The Vasudeva Stotra and Subahu's Liberation
Verse 1 (padma.2.98.1)
सूत उवाच- एवमुक्ते शुभे वाक्ये विज्वलेन महात्मना ।। कुंजलो वदतां श्रेष्ठः स्तोत्रं पुण्यमुदैरयत्
sūta uvāca- evamukte śubhe vākye vijvalena mahātmanā kuṁjalo vadatāṁ śreṣṭhaḥ stotraṁ puṇyamudairayat
Suta said: "When this auspicious word had been spoken by the great-souled Vijvala, Kunjala, foremost among speakers, then uttered that meritorious hymn."
Verse 2 (padma.2.98.2)
ध्यात्वा नत्वा हृषीकेशं सर्वक्लेशविनाशनम् ।। सर्वश्रेयः प्रदातारं हरेः स्तोत्रमुदीरितम्
dhyātvā natvā hṛṣīkeśaṁ sarvakleśavināśanam sarvaśreyaḥ pradātāraṁ hareḥ stotramudīritam
Having meditated on and bowed to Hrishikesha, the destroyer of every affliction, the all-beneficent hymn to Hari was recited.
Verse 3 (padma.2.98.3)
वासुदेवाभिधानं तत्सर्वश्रेयः प्रदायकम् ।। मोक्षद्वारं सुखोपेतं शांतिदं पुष्टिवर्द्धनम्
vāsudevābhidhānaṁ tatsarvaśreyaḥ pradāyakam mokṣadvāraṁ sukhopetaṁ śāṁtidaṁ puṣṭivarddhanam
That named Vasudeva, bestowing all good, the door to liberation, filled with happiness, giver of peace, increaser of nourishment,
Verse 4 (padma.2.98.4)
सर्वकामप्रदातारं ज्ञानदं ज्ञानवर्द्धनम् ।। वासुदेवस्य यत्स्तोत्रं विज्वलाय प्रकाशितम्
sarvakāmapradātāraṁ jñānadaṁ jñānavarddhanam vāsudevasya yatstotraṁ vijvalāya prakāśitam
granter of every desire, giver of knowledge, increaser of knowledge - that hymn of Vasudeva was revealed to Vijvala.
Verse 5 (padma.2.98.5)
वासुदेवाभिधानं चाप्रमेयं पुण्यवर्द्धनम् ।। सोऽवगम्य पितुः सर्वं विज्वलः पक्षिणांवरः
vāsudevābhidhānaṁ cāprameyaṁ puṇyavarddhanam so'vagamya pituḥ sarvaṁ vijvalaḥ pakṣiṇāṁvaraḥ
That named Vasudeva, immeasurable, increaser of merit - having understood all of it from his father, Vijvala, best of birds,
Verse 6 (padma.2.98.6)
तत्र गंतुं प्रचक्राम पितुः पृष्टं तदा नृप ।। एवं गंतुं कृतमतिं विज्वलं ज्ञानपारगम्
tatra gaṁtuṁ pracakrāma pituḥ pṛṣṭaṁ tadā nṛpa evaṁ gaṁtuṁ kṛtamatiṁ vijvalaṁ jñānapāragam
resolved to go there, having asked his father then, O king. Thus, to Vijvala, resolved to go, versed in knowledge,
Verse 7 (padma.2.98.7)
उवाच पुत्रं धर्मात्मा उपकारसमुद्यतम्
uvāca putraṁ dharmātmā upakārasamudyatam
- the righteous father spoke, to that son eager to help.
Verse 8 (padma.2.98.8)
कुंजल उवाच- पुत्र तस्य महज्जाने पातकं भूपतेः शृणु ।। यतो गत्वा पठ स्वत्वं सुबाहोश्चोपशृण्वतः
kuṁjala uvāca- putra tasya mahajjāne pātakaṁ bhūpateḥ śṛṇu yato gatvā paṭha svatvaṁ subāhoścopaśṛṇvataḥ
Kunjala said: "My son, know the great sin of that king; hear it, that having gone there you may recite it yourself, for Subahu to hear."
Verse 9 (padma.2.98.9)
यथायथा श्रोष्यति स्तोत्रमुत्तमं तथा तथा ज्ञानमयो भविष्यति ।। श्रीवासुदेवस्य न संशयो वै तस्य प्रसादात्सुशिवं मयोक्तम्
yathāyathā śroṣyati stotramuttamaṁ tathā tathā jñānamayo bhaviṣyati śrīvāsudevasya na saṁśayo vai tasya prasādātsuśivaṁ mayoktam
"The more he hears this excellent hymn, the more he shall become full of knowledge; through the grace of Shri Vasudeva there is no doubt of this - this most auspicious thing I have told you."
Verse 10 (padma.2.98.10)
आमंत्र्य स गुरुं पश्चादुड्डीय लघुविक्रमः ।। आनंदकाननं पुण्यं संप्राप्तो विज्वलस्तदा
āmaṁtrya sa guruṁ paścāduḍḍīya laghuvikramaḥ ānaṁdakānanaṁ puṇyaṁ saṁprāpto vijvalastadā
Having taken leave of his guru, that swift one, flying up, then reached the holy Ananda forest.
Verse 11 (padma.2.98.11)
वृक्षच्छायां समाश्रित्य उपविष्टो मुदान्वितः । समालोक्य स राजानं विमानेनागतं पुनः
vṛkṣacchāyāṁ samāśritya upaviṣṭo mudānvitaḥ samālokya sa rājānaṁ vimānenāgataṁ punaḥ
Taking shelter in the shade of a tree, he sat down joyfully, watching for the king to come again by celestial vehicle.
