Verse 1 (padma.2.20.1)

हरिरुवाच- तपसानेन पुण्येन सत्येनानेन ते द्विज । स्तोत्रेण पावनेनापि तुष्टोस्मि व्रियतां वरः

hariruvāca- tapasānena puṇyena satyenānena te dvija stotreṇa pāvanenāpi tuṣṭosmi vriyatāṁ varaḥ

Hari said: 'By this austerity, this merit, this truth of yours, O brahmin, and by this purifying hymn too, I am pleased; choose a boon.'

Verse 2 (padma.2.20.2)

वरं दद्मि महाभाग यत्ते मनसि वर्तते । यंयमिच्छसि कामं त्वं तंतं ते पूरयाम्यहम्

varaṁ dadmi mahābhāga yatte manasi vartate yaṁyamicchasi kāmaṁ tvaṁ taṁtaṁ te pūrayāmyaham

'I grant a boon, O greatly fortunate one, whatever it is that dwells in your mind; whatever desire you wish, that I shall fulfill for you.'

Verse 3 (padma.2.20.3)

सोमशर्मोवाच- प्रथमं देहि मे कृष्ण वरमेकं सुवाञ्छितम् । सुप्रसन्नेन मनसा यद्यस्ति सुदया मम

somaśarmovāca- prathamaṁ dehi me kṛṣṇa varamekaṁ suvāñchitam suprasannena manasā yadyasti sudayā mama

Somasharma said: 'First grant me, O Krishna, one well-desired boon, with a most gracious mind, if you have true compassion for me—'

Verse 4 (padma.2.20.4)

जन्मजन्मांतरं प्राप्य तव भक्तिं करोम्यहम् । दर्शयस्व परं स्थानमचलं मोक्षदायकम्

janmajanmāṁtaraṁ prāpya tava bhaktiṁ karomyaham darśayasva paraṁ sthānamacalaṁ mokṣadāyakam

—'that in birth after birth I may perform devotion to you. Show me that supreme, unshakeable station which bestows liberation.'

Verse 5 (padma.2.20.5)

स्ववंशतारकं पुत्रं दिव्यलक्षणसंयुतम् । विष्णुभक्तिपरं नित्यं मम वंशप्रधारकम्

svavaṁśatārakaṁ putraṁ divyalakṣaṇasaṁyutam viṣṇubhaktiparaṁ nityaṁ mama vaṁśapradhārakam

'A son who delivers his own lineage, endowed with divine marks, ever devoted to Vishnu-bhakti, the true sustainer of my line—'

Verse 6 (padma.2.20.6)

सर्वज्ञं सर्वदं दांतं तपस्तेजः समन्वितम् । देवब्राह्मणलोकानां पालकं पूजकं सदा

sarvajñaṁ sarvadaṁ dāṁtaṁ tapastejaḥ samanvitam devabrāhmaṇalokānāṁ pālakaṁ pūjakaṁ sadā

—'all-knowing, all-giving, self-controlled, joined with the splendor of austerity, ever the protector and worshipper of gods, brahmins, and all beings—'

Verse 7 (padma.2.20.7)

देवमित्रं पुण्यभावं दातारं ज्ञानपंडितम् । देहि मे ईदृशं पुत्रं दारिद्रं हर केशव

devamitraṁ puṇyabhāvaṁ dātāraṁ jñānapaṁḍitam dehi me īdṛśaṁ putraṁ dāridraṁ hara keśava

—'friend of the gods, of meritorious disposition, a giver, learned in knowledge — grant me such a son, and take away my poverty, O Keshava.'

Verse 8 (padma.2.20.8)

भवत्वेवं न संदेहो वरमेनं वृणोम्यहम् । हरिरुवाच- एवमस्तु द्विजश्रेष्ठ भविष्यति न संशयः

bhavatvevaṁ na saṁdeho varamenaṁ vṛṇomyaham hariruvāca- evamastu dvijaśreṣṭha bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ

'Let it be so, without doubt; this boon I choose.' Hari said: 'So be it, O best of brahmins; it shall come to pass, no doubt of it.'

