Verse 1 (padma.5.10.1)

शेष उवाच। इत्थं संशृण्वतो धर्मान्वसंतः समुपस्थितः । यत्र यज्ञ क्रियादीनां प्रारंभः सुमहात्मनाम्

śeṣa uvāca itthaṁ saṁśṛṇvato dharmānvasaṁtaḥ samupasthitaḥ yatra yajña kriyādīnāṁ prāraṁbhaḥ sumahātmanām

Shesha said: Thus, while they listened to the dharmas, spring arrived, the season in which great souls begin their sacrificial rites.

Verse 2 (padma.5.10.2)

दृष्ट्वा तं समयं धीमान्वसिष्ठः कलशोद्भवः । रामचंद्रं महाराजं प्रत्युवाच यथोचितम्

dṛṣṭvā taṁ samayaṁ dhīmānvasiṣṭhaḥ kalaśodbhavaḥ rāmacaṁdraṁ mahārājaṁ pratyuvāca yathocitam

Seeing that the time had come, wise Vasishtha, born of the pitcher, spoke fittingly to great King Ramachandra —

Verse 3 (padma.5.10.3)

वसिष्ठ उवाच। रामचंद्र महाबाहो समयः पर्यभूत्तव । हयो यत्र प्रमुच्येत यज्ञार्थं परिपूजितः

vasiṣṭha uvāca rāmacaṁdra mahābāho samayaḥ paryabhūttava hayo yatra pramucyeta yajñārthaṁ paripūjitaḥ

Vasishtha said: "Ramachandra, mighty-armed, your time has come — when the duly worshipped horse should be released for the sacrifice."

Verse 4 (padma.5.10.4)

सामग्री क्रियतां तत्र आहूयंतां द्विजोत्तमाः । करोतु पूजां भगवान्ब्राह्मणानां यथोचिताम्

sāmagrī kriyatāṁ tatra āhūyaṁtāṁ dvijottamāḥ karotu pūjāṁ bhagavānbrāhmaṇānāṁ yathocitām

"Let the materials be prepared there, let the finest of the twice-born be summoned; let the Lord duly worship the brahmins."

Verse 5 (padma.5.10.5)

दीनांधकृपणानां च दानं स्वांते समुत्थितम् । ददातु विधिवत्तेषां प्रतिपूज्याधिमान्य च

dīnāṁdhakṛpaṇānāṁ ca dānaṁ svāṁte samutthitam dadātu vidhivatteṣāṁ pratipūjyādhimānya ca

"Let him give, in due form and with honor, gifts arising from the heart to the poor, the blind, and the destitute."

Verse 6 (padma.5.10.6)

भवान्कनकसत्पत्न्या दीक्षितोऽत्र व्रतं चर । भूमिशायी ब्रह्मचारी वसुभोगविवर्जितः

bhavānkanakasatpatnyā dīkṣito'tra vrataṁ cara bhūmiśāyī brahmacārī vasubhogavivarjitaḥ

"Consecrated here together with your golden consort, observe the vow — sleeping on the ground, remaining celibate, forsaking the enjoyment of wealth,"

Verse 7 (padma.5.10.7)

मृगशृंगधरः कट्यां मेखलाजिनदंडभृत् । करोतु यज्ञसंभारं सर्वद्रव्यसमन्वितम्

mṛgaśṛṁgadharaḥ kaṭyāṁ mekhalājinadaṁḍabhṛt karotu yajñasaṁbhāraṁ sarvadravyasamanvitam

"bearing at the waist a deer's horn, girdle, deerskin, and staff — let all the materials of the sacrifice be made ready."

Verse 8 (padma.5.10.8)

इति श्रुत्वा महद्वाक्यं वसिष्ठस्य यथार्थकम् । उवाच लक्ष्मणं धीमान्नानार्थपरिबृंहितम्

iti śrutvā mahadvākyaṁ vasiṣṭhasya yathārthakam uvāca lakṣmaṇaṁ dhīmānnānārthaparibṛṁhitam

Having heard this great, true speech of Vasishtha, wise Rama spoke to Lakshmana words laden with many meanings —

Verse 9 (padma.5.10.9)

श्रीराम उवाच। शृणु लक्ष्मण मद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा तत्कुरु सत्वरम् । हयमानय यत्नेन वाजिमेधक्रियोचितम्

śrīrāma uvāca śṛṇu lakṣmaṇa madvākyaṁ śrutvā tatkuru satvaram hayamānaya yatnena vājimedhakriyocitam

Shri Rama said: "Listen, Lakshmana, to my words, and having heard them, act at once — bring, with all effort, the horse fit for the rite of the horse-sacrifice."

