Verse 1 (padma.2.97.1)

कुंजल उवाच- एवमाकर्ण्य तां राजा मुनिना भाषितां तदा । धर्माधर्मगतिं सर्वां तं मुनिं समभाषत

kuṁjala uvāca- evamākarṇya tāṁ rājā muninā bhāṣitāṁ tadā dharmādharmagatiṁ sarvāṁ taṁ muniṁ samabhāṣata

Kunjala said: "Having thus heard that entire path of dharma and adharma spoken by the sage, the king then spoke to that sage."

Verse 2 (padma.2.97.2)

सुबाहुरुवाच- सोहं धर्मं करिष्यामि सोहं पुण्यं द्विजोत्तम । वासुदेवं जगद्योनिं यजिष्ये नितरां मुने

subāhuruvāca- sohaṁ dharmaṁ kariṣyāmi sohaṁ puṇyaṁ dvijottama vāsudevaṁ jagadyoniṁ yajiṣye nitarāṁ mune

Subahu said: "I shall practice dharma, I shall do merit, best of the twice-born; I shall worship Vasudeva, the womb of the universe, exceedingly, O sage."

Verse 3 (padma.2.97.3)

होमेन तु जपेनैव पूजयेन्मधुसूदनम् । यष्ट्वा यज्ञं तपस्तप्त्वा विष्णुलोकं स भूपतिः

homena tu japenaiva pūjayenmadhusūdanam yaṣṭvā yajñaṁ tapastaptvā viṣṇulokaṁ sa bhūpatiḥ

Through fire-offering and recitation he would worship Madhusudana; having performed sacrifice and practiced austerity, that king of the earth -

Verse 4 (padma.2.97.4)

पूजितः सर्वकामैश्च प्राप्तवान्सत्वरं मुदा । गते तस्मिन्महालोके देवदेवं न पश्यति

pūjitaḥ sarvakāmaiśca prāptavānsatvaraṁ mudā gate tasminmahāloke devadevaṁ na paśyati

- worshipped with every desire, and quickly, joyfully attained the world of Vishnu. Having gone to that great world, he does not see the god of gods.

Verse 5 (padma.2.97.5)

क्षुधा जाता महातीव्रा तृष्णा चाति प्रवर्तते । तयोश्चापि महाप्राज्ञ जीवपीडाकरा बहु

kṣudhā jātā mahātīvrā tṛṣṇā cāti pravartate tayoścāpi mahāprājña jīvapīḍākarā bahu

A most intense hunger arose, and thirst too became extreme; both of these, O greatly wise one, caused his life great affliction.

Verse 6 (padma.2.97.6)

राजापि प्रियया सार्द्धं क्षुधातृष्णाप्रपीडितः । न पश्यति हृषीकेशं दुःखेन महतान्वितः

rājāpi priyayā sārddhaṁ kṣudhātṛṣṇāprapīḍitaḥ na paśyati hṛṣīkeśaṁ duḥkhena mahatānvitaḥ

The king too, together with his beloved, afflicted by hunger and thirst, does not see Hrishikesha, overcome with great sorrow.

Verse 7 (padma.2.97.7)

सूत उवाच- एवं स दुःखितो राजा प्रियया सह सत्तम । आकुल व्याकुलो जातः पीडितः क्षुधया भृशम्

sūta uvāca- evaṁ sa duḥkhito rājā priyayā saha sattama ākula vyākulo jātaḥ pīḍitaḥ kṣudhayā bhṛśam

Suta said: "Thus that sorrowing king, O worthy one, together with his beloved, became utterly agitated, sorely afflicted by hunger."

Verse 8 (padma.2.97.8)

इतश्चेतश्च वेगैश्च धावते वसुधाधिपः । सर्वाभरणशोभांगो वस्त्रचंदनभूषितः

itaścetaśca vegaiśca dhāvate vasudhādhipaḥ sarvābharaṇaśobhāṁgo vastracaṁdanabhūṣitaḥ

That lord of the earth ran here and there swiftly; his whole body resplendent with every ornament, adorned with garments and sandal-paste,

Verse 9 (padma.2.97.9)

पुष्पमालाप्रशोभांगो हारकुंडलकंकणैः । रत्नदीप्तिप्रशोभांगः प्रययौ स महीपतिः

puṣpamālāpraśobhāṁgo hārakuṁḍalakaṁkaṇaiḥ ratnadīptipraśobhāṁgaḥ prayayau sa mahīpatiḥ

his body beautiful with garlands of flowers, adorned with necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, his body resplendent with the radiance of jewels - that lord of the earth went about thus.

Verse 10 (padma.2.97.10)

एवं दुःखसमाचारः स्तूयमानश्च पाठकैः । दुःखशोकसमाविष्टः स्वप्रियां वाक्यमब्रवीत्

evaṁ duḥkhasamācāraḥ stūyamānaśca pāṭhakaiḥ duḥkhaśokasamāviṣṭaḥ svapriyāṁ vākyamabravīt

Thus, in this suffering state, though praised by reciters, overwhelmed with sorrow and grief, he spoke this word to his beloved -

Verse 11 (padma.2.97.11)

विष्णुलोकमहं प्राप्तस्त्वया सह सुशोभने । ऋषिभिः स्तूयमानोपि विमानेनापि भामिनि

viṣṇulokamahaṁ prāptastvayā saha suśobhane ṛṣibhiḥ stūyamānopi vimānenāpi bhāmini

"'I have attained the world of Vishnu together with you, O beautiful one; praised by sages, having come even by celestial vehicle, O radiant one -'"

Verse 12 (padma.2.97.12)

कर्मणा केन मे चेयं क्षुधातीव प्रवर्द्धते । विष्णुलोकं च संप्राप्य न दृष्टो मधुसूदनः

karmaṇā kena me ceyaṁ kṣudhātīva pravarddhate viṣṇulokaṁ ca saṁprāpya na dṛṣṭo madhusūdanaḥ

"'- by what deed does this hunger of mine grow so extreme? Having reached the world of Vishnu, I have not seen Madhusudana.'"

Verse 13 (padma.2.97.13)

तत्किं हि कारणं भद्रे न भुनज्मि महत्फलम् । कर्मणाथ निजेनापि एतद्दुःखं प्रवर्त्तते

tatkiṁ hi kāraṇaṁ bhadre na bhunajmi mahatphalam karmaṇātha nijenāpi etadduḥkhaṁ pravarttate

"'What then is the reason, gracious one, that I do not enjoy that great fruit? This sorrow has arisen through some deed of my own.'"

Verse 14 (padma.2.97.14)

सैवं श्रुत्वा च तद्वाक्यं राजानमिदमब्रवीत्

saivaṁ śrutvā ca tadvākyaṁ rājānamidamabravīt

Having heard this word, she said this to the king.

