The Whole Earth Turns to Vishnu
Verse 1 (padma.2.74.1)
सुकर्मोवाच- दूतास्तु ग्रामेषु वदंति सर्वे द्वीपेषु देशेष्वथ पत्तनेषु । लोकाः शृणुध्वं नृपतेस्तदाज्ञां सर्वप्रभावैर्हरिमर्चयंतु
sukarmovāca- dūtāstu grāmeṣu vadaṁti sarve dvīpeṣu deśeṣvatha pattaneṣu lokāḥ śṛṇudhvaṁ nṛpatestadājñāṁ sarvaprabhāvairharimarcayaṁtu
Sukarma said: "The messengers proclaimed everywhere - in villages, on every island, in every land and city: 'People, hear the king's command! Worship Hari with your full devotion.'"
Verse 2 (padma.2.74.2)
दानैश्च यज्ञैर्बहुभिस्तपोभिर्धर्माभिलाषैर्यजनैर्मनोभिः । ध्यायंतु लोका मधुसूदनं तु आदेशमेवं नृपतेस्तु तस्य
dānaiśca yajñairbahubhistapobhirdharmābhilāṣairyajanairmanobhiḥ dhyāyaṁtu lokā madhusūdanaṁ tu ādeśamevaṁ nṛpatestu tasya
"'With gifts, with many sacrifices, with austerity, with the longing for dharma, with worship and with devoted minds, let the people meditate upon Madhusudana' - such was the king's command."
Verse 3 (padma.2.74.3)
एवं सुघुष्टं सकलं तु पुण्यमाकर्ण्य तं भूमितलेषु लोकैः । तदाप्रभृत्येव यजंति विष्णुं ध्यायंति गायंति जपंति मर्त्याः
evaṁ sughuṣṭaṁ sakalaṁ tu puṇyamākarṇya taṁ bhūmitaleṣu lokaiḥ tadāprabhṛtyeva yajaṁti viṣṇuṁ dhyāyaṁti gāyaṁti japaṁti martyāḥ
Hearing this wholly auspicious proclamation resound everywhere on earth, the people, from that time onward, worshipped Vishnu, meditated upon him, sang of him, and recited his name.
Verse 4 (padma.2.74.4)
वेदप्रणीतैश्च सुसूक्तमंत्रैः स्तोत्रैः सुपुण्यैरमृतोपमानैः । श्रीकेशवं तद्गतमानसास्ते व्रतोपवासैर्नियमैश्च दानैः
vedapraṇītaiśca susūktamaṁtraiḥ stotraiḥ supuṇyairamṛtopamānaiḥ śrīkeśavaṁ tadgatamānasāste vratopavāsairniyamaiśca dānaiḥ
With well-composed hymns and mantras taught by the Veda, with pure, ambrosial praises, their minds fixed upon him, through vows, fasts, disciplines, and gifts, they worshipped glorious Keshava.
Verse 5 (padma.2.74.5)
विहाय दोषान्निजकायचित्तवागुद्भवान्प्रेमरताः समस्ताः । लक्ष्मीनिवासं जगतां निवासं श्रीवासुदेवं परिपूजयंति
vihāya doṣānnijakāyacittavāgudbhavānpremaratāḥ samastāḥ lakṣmīnivāsaṁ jagatāṁ nivāsaṁ śrīvāsudevaṁ paripūjayaṁti
Abandoning the faults born of their own body, mind, and speech, all of them, absorbed in love, worshipped Shri Vasudeva, the abode of Lakshmi and the abode of the worlds.
Verse 6 (padma.2.74.6)
इत्याज्ञातस्य भूपस्य वर्तते क्षितिमंडले । वैष्णवेनापि भावेन जनाः सर्वे जयंति ते
ityājñātasya bhūpasya vartate kṣitimaṁḍale vaiṣṇavenāpi bhāvena janāḥ sarve jayaṁti te
Thus, by that king's command, throughout the whole earth all the people prevailed through the very spirit of devotion to Vishnu.
