Verse 1 (padma.2.87.1)

कुंजल उवाच- व्रतभेदान्प्रवक्ष्यामि यैर्यैश्चाराधितो हरिः । जया च विजया चैव जयंती पापनाशिनी

kuṁjala uvāca- vratabhedānpravakṣyāmi yairyaiścārādhito hariḥ jayā ca vijayā caiva jayaṁtī pāpanāśinī

Kunjala said: "I shall now declare the various vows by which Hari has been worshipped: Jaya, Vijaya, and Jayanti, the destroyer of sin,"

Verse 2 (padma.2.87.2)

त्रिस्पृशा वंजुली चान्या तिलदग्धा तथापरा । अखंडाचारकन्या च मनोरथा सुपुत्रक

trispṛśā vaṁjulī cānyā tiladagdhā tathāparā akhaṁḍācārakanyā ca manorathā suputraka

"Trisprisha, another called Vanjuli, and also Tiladagdha, Akhandachara-kanya, and Manoratha, my dear son."

Verse 3 (padma.2.87.3)

एकादश्यास्तु भेदाश्च संति पुत्र अनेकधा । अशून्यशयनं चान्यज्जन्माष्टमी महाव्रतम्

ekādaśyāstu bhedāśca saṁti putra anekadhā aśūnyaśayanaṁ cānyajjanmāṣṭamī mahāvratam

"There are many kinds of Ekadashi vows too, my son; and others - Ashunya-shayana, and the great vow of Janmashtami."

Verse 4 (padma.2.87.4)

एतैर्व्रतैर्महापुण्यैः पापं दूरं प्रयाति च । प्राणिनां नात्र संदेहः सत्यं सत्यं वदाम्यहम्

etairvratairmahāpuṇyaiḥ pāpaṁ dūraṁ prayāti ca prāṇināṁ nātra saṁdehaḥ satyaṁ satyaṁ vadāmyaham

"By these greatly meritorious vows sin departs far away; there is no doubt of this for living beings - I speak the truth, only the truth."

Verse 5 (padma.2.87.5)

कुंजल उवाच- स्तोत्रं तस्य प्रवक्ष्यामि पापराशिविनाशनम् । सुपुत्रशतनामाख्यं नराणां गतिदायकम्

kuṁjala uvāca- stotraṁ tasya pravakṣyāmi pāparāśivināśanam suputraśatanāmākhyaṁ narāṇāṁ gatidāyakam

Kunjala said: "I shall now declare his hymn, the destroyer of the mass of sin - this hundred-named hymn, dear son, granting the highest goal to men."

Verse 6 (padma.2.87.6)

तस्य देवस्य कृष्णस्य शतनामाख्यमुत्तमम् । संप्रत्येव प्रवक्ष्यामि तच्छृणुष्व सुतोत्तम

tasya devasya kṛṣṇasya śatanāmākhyamuttamam saṁpratyeva pravakṣyāmi tacchṛṇuṣva sutottama

"I shall now declare the excellent hundred names of that god Krishna; hear it, best of sons."

Verse 7 (padma.2.87.7)

विष्णोर्नामशतस्यापि ऋषिं छंदो वदाम्यहम् । देवं चैव महाभाग सर्वपापविशोधनम्

viṣṇornāmaśatasyāpi ṛṣiṁ chaṁdo vadāmyaham devaṁ caiva mahābhāga sarvapāpaviśodhanam

"I shall tell you the sage and the meter of this hundred-named hymn of Vishnu, and the deity too, O most fortunate one, the purifier of all sin."

Verse 8 (padma.2.87.8)

विष्णोर्नामशतस्यापि ऋषिर्ब्रह्मा प्रकीर्तितः । ॐकारो देवता प्रोक्तश्छंदोनुष्टुप्तथैव च

viṣṇornāmaśatasyāpi ṛṣirbrahmā prakīrtitaḥ oṁkāro devatā proktaśchaṁdonuṣṭuptathaiva ca

"For this hundred-named hymn of Vishnu, the sage is declared to be Brahma; Omkara is proclaimed the deity, and the meter is Anushtubh."