Verse 12 (padma.2.98.12)
एष्यत्यसौ कदा राजा सुबाहुः प्रियया सह ।। पातकान्मोचयिष्यामि स्तोत्रेणानेन वै कदा
eṣyatyasau kadā rājā subāhuḥ priyayā saha pātakānmocayiṣyāmi stotreṇānena vai kadā
"When will that King Subahu come, together with his beloved? When shall I release him from his sin, through this hymn?"
Verse 13 (padma.2.98.13)
तावद्विमानः संप्राप्तः किंकिणीजालमंडितः ।। घंटारवसमाकीर्णो वीणावेणुसमन्वितः
tāvadvimānaḥ saṁprāptaḥ kiṁkiṇījālamaṁḍitaḥ ghaṁṭāravasamākīrṇo vīṇāveṇusamanvitaḥ
Just then the celestial vehicle arrived, adorned with a network of little bells, filled with the sound of gongs, accompanied by veena and flute,
Verse 14 (padma.2.98.14)
गंधर्वस्वरसंघुष्टश्चाप्सरोभिः समन्वितः ।। सर्वकामसमृद्धस्तु अन्नोदकविवर्जितः
gaṁdharvasvarasaṁghuṣṭaścāpsarobhiḥ samanvitaḥ sarvakāmasamṛddhastu annodakavivarjitaḥ
resounding with gandharva melodies, accompanied by apsaras, rich with every desire, yet devoid of food and water.
Verse 15 (padma.2.98.15)
तस्मिन्याने स्थितो राजा सुबाहुः प्रियया सह ।। समुत्तीर्णो विमानात्स सुतार्क्ष्य प्रियया सह
tasminyāne sthito rājā subāhuḥ priyayā saha samuttīrṇo vimānātsa sutārkṣya priyayā saha
Seated in that vehicle was King Subahu, together with his beloved; he and his lovely-eyed beloved descended from the vehicle.
Verse 16 (padma.2.98.16)
शस्त्रमादाय तीक्ष्णं तु यावत्कृंतति तच्छवम् ।। तावद्धि विज्वलेनापि समाह्वानं कृतं तदा
śastramādāya tīkṣṇaṁ tu yāvatkṛṁtati tacchavam tāvaddhi vijvalenāpi samāhvānaṁ kṛtaṁ tadā
Taking up a sharp weapon, just as he was about to cut that corpse, at that very moment Vijvala called out to him -
Verse 17 (padma.2.98.17)
भो भोः पुरुषशार्दूल देवोपम भवानिदम् ।। करोति निर्घृणं कर्म नृशंसैर्न च शक्यते
bho bhoḥ puruṣaśārdūla devopama bhavānidam karoti nirghṛṇaṁ karma nṛśaṁsairna ca śakyate
"'Ho, ho, tiger among men! Though you are like a god, you perform this merciless deed - a thing not possible even for cruel men!'"
Verse 18 (padma.2.98.18)
कर्तुं पुरुषशार्दूल कोऽयं विधिविपर्ययः ।। दुष्कृतं साहसं कर्म निंद्यं लोकेषु सर्वदा
kartuṁ puruṣaśārdūla ko'yaṁ vidhiviparyayaḥ duṣkṛtaṁ sāhasaṁ karma niṁdyaṁ lokeṣu sarvadā
"'How can you do this, tiger among men? What perversion of fate is this? An evil, reckless deed, ever censured among people -'"
Verse 19 (padma.2.98.19)
वेदाचारविहीनं तु कस्मात्प्रारब्धवानि ह ।। तन्मे त्वं कारणं सर्वं कथयस्व यथा तथा
vedācāravihīnaṁ tu kasmātprārabdhavāni ha tanme tvaṁ kāraṇaṁ sarvaṁ kathayasva yathā tathā
"'- devoid of Vedic conduct - why have you undertaken it? Tell me the whole reason for this, just as it is.'"
Verse 20 (padma.2.98.20)
इत्येवं भाषितं तस्य विज्वलस्य महात्मनः ।। समाकर्ण्य महाराजः स्वप्रियां वाक्यमब्रवीत्
ityevaṁ bhāṣitaṁ tasya vijvalasya mahātmanaḥ samākarṇya mahārājaḥ svapriyāṁ vākyamabravīt
Having heard these words of the great-souled Vijvala, the great king spoke this word to his beloved -
Verse 21 (padma.2.98.21)
प्रिये वर्षशतं भुक्तं मयेदं पापकर्मणा ।। कदा न भाषितं केन यथायं परिभाषते
priye varṣaśataṁ bhuktaṁ mayedaṁ pāpakarmaṇā kadā na bhāṣitaṁ kena yathāyaṁ paribhāṣate
"'My dear, for a hundred years I have endured this because of my sinful deed. Never has anyone spoken as this one now speaks.'"
Verse 22 (padma.2.98.22)
ममैवं पीड्यमानस्य क्षुधया हृदयं प्रिये ।। निर्गतं चोत्सुकं कांते शांतिश्चित्ते प्रवर्तते
mamaivaṁ pīḍyamānasya kṣudhayā hṛdayaṁ priye nirgataṁ cotsukaṁ kāṁte śāṁtiścitte pravartate
"'As my heart, so afflicted by hunger, dear one, has stirred with eagerness, peace now arises in my mind.'"
Verse 23 (padma.2.98.23)
यावदस्य श्रुतं वाक्यं सर्वदुःखस्य शांतिदम् ।। तावच्चित्ते समाह्लादो वर्तते चारुहासिनि
yāvadasya śrutaṁ vākyaṁ sarvaduḥkhasya śāṁtidam tāvaccitte samāhlādo vartate cāruhāsini
"'As soon as his words were heard, which bring peace to every sorrow, joy has arisen in my heart, O lovely-smiling one.'"