Verse 7 (padma.2.74.7)
नामभिः कर्मभिर्विष्णुं यजंते ज्ञानकोविदाः । तद्ध्यानास्तद्व्यवसिता विष्णुपूजापरायणाः
nāmabhiḥ karmabhirviṣṇuṁ yajaṁte jñānakovidāḥ taddhyānāstadvyavasitā viṣṇupūjāparāyaṇāḥ
Those skilled in knowledge worshipped Vishnu through his names and through their deeds; meditating on him and resolved upon him, they were wholly devoted to his worship.
Verse 8 (padma.2.74.8)
यावद्भूमंडलं सर्वं यावत्तपति भास्करः । तावद्धि मानवा लोकाः सर्वे भागवता बभुः
yāvadbhūmaṁḍalaṁ sarvaṁ yāvattapati bhāskaraḥ tāvaddhi mānavā lokāḥ sarve bhāgavatā babhuḥ
As long as this whole earth endures, as long as the sun gives its heat, so long did all the people of the world remain devotees of Vishnu.
Verse 9 (padma.2.74.9)
विष्णोर्ध्यानप्रभावेण पूजास्तोत्रेण नामतः । आधिव्याधिविहीनास्ते संजाता मानवास्तदा
viṣṇordhyānaprabhāveṇa pūjāstotreṇa nāmataḥ ādhivyādhivihīnāste saṁjātā mānavāstadā
By the power of meditation on Vishnu, through worship, praise, and the recitation of his name, the people then became free from every affliction of body and mind.
Verse 10 (padma.2.74.10)
वीतशोकाश्च पुण्याश्च सर्वे चैव तपोधनाः । संजाता वैष्णवा विप्र प्रसादात्तस्य चक्रिणः
vītaśokāśca puṇyāśca sarve caiva tapodhanāḥ saṁjātā vaiṣṇavā vipra prasādāttasya cakriṇaḥ
Free from sorrow and rich in merit, all became devoted to austerity, and by the grace of him who bears the discus, they became Vaishnavas, O brahmin.
Verse 11 (padma.2.74.11)
आमयैश्च विहीनास्ते दोषैरोषैश्च वर्जिताः । सर्वैश्वर्यसमापन्नाः सर्वरोगविवर्जिताः
āmayaiśca vihīnāste doṣairoṣaiśca varjitāḥ sarvaiśvaryasamāpannāḥ sarvarogavivarjitāḥ
Free from disease, free from fault and anger, endowed with every prosperity, they were freed from every illness.
Verse 12 (padma.2.74.12)
प्रसादात्तस्य देवस्य संजाता मानवास्तदा । अमराः निर्जराः सर्वे धनधान्यसमन्विताः
prasādāttasya devasya saṁjātā mānavāstadā amarāḥ nirjarāḥ sarve dhanadhānyasamanvitāḥ
By the grace of that God, the people then became as if immortal and free from decay, all endowed with wealth and grain.
Verse 13 (padma.2.74.13)
मर्त्या विष्णुप्रसादेन पुत्रपौत्रैरलंकृताः । तेषामेव महाभाग गृहद्वारेषु नित्यदा
martyā viṣṇuprasādena putrapautrairalaṁkṛtāḥ teṣāmeva mahābhāga gṛhadvāreṣu nityadā
By Vishnu's grace, mortals were adorned with sons and grandsons; and at the very doors of their houses, O blessed one, always -
Verse 14 (padma.2.74.14)
कल्पद्रुमाः सुपुण्यास्ते सर्वकामफलप्रदाः । सर्वकामदुघा गावः सचिंतामणयस्तथा
kalpadrumāḥ supuṇyāste sarvakāmaphalapradāḥ sarvakāmadughā gāvaḥ saciṁtāmaṇayastathā
- there stood holy wish-fulfilling trees, granting every desired fruit, along with wish-granting cows and wishing-jewels.
