Kapinjala's Vision on Kailasa
Verse 1 (padma.2.101.1)
सूत उवाच । देवदेवो हृषीकेशस्त्वंगपुत्रं नृपोत्तमम् । समाचष्ट महाश्रेय आख्यानं पापनाशनम्
sūta uvāca devadevo hṛṣīkeśastvaṁgaputraṁ nṛpottamam samācaṣṭa mahāśreya ākhyānaṁ pāpanāśanam
Suta said: The God of gods, Hrishikesha, related to that best of kings, the son of Anga, a most beneficial account, a destroyer of sins.
Verse 2 (padma.2.101.2)
श्रूयतामभिधास्यामि चरित्रं श्रेयदायकम् । द्विजस्यापि च वृत्तांतं कुंजलस्य महात्मनः
śrūyatāmabhidhāsyāmi caritraṁ śreyadāyakam dvijasyāpi ca vṛttāṁtaṁ kuṁjalasya mahātmanaḥ
Listen, I shall relate a story that bestows well-being — the account of the great and virtuous brahmin Kunjala as well.
Verse 3 (padma.2.101.3)
विष्णुरुवाच । कुंजलश्चापि धर्मात्मा चतुर्थं पुत्रमेव च । समाहूय मुदायुक्त उवाचैनं कपिंजलम्
viṣṇuruvāca kuṁjalaścāpi dharmātmā caturthaṁ putrameva ca samāhūya mudāyukta uvācainaṁ kapiṁjalam
Vishnu said: The righteous Kunjala too summoned his fourth son, Kapinjala, and, filled with joy, said to him —
Verse 4 (padma.2.101.4)
किं नु पुत्र त्वया दृष्टमपूर्वं कथयस्व मे । भोजनार्थं तु यासि त्वमितः कस्मिन्सुतोत्तम
kiṁ nu putra tvayā dṛṣṭamapūrvaṁ kathayasva me bhojanārthaṁ tu yāsi tvamitaḥ kasminsutottama
'My son, tell me — what unprecedented thing have you seen? O best of sons, to what place do you go from here for your meal?'
Verse 5 (padma.2.101.5)
तदाचक्ष्व महाभाग यदि दृष्टं सुपुण्यदम् । कपिंजल उवाच । यच्च तात त्वया पृष्टमपूर्वं प्रवदाम्यहम्
tadācakṣva mahābhāga yadi dṛṣṭaṁ supuṇyadam kapiṁjala uvāca yacca tāta tvayā pṛṣṭamapūrvaṁ pravadāmyaham
'O fortunate one, if you have seen something that bestows great merit, tell me of it.' Kapinjala said: 'Father, what unprecedented thing you have asked me, that I shall tell.'
Verse 6 (padma.2.101.6)
यन्न दृष्टं श्रुतं केन कस्मान्नैव श्रुतं मया । तदिहैव प्रवक्ष्यामि श्रूयतामधुना पितः
yanna dṛṣṭaṁ śrutaṁ kena kasmānnaiva śrutaṁ mayā tadihaiva pravakṣyāmi śrūyatāmadhunā pitaḥ
'What has never been seen, never heard by anyone, and what I too have never before heard — that I shall relate here; father, listen now.'
Verse 7 (padma.2.101.7)
शृण्वंतु भ्रातरः सर्वे मातस्त्वं शृणु सांप्रतम् । कैलासः पर्वतश्रेष्ठो धवलश्चंद्र सन्निभः
śṛṇvaṁtu bhrātaraḥ sarve mātastvaṁ śṛṇu sāṁpratam kailāsaḥ parvataśreṣṭho dhavalaścaṁdra sannibhaḥ
'Let all my brothers listen, and you too, mother, listen now: Kailasa, foremost of mountains, white, resembling the moon —'
Verse 8 (padma.2.101.8)
नानाधातुसमाकीर्णो नानावृक्षोपशोभितः । गंगाजलैः शुभैः पुण्यैः क्षालितः सर्वतः पितः
nānādhātusamākīrṇo nānāvṛkṣopaśobhitaḥ gaṁgājalaiḥ śubhaiḥ puṇyaiḥ kṣālitaḥ sarvataḥ pitaḥ
'— covered with many kinds of minerals, adorned with many trees, washed on every side by the auspicious, holy waters of the Ganga, father.'