Verse 9 (padma.2.87.9)

सर्वकामिकसंसिद्ध्यै मोक्षे च विनियोगकः । अस्य विष्णोः शतनामस्तोत्रस्य । ब्रह्मा ऋषिः विष्णुर्देवता अनुष्टुप्छंदः । सर्वकामसमृद्ध्यर्थं सर्वपापक्षयार्थे विनियोगः

sarvakāmikasaṁsiddhyai mokṣe ca viniyogakaḥ asya viṣṇoḥ śatanāmastotrasya brahmā ṛṣiḥ viṣṇurdevatā anuṣṭupchaṁdaḥ sarvakāmasamṛddhyarthaṁ sarvapāpakṣayārthe viniyogaḥ

"For the accomplishment of every desire and for liberation is its application." [The ritual formula:] "Of this Vishnu-hundred-names hymn - Brahma is the sage, Vishnu is the deity, Anushtubh is the meter; its application is for the fulfilment of every desire and for the destruction of every sin."

Verse 10 (padma.2.87.10)

नमाम्यहं हृषीकेशं केशवं मधुसूदनम् । सूदनं सर्वदैत्यानां नारायणमनामयम्

namāmyahaṁ hṛṣīkeśaṁ keśavaṁ madhusūdanam sūdanaṁ sarvadaityānāṁ nārāyaṇamanāmayam

"I bow to Hrishikesha, Keshava, Madhusudana, the slayer of all the daityas, the unafflicted Narayana,"

Verse 11 (padma.2.87.11)

जयंतं विजयं कृष्णमनंतं वामनं ततः । विष्णुं विश्वेश्वरं पुण्यं विश्वाधारं सुरार्चितम्

jayaṁtaṁ vijayaṁ kṛṣṇamanaṁtaṁ vāmanaṁ tataḥ viṣṇuṁ viśveśvaraṁ puṇyaṁ viśvādhāraṁ surārcitam

"Jayanta, Vijaya, Krishna, the endless Ananta, and Vamana; Vishnu, Vishveshvara, the meritorious, the support of the universe, worshipped by the gods,"

Verse 12 (padma.2.87.12)

अनघं त्वघहंतारं नरसिंहं श्रियः प्रियम् । श्रीपतिं श्रीधरं श्रीदं श्रीनिवासं महोदयम्

anaghaṁ tvaghahaṁtāraṁ narasiṁhaṁ śriyaḥ priyam śrīpatiṁ śrīdharaṁ śrīdaṁ śrīnivāsaṁ mahodayam

"the sinless, the destroyer of sin, Narasimha, beloved of Shri, Shripati, Shridhara, Shrida, Shrinivasa, of great glory,"

Verse 13 (padma.2.87.13)

श्रीरामं माधवं मोक्षं क्षमारूपं जनार्दनम् । सर्वज्ञं सर्ववेत्तारं सर्वदं सर्वनायकम्

śrīrāmaṁ mādhavaṁ mokṣaṁ kṣamārūpaṁ janārdanam sarvajñaṁ sarvavettāraṁ sarvadaṁ sarvanāyakam

"Shri Rama, Madhava, moksha itself, the very form of patience, Janardana, the all-knowing, the knower of all, the giver of all, the leader of all,"

Verse 14 (padma.2.87.14)

हरिं मुरारिं गोविंदं पद्मनाभं प्रजापतिम् । आनंदं ज्ञानसंपन्नं ज्ञानदं ज्ञाननायकम्

hariṁ murāriṁ goviṁdaṁ padmanābhaṁ prajāpatim ānaṁdaṁ jñānasaṁpannaṁ jñānadaṁ jñānanāyakam

"Hari, Murari, Govinda, Padmanabha, Prajapati, bliss itself, endowed with knowledge, the giver of knowledge, the leader in knowledge,"

Verse 15 (padma.2.87.15)

अच्युतं सबलं चंद्रं चक्रपाणिं परावरम् । युगाधारं जगद्योनिं ब्रह्मरूपं महेश्वरम्

acyutaṁ sabalaṁ caṁdraṁ cakrapāṇiṁ parāvaram yugādhāraṁ jagadyoniṁ brahmarūpaṁ maheśvaram

"Achyuta, the mighty, Chandra, the wielder of the discus, higher than the highest, the support of the ages, the very womb of the universe, of the form of Brahma, Maheshvara,"

