The Boar Slain, the Gandharva King Redeemed

Verse 1 (padma.2.44.1)

सुकलोवाच- स्वसैन्यं दुर्धरं दृष्ट्वा निर्जितं दुर्धरेण तम् । चुकोप भूपतिः क्रूरं दुःसहं शूकरं प्रति

sukalovāca- svasainyaṁ durdharaṁ dṛṣṭvā nirjitaṁ durdhareṇa tam cukopa bhūpatiḥ krūraṁ duḥsahaṁ śūkaraṁ prati

Sukala said: Seeing his own formidable army defeated by that formidable one, the king grew wrathful against that fierce, unbearable boar.

Verse 2 (padma.2.44.2)

धनुरादाय वेगेन बाणं कालानलोपमम् । तस्याभिमुखमेवासौ हयेनाभिससार सः

dhanurādāya vegena bāṇaṁ kālānalopamam tasyābhimukhamevāsau hayenābhisasāra saḥ

Taking up his bow swiftly, with an arrow like the fire of doomsday, he charged upon his horse straight toward him.

Verse 3 (padma.2.44.3)

स यदा नृपतिं हयपृष्ठगतं वरपौरुषयुक्तममित्रहणम् । परिपश्यति शूकरयूथपतिः प्रगतोभिमुखं रणभूमितले

sa yadā nṛpatiṁ hayapṛṣṭhagataṁ varapauruṣayuktamamitrahaṇam paripaśyati śūkarayūthapatiḥ pragatobhimukhaṁ raṇabhūmitale

When the lord of the boar-herd beheld the king, mounted on horseback, endowed with excellent valor, a slayer of foes, advancing to face him on the battle-ground —

Verse 4 (padma.2.44.4)

निशितेन शरेण हतो हि यदा नृपतेर्हयपादतले प्रगतः । तमिहैव विलंघ्य च वेगमनाः प्रखरेण जवेन च कोलवरः

niśitena śareṇa hato hi yadā nṛpaterhayapādatale pragataḥ tamihaiva vilaṁghya ca vegamanāḥ prakhareṇa javena ca kolavaraḥ

When, struck by that sharp arrow, he fell beneath the feet of the king's horse, that finest of boars, his mind fixed on speed, leapt over it with a swift, keen bound.

Verse 5 (padma.2.44.5)

व्यथितस्तुरगः सकिरिःकिटिना न हि याति क्षितौ स हि विद्धगतिः । तुरगः पतितो भुवि तुंडहतो लघुस्यंदनमेव गतो नृपतिः

vyathitasturagaḥ sakiriḥkiṭinā na hi yāti kṣitau sa hi viddhagatiḥ turagaḥ patito bhuvi tuṁḍahato laghusyaṁdanameva gato nṛpatiḥ

The horse, distressed by the boar, could no longer move upon the ground, its gait broken; struck by his snout, the horse fell to the earth, and the king went on instead in a light chariot.

Verse 6 (padma.2.44.6)

स हि गर्जति शूकरजातिरवैरथसंस्थितकोशल येन जवैः । गदया निहतः किल भूपतिना रणमध्यगतः स हि यूथपतिः

sa hi garjati śūkarajātiravairathasaṁsthitakośala yena javaiḥ gadayā nihataḥ kila bhūpatinā raṇamadhyagataḥ sa hi yūthapatiḥ

Roaring still with the cries of his boar-kind, he rushed upon the lord of Kosala now stationed on his chariot; and that herd-lord, having come into the midst of the battle, was struck down by the king's mace.

Verse 7 (padma.2.44.7)

परित्यज्य तनुं च स्वकां हि तदा गत एव हरेर्गृहमेव वरम्

parityajya tanuṁ ca svakāṁ hi tadā gata eva harergṛhameva varam

Then, giving up his own body, he went at once to the very abode of Hari — the finest of destinations.

Verse 8 (padma.2.44.8)

कृत्वा हि युद्धं समरे हितेन राज्ञा समं शूकरराजराजः । पपात भूमौ च हतो यदा तु ववर्षिरे देववराः सुपुष्पैः

kṛtvā hi yuddhaṁ samare hitena rājñā samaṁ śūkararājarājaḥ papāta bhūmau ca hato yadā tu vavarṣire devavarāḥ supuṣpaiḥ

Having fought well in that battle with the king, the very king of boars fell to the ground, slain; and when he fell, the great gods rained down fine flowers upon him.

Verse 9 (padma.2.44.9)

तस्योर्ध्वगः पुष्पचयः सुजातः संतानकानामिव सौरभश्च । सकुंकुमैश्चंदनवृष्टिमेव कुर्वंति देवाः परितुष्यमाणाः

tasyordhvagaḥ puṣpacayaḥ sujātaḥ saṁtānakānāmiva saurabhaśca sakuṁkumaiścaṁdanavṛṣṭimeva kurvaṁti devāḥ parituṣyamāṇāḥ

A fine shower of flowers rose over him, fragrant as the celestial santanaka blossoms; and the gods, filled with delight, rained down saffron and sandal-water upon him.

Verse 10 (padma.2.44.10)

विमृश्यमानः स हि तेन राज्ञा चतुर्भुजः सोपि बभूव राजन् । दिव्यांबरोभूषणदिव्यरूपः स्वतेजसा भाति दिवाकरो यथा

vimṛśyamānaḥ sa hi tena rājñā caturbhujaḥ sopi babhūva rājan divyāṁbarobhūṣaṇadivyarūpaḥ svatejasā bhāti divākaro yathā

As he was gazed upon by that king, O king, he too became four-armed, clad in divine garments and ornaments, of divine form, shining by his own splendor like the sun.

Verse 11 (padma.2.44.11)

दिव्येन यानेन दिवं गतो यदा सुपूज्यमानः सुरराजदेवैः । गंधर्वराजः स बभूव भूयः पूर्वं स्वकं कायमिहैव हित्वा

divyena yānena divaṁ gato yadā supūjyamānaḥ surarājadevaiḥ gaṁdharvarājaḥ sa babhūva bhūyaḥ pūrvaṁ svakaṁ kāyamihaiva hitvā

When, in a divine chariot, he went to heaven, greatly honored by Indra and the gods, he became once more the king of the Gandharvas, having abandoned here his former body.