Verse 9 (padma.2.20.9)

मत्प्रसादात्सुपुत्रस्तु तव वंश प्रतारकः । भोक्ष्यसि त्वं वरान्भोगान्दिव्यांश्च मानुषानिह

matprasādātsuputrastu tava vaṁśa pratārakaḥ bhokṣyasi tvaṁ varānbhogāndivyāṁśca mānuṣāniha

'By my grace, a good son, the deliverer of your line, shall be born; you shall enjoy fine pleasures, both divine and human, here.'

Verse 10 (padma.2.20.10)

समालोक्य परं सौख्यं पुत्रसंभवजं शुभम् । यावज्जीवसि विप्र त्वं तावद्दुःखं न पश्यसि

samālokya paraṁ saukhyaṁ putrasaṁbhavajaṁ śubham yāvajjīvasi vipra tvaṁ tāvadduḥkhaṁ na paśyasi

'Beholding the supreme, auspicious happiness born from the birth of your son, as long as you live, O brahmin, you shall see no sorrow.'

Verse 11 (padma.2.20.11)

दाता भोक्ता गुणग्राही भविष्यसि न संशयः । सुतीर्थे मरणं चापि यास्यसि त्वं परां गतिम्

dātā bhoktā guṇagrāhī bhaviṣyasi na saṁśayaḥ sutīrthe maraṇaṁ cāpi yāsyasi tvaṁ parāṁ gatim

'You shall become a giver, an enjoyer, a discerner of virtue, no doubt of it; your death too shall come at a holy tirtha, and you shall go to the supreme state.'

Verse 12 (padma.2.20.12)

एवं वरं हरिर्दत्त्वा सप्रियाय द्विजाय सः । अंतर्धानं गतो देवः स्वप्नवत्परिदृश्यते

evaṁ varaṁ harirdattvā sapriyāya dvijāya saḥ aṁtardhānaṁ gato devaḥ svapnavatparidṛśyate

Having thus granted the boon to that brahmin together with his beloved wife, that god vanished from sight, appearing as if in a dream.

Verse 13 (padma.2.20.13)

तदा सुमनया युक्तः सोमशर्मा द्विजोत्तमः । सुतीर्थे पावने तस्मिन्रेवातीरे सुपुण्यदे

tadā sumanayā yuktaḥ somaśarmā dvijottamaḥ sutīrthe pāvane tasminrevātīre supuṇyade

Then Somasharma, best of brahmins, together with Sumana, at that holy, purifying tirtha on the greatly meritorious bank of the Reva—

Verse 14 (padma.2.20.14)

अमरकंटके विप्रो दानं पुण्यं करोति सः । गते बहुतरे काले तस्य वै सोमशर्मणः

amarakaṁṭake vipro dānaṁ puṇyaṁ karoti saḥ gate bahutare kāle tasya vai somaśarmaṇaḥ

—that brahmin performed meritorious gifts at Amarakantaka. As a long time passed for that very Somasharma—

Verse 15 (padma.2.20.15)

कपिलारेवयोः संगे स्नानं कृत्वा स निर्गतः । दृष्टवान्पुरतो विप्रः श्वेतमेकं हि कुंजरम्

kapilārevayoḥ saṁge snānaṁ kṛtvā sa nirgataḥ dṛṣṭavānpurato vipraḥ śvetamekaṁ hi kuṁjaram

—having bathed at the confluence of the Kapila and Reva, he went out, and that brahmin saw before him a single white elephant—

Verse 16 (padma.2.20.16)

सुप्रभं सुंदरं दिव्यं सुमदं चारुलक्षणम् । नानाभरणशोभांगं बहुलक्ष्म्या समन्वितम्

suprabhaṁ suṁdaraṁ divyaṁ sumadaṁ cārulakṣaṇam nānābharaṇaśobhāṁgaṁ bahulakṣmyā samanvitam

—of fine splendor, beautiful, divine, in fine rut, of lovely marks, its limbs resplendent with manifold ornaments, joined with abundant majesty—

Verse 17 (padma.2.20.17)

सिंदूरैः कुंकुमैस्तस्य कुंभस्थले विराजिते । कर्णनीलोत्पलयुतं पताकादंडसंयुतम्

siṁdūraiḥ kuṁkumaistasya kuṁbhasthale virājite karṇanīlotpalayutaṁ patākādaṁḍasaṁyutam