Verse 16 (padma.2.87.16)

मुकुंदं तं सुवैकुंठमेकरूपं जगत्पतिम् । वासुदेवं महात्मानं ब्रह्मण्यं ब्राह्मणप्रियम्

mukuṁdaṁ taṁ suvaikuṁṭhamekarūpaṁ jagatpatim vāsudevaṁ mahātmānaṁ brahmaṇyaṁ brāhmaṇapriyam

"Mukunda, very Vaikuntha itself, of one form, lord of the universe, Vasudeva the great soul, friend of the brahmins, dear to brahmins,"

Verse 17 (padma.2.87.17)

गोप्रियं गोहितं यज्ञंयज्ञांगं यज्ञवर्द्धनम् । यज्ञस्यापि सुभोक्तारं वेदवेदांगपारगम्

gopriyaṁ gohitaṁ yajñaṁyajñāṁgaṁ yajñavarddhanam yajñasyāpi subhoktāraṁ vedavedāṁgapāragam

"dear to cows, the benefactor of cows, sacrifice itself, the limb of sacrifice, the increaser of sacrifice, the very enjoyer of sacrifice, master of the Vedas and Vedangas,"

Verse 18 (padma.2.87.18)

वेदज्ञं वेदरूपं तं विद्यावासं सुरेश्वरम् । अव्यक्तं तं महाहंसं शंखपाणिं पुरातनम्

vedajñaṁ vedarūpaṁ taṁ vidyāvāsaṁ sureśvaram avyaktaṁ taṁ mahāhaṁsaṁ śaṁkhapāṇiṁ purātanam

"the knower of the Vedas, the very form of the Vedas, the abode of learning, lord of the gods, the unmanifest, the great swan, the conch-bearer, the ancient one,"

Verse 19 (padma.2.87.19)

पुरुषं पुष्कराक्षं तु वाराहं धरणीधरम् । प्रद्युम्नं कामपालं च व्यासं व्यालं महेश्वरम्

puruṣaṁ puṣkarākṣaṁ tu vārāhaṁ dharaṇīdharam pradyumnaṁ kāmapālaṁ ca vyāsaṁ vyālaṁ maheśvaram

"Purusha, Pushkaraksha, Varaha, the upholder of the earth, Pradyumna, the guardian of desire, Vyasa, the great serpent, Maheshvara,"

Verse 20 (padma.2.87.20)

सर्वसौख्यं महासौख्यं मोक्षं च परमेश्वरम् । योगरूपं महाज्ञानं योगिनां गतिदं प्रियम्

sarvasaukhyaṁ mahāsaukhyaṁ mokṣaṁ ca parameśvaram yogarūpaṁ mahājñānaṁ yogināṁ gatidaṁ priyam

"all happiness, the greatest happiness, moksha itself, the supreme lord, the very form of yoga, supreme knowledge, the beloved giver of the highest goal to yogis,"

Verse 21 (padma.2.87.21)

मुरारिं लोकपालं तं पद्महस्तं गदाधरम् । गुहावासं सर्ववासं पुण्यवासं महाभुजम्

murāriṁ lokapālaṁ taṁ padmahastaṁ gadādharam guhāvāsaṁ sarvavāsaṁ puṇyavāsaṁ mahābhujam

"Murari, the guardian of the worlds, lotus-handed, mace-bearer, the dweller in caves, the dweller in all things, the dweller in merit, the mighty-armed,"

Verse 22 (padma.2.87.22)

वृंदानाथं बृहत्कायं पावनं पापनाशनम् । गोपीनाथं गोपसखं गोपालं गोगणाश्रयम्

vṛṁdānāthaṁ bṛhatkāyaṁ pāvanaṁ pāpanāśanam gopīnāthaṁ gopasakhaṁ gopālaṁ gogaṇāśrayam

"lord of Vrinda, of vast body, the purifier, the destroyer of sin, lord of the gopis, friend of the cowherds, Gopala, the refuge of the herds of cows,"

Verse 23 (padma.2.87.23)

परात्मानं पराधीशं कपिलं कार्यमानुषम् । नमामि निश्चलं नित्यं मनोवाक्कायकर्मभिः

parātmānaṁ parādhīśaṁ kapilaṁ kāryamānuṣam namāmi niścalaṁ nityaṁ manovākkāyakarmabhiḥ

"the supreme soul, the supreme lord, Kapila, he who acts for the sake of men - I bow to him always, unwaveringly, with mind, speech, and body."

