Bhishma said: I have heard of the worship of Surya, of Chandra, and of Bhauma as well; now tell me the worship of Budha, the son of the Moon.
Verse 2 (padma.1.82.2)
pulastya uvāca | tārāgarbhasamudbhūto budhaścaṁdrakumārakaḥ | saumyaḥ krūro graho jñeyaḥ śubhāśubhaprado nṛṇāṁ
Pulastya said: Budha, born from Tara's womb, is the son of the Moon; he is to be known as a planet both benign and malefic, bestowing good and ill fortune upon men.
Verse 3 (padma.1.82.3)
śarākāraṁ maṁḍalaṁ tu budhasya parikīrtitaṁ | harinmaṇisamairvarṇaiścūrṇaiḥ kuryāttu maṁḍalaṁ
The mandala for Budha is declared to be arrow-shaped; it should be made with powders of colors resembling the emerald.
Verse 4 (padma.1.82.4)
pūjayettatra gaṁdhādyaiḥ puṣpairdhūpaissuśobhanaiḥ | dānaṁ ca vidhivatkuryāddaśāriṣṭe ca gocare
There, one should worship with sandal-paste and the like, with flowers and lovely incense; gifts should be duly given during affliction of dasha or transit.
Verse 5 (padma.1.82.5)
karpūrāścaiva mudgāśca haridvastraṁ harinmaṇiḥ | suvarṇaṁ ca yathāśakti dadyādbodhanatuṣṭaye
Camphor, mung beans, yellow-green cloth, emerald, and gold, according to means, should be given for the satisfaction of Budha.
Verse 6 (padma.1.82.6)
somaputra mahāprājña vedavedāṁgapāraga | namaste grahamadhyastha prasanno bhava me sadā
'O son of the Moon, of great wisdom, versed in the Vedas and Vedangas, homage to you who dwell among the planets; be ever gracious to me.'
Verse 7 (padma.1.82.7)
iti stutvā mahārāja budhaṁ bhaktyā samāhitaḥ | prāpnuyānnikhilānkāmānsomasūnuprasādataḥ
Having thus praised Budha with devotion and a focused mind, O great king, one obtains all one's desires by the grace of the Moon's son.
Verse 8 (padma.1.82.8)
gurośca pūjanaṁ proktaṁ paṭṭasākāramaṁḍale | pītavarṇaiḥ suniṣpannaiścūrṇairājansuśobhanaiḥ
The worship of Guru is now declared: in a rectangular-strip mandala, O king, made with fine yellow powders—
Verse 9 (padma.1.82.9)
pītairgaṁdhayutaiḥ puṣpairvastrairhemnā ca pūjayet | daśāgocarayordauṣṭye dānaṁ dadyācca śaktitaḥ
—one should worship with yellow, fragrant flowers, cloth, and gold. In the ill-effects of dasha or transit, gifts should be given according to means.
Verse 10 (padma.1.82.10)
caṇakadvidalaṁ caiva pītavastraṁ suvarṇakaṁ | puṣyarāgaṁ tu viprāya dadyāccāriṣṭaśāṁtaye
Split chickpeas, yellow cloth, gold, and a topaz should be given to a Brahmin, for the pacifying of misfortune.
Verse 11 (padma.1.82.11)
bṛhaspate surācārya sarvaśāstraviśārada | dānenānena saṁtuṣṭo bhava saumyo mamādhunā
'O Brihaspati, teacher of the gods, learned in every scripture, be pleased by this gift, and gracious to me now.'
Verse 12 (padma.1.82.12)
evaṁ kṛte tu rājeṁdra svānukūlo bhavedguruḥ | sarvānkāmānavāpnoti naro gurusamarcanāt
Thus performed, O king of kings, Guru becomes favorably disposed; a man obtains all his desires through the worship of Guru.