—its temples adorned resplendent with vermilion and saffron, its ears joined with blue lotuses, bearing a flag and staff—

Verse 18 (padma.2.20.18)

नागोपरिस्थितो दिव्यः पुरुषो दृढसुप्रभः । दिव्यलक्षणसंपन्नः सर्वाभरणभूषितः

nāgoparisthito divyaḥ puruṣo dṛḍhasuprabhaḥ divyalakṣaṇasaṁpannaḥ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ

—and, seated upon that elephant, a divine person of firm, excellent splendor, endowed with divine marks, adorned with every ornament—

Verse 19 (padma.2.20.19)

दिव्यमाल्यांबरधरो दिव्यगंधानुलेपनः । सुसौम्यं सोमवत्पूर्णच्छत्रचामरसंयुतम्

divyamālyāṁbaradharo divyagaṁdhānulepanaḥ susaumyaṁ somavatpūrṇacchatracāmarasaṁyutam

—wearing divine garlands and garments, anointed with divine fragrance, of gentle mien like the full moon, joined with parasol and chowries—

Verse 20 (padma.2.20.20)

नागारूढं प्रयांतं तं पुनः पश्यति सत्तमः । सिद्धचारणगंधर्वैः स्तूयमानं सुमंगलम्

nāgārūḍhaṁ prayāṁtaṁ taṁ punaḥ paśyati sattamaḥ siddhacāraṇagaṁdharvaiḥ stūyamānaṁ sumaṁgalam

—mounted upon that elephant, proceeding onward; that worthy one saw him again, most auspicious, praised by siddhas, charanas, and gandharvas.

Verse 21 (padma.2.20.21)

सगजं सुंदरं दृष्ट्वा पुरुषं दिव्यलक्षणम् । व्यतर्कयत्सोमशर्मा विस्मयाविष्टमानसः

sagajaṁ suṁdaraṁ dṛṣṭvā puruṣaṁ divyalakṣaṇam vyatarkayatsomaśarmā vismayāviṣṭamānasaḥ

Seeing that beautiful person of divine marks upon the elephant, Somasharma, his mind overcome with wonder, pondered—

Verse 22 (padma.2.20.22)

कोऽयं प्रयाति दिव्यांगः पंथानं प्राप्य सुव्रतः । एवं चिंतयतस्तस्य यावद्गृहं समाप्तवान्

ko'yaṁ prayāti divyāṁgaḥ paṁthānaṁ prāpya suvrataḥ evaṁ ciṁtayatastasya yāvadgṛhaṁ samāptavān

—'Who is this divine-limbed, good-vowed one going along this very road?' As he pondered thus, he reached home—

Verse 23 (padma.2.20.23)

प्रविशंतं गृहद्वारं देवरूपं मनोहरम् । हर्षेण महताविष्टः सोमशर्मा द्विजोत्तमः

praviśaṁtaṁ gṛhadvāraṁ devarūpaṁ manoharam harṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭaḥ somaśarmā dvijottamaḥ

—and saw that lovely, godlike form entering the door of his own house; filled with great joy, Somasharma, best of brahmins—

Verse 24 (padma.2.20.24)

स्वगृहं प्रति धर्मात्मा त्वरमाणः प्रयाति च । गृहद्वारं गतो यावत्तावत्तं तु न पश्यति

svagṛhaṁ prati dharmātmā tvaramāṇaḥ prayāti ca gṛhadvāraṁ gato yāvattāvattaṁ tu na paśyati

—that righteous soul hastened toward his own home; but when he reached the door of his house, he no longer saw him at all.

