Vijvala Returns to His Father

Chapter 99All chaptersChapter 101

Verse 1 (padma.2.100.1)

viṣṇuruvāca narmadāyāstaṭe ramye vaṭe tiṣṭhati vai pitā vijvalo'pi samāyātaḥ pitaraṁ praṇipatya saḥ

Vishnu said: On the lovely bank of the Narmada, beneath a banyan tree, the father was staying. Vijvala too arrived there, and, bowing down to his father,

Verse 2 (padma.2.100.2)

vāsudevābhidhānasya stotrasyāpi mahāmatiḥ samācaṣṭe sa dharmātmā mahimānaṁ pituḥ puraḥ

that wise and righteous one related before his father the greatness of the hymn named Vasudeva.

Verse 3 (padma.2.100.3)

yathā viṣṇuḥ samāgatya dadau tasmai varaṁ śubham tatsarvaṁ kathayāmāsa suprasannena cetasā

How Vishnu himself had come and granted him an auspicious boon — all of this he related, with a joyful heart.

Verse 4 (padma.2.100.4)

kuṁjalopi ca vṛttāṁtaṁ samākarṇya sa bhūpateḥ harṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭaḥ putramāliṁgya vijvalam

Kunjala too, hearing this account of the king, was filled with great joy, and embracing his son Vijvala —

Verse 5 (padma.2.100.5)

āha puṇyaṁ kṛtaṁ vatsa tvayā rājñe mahātmane upakāraṁ mahāpuṇyaṁ vāsudevasya kīrtanāt

said: 'My son, you have performed a meritorious deed for that great-souled king — through the chanting of Vasudeva's name, a great and holy benefit has been done.'

Verse 6 (padma.2.100.6)

evamābhāṣya taṁ putramāśīrbhirabhinaṁdya ca putraṁ devasamopetaṁ stutvā caiva punaḥ punaḥ

Having spoken thus to his son, greeting him with blessings, praising again and again that son who was now the equal of a god —

Verse 7 (padma.2.100.7)

sthitaḥ sarittaṭe ramye cyavanasyopapaśyataḥ etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ teṣāṁ vṛttaṁ mahātmanām

he remained there on that lovely riverbank, within sight of Chyavana. This, O king, is the entire account of those great souls that I have related to you.

Verse 8 (padma.2.100.8)

vaiṣṇavānāṁ mahārāja anyatkiṁ te vadāmyaham vena uvāca amṛtaṁ śaṁkhapātreṇa pānārthaṁ mama cārpitam

O great king, what more shall I say to you of those Vaishnavas? Vena said: 'It is as though nectar has been given to me, in a conch-vessel, to drink.'

Verse 9 (padma.2.100.9)

tasmātkasya na ca śraddhā pātuṁ martyasya bhūtale uttamaṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ jñānaṁ pānānāmiha sarvadā

Who, then, among mortals on this earth, would not have the faith to drink of it — this supreme Vaishnava knowledge is, among all drinks, ever the finest.

Verse 10 (padma.2.100.10)

tvayaivaṁ kathyamānasya pāne tṛptirna jāyate śrotuṁ hi devadeveśa mama śraddhā vivarddhate

Even as you narrate it thus, I find no satiety in drinking of it. O Lord of lords, my faith to hear it keeps growing all the more.

Verse 11 (padma.2.100.11)

kathayasva prasādānme kuṁjalasyāpi ceṣṭitam mahātmanā kimuktaṁ ca caturthaṁ tanayaṁ prati

By your grace, tell me also of Kunjala's further conduct — what did that great soul say to his fourth son?

Verse 12 (padma.2.100.12)

tattvaṁ suvistarādeva kṛpayā kathayasva me śrībhagavānuvāca śrūyatāmabhidhāsyāmi caritraṁ kuṁjalasya ca

That, in full detail, tell me out of your kindness. The Blessed Lord said: 'Listen, I shall relate the story of Kunjala,'

Verse 13 (padma.2.100.13)

bahuśreyaḥ samāyuktaṁ caritraṁ cyavanasya ca idaṁ puṇyaṁ naraśreṣṭha ākhyānaṁ pāpanāśanam

rich with many blessings — and the story of Chyavana as well. This holy narrative, O best of men, is a destroyer of sins.

Verse 14 (padma.2.100.14)

yaḥ śṛṇoti naro bhaktyā gosahasraphalaṁ labhet

Whatever man hears it with devotion obtains the fruit of the gift of a thousand cows.
