uvāca dānavendraṁ taṁ sādhvasena samanvitā aṣṭāviñśatike prāpte dvāparākhye yuge tadā

'By my own destiny this was made known — my union with Nahusha was declared by the goddess and by Shiva only after due reflection.'
Verse 43 (padma.2.103.43)
evaṁ jñātvā śamaṁ gaccha tyaja bhrāntiṁ manaḥsthitām naiva śakto bhavāndaitya me manaścālituṁ dhruvam
'Knowing this, be at peace; abandon the delusion lodged in your mind. Demon, you are surely incapable of shaking my resolve.'
Verse 44 (padma.2.103.44)
'My heart is fixed firm in devotion to my one husband — who can shake it? O great demon, else I shall burn you to ash with a mighty curse — go from here.'
Verse 45 (padma.2.103.45)
evamākarṇya tadvākyaṁ huṇḍo vai dānavo balī manasā cintayāmāsa kathaṁ bhāryā bhavediyam
Hearing this word, the mighty demon Hunda began to ponder in his mind how she might yet become his wife.
Verse 46 (padma.2.103.46)
vicintya huṇḍo māyāvī antardhānaṁ samāgataḥ tato niṣkramya vegena tasmātsthānādvihāya tām anyasmindivase prāpte māyāṁ kṛtvā tamomayīm
Having thought this, the deceitful Hunda vanished from there. Then, having sped away from that place, leaving her behind, on another day he wrought a dark, deluding magic —
Verse 47 (padma.2.103.47)
divyaṁ māyāmayaṁ rūpaṁ kṛtvā nāryāstu dānavaḥ māyayā kanyakā rūpo babhūva mama nandana
— that demon assumed the divine, illusory form of a woman. By his magic, my son, he became the very shape of a maiden.
Verse 48 (padma.2.103.48)
sā kanyāpi varārohā māyārūpāgamattataḥ hāsyalīlā samāyuktā yatrāste bhavanandinī
That beautiful maiden-form, wrought by illusion, arrived there where the daughter of Shiva sat, given to playful laughter.
Verse 49 (padma.2.103.49)
uvāca vākyaṁ snigdheva aśokasundarīṁ prati kāsi kasyāsi subhage tiṣṭhasi tvaṁ tapovane
'She' spoke an affectionate word to Ashokasundari: 'Who are you, whose daughter are you, fair one? Why do you dwell in this forest of austerity?'
Verse 50 (padma.2.103.50)
kimarthaṁ kriyate bāle kāmaśoṣaṇakaṁ tapaḥ tanmamācakṣva subhage kinnimittaṁ suduṣkaram
'For what purpose, young one, do you perform this austerity that withers desire itself? Tell me, fair one, for what cause is this so difficult a penance?'
Verse 51 (padma.2.103.51)
tanniśamya śubhaṁ vākyaṁ dānavenāpi bhāṣitam māyārūpeṇa channena sābhilāṣeṇa satvaram
Hearing this fair and affectionate word, spoken by the demon in his disguised, illusory form, Ashokasundari swiftly —
Verse 52 (padma.2.103.52)
ātmasṛṣṭi suvṛttāntaṁ pravṛttaṁ tu yathā purā tapasaḥ kāraṇaṁ sarvaṁ samācaṣṭa suduḥkhitā
— related the whole account of her own origin, just as it had happened, and the whole cause of her austerity, all the while deeply sorrowful.
Verse 53 (padma.2.103.53)
upaplavaṁ tu tasyāpi dānavasya durātmanaḥ māyārūpaṁ na jānāti sauhṛdātkathitaṁ tayā
Not recognizing the illusion of that vile demon, out of trust and affection she told even the account of her own misfortune to that disguised one.
Verse 54 (padma.2.103.54)
"huṇḍa uvāca pativratāsi he devi sādhuvrataparāyaṇā sādhuśīlasamācārā sādhucārā mahāsatī
Hunda (in his disguise) said: 'O goddess, you are devoted to one husband, given to the vows of the virtuous, of good conduct, a great and chaste woman.'
Verse 55 (padma.2.103.55)
ahaṁ pativratā bhadre pativrataparāyaṇā tapaścarāmi subhage bharturarthe mahāsatī
'I too, fair one, am devoted to one husband, given wholly to that vow; I too, O great and chaste one, perform this austerity for my husband's sake.'
Verse 56 (padma.2.103.56)
mama bhartā hatastena huṁḍenāpi durātmanā tasya nāśāya vai ghoraṁ tapasyāmi mahattapaḥ
'My husband was slain by that very vile Hunda. It is for his destruction that I perform this terrible, great austerity.'
Verse 57 (padma.2.103.57)
ehi me svāśrame puṇye gaṁgātīre vasāmyaham anyairmanoharairvākyairuktā pratyayakārakaiḥ
'Come to my holy hermitage — I dwell on the bank of the Ganga.' With such other beguiling and convincing words —
Verse 58 (padma.2.103.58)
huṁḍena sakhibhāvena mohitā śivanaṁdinī samākṛṣṭā suvegena mahāmohena mohitā
— in the guise of a friend, Hunda beguiled Shiva's daughter. Bewildered by that great delusion, she was drawn along helplessly.
Verse 59 (padma.2.103.59)
ānītātmagṛhaṁ divyamanaupamyaṁ suśobhanam merostu śikhare putra vaiḍūryākhyaṁ purottamam
