Bhumi Khanda · Chapter 75
The Earth Becomes Like Heaven
Verse 1 (padma.2.75.1)
sukarmovāca- viṣṇuṁ kṛṣṇaṁ hariṁ rāmaṁ mukuṁdaṁ madhusūdanam nārāyaṇaṁ viṣṇurūpaṁ nārasiṁhaṁ tamacyutam
Sukarma said: "Vishnu, Krishna, Hari, Rama, Mukunda, Madhusudana, Narayana in the form of Vishnu, Narasimha, the unfallen Achyuta -"
Verse 2 (padma.2.75.2)
keśavaṁ padmanābhaṁ ca vāsudevaṁ ca vāmanam vārāhaṁ kamaṭhaṁ matsyaṁ hṛṣīkeśaṁ surādhipam
"- Keshava, Padmanabha, Vasudeva, Vamana, Varaha, the tortoise, Matsya, Hrishikesha, lord of the gods -"
Verse 3 (padma.2.75.3)
viśveśaṁ viśvarūpaṁ ca anaṁtamanaghaṁ śucim puruṣaṁ puṣkarākṣaṁ ca śrīdharaṁ śrīpatiṁ harim
"- Vishvesha, Vishvarupa, the endless one, the sinless, the pure, Purusha, Pushkaraksha, Shridhara, Shripati, Hari -"
Verse 4 (padma.2.75.4)
śrīnivāsaṁ pītavāsaṁ mādhavaṁ mokṣadaṁ prabhum ityevaṁ hi samuccāraṁ nāmabhirmānavāḥ sadā
"- Shrinivasa, the one clad in yellow, Madhava, the Lord who grants liberation - by these names men always called upon him."
Verse 5 (padma.2.75.5)
prakurvaṁti narāḥ sarve bālavṛddhāḥ kumārikāḥ striyo hariṁ sugāyaṁti gṛhakarmaratāḥ sadā
All people did this - children, the old, and young girls alike; women, ever engaged in household work, sang beautifully of Hari.
Verse 6 (padma.2.75.6)
āsane śayane yāne dhyāne vacasi mādhavam krīḍamānāstathā bālā goviṁdaṁ praṇamaṁti te
Sitting, lying down, travelling, meditating, or speaking, they thought of Madhava; even children at play bowed to Govinda.
Verse 7 (padma.2.75.7)
divārātrau sumadhuraṁ bruvaṁti harināma ca viṣṇūccāro hi sarvatra śrūyate dvijasattama
Day and night they sweetly uttered the name of Hari; everywhere, O best of the twice-born, the utterance of 'Vishnu' was heard.
Verse 8 (padma.2.75.8)
vaiṣṇavena prabhāveṇa martyā vartaṁti bhūtale prāsādakalaśāgreṣu devatāyataneṣu ca
By the power of devotion to Vishnu, mortals lived upon the earth; on the pinnacles of palace-domes and in the temples of the gods -
Verse 9 (padma.2.75.9)
yathā sūryasya biṁbāni tathā cakrāṇi bhāṁti ca vaikuṁṭhe dṛśyate bhāvastadbhāvaṁ jagatītale
- just as the sun's orb shines, so the discus-emblems shone; the very spirit seen in Vaikuntha was now seen upon the earth.
Verse 10 (padma.2.75.10)
tena rājñā kṛtaṁ vipra puṇyaṁ cāpi mahātmanā viṣṇulokasya samatāṁ tathānītaṁ mahītalam
By that great-souled king, O brahmin, this merit was accomplished, and the earth was brought to equal the very world of Vishnu.
Verse 11 (padma.2.75.11)
nahuṣasyāpi putreṇa vaiṣṇavena yayātinā ubhayorlokayorbhāvamekībhūtaṁ mahītalam
By Nahusha's son, the Vaishnava Yayati, the very character of both worlds became one upon this earth.
