Sukala said: Arrows and javelins loosed by the hunters fell like a dense cloud raining down upon the mountain-slopes, everywhere upon the ground; struck by those firm strikers, the herd-lord boar, locked in that combat, was thus beset by hundreds of blows.

Verse 33 (padma.2.43.33)

Yet, together with his sons, grandsons, and kinsmen, he struck down others in turn; hunters slain by his tusks fell in the battle; hands and feet fell about him as he whirled with speed; and thus the roaring boar beheld the pack of hunters closing upon him.

Verse 34 (padma.2.43.34)

That lord of boars, greatly enraged, having overpowered and terrified the mighty lord of the Ikshvakus, desired battle with him there in the forest, filled with the joy of combat.

Verse 36 (padma.2.43.36)

The boar, skilled in war, desired combat once more; enraged, churning the earth with the tip of his snout and his very sharp teeth and claws, he charged with a proud roar upon the stainless king; and the son of Manu, sensing in that boar a valor like Vishnu's own, felt his hair stand on end with joy.

Verse 37 (padma.2.43.37)

Seeing the boar's incomparable might and valor, the king reflected within his mind that this was, in boar's form, no ordinary being; and beholding that immense strength, he swiftly ordered his greater host of elephants and forces to be mustered for the boar's destruction.

Verse 38 (padma.2.43.38)

Elephants and swifter chariots were sent forth, bearing warriors armed with fine bows and swords, with fire-throwers and maces; hunters, snares in hand, roared there, intent on the chase; nothing could hold them back — the horses and elephants advanced wherever they would.

Verse 39 (padma.2.43.39)

The valiant lord of Kosala, beholding him — unconquerable in battle, vast of frame, fighting on and roaring like a thundercloud —

Verse 42 (padma.2.43.42)

roars amid the fray, ranges about, and steadfast, sports among the warriors by his own splendor; the tusks in his mouth flash and gleam like lightning.

Verse 43 (padma.2.43.43)

The son of Manu beheld the boar thus — pierced one by one by sharp arrows, wounded by weapons together with his kinsmen —

Verse 44 (padma.2.43.44)

The king said: 'O soldiers, O heroes, why do you not seize him here by your might? Fight him too with sharp, keen arrows.'

Verse 45 (padma.2.43.45)

Hearing then the words of that enraged great soul, all those soldiers stood ready for battle.

With many thousands of warriors, surrounding him on every side as he stood in battle in the forest, they pierced the boar in that fray.

Verse 47 (padma.2.43.47)

Wounded by the great volleys of arrows loosed by mighty warriors on that vast battlefield, struck here by discus-blows and there by thunderbolt-like strikes from the great ones, that unconquerable one was beset in the combat.

Verse 48 (padma.2.43.48)

Then that boar, enraged at these assaults, tore apart the ropes and set forth once more into the fray; drenched in streams of blood, he advanced together with the great boars.

Verse 49 (padma.2.43.49)