Verse 15 (padma.2.97.15)

भार्योवाच- सत्यमुक्तं त्वया राजन्नास्ति धर्मस्य वै फलम् । वेदशास्त्रपुराणेषु ये पठंति च ब्राह्मणाः

bhāryovāca- satyamuktaṁ tvayā rājannāsti dharmasya vai phalam vedaśāstrapurāṇeṣu ye paṭhaṁti ca brāhmaṇāḥ

The wife said: "You have spoken truly, O king; there is indeed a fruit of dharma. Those brahmins who study the Vedas, scriptures, and Puranas -"

Verse 16 (padma.2.97.16)

दुःखशोकौ विधूयेह सर्वदोषैः प्रमुच्यते । नामोच्चारेण देवस्य विष्णोश्चैव सुचक्रिणः

duḥkhaśokau vidhūyeha sarvadoṣaiḥ pramucyate nāmoccāreṇa devasya viṣṇoścaiva sucakriṇaḥ

"- shake off sorrow and grief here, and are freed from all faults. Through the utterance of the name of the god Vishnu, wielder of the fine discus -"

Verse 17 (padma.2.97.17)

पुण्यात्मानो महाभागा ध्यायमाना जनार्दनम् । त्वयैवाराधितो देवः शंखचक्रगदाधरः

puṇyātmāno mahābhāgā dhyāyamānā janārdanam tvayaivārādhito devaḥ śaṁkhacakragadādharaḥ

"- meritorious, most fortunate souls meditate on Janardana. You too have worshipped that god, bearer of conch, discus, and mace."

Verse 18 (padma.2.97.18)

अन्नादिदानं विप्रेभ्यो न प्रदत्तं द्विजोदितम् । फलं तस्य प्रजानामि न दृष्टो मधुसूदनः

annādidānaṁ viprebhyo na pradattaṁ dvijoditam phalaṁ tasya prajānāmi na dṛṣṭo madhusūdanaḥ

"But the gift of food and other things to brahmins, as declared by the twice-born, you did not give. I know the fruit of that - Madhusudana has not been seen."

Verse 19 (padma.2.97.19)

क्षुधा मे बाधते राजंस्तृष्णा चैव प्रशोषयेत् । कुंजल उवाच- एवमुक्तस्तु प्रियया राजा चिंताकुलेंद्रियः

kṣudhā me bādhate rājaṁstṛṣṇā caiva praśoṣayet kuṁjala uvāca- evamuktastu priyayā rājā ciṁtākuleṁdriyaḥ

"'Hunger afflicts me too, O king, and thirst parches me.'" Kunjala said: "Thus addressed by his beloved, the king, his senses troubled with anxiety -"

Verse 20 (padma.2.97.20)

ततो दृष्ट्वा महापुण्यमाश्रमं श्रमनाशनम् । दिव्यवृक्षसमाकीर्णं तडागैरुपशोभितम्

tato dṛṣṭvā mahāpuṇyamāśramaṁ śramanāśanam divyavṛkṣasamākīrṇaṁ taḍāgairupaśobhitam

- then saw a most holy hermitage, a dispeller of fatigue, filled with divine trees, adorned with pools.

Verse 21 (padma.2.97.21)

वापीकुंडतडागैश्च पुण्यतोयप्रपूरितैः । हंसकारंडवाकीर्णं कह्लारैरुपशोभितम्

vāpīkuṁḍataḍāgaiśca puṇyatoyaprapūritaiḥ haṁsakāraṁḍavākīrṇaṁ kahlārairupaśobhitam

With step-wells, ponds, and pools filled with holy water, thronged with swans and karandava birds, adorned with kahlara flowers.

Verse 22 (padma.2.97.22)

आश्रमः शोभते पुत्र मुनिभिस्तत्त्ववेदिभिः । दिव्यवृक्षसमाकीर्णं मृगव्रातैश्च शोभितम्

āśramaḥ śobhate putra munibhistattvavedibhiḥ divyavṛkṣasamākīrṇaṁ mṛgavrātaiśca śobhitam

That hermitage, my son, shone with sages who knew the truth, filled with divine trees, adorned with herds of deer.

Verse 23 (padma.2.97.23)

नानापुष्पसमाकीर्णं हृद्यगंधसमाकुलम् । द्विजसिद्धैः समाकीर्णमृषिशिष्यैः समाकुलम्

nānāpuṣpasamākīrṇaṁ hṛdyagaṁdhasamākulam dvijasiddhaiḥ samākīrṇamṛṣiśiṣyaiḥ samākulam

Filled with various flowers, thronged with heart-pleasing fragrance, filled with twice-born siddhas, thronged with the disciples of sages.

Verse 24 (padma.2.97.24)

योगियोगेंद्र संघुष्टं देववृंदैरलंकृतम् । कदलीवनसंबाधैः सुफलैः परिशोभितम्

yogiyogeṁdra saṁghuṣṭaṁ devavṛṁdairalaṁkṛtam kadalīvanasaṁbādhaiḥ suphalaiḥ pariśobhitam

Resounding with yogis and lords of yoga, adorned with hosts of gods, crowded with banana-groves, adorned with fine fruits.

Verse 25 (padma.2.97.25)

नानावृक्षसमाकीर्णं सर्वकामसमन्वितम् । श्रीखंडैश्चारुगंधैश्च सुफलैः शोभितं सदा

nānāvṛkṣasamākīrṇaṁ sarvakāmasamanvitam śrīkhaṁḍaiścārugaṁdhaiśca suphalaiḥ śobhitaṁ sadā

Filled with various trees, endowed with every desire, ever adorned with the lovely fragrance of sandalwood and fine fruits.

Verse 26 (padma.2.97.26)

एवं पुण्यं समाकीर्णं ब्रह्मलक्ष्मसमायुतम् । स सुबाहुस्ततो राजा तया सुप्रियया सह

evaṁ puṇyaṁ samākīrṇaṁ brahmalakṣmasamāyutam sa subāhustato rājā tayā supriyayā saha

Thus that holy place, endowed with the very marks of Brahman - King Subahu, then, together with his beloved,

Verse 27 (padma.2.97.27)

प्रविवेश महापुण्यं तद्वनं सर्वकामदम् । भासमानो दिशः सर्वा यत्रास्ते सूर्यसंनिभः

praviveśa mahāpuṇyaṁ tadvanaṁ sarvakāmadam bhāsamāno diśaḥ sarvā yatrāste sūryasaṁnibhaḥ

- entered that most holy forest, giver of every desire, where one resembling the sun sat, illuminating all directions,

Verse 28 (padma.2.97.28)

राजमानो महादीप्त्या परया सूर्यसंनिभः । योगासनसमारूढो योगपट्टेन संवृतः

rājamāno mahādīptyā parayā sūryasaṁnibhaḥ yogāsanasamārūḍho yogapaṭṭena saṁvṛtaḥ

- shining with supreme, great splendor, like the sun, seated in a yogic posture, wrapped in a yoga-band -

Verse 29 (padma.2.97.29)

वामदेवऋषिश्रेष्ठो वैष्णवानां वरस्तथा । ध्यायमानो हृषीकेशं भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदायकम्

vāmadevaṛṣiśreṣṭho vaiṣṇavānāṁ varastathā dhyāyamāno hṛṣīkeśaṁ bhuktimuktipradāyakam

- the sage Vamadeva, foremost among sages, and best among Vaishnavas too, meditating on Hrishikesha, the giver of both worldly enjoyment and liberation.