Verse 10 (padma.5.10.10)

शेष उवाच। श्रुत्वा वाक्यं रघुपतेः शत्रुजिल्लक्ष्मणस्तदा । सेनापतिमुवाचेदं वचो विविधवर्णनम्

śeṣa uvāca śrutvā vākyaṁ raghupateḥ śatrujillakṣmaṇastadā senāpatimuvācedaṁ vaco vividhavarṇanam

Shesha said: Having heard the lord of the Raghus' words, Lakshmana, conqueror of enemies, spoke this elaborate speech to the commander of the army —

Verse 11 (padma.5.10.11)

लक्ष्मण उवाच। वीराकर्णय मे वचः सुमधुरं श्रुत्वा त्वरातः पुनः । कार्यं तत्क्षितिपालमौलिमुकुटैर्घृष्टांघ्रि रामाज्ञया । सेनां कालबलप्रभंजनबलप्रोद्यत्समर्थांगिनीं । सज्जां सद्रथहस्तिपत्तिसुहयारोहैर्विधे ह्यन्विताम्

lakṣmaṇa uvāca vīrākarṇaya me vacaḥ sumadhuraṁ śrutvā tvarātaḥ punaḥ kāryaṁ tatkṣitipālamaulimukuṭairghṛṣṭāṁghri rāmājñayā senāṁ kālabalaprabhaṁjanabalaprodyatsamarthāṁginīṁ sajjāṁ sadrathahastipattisuhayārohairvidhe hyanvitām

Lakshmana said: "O hero, listen to my sweet words, and having heard, act at once as commanded by Rama, whose feet are worn smooth by the crowns of kings — make ready the army, its limbs mighty as time itself, complete with fine chariots, elephants, foot-soldiers, and skilled horsemen."

Verse 12 (padma.5.10.12)

सज्जीयतां वायुजवास्तुरंगास्तरंगमाला ललितांघ्रिपाताः । सदश्वचारैर्बहुशस्त्रधारिभिः संरोहिता वैरिबलप्रहारिभिः

sajjīyatāṁ vāyujavāsturaṁgāstaraṁgamālā lalitāṁghripātāḥ sadaśvacārairbahuśastradhāribhiḥ saṁrohitā vairibalaprahāribhiḥ

"Let the horses, swift as the wind, moving with a wave's rippling gait, mounted by skilled riders bearing many weapons, strikers of the enemy's forces, be made ready."

Verse 13 (padma.5.10.13)

संलक्ष्यतां हस्तिनः पर्वताभा आधोरणैः प्रासकुंताग्रहस्तैः । शूरैः सास्त्रैर्भूरिदानोपहाराः क्षीबाणस्ते सर्वशस्त्रास्त्रपूर्णाः

saṁlakṣyatāṁ hastinaḥ parvatābhā ādhoraṇaiḥ prāsakuṁtāgrahastaiḥ śūraiḥ sāstrairbhūridānopahārāḥ kṣībāṇaste sarvaśastrāstrapūrṇāḥ

"Let the mountain-like elephants be marked out, with mahouts bearing lances and spears, armed heroes upon them, streaming with abundant musth, filled with every weapon and missile."

Verse 14 (padma.5.10.14)

विततबहुसमृद्धिभ्राजमाना रथा मे पवनजवनवेगैर्वाजिभिर्युज्यमानाः । विविधरिपुविनाशस्मारकैरायुधास्त्रैर्भृतवलभिविभागानीयतां सूतवृंदैः

vitatabahusamṛddhibhrājamānā rathā me pavanajavanavegairvājibhiryujyamānāḥ vividharipuvināśasmārakairāyudhāstrairbhṛtavalabhivibhāgānīyatāṁ sūtavṛṁdaiḥ

"Let my chariots, resplendent with vast opulence, yoked with wind-swift horses, laden with weapons recalling the destruction of many enemies, be brought section by section by throngs of charioteers."

Verse 15 (padma.5.10.15)

पत्तयः शतशो मह्यमायांत्वस्त्राग्न्यपाणयः । हयमेधार्हवाहस्य रक्षणे विततोद्यमाः

pattayaḥ śataśo mahyamāyāṁtvastrāgnyapāṇayaḥ hayamedhārhavāhasya rakṣaṇe vitatodyamāḥ

"Let hundreds of foot-soldiers come to me, weapons and fire-missiles in hand, wholly devoted to guarding the vehicle fit for the horse-sacrifice."

Verse 16 (padma.5.10.16)

इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य लक्ष्मणस्य महात्मनः । सेनानी कालजिन्नामा कारयामास सज्जताम्

ityākarṇya vacastasya lakṣmaṇasya mahātmanaḥ senānī kālajinnāmā kārayāmāsa sajjatām

Hearing these words of the great-souled Lakshmana, the general named Kalajit had everything made ready.

