Verse 1 (padma.2.76.1)

सुकर्मोवाच- सौरिर्दूतैस्तथा सर्वैः सह स्वर्गं जगाम सः । द्रष्टुं तत्र सहस्राक्षं देववृंदैः समावृतम्

sukarmovāca- saurirdūtaistathā sarvaiḥ saha svargaṁ jagāma saḥ draṣṭuṁ tatra sahasrākṣaṁ devavṛṁdaiḥ samāvṛtam

Sukarma said: "Sauri [Yama] then went to heaven together with all his messengers, to see there the thousand-eyed Indra, surrounded by hosts of gods."

Verse 2 (padma.2.76.2)

धर्मराजं समायांतं ददर्श सुरराट्तदा । समुत्थाय त्वरायुक्तो दत्वा चार्घमनुत्तमम्

dharmarājaṁ samāyāṁtaṁ dadarśa surarāṭtadā samutthāya tvarāyukto datvā cārghamanuttamam

The king of gods then saw Dharmaraja approaching; rising at once, having offered him the finest welcome -

Verse 3 (padma.2.76.3)

पप्रच्छागमनं तस्य कथयस्व ममाग्रतः । समाकर्ण्य महद्वाक्यं देवराजस्य भाषितम्

papracchāgamanaṁ tasya kathayasva mamāgrataḥ samākarṇya mahadvākyaṁ devarājasya bhāṣitam

- he asked the reason for his coming: "Tell me, before me." Having heard this great question from the king of gods -

Verse 4 (padma.2.76.4)

धर्मराजोऽब्रवीत्सर्वं ययातेश्चरितं महत् । धर्मराज उवाच- श्रूयतां देवदेवेश यस्मादागमनं मम

dharmarājo'bravītsarvaṁ yayāteścaritaṁ mahat dharmarāja uvāca- śrūyatāṁ devadeveśa yasmādāgamanaṁ mama

Dharmaraja related the whole great story of Yayati's conduct. Dharmaraja said: "Hear, O lord of the gods, why I have come."

Verse 5 (padma.2.76.5)

कथयाम्यहमत्रापि येनाहमागतस्तव । नहुषस्यात्मजेनापि वैष्णवेन महात्मना

kathayāmyahamatrāpi yenāhamāgatastava nahuṣasyātmajenāpi vaiṣṇavena mahātmanā

"I shall tell you here too the reason I have come to you: because of the great-souled Vaishnava, the son of Nahusha -"

Verse 6 (padma.2.76.6)

वैष्णवाश्च कृता मर्त्या ये वसंति महीतले । वैकुंठस्य समं रूपं मर्त्यलोकस्य वै कृतम्

vaiṣṇavāśca kṛtā martyā ye vasaṁti mahītale vaikuṁṭhasya samaṁ rūpaṁ martyalokasya vai kṛtam

"- the mortals who dwell upon this earth have been made Vaishnavas; the mortal world has been given a form equal to Vaikuntha."

Verse 7 (padma.2.76.7)

अमरा मानवा जाता जरारोगविवर्जिताः । पापमेव न कुर्वंति असत्यं न वदंति ते

amarā mānavā jātā jarārogavivarjitāḥ pāpameva na kurvaṁti asatyaṁ na vadaṁti te

"Men have become as if immortal, free from old age and disease; they commit no sin at all, and speak no falsehood."

Verse 8 (padma.2.76.8)

कामक्रोधविहीनास्ते लोभमोहविवर्जिताः । दानशीला महात्मानः सर्वे धर्मपरायणाः

kāmakrodhavihīnāste lobhamohavivarjitāḥ dānaśīlā mahātmānaḥ sarve dharmaparāyaṇāḥ

"Free from desire and anger, free from greed and delusion, generous, great-souled - all are devoted to dharma."