Verse 15 (padma.2.74.15)
संति तेषां गृहे पुण्याः सर्वकामप्रदायकाः । अमरा मानवा जाताः पुत्रपौत्रैरलंकृताः
saṁti teṣāṁ gṛhe puṇyāḥ sarvakāmapradāyakāḥ amarā mānavā jātāḥ putrapautrairalaṁkṛtāḥ
These holy, wish-fulfilling things existed in their homes; the people, as if immortal, were adorned with sons and grandsons.
Verse 16 (padma.2.74.16)
सर्वदोषविहीनास्ते विष्णोश्चैव प्रसादतः । सर्वसौभाग्यसंपन्नाः पुण्यमंगलसंयुताः
sarvadoṣavihīnāste viṣṇoścaiva prasādataḥ sarvasaubhāgyasaṁpannāḥ puṇyamaṁgalasaṁyutāḥ
By Vishnu's grace they became free from every fault, endowed with every good fortune, and filled with merit and auspiciousness.
Verse 17 (padma.2.74.17)
सुपुण्या दानसंपन्ना ज्ञानध्यानपरायणाः । न दुर्भिक्षं न च व्याधिर्नाकालमरणं नृणाम्
supuṇyā dānasaṁpannā jñānadhyānaparāyaṇāḥ na durbhikṣaṁ na ca vyādhirnākālamaraṇaṁ nṛṇām
Meritorious, rich in charity, devoted to knowledge and meditation - among men there was neither famine, nor disease, nor untimely death.
Verse 18 (padma.2.74.18)
तस्मिञ्शासति धर्मज्ञे ययातौ नृपतौ तदा । वैष्णवा मानवाः सर्वे विष्णुव्रतपरायणाः
tasmiñśāsati dharmajñe yayātau nṛpatau tadā vaiṣṇavā mānavāḥ sarve viṣṇuvrataparāyaṇāḥ
While the righteous king Yayati thus ruled, all the people, becoming Vaishnavas, were devoted to the vow of Vishnu.
Verse 19 (padma.2.74.19)
तद्ध्यानास्तद्गताः सर्वे संजाता भावतत्पराः । तेषां गृहाणि दिव्यानि पुण्यानि द्विजसत्तम
taddhyānāstadgatāḥ sarve saṁjātā bhāvatatparāḥ teṣāṁ gṛhāṇi divyāni puṇyāni dvijasattama
Meditating on him, absorbed in him, all became devoted in spirit; their homes, O best of the twice-born, became divine and holy.
Verse 20 (padma.2.74.20)
पताकाभिः सुशुक्लाभिः शंखयुक्तानि तानि वै । गदांकितध्वजाभिश्च नित्यं चक्रांकितानि च
patākābhiḥ suśuklābhiḥ śaṁkhayuktāni tāni vai gadāṁkitadhvajābhiśca nityaṁ cakrāṁkitāni ca
Their homes were marked with pure white banners bearing the conch, with flags marked by the mace, and were always marked with the sign of the discus.
Verse 21 (padma.2.74.21)
पद्मांकितानि भासंते विमानप्रतिमानि च । गृहाणि भित्तिभागेषु चित्रितानि सुचित्रकैः
padmāṁkitāni bhāsaṁte vimānapratimāni ca gṛhāṇi bhittibhāgeṣu citritāni sucitrakaiḥ
Shining with the emblem of the lotus, they seemed like celestial vehicles; the walls of the houses were painted with fine paintings.
Verse 22 (padma.2.74.22)
सर्वत्र गृहद्वारेषु पुण्यस्थानेषु सत्तमाः । वनानि संति दिव्यानि शाद्वलानि शुभानि च
sarvatra gṛhadvāreṣu puṇyasthāneṣu sattamāḥ vanāni saṁti divyāni śādvalāni śubhāni ca
Everywhere, O worthy ones, at the doors of houses and in holy places, there were divine groves and lovely green meadows.