Verse 13 (padma.1.82.13)
bhārgavasyāpi vakṣyāmi pūjanaṁ nṛpatedhunā | yatkṛtvā sarvakāmāptiḥ samyakpuṁsāṁ prajāyate
Now I shall also tell you, O king, the worship of Bhargava (Shukra, Venus), by which the attainment of all desires duly arises for men.
Verse 14 (padma.1.82.14)
paṁcakoṇaṁ samuddiṣṭaṁ maṁḍalaṁ bhārgavasya tu | cūrṇakaiḥ śvetavarṇaiśca vidhinā sudhiyā kṛtaṁ
The mandala for Bhargava is prescribed to be five-cornered, made with white-colored powders, by one of good understanding.
Verse 15 (padma.1.82.15)
śvetagaṁdhaiśca puṣpaiśca vastraiścāpi sitaistathā | pūjayedbhārgavaṁ bhaktyā naraḥ śraddhāsamanvitaḥ
With white sandal-paste, white flowers, and white cloth, a man endowed with faith should worship Bhargava with devotion.
Verse 16 (padma.1.82.16)
raupyaṁ ca dakṣiṇādānaṁ yathāśakti prakīrtitaṁ | daśādyariṣṭe cotpanne sitamaśvaṁ pradāpayet
Silver is declared to be given as the fee, according to means; and when the ill-effects of his dasha arise, a white horse should be given.
Verse 17 (padma.1.82.17)
taṁḍulāḥ śvetavastraṁ ca raupyaṁ caṁdanameva ca | karpūraṁ ca sugaṁdhāḍhyaṁ deyaṁ dānaṁ dvijātaye
Rice, white cloth, silver, sandalwood, and fragrant camphor should be given as gifts to a Brahmin.
Verse 18 (padma.1.82.18)
bhṛguputra mahābhāga dānavānāṁ purohita | dānenānena saṁtuṣṭo bhava sarvāsurārcita
'O son of Bhrigu, most fortunate, priest of the danavas, worshipped by all the demons, be pleased by this gift.'
Verse 19 (padma.1.82.19)
iti maṁtraṁ samuccārya dadyāddānaṁ yathoditaṁ | tasya tuṣṭo bhavatyāśu bhārgavaḥ kurunaṁdana
Having recited this mantra, one should give the gift as prescribed; O joy of the Kurus, Bhargava thereby swiftly becomes pleased.
Verse 20 (padma.1.82.20)
śanaiścarasya pūjārthaṁ maṁḍalaṁ ca narākṛti | kṛtvā cūrṇaiḥ kṛṣṇavarṇaiḥ pūjayettatra bhaktitaḥ
For the worship of Shanaishchara, one should make a mandala in human form, using black-colored powders, and worship there with devotion.
Verse 21 (padma.1.82.21)
kṛṣṇairgandhaiśca puṣpaiśca vastraiścāpi tathāvidhaiḥ | lohaṁ ca dakṣiṇādānaṁ piṇyākaṁ ca tilasya ca
With black sandal-paste, black flowers, and cloth of the same kind; iron should be given as the fee, and sesame-oil cake as well.
Verse 22 (padma.1.82.22)
dānaṁ śanaiścarāriṣṭe kṛṣṇāṁ gāṁ kṛṣṇavastrakaṁ | suvarṇaṁ ca yathāśakti dadyānnīlamaṇiṁ tathā
In the misfortunes wrought by Shanaishchara, a black cow and black cloth should be given; and, according to means, gold and a sapphire.
Verse 23 (padma.1.82.23)
sūryasūno mahābhāga chāyāputra mahābala | adhodṛṣṭe bhava śane prasanno'smātpradānataḥ
'O son of Surya, most fortunate, son of Chhaya, mighty one — O Shani, though your gaze falls low, be gracious to me through this gift.'
Verse 24 (padma.1.82.24)
evaṁ stutvā śaniṁ bhaktyā yaśca dadyāddvijātaye | svānukūlo bhavettasya śaniḥ pāpe ca gocare
Whoever, having thus praised Shani with devotion, gives this to a Brahmin — for him, Shani becomes favorable even during an inauspicious transit.
