The Slaying of Devantaka, Durdharsha, and Durmukha

Verse 1 (padma.1.70.1)

व्यास उवाच। ततो देवांतको दैत्यो व्यनदत्समरं प्रति। रणं चकार धर्मेण संदष्टौष्ठपुटो बली

vyāsa uvāca. tato devāṁtako daityo vyanadatsamaraṁ prati. raṇaṁ cakāra dharmeṇa saṁdaṣṭauṣṭhapuṭo balī

Vyasa said: Then the daitya Devantaka roared toward the battle; his lips clenched in fury, the strong one made war upon Dharma, the god of death.

Verse 2 (padma.1.70.2)

स गत्वा चाब्रवीद्वाक्यं सर्वलोकविगर्हितं। न जानासि महद्धर्मं दुष्ट मोहाद्यथाक्रमम्

sa gatvā cābravīdvākyaṁ sarvalokavigarhitaṁ. na jānāsi mahaddharmaṁ duṣṭa mohādyathākramam

Going to him, he spoke words condemned by all the worlds: "You do not know the great Dharma rightly, O wicked one, blinded by delusion—"

Verse 3 (padma.1.70.3)

पापपुण्यप्रयोगेण निग्रहानुग्रहे प्रभुः। अहं च निर्मितो धात्रा करोमि तव शासनम्

pāpapuṇyaprayogeṇa nigrahānugrahe prabhuḥ. ahaṁ ca nirmito dhātrā karomi tava śāsanam

"—you consider yourself the lord of restraint and grace through the working of sin and merit. But I too was fashioned by the Creator — now I shall teach you a lesson."

Verse 4 (padma.1.70.4)

न जानासि यतो धर्मं कालमृत्यु पुरःसरः। न रोगो न जरा कालो न मृत्युर्न च किंकरः

na jānāsi yato dharmaṁ kālamṛtyu puraḥsaraḥ. na rogo na jarā kālo na mṛtyurna ca kiṁkaraḥ

"You do not truly know Dharma, since you go about preceded by Time and Death; without you there would be no disease, no old age, no Time, no death, and no servant of Death."

Verse 5 (padma.1.70.5)

धर्मात्प्रचलितः कर्मी कष्टं याति दिवानिशम्। उक्तं वसुं महावीर्यं यमं धर्मैकसाक्षिकम्

dharmātpracalitaḥ karmī kaṣṭaṁ yāti divāniśam. uktaṁ vasuṁ mahāvīryaṁ yamaṁ dharmaikasākṣikam

"The doer of deeds who strays from dharma suffers hardship day and night because of you." Thus he spoke to Yama — the excellent one, of great valor, the sole witness of dharma.

Verse 6 (padma.1.70.6)

स जघान त्रिभिर्बाणैः कालमृत्युसमप्रभैः। प्रचिच्छेद स धर्मात्मा ते त्वन्यैर्विशिखैस्त्रिभिः

sa jaghāna tribhirbāṇaiḥ kālamṛtyusamaprabhaiḥ. praciccheda sa dharmātmā te tvanyairviśikhaistribhiḥ

Devantaka struck him with three arrows, radiant as Time and Death. That righteous-souled Yama cut them down with three other shafts of his own.

Verse 7 (padma.1.70.7)

ततस्तूच्चैः शरैः प्राज्यैर्युगांतानलसप्रभैः। निजघान यमं संख्ये स चिच्छेद शरैः शरान्

tatastūccaiḥ śaraiḥ prājyairyugāṁtānalasaprabhaiḥ. nijaghāna yamaṁ saṁkhye sa ciccheda śaraiḥ śarān

Then, with great, abundant arrows blazing like the fire of cosmic dissolution, Devantaka struck Yama in battle; Yama cut down those arrows with shafts of his own.

Verse 8 (padma.1.70.8)

एतस्मिन्नंतरे क्रुद्धौ परस्परजयैषिणौ। जघ्नतुः समरेन्योन्यं महाबलपराक्रमौ

etasminnaṁtare kruddhau parasparajayaiṣiṇau. jaghnatuḥ samarenyonyaṁ mahābalaparākramau

Meanwhile, the two enraged ones, each desiring the other's defeat, both of great strength and valor, struck at each other in the fight.

Verse 9 (padma.1.70.9)

अहोरात्रं तयोर्युद्धमवर्त्तत सुदारुणम्। एतस्मिन्नन्तरे क्रुद्धः शक्त्या प्रशमनं रुषा

ahorātraṁ tayoryuddhamavarttata sudāruṇam. etasminnantare kruddhaḥ śaktyā praśamanaṁ ruṣā

Their extremely fierce battle continued day and night. Meanwhile, enraged, Devantaka struck Shamana, the pacifier, with a spear, in fury—

Verse 10 (padma.1.70.10)

बिभेद दैत्यशार्दूलो ह्यहंकारयुतो बली। तामेवाथ रुषा धर्मो गृहीत्वा शक्तिकां द्रुतं

bibheda daityaśārdūlo hyahaṁkārayuto balī. tāmevātha ruṣā dharmo gṛhītvā śaktikāṁ drutaṁ

—that tiger among daityas, strong and filled with pride, pierced him. Then Dharma, in anger, swiftly seized that same spear—