Verse 9 (padma.2.76.9)

सर्वधर्मैः समर्चंति नारायणमनामयम् । तेन वैष्णवधर्मेण मानवा जगतीतले

sarvadharmaiḥ samarcaṁti nārāyaṇamanāmayam tena vaiṣṇavadharmeṇa mānavā jagatītale

"They worship the unafflicted Narayana through every form of dharma; through that Vaishnava dharma, the men of this earth -"

Verse 10 (padma.2.76.10)

निरामया वीतशोकाः सर्वे च स्थिरयौवनाः । दूर्वा वटा यथा देव विस्तारं यांति भूतले

nirāmayā vītaśokāḥ sarve ca sthirayauvanāḥ dūrvā vaṭā yathā deva vistāraṁ yāṁti bhūtale

"- have become free from illness, free from sorrow, all of unchanging youth; O god, just as durva grass and banyan roots spread across the earth -"

Verse 11 (padma.2.76.11)

तथा ते विस्तरं प्राप्ताः पुत्रपौत्रैः प्रपौत्रकैः । तेषां पुत्रैः प्रपौत्रैश्च वंशाद्वंशांतरं गताः

tathā te vistaraṁ prāptāḥ putrapautraiḥ prapautrakaiḥ teṣāṁ putraiḥ prapautraiśca vaṁśādvaṁśāṁtaraṁ gatāḥ

"- so they too have spread through sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons; through their descendants they have passed on from lineage to lineage."

Verse 12 (padma.2.76.12)

एवं हि वैष्णवः सर्वो जरामृत्युविवर्जितः । मर्त्यलोकः कृतस्तेन नहुषस्यात्मजेन वै

evaṁ hi vaiṣṇavaḥ sarvo jarāmṛtyuvivarjitaḥ martyalokaḥ kṛtastena nahuṣasyātmajena vai

"Thus the entire mortal world has been made free from old age and death by that son of Nahusha."

Verse 13 (padma.2.76.13)

पदभ्रष्टोस्मि संजातो व्यापारेण विवर्जितः । एतत्सर्वं समाख्यातं मम कर्मविनाशनम्

padabhraṣṭosmi saṁjāto vyāpāreṇa vivarjitaḥ etatsarvaṁ samākhyātaṁ mama karmavināśanam

"I have been deprived of my very office, stripped of my function; all this I have related to you - the destruction of my own work."

Verse 14 (padma.2.76.14)

एवं ज्ञात्वा सहस्राक्ष लोकस्यास्य हितं कुरु । एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यथापृष्टोस्मि वै त्वया

evaṁ jñātvā sahasrākṣa lokasyāsya hitaṁ kuru etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ yathāpṛṣṭosmi vai tvayā

"Knowing this, O thousand-eyed one, do what is good for this world. All that you asked of me, I have now told you."

Verse 15 (padma.2.76.15)

एतस्मात्कारणादिंद्र आगतस्तव सन्निधौ । इंद्र उवाच- पूर्वमेव मया दूत आगमाय महात्मनः

etasmātkāraṇādiṁdra āgatastava sannidhau iṁdra uvāca- pūrvameva mayā dūta āgamāya mahātmanaḥ

"For this very reason, O Indra, I have come into your presence." Indra said: "O lord of Dharma, I myself had already sent a messenger, earlier -"

Verse 16 (padma.2.76.16)

प्रेषितो धर्मराजेंद्र दूतेनास्यापि भाषितम् । नाहं स्वर्गसुखस्यार्थी नागमिष्ये दिवं पुनः

preṣito dharmarājeṁdra dūtenāsyāpi bhāṣitam nāhaṁ svargasukhasyārthī nāgamiṣye divaṁ punaḥ

"- to summon that great soul; and this is what that messenger reported he had said: 'I do not desire the pleasure of heaven, I will not go to the sky again.'"

Verse 17 (padma.2.76.17)

स्वर्गरूपं करिष्यामि सर्वं तद्भूमिमंडलम् । इत्याचचक्षे भूपालः प्रजापाल्यं करोति सः

svargarūpaṁ kariṣyāmi sarvaṁ tadbhūmimaṁḍalam ityācacakṣe bhūpālaḥ prajāpālyaṁ karoti saḥ

"'I shall make this whole circle of the earth into the very form of heaven' - so speaks that protector of kings, and indeed he protects his people well."

