Verse 1 (padma.2.85.1)

वेन उवाच- भगवन्देवदेवेश प्रसादाच्च मम त्वया । भार्यातीर्थं समाख्यातं पितृतीर्थमनुत्तमम्

vena uvāca- bhagavandevadeveśa prasādācca mama tvayā bhāryātīrthaṁ samākhyātaṁ pitṛtīrthamanuttamam

Vena said: "O Bhagavan, lord of gods, by your grace you have told me of the Wife's Tirtha, and the unsurpassed Father's Tirtha."

Verse 2 (padma.2.85.2)

मातृतीर्थं हृषीकेश बहुपुण्यप्रदायकम् । प्रसादसुमुखो भूत्वा गुरुतीर्थं वदस्व मे

mātṛtīrthaṁ hṛṣīkeśa bahupuṇyapradāyakam prasādasumukho bhūtvā gurutīrthaṁ vadasva me

"O Hrishikesha, you have told me too of the Mother's Tirtha, granting abundant merit. Now, with a gracious countenance, tell me of the Guru's Tirtha."

Verse 3 (padma.2.85.3)

श्रीभगवानुवाच- कथयिष्याम्यहं राजन्गुरुतीर्थमनुत्तमम् । सर्वपापहरं प्रोक्तं शिष्याणां गतिदायकम्

śrībhagavānuvāca- kathayiṣyāmyahaṁ rājangurutīrthamanuttamam sarvapāpaharaṁ proktaṁ śiṣyāṇāṁ gatidāyakam

Shri Bhagavan said: "I shall tell you, O king, of the unsurpassed Guru-tirtha, said to remove all sin and to grant disciples the highest goal."

Verse 4 (padma.2.85.4)

शिष्याणां परमं पुण्यं धर्मरूपं सनातनम् । परं तीर्थं परं ज्ञानं प्रत्यक्षफलदायकम्

śiṣyāṇāṁ paramaṁ puṇyaṁ dharmarūpaṁ sanātanam paraṁ tīrthaṁ paraṁ jñānaṁ pratyakṣaphaladāyakam

"It is the supreme merit of disciples, itself the very form of eternal dharma - the supreme tirtha, the supreme knowledge, granting its fruit directly before one's eyes."

Verse 5 (padma.2.85.5)

यस्यप्रसादाद्राजेंद्र इहैव फलमश्नुते । परलोके सुखं भुंक्ते यशः कीर्तिमवाप्नुयात्

yasyaprasādādrājeṁdra ihaiva phalamaśnute paraloke sukhaṁ bhuṁkte yaśaḥ kīrtimavāpnuyāt

"By whose grace, O king of kings, one enjoys the fruit right here, enjoys happiness in the other world, and attains fame and renown."

Verse 6 (padma.2.85.6)

प्रसादाद्यस्य राजेंद्र गुरोश्चैव महात्मनः । प्रत्यक्षं दृश्यते शिष्यैस्त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम्

prasādādyasya rājeṁdra guroścaiva mahātmanaḥ pratyakṣaṁ dṛśyate śiṣyaistrailokyaṁ sacarācaram

"By the grace of that great-souled guru alone, O king of kings, disciples directly behold the whole triple world with all its moving and unmoving things."

Verse 7 (padma.2.85.7)

व्यवहारं च लोकानामाचारं नृपनंदन । विज्ञानं विंदते शिष्यो मोक्षं चैव प्रयाति च

vyavahāraṁ ca lokānāmācāraṁ nṛpanaṁdana vijñānaṁ viṁdate śiṣyo mokṣaṁ caiva prayāti ca

"The disciple gains understanding of the conduct and customs of the worlds, O delight of kings, and attains liberation too."

Verse 8 (padma.2.85.8)

सर्वेषामेव लोकानां यथा सूर्यः प्रकाशकः । गुरुः प्रकाशकस्तद्वच्छिष्याणां गतिरुत्तमा

sarveṣāmeva lokānāṁ yathā sūryaḥ prakāśakaḥ guruḥ prakāśakastadvacchiṣyāṇāṁ gatiruttamā

"As the sun is the illuminator of all the worlds, so the guru is the illuminator and the supreme goal of disciples."