Verse 25 (padma.2.20.25)

पतितान्येव पुष्पाणि सौहृद्यानि महामतिः । दिव्यानि वासयुक्तानि प्रांगणे द्विजसत्तमः

patitānyeva puṣpāṇi sauhṛdyāni mahāmatiḥ divyāni vāsayuktāni prāṁgaṇe dvijasattamaḥ

That great-minded, worthy brahmin found only fallen flowers, sweet-scented, divine, fragrant, in the courtyard—

Verse 26 (padma.2.20.26)

चंदनैः कुंकुमैः पुण्यैः सुगंधैस्तु विलेपितम् । स्वकीयं प्रांगणे दृष्ट्वा दूर्वाक्षतसमन्वितम्

caṁdanaiḥ kuṁkumaiḥ puṇyaiḥ sugaṁdhaistu vilepitam svakīyaṁ prāṁgaṇe dṛṣṭvā dūrvākṣatasamanvitam

—anointed with sandal-paste and saffron, sweet-smelling and meritorious; seeing his own courtyard, joined with durva grass and unbroken rice grains—

Verse 27 (padma.2.20.27)

स एवं विस्मयाविष्टश्चिंतयानः पुनः पुनः । ददर्श सुमनां प्राज्ञो दिव्यमंगलसंपदम्

sa evaṁ vismayāviṣṭaściṁtayānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ dadarśa sumanāṁ prājño divyamaṁgalasaṁpadam

—overcome with wonder thus, pondering again and again, that wise one beheld Sumana, adorned with divine, auspicious splendor.

Verse 28 (padma.2.20.28)

सोमशर्मोवाच- केन दत्तानि दिव्यानि एतान्याभरणानि च । शृंगारंरूपसौभाग्यं वस्त्रालंकारभूषणम्

somaśarmovāca- kena dattāni divyāni etānyābharaṇāni ca śṛṁgāraṁrūpasaubhāgyaṁ vastrālaṁkārabhūṣaṇam

Somasharma said: 'By whom were these divine ornaments given to you — this adornment, this beauty and good fortune, these garments and jewels?'

Verse 29 (padma.2.20.29)

तन्मे त्वं कारणं भद्रे कथयस्वाविशंकिता । एवं संभाष्यतां भार्यां विरराम द्विजोत्तमः

tanme tvaṁ kāraṇaṁ bhadre kathayasvāviśaṁkitā evaṁ saṁbhāṣyatāṁ bhāryāṁ virarāma dvijottamaḥ

'Tell me the reason for this, O gracious one, without any hesitation.' Having thus spoken to his wife, that best of brahmins fell silent.

Verse 30 (padma.2.20.30)

सुमनोवाच- शृणु कांत समायातः कश्चिद्देववरोत्तमः । श्वेतनागसमारूढो दिव्याभरणभूषितः

sumanovāca- śṛṇu kāṁta samāyātaḥ kaściddevavarottamaḥ śvetanāgasamārūḍho divyābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ

Sumana said: 'Listen, my dear — a certain excellent, foremost god came here, mounted upon a white elephant, adorned with divine ornaments—'

Verse 31 (padma.2.20.31)

दिव्यगंधानुलिप्तांगो दिव्याश्चर्यसमन्वितः । न जाने को हि देवोसौ विप्रगंधर्वसेवितः

divyagaṁdhānuliptāṁgo divyāścaryasamanvitaḥ na jāne ko hi devosau vipragaṁdharvasevitaḥ

—'his limbs anointed with divine fragrance, joined with divine wonders. I do not know which god he truly was, attended by brahmins and gandharvas—'

Verse 32 (padma.2.20.32)

स्तूयमानः समायातो देवगंधर्वचारणैः । योषितः पुण्यरूपाढ्या रूपशृंगारसंयुताः

stūyamānaḥ samāyāto devagaṁdharvacāraṇaiḥ yoṣitaḥ puṇyarūpāḍhyā rūpaśṛṁgārasaṁyutāḥ

—'praised as he came by gods, gandharvas, and charanas; and women, rich with meritorious beauty, joined with loveliness and adornment—'

Verse 33 (padma.2.20.33)

सर्वाभरणशोभाढ्याः सर्वाः पूर्णमनोरथाः । ताभिः सह समक्षं मे पुरुषेण महात्मना

sarvābharaṇaśobhāḍhyāḥ sarvāḥ pūrṇamanorathāḥ tābhiḥ saha samakṣaṁ me puruṣeṇa mahātmanā

—'all resplendent with every ornament, all of fulfilled desire — together with them, in my very presence, that great-souled person—'

Verse 34 (padma.2.20.34)

