The Pilgrimage Continues: From Jambumarga to the Narmada
Verse 1 (padma.3.12.1)
वसिष्ठ उवाच । प्रदक्षिणमुपावृत्तो जंबूमार्गे समाविशेत् । जंबूमार्गं समाविश्य पितृदेवर्षिपूजितम्
vasiṣṭha uvāca pradakṣiṇamupāvṛtto jaṁbūmārge samāviśet jaṁbūmārgaṁ samāviśya pitṛdevarṣipūjitam
Vasishtha said: Turning back from the circumambulation, one should enter the Jambu-path; having entered the Jambu-path, honored by ancestors, gods, and seers,
Verse 2 (padma.3.12.2)
अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति विष्णुलोकं च गच्छति । तत्रोष्य रजनीः पंच षष्ठकालेश्नुवन्नरः
aśvamedhamavāpnoti viṣṇulokaṁ ca gacchati tatroṣya rajanīḥ paṁca ṣaṣṭhakāleśnuvannaraḥ
one obtains the fruit of the Ashvamedha and goes to the world of Vishnu. Having dwelt there five nights, taking food only at the sixth period,
Verse 3 (padma.3.12.3)
न दुर्गतिमवाप्नोति सिद्धिं चाप्नोत्यनुत्तमाम् । जंबुमार्गादुपावृत्तो गच्छेत्तु दुलिकाश्रमम्
na durgatimavāpnoti siddhiṁ cāpnotyanuttamām jaṁbumārgādupāvṛtto gacchettu dulikāśramam
one does not fall into an evil state and attains supreme accomplishment. Turning back from Jambumarga, one should go to the hermitage of Dulika.
Verse 4 (padma.3.12.4)
न दुर्गतिमवाप्नोति स्वर्गलोके च पूज्यते । अगस्त्याश्रममासाद्य पितृदेवार्चने रतः
na durgatimavāpnoti svargaloke ca pūjyate agastyāśramamāsādya pitṛdevārcane rataḥ
There too, no evil state is attained, and one is honored in the heavenly world. Having reached the hermitage of Agastya, devoted to the worship of ancestors and gods,
Verse 5 (padma.3.12.5)
त्रिरात्रोपोषितो राजन्नग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् । शाकवृत्तिः फलैर्वापि कौमारं विंदते परम्
trirātropoṣito rājannagniṣṭomaphalaṁ labhet śākavṛttiḥ phalairvāpi kaumāraṁ viṁdate param
O king, by fasting three nights one obtains the fruit of the Agnishtoma sacrifice; by living on wild greens or on fruits, one attains the supreme state of Kaumara.
Verse 6 (padma.3.12.6)
कन्याश्रमं समासाद्य श्रीपुष्टं लोकपूजितम् । धर्मारण्यं हि तत्पुण्यमाद्यं च पार्थिवर्षभ
kanyāśramaṁ samāsādya śrīpuṣṭaṁ lokapūjitam dharmāraṇyaṁ hi tatpuṇyamādyaṁ ca pārthivarṣabha
O bull among kings, having reached Kanyashrama, prosperous with glory and honored by the world — that is the sacred and primeval Dharmaranya,
Verse 7 (padma.3.12.7)
यत्र प्रविष्टमात्रो वै पापेभ्यो विप्रमुच्यते । अर्चयित्वा पितॄन्देवान्प्रयतो नियताशनः
yatra praviṣṭamātro vai pāpebhyo vipramucyate arcayitvā pitṝndevānprayato niyatāśanaḥ
where merely by entering, a person is freed from sins; having worshipped the ancestors and gods, restrained and disciplined in diet,
Verse 8 (padma.3.12.8)
सर्वकामसमृद्धस्य यज्ञस्य फलमश्नुते । प्रादक्षिण्यं ततः कृत्वा ययातिपतनं व्रजेत्
sarvakāmasamṛddhasya yajñasya phalamaśnute prādakṣiṇyaṁ tataḥ kṛtvā yayātipatanaṁ vrajet
he obtains the fruit of a sacrifice abounding in every desired object. Then, having performed circumambulation, one should proceed to Yayati-patana,
Verse 9 (padma.3.12.9)
हयमेधस्य यज्ञस्य फलमाप्नोति तत्र वै । महाकालमतो गच्छेन्नियतो नियताशनः
hayamedhasya yajñasya phalamāpnoti tatra vai mahākālamato gacchenniyato niyatāśanaḥ
where he obtains the fruit of the Ashvamedha (horse-) sacrifice. From there, disciplined and restrained in diet, one should go to Mahakala,
Verse 10 (padma.3.12.10)
कोटितीर्थमुपस्पृश्य हयमेधफलं लभेत् । ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ स्थानं तीर्थमुमापतेः
koṭitīrthamupaspṛśya hayamedhaphalaṁ labhet tato gaccheta dharmajña sthānaṁ tīrthamumāpateḥ
and, having touched the Koti-tirtha, one obtains the fruit of the Ashvamedha. Then, O knower of dharma, one should go to the tirtha-place of Uma's Lord,
Verse 11 (padma.3.12.11)
नाम्ना भद्रवटं नाम त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम् । तत्राभिगम्य चेशानं गोसहस्रफलं लभेत्
nāmnā bhadravaṭaṁ nāma triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam tatrābhigamya ceśānaṁ gosahasraphalaṁ labhet
renowned in all three worlds by the name Bhadravata; there, having approached Ishana, one obtains the fruit of the gift of a thousand cows.
Verse 12 (padma.3.12.12)
महादेवप्रसादाच्च गाणपत्यमवाप्नुयात् । समृद्धमसपत्नं तु श्रियायुक्तं नरोत्तम
mahādevaprasādācca gāṇapatyamavāpnuyāt samṛddhamasapatnaṁ tu śriyāyuktaṁ narottama
O best of men, by Mahadeva's grace, one obtains the state of Ganapatya, prosperous, without rival, and endowed with glory.
Verse 13 (padma.3.12.13)
नर्मदां तु समासाद्य नदीं त्रैलोक्यविश्रुताम् । तर्पयित्वा पितॄन्देवानग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत्
narmadāṁ tu samāsādya nadīṁ trailokyaviśrutām tarpayitvā pitṝndevānagniṣṭomaphalaṁ labhet
Then, having reached the river Narmada, renowned throughout the three worlds, and having performed the tarpana for ancestors and gods, one obtains the fruit of the Agnishtoma.