Verse 24 (padma.2.98.24)
कोयं देवो नु गंधर्वः सहस्राक्षो भविष्यति ।। मुनीनां स्याद्वचः सत्यं यदुक्तं मुनिना पुरा
koyaṁ devo nu gaṁdharvaḥ sahasrākṣo bhaviṣyati munīnāṁ syādvacaḥ satyaṁ yaduktaṁ muninā purā
"'Who is this - a god, or perhaps a gandharva, or will he become the thousand-eyed one? What the sage once said regarding sages must be true.'"
Verse 25 (padma.2.98.25)
एवमाभाषितं श्रुत्वा प्रियस्यानंतरं प्रिया ।। राजानं प्रत्युवाचाथ भार्या पतिपरायणा
evamābhāṣitaṁ śrutvā priyasyānaṁtaraṁ priyā rājānaṁ pratyuvācātha bhāryā patiparāyaṇā
Having heard these words, the beloved, devoted to her husband, then replied to the king, right after her beloved had spoken -
Verse 26 (padma.2.98.26)
सत्यमुक्तं त्वया नाथ इदमाश्चर्यमुत्तमम् ।। यथा ते वर्तते कांत मम चित्ते तथा पुनः
satyamuktaṁ tvayā nātha idamāścaryamuttamam yathā te vartate kāṁta mama citte tathā punaḥ
"'You have spoken truly, my lord; this is indeed a supreme wonder. As it is with you, beloved, so it is again with my own heart.'"
Verse 27 (padma.2.98.27)
पक्षिरूपधरः कोऽयं पृच्छते हितकारिवत् ।। एवमाभाषितं श्रुत्वा प्रियायाः पृथिवीपतिः
pakṣirūpadharaḥ ko'yaṁ pṛcchate hitakārivat evamābhāṣitaṁ śrutvā priyāyāḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ
"'Who is this one, bearing the form of a bird, who asks as if wishing us well?'" Having heard these words of his beloved, the lord of the earth -
Verse 28 (padma.2.98.28)
बद्धांजलिपुटोभूत्वा पक्षिणं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।। सुबाहुरुवाच- स्वागतं ते महाप्राज्ञ पक्षिरूपधरः प्रभो
baddhāṁjalipuṭobhūtvā pakṣiṇaṁ vākyamabravīt subāhuruvāca- svāgataṁ te mahāprājña pakṣirūpadharaḥ prabho
- with joined palms, spoke this word to the bird. Subahu said: "Welcome to you, O greatly wise one, bearer of a bird's form, O lord!"
Verse 29 (padma.2.98.29)
शिरसा भार्यया सार्द्धं तव पादांबुजद्वयम् ।। नमस्करोम्यहं पुण्यमस्तु नस्त्वत्प्रसादतः
śirasā bhāryayā sārddhaṁ tava pādāṁbujadvayam namaskaromyahaṁ puṇyamastu nastvatprasādataḥ
"With my head, together with my wife, I bow to your two lotus feet; may there be merit for us, by your grace."
Verse 30 (padma.2.98.30)
भवान्कः पक्षिरूपेण पुण्यमेवं प्रभाषते ।। यादृशं क्रियतेकर्म पूर्वदेहेन सत्तम
bhavānkaḥ pakṣirūpeṇa puṇyamevaṁ prabhāṣate yādṛśaṁ kriyatekarma pūrvadehena sattama
"Who are you, that in the form of a bird you speak such merit? Whatever deed, O worthy one, is done in a former body -"
Verse 31 (padma.2.98.31)
सुकृतं दुष्कृतं वापि तदिहैव प्रभुज्यते ।। अथ तेनात्मकं वृत्तं तस्याग्रे च निवेदितम्
sukṛtaṁ duṣkṛtaṁ vāpi tadihaiva prabhujyate atha tenātmakaṁ vṛttaṁ tasyāgre ca niveditam
"- whether good or evil, that same is experienced right here." Then he related his own whole story before him,
Verse 32 (padma.2.98.32)
यथोक्तं कुंजलेनापि पित्रा पूर्वं श्रुतं तथा ।। कथयस्वात्मवृत्तांतं भवान्को मां प्रभाषते
yathoktaṁ kuṁjalenāpi pitrā pūrvaṁ śrutaṁ tathā kathayasvātmavṛttāṁtaṁ bhavānko māṁ prabhāṣate
just as it had been told by Kunjala, and as he had heard it from his father before. "Tell me your own story - who are you, that you speak to me?"
Verse 33 (padma.2.98.33)
सुबाहुं प्रत्युवाचेदं वाक्यं पक्षिवरस्तदा ।। विज्वल उवाच- शुकजात्यां समुत्पन्नः कुंजलोनाम मे पिता
subāhuṁ pratyuvācedaṁ vākyaṁ pakṣivarastadā vijvala uvāca- śukajātyāṁ samutpannaḥ kuṁjalonāma me pitā
The best of birds then spoke this word in reply to Subahu. Vijvala said: "Born in the parrot race, my father is named Kunjala;"
Verse 34 (padma.2.98.34)
तस्याहं विज्वलो नाम तृतीयस्तु सुतेष्वहम् ।। नाहं देवो न गंधर्वो न च सिद्धो महाभुज
tasyāhaṁ vijvalo nāma tṛtīyastu suteṣvaham nāhaṁ devo na gaṁdharvo na ca siddho mahābhuja
"his son, I am named Vijvala, the third among his sons. I am no god, no gandharva, nor even a siddha, O mighty-armed one."
