Chitra's Two Deeds, and Kunjala's Teaching on Meditation
Verse 1 (padma.2.86.1)
कुंजल उवाच- तस्यास्तु चेष्टितं वत्स दिव्या देव्या वदाम्यहम् । पूर्वजन्मकृतं सर्वं तन्मे निगदतः शृणु
kuṁjala uvāca- tasyāstu ceṣṭitaṁ vatsa divyā devyā vadāmyaham pūrvajanmakṛtaṁ sarvaṁ tanme nigadataḥ śṛṇu
Kunjala said: "My son, I shall tell you of that divine goddess's conduct; hear from me all that was done in her previous birth."
Verse 2 (padma.2.86.2)
अस्ति वाराणसी पुण्या नगरी पापनाशिनी । तस्यामास्ते महाप्राज्ञः सुवीरो नाम नामतः
asti vārāṇasī puṇyā nagarī pāpanāśinī tasyāmāste mahāprājñaḥ suvīro nāma nāmataḥ
"There is a sacred city, Varanasi, destroyer of sin; there dwelt a very wise man named Suvira."
Verse 3 (padma.2.86.3)
वैश्यजात्यां समुत्पन्नो धनधान्यसमाकुलः । तस्य भार्या महाप्राज्ञ चित्रा नाम सुविश्रुता
vaiśyajātyāṁ samutpanno dhanadhānyasamākulaḥ tasya bhāryā mahāprājña citrā nāma suviśrutā
"Born in the vaishya caste, abounding in wealth and grain; his wife, O greatly wise one, was renowned by the name Chitra."
Verse 4 (padma.2.86.4)
कुलाचारं परित्यज्य अनाचारेण वर्तते । न मन्यते हि भर्तारं स्वैरवृत्त्या प्रवर्तते
kulācāraṁ parityajya anācāreṇa vartate na manyate hi bhartāraṁ svairavṛttyā pravartate
"Abandoning the conduct of her family, she lived in improper ways; she did not respect her husband, and acted according to her own whims."
Verse 5 (padma.2.86.5)
धर्मपुण्यविहीना तु पापमेव समाचरेत् । भर्तारं कुत्सते नित्यं नित्यं च कलहप्रिया
dharmapuṇyavihīnā tu pāpameva samācaret bhartāraṁ kutsate nityaṁ nityaṁ ca kalahapriyā
"Devoid of dharma and merit, she practiced only sin; she constantly reviled her husband, and was ever fond of quarrels."
Verse 6 (padma.2.86.6)
नित्यं परगृहे वासो भ्रमते सा गृहे गृहे । परच्छिद्रं समापश्येत्सदा दुष्टा च प्राणिषु
nityaṁ paragṛhe vāso bhramate sā gṛhe gṛhe paracchidraṁ samāpaśyetsadā duṣṭā ca prāṇiṣu
"She constantly dwelt in others' houses, wandering from home to home; she always looked for others' faults, ever malicious toward living beings."
Verse 7 (padma.2.86.7)
साधुनिंदापरा दुष्टा सदा हास्यकरा च सा । अनाचारां महापापां ज्ञात्वा वीरेण निंदिता
sādhuniṁdāparā duṣṭā sadā hāsyakarā ca sā anācārāṁ mahāpāpāṁ jñātvā vīreṇa niṁditā
"Devoted to slandering the virtuous, wicked, always mocking - knowing her to be of improper conduct and a great sinner, that hero, her husband, censured her."
Verse 8 (padma.2.86.8)
स तां त्यक्त्वा महाप्राज्ञ उपयेमे महामतिः । अन्य वैश्यस्य वै कन्यां तया सह प्रवर्तते
sa tāṁ tyaktvā mahāprājña upayeme mahāmatiḥ anya vaiśyasya vai kanyāṁ tayā saha pravartate
"He, the greatly wise, having abandoned her, took another vaishya's daughter as his wife, and lived with her."
Verse 9 (padma.2.86.9)
धर्माचारेण पुण्यात्मा सत्यधर्ममतिः सदा । निरस्ता तेन सा चित्रा प्रचंडा भ्रमते महीम्
dharmācāreṇa puṇyātmā satyadharmamatiḥ sadā nirastā tena sā citrā pracaṁḍā bhramate mahīm
"Rejected by that husband, who was of righteous conduct, a meritorious soul, ever devoted to truth and dharma, that fierce Chitra then wandered the earth."
Verse 10 (padma.2.86.10)
दुष्टानां संगतिं प्राप्ता नराणां पापिनां सदा । दूतीकर्म चकाराथ सा तेषां पापनिश्चया
duṣṭānāṁ saṁgatiṁ prāptā narāṇāṁ pāpināṁ sadā dūtīkarma cakārātha sā teṣāṁ pāpaniścayā
"Having found the company of wicked, sinful men always, she took up the work of a go-between, resolved in her sin."
Verse 11 (padma.2.86.11)
गृहभंगं चकाराथ साधूनां पापकारिणी । साध्वीं नारीं समाहूय पापवाक्यैः सुलोभयेत्
gṛhabhaṁgaṁ cakārātha sādhūnāṁ pāpakāriṇī sādhvīṁ nārīṁ samāhūya pāpavākyaiḥ sulobhayet
"That sinful woman broke apart the households of the virtuous; summoning some chaste woman, she would tempt her with wicked words."
Verse 12 (padma.2.86.12)
धर्मभंगं चकाराथ वाक्यैः प्रत्ययकारकैः । साधूनां सा स्त्रियं चित्रा अन्यस्मै प्रतिपादयेत्
dharmabhaṁgaṁ cakārātha vākyaiḥ pratyayakārakaiḥ sādhūnāṁ sā striyaṁ citrā anyasmai pratipādayet
"She broke apart dharma with persuasive, trustworthy-sounding words; that Chitra would hand over the wives of virtuous men to other men."