Verse 30 (padma.2.97.30)

वामदेवं महात्मानं तं दृष्ट्वा मुनिसत्तमम् । त्वरं गत्वा प्रणम्यैव स राजा प्रियया सह

vāmadevaṁ mahātmānaṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā munisattamam tvaraṁ gatvā praṇamyaiva sa rājā priyayā saha

Having seen that great soul, that most excellent sage Vamadeva, the king, together with his beloved, went swiftly and bowed.

Verse 31 (padma.2.97.31)

वामदेवस्ततो दृष्ट्वा प्रणतं राजसत्तमम् । आशीर्भिरभिनंद्यैव राजानं प्रिययान्वितम्

vāmadevastato dṛṣṭvā praṇataṁ rājasattamam āśīrbhirabhinaṁdyaiva rājānaṁ priyayānvitam

Vamadeva then, seeing that most excellent king bowing, together with his beloved, honored him with blessings,

Verse 32 (padma.2.97.32)

उपवेश्यासने पुण्ये सुबाहुं राजसत्तमम् । आसनादि ततः पाद्यैरर्घपूजादिभिस्तथा

upaveśyāsane puṇye subāhuṁ rājasattamam āsanādi tataḥ pādyairarghapūjādibhistathā

- seating that most excellent king Subahu on a holy seat; then, with a seat and other honors, with water for the feet, arghya, and worship -

Verse 33 (padma.2.97.33)

मुनिना पूजितो भूपः प्रियया सह चागतः । अथ पप्रच्छ राजानं महाभागवतोत्तमम्

muninā pūjito bhūpaḥ priyayā saha cāgataḥ atha papraccha rājānaṁ mahābhāgavatottamam

- the king, who had come together with his beloved, was honored by the sage. Then he asked the king, that most excellent devotee of Bhagavan.

Verse 34 (padma.2.97.34)

वामदेव उवाच- त्वामहं विष्णुधर्मज्ञं विष्णुभक्तं नरोत्तमम् । जाने ज्ञानेन राजेंद्र दिव्येन चोलभूमिपम्

vāmadeva uvāca- tvāmahaṁ viṣṇudharmajñaṁ viṣṇubhaktaṁ narottamam jāne jñānena rājeṁdra divyena colabhūmipam

Vamadeva said: "I know you, O king of kings, through divine knowledge, to be one who knows the dharma of Vishnu, a devotee of Vishnu, best of men, and king of the land of Chola."

Verse 35 (padma.2.97.35)

निरामयश्चागतोसि तार्क्ष्यया भार्यया सह । राजोवाच- निरामयश्चागतोऽस्मि प्राप्तो विष्णोः परं पदम्

nirāmayaścāgatosi tārkṣyayā bhāryayā saha rājovāca- nirāmayaścāgato'smi prāpto viṣṇoḥ paraṁ padam

"You have come, free of affliction, together with your wife." The king said: "I have come free of affliction, having attained the supreme abode of Vishnu."

Verse 36 (padma.2.97.36)

मया हि परया भक्त्या देवदेवो जनार्दनः । आराधितो जगन्नाथो भक्तिप्रीतः सुरेश्वरम्

mayā hi parayā bhaktyā devadevo janārdanaḥ ārādhito jagannātho bhaktiprītaḥ sureśvaram

"With the highest devotion I worshipped the god of gods, Janardana, lord of the universe; pleased with devotion, that lord of the gods -"

Verse 37 (padma.2.97.37)

कस्मात्पश्याम्यहं तात न देवं कमलापतिम् । क्षुधा मे बाधते तात तृष्णातीव सुदारुणा

kasmātpaśyāmyahaṁ tāta na devaṁ kamalāpatim kṣudhā me bādhate tāta tṛṣṇātīva sudāruṇā

"- yet, father, why do I not see that god, lord of Kamala? Hunger afflicts me, father, and a most terrible thirst."

Verse 38 (padma.2.97.38)

ताभ्यां शांतिं न गच्छाव सुखं विंदाव नैव च । एतन्मेकारणं दुःखं संजातं मुनिसत्तम

tābhyāṁ śāṁtiṁ na gacchāva sukhaṁ viṁdāva naiva ca etanmekāraṇaṁ duḥkhaṁ saṁjātaṁ munisattama

"By these two we find no peace, nor any happiness at all. This, O best of sages, is the cause of the sorrow that has arisen in me."

Verse 39 (padma.2.97.39)

तन्मे त्वं कारणं ब्रूहि प्रसादात्सुमुखो भव । वामदेव उवाच- त्वं तु भक्तोसि राजेंद्र श्रीकृष्णस्य सदैव हि

tanme tvaṁ kāraṇaṁ brūhi prasādātsumukho bhava vāmadeva uvāca- tvaṁ tu bhaktosi rājeṁdra śrīkṛṣṇasya sadaiva hi

"Tell me that cause; be gracious and favorable toward me." Vamadeva said: "You are indeed, O king of kings, ever a devotee of Shri Krishna."

Verse 40 (padma.2.97.40)

आराधितस्त्वया भक्त्या परया मधुसूदनः । भक्त्योपचारैः स्नानाद्यैर्गंधपुष्पादिभिस्तथा

ārādhitastvayā bhaktyā parayā madhusūdanaḥ bhaktyopacāraiḥ snānādyairgaṁdhapuṣpādibhistathā

"You worshipped Madhusudana with the highest devotion, with devoted services such as bathing, and with fragrance and flowers too;"

Verse 41 (padma.2.97.41)

न पूजितोऽथ नैवेद्यैः फलैश्च जगतांपतिः । दशमीं प्राप्य राजेंद्र त्वयैव च सदा कृतम्

na pūjito'tha naivedyaiḥ phalaiśca jagatāṁpatiḥ daśamīṁ prāpya rājeṁdra tvayaiva ca sadā kṛtam

"- but the lord of the universe was not worshipped with food-offerings and fruits. Having reached the tenth day, O king of kings, you always did this -"

Verse 42 (padma.2.97.42)

एकभक्तं न दत्तं तु ब्राह्मणाय सुभोजनम् । एकादशीं तु संप्राप्य न कृतं भोजनं त्वया

ekabhaktaṁ na dattaṁ tu brāhmaṇāya subhojanam ekādaśīṁ tu saṁprāpya na kṛtaṁ bhojanaṁ tvayā

"- you did not give a single proper meal to a brahmin. Having reached Ekadashi, you did not perform the prescribed feeding;"

Verse 43 (padma.2.97.43)

विष्णुमुद्दिश्य विप्राय न दत्तं भोजनं त्वया । अन्नं चामृतरूपेण पृथिव्यां संस्थितं सदा

viṣṇumuddiśya viprāya na dattaṁ bhojanaṁ tvayā annaṁ cāmṛtarūpeṇa pṛthivyāṁ saṁsthitaṁ sadā

"in honor of Vishnu, you did not give food to a brahmin. Food, in the very form of ambrosia, is ever established upon the earth."