Verse 18 (padma.2.76.18)

तस्य धर्मप्रभावेण भीतस्तिष्ठामि सर्वदा । धर्म उवाच- येनकेनाप्युपायेन तमानय सुभूपतिम्

tasya dharmaprabhāveṇa bhītastiṣṭhāmi sarvadā dharma uvāca- yenakenāpyupāyena tamānaya subhūpatim

"By the power of his dharma I remain fearful always." Dharma [Yama] said: "By whatever means, bring that good king here -"

Verse 19 (padma.2.76.19)

देवराज महाभाग यदीच्छसि मम प्रियम् । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य धर्मस्यापि सुराधिपः

devarāja mahābhāga yadīcchasi mama priyam ityākarṇya vacastasya dharmasyāpi surādhipaḥ

"- O great and fortunate king of the gods, if you wish for what pleases me." Having heard these words of Dharma, that lord of the gods -

Verse 20 (padma.2.76.20)

चिंतयामास मेधावी सर्वतत्वेन भूपते । कामदेवं समाहूय गंधर्वांश्च पुरंदरः

ciṁtayāmāsa medhāvī sarvatatvena bhūpate kāmadevaṁ samāhūya gaṁdharvāṁśca puraṁdaraḥ

"- the wise Purandara, O king, pondered the whole matter with full understanding; he summoned Kamadeva and the Gandharvas."

Verse 21 (padma.2.76.21)

मकरंदं रतिं देव आनिनाय महामनाः । तथा कुरुत वै यूयं यथाऽगच्छति भूपतिः

makaraṁdaṁ ratiṁ deva ānināya mahāmanāḥ tathā kuruta vai yūyaṁ yathā'gacchati bhūpatiḥ

"That great-minded god also brought Makaranda and Rati. 'Do this, all of you, in such a way that the king comes here -'"

Verse 22 (padma.2.76.22)

यूयं गच्छन्तु भूर्लोकं मयादिष्टा न संशयः । काम उवाच- युवयोस्तु प्रियं पुण्यं करिष्यामि न संशयः

yūyaṁ gacchantu bhūrlokaṁ mayādiṣṭā na saṁśayaḥ kāma uvāca- yuvayostu priyaṁ puṇyaṁ kariṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ

"'Go, all of you, to the mortal world; I have commanded this, without doubt.'" Kama said: "I shall surely do what pleases and benefits you both -"

Verse 23 (padma.2.76.23)

राजानं पश्य मां चैव स्थितं चैव समा युधि । तथेत्युक्त्वा गताः सर्वे यत्र राजा स नाहुषिः

rājānaṁ paśya māṁ caiva sthitaṁ caiva samā yudhi tathetyuktvā gatāḥ sarve yatra rājā sa nāhuṣiḥ

"'- watch me myself, standing equal even to the king in this venture.'" Saying "so be it," they all went to where the son of Nahusha, the king, was.

Verse 24 (padma.2.76.24)

नटरूपेण ते सर्वे कामाद्याः कर्मणा द्विज । आशीर्भिरभिनंद्यैव ते च ऊचुः सुनाटकम्

naṭarūpeṇa te sarve kāmādyāḥ karmaṇā dvija āśīrbhirabhinaṁdyaiva te ca ūcuḥ sunāṭakam

In the guise of actors, O brahmin, Kama and the others, through their craft, having honored the king with blessings, staged a fine drama.

Verse 25 (padma.2.76.25)

तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा ययातिः पृथिवीपतिः । सभां चकार मेधावी देवरूपां सुपंडितैः

teṣāṁ tadvacanaṁ śrutvā yayātiḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ sabhāṁ cakāra medhāvī devarūpāṁ supaṁḍitaiḥ

Hearing their words, the wise King Yayati had a heavenly assembly-hall prepared, together with learned men.