Verse 35 (padma.2.98.35)
नित्यमेव प्रपश्यामि कर्म चैवं सुदारुणम् ।। कियत्कालं महत्कर्म साहसाकारसंयुतम्
nityameva prapaśyāmi karma caivaṁ sudāruṇam kiyatkālaṁ mahatkarma sāhasākārasaṁyutam
"I constantly witness this most terrible deed of yours. For how long, great king, will you perform this great, reckless deed -"
Verse 36 (padma.2.98.36)
करिष्यसि महाराज तन्मे कथय सांप्रतम् ।। सुबाहुरुवाच- वासुदेवाभिधानं यत्पूर्वमुक्तं हि ब्राह्मणैः
kariṣyasi mahārāja tanme kathaya sāṁpratam subāhuruvāca- vāsudevābhidhānaṁ yatpūrvamuktaṁ hi brāhmaṇaiḥ
"- tell me that now." Subahu said: "That hymn named Vasudeva, formerly declared by brahmins -"
Verse 37 (padma.2.98.37)
श्रोष्याम्यहं यदा भद्र गतिं स्वां प्राप्नुयां तदा ।। पुण्यात्मना भाषितं वै मुनिना संयतात्मना
śroṣyāmyahaṁ yadā bhadra gatiṁ svāṁ prāpnuyāṁ tadā puṇyātmanā bhāṣitaṁ vai muninā saṁyatātmanā
"- when I hear it, gracious one, then I shall attain my own true destiny. It was spoken by a meritorious, self-controlled sage -"
Verse 38 (padma.2.98.38)
तदाहं पातकान्मुक्तो भविष्यामि न संशयः ।। विज्वल उवाच- तवार्थे पृच्छितस्तातस्तेन मे कथितं च यत्
tadāhaṁ pātakānmukto bhaviṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ vijvala uvāca- tavārthe pṛcchitastātastena me kathitaṁ ca yat
"- that then I shall be freed from my sin, without doubt." Vijvala said: "Father was asked, for your sake, and what he told me -"
Verse 39 (padma.2.98.39)
तत्तेद्याहं प्रवक्ष्यामि शाश्वतं शृणु सत्तम
tattedyāhaṁ pravakṣyāmi śāśvataṁ śṛṇu sattama
"- that I shall now declare to you; hear it, O worthy one, that eternal hymn."
Verse 40 (padma.2.98.40)
ॐअस्य श्रीवासुदेवाभिधानस्य स्तोत्रस्य नारदऋषिरनुष्टुप्छंदः । ॐकारोदेवता सर्वपातकनाशनार्थे चतुर्वर्गसाधनार्थे च जपे विनियोगः । ॐनमो भगवते वासुदेवाय इति मंत्रः । पावनं परमं पुण्यं वेदज्ञं वेदमंदिरम् ।। विद्याधारं भवाधारं प्रणवं वै नमाम्यहम्
oṁasya śrīvāsudevābhidhānasya stotrasya nāradaṛṣiranuṣṭupchaṁdaḥ oṁkārodevatā sarvapātakanāśanārthe caturvargasādhanārthe ca jape viniyogaḥ oṁnamo bhagavate vāsudevāya iti maṁtraḥ pāvanaṁ paramaṁ puṇyaṁ vedajñaṁ vedamaṁdiram vidyādhāraṁ bhavādhāraṁ praṇavaṁ vai namāmyaham
[Ritual formula:] "Om. Of this hymn named after Shri Vasudeva, the sage is Narada, the meter is Anushtubh, the deity is Omkara; its application is in recitation for the destruction of all sin and the accomplishment of the four aims of life. The mantra is: 'Om, salutation to the Blessed Vasudeva.'" "Purifying, supremely meritorious, knower of the Veda, the very temple of the Veda, the support of knowledge, the support of existence - I bow to that syllable Om."
Verse 41 (padma.2.98.41)
निरावासं निराकारं सुप्रकाशं महोदयम् ।। निर्गुणं गुणसंबद्धं नमामि प्रणवं परम्
nirāvāsaṁ nirākāraṁ suprakāśaṁ mahodayam nirguṇaṁ guṇasaṁbaddhaṁ namāmi praṇavaṁ param
"Without dwelling, without form, of fine radiance, of great glory, without qualities yet joined to qualities - I bow to that supreme syllable Om."
Verse 42 (padma.2.98.42)
महाकांतं महोत्साहं महामोहविनाशनम् ।। आचिन्वंतं जगत्सर्वं गुणातीतं नमाम्यहम्
mahākāṁtaṁ mahotsāhaṁ mahāmohavināśanam ācinvaṁtaṁ jagatsarvaṁ guṇātītaṁ namāmyaham
"Of great splendor, of great vigor, destroyer of great delusion, gathering up the whole universe, beyond the qualities - I bow to him."
Verse 43 (padma.2.98.43)
भाति सर्वत्र यो भूत्वा भूतानां भूतिवर्द्धनः। । अभयं भिक्षुसंबद्धं नमामि प्रणवं शिवम्
bhāti sarvatra yo bhūtvā bhūtānāṁ bhūtivarddhanaḥ abhayaṁ bhikṣusaṁbaddhaṁ namāmi praṇavaṁ śivam
"He who shines everywhere, having become the increaser of the welfare of beings; fearless, joined with the mendicant - I bow to that auspicious syllable Om."