Verse 9 (padma.2.101.9)
नदीनां तु सहस्राणि दिव्यानि विविधानि च । यस्मात्तात प्रसूतानि जलानि विविधानि च
nadīnāṁ tu sahasrāṇi divyāni vividhāni ca yasmāttāta prasūtāni jalāni vividhāni ca
'From which, father, spring thousands of divine rivers of many kinds, and streams of water of many kinds,'
Verse 10 (padma.2.101.10)
तडागानि सहस्राणि सोदकानि महागिरौ । नद्यः संति विशालिन्यो हंससारससेविताः
taḍāgāni sahasrāṇi sodakāni mahāgirau nadyaḥ saṁti viśālinyo haṁsasārasasevitāḥ
'on that great mountain are thousands of lakes filled with water; there are vast rivers too, frequented by swans and cranes.'
Verse 11 (padma.2.101.11)
तस्मिञ्छिखरिणां श्रेष्ठे पुण्यदाः पापनाशनाः । वनानि विविधान्येव पुष्पितानि फलानि च
tasmiñchikhariṇāṁ śreṣṭhe puṇyadāḥ pāpanāśanāḥ vanāni vividhānyeva puṣpitāni phalāni ca
'On that best of peaks are various forests, meritorious and sin-destroying, rich with flowers and fruit,'
Verse 12 (padma.2.101.12)
नानावृक्षोपयुक्तानि हरितानि शुभानि च । किन्नराणां गणैर्युक्तश्चाप्सरोभिः समाकुलः
nānāvṛkṣopayuktāni haritāni śubhāni ca kinnarāṇāṁ gaṇairyuktaścāpsarobhiḥ samākulaḥ
'thick with many kinds of trees, green and beautiful, filled with hosts of Kinnaras and thronged with apsaras,'
Verse 13 (padma.2.101.13)
गंधर्वचारणैः सिद्धैर्देववृंदैः सुशोभितः । दिव्यवृक्षवनोपेतो दिव्यभावैः समाकुलः
gaṁdharvacāraṇaiḥ siddhairdevavṛṁdaiḥ suśobhitaḥ divyavṛkṣavanopeto divyabhāvaiḥ samākulaḥ
'adorned with gandharvas, charanas, siddhas, and hosts of gods, furnished with forests of divine trees, filled with divine feeling,'
Verse 14 (padma.2.101.14)
दिव्यगंधैः सुशोभाढ्यैर्नानारत्नसमन्वितः । शिलाभिः स्फटिकस्यापि शुक्लाभिस्तु सुशोभनः
divyagaṁdhaiḥ suśobhāḍhyairnānāratnasamanvitaḥ śilābhiḥ sphaṭikasyāpi śuklābhistu suśobhanaḥ
'rich with divine fragrances, endowed with many jewels, most beautiful with slabs of white crystal,'
Verse 15 (padma.2.101.15)
सूर्यतेजोमयो राजंस्तेजोभिस्तु समाकुलः । चंदनैश्चारुगंधैश्च बकुलैर्नीलपुष्पकैः
sūryatejomayo rājaṁstejobhistu samākulaḥ caṁdanaiścārugaṁdhaiśca bakulairnīlapuṣpakaiḥ
'O king, full of the brilliance of the sun, thronged with radiance, adorned with fragrant sandalwood, with bakula trees and blue flowers,'
Verse 16 (padma.2.101.16)
नानापुष्पमयैर्वृक्षैः सर्वत्र समलंकृतः । पक्षिणां सुनिनादैश्च दिव्यानां मधुरायते
nānāpuṣpamayairvṛkṣaiḥ sarvatra samalaṁkṛtaḥ pakṣiṇāṁ suninādaiśca divyānāṁ madhurāyate
'everywhere adorned with trees laden with flowers of every kind; sweet as if with music, from the melodious cries of divine birds;'
Verse 17 (padma.2.101.17)
षट्पदानां निनादैश्च वृक्षौघैर्मधुरायते । रुतैश्च कोकिलानां तु शोभते स वनो गिरिः
ṣaṭpadānāṁ ninādaiśca vṛkṣaughairmadhurāyate rutaiśca kokilānāṁ tu śobhate sa vano giriḥ
'sweet with the humming of bees among the multitudes of trees; that mountain-forest shines with the calls of the cuckoos.'