Verse 11 (padma.1.70.11)

निजघान तयैवामुंस्तनयोरंतरे भृशम्। स विह्वलित सर्वांगो मुखादागतशोणितः

nijaghāna tayaivāmuṁstanayoraṁtare bhṛśam. sa vihvalita sarvāṁgo mukhādāgataśoṇitaḥ

—and struck him back forcefully with that very spear, between the two breasts. Devantaka, his whole body reeling, blood coming from his mouth—

Verse 12 (padma.1.70.12)

ततः क्रुद्धो महातेजा धृत्वा दंडं सुदारुणम्। अमोघं पातयामास तस्य दैत्यस्य विग्रहे

tataḥ kruddho mahātejā dhṛtvā daṁḍaṁ sudāruṇam. amoghaṁ pātayāmāsa tasya daityasya vigrahe

—fell. Then, enraged, the greatly radiant Yama, seizing his terrible, unfailing rod, brought it down upon the body of that daitya.

Verse 13 (padma.1.70.13)

साश्वं रथं तथा सूतं योद्धारं शस्त्रसंचयम्। चकार भस्मसात्तं च शमनः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः

sāśvaṁ rathaṁ tathā sūtaṁ yoddhāraṁ śastrasaṁcayam. cakāra bhasmasāttaṁ ca śamanaḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ

Shamana, overcome with wrath, turned to ashes the chariot with its horses, the charioteer, the warrior, and the heap of weapons.

Verse 14 (padma.1.70.14)

पतिते च तथा दैत्ये दुर्धर्षो नाम दानवः। शमनं शूलहस्तस्तु प्रदुद्राव जिघांसया

patite ca tathā daitye durdharṣo nāma dānavaḥ. śamanaṁ śūlahastastu pradudrāva jighāṁsayā

When that daitya had fallen, a danava named Durdharsha, trident in hand, rushed at Shamana, desiring to kill him.

Verse 15 (padma.1.70.15)

शूलहस्तं समायांतं बडवानलसन्निभम्। आससाद रणे मृत्युः शक्तिहस्तोतिनिर्भयः

śūlahastaṁ samāyāṁtaṁ baḍavānalasannibham. āsasāda raṇe mṛtyuḥ śaktihastotinirbhayaḥ

As he came on, trident in hand, blazing like the submarine fire, Mrityu, utterly fearless, spear in hand, confronted him in battle.

Verse 16 (padma.1.70.16)

स च दृष्ट्वाऽसुरो मृत्युं शूलेनैव जघान ह। शक्तिं चैव ततो मृत्युः प्रचिक्षेप रणाजिरे

sa ca dṛṣṭvā'suro mṛtyuṁ śūlenaiva jaghāna ha. śaktiṁ caiva tato mṛtyuḥ pracikṣepa raṇājire

That asura, seeing Mrityu, struck him with his trident. Then Mrityu hurled his spear onto the battlefield.

Verse 17 (padma.1.70.17)

संदह्य सहसा शूलं वह्निकूटसमप्रभम्। दैत्यस्य हृदयं भित्वा गता सा च धरातलम्

saṁdahya sahasā śūlaṁ vahnikūṭasamaprabham. daityasya hṛdayaṁ bhitvā gatā sā ca dharātalam

Instantly burning up that trident, radiant as a mass of fire, the spear pierced through the daitya's heart and drove down into the ground.

Verse 18 (padma.1.70.18)

सरथः स पपातोर्व्यां शक्तिजर्जरविग्रहः। अथान्यो दुर्मुखो मृत्युं कृष्टचापो महाबलः

sarathaḥ sa papātorvyāṁ śaktijarjaravigrahaḥ. athānyo durmukho mṛtyuṁ kṛṣṭacāpo mahābalaḥ

His body shattered by the spear, Durdharsha fell to the ground together with his chariot. Then another, Durmukha, of great strength, came against Mrityu, bow drawn.

Verse 19 (padma.1.70.19)

खड्गचर्मधरः कालो रथ एव गतोभवत्। दृष्ट्वा तं विशिखैः प्राज्यैर्जघान स यमं रणे

khaḍgacarmadharaḥ kālo ratha eva gatobhavat. dṛṣṭvā taṁ viśikhaiḥ prājyairjaghāna sa yamaṁ raṇe

Durmukha, bearing sword and shield, dark and dreadful as Time itself, advanced upon his chariot; seeing Yama, he struck him in battle with abundant arrows.

Verse 20 (padma.1.70.20)

स चाप्लत्य रथाद्देवो ह्यसिना च सकुंडलम्। शिरश्चिच्छेद सहसा पातयित्वा च भूतले

sa cāplatya rathāddevo hyasinā ca sakuṁḍalam. śiraściccheda sahasā pātayitvā ca bhūtale

That god, leaping down from his chariot, instantly cut off Durmukha's head, earrings and all, with his sword, and cast it to the ground.

Verse 21 (padma.1.70.21)

हतशेषं बलं सर्वं प्रदुद्राव दिशो दश

hataśeṣaṁ balaṁ sarvaṁ pradudrāva diśo daśa

All that remained of the army fled in all ten directions.