Verse 24 (padma.2.87.24)

नाम्नां शतेनापि सुपुण्यकर्ता यः स्तौति कृष्णं मनसा स्थिरेण । स याति लोकं मधुसूदनस्य विहाय लोकानिह पुण्यपूतः

nāmnāṁ śatenāpi supuṇyakartā yaḥ stauti kṛṣṇaṁ manasā sthireṇa sa yāti lokaṁ madhusūdanasya vihāya lokāniha puṇyapūtaḥ

Whoever, meritorious in deed, praises Krishna with these hundred names and a steady mind, he, purified by merit, goes to the world of Madhusudana, leaving behind all other worlds.

Verse 25 (padma.2.87.25)

नाम्नां शतं महापुण्यं सर्वपातकशोधनम् । जपेदनन्यमनसा ध्यायेद्ध्यानसमन्वितम्

nāmnāṁ śataṁ mahāpuṇyaṁ sarvapātakaśodhanam japedananyamanasā dhyāyeddhyānasamanvitam

These hundred names, of great merit, purifying every sin, should be recited with an undivided mind, meditated upon with full absorption.

Verse 26 (padma.2.87.26)

नित्यमेव नरः पुण्यैर्गंगास्नानफलं लभेत् । तस्मात्तु सुस्थिरो भूत्वा समाहितमना जपेत्

nityameva naraḥ puṇyairgaṁgāsnānaphalaṁ labhet tasmāttu susthiro bhūtvā samāhitamanā japet

The man who does this always, with merit, obtains the fruit of bathing in the Ganga; therefore, having become steady, with a composed mind, one should recite it.

Verse 27 (padma.2.87.27)

त्रिकालं च जपेन्मर्त्यो नियतो नियमे स्थितः । अश्वमेधफलं तस्य जायते नात्र संशयः

trikālaṁ ca japenmartyo niyato niyame sthitaḥ aśvamedhaphalaṁ tasya jāyate nātra saṁśayaḥ

Whatever mortal recites it three times a day, disciplined and established in his vow, obtains the fruit of the Ashvamedha sacrifice - of this there is no doubt.

Verse 28 (padma.2.87.28)

एकादश्यामुपोष्यैव पुरतो माधवस्य यः । जागरे प्रजपेन्मर्त्यस्तस्य पुण्यं वदाम्यहम्

ekādaśyāmupoṣyaiva purato mādhavasya yaḥ jāgare prajapenmartyastasya puṇyaṁ vadāmyaham

Whoever fasts on Ekadashi and recites it, staying awake through the night, before Madhava - I shall tell you that man's merit.

Verse 29 (padma.2.87.29)

पुंडरीकस्य यज्ञस्य फलमाप्नोति मानवः । तुलसीसंनिधौ स्थित्वा मनसा यो जपेन्नरः

puṁḍarīkasya yajñasya phalamāpnoti mānavaḥ tulasīsaṁnidhau sthitvā manasā yo japennaraḥ

That man obtains the fruit of the Pundarika sacrifice. Whatever man, sitting near a tulasi plant, recites it with his mind -

Verse 30 (padma.2.87.30)

राजसूयफलं भुंक्ते वर्षेणापि च मानवः । शालग्रामशिला यत्र यत्र द्वारावती शिला

rājasūyaphalaṁ bhuṁkte varṣeṇāpi ca mānavaḥ śālagrāmaśilā yatra yatra dvārāvatī śilā

- that man enjoys the fruit of the Rajasuya sacrifice for a whole year. Wherever there is a Shaligrama stone, and wherever a Dvaravati stone -

Verse 31 (padma.2.87.31)

उभयोः संनिधौ जाप्यं कर्तव्यं सुखमिच्छता । बहुसौख्यं प्रभुक्त्वैव कुलानां शतमेव च

ubhayoḥ saṁnidhau jāpyaṁ kartavyaṁ sukhamicchatā bahusaukhyaṁ prabhuktvaiva kulānāṁ śatameva ca