Verse 18 (padma.2.101.18)
गणकोटिसमाकीर्णं तत्रास्ति शिवमंदिरम् । अंशुभिर्धवलं पुण्यं पुण्यराशिशिलोच्चयम्
gaṇakoṭisamākīrṇaṁ tatrāsti śivamaṁdiram aṁśubhirdhavalaṁ puṇyaṁ puṇyarāśiśiloccayam
'There stands Shiva's temple, thronged with tens of millions of his hosts, white with its own radiance, holy, its rocks like a heap of merit itself,'
Verse 19 (padma.2.101.19)
सिंहैश्च गर्जमानैश्च सैरिभैः कुंजरैस्ततः । दिग्गजानां सुघोषैश्च शब्दितं च समंततः
siṁhaiśca garjamānaiśca sairibhaiḥ kuṁjaraistataḥ diggajānāṁ sughoṣaiśca śabditaṁ ca samaṁtataḥ
'resounding on every side with roaring lions, buffaloes, elephants, and the deep trumpeting of the elephants of the quarters,'
Verse 20 (padma.2.101.20)
नानामृगैः समाकीर्णं शाखामृगगणाकुलम् । मयूरकेकाघोषैश्च गुहासु च विनादितम्
nānāmṛgaiḥ samākīrṇaṁ śākhāmṛgagaṇākulam mayūrakekāghoṣaiśca guhāsu ca vināditam
'filled with various wild creatures, thronging with troops of monkeys, its caves resounding with the calls of peacocks,'
Verse 21 (padma.2.101.21)
कंदरैर्लेपनैः कूटैः सानुभिश्च विराजितम् । नानाप्रस्रवणोपेतमोषधीभिर्विराजितम्
kaṁdarairlepanaiḥ kūṭaiḥ sānubhiśca virājitam nānāprasravaṇopetamoṣadhībhirvirājitam
'resplendent with caverns, slopes and crests, radiant with many springs and healing herbs,'
Verse 22 (padma.2.101.22)
दिव्यं दिव्यगुणं पुण्यं पुण्यधाम समाकुलम् । सेवितं पुण्यलोकैश्च पुण्यराशिं महागिरिम्
divyaṁ divyaguṇaṁ puṇyaṁ puṇyadhāma samākulam sevitaṁ puṇyalokaiśca puṇyarāśiṁ mahāgirim
'divine, endowed with divine qualities, holy, filled with sacred abodes, served by holy beings — that great mountain, a mass of merit,'
Verse 23 (padma.2.101.23)
पुलिंदभिल्लकोलैश्च सेवितं पर्वतोत्तमम् । विकटैः शिखरैः कोटैरद्रिराजः प्रकाशते
puliṁdabhillakolaiśca sevitaṁ parvatottamam vikaṭaiḥ śikharaiḥ koṭairadrirājaḥ prakāśate
'served by Pulinda, Bhilla and Kola forest-folk — that best of mountains, that king of mountains, shines with its jagged peaks and crags,'
Verse 24 (padma.2.101.24)
अन्यैर्नानाविधैः पुण्यैः कौतुकैर्मंगलैः शुभैः । गंगोदकप्रवाहैश्च महाशब्दं प्रसुस्रुवे
anyairnānāvidhaiḥ puṇyaiḥ kautukairmaṁgalaiḥ śubhaiḥ gaṁgodakapravāhaiśca mahāśabdaṁ prasusruve
'and with other manifold blessed, wondrous and auspicious things; and with the streams of the Ganga's water resounding with a great roar.'