Verse 44 (padma.2.98.44)
गायत्रीसाम गायंतं गीतं गीतप्रियं शुभम् ।। गंधर्वगीतभोक्तारं प्रणवं प्रणमाम्यहम्
gāyatrīsāma gāyaṁtaṁ gītaṁ gītapriyaṁ śubham gaṁdharvagītabhoktāraṁ praṇavaṁ praṇamāmyaham
"Singing the Gayatri and the Sama chant, sung of, a lover of song, auspicious, the very enjoyer of the songs of the gandharvas - I bow to that syllable Om."
Verse 45 (padma.2.98.45)
विचारं वेदरूपं तं यज्ञस्थं भक्तवत्सलम् ।। योनिं सर्वस्य लोकस्य ॐकारं प्रणमाम्यहम्
vicāraṁ vedarūpaṁ taṁ yajñasthaṁ bhaktavatsalam yoniṁ sarvasya lokasya oṁkāraṁ praṇamāmyaham
"Thought itself, of the very form of the Veda, established in sacrifice, tender toward devotees, the very womb of every world - I bow to that syllable Om."
Verse 46 (padma.2.98.46)
तारकं सर्वभूतानां नौरूपेण विराजितम् ।। संसारार्णवमग्नानां नमामि प्रणवं हरिम्
tārakaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ naurūpeṇa virājitam saṁsārārṇavamagnānāṁ namāmi praṇavaṁ harim
"The deliverer of all beings, resplendent in the form of a boat, for those sunk in the ocean of samsara - I bow to that syllable, to Hari."
Verse 47 (padma.2.98.47)
सर्वलोकेषु वसते एकरूपेण नैकधा ।। धामकैवल्यरूपेण नमामि प्रणवं शिवम्
sarvalokeṣu vasate ekarūpeṇa naikadhā dhāmakaivalyarūpeṇa namāmi praṇavaṁ śivam
"He who dwells in all worlds in one form, though manifold, in the form of the abode of absolute oneness - I bow to that auspicious syllable Om."
Verse 48 (padma.2.98.48)
सूक्ष्मं सूक्ष्मतरं शुद्धं निर्गुणं गुणनायकम् ।। वर्जितं प्राकृतैर्भावैर्वेदस्थानं नमाम्यहम्
sūkṣmaṁ sūkṣmataraṁ śuddhaṁ nirguṇaṁ guṇanāyakam varjitaṁ prākṛtairbhāvairvedasthānaṁ namāmyaham
"Subtle, subtler still, pure, without qualities yet the very lord of qualities, free from all worldly conditions, the very abode of the Vedas - I bow to him."
Verse 49 (padma.2.98.49)
देवदैत्यवियोगैश्च वर्जितं तुष्टिभिः सदा ।। दैवैश्च योगिभिर्ध्येयं तमोंकारं नमाम्यहम्
devadaityaviyogaiśca varjitaṁ tuṣṭibhiḥ sadā daivaiśca yogibhirdhyeyaṁ tamoṁkāraṁ namāmyaham
"Ever free from separation between gods and demons, from all satisfactions, meditated upon by gods and yogis - I bow to that transcendent syllable Om."
Verse 50 (padma.2.98.50)
व्यापकं विश्ववेत्तारं विज्ञानं परमं शुभम् ।। शिवं शिवगुणं शांतं वंदे प्रणवमीश्वरम्
vyāpakaṁ viśvavettāraṁ vijñānaṁ paramaṁ śubham śivaṁ śivaguṇaṁ śāṁtaṁ vaṁde praṇavamīśvaram
"All-pervading, the knower of the universe, supreme and auspicious knowledge itself, the auspicious one, of auspicious qualities, peaceful - I salute that syllable Om, the Lord."
Verse 51 (padma.2.98.51)
यस्य मायां प्रविष्टास्तु ब्रह्माद्याश्च सुरासुराः। । न विंदंति परं शुद्धं मोक्षद्वारं नमाम्यहम्
yasya māyāṁ praviṣṭāstu brahmādyāśca surāsurāḥ na viṁdaṁti paraṁ śuddhaṁ mokṣadvāraṁ namāmyaham
"Into whose maya even Brahma and the other gods and demons enter, yet do not find that supreme, pure one - I bow to that door of liberation."
Verse 52 (padma.2.98.52)
आनंदकंदाय विशुद्धबुद्धये शुद्धाय हंसाय परावराय। । नमोऽस्तु तस्मै गणनायकाय श्रीवासुदेवाय महाप्रभाय
ānaṁdakaṁdāya viśuddhabuddhaye śuddhāya haṁsāya parāvarāya namo'stu tasmai gaṇanāyakāya śrīvāsudevāya mahāprabhāya
"Salutation to him, the root of bliss, of purified understanding, the pure one, the swan, higher than the highest and lower than the lowest, the lord of hosts, the glorious Vasudeva, the great lord."
Verse 53 (padma.2.98.53)
श्रीपांचजन्येन विराजमानं रविप्रभेणापि सुदर्शनेन ।। गदाब्जकेनापि विराजमानं प्रभुं सदैनं शरणं प्रपद्ये
śrīpāṁcajanyena virājamānaṁ raviprabheṇāpi sudarśanena gadābjakenāpi virājamānaṁ prabhuṁ sadainaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye
"Resplendent with the glorious Panchajanya conch, and with the sun-radiant Sudarshana discus too, resplendent too with the mace and the lotus - I take refuge always in that lord."
