Indumati's Dream and Shaunaka's Interpretation
Verse 1 (padma.2.104.1)
कुंजल उवाच । गते तस्मिन्महाभागे दत्तात्रेये महामुनौ । आजगाम महाराज आयुश्च स्वपुरं प्रति
kuṁjala uvāca gate tasminmahābhāge dattātreye mahāmunau ājagāma mahārāja āyuśca svapuraṁ prati
Kunjala said: When that blessed great sage Dattatreya had departed, O great king, Ayu too returned toward his own city.
Verse 2 (padma.2.104.2)
इंदुमत्या गृहं हृष्टः प्रविवेश श्रियान्वितम् । सर्वकामसमृद्धार्थमिंद्रस्य सदनोपमम्
iṁdumatyā gṛhaṁ hṛṣṭaḥ praviveśa śriyānvitam sarvakāmasamṛddhārthamiṁdrasya sadanopamam
Rejoicing, he entered the palace of Indumati, radiant with splendor, rich with the abundance of every desire, resembling the very abode of Indra.
Verse 3 (padma.2.104.3)
राज्यं चक्रे स मेधावी यथा स्वर्गे पुरंदरः । स्वर्भानुसुतया सार्द्धमिंदुमत्या द्विजोत्तम
rājyaṁ cakre sa medhāvī yathā svarge puraṁdaraḥ svarbhānusutayā sārddhamiṁdumatyā dvijottama
O best of the twice-born, that wise king ruled his realm together with Indumati, daughter of Svarbhanu, just as Purandara rules in heaven.
Verse 4 (padma.2.104.4)
सा च इंदुमती राज्ञी गर्भमाप फलाशनात् । दत्तात्रेयस्य वचनाद्दिव्यतेजः समन्वितम्
sā ca iṁdumatī rājñī garbhamāpa phalāśanāt dattātreyasya vacanāddivyatejaḥ samanvitam
That queen Indumati, having eaten the fruit obtained through Dattatreya's word, conceived, endowed with a divine radiance.
Verse 5 (padma.2.104.5)
इंदुमत्या महाभाग स्वप्नं दृष्टमनुत्तमम् । रात्रौ दिवान्वितं तात बहुमंगलदायकम्
iṁdumatyā mahābhāga svapnaṁ dṛṣṭamanuttamam rātrau divānvitaṁ tāta bahumaṁgaladāyakam
O blessed one, Indumati beheld an unparalleled dream, father, bright as day even by night, and bearing many an auspicious sign.
Verse 6 (padma.2.104.6)
गृहांतरे विशंतं च पुरुषं सूर्यसन्निभम् । मुक्तामालान्वितं विप्रं श्वेतवस्त्रेणशोभितम्
gṛhāṁtare viśaṁtaṁ ca puruṣaṁ sūryasannibham muktāmālānvitaṁ vipraṁ śvetavastreṇaśobhitam
She saw a brahmin man, radiant as the sun, adorned with a garland of pearls and clad in white garments, entering into her house.
Verse 7 (padma.2.104.7)
श्वेतपुष्पकृतामाला तस्य कंठे विराजते । सर्वाभरणशोभांगो दिव्यगंधानुलेपनः
śvetapuṣpakṛtāmālā tasya kaṁṭhe virājate sarvābharaṇaśobhāṁgo divyagaṁdhānulepanaḥ
About his neck shone a garland woven of white flowers; his limbs were adorned with every ornament, anointed with a divine fragrance.
Verse 8 (padma.2.104.8)
चतुर्भुजः शंखपाणिर्गदाचक्रासिधारकः । छत्रेण ध्रियमाणेन चंद्रबिंबानुकारिणा
caturbhujaḥ śaṁkhapāṇirgadācakrāsidhārakaḥ chatreṇa dhriyamāṇena caṁdrabiṁbānukāriṇā
He was four-armed, bearing conch, mace, discus and sword in his hands; a parasol, resembling the very orb of the moon, was held above him.