Verse 13 (padma.2.86.13)
एवं गृहशतं भग्नं चित्रया पापनिश्चयात् । संग्रामं सा महादुष्टाऽकारयत्पतिपुत्रकैः
evaṁ gṛhaśataṁ bhagnaṁ citrayā pāpaniścayāt saṁgrāmaṁ sā mahāduṣṭā'kārayatpatiputrakaiḥ
"Thus, through Chitra's sinful resolve, a hundred households were broken; that most wicked woman also caused husbands and sons to war with one another."
Verse 14 (padma.2.86.14)
मनांसि चालयेत्पापा पुरुषाणां स्त्रियः प्रति । अकारयच्च संग्रामं यमग्रामविवर्धनम्
manāṁsi cālayetpāpā puruṣāṇāṁ striyaḥ prati akārayacca saṁgrāmaṁ yamagrāmavivardhanam
"That sinful woman would sway men's minds toward women, and stir up conflict that swelled the ranks of Yama's domain."
Verse 15 (padma.2.86.15)
एवं गृहशतं भंक्त्वा पश्चात्सा निधनं गता। शासिता यमराजेन बहुदंडैः सुनंदन
evaṁ gṛhaśataṁ bhaṁktvā paścātsā nidhanaṁ gatā śāsitā yamarājena bahudaṁḍaiḥ sunaṁdana
"Having thus broken a hundred households, she afterward met her death; O delight of your father, Yamaraja punished her with many great torments."
Verse 16 (padma.2.86.16)
अभोजयत्सुनरकान्रौरवांस्तरणेः सुतः । पाचिता रौरवे चित्रा चित्राः पीडाः प्रदर्शिताः
abhojayatsunarakānrauravāṁstaraṇeḥ sutaḥ pācitā raurave citrā citrāḥ pīḍāḥ pradarśitāḥ
"The son of the sun [Yama] sent her into the terrible hells of Raurava and others; Chitra was cooked in Raurava, and shown manifold torments."
Verse 17 (padma.2.86.17)
यादृशं क्रियते कर्म तादृशं परिभुज्यते । तया गृहशतं भग्नं चित्रया पापनिश्चयात्
yādṛśaṁ kriyate karma tādṛśaṁ paribhujyate tayā gṛhaśataṁ bhagnaṁ citrayā pāpaniścayāt
"Whatever deed is done, that same is what one must endure; she had broken a hundred households through sinful resolve."
Verse 18 (padma.2.86.18)
तत्तत्कर्मविपाकोऽयं तया भुक्तो द्विजोत्तम । यस्माद्गृहशतं भग्नं तस्माद्दुःखं प्रभुंजति
tattatkarmavipāko'yaṁ tayā bhukto dvijottama yasmādgṛhaśataṁ bhagnaṁ tasmādduḥkhaṁ prabhuṁjati
"O best of the twice-born, this is the ripening of that very karma which she endured; because a hundred households were broken, therefore she suffers sorrow."
Verse 19 (padma.2.86.19)
विवाहसमये प्राप्ते दैवं च पाकतां गतम् । प्राप्ते विवाहसमये भर्ता मृत्युं प्रयाति च
vivāhasamaye prāpte daivaṁ ca pākatāṁ gatam prāpte vivāhasamaye bhartā mṛtyuṁ prayāti ca
"When the time of marriage arrives, fate comes to its ripening; when the time of marriage arrives, the husband goes to death."
Verse 20 (padma.2.86.20)
यथा गृहशतं भग्नं तथा वरशतं मृतम् । स्वयंवरे तदा वत्स विवाहे चैकविंशतिः
yathā gṛhaśataṁ bhagnaṁ tathā varaśataṁ mṛtam svayaṁvare tadā vatsa vivāhe caikaviṁśatiḥ
"Just as a hundred households were broken, so a hundred bridegrooms died; and then, my child, at the svayamvara marriage, twenty-one more."
Verse 21 (padma.2.86.21)
दिव्या देव्या मया ख्यातं यथा मे पृच्छितं त्वया । एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं तस्याः पूर्वविचेष्टितम्
divyā devyā mayā khyātaṁ yathā me pṛcchitaṁ tvayā etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ tasyāḥ pūrvaviceṣṭitam
"This is what I have told you of the divine goddess, as you asked me; I have related to you all of her former conduct."
Verse 22 (padma.2.86.22)
उज्ज्वल उवाच- दिव्या देव्यास्त्वया ख्यातं यत्पूर्वं पूर्वचेष्टितम् । तथा पापं कृतं घोरं गृहभंगाख्यमेव च
ujjvala uvāca- divyā devyāstvayā khyātaṁ yatpūrvaṁ pūrvaceṣṭitam tathā pāpaṁ kṛtaṁ ghoraṁ gṛhabhaṁgākhyameva ca
Ujjvala said: "You have told me of Divyadevi's former conduct, and of that terrible sin she committed, called the breaking of households."
Verse 23 (padma.2.86.23)
प्लक्षद्वीपस्य भूपस्य दिवोदासस्य वै सुता । केन पुण्यप्रभावेण तया प्राप्तं महाकुलम्
plakṣadvīpasya bhūpasya divodāsasya vai sutā kena puṇyaprabhāveṇa tayā prāptaṁ mahākulam
"But the daughter of Divodasa, king of Plaksha-dvipa - by what power of merit did she obtain birth in so great a lineage?"
Verse 24 (padma.2.86.24)
एतन्मे संशयं तात तदेतत्प्रब्रवीतु मे । एवं पापसमाचारा कथं जाता नृपात्मजा
etanme saṁśayaṁ tāta tadetatprabravītu me evaṁ pāpasamācārā kathaṁ jātā nṛpātmajā
"This is my doubt, father; please explain it to me. How did a woman of such sinful conduct become born as a king's daughter?"