Verse 44 (padma.2.97.44)

अन्नदानं विशेषेण कदा दत्तं न हि त्वया । ओषध्यश्च महाराज नानाभेदास्तु ताः शृणु

annadānaṁ viśeṣeṇa kadā dattaṁ na hi tvayā oṣadhyaśca mahārāja nānābhedāstu tāḥ śṛṇu

"When did you ever give the gift of food especially? And, great king, hear of those medicinal plants of various kinds -"

Verse 45 (padma.2.97.45)

कटु तिक्त कषायाश्च मधुराम्लाश्च क्षारकाः । हिंग्वाद्योपस्कराः सर्वे नानारूपाश्च भूपते

kaṭu tikta kaṣāyāśca madhurāmlāśca kṣārakāḥ hiṁgvādyopaskarāḥ sarve nānārūpāśca bhūpate

"- pungent, bitter, astringent, sweet, sour, and salty, hing and other seasonings, of various forms, O king -"

Verse 46 (padma.2.97.46)

अमृताज्जज्ञिरे सर्वा ओषध्यः पुष्टिहेतवः । अन्नमेव सुसंस्कृत्य औषधव्यंजनान्वितम्

amṛtājjajñire sarvā oṣadhyaḥ puṣṭihetavaḥ annameva susaṁskṛtya auṣadhavyaṁjanānvitam

"- all these herbs, causes of nourishment, were born from ambrosia. Having duly prepared food itself, seasoned with these medicinal herbs -"

Verse 47 (padma.2.97.47)

देवेभ्यो विष्णुरूपेभ्य इति संकल्प्य दीयते । पितृभ्यो विष्णुरूपेभ्यो हस्ते च ब्राह्मणस्य हि

devebhyo viṣṇurūpebhya iti saṁkalpya dīyate pitṛbhyo viṣṇurūpebhyo haste ca brāhmaṇasya hi

"- it is given, with the resolve, 'To the gods in the form of Vishnu'; to the ancestors in the form of Vishnu, and into the hand of a brahmin,"

Verse 48 (padma.2.97.48)

अतिथिभ्यस्ततो दत्वा परिजनं प्रभोजयेत् । स्वयं तु भुंजते पश्चात्तदन्नममृतोपमम्

atithibhyastato datvā parijanaṁ prabhojayet svayaṁ tu bhuṁjate paścāttadannamamṛtopamam

"and having given to guests, one should then feed one's household; only afterward should one eat oneself - that food, like unto ambrosia."

Verse 49 (padma.2.97.49)

प्रेत्य दुःखं न चैवास्ति तस्य सौख्यं तु भूपते । ब्राह्मणाः पितरो देवाः क्षत्ररूपाश्च भूपते

pretya duḥkhaṁ na caivāsti tasya saukhyaṁ tu bhūpate brāhmaṇāḥ pitaro devāḥ kṣatrarūpāśca bhūpate

"For him there is no sorrow after death - only happiness, O king. Brahmins, ancestors, and gods, for a kshatriya, O king -"

Verse 50 (padma.2.97.50)

यथा हि कर्षकः कश्चित्सुकृषिं कुरुते सदा । तद्वन्मर्त्यः कृषिं कुर्यात्क्षेत्रे विप्रास्यके नृप

yathā hi karṣakaḥ kaścitsukṛṣiṁ kurute sadā tadvanmartyaḥ kṛṣiṁ kuryātkṣetre viprāsyake nṛpa

"- just as some farmer always cultivates his fields well, so, O king, should a mortal cultivate, in the field that is the brahmin's mouth -"

Verse 51 (padma.2.97.51)

स्वभावलांगलेनापि श्रद्धा शस्त्रेण भेदयेत् । वृषभौ तु मतौ नित्यं बुद्धिश्चैव तपस्तथा

svabhāvalāṁgalenāpi śraddhā śastreṇa bhedayet vṛṣabhau tu matau nityaṁ buddhiścaiva tapastathā

"- with the plough of his own nature, breaking the ground with the plowshare of faith; intellect and austerity are ever considered the two oxen,"

Verse 52 (padma.2.97.52)

सत्यज्ञानानुभावीशः शुद्धात्मा तु प्रतोदकः । विप्रनाम्नि महाक्षेत्रे नमस्कारैर्विसर्जयेत्

satyajñānānubhāvīśaḥ śuddhātmā tu pratodakaḥ vipranāmni mahākṣetre namaskārairvisarjayet

"- truth, knowledge, and awareness of the Lord, and a pure soul as the goad; in the great field named 'brahmin,' let one release the seed with salutations,"

Verse 53 (padma.2.97.53)

स्फोटयेत्कल्मषं नित्यं कृषिको हि यथा नृप । क्षेत्रस्य उद्यमे युक्तो विष्णुकामः प्रसादयेत्

sphoṭayetkalmaṣaṁ nityaṁ kṛṣiko hi yathā nṛpa kṣetrasya udyame yukto viṣṇukāmaḥ prasādayet

"- he should always break up the clods of sin, just as a farmer would, O king. Devoted to the cultivation of that field, one desiring Vishnu should propitiate brahmins,"

Verse 54 (padma.2.97.54)

तद्वद्वाक्यैः शुभैः पुण्यैर्विप्रांश्चापि प्रसादयेत् । पर्वतीर्थाप्तिकालश्च घनरूपोभिवर्षणे

tadvadvākyaiḥ śubhaiḥ puṇyairviprāṁścāpi prasādayet parvatīrthāptikālaśca ghanarūpobhivarṣaṇe

"- likewise with auspicious, meritorious words too. Just as, when the time for a festival tirtha comes, the clouds take shape to rain down -"

Verse 55 (padma.2.97.55)

वप्तुकामो भवेत्क्षेत्री ततः क्षेत्रे प्रवापयेत् । तद्वद्भूपप्रसन्नाय विप्राय परिदीयते

vaptukāmo bhavetkṣetrī tataḥ kṣetre pravāpayet tadvadbhūpaprasannāya viprāya paridīyate

"- the farmer, wishing to sow, then sows in his field; likewise a gift is given to a brahmin who is pleased with the king."

Verse 56 (padma.2.97.56)

क्षेत्रस्य उप्तबीजस्य यथा क्षेत्री प्रभुंजति । फलमेव महाराज तथा दाता भुनक्ति च

kṣetrasya uptabījasya yathā kṣetrī prabhuṁjati phalameva mahārāja tathā dātā bhunakti ca

"Just as a farmer enjoys the fruit of the seed sown in his field, so too, great king, the giver enjoys that very fruit."