Verse 25 (padma.2.101.25)
शंकरस्य गृहं तत्र कैलासं गतवानहम् । तत्राश्चर्यं मया दृष्टं यन्न दृष्टं कदा श्रुतम्
śaṁkarasya gṛhaṁ tatra kailāsaṁ gatavānaham tatrāścaryaṁ mayā dṛṣṭaṁ yanna dṛṣṭaṁ kadā śrutam
'I went there, to Kailasa, the abode of Shankara. There I saw a wonder such as was never before seen, nor ever heard of.'
Verse 26 (padma.2.101.26)
श्रूयतामभिधास्यामि तात सर्वं मयोदितम् । शिखराद्गिरिराजस्य मेरोः पुण्यान्महोदयात्
śrūyatāmabhidhāsyāmi tāta sarvaṁ mayoditam śikharādgirirājasya meroḥ puṇyānmahodayāt
'Listen, father, I shall relate all of it: from the holy and glorious peak of Meru, king of mountains,'
Verse 27 (padma.2.101.27)
हिमक्षीरसुवर्णस्तु प्रवाहः पतते भुवि । गंगायाश्च महाभाग रंहसा घोषभूषितः
himakṣīrasuvarṇastu pravāhaḥ patate bhuvi gaṁgāyāśca mahābhāga raṁhasā ghoṣabhūṣitaḥ
'a stream of snow, milk and gold falls down to the earth, and, O blessed one, adorned with the roaring speed of the Ganga,'
Verse 28 (padma.2.101.28)
कैलासस्य शिरः प्राप्य तत्र विस्तरतां गतः । दशयोजनमानेन तत्र गंगा ह्रदो महान्
kailāsasya śiraḥ prāpya tatra vistaratāṁ gataḥ daśayojanamānena tatra gaṁgā hrado mahān
'reaching the summit of Kailasa, it spreads out wide; there, extending ten yojanas, is a great lake of the Ganga,'
Verse 29 (padma.2.101.29)
महातोयेन पुण्येन विमलेन विराजते । सर्वतोभद्रतां प्राप्तो महाहंसैः प्रशोभते
mahātoyena puṇyena vimalena virājate sarvatobhadratāṁ prāpto mahāhaṁsaiḥ praśobhate
'shining with pure, holy, abundant, and stainless water; auspicious on every side, and resplendent with great swans.'
Verse 30 (padma.2.101.30)
सामोच्चारेण पुण्येन दिव्येन मधुरेण च । हंसास्तत्र प्रकूजंति सरस्तेन विराजते
sāmoccāreṇa puṇyena divyena madhureṇa ca haṁsāstatra prakūjaṁti sarastena virājate
'There the swans call out with a holy, divine, sweet note like the chanting of Sama hymns; that lake shines with their sound.'
Verse 31 (padma.2.101.31)
तस्य तीरे शिलायां वै हिमकन्या महामते । आसीना मुक्तकेशांता रूपद्रविणशालिनी
tasya tīre śilāyāṁ vai himakanyā mahāmate āsīnā muktakeśāṁtā rūpadraviṇaśālinī
'On the bank of that lake, O wise father, upon a rock sat the daughter of Himavat, her hair loosened, endowed with beauty and grace,'
Verse 32 (padma.2.101.32)
दिव्यरूपसुसंपन्ना सगुणा दिव्यलक्षणा । दिव्यालंकारभूषा च तस्यास्तीरे विराजते
divyarūpasusaṁpannā saguṇā divyalakṣaṇā divyālaṁkārabhūṣā ca tasyāstīre virājate
'possessed of divine beauty, endowed with virtues, of divine marks, adorned with divine ornaments — she shone radiant on that bank.'
