Together with women, children, and the aged, with cattle, birds, and horses, the pitiless fire, driven by Hara's wrath, consumed everything.

Verse 30 (padma.3.15.30)

sapatnīkāścaiva suptāḥ saṁsuptā bahavo janāḥ putramāliṁgyate gāḍhaṁ dahyaṁte tripurāriṇā

Many people, asleep together with their wives, tightly embracing their sons, were consumed by the fire of the Enemy of Tripura.

Verse 31 (padma.3.15.31)

yadi tvamicchase vairaṁ puruṣeṣvapakāriṣu striyaḥ kimaparādhyaṁte gṛhapaṁjarakokilāḥ

'If you seek vengeance upon guilty men, what wrong have women committed — we who are but cuckoos caged within our own homes?'

Verse 37 (padma.3.15.37)

na nivartati yanmamapāpagatiḥ śucikarmmaviśuddhamapi tyajati anukaṁpati digbhramati bhramati bhrama eṣa kubuddhi nivārayati

'My sinful course does not turn back; it forsakes even pure deeds, however purified they are. Have compassion — I wander confused in every direction; dispel this confusion, this ill-wrought understanding.'

Verse 61 (padma.3.15.61)

yaḥ paṭhettoṭakaṁ divyaṁ prayataḥ śucimānasaḥ bāṇasyaiva yathārudrastasyaiva varado bhavet

Whoever recites this divine Totaka hymn, disciplined and of pure mind — for him too, just as for Bana, that same Rudra becomes the granter of boons.

Verse 62 (padma.3.15.62)

imaṁ stavaṁ mahādivyaṁ śrutvā devo maheśvaraḥ prasannastu tadā tasya svayaṁ devo maheśvaraḥ

Having heard this greatly divine hymn, the god Maheshvara himself became pleased with him.

Verse 63 (padma.3.15.63)

īśvara uvāca na bhetavyaṁ tvayā vatsa sauvarṇe tiṣṭha dānava putrapautrasapatnīnāṁ bhāryābhṛtyajanaiḥ saha

Ishvara said: 'You need not fear, my child; abide, O Danava, in your golden city, together with your sons, grandsons, co-wives, wives, and servants.'

Verse 64 (padma.3.15.64)

adyaprabhṛti bāṇa tvamavadhyastridaśairapi bhūyastasya varo datto devadevena pāṁḍava

'From this day forth, O Bana, you shall be unslayable even by the thirty gods.' Thus, O Pandava, a further boon was granted to him by the God of gods.

Verse 65 (padma.3.15.65)

akṣayaścāvyayo loke vicacāra ha nirbhayaḥ tato nivārayāmāsa rudra saptaśikhaṁ tathā

Imperishable and undecaying, he then wandered fearlessly in the world. Then Rudra held back the seven-flamed [city] as well,

Verse 66 (padma.3.15.66)

tṛtīyaṁ rakṣitaṁ tasya śaṁkareṇa mahātmanā bhramate gagane nityaṁ rudratejaḥ prabhāvataḥ

and the third of his cities was preserved by the great-souled Shankara; it wanders forever in the sky, by the power of Rudra's own splendor.

Verse 67 (padma.3.15.67)

evaṁ tu tripuraṁ dagdhaṁ śaṁkareṇa mahātmanā jvālāmālāpradīptaṁ tu patitaṁ dharaṇītale

Thus was Tripura burned by the great-souled Shankara; wreathed in garlands of flame, it fell upon the surface of the earth.

Verse 68 (padma.3.15.68)

ekaṁ nipātitaṁ tasya śrīśaile tripurāṁtake dvitīyaṁ pātitaṁ tatra parvate'marakaṁṭake

One portion fell at Shri Shaila, the place of Tripura's ending; the second portion fell there, upon the mountain Amarakantaka.

Verse 69 (padma.3.15.69)

dagdhe tu tripure rājanrudrakoṭiḥ pratiṣṭhitā jvalaṁtaṁ pātitaṁ tatra tena jvāleśvaraḥ smṛtaḥ

O king, when Tripura was burned, a crore of Rudras became established there; because of that blazing portion falling there, the place came to be remembered as Jvaleshvara.

Verse 70 (padma.3.15.70)

ūrdhvena prasthitā tasya divyā jvālā divaṁ gatā hāhākārastadā jāto sadevāsurakiṁnarān

Its divine flame rose upward and reached the heavens; then a great cry of woe arose among gods, asuras, and kinnaras alike.

Verse 71 (padma.3.15.71)

taṁ śaraṁ staṁbhayedrudro māheśvarapurottame evaṁ vrajeta yastasminparvate'marakaṁṭake

Rudra shall arrest that arrow at Maheshvara's finest city itself. Thus should one proceed who travels to that place, the mountain Amarakantaka —

Verse 72 (padma.3.15.72)

caturddaśabhuvanāni subhuktvā pāṁḍunaṁdana varṣakoṭisahasraṁ tu triṁśatkoṭyastathā parāḥ

he, O joy of the Pandus, having fully enjoyed the fourteen worlds, for a thousand crore years, and thirty crore more besides,

Verse 73 (padma.3.15.73)

tato mahītalaṁ prāpya rājā bhavati dhārmikaḥ pṛthivyāmekacchatreṇa bhuṁkte nāstyatra saṁśayaḥ

then, having attained the earth again, becomes a righteous king. He rules the earth under a single royal parasol — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 74 (padma.3.15.74)

puṁḍarīkasya yajñasya phalaṁ prāpnoti mānavaḥ tatra jvāleśvaro nāma parvate'marakaṁṭake

A man obtains the fruit of the Pundarika sacrifice. There, at the mountain Amarakantaka, is the tirtha named Jvaleshvara,

tatra snātvā divaṁ yāṁti ye mṛtāste'punarbhavāḥ jvāleśvare mahārāja yastu prāṇānparityajet

and those who, having bathed there, die, go to heaven and are not born again. O great king, whoever gives up his life-breath at Jvaleshvara —

Verse 79 (padma.3.15.79)

caṁdra sūryoparāge tu bhaktyāpi śṛṇu tatphalam amarā nāma devāste parvate'marakaṁṭake

hear now the fruit of doing this with devotion, during an eclipse of the moon or sun: the gods called the Amaras, at the mountain Amarakantaka —

Verse 80 (padma.3.15.80)

rudralokamavāpnoti yāvadābhūtasaṁplavam amareśvarasya devasya parvatasya taṭe jale

he attains the world of Rudra, until the great dissolution of all beings. On the bank of the god Amareshvara, in the water at the foot of the mountain,

Verse 81 (padma.3.15.81)