Verse 57 (padma.2.97.57)

प्रेत्य चात्रैव नित्यं च तृप्तो भवति नान्यथा । ब्राह्मणाः पितरो देवाः क्षेत्ररूपा न संशयः

pretya cātraiva nityaṁ ca tṛpto bhavati nānyathā brāhmaṇāḥ pitaro devāḥ kṣetrarūpā na saṁśayaḥ

"After death, and here too, he is ever satisfied - not otherwise. Brahmins, ancestors, and gods are, without doubt, in the form of a field -"

Verse 58 (padma.2.97.58)

मानवानां महाराज वापिताः प्रददंति च । फलमेवं न संदेहो यादृशं तादृशं ध्रुवम्

mānavānāṁ mahārāja vāpitāḥ pradadaṁti ca phalamevaṁ na saṁdeho yādṛśaṁ tādṛśaṁ dhruvam

"- for men, great king; what is sown they yield back as fruit; there is no doubt of this - it is exactly as it was sown."

Verse 59 (padma.2.97.59)

कटुकाद्धि न जायेत राजन्मधुर एव च । तद्वच्च मधुराख्याच्च न जायेत्कटुकः पुनः

kaṭukāddhi na jāyeta rājanmadhura eva ca tadvacca madhurākhyācca na jāyetkaṭukaḥ punaḥ

"From a bitter seed, O king, a sweet fruit is never born; and likewise from what is called sweet, a bitter fruit is never born again."

Verse 60 (padma.2.97.60)

यादृशं वपते बीजं तादृशं फलमश्नुते । न वापयति यः क्षेत्रं न स भुंजति तत्फलम्

yādṛśaṁ vapate bījaṁ tādṛśaṁ phalamaśnute na vāpayati yaḥ kṣetraṁ na sa bhuṁjati tatphalam

"Whatever seed is sown, that same fruit is enjoyed. He who does not sow his field does not enjoy its fruit."

Verse 61 (padma.2.97.61)

तद्वद्विप्राश्च देवाश्च पितरः क्षेत्ररूपिणः । दर्शयंति फलं राजन्दत्तस्यापि न संशयः

tadvadviprāśca devāśca pitaraḥ kṣetrarūpiṇaḥ darśayaṁti phalaṁ rājandattasyāpi na saṁśayaḥ

"Likewise brahmins, gods, and ancestors, in the form of a field, show forth the fruit of what is given, O king - without doubt."

Verse 62 (padma.2.97.62)

यादृशं हि कृतं कर्म त्वयैव च शुभाशुभम् । तादृशं भुंक्ष्व वै राजन्नन्यथा तन्न जायते

yādṛśaṁ hi kṛtaṁ karma tvayaiva ca śubhāśubham tādṛśaṁ bhuṁkṣva vai rājannanyathā tanna jāyate

"Whatever deed, good or bad, you yourself have done, O king, that very fruit you must enjoy; it cannot happen otherwise."

Verse 63 (padma.2.97.63)

न पुरा देवविप्रेभ्यः पितृभ्यश्च कदाचन । मिष्टान्नपानमेवापि दत्तं सुमनसा तदा

na purā devaviprebhyaḥ pitṛbhyaśca kadācana miṣṭānnapānamevāpi dattaṁ sumanasā tadā

"Formerly, to gods, brahmins, or ancestors, you never at any time, with a gracious mind, gave sweet food and drink."

Verse 64 (padma.2.97.64)

सुभोज्यैर्भोजनैर्मृष्टैर्मधुरैश्चोष्यपेयकैः । सुभक्ष्यैरात्मना भुक्तं कस्मै दत्तं न च त्वया

subhojyairbhojanairmṛṣṭairmadhuraiścoṣyapeyakaiḥ subhakṣyairātmanā bhuktaṁ kasmai dattaṁ na ca tvayā

"You yourself ate fine dishes, delicious food, sweet things, drinks, and fine delicacies - to whom did you ever give any of it?"

Verse 65 (padma.2.97.65)

स्वशरीरं त्वया पुष्टमन्नैरमृतसन्निभैः । यस्मात्कृतं महाराज तस्मात्क्षुधा प्रवर्तते

svaśarīraṁ tvayā puṣṭamannairamṛtasannibhaiḥ yasmātkṛtaṁ mahārāja tasmātkṣudhā pravartate

"You nourished your own body with foods like ambrosia; because you did this, great king, hunger now arises."

Verse 66 (padma.2.97.66)

कर्मैव कारणं राजन्नराणां सुखदुःखयोः । जन्ममृत्य्वोर्महाभाग भुंक्ष्व तत्कर्मणः फलम्

karmaiva kāraṇaṁ rājannarāṇāṁ sukhaduḥkhayoḥ janmamṛtyvormahābhāga bhuṁkṣva tatkarmaṇaḥ phalam

"Karma alone, O king, is the cause of men's happiness and sorrow, of birth and death, most fortunate one; enjoy now the fruit of that karma."

Verse 67 (padma.2.97.67)

पूर्वेपि च महात्मानो दिवं प्राप्ताः स्वकर्मणा । पुनः प्रयाता भूर्लोकं कर्मणः क्षयकालतः

pūrvepi ca mahātmāno divaṁ prāptāḥ svakarmaṇā punaḥ prayātā bhūrlokaṁ karmaṇaḥ kṣayakālataḥ

"Even great souls of former times reached heaven through their own karma, and returned again to the earthly world when their karma was exhausted."

Verse 68 (padma.2.97.68)

नलो भगीरथश्चैव विश्वामित्रो युधिष्ठिरः । कर्मणैव हि संप्राप्ताः स्वर्गं राजन्स्वकालतः

nalo bhagīrathaścaiva viśvāmitro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ karmaṇaiva hi saṁprāptāḥ svargaṁ rājansvakālataḥ

"Nala, and Bhagiratha, and Vishvamitra, and Yudhishthira - through karma alone did they attain heaven, O king, each in their own time."

Verse 69 (padma.2.97.69)

दिष्टं हि प्राक्तनं कर्म तेन दुःखं सुखं लभेत् । तदुल्लंघयितुं राजन्कः समर्थोपि हीश्वरः

diṣṭaṁ hi prāktanaṁ karma tena duḥkhaṁ sukhaṁ labhet tadullaṁghayituṁ rājankaḥ samarthopi hīśvaraḥ

"Karma performed before is what is allotted; by it one obtains sorrow or happiness. Who indeed, O king, is capable of transgressing it, even were he the Lord himself?"

Verse 70 (padma.2.97.70)

अथ तस्मान्नृपश्रेष्ठ स्वर्गतस्यापि तेऽभवत् । क्षुत्तृष्णासंभवो वेगस्ततो दुष्टं हि कर्म ते

atha tasmānnṛpaśreṣṭha svargatasyāpi te'bhavat kṣuttṛṣṇāsaṁbhavo vegastato duṣṭaṁ hi karma te

"So, O best of kings, this rush of hunger and thirst arose even for you, though you had reached heaven - therefore it is your own evil karma."

Verse 71 (padma.2.97.71)

यदि ते क्षुत्प्रतीकारो ह्यभीष्टो नृपसत्तम । तद्गत्वा भुंक्ष्व कायं स्वमानंदारण्यसंस्थितम्

yadi te kṣutpratīkāro hyabhīṣṭo nṛpasattama tadgatvā bhuṁkṣva kāyaṁ svamānaṁdāraṇyasaṁsthitam

"If you desire a remedy for your hunger, O best of kings, then go and enjoy your own body, established in the Ananda forest."