Verse 9 (padma.2.85.9)

रात्रावेव प्रकाशेच्च सोमो राजा नृपोत्तम । तेजसा साधयेत्सर्वमधिकारं चराचरम्

rātrāveva prakāśecca somo rājā nṛpottama tejasā sādhayetsarvamadhikāraṁ carācaram

"Just as the moon, king of the night, gives light at night, O best of kings, and by its splendor accomplishes all authority over moving and unmoving things -"

Verse 10 (padma.2.85.10)

गृहेप्रकाशयेद्दीपः समूहं नृपसत्तम । तेजसा नाशयेत्सर्वमंधकारघनाविलम्

gṛheprakāśayeddīpaḥ samūhaṁ nṛpasattama tejasā nāśayetsarvamaṁdhakāraghanāvilam

"- just as a lamp, O best of kings, illuminates the household gathering, and by its light destroys all thick, dense darkness -"

Verse 11 (padma.2.85.11)

अज्ञानतमसा व्याप्तं शिष्यं द्योतयते गुरुः । शिष्यप्रकाशउद्द्योतैरुपदेशैर्महामते

ajñānatamasā vyāptaṁ śiṣyaṁ dyotayate guruḥ śiṣyaprakāśauddyotairupadeśairmahāmate

"- so the guru illuminates the disciple pervaded by the darkness of ignorance. The disciple's illumination and enlightenment, O wise one, comes through the guru's teachings."

Verse 12 (padma.2.85.12)

दिवाप्रकाशकः सूर्यः शशीरात्रौ प्रकाशकः । गृहप्रकाशको दीपस्तमोनाशकरः सदा

divāprakāśakaḥ sūryaḥ śaśīrātrau prakāśakaḥ gṛhaprakāśako dīpastamonāśakaraḥ sadā

"The sun is the illuminator by day, the moon the illuminator by night, the lamp the illuminator of the house, ever the destroyer of darkness."

Verse 13 (padma.2.85.13)

रात्रौ दिवा गृहस्यांते गुरुः शिष्यं सदैव हि । अज्ञानाख्यं तमस्तस्य गुरुः सर्वं प्रणाशयेत्

rātrau divā gṛhasyāṁte guruḥ śiṣyaṁ sadaiva hi ajñānākhyaṁ tamastasya guruḥ sarvaṁ praṇāśayet

"At night, by day, and within the household, the guru is ever thus for the disciple; the guru utterly destroys that darkness called ignorance in him."

Verse 14 (padma.2.85.14)

तस्माद्गुरुः परं तीर्थं शिष्याणामवनीपते । एवं ज्ञात्वा ततः शिष्यः सर्वदा तं प्रपूजयेत्

tasmādguruḥ paraṁ tīrthaṁ śiṣyāṇāmavanīpate evaṁ jñātvā tataḥ śiṣyaḥ sarvadā taṁ prapūjayet

"Therefore, O lord of the earth, the guru is the supreme tirtha for disciples. Knowing this, the disciple should always worship him."

Verse 15 (padma.2.85.15)

गुरुं पुण्यमयं ज्ञात्वा त्रिविधेनापि कर्मणा । इत्यर्थे श्रूयते विप्र इतिहासः पुरातनः

guruṁ puṇyamayaṁ jñātvā trividhenāpi karmaṇā ityarthe śrūyate vipra itihāsaḥ purātanaḥ

"Knowing the guru to be meritorious, one should serve him with thought, word, and deed. On this subject, O brahmin, an ancient tale is heard -"

Verse 16 (padma.2.85.16)

सर्वपापहरः प्रोक्तश्च्यवनस्य महात्मनः । भार्गवस्य कुले जातश्च्यवनो मुनिसत्तमः

sarvapāpaharaḥ proktaścyavanasya mahātmanaḥ bhārgavasya kule jātaścyavano munisattamaḥ

"- said to remove all sin, concerning the great soul Chyavana. Born in the lineage of Bhrigu, Chyavana, foremost of sages -"

Verse 17 (padma.2.85.17)

तस्य चिंता समुत्पन्ना एकदा तु नृपोत्तम । कदाहं ज्ञानसंपन्नो भविष्यामि महीतले

tasya ciṁtā samutpannā ekadā tu nṛpottama kadāhaṁ jñānasaṁpanno bhaviṣyāmi mahītale

"- once had a thought arise in him, O best of kings: 'When shall I become endowed with knowledge upon this earth?'"