Verse 25 (padma.2.86.25)
कुंजल उवाच- चित्रायाश्चेष्टितं पुण्यं तत्सर्वं प्रवदाम्यहम् । श्रूयतामुज्ज्वल सुत चित्रया यत्कृतं पुरा
kuṁjala uvāca- citrāyāśceṣṭitaṁ puṇyaṁ tatsarvaṁ pravadāmyaham śrūyatāmujjvala suta citrayā yatkṛtaṁ purā
Kunjala said: "I shall tell you all of Chitra's meritorious deed as well; hear, my son Ujjvala, what Chitra did long ago."
Verse 26 (padma.2.86.26)
भ्रममाणो महाप्राज्ञः कश्चित्सिद्धः समागतः । कुचैलो वस्त्रहीनश्च संन्यासी स च दंडधृक्
bhramamāṇo mahāprājñaḥ kaścitsiddhaḥ samāgataḥ kucailo vastrahīnaśca saṁnyāsī sa ca daṁḍadhṛk
"A wandering, greatly wise Siddha once came there - unclad, without garments, a renunciant bearing a staff,"
Verse 27 (padma.2.86.27)
कौपीनेन समायुक्तः पाणिपात्रो दिगंबरः । गृहद्वारं समाश्रित्य चित्रायाः परिसंश्रितः
kaupīnena samāyuktaḥ pāṇipātro digaṁbaraḥ gṛhadvāraṁ samāśritya citrāyāḥ parisaṁśritaḥ
"- clothed only in a loincloth, his hand serving as his begging-bowl, sky-clad, resting near the door of Chitra's house -"
Verse 28 (padma.2.86.28)
स मौनी सर्वमुंडस्तु विजितात्मा जितेंद्रियः । निराहारो जिताहारः सर्वतत्त्वार्थदर्शकः
sa maunī sarvamuṁḍastu vijitātmā jiteṁdriyaḥ nirāhāro jitāhāraḥ sarvatattvārthadarśakaḥ
"- silent, his head fully shaven, self-conquered, master of his senses, without food, having conquered hunger, a seer of the truth of all things."
Verse 29 (padma.2.86.29)
दूराध्वानपरिश्रांत आतपाकुलमानसः । श्रमेण खिद्यमानश्च तृषाक्रांतः सुपुत्रक
dūrādhvānapariśrāṁta ātapākulamānasaḥ śrameṇa khidyamānaśca tṛṣākrāṁtaḥ suputraka
"Exhausted from a long journey, his mind troubled by the heat, wearied with fatigue, and overcome by thirst, my dear son -"
Verse 30 (padma.2.86.30)
चित्रा द्वारं समाश्रित्य च्छायामाश्रित्य संस्थितः । तया दृष्टो महात्मा स चित्रया श्रमपीडितः
citrā dvāraṁ samāśritya cchāyāmāśritya saṁsthitaḥ tayā dṛṣṭo mahātmā sa citrayā śramapīḍitaḥ
"- Chitra, resting near the doorway, taking shelter in the shade, saw that great soul, afflicted with fatigue."
Verse 31 (padma.2.86.31)
सेवां चक्रे च चित्रा सा तस्यैव सुमहात्मनः । पादप्रक्षालनं कृत्वा दत्वा आसनमुत्तमम्
sevāṁ cakre ca citrā sā tasyaiva sumahātmanaḥ pādaprakṣālanaṁ kṛtvā datvā āsanamuttamam
"Chitra performed service for that great soul; having washed his feet, and given him an excellent seat -"
Verse 32 (padma.2.86.32)
आस्यतामासने तात सुखेनापि सुकोमले । क्षुधापनोदनार्थं हि भुज्यतामन्नमुत्तमम्
āsyatāmāsane tāta sukhenāpi sukomale kṣudhāpanodanārthaṁ hi bhujyatāmannamuttamam
"'Be seated on this soft seat, at ease, father; and, to dispel your hunger, please eat this excellent food.'"
Verse 33 (padma.2.86.33)
स्वेच्छया परितुष्टश्च शीतलं सलिलं पिब । एवमुक्त्वा तथा कृत्वा देववत्पूज्य तं सुत
svecchayā parituṣṭaśca śītalaṁ salilaṁ piba evamuktvā tathā kṛtvā devavatpūjya taṁ suta
"'Drink this cool water, satisfied as you wish.' Having said this and done so, honoring him like a god, my son -"
Verse 34 (padma.2.86.34)
अंगसंवाहनं कृत्वा नाशितश्रम एव च । तयोक्तो हि महात्मा स भुक्त्वा पीत्वा द्विजोत्तम
aṁgasaṁvāhanaṁ kṛtvā nāśitaśrama eva ca tayokto hi mahātmā sa bhuktvā pītvā dvijottama
"- she massaged his limbs and thus removed his fatigue; addressed by her, that great soul, having eaten and drunk, O best of the twice-born -"
Verse 35 (padma.2.86.35)
एवं संतोषितः सिद्धस्तया तत्त्वार्थदर्शकः । संतुष्टः सर्वधर्मात्मा किंचित्कालं स्थिरोभवत्
evaṁ saṁtoṣitaḥ siddhastayā tattvārthadarśakaḥ saṁtuṣṭaḥ sarvadharmātmā kiṁcitkālaṁ sthirobhavat
"- that Siddha, thus satisfied by her, a seer of the truth of all things, content and wholly devoted to dharma, remained there for a while."
