Yayati Proclaims the Name of Vishnu Throughout the Earth

Verse 1 (padma.2.73.1)

पिप्पल उवाच- गते तस्मिन्महाभागे दूत इंद्रस्य वै पुनः । किं चकार स धर्मात्मा ययातिर्नहुषात्मजः

pippala uvāca- gate tasminmahābhāge dūta iṁdrasya vai punaḥ kiṁ cakāra sa dharmātmā yayātirnahuṣātmajaḥ

Pippala said: "When that blessed messenger of Indra had departed, what then did the righteous king Yayati, son of Nahusha, do?"

Verse 2 (padma.2.73.2)

सुकर्मोवाच- तस्मिन्गते देववरस्य दूते स चिंतयामास नरेंद्रसूनुः । आहूय दूतान्प्रवरान्स सत्वरं धर्मार्थयुक्तं वच आदिदेश

sukarmovāca- tasmingate devavarasya dūte sa ciṁtayāmāsa nareṁdrasūnuḥ āhūya dūtānpravarānsa satvaraṁ dharmārthayuktaṁ vaca ādideśa

Sukarma said: "When the messenger of the best of gods had gone, that son of the king of men pondered; he swiftly summoned his foremost messengers and gave them a command filled with dharma and purpose."

Verse 3 (padma.2.73.3)

गच्छंतु दूताः प्रवराः पुरोत्तमे देशेषु द्वीपेष्वखिलेषु लोके । कुर्वंतु वाक्यं मम धर्मयुक्तं व्रजंतु लोकाः सुपथा हरेश्च

gacchaṁtu dūtāḥ pravarāḥ purottame deśeṣu dvīpeṣvakhileṣu loke kurvaṁtu vākyaṁ mama dharmayuktaṁ vrajaṁtu lokāḥ supathā hareśca

"'Let my finest messengers go forth to the great cities, to every land and to all the islands of the world; let them carry out my command, rooted in dharma, and let the people walk the good path of Hari.'"

Verse 4 (padma.2.73.4)

भावैः सुपुण्यैरमृतोपमानैर्ध्यानैश्च ज्ञानैर्यजनैस्तपोभिः । यज्ञैश्च दानैर्मधुसूदनैकमर्चंतु लोका विषयान्विहाय

bhāvaiḥ supuṇyairamṛtopamānairdhyānaiśca jñānairyajanaistapobhiḥ yajñaiśca dānairmadhusūdanaikamarcaṁtu lokā viṣayānvihāya

"'With pure, nectar-like devotion, with meditation and knowledge, with worship and austerity, with sacrifice and gift, let the people worship Madhusudana alone, forsaking sense-pleasures.'"

Verse 5 (padma.2.73.5)

सर्वत्र पश्यंत्वसुरारिमेकं शुष्केषु चार्द्रेष्वपि स्थावरेषु । अभ्रेषु भूमौ सचराचरेषु स्वीयेषु कायेष्वपि जीवरूपम्

sarvatra paśyaṁtvasurārimekaṁ śuṣkeṣu cārdreṣvapi sthāvareṣu abhreṣu bhūmau sacarācareṣu svīyeṣu kāyeṣvapi jīvarūpam

"'Let them see that one enemy of the asuras everywhere - in things dry and moist, in the unmoving, in the clouds, on the earth, in all that moves and does not move, and even within their own bodies, in the form of the living self.'"

Verse 6 (padma.2.73.6)

देवं तमुद्दिश्य ददंतु दानमातिथ्यभावैः परिपैत्रिकैश्च । नारायणं देववरं यजध्वं दोषैर्विमुक्ता अचिराद्भविष्यथ

devaṁ tamuddiśya dadaṁtu dānamātithyabhāvaiḥ paripaitrikaiśca nārāyaṇaṁ devavaraṁ yajadhvaṁ doṣairvimuktā acirādbhaviṣyatha

"'With that God alone in mind, let them give gifts in the spirit of hospitality and of offerings to the ancestors; let them worship Narayana, best of gods - you shall soon be freed from all faults.'"

Verse 7 (padma.2.73.7)

यो मामकं वाक्यमिहैव मानवो लोभाद्विमोहादपि नैव कारयेत् । स शास्यतां यास्यति निर्घृणो ध्रुवं ममापि चौरो हि यथा निकृष्टः

yo māmakaṁ vākyamihaiva mānavo lobhādvimohādapi naiva kārayet sa śāsyatāṁ yāsyati nirghṛṇo dhruvaṁ mamāpi cauro hi yathā nikṛṣṭaḥ

"'Whatever man here fails to carry out this command of mine, whether from greed or delusion, let him be punished - he shall surely be treated without mercy, like a base thief.'"

Verse 8 (padma.2.73.8)

आकर्ण्य वाक्यं नृपतेश्च दूताःसंहृष्टभावाः सकलां च पृथ्वीम् । आचख्युरेवं नृपतेः प्रणीतमादेशभावं सकलं प्रजासु

ākarṇya vākyaṁ nṛpateśca dūtāḥsaṁhṛṣṭabhāvāḥ sakalāṁ ca pṛthvīm ācakhyurevaṁ nṛpateḥ praṇītamādeśabhāvaṁ sakalaṁ prajāsu

Hearing the king's words, the messengers, filled with joy, went across the whole earth and proclaimed the full intent of the king's command to all the people.