Verse 72 (padma.2.97.72)

तव चेयं महाराज्ञी क्षुत्क्षामातीव दृश्यते । सुबाहुरुवाच- कियत्कालमिदं कर्म कर्तव्यं प्रियया सह

tava ceyaṁ mahārājñī kṣutkṣāmātīva dṛśyate subāhuruvāca- kiyatkālamidaṁ karma kartavyaṁ priyayā saha

"Great king, this queen of yours too appears exceedingly emaciated with hunger." Subahu said: "For how long must this deed be performed, together with my beloved?"

Verse 73 (padma.2.97.73)

तन्मे ब्रूहि महाभागानुग्रहो दृश्यते कदा । कस्य दानेन किं पुण्यं द्रव्यस्य मुनिसत्तम

tanme brūhi mahābhāgānugraho dṛśyate kadā kasya dānena kiṁ puṇyaṁ dravyasya munisattama

"Tell me that, most fortunate one; when will grace be shown? By the gift of what substance, O best of sages, is what merit gained?"

Verse 74 (padma.2.97.74)

तत्प्रब्रूहि महाप्राज्ञ यदि तुष्टोसि सांप्रतम् । वामदेव उवाच- अन्नदानान्महासौख्यमुदकस्य महामते

tatprabrūhi mahāprājña yadi tuṣṭosi sāṁpratam vāmadeva uvāca- annadānānmahāsaukhyamudakasya mahāmate

"Tell me that, greatly wise one, if you are pleased with me now." Vamadeva said: "From the gift of food comes great happiness, and from the gift of water, O wise one -"

Verse 75 (padma.2.97.75)

भुंजंति मर्त्याः स्वर्गं वै पीड्यंते नैव पातकैः । यदा दानं न दत्तं तु भवेदपि हि मानवैः

bhuṁjaṁti martyāḥ svargaṁ vai pīḍyaṁte naiva pātakaiḥ yadā dānaṁ na dattaṁ tu bhavedapi hi mānavaiḥ

"- mortals enjoy heaven, and are not afflicted by sins. When men fail to give any gift at all -"

Verse 76 (padma.2.97.76)

मृत्युकालेपि संप्राप्ते दानं सर्वे ददंति च । आदावेव प्रदातव्यमन्नं चोदकसंयुतम्

mṛtyukālepi saṁprāpte dānaṁ sarve dadaṁti ca ādāveva pradātavyamannaṁ codakasaṁyutam

"- then, even at the time of death, all give some gift. Food, together with water, should be given first of all;"

Verse 77 (padma.2.97.77)

सुच्छत्रोपानहौ दद्याज्जलपात्रं सुशोभनम् । भूमिं सुकांचनं धेनुमष्टौ दानानि योऽर्पयेत्

succhatropānahau dadyājjalapātraṁ suśobhanam bhūmiṁ sukāṁcanaṁ dhenumaṣṭau dānāni yo'rpayet

"one should give a fine umbrella and sandals, and a beautiful water-vessel too. Whoever offers these eight gifts, including land, fine gold, and a cow -"

Verse 78 (padma.2.97.78)

स्वर्गे न जायते तस्य क्षुधातृष्णादिसंभवः । क्षुधा न बाधते राजन्नन्नदानात्स तृप्तिमान्

svarge na jāyate tasya kṣudhātṛṣṇādisaṁbhavaḥ kṣudhā na bādhate rājannannadānātsa tṛptimān

"- for him, in heaven, no arising of hunger, thirst, and the like occurs. Through the gift of food, O king, he becomes satisfied and is not afflicted by hunger."

Verse 79 (padma.2.97.79)

तृष्णा तीव्रा नहि स्याद्वै तृप्तो भवति सर्वदा । पादुकायाः प्रदानेन च्छत्रदानेन भूपते

tṛṣṇā tīvrā nahi syādvai tṛpto bhavati sarvadā pādukāyāḥ pradānena cchatradānena bhūpate

"His thirst never becomes intense; he remains ever content. Through the gift of sandals and the gift of an umbrella, O king -"

Verse 80 (padma.2.97.80)

छायामाप्नोति दाता वै वाहनं च नृपोत्तम । उपानहप्रदानेन अन्यदेवं वदाम्यहम्

chāyāmāpnoti dātā vai vāhanaṁ ca nṛpottama upānahapradānena anyadevaṁ vadāmyaham

"- the giver, O best of kings, obtains shade, and a mount too. Through the gift of sandals - I tell you this further -"

Verse 81 (padma.2.97.81)

भूमिदानान्महाभाग सर्वकामानवाप्नुयात् । गोदानेन महाराज रसैः पुष्टो भवेत्सदा

bhūmidānānmahābhāga sarvakāmānavāpnuyāt godānena mahārāja rasaiḥ puṣṭo bhavetsadā

"- through the gift of land, O most fortunate one, one obtains the fulfillment of every desire; through the gift of a cow, great king, one is always nourished with its rich essences,"

Verse 82 (padma.2.97.82)

सर्वान्भोगान्प्रभुंजानः स्वर्गलोके वसेन्नरः । तृप्तो भवति वै दाता गोदानेन न संशयः

sarvānbhogānprabhuṁjānaḥ svargaloke vasennaraḥ tṛpto bhavati vai dātā godānena na saṁśayaḥ

"- enjoying every pleasure, dwelling in the heavenly world. Through the gift of a cow, the giver becomes satisfied - without doubt,"

Verse 83 (padma.2.97.83)

नीरुजः सुखसंपन्नः संतुष्टस्तु धनान्वितः । कांचनेन सुवर्णस्तु जायते नात्र संशयः

nīrujaḥ sukhasaṁpannaḥ saṁtuṣṭastu dhanānvitaḥ kāṁcanena suvarṇastu jāyate nātra saṁśayaḥ

"- free from disease, endowed with happiness, content, and possessed of wealth. Through gold, one becomes golden oneself - of this there is no doubt."

Verse 84 (padma.2.97.84)

श्रीमांश्च रूपवांस्त्यागी रत्नभोक्ता भवेन्नरः । मृत्युकाले तु संप्राप्ते तिलदानं प्रयच्छति

śrīmāṁśca rūpavāṁstyāgī ratnabhoktā bhavennaraḥ mṛtyukāle tu saṁprāpte tiladānaṁ prayacchati

"One becomes prosperous, handsome, generous, and an enjoyer of gems. When death's time arrives, whoever gives the gift of sesame -"

Verse 85 (padma.2.97.85)

सर्वभोगपतिर्भूत्वा विष्णुलोकं प्रयाति सः । एवं दानविशेषेण प्राप्यते परमं सुखम्

sarvabhogapatirbhūtvā viṣṇulokaṁ prayāti saḥ evaṁ dānaviśeṣeṇa prāpyate paramaṁ sukham

"- becomes lord of every pleasure and goes to the world of Vishnu. Thus, through these particular gifts, the highest happiness is obtained."