चतुष्कं पूरितं रत्नैः सर्वशोभासमन्वितम् । तत्राहमासने पुण्ये स्थापिता ब्राह्मणैः किल

catuṣkaṁ pūritaṁ ratnaiḥ sarvaśobhāsamanvitam tatrāhamāsane puṇye sthāpitā brāhmaṇaiḥ kila

—'a courtyard filled with jewels, joined with every splendor. There I was set upon a blessed seat by brahmins indeed—'

Verse 35 (padma.2.20.35)

वस्त्रालंकारभूषां मे ददुस्ते सर्व एव हि । वेदमंगलगीतैस्तु शास्त्रगीतैश्च पुण्यदैः

vastrālaṁkārabhūṣāṁ me daduste sarva eva hi vedamaṁgalagītaistu śāstragītaiśca puṇyadaiḥ

—'garments, ornaments, and jewels were all given to me by them, with Vedic and auspicious songs, and with meritorious hymns from the scriptures—'

Verse 36 (padma.2.20.36)

अभिषिक्तास्मि तैः सर्वैरंतर्धानं पुनर्गताः । मामेवं परितः सर्वे पुनरूचुर्द्विजोत्तम

abhiṣiktāsmi taiḥ sarvairaṁtardhānaṁ punargatāḥ māmevaṁ paritaḥ sarve punarūcurdvijottama

—'I was consecrated by all of them, and then they vanished from sight. Before that, all of them, surrounding me, said this, O best of brahmins:'

Verse 37 (padma.2.20.37)

तव गेहं वयं सर्वे वसिष्यामः सदैव हि । शुचिर्भव सुकल्याणि भर्त्रा सार्द्धं सदैव हि

tava gehaṁ vayaṁ sarve vasiṣyāmaḥ sadaiva hi śucirbhava sukalyāṇi bhartrā sārddhaṁ sadaiva hi

'"In your house we shall all dwell forever; be pure, O most auspicious one, together with your husband always."'

Verse 38 (padma.2.20.38)

एवमुक्त्वा गताः सर्वे एवं दृष्टं मयैव हि । तया यत्कथितं वृत्तं समाकर्ण्य महामतिः

evamuktvā gatāḥ sarve evaṁ dṛṣṭaṁ mayaiva hi tayā yatkathitaṁ vṛttaṁ samākarṇya mahāmatiḥ

Having spoken thus, all of them departed; this indeed I myself have seen.' Hearing this account told by her, that great-minded one—

Verse 39 (padma.2.20.39)

पुनश्चिंतां प्रपन्नोऽसौ किमिदं देवनिर्मितम् । विचिन्तयित्वाथ तदा सोमशर्मा महामतिः

punaściṁtāṁ prapanno'sau kimidaṁ devanirmitam vicintayitvātha tadā somaśarmā mahāmatiḥ

—fell once more into thought: 'What is this, wrought by some god?' Having thus deliberated, Somasharma, that great-minded one—

Verse 40 (padma.2.20.40)

ब्रह्मकर्मणि संयुक्तः साधर्म्यं धर्ममुत्तमम् । तस्माद्गर्भं महाभागा दधार व्रतशालिनी

brahmakarmaṇi saṁyuktaḥ sādharmyaṁ dharmamuttamam tasmādgarbhaṁ mahābhāgā dadhāra vrataśālinī

—continued joined with the practice of Brahman, in supreme dharma; from that, that greatly fortunate, vow-observant lady conceived.

Verse 41 (padma.2.20.41)

तेन गर्भेण सा देवी अधिकं शुशुभे तदा । संदीप्तपुत्रसंयुक्त तेजोज्वालासमन्विता

tena garbheṇa sā devī adhikaṁ śuśubhe tadā saṁdīptaputrasaṁyukta tejojvālāsamanvitā

With that pregnancy, that goddess-like woman shone forth ever more, joined with a radiant son, filled with blazing splendor.

Verse 42 (padma.2.20.42)

सा हि जज्ञे च तपसा तनयं देवसन्निभम् । अंतरिक्षे ततो नेदुर्देवदुंदुभयस्तदा

sā hi jajñe ca tapasā tanayaṁ devasannibham aṁtarikṣe tato nedurdevaduṁdubhayastadā

She indeed gave birth, through that austerity, to a son resembling a god; then the divine drums resounded in the sky.