Verse 23 (padma.2.74.23)
तुलस्या च द्विजश्रेष्ठ तेषु केशवमंदिरैः । भासंते पुण्यदिव्यानि गृहाणि प्राणिनां सदा
tulasyā ca dvijaśreṣṭha teṣu keśavamaṁdiraiḥ bhāsaṁte puṇyadivyāni gṛhāṇi prāṇināṁ sadā
With tulasi plants, O best of the twice-born, and with temples of Keshava among them, those holy, divine homes always shone for their dwellers.
Verse 24 (padma.2.74.24)
सर्वत्र वैष्णवो भावो मंगलो बहु दृश्यते । शंखशब्दाश्च भूलोके मिथः स्फोटरवैः सखे
sarvatra vaiṣṇavo bhāvo maṁgalo bahu dṛśyate śaṁkhaśabdāśca bhūloke mithaḥ sphoṭaravaiḥ sakhe
Everywhere the spirit of devotion to Vishnu and great auspiciousness were seen; and, O friend, the sounds of conches bursting forth across the earth, one answering another -
Verse 25 (padma.2.74.25)
श्रूयंते तत्र विप्रेंद्र दोषपापविनाशकाः । शंखस्वस्तिकपद्मानि गृहद्वारेषु भित्तिषु
śrūyaṁte tatra vipreṁdra doṣapāpavināśakāḥ śaṁkhasvastikapadmāni gṛhadvāreṣu bhittiṣu
- were heard there, O lord of brahmins, destroying fault and sin; conches, swastikas, and lotuses on the walls at the doors of houses -
Verse 26 (padma.2.74.26)
विष्णुभक्त्या च नारीभिर्लिखितानि द्विजोत्तम । गीतरागसुवर्णैश्च मूर्च्छना तानसुस्वरैः
viṣṇubhaktyā ca nārībhirlikhitāni dvijottama gītarāgasuvarṇaiśca mūrcchanā tānasusvaraiḥ
- were drawn there by women out of devotion to Vishnu, O best of the twice-born; with sweet melodies, notes, and tunes -
Verse 27 (padma.2.74.27)
गायंति केशवं लोका विष्णुध्यानपरायणाः
gāyaṁti keśavaṁ lokā viṣṇudhyānaparāyaṇāḥ
- the people, wholly absorbed in meditation on Vishnu, sang the praises of Keshava.
Verse 28 (padma.2.74.28)
हरिं मुरारिं प्रवदंति केशवं प्रीत्या जितं माधवमेव चान्ये । श्रीनारसिंहं कमलेक्षणं तं गोविंदमेकं कमलापतिं च
hariṁ murāriṁ pravadaṁti keśavaṁ prītyā jitaṁ mādhavameva cānye śrīnārasiṁhaṁ kamalekṣaṇaṁ taṁ goviṁdamekaṁ kamalāpatiṁ ca
Some called him Hari, some Murari; others, out of love, called him victorious Keshava or Madhava; still others called him glorious Narasimha, lotus-eyed, the one Govinda, lord of Kamala.
Verse 29 (padma.2.74.29)
कृष्णं शरण्यं शरणं जपंति रामं च जप्यैः परिपूजयंति । दंडप्रणामैः प्रणमंति विष्णुं तद्ध्यानयुक्ताः परवैष्णवास्ते
kṛṣṇaṁ śaraṇyaṁ śaraṇaṁ japaṁti rāmaṁ ca japyaiḥ paripūjayaṁti daṁḍapraṇāmaiḥ praṇamaṁti viṣṇuṁ taddhyānayuktāḥ paravaiṣṇavāste
They recited 'Krishna, the refuge, the shelter,' and worshipped Rama with recitation of his name; they bowed to Vishnu in full prostration - such were those supreme Vaishnavas, wholly absorbed in meditation on him.