Verse 25 (padma.1.82.25)
rāhorvarṇādikaṁ sarvaṁ śanivanmaṁḍalaṁ tathā | sūryākāraṁ samuddiṣṭaṁ tatra pūjārkasūnuvat
For Rahu, all the colors are as for Shani; his mandala is likewise prescribed sun-shaped, and worshipped just as for Shani, the son of the Sun.
Verse 26 (padma.1.82.26)
gomedaṁ sarṣapāścaiva tilā māṣāśca kṛṣṇakāḥ | mahiṣī ca tathā cchāgo dānaṁ rāhoḥ prakīrtitam
Gomeda-gem, mustard seed, sesame, black gram, a buffalo-cow, and a goat — these are declared as gifts for Rahu.
Verse 27 (padma.1.82.27)
siṁhikāsuta daityeṁdra rāho caṁdrārkamardana | bhava tuṣṭo mahābhāga dānenānena suvrata
'O son of Simhika, lord of the demons, O Rahu, crusher of Moon and Sun — be pleased, O most fortunate, virtuous one, through this gift.'
Verse 28 (padma.1.82.28)
ketormaṁḍalakaṁ kuryāddhvajākṛtisuśobhanam | śanivatsakalaṁ jñeyaṁ pūjāvarṇādikaṁ nṛpa
One should make Ketu's mandala banner-shaped and lovely; everything else, O king — colors of worship and the rest — is the same as for Shani.
Verse 29 (padma.1.82.29)
saptadhānyaṁ samuddiṣṭaṁ sasvarṇaṁ ketudānakam | evaṁ kṛte svānukūlau bhavetāṁ ca nṛṇāṁ nṛpa
The gift for Ketu is prescribed to be seven kinds of grain together with gold. Thus performed, O king, both become favorable to men,
Verse 30 (padma.1.82.30)
pradadyātāṁ dhanaṁ putrānsukhaṁ saubhāgyameva ca | ākṛṣṇeti ravermaṁtra imaṁ devāstathā vidhoḥ
—and bestow wealth, sons, happiness, and good fortune. 'Akrishnena' is the mantra for Ravi; this same one, for the gods, and for Vidhu (the Moon)—
Verse 31 (padma.1.82.31)
agnirmūrdheti bhaumasya maṁtro japyerhaṇe tathā | udbudhyasvetīṁdusūnorbṛhaspate gurostathā
—'Agnir murdha' is the mantra for Bhauma, to be recited in his propitiation; 'Udbudhyasva' is that of the Moon's son (Budha); and 'Brihaspate' for Guru—
Verse 32 (padma.1.82.32)
annātparīti śukrasya śannodevīrayaṁ śaneḥ | kayā na iti rāhośca ketoḥ ketumiti smṛtaḥ
—'Annat pari' is that of Shukra; 'Shanno devir' is that of Shani; 'Kaya nash' is that of Rahu; and 'Ketum' is remembered as that of Ketu.
Verse 33 (padma.1.82.33)
ete maṁtrāssamuddiṣṭā grahaṇāṁ pūjane jape | evaṁ kṛte nṛpaśreṣṭhānukūlā akhilā grahāḥ
These are the mantras prescribed for the worship and recitation of the planets; when this is done, O best of kings, all the planets become favorable—
Verse 34 (padma.1.82.34)
bhavaṁti puṁsāṁ satataṁ yacchaṁti ca susaṁpadaḥ | etanmahārāja mayā samastaṁ tubhyaṁ samuddiṣṭamihakrameṇa
—and bestow good fortune upon men constantly. This, O great king, has been declared to you by me in its entirety, in due order.
Verse 35 (padma.1.82.35)
śrutvā naraḥ sarvaśrutārthasārametīśvarasyaiva ca sannidhānam | idaṁ pavitraṁ yaśaso nidhānamidaṁ pitṝṇāmativallabhaṁ syāt
Hearing this, a man attains the very essence of all that is taught, and the presence of the Lord himself; this is a pure treasury of fame, dear to the ancestors.