Verse 54 (padma.2.98.54)
यं वेदगुह्यं सगुणं गुणानामाधारभूतं सचराचरस्य ।। यं सूर्यवैश्वानरतुल्यतेजसं तं वासुदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये
yaṁ vedaguhyaṁ saguṇaṁ guṇānāmādhārabhūtaṁ sacarācarasya yaṁ sūryavaiśvānaratulyatejasaṁ taṁ vāsudevaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye
"He who is the secret of the Vedas, possessed of qualities, the very foundation of the qualities of the moving and unmoving, whose splendor is equal to the sun and to fire - I take refuge in that Vasudeva."
Verse 55 (padma.2.98.55)
क्षुधानिधानं विमलं सुरूपमानंदमानेन विराजमानम् । यं प्राप्य जीवंति सुरादिलोकास्तं वासुदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये
kṣudhānidhānaṁ vimalaṁ surūpamānaṁdamānena virājamānam yaṁ prāpya jīvaṁti surādilokāstaṁ vāsudevaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye
"The treasury free of hunger, the stainless, the beautiful, resplendent with the very measure of bliss, by attaining whom the gods and other worlds live - I take refuge in that Vasudeva."
Verse 56 (padma.2.98.56)
तमोघनानां स्वकरैर्विनाशं करोति नित्यं परिकर्महेतुः ।। उद्द्योतमानं रविदीप्ततेजसं तं वासुदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये
tamoghanānāṁ svakarairvināśaṁ karoti nityaṁ parikarmahetuḥ uddyotamānaṁ ravidīptatejasaṁ taṁ vāsudevaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye
"He who, by his own rays, ever destroys the dense masses of darkness, the very cause of all works, blazing with the radiance of the sun - I take refuge in that Vasudeva."
Verse 57 (padma.2.98.57)
यो भाति सर्वत्र रविप्रभावैः करोति शोषं च रसं ददाति ।। यः प्राणिनामंतरगः स वायुस्तं वासुदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये
yo bhāti sarvatra raviprabhāvaiḥ karoti śoṣaṁ ca rasaṁ dadāti yaḥ prāṇināmaṁtaragaḥ sa vāyustaṁ vāsudevaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye
"He who shines everywhere with the power of the sun, who causes drying, and who gives essence too, who is that wind moving within all beings - I take refuge in that Vasudeva."
Verse 58 (padma.2.98.58)
स्वेच्छानुरूपेण स देवदेवो बिभर्ति लोकान्सकलान्महीपान् ।। संतारणे नौरिव वर्तते यस्तं वासुदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये
svecchānurūpeṇa sa devadevo bibharti lokānsakalānmahīpān saṁtāraṇe nauriva vartate yastaṁ vāsudevaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye
"According to his own will, that god of gods sustains all worlds and their rulers; who acts like a boat in ferrying across - I take refuge in that Vasudeva."
Verse 59 (padma.2.98.59)
अंतर्गतो लोकमयः सदैव पचत्यसौ स्थावरजंगमानाम् ।। स्वाहामुखो देवगणस्य हेतुस्तं वासुदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये
aṁtargato lokamayaḥ sadaiva pacatyasau sthāvarajaṁgamānām svāhāmukho devagaṇasya hetustaṁ vāsudevaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye
"Ever present within, the very form of the worlds, who cooks the unmoving and moving alike; the very source of the host of gods, whose face is Svaha - I take refuge in that Vasudeva."
Verse 60 (padma.2.98.60)
रसैः सुपुण्यैः सकलैः सहैव पुष्णाति सौम्यो गुणदश्च लोके ।। अन्नानि योनिर्मल तेजसैव तं वासुदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये
rasaiḥ supuṇyaiḥ sakalaiḥ sahaiva puṣṇāti saumyo guṇadaśca loke annāni yonirmala tejasaiva taṁ vāsudevaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye
"With all his most holy essences he nourishes; gentle, the giver of virtue in the world; the very source and radiance of food itself - I take refuge in that Vasudeva."

अस्त्येव सर्वत्र विनाशहेतुः सर्वाश्रयः सर्वमयः स सर्वः ।। विना हृषीकैर्विषयान्प्रभुंक्ते तं वासुदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये
astyeva sarvatra vināśahetuḥ sarvāśrayaḥ sarvamayaḥ sa sarvaḥ vinā hṛṣīkairviṣayānprabhuṁkte taṁ vāsudevaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye
"Present everywhere, the very cause of destruction, the refuge of all, the substance of all, the all - he enjoys sense-objects without the senses - I take refuge in that Vasudeva."

जीवस्वरूपेण बिभर्ति लोकांस्ततः स्वमूर्तान्सचराचरांश्च ।। निष्केवलो ज्ञानमयः सुशुद्धस्तं वासुदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये
jīvasvarūpeṇa bibharti lokāṁstataḥ svamūrtānsacarācarāṁśca niṣkevalo jñānamayaḥ suśuddhastaṁ vāsudevaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye
"In the form of the individual soul he sustains the worlds, then, in his own embodied forms, both moving and unmoving; wholly unattached, the very embodiment of knowledge, most pure - I take refuge in that Vasudeva."
Verse 63 (padma.2.98.63)
दैत्यांतकं दुःखविनाशमूलं शांतं परं शक्तिमयं विशालम् ।। यं प्राप्य देवा विनयं प्रयांति तं वासुदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये
daityāṁtakaṁ duḥkhavināśamūlaṁ śāṁtaṁ paraṁ śaktimayaṁ viśālam yaṁ prāpya devā vinayaṁ prayāṁti taṁ vāsudevaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye
"The end of the daityas, the very root of the destruction of sorrow, peaceful, supreme, full of power, vast; by attaining whom even the gods become humble - I take refuge in that Vasudeva."