Verse 33 (padma.2.101.33)
न जाने गिरिराजस्य तनया वा महोदधेः । नो वास्ति ब्रह्मणः पत्नी सा वा स्वाहा भविष्यति
na jāne girirājasya tanayā vā mahodadheḥ no vāsti brahmaṇaḥ patnī sā vā svāhā bhaviṣyati
'I could not tell whether she was the daughter of the king of mountains, or of the great ocean, or whether she was Brahma's consort, or Svaha herself,'
Verse 34 (padma.2.101.34)
इंद्राणी वा महाभागा रोहिणी वा भविष्यति । ईदृशी रूपसंपत्तिर्युवतीनां न दृश्यते
iṁdrāṇī vā mahābhāgā rohiṇī vā bhaviṣyati īdṛśī rūpasaṁpattiryuvatīnāṁ na dṛśyate
'or the greatly fortunate Indrani, or Rohini — for such a wealth of beauty is never seen among young women.'
Verse 35 (padma.2.101.35)
अन्यासां च सुदिव्यानां नारीणां तात सर्वथा । यादृशं रूपसंभावं गुणशीलं प्रदृश्यते
anyāsāṁ ca sudivyānāṁ nārīṇāṁ tāta sarvathā yādṛśaṁ rūpasaṁbhāvaṁ guṇaśīlaṁ pradṛśyate
'Father, whatever beauty, virtue and character is seen in all other divinely lovely women —'
Verse 36 (padma.2.101.36)
अप्सरसां कदा नास्ति तादृशं रूपलक्षणम् । यादृशं तु मया दृष्टं तदंगं विश्वमोहनम्
apsarasāṁ kadā nāsti tādṛśaṁ rūpalakṣaṇam yādṛśaṁ tu mayā dṛṣṭaṁ tadaṁgaṁ viśvamohanam
'such a mark of beauty is never found even among the apsaras, as I saw in her form — a form that enchants the whole world.'
Verse 37 (padma.2.101.37)
शिलापदे समासीना दुःखेनापि समाकुला । रुदते सुस्वरैर्बाला अनेकैः स्वजनैर्विना
śilāpade samāsīnā duḥkhenāpi samākulā rudate susvarairbālā anekaiḥ svajanairvinā
'That young woman, seated upon the rock, overwhelmed with sorrow, without any of her own kin near her, was weeping in sweet tones.'
Verse 38 (padma.2.101.38)
अश्रूणि मुंचमाना सा मुक्ताभानि बहूनि च । निर्मलानि सरस्यत्र पतंत्येव महामते
aśrūṇi muṁcamānā sā muktābhāni bahūni ca nirmalāni sarasyatra pataṁtyeva mahāmate
'She was shedding many tears, pure and resembling pearls, O wise father, and they were falling into the lake there.'
Verse 39 (padma.2.101.39)
बिंदवो मौक्तिकाभास्ते निपतंति महोदके । तेभ्यो भवंति पद्मानि हृद्यानि सुरभीणि तु
biṁdavo mauktikābhāste nipataṁti mahodake tebhyo bhavaṁti padmāni hṛdyāni surabhīṇi tu
'Those pearl-like drops fell into that great water, and from them arose lotuses, delightful and fragrant.'
Verse 40 (padma.2.101.40)
पद्मानि जज्ञिरे तेभ्यो नेत्राश्रुभ्यो महामते । गंगांभसि तरंत्येव असंख्यातानि तानि तु
padmāni jajñire tebhyo netrāśrubhyo mahāmate gaṁgāṁbhasi taraṁtyeva asaṁkhyātāni tāni tu
'From those tears of her eyes, O wise father, lotuses are born, and they float, uncounted, upon the waters of the Ganga.'
