virūpaṁ guṇavarjitam akulīnaṁ ca bhṛtyaṁ ca kāminī bhajate dhruvam
A lustful woman certainly takes to a man devoid of wealth, ugly, devoid of virtue, low-born, and even a servant —
Verse 12 (padma.1.52.12)
bhartāraṁ ca guṇopetaṁ kulīnaṁ ca mahādhanam suṁdaraṁ ratidakṣaṁ ca tyaktvā nīcaṁ bhajedvadhūḥ
abandoning a husband endowed with virtue, well-born, greatly wealthy, handsome, and skilled in love, a wife may take to a lowly man.
Verse 13 (padma.1.52.13)
umānāradasaṁvādamākhyānaṁ viddhi bhūsura yena vidyāstriyāśceṣṭā vividhāḥ kṛtsnaśo dvija
Know, O earthly god, the tale of the dialogue between Uma and Narada, by which the various and complete conduct of women may be known, O twice-born.
Verse 14 (padma.1.52.14)
svabhāvānnārado vipra viśvajijñāsako muniḥ svāṁte vimṛśyātha gataḥ kailāsaṁ girimuttamam
By his very nature, the brahmin sage Narada, curious about the universe, having reflected within himself, went to the excellent mountain Kailasa,
Verse 15 (padma.1.52.15)
vṛṣaketusadākhyāna sapratiṣṭhe hime girau praṇipatya mahātmā vai papraccha pārvatīṁ muniḥ
where the bull-bannered one is ever established, on that snowy mountain; bowing down, the great-souled sage asked Parvati:
Verse 16 (padma.1.52.16)

Verse 18 (padma.1.52.18)

sthānaṁ nāsti kṣaṇaṁ nāsti nāsti prārthayitā naraḥ tena nārada nārīṇāṁ satītvamupajāyate
"Only because there is no place, no opportunity, and no man who solicits them — for that reason, O Narada, chastity arises among women."
Verse 21 (padma.1.52.21)

yathaivamattamātaṁgaṁ sṛṇimudgarayogataḥ svavaśaṁ kurute yaṁtā tathā strīṇāṁ prarakṣakaḥ
"Just as a mahout controls a rutting elephant with a goad and mallet, so should a woman's protector control her."
Verse 23 (padma.1.52.23)