Verse 36 (padma.1.82.36)
idaṁ ca deveṣvamṛtāya kalpate puṇyāvahaṁ pātakināṁ ca puṁsām | iti paṭhati yaśasyaṁ yaḥ śṛṇotīha bhaktyā madhumuranakārerarcanaṁ vātha paśyet
This is as if for immortality among the gods, and brings merit even to sinful men. Whoever reads or hears this famed teaching with devotion is as if he had worshipped or beheld the slayer of Madhu and Mura (Vishnu).
Verse 37 (padma.1.82.37)
matimapi ca janānāṁ yo dadātīṁdraloke vidhiśivavibudhendraiḥ pūjyate kalpamekam | ya idaṁ śṛṇuyānnityamṛṣīṇāṁ caritaṁ śubham
Whoever imparts this understanding to others is worshipped in Indra's world by Brahma, Shiva, and the lord of the wise gods, for a full kalpa. Whoever constantly hears this auspicious conduct of the sages—
Verse 38 (padma.1.82.38)
vimuktassarvapāpebhyaḥ svargaloke mahīyate | tapaḥ kṛte praśaṁsaṁti tretāyāṁ jñānameva ca
—is freed from all sins and glorified in heaven. In the Krita age, austerity is praised; in Treta, knowledge;
Verse 39 (padma.1.82.39)
dvāpare yajñamityāhurdānamekaṁ kalau yuge | sarveṣāmeva dānānāmidamevaikamuttamam
—in Dvapara, they say it is sacrifice; and in Kali, giving alone. Of all forms of giving, this alone is supreme:
Verse 40 (padma.1.82.40)
abhayaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ nāsti dānamataḥ param | dānaṁ pradhānaṁ śūdrasya tvityāha bhagavānprabhuḥ
—the gift of fearlessness to all beings; there is no gift higher than this. The Blessed Lord himself has declared that giving is the foremost duty of the Shudra.
Verse 41 (padma.1.82.41)
dānena sarvakāmāptistasya saṁjāyate tapaḥ | puṇyaṁ pavitramāyuṣyaṁ sarvapāpavināśanam
Through giving, all desires are attained, and it becomes his very austerity; it is meritorious, purifying, life-giving, and destroys all sin.
Verse 42 (padma.1.82.42)
purāṇametatkathitaṁ tīrthaśrāddhānuvarṇanam | śṛṇoti yaḥ paṭhedvāpi śrīmānsaṁjāyate naraḥ
This Purana has been told, describing sacred fords and ancestral rites; whoever hears it, or recites it, becomes a man of great fortune,
Verse 43 (padma.1.82.43)
sarvapāpavinirmuktaḥ salakṣmīkaṁ hariṁ labhet | idaṁ mahārāja agādi tubhyaṁ puṇyaṁ mahāpātakanāśanaṁ ca
—and, freed from all sin, attains Hari together with Lakshmi. This, O great king, has been declared to you — this meritorious teaching, destroyer of even the gravest sins,
Verse 44 (padma.1.82.44)
brahmārkarudraiśca supūjitaṁ ca śrotavyametatpravadaṁti tajjñāḥ | sṛṣṭikhaṁḍamidaṁ rājanmayā tubhyaṁ prakīrtitam
—well honored by Brahma, Surya, and Rudra; those who know declare that this is to be listened to. This Srishti Khanda, O king, has been proclaimed by me to you.
Verse 45 (padma.1.82.45)
purāṇasyādibhūtaṁ ca navadhā sṛṣṭi pauṣkaram | dvijebhyaḥ śrāvayedvidvānyaśca vai śṛṇuyātpaṭhet | kalpakoṭiśataṁ sāgraṁ brahmaloke sa modate
This is the very origin of the Purana, describing the ninefold creation, belonging to Pushkara. Whatever wise man causes the twice-born to hear it, or himself hears or recites it, rejoices in the world of Brahma for more than a hundred million kalpas.