Verse 26 (padma.2.76.26)

समायातः स्वयं भूपो ज्ञानविज्ञानकोविदः । तेषां तु नाटकं राजा पश्यमानः स नाहुषिः

samāyātaḥ svayaṁ bhūpo jñānavijñānakovidaḥ teṣāṁ tu nāṭakaṁ rājā paśyamānaḥ sa nāhuṣiḥ

The king himself, skilled in knowledge and discernment, came there; watching their drama, that son of Nahusha -

Verse 27 (padma.2.76.27)

चरितं वामनस्यापि उत्पत्तिं विप्ररूपिणः । रूपेणाप्रतिमा लोके सुस्वरं गीतमुत्तमम्

caritaṁ vāmanasyāpi utpattiṁ viprarūpiṇaḥ rūpeṇāpratimā loke susvaraṁ gītamuttamam

- saw enacted the story of Vamana, his birth in the guise of a brahmin; and a most sweet, excellent song, of unmatched beauty in the world -

Verse 28 (padma.2.76.28)

गायमाना जरा राजन्नार्यारूपेण वै तदा । तस्या गीतविलासेन हास्येन ललितेन च

gāyamānā jarā rājannāryārūpeṇa vai tadā tasyā gītavilāsena hāsyena lalitena ca

- was then sung, O king, by Old Age herself, in the disguise of a woman; by her display of song, her laughter, and her charm -

Verse 29 (padma.2.76.29)

मधुरालापतस्तस्य कंदर्पस्य च मायया । मोहितस्तेन भावेन दिव्येन चरितेन च

madhurālāpatastasya kaṁdarpasya ca māyayā mohitastena bhāvena divyena caritena ca

- by her sweet speech, and by the illusion of Kandarpa, the king was bewitched by that divine feeling and performance.

Verse 30 (padma.2.76.30)

बलेश्चैव यथारूपं विंध्यावल्या यथा पुरा । वामनस्य यथारूपं चक्रे मारोथ तादृशम्

baleścaiva yathārūpaṁ viṁdhyāvalyā yathā purā vāmanasya yathārūpaṁ cakre mārotha tādṛśam

Just as Bali was once bewitched by the form of Vindhyavali, so did Mara [Kama] then fashion a form like that of Vamana.

Verse 31 (padma.2.76.31)

सूत्रधारः स्वयं कामो वसंतः पारिपार्श्वकः । नटीवेषधरा जाता सा रतिर्हृष्टवल्लभा

sūtradhāraḥ svayaṁ kāmo vasaṁtaḥ pāripārśvakaḥ naṭīveṣadharā jātā sā ratirhṛṣṭavallabhā

Kama himself became the stage-director, with Vasanta as his companion; delighted Rati, taking the guise of an actress, became his beloved.

Verse 32 (padma.2.76.32)

नेपथ्यांतश्चरी राजन्सा तस्मिन्नृत्यकर्मणि । मकरंदो महाप्राज्ञः क्षोभयामास भूपतिम्

nepathyāṁtaścarī rājansā tasminnṛtyakarmaṇi makaraṁdo mahāprājñaḥ kṣobhayāmāsa bhūpatim

O king, she moved about behind the curtain in that dance-performance; the wise Makaranda stirred the king's mind.

Verse 33 (padma.2.76.33)

यथायथा पश्यति नृत्यमुत्तमं गीतं समाकर्णति स क्षितीशः । तथातथा मोहितवान्स भूपतिं नटीप्रणीतेन महानुभावः

yathāyathā paśyati nṛtyamuttamaṁ gītaṁ samākarṇati sa kṣitīśaḥ tathātathā mohitavānsa bhūpatiṁ naṭīpraṇītena mahānubhāvaḥ

The more that lord of the earth watched the excellent dance and listened to the song, the more that noble king grew bewitched by what the actress presented.
