Bhumi Khanda · Chapter 19
Somasharma's Austerity, the Vision of Vishnu, and His Great Hymn of Praise
Verse 1 (padma.2.19.1)
sūta uvāca- somaśarmā mahāprājñaḥ sumanayā saha sattamaḥ kapilāsaṁgame puṇye revātīre supuṇyade
Suta said: Somasharma, the greatly wise, that worthy one, together with Sumana, at the meritorious confluence of the Kapila, on the greatly meritorious bank of the Reva—
Verse 2 (padma.2.19.2)
snātvā tatra sa medhāvī tarpayitvā surānpitṝn tapastepe suśāṁtātmā japannārāyaṇaṁ śivam
—bathing there, that wise one, having offered libations to the gods and ancestors, performed austerity, his soul most tranquil, chanting the auspicious name of Narayana.
Verse 3 (padma.2.19.3)
dvādaśākṣaramaṁtreṇa dhyānayukto mahāmanāḥ tasyaiva devadevasya vāsudevasya suvrataḥ
With the twelve-syllabled mantra, joined with meditation, that great-minded, good-vowed one meditated upon that very god of gods, Vasudeva.
Verse 4 (padma.2.19.4)
āsane śayane yāne svapne paśyati keśavam sadaiva niścalo bhūtvā kāmakrodhavivarjitaḥ
Seated, lying, traveling, or in dream, he beheld Keshava; ever unwavering, free of desire and anger.
Verse 5 (padma.2.19.5)
sā ca sādhvī mahābhāgā pativrataparāyaṇā sumanā kāṁtamevāpi śuśrūṣati taponvitam
And that virtuous, greatly fortunate lady, devoted wholly to her marriage vow, Sumana, served her husband too, joined as he was with austerity.
Verse 6 (padma.2.19.6)
dhyāyamānasya tasyāpi vighnaiḥ saṁdarśitaṁ bhayam sarpā viṣolbaṇāḥ kṛṣṇāstatra yāṁti mahātmanaḥ
To him too, as he meditated, fearsome obstacles were displayed; venomous black serpents came there to that great soul—
Verse 7 (padma.2.19.7)
pārśve te tapyamānasya tasya te somaśarmaṇaḥ siṁhavyāghragajā dṛṣṭā bhayamevaṁ pracakrire
—at the side of Somasharma as he performed his austerity; lions, tigers, and elephants were seen, and thus wrought fear.
Verse 8 (padma.2.19.8)
vetālā rākṣasā bhūtāḥ kūṣmāṁḍāḥ pretabhairavāḥ bhayaṁ vidarśayaṁtyete dāruṇaṁ prāṇanāśanam
Vetalas, rakshasas, bhutas, kushmandas, and terrifying pretas — these displayed dreadful, life-threatening terror.
Verse 9 (padma.2.19.9)
nānāvidhā mahābhīmāḥ siṁhāstatra samāgatāḥ daṁṣṭrākarālavaktrāśca jagarjuścātibhairavam
Manifold, most fearsome lions came there, their faces terrible with fangs, and roared most terrifyingly.
Verse 10 (padma.2.19.10)
viṣṇordhyānātsa dharmātmā na cacāla mahāmatiḥ mahāvighnaiḥ susaṁrūḍhaiścālito munipuṁgavaḥ
Yet that righteous, great-minded soul did not waver from his meditation on Vishnu; that bull among sages was never shaken, even by these mighty, ever-thickening obstacles.
Verse 11 (padma.2.19.11)
evaṁ na calate dhyānātsomaśarmā dvijottamaḥ jhaṁjhāvātaiśca śītena mahāvṛṣṭyā supīḍitaḥ
Thus Somasharma, best of brahmins, did not waver from his meditation; sorely afflicted by fierce winds, by cold, and by torrential rain—
Verse 12 (padma.2.19.12)
bhaṁbhārāvamahābhīmaḥ siṁhastatra samāgataḥ taṁ dṛṣṭvā bhayavitrastaḥ sasmāra nṛhariṁ dvijaḥ
—a most fearsome lion, roaring loudly, came there; seeing it, terrified, that brahmin called to mind Nrihari, Narasimha—