Verse 9 (padma.2.104.9)
शोभमानो महातेजा दिव्याभरणभूषितः । हारकंकणकेयूर नूपुराभ्यां विराजितः
śobhamāno mahātejā divyābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ hārakaṁkaṇakeyūra nūpurābhyāṁ virājitaḥ
Resplendent, of great splendor, adorned with divine ornaments, he shone with necklace, bracelets, armlets and anklets.
Verse 10 (padma.2.104.10)
चंद्रबिंबानुकाराभ्यां कुंडलाभ्यां विराजितः । एवंविधो महाप्राज्ञो नरः कश्चित्समागतः
caṁdrabiṁbānukārābhyāṁ kuṁḍalābhyāṁ virājitaḥ evaṁvidho mahāprājño naraḥ kaścitsamāgataḥ
He shone with earrings resembling the very orb of the moon. Some such man of great wisdom, in this form, came there.
Verse 11 (padma.2.104.11)
इंदुमतीं समाहूय स्नापिता पयसा तदा । शंखेन क्षीरपूर्णेन शशिवर्णेन भामिनी
iṁdumatīṁ samāhūya snāpitā payasā tadā śaṁkhena kṣīrapūrṇena śaśivarṇena bhāminī
Calling that lovely Indumati to him, he bathed her with a conch filled with moon-hued milk,
Verse 12 (padma.2.104.12)
रत्नकांचनबद्धेन संपूर्णेन पुनः पुनः । श्वेतं नागं सुरूपं च सहस्रशिरसं वरम्
ratnakāṁcanabaddhena saṁpūrṇena punaḥ punaḥ śvetaṁ nāgaṁ surūpaṁ ca sahasraśirasaṁ varam
a conch bound with jewels and gold, refilled again and again to its brim. Then a white, beautiful, thousand-headed serpent —
Verse 13 (padma.2.104.13)
महामणियुतं दीप्तं धामज्वालासमाकुलम् । क्षिप्तं तेन मुखप्रांते दत्तं मुक्ताफलं पुनः
mahāmaṇiyutaṁ dīptaṁ dhāmajvālāsamākulam kṣiptaṁ tena mukhaprāṁte dattaṁ muktāphalaṁ punaḥ
— adorned with great jewels, radiant, wreathed in a mass of flames — he placed near her face, and then offered her a pearl.
Verse 14 (padma.2.104.14)
कंठे तस्याः स देवेश इंदुमत्या महायशाः । पद्मं हस्ते ततो दत्वा स्वस्थानं प्रति जग्मिवान्
kaṁṭhe tasyāḥ sa deveśa iṁdumatyā mahāyaśāḥ padmaṁ haste tato datvā svasthānaṁ prati jagmivān
That God of gods, of great renown, placed it about Indumati's neck, and then, placing a lotus in her hand, returned to his own abode.
Verse 15 (padma.2.104.15)
एवंविधं महास्वप्नं तया दृष्टं सुतोत्तमम् । समाचष्ट महाभागा आयुं भूमिपतीश्वरम्
evaṁvidhaṁ mahāsvapnaṁ tayā dṛṣṭaṁ sutottamam samācaṣṭa mahābhāgā āyuṁ bhūmipatīśvaram
Such a great dream, foretokening an excellent son, she beheld; and that most blessed queen related it to Ayu, lord of the earth.