- one who desires happiness should recite it in the presence of both; having enjoyed abundant happiness, he saves a hundred generations -

Verse 32 (padma.2.87.32)

एकेन चाधिकं मर्त्य आत्मना सह तारयेत् । कार्तिके स्नानकर्ता यः पूजयेन्मधुसूदनम्

ekena cādhikaṁ martya ātmanā saha tārayet kārtike snānakartā yaḥ pūjayenmadhusūdanam

- and one more besides, together with himself. Whoever bathes during Kartika and worships Madhusudana,

Verse 33 (padma.2.87.33)

यः पठेत्प्रयतः स्तोत्रं प्रयाति परमां गतिम् । माघस्नायी हरिं पूज्य भक्त्या च मधुसूदनम्

yaḥ paṭhetprayataḥ stotraṁ prayāti paramāṁ gatim māghasnāyī hariṁ pūjya bhaktyā ca madhusūdanam

whoever recites this hymn with self-control attains the supreme goal. One who bathes during Magha, and with devotion worships Hari Madhusudana -

Verse 34 (padma.2.87.34)

ध्यायेच्चैव हृषीकेशं जपेद्वाथ शृणोति वा । सुरापानादिकं पापं विहाय परमं पदम्

dhyāyeccaiva hṛṣīkeśaṁ japedvātha śṛṇoti vā surāpānādikaṁ pāpaṁ vihāya paramaṁ padam

- meditates on Hrishikesha, or recites or hears this, he, leaving behind sins such as drinking liquor, [attains] the supreme abode -

Verse 35 (padma.2.87.35)

विना विघ्नं नरः पुत्र संप्रयाति जनार्दनम् । श्राद्धकाले हि यो मर्त्यो विप्राणां भुंजतां पुरः

vinā vighnaṁ naraḥ putra saṁprayāti janārdanam śrāddhakāle hi yo martyo viprāṇāṁ bhuṁjatāṁ puraḥ

- without any obstacle, my son, reaching Janardana. Whatever mortal, at the time of the shraddha rite, before brahmins who are eating -

Verse 36 (padma.2.87.36)

यो जपेच्च शतं नाम्नां स्तोत्रं पातकनाशनम् । पितरस्तुष्टिमायांति तृप्ता यांति परां गतिं

yo japecca śataṁ nāmnāṁ stotraṁ pātakanāśanam pitarastuṣṭimāyāṁti tṛptā yāṁti parāṁ gatiṁ

- recites this hundred-named, sin-destroying hymn, his ancestors attain satisfaction, and, satisfied, go to the highest goal.

Verse 37 (padma.2.87.37)

ब्राह्मणो वेदविद्वान्स्यात्क्षत्रियो विंदते महीम् । धनऋद्धिं प्रभुंजीत वैश्यो जपति यः सदा

brāhmaṇo vedavidvānsyātkṣatriyo viṁdate mahīm dhanaṛddhiṁ prabhuṁjīta vaiśyo japati yaḥ sadā

A brahmin becomes learned in the Vedas; a kshatriya obtains the earth; whatever vaishya recites it always enjoys wealth and prosperity,

Verse 38 (padma.2.87.38)

शूद्रः सुःखं प्रभुंक्ते च ब्राह्मणत्वं च गच्छति । प्राप्य जन्मांतरं वत्स वेदविद्यां प्रविंदति

śūdraḥ suḥkhaṁ prabhuṁkte ca brāhmaṇatvaṁ ca gacchati prāpya janmāṁtaraṁ vatsa vedavidyāṁ praviṁdati

a shudra enjoys happiness and attains brahminhood; having obtained his next birth, my child, he attains knowledge of the Vedas.

Verse 39 (padma.2.87.39)

सुखदं मोक्षदं स्तोत्रं जप्तव्यं च न संशयः । केशवस्य प्रसादेन सर्वसिद्धो भवेन्नरः

sukhadaṁ mokṣadaṁ stotraṁ japtavyaṁ ca na saṁśayaḥ keśavasya prasādena sarvasiddho bhavennaraḥ

This hymn, giver of happiness and liberation, must without doubt be recited; by the grace of Keshava a man becomes accomplished in all things.