Verse 36 (padma.2.86.36)
स्वेच्छया स गतो विप्रो महायोगी यथागतम् । गते तस्मिन्महाभागे सिद्धे चैव महात्मनि
svecchayā sa gato vipro mahāyogī yathāgatam gate tasminmahābhāge siddhe caiva mahātmani
"That great yogi brahmin departed of his own will, just as he had come. When that most fortunate Siddha, that great soul, had gone -"
Verse 37 (padma.2.86.37)
सा चित्रा मरणं प्राप्ता स्वकर्मवशमागता । शासिता धर्मराजेन महादंडैः सुदुःखदैः
sā citrā maraṇaṁ prāptā svakarmavaśamāgatā śāsitā dharmarājena mahādaṁḍaiḥ suduḥkhadaiḥ
"- that Chitra too came under the sway of her own karma and met her death; Dharmaraja punished her with great and most sorrowful torments."
Verse 38 (padma.2.86.38)
सा चित्रा नरकं प्राप्ता वेदना व्रातदायकम् । भुंक्ते दुःखं महाराज सा वै युगसहस्रकम्
sā citrā narakaṁ prāptā vedanā vrātadāyakam bhuṁkte duḥkhaṁ mahārāja sā vai yugasahasrakam
"That Chitra went to hell, where manifold torments await; O great king, she endured that sorrow for a thousand ages."
Verse 39 (padma.2.86.39)
भोगांते तु पुनर्जन्म संप्राप्तं मानुषस्य च । पूर्वं संपूजितः सिद्धस्तया पुण्यवतां वरः
bhogāṁte tu punarjanma saṁprāptaṁ mānuṣasya ca pūrvaṁ saṁpūjitaḥ siddhastayā puṇyavatāṁ varaḥ
"At the end of that suffering, she attained rebirth as a human; because she had earlier honored that Siddha, finest among the meritorious -"
Verse 40 (padma.2.86.40)
तस्य कर्मविपाकोयं प्राप्ता पुण्यवतां कुले । क्षत्रियाणां महाराज्ञो दिवोदासस्य वै गृहे
tasya karmavipākoyaṁ prāptā puṇyavatāṁ kule kṣatriyāṇāṁ mahārājño divodāsasya vai gṛhe
"- this is the ripening of that very deed: she was born in the family of the meritorious, in the household of the great kshatriya king, Divodasa."
Verse 41 (padma.2.86.41)
दिव्यादेवी च तन्नाम जातं तस्या नरोत्तम । सा हि दत्तवती चान्नं पानं पुण्यं महात्मने
divyādevī ca tannāma jātaṁ tasyā narottama sā hi dattavatī cānnaṁ pānaṁ puṇyaṁ mahātmane
"And, O best of men, her name became Divyadevi. Because she had given that great soul food and drink, a meritorious act -"
Verse 42 (padma.2.86.42)
तस्य दानस्य सा भुंक्ते महत्पुण्यफलोदयम् । पिबते शीतलं तोयं मिष्टान्नं च भुनक्ति वै
tasya dānasya sā bhuṁkte mahatpuṇyaphalodayam pibate śītalaṁ toyaṁ miṣṭānnaṁ ca bhunakti vai
"- she now enjoys the great fruit of that very gift; she drinks cool water and enjoys sweet food."
Verse 43 (padma.2.86.43)
दिव्यान्भोगान्प्रभुंजाना वर्तते पितृमंदिरे । सिद्धस्यास्य प्रभावाच्च राजकन्या व्यजायत
divyānbhogānprabhuṁjānā vartate pitṛmaṁdire siddhasyāsya prabhāvācca rājakanyā vyajāyata
"Enjoying divine pleasures, she dwells in her father's palace; through that Siddha's power alone was she born a king's daughter."
Verse 44 (padma.2.86.44)
पापकर्मप्रभावाच्च गृहभंगान्महीपते । विधवात्वं भुंजते सा दिव्यादेवी सुपुत्रक
pāpakarmaprabhāvācca gṛhabhaṁgānmahīpate vidhavātvaṁ bhuṁjate sā divyādevī suputraka
"But, O lord of the earth, through the power of her sinful deed of breaking households, my dear son, that Divyadevi endures widowhood."
Verse 45 (padma.2.86.45)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं दिव्यादेव्या विचेष्टितम् । अन्यत्किन्ते प्रवक्ष्यामि यत्त्वं पृच्छसि मामिह
etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ divyādevyā viceṣṭitam anyatkinte pravakṣyāmi yattvaṁ pṛcchasi māmiha
"All this I have told you, of Divyadevi's whole conduct. What else shall I tell you, of what you now ask me?"
Verse 46 (padma.2.86.46)
उज्ज्वल उवाच- कथं सा मुच्यते शोकान्महादुःखाद्वदस्व मे । सास्याच्च कीदृशी बाला महादुःखेन पीडिता
ujjvala uvāca- kathaṁ sā mucyate śokānmahāduḥkhādvadasva me sāsyācca kīdṛśī bālā mahāduḥkhena pīḍitā
Ujjvala said: "Tell me how she may be freed from this sorrow, from this great grief; and what kind of girl she now is, afflicted by such great sorrow?"
Verse 47 (padma.2.86.47)
तत्सुखं कीदृशं तस्माद्विपाकश्च भविष्यति । एतन्मे संशयं तात सांप्रतं छेत्तुमर्हसि
tatsukhaṁ kīdṛśaṁ tasmādvipākaśca bhaviṣyati etanme saṁśayaṁ tāta sāṁprataṁ chettumarhasi
"What kind of happiness will be hers, and what will be the outcome? Father, please resolve this doubt of mine now."
Verse 48 (padma.2.86.48)
कथं सा लभते मोक्षं तंचोपायं वदस्व मे । एकाकिनी महाभागा महारण्ये प्ररोदिति
kathaṁ sā labhate mokṣaṁ taṁcopāyaṁ vadasva me ekākinī mahābhāgā mahāraṇye praroditi
"How may she attain liberation, and by what means? Tell me this. That most fortunate one weeps alone in the great forest."