Verse 86 (padma.2.97.86)

गोदानं भूमिदानं तु अन्नोदके च वै त्वया । जीवमानेन राजेंद्र न दत्तं ब्राह्मणाय वै

godānaṁ bhūmidānaṁ tu annodake ca vai tvayā jīvamānena rājeṁdra na dattaṁ brāhmaṇāya vai

"The gift of a cow, the gift of land, and of food and water, O king of kings - these, while living,"

Verse 87 (padma.2.97.87)

मृत्युकालेपि नो दत्तं तस्मात्क्षुधा प्रवर्तते । एतत्ते कारणं प्रोक्तं जातं कर्मवशानुगम्

mṛtyukālepi no dattaṁ tasmātkṣudhā pravartate etatte kāraṇaṁ proktaṁ jātaṁ karmavaśānugam

"- you never gave to a brahmin; nor did you give them even at the time of death - therefore hunger now arises. This is the cause I have declared to you, which has come about through the sway of your own karma."

Verse 88 (padma.2.97.88)

यादृशं तु कृतं कर्म तादृशं परिभुज्यते । सुबाहुरुवाच- कथं क्षुधा प्रशांतिं मे प्रयाति मुनिसत्तम

yādṛśaṁ tu kṛtaṁ karma tādṛśaṁ paribhujyate subāhuruvāca- kathaṁ kṣudhā praśāṁtiṁ me prayāti munisattama

"Whatever deed is done, that same is what one must experience." Subahu said: "How, O best of sages, might this hunger of mine be pacified?"

Verse 89 (padma.2.97.89)

अनया शोषितः कायो ह्यतीव परिदूयते । क्षुधां प्रति द्विजश्रेष्ठ प्रायश्चित्तं वदस्व नौः

anayā śoṣitaḥ kāyo hyatīva paridūyate kṣudhāṁ prati dvijaśreṣṭha prāyaścittaṁ vadasva nauḥ

"My body, dried up by it, is exceedingly tormented. O best of the twice-born, tell us the atonement against hunger."

Verse 90 (padma.2.97.90)

कर्मणश्चास्यघोरस्य यथा शांतिर्भवेन्मम । वामदेव उवाच- प्रायश्चित्तं न चैवास्ति ऋतेभोगान्नृपोत्तम

karmaṇaścāsyaghorasya yathā śāṁtirbhavenmama vāmadeva uvāca- prāyaścittaṁ na caivāsti ṛtebhogānnṛpottama

"Tell us how this terrible deed of mine may find peace." Vamadeva said: "There is no atonement, O best of kings, other than experiencing it."

Verse 91 (padma.2.97.91)

कर्मणोस्य फलं सर्वं भवान्स्वस्थः प्रभोक्ष्यति । यत्र ते पतितः कायः प्रियायाश्चैव भूपते

karmaṇosya phalaṁ sarvaṁ bhavānsvasthaḥ prabhokṣyati yatra te patitaḥ kāyaḥ priyāyāścaiva bhūpate

"You shall enjoy the whole fruit of this deed with a composed mind. Where your body has fallen, and your beloved's too, O king -"

Verse 92 (padma.2.97.92)

युवाभ्यां हि प्रगंतव्यमितश्चैव न संशयः । उभाभ्यामपि भोक्तव्यं कायमक्षयमेव तत्

yuvābhyāṁ hi pragaṁtavyamitaścaiva na saṁśayaḥ ubhābhyāmapi bhoktavyaṁ kāyamakṣayameva tat

"- you two must indeed go there from here, without doubt. Both of you must enjoy that imperishable body -"

Verse 93 (padma.2.97.93)

स्वंस्वं राजन्न संदेहस्त्वया वै प्रियया सह । राजोवाच- कियत्कालं प्रभोक्तव्यं मयैवं प्रियया सह

svaṁsvaṁ rājanna saṁdehastvayā vai priyayā saha rājovāca- kiyatkālaṁ prabhoktavyaṁ mayaivaṁ priyayā saha

"- your very own, O king, without doubt, together with your beloved." The king said: "For how long must I thus enjoy it, together with my beloved?"

Verse 94 (padma.2.97.94)

तदादिश महाभाग प्रमाणं तद्वचो मम । वामदेव उवाच- वासुदेव महास्तोत्रं महापातकनाशनम्

tadādiśa mahābhāga pramāṇaṁ tadvaco mama vāmadeva uvāca- vāsudeva mahāstotraṁ mahāpātakanāśanam

"Tell me that, most fortunate one; let your word be my measure." Vamadeva said: "The great hymn called Vasudeva, destroyer of great sins -"

Verse 95 (padma.2.97.95)

यदा त्वं श्रोष्यसे पुण्यं तदा मोक्षं प्रयास्यसि । एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं गच्छ राजन्प्रभुंक्ष्वहि

yadā tvaṁ śroṣyase puṇyaṁ tadā mokṣaṁ prayāsyasi etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ gaccha rājanprabhuṁkṣvahi

"- when you hear that meritorious hymn, then you shall attain liberation. All this I have declared to you; go now, O king, and undergo this experience."

Verse 96 (padma.2.97.96)

एवं श्रुत्वा ततो राजा भार्यया सह वै पुनः । स्वशरीरस्य वै मांसं भक्षते प्रियया सह

evaṁ śrutvā tato rājā bhāryayā saha vai punaḥ svaśarīrasya vai māṁsaṁ bhakṣate priyayā saha

Kunjala said: "Having heard this, the king, together with his wife once again, began to eat the flesh of his own body, together with his beloved,"

Verse 97 (padma.2.97.97)

नित्यमेव महाप्राज्ञ तद्वत्पूर्णं भवेद्वपुः । नित्यं प्रभक्षते राजा राज्ञी तस्य च पुत्रक

nityameva mahāprājña tadvatpūrṇaṁ bhavedvapuḥ nityaṁ prabhakṣate rājā rājñī tasya ca putraka

"- constantly, O greatly wise one, and just so his body would become whole again. The king constantly ate, and so did his queen, my child."

Verse 98 (padma.2.97.98)

यथायथा च राजा च भक्षते च कलेवरम् । हसेते वै सदा नार्यौ तयोर्भावं वदाम्यहम्

yathāyathā ca rājā ca bhakṣate ca kalevaram hasete vai sadā nāryau tayorbhāvaṁ vadāmyaham

"As the king ate his own body, again and again, those two women would always laugh; I shall tell you the inner meaning of that."

Verse 99 (padma.2.97.99)

प्रज्ञा सार्द्धं महासाध्वी चरित्रं तस्य भूपतेः । हास्यं हि कुरुते नित्यं तस्य श्रद्धानपायिनी

prajñā sārddhaṁ mahāsādhvī caritraṁ tasya bhūpateḥ hāsyaṁ hi kurute nityaṁ tasya śraddhānapāyinī

"Pragya (Intellect), together with that most virtuous one (Faith), seeing that king's conduct, always laughs at his very want of faith."