Verse 18 (padma.2.85.18)

दिवारात्रौप्रचिंतेत्स ज्ञानार्थी मुनिसत्तमः । एवं तु चिंतमानस्य मतिरासीन्महात्मनः

divārātraupraciṁtetsa jñānārthī munisattamaḥ evaṁ tu ciṁtamānasya matirāsīnmahātmanaḥ

"Day and night that foremost sage, seeking knowledge, pondered thus; and as he pondered so, a resolve arose in that great soul -"

Verse 19 (padma.2.85.19)

तीर्थयात्रां प्रयास्यामि अभीष्टफलदायिनीम् । गृहक्षेत्रादिसंत्यज्य भार्यां पुत्रं धनं ततः

tīrthayātrāṁ prayāsyāmi abhīṣṭaphaladāyinīm gṛhakṣetrādisaṁtyajya bhāryāṁ putraṁ dhanaṁ tataḥ

"'I shall go on a pilgrimage, one that grants the fruit I desire.' Abandoning his home, his fields, his wife, his son, and his wealth -"

Verse 20 (padma.2.85.20)

तीर्थयात्राप्रसंगेन अटते मेदिनीं तदा । लोमानुलोमयात्रां स गंगायाः कृतवान्नृप

tīrthayātrāprasaṁgena aṭate medinīṁ tadā lomānulomayātrāṁ sa gaṁgāyāḥ kṛtavānnṛpa

"- on the pretext of pilgrimage, O king, he then wandered the earth. He undertook the pilgrimage of the Ganga both along and against its current."

Verse 21 (padma.2.85.21)

स तद्वन्नर्मदायाश्च सरस्वत्या मुनीश्वरः । गोदावर्यादिसर्वासां नदीनां सागरस्य च

sa tadvannarmadāyāśca sarasvatyā munīśvaraḥ godāvaryādisarvāsāṁ nadīnāṁ sāgarasya ca

"That lord of sages did likewise for the Narmada, the Sarasvati, the Godavari, and all other rivers, and for the ocean too."

Verse 22 (padma.2.85.22)

अन्येषां सर्वतीर्थानां क्षेत्राणां च नृपोत्तम । देवानां पुण्यलिगानां यात्राव्याजेन सोऽभ्रमत्

anyeṣāṁ sarvatīrthānāṁ kṣetrāṇāṁ ca nṛpottama devānāṁ puṇyaligānāṁ yātrāvyājena so'bhramat

"For all other sacred places, holy sites, and the merit-bearing lingas of the gods too, O best of kings, he wandered under the pretext of pilgrimage."

Verse 23 (padma.2.85.23)

भ्रममाणस्य तस्यापि तीर्थेषु परमेषु च । भ्रममाणः समायातः क्षेत्राणामुत्तमं तदा । कायश्च निर्मलो जातः सूर्यतेजः समप्रभः

bhramamāṇasya tasyāpi tīrtheṣu parameṣu ca bhramamāṇaḥ samāyātaḥ kṣetrāṇāmuttamaṁ tadā kāyaśca nirmalo jātaḥ sūryatejaḥ samaprabhaḥ

"As he wandered thus among the supreme tirthas, he came at last to the finest of all holy sites; his body became stainless, radiant as the very splendor of the sun."

Verse 24 (padma.2.85.24)

च्यवनः काशते दीप्त्या पूतात्मानेन कर्मणा

cyavanaḥ kāśate dīptyā pūtātmānena karmaṇā

"Chyavana, his soul purified by his conduct, shone with radiance."

Verse 25 (padma.2.85.25)

नर्मदा दक्षिणे कूले नाम्ना अमरकंटकम् । ददर्श सुमहालिगं सर्वेषां गतिदायकम्

narmadā dakṣiṇe kūle nāmnā amarakaṁṭakam dadarśa sumahāligaṁ sarveṣāṁ gatidāyakam

"On the southern bank of the Narmada, at the place named Amarakantaka, he beheld a very great linga, the deliverer of all."

Verse 26 (padma.2.85.26)

नत्वा स्तुत्वा तु संपूज्य सिद्धनाथं महेश्वरम् । ज्वालेश्वरं ततो दृष्ट्वा दृष्ट्वा चाप्यमरेश्वरम्

natvā stutvā tu saṁpūjya siddhanāthaṁ maheśvaram jvāleśvaraṁ tato dṛṣṭvā dṛṣṭvā cāpyamareśvaram

"Having bowed, praised, and worshipped Siddhanatha Maheshvara, and having then beheld Jvaleshvara and also Amareshvara -"

Verse 27 (padma.2.85.27)

ब्रह्मेशं कपिलेशं च मार्कंडेश्वरमुत्तमम् । एवं यात्रां ततः कृत्वा ॐकारं समुपागतः

brahmeśaṁ kapileśaṁ ca mārkaṁḍeśvaramuttamam evaṁ yātrāṁ tataḥ kṛtvā oṁkāraṁ samupāgataḥ

"- and Brahmesha, Kapileshvara, and the excellent Markandeshvara, having thus completed his pilgrimage, he arrived at Omkara."