Verse 49 (padma.2.86.49)
विष्णुरुवाच- पुत्रवाक्यं महच्छ्रुत्वा क्षणमेकं विचिंत्य सः । प्रत्युवाच महाप्राज्ञः कुंजलः पुत्रकं प्रति
viṣṇuruvāca- putravākyaṁ mahacchrutvā kṣaṇamekaṁ viciṁtya saḥ pratyuvāca mahāprājñaḥ kuṁjalaḥ putrakaṁ prati
Vishnu said: "Having heard his son's weighty words, and having reflected for a moment, the greatly wise Kunjala replied to his son -"
Verse 50 (padma.2.86.50)
शृणु वत्स महाभाग सत्यमेतद्वदाम्यहम् । पापयोनिं तु संप्राप्य पूर्वकर्मसमुद्भवाम्
śṛṇu vatsa mahābhāga satyametadvadāmyaham pāpayoniṁ tu saṁprāpya pūrvakarmasamudbhavām
"'Listen, my dear child, I shall tell you this truth. Having obtained this sinful womb, born of former karma -'"
Verse 51 (padma.2.86.51)
तिर्यक्त्वेन च मे ज्ञानं नष्टं संप्रति पुत्रक । अस्य वृक्षस्य संगाच्च प्रयतस्य महात्मनः
tiryaktvena ca me jñānaṁ naṣṭaṁ saṁprati putraka asya vṛkṣasya saṁgācca prayatasya mahātmanaḥ
"'- my knowledge too, my child, has now been lost, being in this animal state as a bird. Through my association with the tree of this self-controlled great soul -'"
Verse 52 (padma.2.86.52)
रेवायाश्च प्रसादेन विष्णोश्चैव प्रसादतः । येन सा लभते ज्ञानं मोक्षस्थानं निवर्तते
revāyāśca prasādena viṣṇoścaiva prasādataḥ yena sā labhate jñānaṁ mokṣasthānaṁ nivartate
"'- and through the grace of the Reva and the grace of Vishnu alone, that knowledge is attained, and one returns from the state of bondage -'"
Verse 53 (padma.2.86.53)
उपदेशं प्रवक्ष्यामि मोक्षमार्गमनुत्तमम् । यास्यते कल्मषान्मुक्ता यथा हेम हुताशनात्
upadeśaṁ pravakṣyāmi mokṣamārgamanuttamam yāsyate kalmaṣānmuktā yathā hema hutāśanāt
"'- I shall now declare that teaching, the unsurpassed path of liberation, by which she shall become freed from taint, as gold is freed by fire -'"
Verse 54 (padma.2.86.54)
शुद्धं च जायते वत्स संगाद्वह्नेः स्वरूपवत् । हरेर्ध्यानान्महाप्राज्ञ शीघ्रं तस्य महात्मनः
śuddhaṁ ca jāyate vatsa saṁgādvahneḥ svarūpavat harerdhyānānmahāprājña śīghraṁ tasya mahātmanaḥ
"'- and becomes pure, my child, through contact with fire, in its own true nature; so too, through meditation on Hari, O greatly wise one, she shall quickly become pure by that great soul's grace -'"

जपहोमव्रतात्पापं नाशं याति हि पापिनाम् । मदं त्यजेद्यथा नागो भयात्सिंहस्य सर्वदा
japahomavratātpāpaṁ nāśaṁ yāti hi pāpinām madaṁ tyajedyathā nāgo bhayātsiṁhasya sarvadā
"'- through recitation, fire-offering, and vows, the sin of sinners is destroyed; just as a serpent ever abandons its pride out of fear of a lion -'"

नामोच्चारेण कृष्णस्य तत्प्रयाति हि किल्बिषम् । तेजसा वैनतेयस्य विषहीना इवोरगाः
nāmoccāreṇa kṛṣṇasya tatprayāti hi kilbiṣam tejasā vainateyasya viṣahīnā ivoragāḥ
"'- so too, through the utterance of Krishna's name, sin departs without doubt; just as venomless serpents flee before the radiance of Garuda -'"
Verse 57 (padma.2.86.57)
ब्रह्महत्यादिकाः पापाः प्रलयं यांति नान्यथा । नामोच्चारेण तस्यापि चक्रपाणेः प्रयांति ते
brahmahatyādikāḥ pāpāḥ pralayaṁ yāṁti nānyathā nāmoccāreṇa tasyāpi cakrapāṇeḥ prayāṁti te
"'- sins such as the killing of a brahmin too go to destruction, not otherwise, than through the utterance of the name of him who bears the discus.'"
Verse 58 (padma.2.86.58)
यदा नामशतं पुण्यमघराशिविनाशनम् । सा जपेत स्थिरा भूत्वा कामक्रोधविवर्जिता
yadā nāmaśataṁ puṇyamagharāśivināśanam sā japeta sthirā bhūtvā kāmakrodhavivarjitā
"'When she recites the hundred meritorious names, which destroy heaps of sin, becoming steady, free from desire and anger -'"
Verse 59 (padma.2.86.59)
सर्वेंद्रियाणि संयम्य आत्मज्ञानेन गोपयेत् । तस्य ध्यानप्रविष्टा सा एकभूता समाहिता
sarveṁdriyāṇi saṁyamya ātmajñānena gopayet tasya dhyānapraviṣṭā sā ekabhūtā samāhitā
"'- restraining all her senses, guarding herself through self-knowledge, absorbed in meditation on him, unified and composed -'"
Verse 60 (padma.2.86.60)
सा जपेत्परमं ज्ञानं तदा मोक्षं प्रयाति च । तन्मनास्तत्पदे लीना योगयुक्ता यदा भवेत्
sā japetparamaṁ jñānaṁ tadā mokṣaṁ prayāti ca tanmanāstatpade līnā yogayuktā yadā bhavet
"'- let her recite that supreme knowledge; then she shall attain liberation, when her mind, merged in that state, becomes yoked in yoga.'"
