Svarga Khanda · Chapter 49
Yudhishthira's Consecration and Krishna's Counsel on Prayaga
Verse 1 (padma.3.49.1)
sūta uvāca bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitāḥ sarve pāṁḍavā dharmaniścayāḥ brāhmaṇebhyo namaskṛtvāgurudevāṁstvatarpayan
Suta said: All the Pandavas, together with their brothers, resolved on dharma, having bowed to the Brahmins, made offerings to their elders and to the gods.
Verse 2 (padma.3.49.2)
vāsudevo'pi tatraiva kṣaṇenābhyāgatastadā pāṁḍavaiḥ sahitaiḥ sarvaiḥ pūjyamānaḥ sa mādhavaḥ
Vasudeva too then arrived there in an instant; that Madhava was honored by all the Pandavas together.
Verse 3 (padma.3.49.3)
kṛṣṇena sahitaiḥ sarvaiḥ punareva mahātmabhiḥ abhiṣiktaḥ svarājye tu dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
Together with Krishna, and all the great souls once more, the son of Dharma, Yudhishthira, was consecrated in his own kingdom.
Verse 4 (padma.3.49.4)
etasminnaṁtare caiva mārkaṁḍeyo mahātmavān tataḥ svastīti coktvā vai kṣaṇādāśramamāgataḥ
At that same time, the great-souled Markandeya, having said 'may it be well,' then in an instant returned to his hermitage.
Verse 5 (padma.3.49.5)
yudhiṣṭhiro'pi dharmātmā bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitastu saḥ mahādānaṁ dadau cātha dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
And the righteous-souled Yudhishthira, together with his brothers, the son of Dharma, then gave great gifts.
Verse 6 (padma.3.49.6)
yastvidaṁ kalyamutthāya paṭhate vā śṛṇoti vā mucyate sarvapāpebhyo viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati
Whoever, rising at dawn, recites this or even hears it, is freed from all sins and goes to the world of Vishnu.
Verse 7 (padma.3.49.7)
vāsudeva uvāca mama vākyaṁ tu kartavyaṁ tava snehādbravīmyaham nityaṁ yajñarato bhūtvā prayāge vigatajvaraḥ
Vasudeva said: My word should be followed; I speak out of love for you. Ever devoted to sacrifice, free of anguish, at Prayaga —
Verse 8 (padma.3.49.8)
prayāgaṁ saṁsmarannityaṁ sahāsmābhiryudhiṣṭhira svayaṁ prāpsyasi rājeṁdra svargalokaṁ tu śāśvatam
constantly remembering Prayaga together with us, O Yudhishthira — you shall yourself attain, O lord of kings, the eternal Svargaloka.
Verse 9 (padma.3.49.9)
prayāgamanugacchedvā vasate vāpi yo naraḥ sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā svargalokaṁ ca gacchati
Whatever man follows the path to Prayaga, or dwells there, his soul purified of all sin, goes to Svargaloka.
Verse 10 (padma.3.49.10)
pratigrahādupāvṛttaḥ santuṣṭo niyataḥ śuciḥ
One who has turned away from improper acceptance of gifts, content, disciplined, and pure —
Verse 11 (padma.3.49.11)
ahaṁkāranivṛttaśca sa tīrthaphalamaśnute akopanaśca rājeṁdra satyavādī dṛḍhavrataḥ ātmopamaśca bhūteṣu sa tīrthaphalamaśnute
and free from egotism — he enjoys the fruit of the tirtha. And one who is free of anger, O lord of kings, a speaker of truth, of firm vows, and who regards all beings as equal to himself — he enjoys the fruit of the tirtha.
Verse 12 (padma.3.49.12)
ṛṣibhiḥ kratavaḥ proktā devaiścāpi yathākramam na hi śakyā daridreṇa yajñāḥ prāptuṁ mahīpate
Sacrifices have been prescribed by sages and by gods, each in due order; but a poor man is indeed unable to obtain sacrifices, O lord of the earth.
Verse 13 (padma.3.49.13)
bahūpakaraṇo yajño nānāsaṁbhārasaṁbhramaḥ prāpyate vividhairarthyaiḥ samṛddhairvā naraiḥ kvacit
A sacrifice, requiring many implements, involving the gathering of various materials, is obtained only occasionally, by men of various means or those who are wealthy.
Verse 14 (padma.3.49.14)
yo daridrairapi budhaiḥ śakyaḥ prāptuṁ nareśvara tato yajñaphalaiḥ puṇyaistannibodha janeśvara
But that merit which can be obtained even by the poor, if wise, O lord of men — learn of that, O ruler of the people, through the meritorious fruits of sacrifice.
Verse 15 (padma.3.49.15)
ṛṣīṇāṁ paramaṁ guhyamidaṁ bharatasattama tīrthābhigamanaṁ puṇyaṁ yajñairapi viśiṣyate
This is the supreme secret of the sages, O best of the Bharatas: the meritorious act of going to a tirtha is distinguished even above sacrifices.
Verse 16 (padma.3.49.16)
daśakoṭisahasrāṇi triṁśatkoṭyastathāpare māghamāse tu gaṁgāyāṁ gamiṣyaṁti nararṣabha
O bull among men, ten billion, and thirty million others besides, shall go to the Ganga in the month of Magha.
Verse 17 (padma.3.49.17)
svastho bhava mahārāja bhuktvā rājyamakaṁṭakam punardrakṣyasi rājeṁdra yajamāno viśeṣataḥ
Be at peace, O great king; enjoy your kingdom free of thorns. You shall see this again, O lord of kings, especially as one who performs sacrifice.