Verse 41 (padma.2.101.41)
पतितानि सुहृद्यानि रंहसा यानि तानि तु । गंगाप्रवाहमध्ये तु हंसवृंदैः सुसेविते
patitāni suhṛdyāni raṁhasā yāni tāni tu gaṁgāpravāhamadhye tu haṁsavṛṁdaiḥ susevite
'Those lovely lotuses, falling there with such swiftness, in the midst of the Ganga's current thronged with flocks of swans —'
Verse 42 (padma.2.101.42)
भागीरथ्याः प्रवाहस्तु तस्मात्स्थानाद्विनिर्गतः । कैलासशिखरं प्राप्य रत्नाख्यं चारुकंदरम्
bhāgīrathyāḥ pravāhastu tasmātsthānādvinirgataḥ kailāsaśikharaṁ prāpya ratnākhyaṁ cārukaṁdaram
'from that very place the stream of the Bhagirathi flows forth, and reaching the peak of Kailasa, in a lovely cavern named Ratna,'
Verse 43 (padma.2.101.43)
वर्तते तोयपूर्णस्तु योजनद्वयविस्तृतः । हंसवृंदसमाकीर्णो जलपक्षि समाकुलः
vartate toyapūrṇastu yojanadvayavistṛtaḥ haṁsavṛṁdasamākīrṇo jalapakṣi samākulaḥ
'it remains there, full of water, two yojanas in extent, thronged with flocks of swans, filled with waterfowl.'
Verse 44 (padma.2.101.44)
नानावर्णविशेषाणि संति पद्मानि तत्र च । प्रवाहे निर्मले तात मुनिवृंदनिषेविते
nānāvarṇaviśeṣāṇi saṁti padmāni tatra ca pravāhe nirmale tāta munivṛṁdaniṣevite
'There, father, in that pure stream frequented by hosts of sages, are lotuses of various special colors,'
Verse 45 (padma.2.101.45)
अश्रुभ्यो यानि जातानि प्रभाते कमलानि तु । गंगोदकप्लुतान्येव सौरभाणि महांति च
aśrubhyo yāni jātāni prabhāte kamalāni tu gaṁgodakaplutānyeva saurabhāṇi mahāṁti ca
'those great, fragrant lotuses that were born of those tears at daybreak, steeped in the waters of the Ganga,'
Verse 46 (padma.2.101.46)
प्रतरंति प्रवाहे तु निर्मले जलपूरिते । मध्ये मध्ये सुहंसैश्च जलपक्षिनिनादिते
prataraṁti pravāhe tu nirmale jalapūrite madhye madhye suhaṁsaiśca jalapakṣininādite
'they float upon that pure, water-filled current, resounding here and there with the calls of fine swans and waterfowl.'
Verse 47 (padma.2.101.47)
सूत उवाच । रत्नाख्ये तु गिरौ तस्मिन्रत्नेश्वरमहेश्वरः । देवदैत्यसुपूज्योपि तिष्ठते तात सर्वदा
sūta uvāca ratnākhye tu girau tasminratneśvaramaheśvaraḥ devadaityasupūjyopi tiṣṭhate tāta sarvadā
Suta said: On that mountain called Ratna, Rateshvara Maheshvara — worshipped even by gods and demons — ever abides there, father.
