Yayati Exchanges Old Age for Puru's Youth
Verse 1 (padma.2.78.1)
ययातिरुवाच- एकेन गृह्यतां पुत्रा जरा मे दुःखदायिनी । धीरेण भवतां मध्ये तारुण्यं मम दीयताम्
yayātiruvāca- ekena gṛhyatāṁ putrā jarā me duḥkhadāyinī dhīreṇa bhavatāṁ madhye tāruṇyaṁ mama dīyatām
Yayati said: "Let one of you, my sons, take upon himself this old age of mine, which brings me such sorrow; let some courageous one among you give me his youth in exchange."
Verse 2 (padma.2.78.2)
स्वकीयं हि महाभागाः स्वरूपमिदमुत्तमम् । संतप्तं मानसं मेद्य स्त्रियां सक्तं सुचंचलम्
svakīyaṁ hi mahābhāgāḥ svarūpamidamuttamam saṁtaptaṁ mānasaṁ medya striyāṁ saktaṁ sucaṁcalam
"This excellent form is your very own, O most fortunate ones. My mind today is tormented, attached to a woman, and utterly restless."
Verse 3 (padma.2.78.3)
भाजनस्था यथा आप आवर्त्तयति पावकः । तथा मे मानसं पुत्राः कामानलसुचालितम्
bhājanasthā yathā āpa āvarttayati pāvakaḥ tathā me mānasaṁ putrāḥ kāmānalasucālitam
"Just as fire makes the water in a vessel churn, so, my sons, is my mind stirred by the fire of desire."
Verse 4 (padma.2.78.4)
एको गृह्णातु मे पुत्रा जरां दुःखप्रदायिनीम् । स्वकं ददातु तारुण्यं यथाकामं चराम्यहम्
eko gṛhṇātu me putrā jarāṁ duḥkhapradāyinīm svakaṁ dadātu tāruṇyaṁ yathākāmaṁ carāmyaham
"Let one of you, my sons, take this sorrow-bringing old age of mine, and give me his own youth, so that I may wander as I please."
Verse 5 (padma.2.78.5)
यो मे जरापसरणं करिष्यति सुतोत्तमः । स च मे भोक्ष्यते राज्यं धनुर्वंशं धरिष्यति
yo me jarāpasaraṇaṁ kariṣyati sutottamaḥ sa ca me bhokṣyate rājyaṁ dhanurvaṁśaṁ dhariṣyati
"Whichever excellent son removes my old age, he alone shall enjoy my kingdom and uphold the dynasty of the bow."
Verse 6 (padma.2.78.6)
तस्य सौख्यं सुसंपत्तिर्धनं धान्यं भविष्यति । विपुला संततिस्तस्य यशः कीर्तिर्भविष्यति
tasya saukhyaṁ susaṁpattirdhanaṁ dhānyaṁ bhaviṣyati vipulā saṁtatistasya yaśaḥ kīrtirbhaviṣyati
"His shall be happiness and great prosperity, wealth and grain; his progeny shall be abundant, and his fame and renown shall spread."
Verse 7 (padma.2.78.7)
पुत्रा ऊचुः- भवान्धर्मपरो राजन्प्रजाः सत्येन पालकः । कस्मात्ते हीदृशो भावो जातः प्रकृतिचापलः
putrā ūcuḥ- bhavāndharmaparo rājanprajāḥ satyena pālakaḥ kasmātte hīdṛśo bhāvo jātaḥ prakṛticāpalaḥ
The sons said: "You, O king, are devoted to dharma, protector of your people through truth; from where has this fickleness arisen in your nature?"
Verse 8 (padma.2.78.8)
राजोवाच- आगता नर्तकाः पूर्वं पुरं मे हि प्रनर्तकाः । तेभ्यो मे कामसंमोहे जातो मोहश्च ईदृशः
rājovāca- āgatā nartakāḥ pūrvaṁ puraṁ me hi pranartakāḥ tebhyo me kāmasaṁmohe jāto mohaśca īdṛśaḥ
The king said: "Dancers came earlier to my city, fine performers; from them arose in me this delusion of desire, and such a bewilderment."