Verse 12 (padma.2.75.12)
bhūtalasyāpi viṣṇośca aṁtaraṁ naiva dṛśyate viṣṇūccāraṁ tu vaikuṁṭhe yathā kurvaṁti vaiṣṇavāḥ
No difference at all was seen between the earth and Vishnu's own world; just as the Vaishnavas utter the name 'Vishnu' in Vaikuntha -
Verse 13 (padma.2.75.13)
bhūtale tādṛśoccāraṁ prakurvaṁti ca mānavāḥ ubhayorlokayorvipra ekabhāvaḥ pradṛśyate
- so men made that very same utterance upon the earth; O brahmin, in both worlds a single spirit was seen.
Verse 14 (padma.2.75.14)
jarārogabhayaṁ nāsti mṛtyuhīnā narā babhuḥ dānabhogaprabhāvaśca adhiko dṛśyate bhuvi
There was no fear of old age or disease; men became free from death; the power of gift-giving and enjoyment appeared even greater upon the earth.
Verse 15 (padma.2.75.15)
putrāṇāṁ tu sukhaṁ puṇyamadhikaṁ pautrajaṁ narāḥ prabhuṁjaṁti sukhenāpi mānavā bhuvi sattama
O worthy one, men on this earth enjoyed the happiness and merit of sons, and even more that of grandsons, with ease.
Verse 16 (padma.2.75.16)
viṣṇoḥ prasādadānena upadeśena tasya ca sarvavyādhivinirmuktā mānavā vaiṣṇavāḥ sadā
By Vishnu's grace and gift, and through his teaching, men, ever remaining Vaishnavas, were freed from every disease.
Verse 17 (padma.2.75.17)
svargalokaprabhāvo hi kṛto rājñā mahītale paṁcaviṁśapramāṇena varṣāṇi nṛpasattama
O best of kings, that king thus established the very glory of the heavenly world upon the earth for a span of twenty-five years.
Verse 18 (padma.2.75.18)
gadairhīnā narāḥ sarve jñānadhyānaparāyaṇāḥ yajñadānaparāḥ sarve dayābhāvāśca mānavāḥ
All men, free from disease, were devoted to knowledge and meditation; all were absorbed in sacrifice and gift-giving, and filled with compassion.
Verse 19 (padma.2.75.19)
upakāraratāḥ puṇyā dhanyāste kīrtibhājanāḥ sarve dharmaparā vipra viṣṇudhyānaparāyaṇāḥ
Delighting in helping others, meritorious, blessed, and possessed of fame - all, O brahmin, were devoted to dharma and absorbed in meditation on Vishnu.
Verse 20 (padma.2.75.20)
rājñā tenopadiṣṭāste saṁjātā vaiṣṇavā bhuvi viṣṇuruvāca- śrūyatāṁ nṛpaśārdūla caritraṁ tasya bhūpateḥ
Taught by that king, they became Vaishnavas upon this earth. Vishnu said: "Hear, O tiger among kings, the story of that lord of the earth."
Verse 21 (padma.2.75.21)
sarvadharmaparo nityaṁ viṣṇubhaktaśca nāhuṣiḥ abdānāṁ tatra lakṣaṁ hi tasyāpyevaṁ gataṁ bhuvi
Ever devoted to all dharma and a devotee of Vishnu, the son of Nahusha ruled thus; for him a hundred thousand years passed on this earth.
Verse 22 (padma.2.75.22)
nūtano dṛśyate kāyaḥ paṁcaviṁśābdiko yathā paṁcaviṁśābdiko bhāti rūpeṇa vayasā tadā
His body always appeared new, as if twenty-five years old; in form and age he ever shone as one of twenty-five years.
Verse 23 (padma.2.75.23)
prabalaḥ prauḍhisaṁpannaḥ prasādāttasya cakriṇaḥ mānuṣā bhuvamāsthāya yamaṁ naiva prayāṁti te
By the grace of him who bears the discus, he remained powerful and mature; men, dwelling firmly on this earth, did not go to Yama at all.