सुखं सुखांतं सुखदं सुरेशं ज्ञानार्णवं तं मुनिपं सुरेशम् ।। सत्याश्रयं सत्यगुणोपविष्टं तं वासुदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये
sukhaṁ sukhāṁtaṁ sukhadaṁ sureśaṁ jñānārṇavaṁ taṁ munipaṁ sureśam satyāśrayaṁ satyaguṇopaviṣṭaṁ taṁ vāsudevaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye
"Happiness, the end of happiness, the giver of happiness, lord of the gods, the very ocean of knowledge, that lord of sages, lord of the gods; the very refuge of truth, established in the quality of truth - I take refuge in that Vasudeva."

यज्ञांगरूपं परमार्थरूपं मायान्वितं मापतिमुग्रपुण्यम् ।। विज्ञानमेकं जगतां निवासं तं वासुदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये
yajñāṁgarūpaṁ paramārtharūpaṁ māyānvitaṁ māpatimugrapuṇyam vijñānamekaṁ jagatāṁ nivāsaṁ taṁ vāsudevaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye
"The very limb of sacrifice, the form of the supreme goal, joined with maya, lord of maya, of fierce merit, the one and only knowledge, the very dwelling of the worlds - I take refuge in that Vasudeva."

अंभोधिमध्ये शयनं हितस्य नागांगभोगे शयनं विशाले ।। श्रीपादपद्मद्वयमेव तस्य तद्वासुदेवस्य नमामि नित्यम्
aṁbhodhimadhye śayanaṁ hitasya nāgāṁgabhoge śayanaṁ viśāle śrīpādapadmadvayameva tasya tadvāsudevasya namāmi nityam
"His lying in the midst of the ocean, for the good of all, his lying upon the vast coils of the serpent's body - to those two glorious lotus feet of his I ever bow."
Verse 67 (padma.2.98.67)
पुण्यान्वितं शंकरमेव नित्यं तीर्थैरनेकैः परिसेव्यमानम् ।। तत्पादपद्मद्वयमेव तस्य श्रीवासुदेवस्य अघापहं तत्
puṇyānvitaṁ śaṁkarameva nityaṁ tīrthairanekaiḥ parisevyamānam tatpādapadmadvayameva tasya śrīvāsudevasya aghāpahaṁ tat
"Ever joined with merit, ever the very Shankara, ever served by countless holy places - those same two lotus feet of that Shri Vasudeva remove all sin."
Verse 68 (padma.2.98.68)
पादांबुजं रक्तमहोत्पलाभमंभोजसल्लिंगजयोपयुक्तम् ।। अलंकृतं नूपुरमुद्रिकाभिः श्रीवासुदेवस्य नमामि नित्यम्
pādāṁbujaṁ raktamahotpalābhamaṁbhojasalliṁgajayopayuktam alaṁkṛtaṁ nūpuramudrikābhiḥ śrīvāsudevasya namāmi nityam
"His lotus feet, the color of a great red lotus, adorned with the very mark of the lotus, adorned with anklets and rings - I bow always to those of Shri Vasudeva."
Verse 69 (padma.2.98.69)
देवैः सुसिद्धैर्मुनिभिः सदैव नुतं सुभक्त्या उरगाधिपैश्च ।। तत्पादपंकेरुहमेवपुण्यं श्रीवासुदेवस्य नमामि नित्यम्
devaiḥ susiddhairmunibhiḥ sadaiva nutaṁ subhaktyā uragādhipaiśca tatpādapaṁkeruhamevapuṇyaṁ śrīvāsudevasya namāmi nityam
"Ever praised with true devotion by gods, by siddhas, and by sages, and by the lords of serpents - that holy lotus-like foot of Shri Vasudeva I bow to always."
Verse 70 (padma.2.98.70)
यस्यापि पादांभसि मज्जमानाः पूता दिवं यांति विकल्मषास्ते ।। मोक्षं लभंते मुनयः सुतुष्टास्तं वासुदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये
yasyāpi pādāṁbhasi majjamānāḥ pūtā divaṁ yāṁti vikalmaṣāste mokṣaṁ labhaṁte munayaḥ sutuṣṭāstaṁ vāsudevaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye
"Those who, immersed in the water of his very feet, purified and free of taint, go to heaven; sages, well satisfied, attain liberation there - I take refuge in that Vasudeva."
Verse 71 (padma.2.98.71)
पादोदकं तिष्ठति यत्र विष्णोर्गंगादितीर्थानि सदैव तत्र ।। पिबंति येद्यापि सपापदेहास्ते यांति शुद्धाः सुगृहं मुरारेः
pādodakaṁ tiṣṭhati yatra viṣṇorgaṁgāditīrthāni sadaiva tatra pibaṁti yedyāpi sapāpadehāste yāṁti śuddhāḥ sugṛhaṁ murāreḥ
"Wherever the water that has washed Vishnu's feet remains, there the Ganga and other sacred fords are ever present; whoever, even sinful in body, drinks it, goes purified to the beautiful abode of Murari."
Verse 72 (padma.2.98.72)
पादोदकेनाप्यभिषिच्यमाना उग्रैश्च पापैः परिलिप्तदेहाः ।। ते यांति मुक्तिं परमेश्वरस्य तस्यैव पादौ सततं नमामि
pādodakenāpyabhiṣicyamānā ugraiśca pāpaiḥ pariliptadehāḥ te yāṁti muktiṁ parameśvarasya tasyaiva pādau satataṁ namāmi
"Those consecrated even with the water of his feet, their bodies smeared with terrible sins, attain the liberation of the Supreme Lord - to his very feet I bow continually."