Verse 9 (padma.2.78.9)
जरया व्यापितः कायो मन्मथाविष्टमानसः । संबभूव सुतश्रेष्ठाः कामेनाकुलव्याकुलः
jarayā vyāpitaḥ kāyo manmathāviṣṭamānasaḥ saṁbabhūva sutaśreṣṭhāḥ kāmenākulavyākulaḥ
"O best of sons, my body pervaded by old age, my mind possessed by Manmatha, I have become utterly agitated by desire."
Verse 10 (padma.2.78.10)
काचिद्दृष्टा मया नारी दिव्यरूपा वरानना । मया संभाषिता पुत्राः किंचिन्नोवाच मे सती
kāciddṛṣṭā mayā nārī divyarūpā varānanā mayā saṁbhāṣitā putrāḥ kiṁcinnovāca me satī
"I saw a woman of divine form, most lovely; I spoke to her, my sons, but that virtuous woman said nothing to me at all."
Verse 11 (padma.2.78.11)
विशालानाम तस्याश्च सखी चारुविचक्षणा । सा मामाह शुभं वाक्यं मम सौख्यप्रदायकम्
viśālānāma tasyāśca sakhī cāruvicakṣaṇā sā māmāha śubhaṁ vākyaṁ mama saukhyapradāyakam
"Her friend, named Vishala, clever and lovely, spoke to me an auspicious word, one that promised me happiness."
Verse 12 (padma.2.78.12)
जराहीनो यदा स्यास्त्वं तदा ते सुप्रिया भवेत् । एवमंगीकृतं वाक्यं तयोक्तं गृहमागतः
jarāhīno yadā syāstvaṁ tadā te supriyā bhavet evamaṁgīkṛtaṁ vākyaṁ tayoktaṁ gṛhamāgataḥ
"'When you become free from old age, then you shall become dear to her' - having accepted this word of hers, I returned home."
Verse 13 (padma.2.78.13)
मया जरापनोदार्थं तदेवं समुदाहृतम् । एवं ज्ञात्वा प्रकर्तव्यं मत्सुखं हि सुपुत्रकाः
mayā jarāpanodārthaṁ tadevaṁ samudāhṛtam evaṁ jñātvā prakartavyaṁ matsukhaṁ hi suputrakāḥ
"I have said all this only for the sake of removing my old age. Knowing this, my sons, you must act now for my happiness."
Verse 14 (padma.2.78.14)
तुरुरुवाच- शरीरं प्राप्यते पुत्रैः पितुर्मातुः प्रसादतः । धर्मश्च क्रियते राजञ्शरीरेण विपश्चिता
tururuvāca- śarīraṁ prāpyate putraiḥ piturmātuḥ prasādataḥ dharmaśca kriyate rājañśarīreṇa vipaścitā
Turu said: "The body is obtained by sons through the grace of father and mother; and it is with that very body, O king, that a wise man practices dharma."
Verse 15 (padma.2.78.15)
पित्रोः शुश्रूषणं कार्यं पुत्रैश्चापि विशेषतः । न च यौवनदानस्य कालोऽयं मे नराधिप
pitroḥ śuśrūṣaṇaṁ kāryaṁ putraiścāpi viśeṣataḥ na ca yauvanadānasya kālo'yaṁ me narādhipa
"Sons must especially render service to their parents; but, O lord of men, this is not the time for the gift of youth."
Verse 16 (padma.2.78.16)
प्रथमे वयसि भोक्तव्यं विषयं मानवैर्नृप । इदानीं तन्न कालोयं वर्तते तव सांप्रतम्
prathame vayasi bhoktavyaṁ viṣayaṁ mānavairnṛpa idānīṁ tanna kāloyaṁ vartate tava sāṁpratam
"In the first stage of life, O king, men ought to enjoy sense-pleasures; that time has now passed for you."