Verse 28 (padma.2.85.28)

वटच्छायां समाश्रित्य शीतलां श्रमनाशिनीम् । सुखेन संस्थितो विप्रश्च्यवनो भृगुनंदनः

vaṭacchāyāṁ samāśritya śītalāṁ śramanāśinīm sukhena saṁsthito vipraścyavano bhṛgunaṁdanaḥ

"Taking shelter in the cool shade of a banyan tree, a dispeller of fatigue, that brahmin Chyavana, descendant of Bhrigu, sat there at ease."

Verse 29 (padma.2.85.29)

तत्र स्वनं स शुश्राव समुक्तं पक्षिणा तदा । दिव्यभाषा समायुक्तं ज्ञानविज्ञानसंयुतम्

tatra svanaṁ sa śuśrāva samuktaṁ pakṣiṇā tadā divyabhāṣā samāyuktaṁ jñānavijñānasaṁyutam

"There he heard a sound uttered by a bird, filled with divine speech, endowed with knowledge and discernment."

Verse 30 (padma.2.85.30)

शुकश्च एकस्तत्रास्ते बहुकालप्रजीवकः । कुंजलोनाम धर्मात्मा चतुःपुत्रः सभार्यकः

śukaśca ekastatrāste bahukālaprajīvakaḥ kuṁjalonāma dharmātmā catuḥputraḥ sabhāryakaḥ

"There dwelt a single parrot, one who had lived for a very long time, righteous of soul, named Kunjala, with four sons and a wife."

Verse 31 (padma.2.85.31)

आसंस्तस्य हि पुत्राश्च चत्वारः पितृनंदनाः । तेषां नामानि राजेंद्र कथयिष्ये तवाग्रतः

āsaṁstasya hi putrāśca catvāraḥ pitṛnaṁdanāḥ teṣāṁ nāmāni rājeṁdra kathayiṣye tavāgrataḥ

"He had four sons, delights of their father. Their names, O king of kings, I shall now tell you."

Verse 32 (padma.2.85.32)

ज्येष्ठस्तु उज्ज्वलो नाम द्वितीयस्तु समुज्ज्वलः । तृतीयो विज्वलोनाम चतुर्थश्च कपिंजलः

jyeṣṭhastu ujjvalo nāma dvitīyastu samujjvalaḥ tṛtīyo vijvalonāma caturthaśca kapiṁjalaḥ

"The eldest was named Ujjvala, the second Samujjvala, the third Vijvala, and the fourth Kapinjala."

Verse 33 (padma.2.85.33)

एवं पुत्रास्तु चत्वारः कुंजलस्य महामते । शुकस्य तस्य पुण्यस्य पितृमातृपरायणाः

evaṁ putrāstu catvāraḥ kuṁjalasya mahāmate śukasya tasya puṇyasya pitṛmātṛparāyaṇāḥ

"Such, O wise one, were the four sons of that meritorious parrot Kunjala, all devoted to their father and mother."

Verse 34 (padma.2.85.34)

भ्रमंति गिरिकुंजेषु द्वीपेषु च समाहिताः । भोजनार्थं तु संक्षुब्धाः क्षुधया परिपीडिताः

bhramaṁti girikuṁjeṣu dvīpeṣu ca samāhitāḥ bhojanārthaṁ tu saṁkṣubdhāḥ kṣudhayā paripīḍitāḥ

"They wandered together attentively among mountain groves and islands. Growing agitated for food, afflicted by hunger -"

Verse 35 (padma.2.85.35)

स्वोदरस्थां क्षुधां सौम्य फलैरमृतसन्निभैः । अमृतस्वादुतोयेन शमयंति नृपोत्तम

svodarasthāṁ kṣudhāṁ saumya phalairamṛtasannibhaiḥ amṛtasvādutoyena śamayaṁti nṛpottama

"- they would still the hunger in their own bellies, O best of kings, with ambrosia-like fruits and with sweet, ambrosial water."

Verse 36 (padma.2.85.36)

फलं पक्वं रसालं तु आहारार्थं सुपुत्रकाः । दत्वा फलानि दंपत्योर्निक्षिपंति प्रयत्नतः

phalaṁ pakvaṁ rasālaṁ tu āhārārthaṁ suputrakāḥ datvā phalāni daṁpatyornikṣipaṁti prayatnataḥ

"Taking ripe, juicy fruit for their own food, those good sons would carefully set aside some fruits for their parents too."

Verse 37 (padma.2.85.37)

मातुरर्थे महाभागा भक्तिभावसमन्विताः । तुष्टा आहारमुत्पाद्य भक्षयंति पठंति च

māturarthe mahābhāgā bhaktibhāvasamanvitāḥ tuṣṭā āhāramutpādya bhakṣayaṁti paṭhaṁti ca

"For their mother's sake, O most fortunate one, filled with devotion and contentment, having procured food, they would eat and recite."