Verse 43 (padma.2.20.43)

शंखान्दध्मुर्महादेवा गंधर्वा ललितं जगुः । अप्सरसस्तथा सर्वा ननृतुस्तास्तदा किल

śaṁkhāndadhmurmahādevā gaṁdharvā lalitaṁ jaguḥ apsarasastathā sarvā nanṛtustāstadā kila

The great gods blew conches; gandharvas sang sweetly; and all the apsarases danced then, indeed.

Verse 44 (padma.2.20.44)

अथ ब्रह्मासुरैः सार्द्धं समायातो द्विजोत्तमः । चकार नाम तस्यैव सुव्रतेति समाहितः

atha brahmāsuraiḥ sārddhaṁ samāyāto dvijottamaḥ cakāra nāma tasyaiva suvrateti samāhitaḥ

Then Brahma, together with the good asuras, came, that best of brahmins; and with due care he gave that son the name Suvrata.

Verse 45 (padma.2.20.45)

नाम कृत्वा ततो देवा जग्मुः सर्वे महौजसः । गतेषु तेषु देवेषु सोमशर्मासु तस्य च

nāma kṛtvā tato devā jagmuḥ sarve mahaujasaḥ gateṣu teṣu deveṣu somaśarmāsu tasya ca

Having performed the naming rite, all those mighty gods departed. When those gods had gone, Somasharma too—

Verse 46 (padma.2.20.46)

जातकर्मादिकं कर्म चकार द्विजसत्तमः । जाते पुत्रे महाभागे सुव्रते देवनिर्मिते

jātakarmādikaṁ karma cakāra dvijasattamaḥ jāte putre mahābhāge suvrate devanirmite

—that worthy brahmin performed the birth-rites and other ceremonies, when that greatly fortunate son, Suvrata, wrought by the gods, was born.

Verse 47 (padma.2.20.47)

तस्य गेहे महालक्ष्मीर्धनधान्यसमाकुला । गजाश्वमहिषी गावः कांचनं रत्नमेव च

tasya gehe mahālakṣmīrdhanadhānyasamākulā gajāśvamahiṣī gāvaḥ kāṁcanaṁ ratnameva ca

In his house, great Lakshmi came to dwell, filled with wealth and grain; elephants, horses, buffaloes, cows, gold, and jewels too—

Verse 48 (padma.2.20.48)

यथा कुबेरभवनं शुशुभे धनसंचयैः । तत्सोमशर्मणो गेहं तथैव परिराजते

yathā kuberabhavanaṁ śuśubhe dhanasaṁcayaiḥ tatsomaśarmaṇo gehaṁ tathaiva parirājate

—just as the mansion of Kubera shines with accumulated wealth, so did Somasharma's house shine forth in just the same way.

Verse 49 (padma.2.20.49)

ध्यानपुण्यादिकं कर्म चका रद्विजसत्तमः । तीर्थयात्रां गतो विप्रो नानापुण्यसमाकुलः

dhyānapuṇyādikaṁ karma cakā radvijasattamaḥ tīrthayātrāṁ gato vipro nānāpuṇyasamākulaḥ

That worthy brahmin performed meditation, meritorious rites, and the rest; that brahmin, filled with manifold merits, went on pilgrimage—

Verse 50 (padma.2.20.50)

अन्यानि यानि पुण्यानि दानानि द्विजसत्तमः । चकार तत्र मेधावी ज्ञानपुण्य समन्वितः

anyāni yāni puṇyāni dānāni dvijasattamaḥ cakāra tatra medhāvī jñānapuṇya samanvitaḥ

—and whatever other meritorious deeds and gifts there were, that worthy, wise brahmin performed there, joined with the merit of knowledge.

Verse 51 (padma.2.20.51)

एवं साधयते धर्मं पालयेच्च पुनःपुनः । पुत्रस्य जातकर्मादि कर्माणि द्विजसत्तमः

evaṁ sādhayate dharmaṁ pālayecca punaḥpunaḥ putrasya jātakarmādi karmāṇi dvijasattamaḥ

Thus did he accomplish and uphold dharma again and again; that worthy brahmin performed the birth-rites and other ceremonies for his son.