Verse 17 (padma.2.78.17)
जरां तात प्रदत्वा वै पुत्रे तात महद्गताम् । पश्चात्सुखं प्रभोक्तव्यं न तु स्यात्तव जीवितम्
jarāṁ tāta pradatvā vai putre tāta mahadgatām paścātsukhaṁ prabhoktavyaṁ na tu syāttava jīvitam
"Father, having given your great old age to a son, and enjoying happiness afterward, that life would then no longer truly be your own."
Verse 18 (padma.2.78.18)
तस्माद्वाक्यं महाराज करिष्ये नैव ते पुनः । एवमाभाषत नृपं तुरुर्ज्येष्ठसुतस्तदा
tasmādvākyaṁ mahārāja kariṣye naiva te punaḥ evamābhāṣata nṛpaṁ tururjyeṣṭhasutastadā
"Therefore, O great king, I shall never do as you say." Thus spoke Turu, the eldest son, to the king.
Verse 19 (padma.2.78.19)
तुरोर्वाक्यं तु तच्छ्रुत्वा क्रुद्धो राजा बभूव सः । तुरुं शशाप धर्मात्मा क्रोधेनारुणलोचनः
turorvākyaṁ tu tacchrutvā kruddho rājā babhūva saḥ turuṁ śaśāpa dharmātmā krodhenāruṇalocanaḥ
Having heard Turu's words, the king grew enraged; that righteous king, his eyes red with anger, cursed Turu.
Verse 20 (padma.2.78.20)
अपध्वस्तस्त्वयाऽदेशो ममायं पापचेतन । तस्मात्पापी भव स्वत्वं सर्वधर्मबहिष्कृतः
apadhvastastvayā'deśo mamāyaṁ pāpacetana tasmātpāpī bhava svatvaṁ sarvadharmabahiṣkṛtaḥ
"'You have spurned this command of mine, O evil-minded one; therefore become sinful yourself, cast out from all dharma.'"
Verse 21 (padma.2.78.21)
शिखया त्वं विहीनश्च वेदशास्त्रविवर्जितः । सर्वाचारविहीनस्त्वं भविष्यसि न संशयः
śikhayā tvaṁ vihīnaśca vedaśāstravivarjitaḥ sarvācāravihīnastvaṁ bhaviṣyasi na saṁśayaḥ
"'You shall be without the sacred tuft, deprived of Vedic learning; without doubt you shall become devoid of all proper conduct.'"
Verse 22 (padma.2.78.22)
ब्रह्मघ्नस्त्वं देवदुष्टः सुरापः सत्यवर्जितः । चंडकर्मप्रकर्ता त्वं भविष्यसि नराधमः
brahmaghnastvaṁ devaduṣṭaḥ surāpaḥ satyavarjitaḥ caṁḍakarmaprakartā tvaṁ bhaviṣyasi narādhamaḥ
"'You shall become a slayer of brahmins, hateful to the gods, a drinker of liquor, devoid of truth - a doer of savage deeds, the vilest of men.'"
Verse 23 (padma.2.78.23)
सुरालीनः क्षुधी पापी गोघ्नश्च त्वं भविष्यसि । दुश्चर्मा मुक्तकच्छश्च ब्रह्मद्वेष्टा निराकृतिः
surālīnaḥ kṣudhī pāpī goghnaśca tvaṁ bhaviṣyasi duścarmā muktakacchaśca brahmadveṣṭā nirākṛtiḥ
"'You shall become given to drink, ever hungry, sinful, a slayer of cows; ill-clad, ungirded, hostile to brahmins, and ill-formed.'"
Verse 24 (padma.2.78.24)
परदाराभिगामी त्वं महाचंडः प्रलंपटः । सर्वभक्षश्च दुर्मेधाः सदात्वं च भविष्यसि
paradārābhigāmī tvaṁ mahācaṁḍaḥ pralaṁpaṭaḥ sarvabhakṣaśca durmedhāḥ sadātvaṁ ca bhaviṣyasi
"'You shall become a violator of others' wives, exceedingly fierce, wanton; ever an eater of anything, and of dull understanding.'"