Verse 16 (padma.2.104.16)
समाकर्ण्य महाराजश्चिंतयामास वै पुनः । समाहूय गुरुं पश्चात्कथितं स्वप्नमुत्तमम्
samākarṇya mahārājaściṁtayāmāsa vai punaḥ samāhūya guruṁ paścātkathitaṁ svapnamuttamam
Hearing it, the great king fell to pondering once again. Then, summoning his guru, he related to him that excellent dream —
Verse 17 (padma.2.104.17)
शौनकं सुमहाभागं सर्वज्ञं ज्ञानिनां वरम् । राजोवाच । अद्य रात्रौ महाभाग मम पत्न्या द्विजोत्तम
śaunakaṁ sumahābhāgaṁ sarvajñaṁ jñānināṁ varam rājovāca adya rātrau mahābhāga mama patnyā dvijottama
— to Shaunaka, that blessed one, all-knowing, foremost among the wise. The king said: 'O blessed one, best of the twice-born, this very night, in my wife's —'
Verse 18 (padma.2.104.18)
विप्रो गेहं विशन्दृष्टः किमिदं स्वप्नकारणम् । शौनक उवाच । वरो दत्तस्तु ते पूर्वं दत्तात्रेयेण धीमता
vipro gehaṁ viśandṛṣṭaḥ kimidaṁ svapnakāraṇam śaunaka uvāca varo dattastu te pūrvaṁ dattātreyeṇa dhīmatā
'— house, a brahmin was seen entering; what is the meaning of this dream?' Shaunaka said: 'A boon was granted to you before by the wise Dattatreya —'
Verse 19 (padma.2.104.19)
आदिष्टं च फलं राज्ञां सुगुणं सुतहेतवे । तत्फलं किं कृतं राजन्कस्मै त्वया निवेदितम्
ādiṣṭaṁ ca phalaṁ rājñāṁ suguṇaṁ sutahetave tatphalaṁ kiṁ kṛtaṁ rājankasmai tvayā niveditam
'— and, for the sake of a son fitting for kings, of fine qualities, a fruit too was given. O king, what did you do with that fruit — to whom did you give it?'
Verse 20 (padma.2.104.20)
सुभार्यायै मया दत्तमिति राज्ञोदितं वचः । श्रुत्वोवाच महाप्राज्ञः शौनको द्विजसत्तमः
subhāryāyai mayā dattamiti rājñoditaṁ vacaḥ śrutvovāca mahāprājñaḥ śaunako dvijasattamaḥ
The king said: 'I gave it to my good wife.' Hearing this, that greatly wise and foremost brahmin, Shaunaka, said —
Verse 21 (padma.2.104.21)
दत्तात्रेयप्रसादेन तव गेहे सुतोत्तमः । वैष्णवांशेन संयुक्तो भविष्यति न संशयः
dattātreyaprasādena tava gehe sutottamaḥ vaiṣṇavāṁśena saṁyukto bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ
'By Dattatreya's grace, an excellent son shall be born in your house — endowed with a portion of Vishnu, there is no doubt of this.'
Verse 22 (padma.2.104.22)
स्वप्नस्य कारणं राजन्नेतत्ते कथितं मया । इंद्रोपेंद्र समः पुत्रो दिव्यवीर्यो भविष्यति
svapnasya kāraṇaṁ rājannetatte kathitaṁ mayā iṁdropeṁdra samaḥ putro divyavīryo bhaviṣyati
'This, O king, is the meaning of your dream, as I have told you. That son shall be equal to Indra and Upendra, of divine valor.'
Verse 23 (padma.2.104.23)
पुत्रस्ते सर्वधर्मात्मा सोमवंशस्य वर्द्धनः । धनुर्वेदे च वेदे च सगुणोसौ भविष्यति
putraste sarvadharmātmā somavaṁśasya varddhanaḥ dhanurvede ca vede ca saguṇosau bhaviṣyati
'Your son shall be entirely righteous, one who shall enlarge the lunar dynasty. He shall be accomplished both in the science of the bow and in the Veda.'
Verse 24 (padma.2.104.24)
एवमुक्त्वा स राजानं शौनको गतवान्गृहम् । हर्षेण महताविष्टो राजाभूत्प्रियया सह
evamuktvā sa rājānaṁ śaunako gatavāngṛham harṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭo rājābhūtpriyayā saha
Having thus spoken to the king, Shaunaka returned to his own home. The king too, filled with great joy, remained with his beloved wife.