Verse 24 (padma.2.75.24)
rāgadveṣavinirmuktāḥ kleśapāśavivarjitāḥ sukhino dānapuṇyaiśca sarvadharmaparāyaṇāḥ
Free from attachment and aversion, released from the bonds of affliction, made happy through gift and merit, and devoted wholly to dharma -
Verse 25 (padma.2.75.25)
vistāraṁ tejanāḥ sarve saṁtatyāpi gatā nṛpa yathā dūrvāvaṭāścaiva vistāraṁ yāṁti bhūtale
- all, O king, spread and multiplied through their offspring, just as clumps of durva grass spread across the earth.
Verse 26 (padma.2.75.26)
yathā te mānavāḥ sarve putrapautraiḥ pravistṛtāḥ mṛtyudoṣavihīnāste ciraṁ jīvaṁti vai janāḥ
Thus all those men, multiplying through sons and grandsons, and free from the fault of death, lived for a very long time.
Verse 27 (padma.2.75.27)
sthirakāyāśca sukhino jarārogavivarjitāḥ paṁcaviṁśābdikāḥ sarve narā dṛśyaṁti bhūtale
Steady in body, happy, free from old age and disease, all men appeared upon this earth as if they were twenty-five years old.
Verse 28 (padma.2.75.28)
satyācāraparāḥ sarve viṣṇudhyānaparāyaṇāḥ evaṁ sarve ca martyāste prasādāttasya cakriṇaḥ
All were devoted to truthful conduct and absorbed in meditation on Vishnu; thus all these mortals, by the grace of him who bears the discus -
Verse 29 (padma.2.75.29)
saṁjātā mānavāḥ sarve dānabhogaparāyaṇāḥ mṛto na śrūyate loke martyaḥ kopi narottama
- became devoted to gift-giving and enjoyment; O best of men, in that world no mortal at all was ever heard to have died.
Verse 30 (padma.2.75.30)
śokaṁ naiva prapaśyaṁti doṣaṁ naiva prayāṁti te yadrūpaṁ svargalokasya tadrūpaṁ bhūtalasya ca
They never beheld sorrow, nor ever fell into fault; whatever form the heavenly world possessed, that very form the earth possessed too.
Verse 31 (padma.2.75.31)
saṁjātaṁ mānavaśreṣṭha prasādāttasya cakriṇaḥ vibhraṣṭā yamadūtāste viṣṇudūtaiśca tāḍitāḥ
O best of men, all this came to be by the grace of him who bears the discus. Yama's messengers, struck and driven back by Vishnu's messengers -
Verse 32 (padma.2.75.32)
rudamānā gatāḥ sarve dharmarājaṁ parasparam tatsarvaṁ kathitaṁ dūtaiśceṣṭitaṁ bhūpatestu taiḥ
- all went away weeping, one and another, to Dharmaraja; those messengers reported to him the king's whole conduct.
Verse 33 (padma.2.75.33)
amṛtyubhūtalaṁ jātaṁ dānabhogena bhāskare nahuṣasyātmajenāpi kṛtaṁ devayayātinā
As long as the sun shines, the earth had become free of death through gift-giving and enjoyment - this was accomplished by Nahusha's son, the godlike Yayati.
Verse 34 (padma.2.75.34)
viṣṇubhaktena puṇyena svargarūpaṁ pradarśitam evamākarṇitaṁ sarvaṁ dharmarājena vai tadā
Through his merit as a devotee of Vishnu, the very form of heaven was displayed upon the earth. Dharmaraja then heard all of this.
Verse 35 (padma.2.75.35)
dharmarājastadā tatra dūtebhyaḥ śrutavistaraḥ ciṁtayāmāsa sarvārthaṁ śrutvaivaṁnṛpaceṣṭitam
Dharmaraja, having thus heard the full account from the messengers, and having learned of the king's conduct, pondered over the whole matter.