Verse 25 (padma.2.78.25)
सगोत्रां रमसे नारीं सर्वधर्मप्रणाशकः । पुण्यज्ञानविहीनात्मा कुष्ठवांश्च भविष्यसि
sagotrāṁ ramase nārīṁ sarvadharmapraṇāśakaḥ puṇyajñānavihīnātmā kuṣṭhavāṁśca bhaviṣyasi
"'You shall take pleasure with women of your own lineage, a destroyer of all dharma; devoid of merit and knowledge, you shall become a leper.'"
Verse 26 (padma.2.78.26)
तव पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च भविष्यंति न संशयः । ईदृशाः सर्वपुण्यघ्ना म्लेच्छाः सुकलुषीकृताः
tava putrāśca pautrāśca bhaviṣyaṁti na saṁśayaḥ īdṛśāḥ sarvapuṇyaghnā mlecchāḥ sukaluṣīkṛtāḥ
"'Your sons and grandsons too shall without doubt be just such - destroyers of all merit, utterly defiled mlecchas.'"
Verse 27 (padma.2.78.27)
एवं तुरुं सुशप्त्वैव यदुं पुत्रमथाब्रवीत् । जरां वै धारयस्वेह भुंक्ष्व राज्यमकंटकम्
evaṁ turuṁ suśaptvaiva yaduṁ putramathābravīt jarāṁ vai dhārayasveha bhuṁkṣva rājyamakaṁṭakam
Having thus cursed Turu, he then said to his son Yadu: "Bear this old age here, and enjoy the kingdom free of thorns."
Verse 28 (padma.2.78.28)
बद्धाञ्जलिपुटो भूत्वा यदू राजानमब्रवीत् । यदुरुवाच- जराभारं न शक्नोमि वोढुं तात कृपां कुरु
baddhāñjalipuṭo bhūtvā yadū rājānamabravīt yaduruvāca- jarābhāraṁ na śaknomi voḍhuṁ tāta kṛpāṁ kuru
With joined palms, Yadu said to the king. Yadu said: "I am unable to bear the burden of old age, father; have mercy on me."
Verse 29 (padma.2.78.29)
शीतमध्वा कदन्नं च वयोतीताश्च योषितः । मनसः प्रातिकूल्यं च जरायाः पंचहेतवः
śītamadhvā kadannaṁ ca vayotītāśca yoṣitaḥ manasaḥ prātikūlyaṁ ca jarāyāḥ paṁcahetavaḥ
"Cold, a long journey, poor food, women past their youth, and the mind's own aversion - these are the five causes of old age."
Verse 30 (padma.2.78.30)
जरादुःखं न शक्नोमि नवे वयसि भूपते । कः समर्थो हि वै धर्तुं क्षमस्व त्वं ममाधुना
jarāduḥkhaṁ na śaknomi nave vayasi bhūpate kaḥ samartho hi vai dhartuṁ kṣamasva tvaṁ mamādhunā
"O king, in my fresh youth I am unable to bear the sorrow of old age. Who indeed is capable of bearing it? Forgive me now."
Verse 31 (padma.2.78.31)
यदुं क्रुद्धो महाराजः शशाप द्विजनंदन । राज्यार्हो न च ते वंशः कदाचिद्वै भविष्यति
yaduṁ kruddho mahārājaḥ śaśāpa dvijanaṁdana rājyārho na ca te vaṁśaḥ kadācidvai bhaviṣyati
O delight of the twice-born, the enraged great king cursed Yadu: "Your lineage shall never be fit to rule a kingdom."
Verse 32 (padma.2.78.32)
बलतेजः क्षमाहीनः क्षात्रधर्मविवर्जितः । भविष्यति न संदेहो मच्छासनपराङ्मुखः
balatejaḥ kṣamāhīnaḥ kṣātradharmavivarjitaḥ bhaviṣyati na saṁdeho macchāsanaparāṅmukhaḥ
"'Devoid of strength, vigor, and patience, deprived of the Kshatriya's duty, opposed to my command - without doubt, this shall be.'"