Verse 61 (padma.2.86.61)
उज्ज्वल उवाच- वद तात परं ज्ञानं परमं मम सांप्रतम् । पश्चाद्ध्यान व्रतं पुण्यं नाम्नां शतमिहैव च
ujjvala uvāca- vada tāta paraṁ jñānaṁ paramaṁ mama sāṁpratam paścāddhyāna vrataṁ puṇyaṁ nāmnāṁ śatamihaiva ca
Ujjvala said: "Tell me, father, that supreme knowledge, which is now foremost in my mind; and afterward the meritorious vow of meditation, and the hundred names too, right here."
Verse 62 (padma.2.86.62)
कुंजल उवाच- परं ज्ञानं प्रवक्ष्यामि यन्न दृष्टं तु केनचित् । श्रूयतां पुत्र कैवल्यं केवलं मलवर्जितम्
kuṁjala uvāca- paraṁ jñānaṁ pravakṣyāmi yanna dṛṣṭaṁ tu kenacit śrūyatāṁ putra kaivalyaṁ kevalaṁ malavarjitam
Kunjala said: "I shall declare that supreme knowledge, which has been seen by none; hear, my son, of kaivalya - the pure, free from all taint."
Verse 63 (padma.2.86.63)
सूत उवाच- यथा दीपो निवातस्थो निश्चलो वायुवर्जितः। प्रज्वलन्नाशयेत्सर्वमंधकारं महामते
sūta uvāca- yathā dīpo nivātastho niścalo vāyuvarjitaḥ prajvalannāśayetsarvamaṁdhakāraṁ mahāmate
Suta said: "Just as a lamp, standing in a windless place, unmoving, free from wind, blazing forth, destroys all darkness, O wise one -"
Verse 64 (padma.2.86.64)
तद्वद्दोषविहीनात्मा भवत्येव निराश्रयः । निराशो निर्मलो वत्स न मित्रं न रिपुः कदा
tadvaddoṣavihīnātmā bhavatyeva nirāśrayaḥ nirāśo nirmalo vatsa na mitraṁ na ripuḥ kadā
"- so too the soul, free from fault, becomes independent, without support. Free from hope, pure, my child - it has neither friend nor foe, ever."
Verse 65 (padma.2.86.65)
न शोको न च हर्षश्च न लोभो न च मत्सरः । एको विषादहर्षैश्च सुखदुःखैर्विमुच्यते
na śoko na ca harṣaśca na lobho na ca matsaraḥ eko viṣādaharṣaiśca sukhaduḥkhairvimucyate
"Neither sorrow nor joy, neither greed nor envy; alone, it becomes free from despondency and joy, from pleasure and pain."
Verse 66 (padma.2.86.66)
विषयैश्चापि सर्वैश्च इंद्रियाणि स संहरेत् । तदा स केवलो जातः केवलत्वं प्रजायते
viṣayaiścāpi sarvaiśca iṁdriyāṇi sa saṁharet tadā sa kevalo jātaḥ kevalatvaṁ prajāyate
"It withdraws the senses entirely from all sense-objects; then it becomes 'the alone,' and the state of aloneness comes to be."

अग्निकर्मप्रसंगेन दीपस्तैलं प्रशोषयेत् । वर्त्याधारेण राजेंद्र निःसंगो वायुवर्जितः
agnikarmaprasaṁgena dīpastailaṁ praśoṣayet vartyādhāreṇa rājeṁdra niḥsaṁgo vāyuvarjitaḥ
"Through the working of fire, a lamp dries up its oil; through the support of its wick, O king of kings, detached and free from wind -"

कज्जलं वमते पश्चात्तैलस्यापि महामते । कृष्णासौ दृश्यते रेखा दीपस्याग्रे महामते
kajjalaṁ vamate paścāttailasyāpi mahāmate kṛṣṇāsau dṛśyate rekhā dīpasyāgre mahāmate
"- afterward, O wise one, it emits soot even from the oil; a black streak is seen at the tip of the lamp, O wise one -"

स्वयमाकृष्यते तैलं तेजसा निर्मलो भवेत् । कायवर्तिस्थितस्तद्वत्कर्मतैलं प्रशोषयेत्
svayamākṛṣyate tailaṁ tejasā nirmalo bhavet kāyavartisthitastadvatkarmatailaṁ praśoṣayet
"- the oil is drawn up of itself, and it becomes pure through its own radiance; just so, established in the wick of the body, it dries up the oil of karma -"

विषयान्कज्जलीकृत्य प्रत्यक्षं संप्रदर्शयेत् । जनयेन्निर्मलोभूत्वा स्वयमेव प्रकाशयेत्
viṣayānkajjalīkṛtya pratyakṣaṁ saṁpradarśayet janayennirmalobhūtvā svayameva prakāśayet
"- having turned sense-objects into soot, it displays them plainly; becoming pure, it generates and reveals itself, entirely on its own."

क्रोधादिभिः क्लेशसंज्ञैर्वायुभिः परिवर्जितः । निःस्पृहो निश्चलो भूत्वा तेजसा स्वयमुज्ज्वलेत्
krodhādibhiḥ kleśasaṁjñairvāyubhiḥ parivarjitaḥ niḥspṛho niścalo bhūtvā tejasā svayamujjvalet
"Freed from the winds called afflictions, such as anger, free from longing, unmoving, it blazes forth of itself with its own radiance."