Verse 9 (padma.2.73.9)

विप्रादिमर्त्या अमृतं सुपुण्यमानीतमेवं भुवि तेन राज्ञा । पिबंतु पुण्यं परिवैष्णवाख्यं दोषैर्विहीनं परिणाममिष्टम्

viprādimartyā amṛtaṁ supuṇyamānītamevaṁ bhuvi tena rājñā pibaṁtu puṇyaṁ parivaiṣṇavākhyaṁ doṣairvihīnaṁ pariṇāmamiṣṭam

Thus that king brought this pure and meritorious nectar to the earth for brahmins and other men; let them drink this Vaishnava merit, free of fault, whose fruit is desired.

Verse 10 (padma.2.73.10)

श्रीकेशवं क्लेशहरं वरेण्यमानंदरूपं परमार्थमेवम् । नामामृतं दोषहरं सुराज्ञा आनीतमस्त्येव पिबंतु लोकाः

śrīkeśavaṁ kleśaharaṁ vareṇyamānaṁdarūpaṁ paramārthamevam nāmāmṛtaṁ doṣaharaṁ surājñā ānītamastyeva pibaṁtu lokāḥ

Glorious Keshava, remover of affliction, most excellent, whose form is bliss, the supreme goal - this nectar of the name, remover of faults, has been brought by the good king; let the people drink it.

Verse 11 (padma.2.73.11)

सखड्गपाणिं मधुसूदनाख्यं तं श्रीनिवासं सगुणं सुरेशम् । नामामृतं दोषहरं सुराज्ञा आनीतमस्त्येव पिबंतु लोकाः

sakhaḍgapāṇiṁ madhusūdanākhyaṁ taṁ śrīnivāsaṁ saguṇaṁ sureśam nāmāmṛtaṁ doṣaharaṁ surājñā ānītamastyeva pibaṁtu lokāḥ

He who bears a sword in hand, called Madhusudana, the abode of Shri, possessed of every good quality, lord of the gods - this nectar of the name, remover of faults, has been brought by the good king; let the people drink it.

Verse 12 (padma.2.73.12)

श्रीपद्मनाथं कमलेक्षणं च आधाररूपं जगतां महेशम् । नामामृतं दोषहरं सुराज्ञा आनीतमस्त्येव पिबंतु लोकाः

śrīpadmanāthaṁ kamalekṣaṇaṁ ca ādhārarūpaṁ jagatāṁ maheśam nāmāmṛtaṁ doṣaharaṁ surājñā ānītamastyeva pibaṁtu lokāḥ

The glorious lord of Padma, lotus-eyed, the very foundation and great lord of all the worlds - this nectar of the name, remover of faults, has been brought by the good king; let the people drink it.

Verse 13 (padma.2.73.13)

पापापहं व्याधिविनाशरूपमानंददं दानवदैत्यनाशनम् । नामामृतं दोषहरं सुराज्ञा आनीतमस्त्येव पिबंतु लोकाः

pāpāpahaṁ vyādhivināśarūpamānaṁdadaṁ dānavadaityanāśanam nāmāmṛtaṁ doṣaharaṁ surājñā ānītamastyeva pibaṁtu lokāḥ

Remover of sin, destroyer of disease, giver of bliss, destroyer of Danavas and Daityas - this nectar of the name, remover of faults, has been brought by the good king; let the people drink it.

Verse 14 (padma.2.73.14)

यज्ञांगरूपं चरथांगपाणिं पुण्याकरं सौख्यमनंतरूपम् । नामामृतं दोषहरं सुराज्ञा आनीतमस्त्येव पिबंतु लोकाः

yajñāṁgarūpaṁ carathāṁgapāṇiṁ puṇyākaraṁ saukhyamanaṁtarūpam nāmāmṛtaṁ doṣaharaṁ surājñā ānītamastyeva pibaṁtu lokāḥ

Whose form is the very limb of sacrifice, who bears the discus in hand, the mine of merit, happiness itself, of endless form - this nectar of the name, remover of faults, has been brought by the good king; let the people drink it.

Verse 15 (padma.2.73.15)

विश्वाधिवासं विमलं विरामं रामाभिधानं रमणं मुरारिम् । नामामृतं दोषहरं सुराज्ञा आनीतमस्त्येव पिबंतु लोकाः

viśvādhivāsaṁ vimalaṁ virāmaṁ rāmābhidhānaṁ ramaṇaṁ murārim nāmāmṛtaṁ doṣaharaṁ surājñā ānītamastyeva pibaṁtu lokāḥ

The dwelling-place of the universe, the stainless one, the resting-place, called by the name Rama, the beloved, Murari - this nectar of the name, remover of faults, has been brought by the good king; let the people drink it.

Verse 16 (padma.2.73.16)

आदित्यरूपं तमसां विनाशं बंधस्यनाशं मतिपंकजानाम् । नामामृतं दोषहरं सुराज्ञा आनीतमस्त्येव पिबंतु लोकाः

ādityarūpaṁ tamasāṁ vināśaṁ baṁdhasyanāśaṁ matipaṁkajānām nāmāmṛtaṁ doṣaharaṁ surājñā ānītamastyeva pibaṁtu lokāḥ

Of the form of the sun, the destroyer of darkness, the breaker of the bonds of the lotus of the mind - this nectar of the name, remover of faults, has been brought by the good king; let the people drink it.

Verse 17 (padma.2.73.17)

नामामृतं सत्यमिदं सुपुण्यमधीत्य यो मानव विष्णुभक्तः । प्रभातकाले नियतो महात्मा स याति मुक्तिं न हि कारणं च

nāmāmṛtaṁ satyamidaṁ supuṇyamadhītya yo mānava viṣṇubhaktaḥ prabhātakāle niyato mahātmā sa yāti muktiṁ na hi kāraṇaṁ ca

Whatever man, devoted to Vishnu, disciplined in his practice, recites this true and most meritorious nectar of the name at dawn - that great soul attains liberation; no other cause is needed.