Verse 33 (padma.2.78.33)
यदुरुवाच- निर्दोषोहं महाराज कस्माच्छप्तस्त्वयाधुना । कृपां कुरुष्व दीनस्य प्रसादसुमुखो भव
yaduruvāca- nirdoṣohaṁ mahārāja kasmācchaptastvayādhunā kṛpāṁ kuruṣva dīnasya prasādasumukho bhava
Yadu said: "O great king, I am without fault - why then have you cursed me now? Have mercy on this wretched one; turn a gracious face toward me."
Verse 34 (padma.2.78.34)
राजोवाच- महादेवः कुले ते वै स्वांशेनापि हि पुत्रक । करिष्यति विसृष्टिं च तदा पूतं कुलं तव
rājovāca- mahādevaḥ kule te vai svāṁśenāpi hi putraka kariṣyati visṛṣṭiṁ ca tadā pūtaṁ kulaṁ tava
The king said: "My son, Mahadeva himself, through his own portion, shall be born in your lineage; then your family shall become pure."
Verse 35 (padma.2.78.35)
यदुरुवाच- अहं पुत्रो महाराज निर्दोषः शापितस्त्वया । अनुग्रहो दीयतां मे यदि मे वर्त्तते दया
yaduruvāca- ahaṁ putro mahārāja nirdoṣaḥ śāpitastvayā anugraho dīyatāṁ me yadi me varttate dayā
Yadu said: "O great king, I, your faultless son, have been cursed by you. If any compassion remains in you, grant me your grace."
Verse 36 (padma.2.78.36)
राजोवाच- यो भवेज्ज्येष्ठपुत्रस्तु पितुर्दुःखापहारकः । राज्यदायं सुभुंक्ते च भारवोढा भवेत्स हि
rājovāca- yo bhavejjyeṣṭhaputrastu piturduḥkhāpahārakaḥ rājyadāyaṁ subhuṁkte ca bhāravoḍhā bhavetsa hi
The king said: "Whoever is the eldest son, the remover of his father's sorrow, he alone truly enjoys the inheritance of the kingdom; he alone must bear its burden."
Verse 37 (padma.2.78.37)
त्वया धर्मं न प्रवृत्तमभाष्योसि न संशयः । भवता नाशिताज्ञा मे महादंडेन घातिनः
tvayā dharmaṁ na pravṛttamabhāṣyosi na saṁśayaḥ bhavatā nāśitājñā me mahādaṁḍena ghātinaḥ
"You have not upheld dharma; without doubt you are not fit to be spoken to. You have destroyed my command, deserving of great punishment."
Verse 38 (padma.2.78.38)
तस्मादनुग्रहो नास्ति यथेष्टं च तथा कुरु । यदुरुवाच- यस्मान्मे नाशितं राज्यं कुलं रूपं त्वया नृप
tasmādanugraho nāsti yatheṣṭaṁ ca tathā kuru yaduruvāca- yasmānme nāśitaṁ rājyaṁ kulaṁ rūpaṁ tvayā nṛpa
"Therefore there is no grace for you; do as you please." Yadu said: "O king, since you have destroyed my kingdom, my lineage, and my beauty -"
Verse 39 (padma.2.78.39)
तस्माद्दुष्टो भविष्यामि तव वंशपतिर्नृप । तव वंशे भविष्यंति नानाभेदास्तु क्षत्त्रियाः
tasmādduṣṭo bhaviṣyāmi tava vaṁśapatirnṛpa tava vaṁśe bhaviṣyaṁti nānābhedāstu kṣattriyāḥ
"- then, O king, I shall become the wicked lord of your own line; in your lineage shall arise many divisions of Kshatriyas -"
Verse 40 (padma.2.78.40)
तेषां ग्रामान्सुदेशांश्च स्त्रियो रत्नानि यानि वै । भोक्ष्यंति च न संदेहो अतिचंडा महाबलाः
teṣāṁ grāmānsudeśāṁśca striyo ratnāni yāni vai bhokṣyaṁti ca na saṁdeho aticaṁḍā mahābalāḥ
"- who, exceedingly fierce and mighty, shall without doubt enjoy their villages, fine lands, their women, and their jewels."