Verse 38 (padma.2.85.38)

तत्र क्रीडारताः सर्वे विलसंति रमंति च । संध्याकालं समाज्ञाय पितुरंतिकमुत्तमम्

tatra krīḍāratāḥ sarve vilasaṁti ramaṁti ca saṁdhyākālaṁ samājñāya pituraṁtikamuttamam

"There, delighting in play, they all sported and made merry. Recognizing the coming of evening, toward their excellent father -"

Verse 39 (padma.2.85.39)

आयांति भक्ष्यमादाय गुर्वर्थं तु प्रयत्नतः । पश्यतस्तस्य विप्रस्य च्यवनस्य महात्मनः

āyāṁti bhakṣyamādāya gurvarthaṁ tu prayatnataḥ paśyatastasya viprasya cyavanasya mahātmanaḥ

"- they would come bearing food, with effort, for their elders' sake. As that great-souled brahmin Chyavana watched -"

Verse 40 (padma.2.85.40)

आगतास्त्वंडजाः सर्वे पितुर्नीडं सुशोभनम् । पितरं मातरं चोभौ प्रणेमुस्ते महामते

āgatāstvaṁḍajāḥ sarve piturnīḍaṁ suśobhanam pitaraṁ mātaraṁ cobhau praṇemuste mahāmate

"- all those birds came to their father's beautiful nest. O wise one, they bowed to both their father and mother."

Verse 41 (padma.2.85.41)

ताभ्यां भक्ष्यं समासाद्य उपतस्थुस्तयोः पुरः । सर्वे संभाषिताः पित्रा मानितास्ते सुतोत्तमाः

tābhyāṁ bhakṣyaṁ samāsādya upatasthustayoḥ puraḥ sarve saṁbhāṣitāḥ pitrā mānitāste sutottamāḥ

"Having brought food for them, they presented themselves before their parents. All those excellent sons were addressed and honored by their father -"

Verse 42 (padma.2.85.42)

मात्रा च कृपया राजन्वचनैः प्रीतिसंमितैः । पक्षवातेन शीतेन मातापित्रोश्च ते तदा

mātrā ca kṛpayā rājanvacanaiḥ prītisaṁmitaiḥ pakṣavātena śītena mātāpitrośca te tadā

"- and, O king, by their mother too, with words full of affection and grace; and, with the fanning of their wings against the cold, [they comforted] their mother and father -"

Verse 43 (padma.2.85.43)

तेषामाप्यायनं तौ द्वौ चक्राते पक्षिणौ नृप । आशीर्भिरभिनंद्यैव द्वाभ्यामपि सुपुत्रकान्

teṣāmāpyāyanaṁ tau dvau cakrāte pakṣiṇau nṛpa āśīrbhirabhinaṁdyaiva dvābhyāmapi suputrakān

"- O king, those two birds thus nourished their offspring; having honored those good sons with blessings -"

Verse 44 (padma.2.85.44)

तैश्च दत्तं सुसंपुष्टमाहारममृतोपमम् । तावेव हि सुसंप्रीतिं चक्राते द्विजसत्तम

taiśca dattaṁ susaṁpuṣṭamāhāramamṛtopamam tāveva hi susaṁprītiṁ cakrāte dvijasattama

"- they gave them well-nourished, ambrosia-like food. O best of the twice-born, both parents were filled with great affection in return."

Verse 45 (padma.2.85.45)

पिबतो निर्मलं तोयं तीर्थकोटिसमुद्भवम् । स्वस्थानं तु समाश्रित्य सुखसंतुष्टमानसौ

pibato nirmalaṁ toyaṁ tīrthakoṭisamudbhavam svasthānaṁ tu samāśritya sukhasaṁtuṣṭamānasau

"Drinking pure water arisen from tens of millions of sacred places, and settling into their own place, their minds content and happy -"

Verse 46 (padma.2.85.46)

चक्राते च कथां दिव्यां सुपुण्यां पापनाशिनीम् । विष्णुरुवाच- पित्रा तु कुंजलेनापि पृष्ट उज्ज्वल आत्मजः

cakrāte ca kathāṁ divyāṁ supuṇyāṁ pāpanāśinīm viṣṇuruvāca- pitrā tu kuṁjalenāpi pṛṣṭa ujjvala ātmajaḥ

"- they would tell a divine, most meritorious, sin-destroying tale." Vishnu said: "Then the father Kunjala asked his son Ujjvala -"

Verse 47 (padma.2.85.47)

क्वगतोऽस्यद्य पुत्र त्वं किमपूर्वं त्वया पुनः । तत्र दृष्टं श्रुतं पुण्यं तन्मे कथय नंदन

kvagato'syadya putra tvaṁ kimapūrvaṁ tvayā punaḥ tatra dṛṣṭaṁ śrutaṁ puṇyaṁ tanme kathaya naṁdana

"'Where did you go today, my son? What new thing did you see this time? Tell me, my son, what meritorious thing you saw and heard there.'"