Verse 72 (padma.2.86.72)
त्रैलोक्यं पश्यते सर्वं स्वस्थानस्थः स्वतेजसा । केवलज्ञानरूपोऽयं मया ते परिकीर्तितः
trailokyaṁ paśyate sarvaṁ svasthānasthaḥ svatejasā kevalajñānarūpo'yaṁ mayā te parikīrtitaḥ
"It beholds the entire triple world, established in its own place, by its own splendor. This is the form of absolute knowledge, which I have declared to you."
Verse 73 (padma.2.86.73)
ध्यानं तस्य प्रवक्ष्यामि द्विविधं तस्य चक्रिणः । केवलज्ञानरूपेण दृश्यते ज्ञानचक्षुषा
dhyānaṁ tasya pravakṣyāmi dvividhaṁ tasya cakriṇaḥ kevalajñānarūpeṇa dṛśyate jñānacakṣuṣā
"Now I shall tell you of the meditation on him who bears the discus, which is of two kinds: the first is seen in the form of absolute knowledge, by the eye of knowledge -"

योगयुक्ता महात्मानः परमार्थपरायणाः । यं पश्यंति विनिद्रास्तु यत्तपः सर्वदर्शकम्
yogayuktā mahātmānaḥ paramārthaparāyaṇāḥ yaṁ paśyaṁti vinidrāstu yattapaḥ sarvadarśakam
"- which great souls yoked in yoga, devoted to the supreme goal, ever wakeful, behold; whose austerity sees all things,"
Verse 75 (padma.2.86.75)
हस्तपादविहीनं च सर्वत्र परिगच्छति । सर्वं गृह्णाति त्रैलोक्यं स्थावरं जंगमं सुत
hastapādavihīnaṁ ca sarvatra parigacchati sarvaṁ gṛhṇāti trailokyaṁ sthāvaraṁ jaṁgamaṁ suta
"- without hands or feet, yet it moves everywhere; grasping the whole triple world, unmoving and moving, my son,"
Verse 76 (padma.2.86.76)
नासामुखविहीनस्तु घ्राति जक्षिति पुत्रक । अकर्णः शृणुते सर्वं सर्वसाक्षी जगत्पतिः
nāsāmukhavihīnastu ghrāti jakṣiti putraka akarṇaḥ śṛṇute sarvaṁ sarvasākṣī jagatpatiḥ
"- without nose or mouth, yet it smells and eats, my child; without ears, yet it hears all, the witness of all, the lord of the universe."
Verse 77 (padma.2.86.77)
अरूपो रूपसंबद्धः पंचवर्गवशंगतः । सर्वलोकस्य यः प्राणः पूजितः स चराचरैः
arūpo rūpasaṁbaddhaḥ paṁcavargavaśaṁgataḥ sarvalokasya yaḥ prāṇaḥ pūjitaḥ sa carācaraiḥ
"- formless, yet connected with form, seemingly subject to the five senses; he is the very life-breath of all the worlds, worshipped by all moving and unmoving beings,"

अजिह्वो वदते सर्वं वेदशास्त्रानुगं सुत । अत्वचः स्पर्शनं चापि सर्वेषामेव जायते
ajihvo vadate sarvaṁ vedaśāstrānugaṁ suta atvacaḥ sparśanaṁ cāpi sarveṣāmeva jāyate
"- without a tongue, yet speaking all things in accordance with the Vedas and scriptures, my son; without skin, yet the sense of touch arises for all through him."
Verse 79 (padma.2.86.79)
सदानंदो विरक्तात्मा एकरूपो निराश्रयः । निर्जरो निर्ममो न्यायी सगुणो निर्ममोमलः
sadānaṁdo viraktātmā ekarūpo nirāśrayaḥ nirjaro nirmamo nyāyī saguṇo nirmamomalaḥ
"Ever blissful, of dispassionate soul, of one form, without support, undecaying, free from possessiveness, just, possessed of qualities, free from 'mine' and from taint -"

अवश्यः सर्ववश्यात्मा सर्वदः सर्ववित्तमः । तस्य धाता न चैवास्ति स वै सर्वमयो विभुः
avaśyaḥ sarvavaśyātmā sarvadaḥ sarvavittamaḥ tasya dhātā na caivāsti sa vai sarvamayo vibhuḥ
"- uncontrollable by any, yet the very self within all who are controlled; the giver of all, the knower of all; there is no maker of him - he alone is all-pervading, the Lord."
Verse 81 (padma.2.86.81)
एवं सर्वमयं ध्यानं पश्यते यो महात्मनः । स याति परमं स्थानममूर्तममृतोपमम्
evaṁ sarvamayaṁ dhyānaṁ paśyate yo mahātmanaḥ sa yāti paramaṁ sthānamamūrtamamṛtopamam
"Whoever thus beholds this all-pervading meditation of that great soul attains the supreme abode, formless, like unto immortality."
Verse 82 (padma.2.86.82)
द्वितीयं तु प्रवक्ष्यामि अस्य ध्यानं महात्मनः । मूर्ताकारं तु साकारं निराकारं निरामयम्
dvitīyaṁ tu pravakṣyāmi asya dhyānaṁ mahātmanaḥ mūrtākāraṁ tu sākāraṁ nirākāraṁ nirāmayam
"I shall now tell you the second meditation on that great soul: possessing form, endowed with shape, yet also formless and free from affliction."
Verse 83 (padma.2.86.83)
ब्रह्माण्डं सर्वमतुलं वासितं यस्य वासना । स तस्माद्वासुदेवेति उच्यते मम नंदन
brahmāṇḍaṁ sarvamatulaṁ vāsitaṁ yasya vāsanā sa tasmādvāsudeveti ucyate mama naṁdana
"He whose desire has willed the whole incomparable universe into being - therefore, my child, he is called Vasudeva."