Verse 41 (padma.2.78.41)
मम वंशात्समुत्पन्नास्तुरुष्का म्लेच्छरूपिणः । त्वया ये नाशिताः सर्वे शप्ताः शापैः सुदारुणैः
mama vaṁśātsamutpannāsturuṣkā mleccharūpiṇaḥ tvayā ye nāśitāḥ sarve śaptāḥ śāpaiḥ sudāruṇaiḥ
"From my lineage shall arise the Turushkas, in the form of mlecchas; all those you have destroyed, I have now cursed with most terrible curses."
Verse 42 (padma.2.78.42)
एवं बभाषे राजानं यदुः क्रुद्धो नृपोत्तम । अथ क्रुद्धो महाराजः पुनश्चैवं शशाप ह
evaṁ babhāṣe rājānaṁ yaduḥ kruddho nṛpottama atha kruddho mahārājaḥ punaścaivaṁ śaśāpa ha
O best of kings, the enraged Yadu spoke thus to the king; then the enraged great king cursed him again thus:
Verse 43 (padma.2.78.43)
मत्प्रजानाशकाः सर्वे वंशजास्ते शृणुष्व हि । यावच्चंद्रश्च सूर्यश्च पृथ्वी नक्षत्रतारकाः
matprajānāśakāḥ sarve vaṁśajāste śṛṇuṣva hi yāvaccaṁdraśca sūryaśca pṛthvī nakṣatratārakāḥ
"'Hear this: all those born in your line, destroyers of my subjects - as long as the moon and sun, the earth, the constellations and stars endure -'"
Verse 44 (padma.2.78.44)
तावन्म्लेच्छाः प्रपक्ष्यंते कुंभीपाके चरौ रवे । कुरुं दृष्ट्वा ततो बालं क्रीडमानं सुलक्षणम्
tāvanmlecchāḥ prapakṣyaṁte kuṁbhīpāke carau rave kuruṁ dṛṣṭvā tato bālaṁ krīḍamānaṁ sulakṣaṇam
"'- so long shall these mlecchas be roasted in the terrible fire of the Kumbhipaka hell.'" Then, seeing Kuru, a child of fine marks, at play -
Verse 45 (padma.2.78.45)
समाह्वयति तं राजा न सुतं नृपनंदनम् । शिशुं ज्ञात्वा परित्यक्तः सकुरुस्तेन वै तदा
samāhvayati taṁ rājā na sutaṁ nṛpanaṁdanam śiśuṁ jñātvā parityaktaḥ sakurustena vai tadā
- the king did not summon him as a son for this task; recognizing him as a mere child, Kuru was set aside on that occasion.
Verse 46 (padma.2.78.46)
शर्मिष्ठायाः सुतं पुण्यं तं पूरुं जगदीश्वरः । समाहूय बभाषे च जरा मे गृह्यतां पुनः
śarmiṣṭhāyāḥ sutaṁ puṇyaṁ taṁ pūruṁ jagadīśvaraḥ samāhūya babhāṣe ca jarā me gṛhyatāṁ punaḥ
The lord of the earth then summoned Puru, the meritorious son of Sharmishtha, and said: "Take this old age of mine once again -"
Verse 47 (padma.2.78.47)
भुंक्ष्व राज्यं मया दत्तं सुपुण्यं हतकंटकम् । पूरुरुवाच- राज्यं देवे न भोक्तव्यं पित्रा भुक्तं यथा तव
bhuṁkṣva rājyaṁ mayā dattaṁ supuṇyaṁ hatakaṁṭakam pūruruvāca- rājyaṁ deve na bhoktavyaṁ pitrā bhuktaṁ yathā tava
"'- and enjoy this most auspicious, thorn-free kingdom that I give you.'" Puru said: "O godlike one, this kingdom is not for me to enjoy while it remains yours to have enjoyed."