Verse 48 (padma.2.85.48)

कुंजलस्य पितुर्वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य स उज्ज्वलः । पितरं प्रत्युवाचाथ भक्त्या नमितकंधरः

kuṁjalasya piturvākyaṁ samākarṇya sa ujjvalaḥ pitaraṁ pratyuvācātha bhaktyā namitakaṁdharaḥ

Having heard his father Kunjala's words, Ujjvala, his head bowed in devotion, replied to his father -

Verse 49 (padma.2.85.49)

प्रणाममकरोन्मूर्ध्ना कथां चक्रे मनोहराम् । उज्ज्वल उवाच- प्लक्षद्वीपं महाभाग नित्यमेव व्रजाम्यहम्

praṇāmamakaronmūrdhnā kathāṁ cakre manoharām ujjvala uvāca- plakṣadvīpaṁ mahābhāga nityameva vrajāmyaham

- he bowed his head, and told a charming story. Ujjvala said: "O most fortunate one, I go every day to Plaksha-dvipa -"

Verse 50 (padma.2.85.50)

महता उद्यमेनापि आहारार्थं महामते । प्लक्षेद्वीपे महाराज संति देशा अनेकशः

mahatā udyamenāpi āhārārthaṁ mahāmate plakṣedvīpe mahārāja saṁti deśā anekaśaḥ

"- with great effort, O wise one, for the sake of food. In Plaksha-dvipa, great king, there are many lands,"

Verse 51 (padma.2.85.51)

पर्वताः सरिदुद्यान वनानि च सरांसि च । ग्रामाश्च पत्तनाश्चान्ये सुप्रजाभिः प्रमोदिताः

parvatāḥ saridudyāna vanāni ca sarāṁsi ca grāmāśca pattanāścānye suprajābhiḥ pramoditāḥ

"- mountains, rivers, gardens, forests, and lakes, and other villages and cities, delighted with fine offspring."

Verse 52 (padma.2.85.52)

सदा सुखेन संतुष्टा लोका हृष्टा वसंति ते । दानपुण्यजपोपेताः श्रद्धाभावसमन्विताः

sadā sukhena saṁtuṣṭā lokā hṛṣṭā vasaṁti te dānapuṇyajapopetāḥ śraddhābhāvasamanvitāḥ

"The people there dwell always content and happy, joyful, devoted to charity, merit, and recitation, full of faith and devotion."

Verse 53 (padma.2.85.53)

प्लक्षद्वीपे महाराज आसीत्पुण्यमतिः सदा । दिवोदासस्तु धर्मात्मा तत्सुतासीदनूपमा

plakṣadvīpe mahārāja āsītpuṇyamatiḥ sadā divodāsastu dharmātmā tatsutāsīdanūpamā

"In Plaksha-dvipa, great king, there was ever a man of pious mind - the righteous Divodasa; his daughter was without equal,"

Verse 54 (padma.2.85.54)

गुणरूपसमायुक्ता सुशीला चारुमंगला । दिव्यादेवीति विख्याता रूपेणाप्रतिमा भुवि

guṇarūpasamāyuktā suśīlā cārumaṁgalā divyādevīti vikhyātā rūpeṇāpratimā bhuvi

"- endowed with virtue and beauty, of good conduct, lovely and auspicious, renowned by the name Divyadevi, unmatched in beauty on earth."

Verse 55 (padma.2.85.55)

पित्रा विलोकिता सा तु रूपतारुण्यमंगला । प्रथमे वयसि सा च वर्त्तते चारुमंगला

pitrā vilokitā sā tu rūpatāruṇyamaṁgalā prathame vayasi sā ca varttate cārumaṁgalā

"Seen by her father, endowed with beauty, youth, and auspiciousness, that lovely and auspicious girl, in the first years of her life -"

Verse 56 (padma.2.85.56)

स तां दृष्ट्वा दिवोदासो दिव्यां देवीं सुतां तदा । कस्मै प्रदीयते कन्या सुवराय महात्मने

sa tāṁ dṛṣṭvā divodāso divyāṁ devīṁ sutāṁ tadā kasmai pradīyate kanyā suvarāya mahātmane

"- seeing that divine goddess-like daughter, Divodasa then thought: 'To what excellent, great-souled suitor shall this maiden be given?'"