Verse 100 (padma.2.97.100)

प्रज्ञया प्रेर्यमाणेन न दत्तं श्रद्धयान्वितम् । ब्राह्मणेभ्यः सुसंकल्प्य अन्नमुद्दिश्य वैष्णवे

prajñayā preryamāṇena na dattaṁ śraddhayānvitam brāhmaṇebhyaḥ susaṁkalpya annamuddiśya vaiṣṇave

"Impelled by mere intellect alone, nothing endowed with true faith was ever given - having merely resolved, 'I shall give food to brahmins in the name of Vishnu,'"

Verse 101 (padma.2.97.101)

एवं स भक्षते मांसं स्वस्य कायस्य नित्यदा । योषिदप्यात्मकायं च रसैश्चामृतसन्निभैः

evaṁ sa bhakṣate māṁsaṁ svasya kāyasya nityadā yoṣidapyātmakāyaṁ ca rasaiścāmṛtasannibhaiḥ

"- thus he constantly eats the flesh of his own body; and that woman too eats her own body, with essences like ambrosia."

Verse 102 (padma.2.97.102)

ततो वर्षशतांते तु वामदेवं महामुनिम् । स्मृत्वा स गर्हयामास आत्मानं प्रति सुव्रत

tato varṣaśatāṁte tu vāmadevaṁ mahāmunim smṛtvā sa garhayāmāsa ātmānaṁ prati suvrata

"Then, at the end of a hundred years, remembering the great sage Vamadeva, he, O one of good vows, began to reproach himself -"

Verse 103 (padma.2.97.103)

न दत्तं पितृदेवेभ्यो ब्राह्मणेभ्यः कदा मया । न दत्तमतिथिभ्यो हि वृद्धेभ्यश्च विशेषतः

na dattaṁ pitṛdevebhyo brāhmaṇebhyaḥ kadā mayā na dattamatithibhyo hi vṛddhebhyaśca viśeṣataḥ

"'I never gave anything, at any time, to the ancestors, the gods, or brahmins; I never gave to guests, and especially not to the aged;'"

Verse 104 (padma.2.97.104)

दीनेभ्यो हि न दत्तं च कृपया चातुराय च । एवं स भुंक्ते स्वं मांसं गर्हयन्स्वीय कर्म च

dīnebhyo hi na dattaṁ ca kṛpayā cāturāya ca evaṁ sa bhuṁkte svaṁ māṁsaṁ garhayansvīya karma ca

"'I never gave, out of compassion, to the wretched or to the afflicted.'" Thus he ate his own flesh, reproaching his own deeds.

Verse 105 (padma.2.97.105)

एवं स्वमांसं भुंजानं सुबाहुं प्रियया सह । हसेते च तदा दृष्ट्वा प्रज्ञा श्रद्धा च द्वे स्त्रियौ

evaṁ svamāṁsaṁ bhuṁjānaṁ subāhuṁ priyayā saha hasete ca tadā dṛṣṭvā prajñā śraddhā ca dve striyau

As Subahu, together with his beloved, thus ate his own flesh, seeing this, those two women, Pragya and Shraddha, laughed then.

Verse 106 (padma.2.97.106)

तस्य कर्मविपाकस्य शुभात्मा हसते नृप । मम संगप्रसंगेन न दत्तं पापचेतन

tasya karmavipākasya śubhātmā hasate nṛpa mama saṁgaprasaṁgena na dattaṁ pāpacetana

"At the ripening of his karma, O king, that pure-souled one laughs: 'Through my very presence and company, you gave nothing at all, O evil-minded one!'"

Verse 107 (padma.2.97.107)

प्रज्ञा च वचनैस्तैस्तु राजानं हसते पुनः । क्वगतोसौ महामोहो येन त्वं मोहितो नृप

prajñā ca vacanaistaistu rājānaṁ hasate punaḥ kvagatosau mahāmoho yena tvaṁ mohito nṛpa

And Pragya too, with these very words, laughed again at the king: "Where has that great delusion gone, O king, by which you were deluded?"

Verse 108 (padma.2.97.108)

लोभेन मोहयुक्तेन तमोगर्ते निपात्यते । तत्रापतित्वा मामैव पतितं दुःखसंकटे

lobhena mohayuktena tamogarte nipātyate tatrāpatitvā māmaiva patitaṁ duḥkhasaṁkaṭe

"'Cast down into a pit of darkness by delusion joined with greed - having fallen there, you have fallen into this dire distress along with me -'"

Verse 109 (padma.2.97.109)

दानमार्गं परित्यज्य लोभमार्गं गतो नृप । भार्यया सह भुंक्ष्व त्वं व्यापितः क्षुधया भृशम्

dānamārgaṁ parityajya lobhamārgaṁ gato nṛpa bhāryayā saha bhuṁkṣva tvaṁ vyāpitaḥ kṣudhayā bhṛśam

"'- having abandoned the path of giving, O king, you took the path of greed; now, together with your wife, greatly afflicted by hunger, enjoy this.'"

Verse 110 (padma.2.97.110)

एवं तं हसते प्रज्ञा सुबाहुं प्रिययान्वितम् । एतद्धि कारणं सर्वं तयोर्हासस्य पुत्रक

evaṁ taṁ hasate prajñā subāhuṁ priyayānvitam etaddhi kāraṇaṁ sarvaṁ tayorhāsasya putraka

Thus Pragya laughs at Subahu, together with his beloved; this, my child, is the whole reason for their laughter.

Verse 111 (padma.2.97.111)

भक्ष्यमाणस्य भूपस्य देहं स्वं दुःखिते तदा । ऊचतुर्देहिदेहीति याच्यमानः सदैव हि

bhakṣyamāṇasya bhūpasya dehaṁ svaṁ duḥkhite tadā ūcaturdehidehīti yācyamānaḥ sadaiva hi

While the king's body was being eaten, those two, sorrowful then, kept saying, "Give, give!" again and again, ever asking -

Verse 112 (padma.2.97.112)

क्षुधातृष्णामहाप्राज्ञ भीमरूपे भयानके । पयसा मिश्रितं भक्षं याचेते नृपतीश्वरम्

kṣudhātṛṣṇāmahāprājña bhīmarūpe bhayānake payasā miśritaṁ bhakṣaṁ yācete nṛpatīśvaram

- O greatly wise one, in that fearsome, dreadful form of hunger and thirst, they beg the king for food mixed with milk.

Verse 113 (padma.2.97.113)

एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यत्त्वया परिपृच्छितम् । अन्यत्किं ते प्रवक्ष्यामि तद्वदस्व महामते

etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ yattvayā paripṛcchitam anyatkiṁ te pravakṣyāmi tadvadasva mahāmate

All this I have declared to you, that which you asked me. What else shall I tell you? Tell me that, O wise one.

Verse 114 (padma.2.97.114)

विज्वल उवाच- वासुदेवाभिधानं तत्स्तोत्रं कथय मे पितः । येन मोक्षं व्रजेद्राजा तद्विष्णोः परमं पदम्

vijvala uvāca- vāsudevābhidhānaṁ tatstotraṁ kathaya me pitaḥ yena mokṣaṁ vrajedrājā tadviṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padam

Vijvala said: "Tell me, father, that hymn named after Vasudeva, by which the king may attain liberation, that supreme abode of Vishnu."