Verse 48 (padma.2.78.48)
त्वदादेशं करिष्यामि जरा मे दीयतां नृप । तारुण्येन ममाद्यैव भूत्वा सुंदररूपदृक्
tvadādeśaṁ kariṣyāmi jarā me dīyatāṁ nṛpa tāruṇyena mamādyaiva bhūtvā suṁdararūpadṛk
"'I shall do as you command, O king; let old age be given to me. Having become endowed with youth today, of beautiful form -'"
Verse 49 (padma.2.78.49)
भुंक्ष्व भोगान्सुकर्माणि विषयासक्तचेतसा । यावदिच्छा महाभाग विहरस्व तया सह
bhuṁkṣva bhogānsukarmāṇi viṣayāsaktacetasā yāvadicchā mahābhāga viharasva tayā saha
"'- enjoy fine pleasures and good deeds, your mind attached to sense-objects; O blessed one, roam with her as long as you desire.'"
Verse 50 (padma.2.78.50)
यावज्जीवाम्यहं तात जरां तावद्धराम्यहम् । एवमुक्तस्तु तेनापि पूरुणा जगतीपतिः
yāvajjīvāmyahaṁ tāta jarāṁ tāvaddharāmyaham evamuktastu tenāpi pūruṇā jagatīpatiḥ
"'As long as I live, father, so long shall I bear this old age.'" Addressed thus by Puru, the lord of the earth -
Verse 51 (padma.2.78.51)
हर्षेण महताविष्टस्तं पुत्रं प्रत्युवाच सः । यस्माद्वत्स ममाज्ञा वै न हता कृतवानिह
harṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭastaṁ putraṁ pratyuvāca saḥ yasmādvatsa mamājñā vai na hatā kṛtavāniha
- filled with immense joy, replied to that son: "Because, my child, you have not destroyed my command here, but have fulfilled it -"
Verse 52 (padma.2.78.52)
तस्मादहं विधास्यामि बहुसौख्यप्रदायकम् । यस्माज्जरागृहीता मे दत्तं तारुण्यकं स्वकम्
tasmādahaṁ vidhāsyāmi bahusaukhyapradāyakam yasmājjarāgṛhītā me dattaṁ tāruṇyakaṁ svakam
"'- therefore I shall grant you abundant happiness. Because, having taken on old age, you have given me your own youth -'"
Verse 53 (padma.2.78.53)
तेन राज्यं प्रभुंक्ष्व त्वं मया दत्तं महामते । एवमुक्तः सुपूरुश्च तेन राज्ञा महीपते
tena rājyaṁ prabhuṁkṣva tvaṁ mayā dattaṁ mahāmate evamuktaḥ supūruśca tena rājñā mahīpate
"'- by that, O wise one, enjoy this kingdom that I give you.'" Thus addressed by the king, the excellent Puru -
Verse 54 (padma.2.78.54)
तारुण्यंदत्तवानस्मै जग्राहास्माज्जरां नृप । ततः कृते विनिमये वयसोस्तातपुत्रयोः
tāruṇyaṁdattavānasmai jagrāhāsmājjarāṁ nṛpa tataḥ kṛte vinimaye vayasostātaputrayoḥ
- gave him his own youth, O king, and took his old age in exchange. Thus, when this exchange of ages between father and son was made -
Verse 55 (padma.2.78.55)
तस्माद्वृद्धतरः पूरुः सर्वांगेषु व्यदृश्यत । नूतनत्वं गतो राजा यथा षोडशवार्षिकः
tasmādvṛddhataraḥ pūruḥ sarvāṁgeṣu vyadṛśyata nūtanatvaṁ gato rājā yathā ṣoḍaśavārṣikaḥ
- Puru appeared far older in every limb, while the king, made new, appeared as if he were sixteen years old.