Verse 48 (padma.2.101.48)
तत्र दृष्टो मया तात कश्चित्पुण्यमयो मुनिः । जटाभारसमाक्रांतो निर्वासा दंडधारकः
tatra dṛṣṭo mayā tāta kaścitpuṇyamayo muniḥ jaṭābhārasamākrāṁto nirvāsā daṁḍadhārakaḥ
'There I saw, father, a certain holy sage — weighed down with a mass of matted locks, unclothed, bearing a staff,'
Verse 49 (padma.2.101.49)
निराधारो निराहारस्तपसातीव दुर्बलः । कृशांगोऽप्यस्थिसंघातस्त्वचामात्रेण वेष्टितः
nirādhāro nirāhārastapasātīva durbalaḥ kṛśāṁgo'pyasthisaṁghātastvacāmātreṇa veṣṭitaḥ
'without support, without food, exceedingly frail from austerity, his body emaciated, a mere framework of bones wrapped only in skin,'
Verse 50 (padma.2.101.50)
भस्मोद्धूलितमात्राणि सर्वांगानि महात्मनः । शुष्कपत्राणि भक्षेत शीर्णानि पतितानि च
bhasmoddhūlitamātrāṇi sarvāṁgāni mahātmanaḥ śuṣkapatrāṇi bhakṣeta śīrṇāni patitāni ca
'all the limbs of that great soul merely smeared with ash; he would eat only dried, withered, fallen leaves.'
Verse 51 (padma.2.101.51)
शिवभक्तिसमासीनो दुराधारो महातपाः । अश्रुभ्यो यानि जातानि पद्मानि सुरभीणि च
śivabhaktisamāsīno durādhāro mahātapāḥ aśrubhyo yāni jātāni padmāni surabhīṇi ca
'Immersed in devotion to Shiva, given to austerity almost impossible to sustain, he would gather those fragrant lotuses born of her tears'
Verse 52 (padma.2.101.52)
गंगातोयात्समानीय देवदेवं प्रपूजयेत् । रत्नेश्वरं महाभागो गीतनृत्यविशारदः
gaṁgātoyātsamānīya devadevaṁ prapūjayet ratneśvaraṁ mahābhāgo gītanṛtyaviśāradaḥ
'from the water of the Ganga and worship with them the God of gods, Rateshvara — that fortunate one, skilled also in song and dance.'
Verse 53 (padma.2.101.53)
गायते नृत्यते तस्य द्वारस्थस्त्रिपुरद्विषः । मठमागत्य धर्मात्मा रोदते सुस्वरैरपि
gāyate nṛtyate tasya dvārasthastripuradviṣaḥ maṭhamāgatya dharmātmā rodate susvarairapi
'That righteous man sings and dances, standing at the door of the Slayer of Tripura; and, returning to his hermitage, he weeps too, in sweet tones.'
Verse 54 (padma.2.101.54)
एतद्दृष्टं मया तात अपूर्वं वदतांवर । कथयस्व प्रसादान्मे यदि त्वं वेत्सि कारणम्
etaddṛṣṭaṁ mayā tāta apūrvaṁ vadatāṁvara kathayasva prasādānme yadi tvaṁ vetsi kāraṇam
'This, father, best of speakers, is what I saw, an unprecedented sight. If you know the cause of it, tell me by your kindness.'
Verse 55 (padma.2.101.55)
सा का नारी महाभागा कस्मात्तात प्ररोदिति । कस्मात्स देवपुरुषो देवमर्चेन्महेश्वरम्
sā kā nārī mahābhāgā kasmāttāta praroditi kasmātsa devapuruṣo devamarcenmaheśvaram
'Who is that most fortunate woman, and why, father, does she weep? And why does that godlike man worship the great Lord?'
Verse 56 (padma.2.101.56)
तन्मे त्वं विस्तराद्ब्रूहि सर्वसंदेहकारणम् । एवमुक्तो महाप्राज्ञः कुंजलोपि सुतेन हि
tanme tvaṁ vistarādbrūhi sarvasaṁdehakāraṇam evamukto mahāprājñaḥ kuṁjalopi sutena hi
'Tell me that in full detail, whatever will resolve the whole of my doubt.' Thus questioned by his son Kapinjala, the greatly wise Kunjala too —
Verse 57 (padma.2.101.57)
कपिंजलेन प्रोवाच विस्तराच्छृण्वतो मुनेः
kapiṁjalena provāca vistarācchṛṇvato muneḥ
— began to speak in full detail to that sage, his listening son.