Verse 84 (padma.2.86.84)
वर्षमाणस्य मेघस्य यद्वर्णं तस्य तद्भवेत् । सूर्यतेजःप्रतीकाशं चतुर्बाहुं सुरेश्वरम्
varṣamāṇasya meghasya yadvarṇaṁ tasya tadbhavet sūryatejaḥpratīkāśaṁ caturbāhuṁ sureśvaram
"Whatever is the color of a raining cloud, that is his color; radiant as the splendor of the sun, four-armed, lord of the gods."
Verse 85 (padma.2.86.85)
दक्षिणे शोभते शंखो हेमरत्नविभूषितः । सूर्यबिंबसमाकारं चक्रं पद्मप्रतिष्ठितम्
dakṣiṇe śobhate śaṁkho hemaratnavibhūṣitaḥ sūryabiṁbasamākāraṁ cakraṁ padmapratiṣṭhitam
"On his right shines a conch adorned with gold and jewels; a discus, shaped like the orb of the sun, rests upon a lotus."
Verse 86 (padma.2.86.86)
कौमोदकी गदा तस्य महासुरविनाशिनी । वामे च शोभते वत्स हस्ते तस्य महात्मनः
kaumodakī gadā tasya mahāsuravināśinī vāme ca śobhate vatsa haste tasya mahātmanaḥ
"In the left hand of that great soul, my child, shines the Kaumodaki mace, destroyer of the great asuras."
Verse 87 (padma.2.86.87)
महापद्मं सुगंधाढ्यं तस्य दक्षिणहस्तगम् । शोभमानः सदैवास्ते सायुधः कमलाप्रियः
mahāpadmaṁ sugaṁdhāḍhyaṁ tasya dakṣiṇahastagam śobhamānaḥ sadaivāste sāyudhaḥ kamalāpriyaḥ
"A great, fragrant lotus rests ever in his right hand; thus adorned with his weapons, he, beloved of Kamala, shines forever."

कंबुग्रीवं वृत्तमास्यं पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणम् । राजमानं हृषीकेशं दशनै रत्नसन्निभैः
kaṁbugrīvaṁ vṛttamāsyaṁ padmapatranibhekṣaṇam rājamānaṁ hṛṣīkeśaṁ daśanai ratnasannibhaiḥ
"With a neck like a conch shell, a round face, eyes like lotus petals, resplendent Hrishikesha, with teeth like jewels,"

गुडाकेशाः सन्ति यस्य अधरो विद्रुमाकृतिः । शोभते पुंडरीकाक्षः किरीटेनापि पुत्रक
guḍākeśāḥ santi yasya adharo vidrumākṛtiḥ śobhate puṁḍarīkākṣaḥ kirīṭenāpi putraka
"With curling locks of hair, his lower lip like coral - the lotus-eyed one, my son, shines with his crown too."
Verse 90 (padma.2.86.90)
विशालेनापि रूपेण केशवस्तु सुवर्चसा । कौस्तुभेनांकितेनैव राजमानो जनार्दनः
viśālenāpi rūpeṇa keśavastu suvarcasā kaustubhenāṁkitenaiva rājamāno janārdanaḥ
"With his broad and radiant form, Keshava, marked with the Kaustubha gem, shines as Janardana."
Verse 91 (padma.2.86.91)
सूर्यतेजः प्रतीकाश कुंडलाभ्यां प्रभाति च । श्रीवत्सांकेन पुण्येन सर्वदा राजते हरिः
sūryatejaḥ pratīkāśa kuṁḍalābhyāṁ prabhāti ca śrīvatsāṁkena puṇyena sarvadā rājate hariḥ
"Radiant as the splendor of the sun through his two earrings, Hari ever shines with the auspicious mark of Shrivatsa."

केयूरकंकणैर्हारैर्मौक्तिकैरृक्षसन्निभैः । वपुषा भ्राजमानस्तु विजयो जयतां वरः
keyūrakaṁkaṇairhārairmauktikairṛkṣasannibhaiḥ vapuṣā bhrājamānastu vijayo jayatāṁ varaḥ
"With armlets, bracelets, and necklaces of pearls resembling stars, resplendent in body - the Victorious One, best among conquerors,"
Verse 93 (padma.2.86.93)
भ्राजते सोपि गोविंदो हेमवर्णेन वाससा । मुद्रिकारत्नयुक्ताभिरंगुलीभिर्विराजते
bhrājate sopi goviṁdo hemavarṇena vāsasā mudrikāratnayuktābhiraṁgulībhirvirājate
"- that Govinda too shines, in garments of golden hue; he is resplendent with fingers adorned with jeweled rings."

सर्वायुधैः सुसंपूर्णैर्दिव्यैराभरणैर्हरिः । वैनतेयसमारूढो लोककर्ता जगत्पतिः
sarvāyudhaiḥ susaṁpūrṇairdivyairābharaṇairhariḥ vainateyasamārūḍho lokakartā jagatpatiḥ
"Complete with every weapon and divine ornament, Hari, mounted upon Garuda, the maker of the worlds, the lord of the universe -"
Verse 95 (padma.2.86.95)
एवंतं ध्यायते नित्यमनन्यमनसा नरः । मुच्यते सर्वपापेभ्यो विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति
evaṁtaṁ dhyāyate nityamananyamanasā naraḥ mucyate sarvapāpebhyo viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati
"- whoever with undivided mind constantly meditates upon him thus is freed from all sins and goes to the world of Vishnu."
Verse 96 (padma.2.86.96)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं ध्यानमेव जगत्पतेः । व्रतं चैव प्रवक्ष्यामि सर्वपापनिवारणम्
etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ dhyānameva jagatpateḥ vrataṁ caiva pravakṣyāmi sarvapāpanivāraṇam
"All this I have told you, the very meditation on the lord of the universe. Now I shall tell you the vow that removes every sin."
