sukalovāca- śvasaṁtīṁ śūkarīṁ dṛṣṭvā patitāṁ putravatsalām sudevāvakṛpayāviṣṭā gatvā tāṁ duḥkhitāṁ prati
Sukala said: Seeing the boar-wife, fallen and gasping, so devoted to her son, Sudeva, moved with compassion, went to that suffering one.
Verse 2 (padma.2.46.2)
abhiṣicya mukhaṁ tasyāḥ śītalenodakena ca punaḥ sarvāṁgamevāpi duḥkhitāṁ raṇaśālinīm
She sprinkled her face with cool water, and then her whole body too, that grieving one who had shone so bravely in battle.
Verse 3 (padma.2.46.3)

As she sprinkled her with that blessed cool water, the boar-wife spoke to her, the king's beloved, in a sweet voice — with human speech.
Verse 4 (padma.2.46.4)

paśya rājannapūrveyaṁ saṁskṛtaṁ bhāṣate mahat paśuyonigatā ceyaṁ yathā vai mānuṣo vadet
'See, O king, how unprecedented — she speaks great Sanskrit, though born in an animal womb, just as a human would speak!'
Verse 9 (padma.2.46.9)

Then the king spoke to his beloved Sudeva: 'Ask her, my auspicious dear — who is she, and what will become of her?'
Verse 11 (padma.2.46.11)

'—one whose meditation does not waver at all, he alone is the steadfast, true practitioner of austerity. But you, conquered by your own senses, are lacking in that power.'
Verse 38 (padma.2.46.38)

evamābhāṣya taṁ vipraṁ gītavidyādharastadā samākarṇya tatastena muninā tasya uttaram
Having thus spoken to that brahmin, the Gitavidyadhara fell silent; and the sage, having heard his reply —
Verse 42 (padma.2.46.42)
ciṁtayāmāsa medhāvī kiṁ kṛtvā sukṛtaṁ bhavet kṣamāṁ kṛtvā jagāmātha anyatsthānaṁ dvijottamaḥ
—that wise one pondered what good action he should take; and, exercising forbearance, that foremost of brahmins went then to another place.
Verse 43 (padma.2.46.43)

sarvendriyāṇi saṁyamya manasā samameva ca evaṁ sthitastadā yogī pulastyo munisattamaḥ
Restraining all his senses together with his mind, thus that yogi Pulastya, foremost among sages, remained established.
Verse 45 (padma.2.46.45)
sukalovāca- gate tasminmahābhāge pulastye munipuṁgave kālādiṣṭena tenāpi gītavidyādhareṇa ca
Sukala said: When that blessed and eminent sage Pulastya had gone, the Gitavidyadhara too, prompted by time —
Verse 46 (padma.2.46.46)
ciṁtitaṁ suciraṁ kālaṁ na dṛṣṭoyaṁ bhayānmama kva gatastiṣṭhate vāpi kurute kiṁ kathaṁ ca saḥ
—thought for a long while: 'He has not been seen, for fear of me; where has he gone, or does he still remain, and what, and how, is he doing?'
Verse 47 (padma.2.46.47)
jñātvā padmātmajasutamekāṁtavanaśālinam gato varāharūpeṇa tasyāśramamanuttamam
Learning that the sage dwelt in a solitary forest, he went in the form of a boar to that excellent hermitage.
Verse 48 (padma.2.46.48)
āsanasthaṁ mahātmānaṁ tejojvālāsamāvilam dṛṣṭvā cakāra vai kṣobhaṁ tasya viprasya bhāmini
Seeing that great soul seated in meditation, glowing as if wreathed in flames of splendor, he, O lovely one, set about disturbing that brahmin.
Verse 49 (padma.2.46.49)
dharṣayenniyataṁ vipraṁ tuṁḍāgreṇa kuceṣṭayā paśuṁ jñātvā mahārāja kṣamate tasya duṣkṛtam
With the tip of his snout and unruly antics, he kept troubling the steadfast brahmin; but, O great king, taking him for a mere animal, the sage forgave his misdeeds.
Verse 50 (padma.2.46.50)
mūtrayetpurataḥ kṛtvā viṣṭhāṁ ca kurute tataḥ nṛtyate krīḍate tatra patati proccaletpunaḥ

Verse 51 (padma.2.46.51)
paśuṁ jñātvā parityakto muninā tena bhūpate ekadā tu tathāyāte tena rūpeṇa vai punaḥ
Taking him for an animal, that sage let him be, O king. But one day, when he came again in that same form —
Verse 52 (padma.2.46.52)
aṭṭāṭṭahāsena punarhāsyamevaṁ kṛtaṁ tadā rodanaṁ ca kṛtaṁ tatra gītaṁ gāyati susvaram
—with loud and repeated peals of laughter he laughed; and then he wept there too, and sang a song in a sweet voice.
Verse 53 (padma.2.46.53)
tathā tamāgataṁ vipro gītavidyādharaṁ nṛpa ceṣṭitaṁ tasya vai dṛṣṭvā ghoṇireṣa bhavennahi
O king, seeing the antics of that Gitavidyadhara who had come thus, the brahmin realized: 'This cannot be a mere boar.'
Verse 54 (padma.2.46.54)
jñātvā tasya tu vṛttāṁtaṁ māmevaṁ paricālayet paśuṁ jñātvā mayā tyakto duṣṭa eṣa sunirghṛṇaḥ
'Now I understand his purpose — he means to unsettle me thus. Taking him for an animal I let him be, but this wicked one is utterly without mercy.'
Verse 55 (padma.2.46.55)
evaṁ jñātvā mahātmānaṁ gaṁdharvādhamameva hi cukopa muniśārdūlastaṁ śaśāpa mahāmatiḥ
Knowing thus that this was indeed that lowly Gandharva in disguise, the tiger among sages, that wise one, grew wrathful and cursed him.
Verse 56 (padma.2.46.56)
yasmācchūkararūpeṇa māmevaṁ paricālayeḥ tasmādvraja mahāpāpa pāpayoniṁ tu śaukarīm
'Since in the form of a boar you have thus disturbed me, therefore, O great sinner, go to the sinful womb of a boar.'
Verse 57 (padma.2.46.57)
śaptastenāpi vipreṇa gato devaṁ puraṁdaram tamuvāca mahātmānaṁ kaṁpamāno varānane
Cursed by that brahmin, he went to the god Purandara; trembling, he spoke thus to that great one, O fair-faced one.
Verse 58 (padma.2.46.58)
śṛṇu vākyaṁ sahasrākṣa tava kāryaṁ kṛtaṁ mayā tapa eva hi kurvansandāruṇaṁ munipuṁgavaḥ
'Hear my words, O thousand-eyed one — I did this deed for your sake; while that foremost of sages was performing severe austerity —'
Verse 59 (padma.2.46.59)
tasmāttapaḥprabhāvāttu cālitaḥ kṣobhito mayā śaptastenāsmi vipreṇa devarūpaṁ praṇāśitam
'—I disturbed and shook him from the power of his austerity; and by that brahmin I have been cursed, my divine form destroyed.'
Verse 60 (padma.2.46.60)
paśuyoniṁ gataṁ śakra māmevaṁ parirakṣaya jñātvā tasya sa vṛttāṁtaṁ gītavidyādharasya ca
'O Shakra, I am now bound for an animal womb — protect me thus.' Having heard this whole account of the Gitavidyadhara —
Verse 61 (padma.2.46.61)