Verse 73 (padma.2.98.73)
नैवेद्यमात्रेण सुभक्षितेन सुचक्रिणस्तस्य महात्मनस्तु ।। श्रीवाजपेयस्य फलं लभंते सर्वार्थयुक्ताश्च नरा भवंति
naivedyamātreṇa subhakṣitena sucakriṇastasya mahātmanastu śrīvājapeyasya phalaṁ labhaṁte sarvārthayuktāśca narā bhavaṁti
"By the mere offering, well eaten, of that great soul who bears the fine discus, men obtain the fruit of the glorious Vajapeya sacrifice, and become possessed of every aim."
Verse 74 (padma.2.98.74)
नारायणं तं नरकाधिनाशनं मायाविहीनं सकलं गुणज्ञम् ।। यं ध्यायमानाः सुगतिं प्रयांति तं वासुदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये
nārāyaṇaṁ taṁ narakādhināśanaṁ māyāvihīnaṁ sakalaṁ guṇajñam yaṁ dhyāyamānāḥ sugatiṁ prayāṁti taṁ vāsudevaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye
"Narayana, the destroyer of the lord of hell, free from illusion, knower of all qualities - those who meditate upon him attain the good destiny - I take refuge in that Vasudeva."
Verse 75 (padma.2.98.75)
यो वंद्यस्त्वृषिसिद्धचारणगणैर्देवैः सदा पूज्यते ।। यो विश्वस्य विसृष्टिहेतुकरणे ब्रह्मादिदेवप्रभुः ।। यः संसारमहार्णवे निपतितस्योद्धारको वत्सल-। स्तस्यैवापि नमाम्यहं सुचरणौ भक्त्या वरौ पावनौ
yo vaṁdyastvṛṣisiddhacāraṇagaṇairdevaiḥ sadā pūjyate yo viśvasya visṛṣṭihetukaraṇe brahmādidevaprabhuḥ yaḥ saṁsāramahārṇave nipatitasyoddhārako vatsala- stasyaivāpi namāmyahaṁ sucaraṇau bhaktyā varau pāvanau
"- who, as the cause of the creation of the universe, is the lord of Brahma and the other gods; who is the deliverer, full of tenderness, of one who has fallen into the great ocean of samsara - to his own excellent, purifying feet I bow with devotion."
Verse 76 (padma.2.98.76)
यो दृष्टो मखमंडपे सुरगणैः श्रीवामनः सामगः ।। सामोद्गीतकुतूहलः सुरगणैस्त्रैलोक्य एकः प्रभुः । । कुर्वंतं नयनेक्षणैः शुभकरैर्निष्पापतां तद्बले-। स्तस्याहं चरणारविंदयुगलं वंदे परं पावनम्
yo dṛṣṭo makhamaṁḍape suragaṇaiḥ śrīvāmanaḥ sāmagaḥ sāmodgītakutūhalaḥ suragaṇaistrailokya ekaḥ prabhuḥ kurvaṁtaṁ nayanekṣaṇaiḥ śubhakarairniṣpāpatāṁ tadbale- stasyāhaṁ caraṇāraviṁdayugalaṁ vaṁde paraṁ pāvanam
"He who was seen in the sacrificial pavilion by the hosts of gods, the glorious Vamana, the singer of the Sama, delighting in the Sama-chant, the one lord of the three worlds among the hosts of gods; who, with his auspicious glances, made that mighty one sinless, along with his forces - to his pair of lotus feet, most purifying, I bow."
Verse 77 (padma.2.98.77)
राजंतं द्विजमंडले मखमुखे ब्रह्मश्रियाशोभितं ।। दिव्येनापि सुतेजसा करमयं यं चेंद्रनीलोपमम् । देवानां हितकाम्यया सुतनुजं वैरोचनस्यापि तं-। याचंतं मम दीयतां त्रिपदकं वंदे प्रभुं वामनम्
rājaṁtaṁ dvijamaṁḍale makhamukhe brahmaśriyāśobhitaṁ divyenāpi sutejasā karamayaṁ yaṁ ceṁdranīlopamam devānāṁ hitakāmyayā sutanujaṁ vairocanasyāpi taṁ- yācaṁtaṁ mama dīyatāṁ tripadakaṁ vaṁde prabhuṁ vāmanam
"Shining in the assembly of brahmins, adorned with the glory of Brahman in the midst of the sacrifice, of divine radiance, dark as sapphire in hue; who, for the welfare of the gods, asked that fine son of Virochana, 'Let three paces be given to me' - to that lord Vamana I bow."

तं द्रष्टुं रविमंडले मुनिगणैः संप्राप्तवंतं दिवं ।। चंद्रार्कास्तमयांतरे किल पदा संच्छादयंतं तदा ।। तस्यैवापि सुचक्रिणः सुरगणाः प्रापुर्लयं सांप्रतं-। का ये विश्वविकोशकेतमतुलं नौमि प्रभोर्विक्रमम्
taṁ draṣṭuṁ ravimaṁḍale munigaṇaiḥ saṁprāptavaṁtaṁ divaṁ caṁdrārkāstamayāṁtare kila padā saṁcchādayaṁtaṁ tadā tasyaivāpi sucakriṇaḥ suragaṇāḥ prāpurlayaṁ sāṁprataṁ- kā ye viśvavikośaketamatulaṁ naumi prabhorvikramam
He whom hosts of sages went to heaven to behold in the orb of the sun; who, between the setting of the moon and the sun, covered all with his foot; whose hosts of gods, wielder of that fine discus, now attain dissolution [in him] - to him, the banner of the whole universe, matchless, I bow to the valor of that Lord.