Verse 56 (padma.2.78.56)
रूपेण महताविष्टो द्वितीय इव मन्मथः । धनूराज्यं च छत्रं च व्यजनं चासनं गजम्
rūpeṇa mahatāviṣṭo dvitīya iva manmathaḥ dhanūrājyaṁ ca chatraṁ ca vyajanaṁ cāsanaṁ gajam
Possessed of great beauty, like a second Manmatha, the great king gave him the bow, the kingdom, the royal umbrella, the fan, the throne, the elephant -
Verse 57 (padma.2.78.57)
कोशं देशं बलं सर्वं चामरं स्यंदनं तथा । ददौ तस्य महाराजः पूरोश्चैव महात्मनः
kośaṁ deśaṁ balaṁ sarvaṁ cāmaraṁ syaṁdanaṁ tathā dadau tasya mahārājaḥ pūroścaiva mahātmanaḥ
- the treasury, the realm, the whole army, and likewise the chowrie and the chariot; all this the great king gave to that great soul, Puru.
Verse 58 (padma.2.78.58)
कामासक्तश्च धर्मात्मा तां नारीमनुचिंतयन् । तत्सरः सागरप्रख्यंकामाख्यं नहुषात्मजः
kāmāsaktaśca dharmātmā tāṁ nārīmanuciṁtayan tatsaraḥ sāgaraprakhyaṁkāmākhyaṁ nahuṣātmajaḥ
Attached to desire, thinking constantly of that woman, the righteous son of Nahusha went toward that ocean-like lake called Kama-sarovara -
Verse 59 (padma.2.78.59)
अश्रुबिंदुमती यत्र जगाम लघुविक्रमः । तां दृष्ट्वा तु विशालाक्षीं चारुपीनपयोधराम्
aśrubiṁdumatī yatra jagāma laghuvikramaḥ tāṁ dṛṣṭvā tu viśālākṣīṁ cārupīnapayodharām
- where Ashrubindumati was, going there with swift steps. Seeing that wide-eyed woman, of lovely, full breasts -
Verse 60 (padma.2.78.60)
विशालां च महाराजः कंदर्पाकृष्टमानसः । राजोवाच- आगतोऽस्मि महाभागे विशाले चारुलोचने
viśālāṁ ca mahārājaḥ kaṁdarpākṛṣṭamānasaḥ rājovāca- āgato'smi mahābhāge viśāle cārulocane
- and Vishala too, the great king, his mind drawn by Kandarpa, spoke. The king said: "I have come, O most fortunate Vishala, O lovely-eyed one."
Verse 61 (padma.2.78.61)
जरात्यागःकृतो भद्रे तारुण्येन समन्वितः । युवा भूत्वा समायातो भवत्वेषा ममाधुना
jarātyāgaḥkṛto bhadre tāruṇyena samanvitaḥ yuvā bhūtvā samāyāto bhavatveṣā mamādhunā
"'I have abandoned old age, O gracious one, and am now endowed with youth. Having become young, I have come; let her be mine now.'"
Verse 62 (padma.2.78.62)
यंयं हि वांछते चैषा तंतं दद्मि न संशयः । विशालोवाच- यदा भवान्समायातो जरां दुष्टां विहाय च
yaṁyaṁ hi vāṁchate caiṣā taṁtaṁ dadmi na saṁśayaḥ viśālovāca- yadā bhavānsamāyāto jarāṁ duṣṭāṁ vihāya ca
"'Whatever she desires, that I shall give her, without doubt.'" Vishala said: "Now that you have come, having abandoned wicked old age -"
Verse 63 (padma.2.78.63)
दोषेणैकेनलिप्तोसि भवंतं नैव मन्यते । राजोवाच- मम दोषं वदस्व त्वं यदि जानासि निश्चितम्
doṣeṇaikenaliptosi bhavaṁtaṁ naiva manyate rājovāca- mama doṣaṁ vadasva tvaṁ yadi jānāsi niścitam
"- you are still tainted by one fault; she still does not accept you." The king said: "Tell me my fault, if you know it for certain -"
Verse 64 (padma.2.78.64)
तं तु दोषं परित्यक्ष्ये गुणरूपं न संशयः
taṁ tu doṣaṁ parityakṣye guṇarūpaṁ na saṁśayaḥ
"'- that very fault I shall abandon, and I shall without doubt become one of pure virtue.'"