Verse 52 (padma.2.20.52)

विवाहं कारयामास हर्षेण महता किल । पुत्रस्य पुत्राः संजाताः सगुणा लक्षणान्विताः

vivāhaṁ kārayāmāsa harṣeṇa mahatā kila putrasya putrāḥ saṁjātāḥ saguṇā lakṣaṇānvitāḥ

He arranged the marriage of his son with great joy indeed; and sons were born to that son, virtuous and endowed with every auspicious mark.

Verse 53 (padma.2.20.53)

सत्यधर्मतपोपेता दानधर्मरताः सदा । स तेषां पुण्यकर्माणि सोमशर्मा चकार ह

satyadharmatapopetā dānadharmaratāḥ sadā sa teṣāṁ puṇyakarmāṇi somaśarmā cakāra ha

—endowed with truth, dharma, and austerity, ever devoted to giving and to dharma — for them, Somasharma performed the meritorious rites indeed.

Verse 54 (padma.2.20.54)

पौत्राणां तु महाभागस्तेषां सुखेन मोदते । सर्वं सौख्यं च संभुज्य जरारोगविवर्जितः

pautrāṇāṁ tu mahābhāgasteṣāṁ sukhena modate sarvaṁ saukhyaṁ ca saṁbhujya jarārogavivarjitaḥ

That greatly fortunate one rejoiced in happiness with his grandsons; enjoying every happiness, free of old age and disease—

Verse 55 (padma.2.20.55)

पंचविंशाब्दिको यद्वत्तद्वत्कायं तु तस्य हि । सूर्यतेजः प्रतीकाशः सोमशर्मा महामतिः

paṁcaviṁśābdiko yadvattadvatkāyaṁ tu tasya hi sūryatejaḥ pratīkāśaḥ somaśarmā mahāmatiḥ

—his very body remained as if he were twenty-five years old; that great-minded Somasharma resembled the splendor of the sun.

Verse 56 (padma.2.20.56)

सा चापि शुशुभे देवी सुमना पुण्यमंगलैः । पुत्रपौत्रैर्महाभागा दानव्रतैश्च संयमैः

sā cāpi śuśubhe devī sumanā puṇyamaṁgalaiḥ putrapautrairmahābhāgā dānavrataiśca saṁyamaiḥ

And that goddess-like Sumana too shone forth, through meritorious auspicious rites, that greatly fortunate one with her sons and grandsons, through gifts, vows, and self-discipline.

Verse 57 (padma.2.20.57)

अतिभाति विशालाक्षी पुण्यैः पतिव्रतादिभिः । तारुण्येन समायुक्ता यथा षोडशवार्षिकी

atibhāti viśālākṣī puṇyaiḥ pativratādibhiḥ tāruṇyena samāyuktā yathā ṣoḍaśavārṣikī

That wide-eyed woman shone exceedingly, through her merit and her devotion to her husband and the rest, joined with youthfulness as if she were sixteen years old.

Verse 58 (padma.2.20.58)

मोदमानौ महात्मानौ दंपती चारुमंगलौ । हर्षेण च समायुक्तौ पुण्यात्मानौ महोदयौ

modamānau mahātmānau daṁpatī cārumaṁgalau harṣeṇa ca samāyuktau puṇyātmānau mahodayau

That rejoicing, great-souled, most auspicious couple, joined with joy, meritorious souls of great glory—

Verse 59 (padma.2.20.59)

एवं तयोस्तु वृत्तांतं पुण्याचारसमन्वितम् । सुव्रतस्य प्रवक्ष्यामि व्रतचर्यां द्विजोत्तमाः

evaṁ tayostu vṛttāṁtaṁ puṇyācārasamanvitam suvratasya pravakṣyāmi vratacaryāṁ dvijottamāḥ

—thus has their account, joined with meritorious conduct, been told. Now I shall relate the observance of Suvrata's own vows, O best of brahmins—

Verse 60 (padma.2.20.60)

यथा तेन समाराध्य नारायणमनामयम्

yathā tena samārādhya nārāyaṇamanāmayam

—how, by him, Narayana, free of every affliction, was duly worshipped.