Verse 57 (padma.2.85.57)

इति चिंतापरो भूत्वा समालोक्य नरोत्तमः । रूपदेशस्य राजानं समालोक्य महीपतिः

iti ciṁtāparo bhūtvā samālokya narottamaḥ rūpadeśasya rājānaṁ samālokya mahīpatiḥ

"Thus absorbed in thought, that best of men pondered; that lord of the earth, having considered the king of the land of Rupa -"

Verse 58 (padma.2.85.58)

चित्रसेनं महात्मानं समाहूय नरोत्तमः । कन्यां ददौ महात्मासौ चित्रसेनाय धीमते

citrasenaṁ mahātmānaṁ samāhūya narottamaḥ kanyāṁ dadau mahātmāsau citrasenāya dhīmate

"- summoned the great soul Chitrasena, and that great-souled one gave his daughter to the wise Chitrasena."

Verse 59 (padma.2.85.59)

तस्या विवाहकाले तु संप्राप्ते समये नृप । मृतोसौ चित्रसेनस्तु कालधर्मेण वै किल

tasyā vivāhakāle tu saṁprāpte samaye nṛpa mṛtosau citrasenastu kāladharmeṇa vai kila

"But, O king, when the time for her marriage arrived, that very Chitrasena died, by the law of time."

Verse 60 (padma.2.85.60)

दिवोदासस्तु धर्मात्मा चिंतयामास भूपतिः । सुब्राह्मणान्समाहूय पप्रच्छ नृपनंदनः

divodāsastu dharmātmā ciṁtayāmāsa bhūpatiḥ subrāhmaṇānsamāhūya papraccha nṛpanaṁdanaḥ

"The righteous King Divodasa then fell into thought; that delight of kings, summoning good brahmins, asked them -"

Verse 61 (padma.2.85.61)

अस्या विवाहकाले तु चित्रसेनो दिवं गतः । अस्यास्तु कीदृशं कर्म भविष्यति वदंतु मे

asyā vivāhakāle tu citraseno divaṁ gataḥ asyāstu kīdṛśaṁ karma bhaviṣyati vadaṁtu me

"'At the very time of her marriage, Chitrasena went to heaven. What manner of deed lies behind this? Tell me.'"

Verse 62 (padma.2.85.62)

ब्राह्मणा ऊचुः- विवाहो दृश्यते राजन्कन्यायास्तु विधानतः । पतिर्मृत्युं प्रयात्यस्या नोचेत्संगं करोति च

brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ- vivāho dṛśyate rājankanyāyāstu vidhānataḥ patirmṛtyuṁ prayātyasyā nocetsaṁgaṁ karoti ca

The brahmins said: "O king, it is seen that whenever this maiden's marriage is duly performed, her husband meets death - unless he never unites with her -"

Verse 63 (padma.2.85.63)

महाधिव्याधिना ग्रस्तस्त्यागं कृत्वा प्रयाति च । प्रव्राजितो भवेद्राजन्धर्मशास्त्रेषु दृश्यते

mahādhivyādhinā grastastyāgaṁ kṛtvā prayāti ca pravrājito bhavedrājandharmaśāstreṣu dṛśyate

"- or, seized by a great illness, he renounces and departs; or, O king, he becomes a wandering ascetic - such is seen in the dharma-shastras."

Verse 64 (padma.2.85.64)

अनुद्वाहितायाः कन्याया उद्वाहः क्रियते बुधैः । न स्याद्रजस्वला यावदन्यः पतिर्विधीयते

anudvāhitāyāḥ kanyāyā udvāhaḥ kriyate budhaiḥ na syādrajasvalā yāvadanyaḥ patirvidhīyate

"The wise perform the marriage rite for an unmarried girl only before she reaches puberty; otherwise another husband is arranged for her -"

Verse 65 (padma.2.85.65)

विवाहं तु विधानेन पिता कुर्यान्न संशयः । एवं राजन्समादिष्टं धर्मशास्त्रं बुधैर्जनैः

vivāhaṁ tu vidhānena pitā kuryānna saṁśayaḥ evaṁ rājansamādiṣṭaṁ dharmaśāstraṁ budhairjanaiḥ

"- the father, without doubt, should perform the marriage according to proper rite." Thus, O king, the dharma-shastra was declared by the learned.

Verse 66 (padma.2.85.66)

विवाहः क्रियतामस्या इत्यूचुस्ते द्विजोत्तमाः । दिवोदासस्तु धर्मात्मा द्विजवाक्यप्रणोदितः

vivāhaḥ kriyatāmasyā ityūcuste dvijottamāḥ divodāsastu dharmātmā dvijavākyapraṇoditaḥ

"'Let her marriage be performed' - so said those excellent brahmins. The righteous Divodasa, urged on by the brahmins' words -"

Verse 67 (padma.2.85.67)

विवाहार्थं महाराज उद्यमं कृतवान्नृप । पुनर्दत्ता तु दानेन दिव्यादेवी द्विजोत्तम

vivāhārthaṁ mahārāja udyamaṁ kṛtavānnṛpa punardattā tu dānena divyādevī dvijottama

"- made every effort, O great king, toward her marriage. O best of the twice-born, Divyadevi was once again given away -"

Verse 68 (padma.2.85.68)

रूपसेनाय पुण्याय तस्मै राज्ञे महात्मने । मृत्युधर्मं गतो राजा विवाहे तु महीपतिः

rūpasenāya puṇyāya tasmai rājñe mahātmane mṛtyudharmaṁ gato rājā vivāhe tu mahīpatiḥ

"- to the meritorious King Rupasena, that great soul. But that king too, at the time of the marriage, met with the law of death."

Verse 69 (padma.2.85.69)

यदा यदा महाभाग दिव्यादेव्याश्च भूपतिः । भर्ता च म्रियते काले प्राप्ते लग्नस्य सर्वदा

yadā yadā mahābhāga divyādevyāśca bhūpatiḥ bhartā ca mriyate kāle prāpte lagnasya sarvadā

"Whenever, O most fortunate one, the appointed wedding hour of Divyadevi arrived, her husband would die at that very instant, every time."

Verse 70 (padma.2.85.70)

एकविंशतिभर्तारः काले काले मृताः पितः । ततो राजा महादुःखी संजातः ख्यातविक्रमः

ekaviṁśatibhartāraḥ kāle kāle mṛtāḥ pitaḥ tato rājā mahāduḥkhī saṁjātaḥ khyātavikramaḥ

"Twenty-one husbands, father, died one after another in this same way. Then that renowned and valiant king became exceedingly sorrowful."

Verse 71 (padma.2.85.71)

समालोच्य समाहूय समामंत्र्य स मंत्रिभिः । स्वयंवरे महाबुद्धिं चकार पृथिवीपतिः

samālocya samāhūya samāmaṁtrya sa maṁtribhiḥ svayaṁvare mahābuddhiṁ cakāra pṛthivīpatiḥ

"Having deliberated and consulted with his ministers, that lord of the earth, of great intelligence, resolved on a svayamvara."

Verse 72 (padma.2.85.72)

प्लक्षद्वीपस्य राजानः समाहूता महात्मना । स्वयंवरार्थमाहूतास्तथा ते धर्मतत्पराः

plakṣadvīpasya rājānaḥ samāhūtā mahātmanā svayaṁvarārthamāhūtāstathā te dharmatatparāḥ

"That great soul summoned all the kings of Plaksha-dvipa, inviting them there for the svayamvara - all those devoted to dharma."

तस्यास्तु रूपसंमुग्धा राजानो मृत्युनोदिताः । संग्रामं चक्रिरे मूढास्ते मृताः समरांगणे

tasyāstu rūpasaṁmugdhā rājāno mṛtyunoditāḥ saṁgrāmaṁ cakrire mūḍhāste mṛtāḥ samarāṁgaṇe

"Bewitched by her beauty, and driven on by death, those kings foolishly fought a battle among themselves, and died on the field of combat."

एवं तात क्षयो जातः क्षत्रियाणां महात्मनाम् । दिव्यादेवी सुदुःखार्ता गता सा वनकंदरम्

evaṁ tāta kṣayo jātaḥ kṣatriyāṇāṁ mahātmanām divyādevī suduḥkhārtā gatā sā vanakaṁdaram

"Thus, father, occurred a great destruction of great-souled kshatriyas. Divyadevi, overcome with sorrow, went to a mountain cave -"

रुरोद करुणं बाला दिव्यादेवी मनस्विनी । एवं तात मया दृष्टमपूर्वं तत्र वै तदा

ruroda karuṇaṁ bālā divyādevī manasvinī evaṁ tāta mayā dṛṣṭamapūrvaṁ tatra vai tadā

"- and that wise young girl, Divyadevi, wept there most piteously. Thus, father, did I witness this unprecedented event there at that time."

तन्मे सुविस्तरं तात तस्याः कथय कारणम्

tanme suvistaraṁ tāta tasyāḥ kathaya kāraṇam

"Tell me, father, the full and detailed reason for all this concerning her."