Verse 17 (padma.5.10.17)

दशध्रुवकमंडितो लघुसुरोमशोभान्वितो विविक्तगलशुक्तिभृद्विततकंठको शेमणिः मुखे विशदकांतिधृत्त्वसितकांतिभृत्कर्णयोर्व्यराजत तदाह यो धृतकराग्ररश्मिच्छटः

daśadhruvakamaṁḍito laghusuromaśobhānvito viviktagalaśuktibhṛdvitatakaṁṭhako śemaṇiḥ mukhe viśadakāṁtidhṛttvasitakāṁtibhṛtkarṇayorvyarājata tadāha yo dhṛtakarāgraraśmicchaṭaḥ

Adorned with ten fixed ornaments, its fine coat gleaming, bearing at its throat a spotless shell-ornament and a broad jeweled collar, its face bright with radiant beauty and its ears dark and lustrous, the horse shone forth, its mane held back in a spray like tassels of light.

Verse 18 (padma.5.10.18)

कलासंशोभितमुखः स्फुरद्रत्नविशोभितः । मुक्ताफलानां मालाभिः शोभितो निर्ययौ हयः

kalāsaṁśobhitamukhaḥ sphuradratnaviśobhitaḥ muktāphalānāṁ mālābhiḥ śobhito niryayau hayaḥ

Its face adorned with artistic ornament, shining with sparkling gems, bedecked with garlands of pearls, the horse went forth.

Verse 19 (padma.5.10.19)

श्वेतातपत्ररचितः सितचामरशोभितः । बहुशोभापरीतांगो निर्ययौ हयराट्ततः

śvetātapatraracitaḥ sitacāmaraśobhitaḥ bahuśobhāparītāṁgo niryayau hayarāṭtataḥ

Fitted with a white parasol, resplendent with white chowries, its body arrayed in abundant splendor, the king of horses then went forth.

Verse 20 (padma.5.10.20)

अग्रतो मध्यतश्चैके पृष्ठतः सैनिकास्तथा । देवा हरिं यथापूर्वं सेवंते सेवनोचितम्

agrato madhyataścaike pṛṣṭhataḥ sainikāstathā devā hariṁ yathāpūrvaṁ sevaṁte sevanocitam

Some soldiers in front, some in the middle, some behind — just as the gods have ever attended Hari, offering him the service that is his due.

Verse 21 (padma.5.10.21)

अथ सैन्यं समाहूय सर्वमाज्ञापयत्तदा । हस्त्यश्वरथपादातवृन्दैः सुबहुसंकुलम्

atha sainyaṁ samāhūya sarvamājñāpayattadā hastyaśvarathapādātavṛndaiḥ subahusaṁkulam

Then, having summoned the entire army, he gave his commands — an army thronged densely with elephants, horses, chariots, and foot-soldiers.

Verse 22 (padma.5.10.22)

ततस्ततः समेतानां सैन्यानां श्रूयते ध्वनिः । ततो दुंदुभिनादोऽभूत्तस्मिन्पुरवरे तदा

tatastataḥ sametānāṁ sainyānāṁ śrūyate dhvaniḥ tato duṁdubhinādo'bhūttasminpuravare tadā

From every side the roar of the gathered armies could be heard; then the sound of kettledrums rose in that finest of cities.

Verse 23 (padma.5.10.23)

तन्निनादेन शूराणां प्रियेण महता तदा । कंपंति गिरिशृंगाणि प्रासादा विचलंति च

tanninādena śūrāṇāṁ priyeṇa mahatā tadā kaṁpaṁti giriśṛṁgāṇi prāsādā vicalaṁti ca

At that great, beloved roar of the heroes, the mountain-peaks trembled and the palaces shook.

Verse 24 (padma.5.10.24)

हेषारवो महानासीद्वाजिनां मुह्यतां नृप । रथांगघातसंघुष्टा धरा संचलतीव सा

heṣāravo mahānāsīdvājināṁ muhyatāṁ nṛpa rathāṁgaghātasaṁghuṣṭā dharā saṁcalatīva sā

There arose, O king, the great neighing of intoxicated horses; the earth, resounding with the rumble of chariot-wheels, seemed itself to tremble.

Verse 25 (padma.5.10.25)

चलितैर्गजयूथैश्च पृथ्वी रुद्धा समंततः । रजस्तु प्रचलत्तत्र जनांतर्द्धानमादधात्

calitairgajayūthaiśca pṛthvī ruddhā samaṁtataḥ rajastu pracalattatra janāṁtarddhānamādadhāt

The earth was blocked on every side by the moving herds of elephants; and the dust that rose there made people vanish from sight.

Verse 26 (padma.5.10.26)

निर्जगाम महासैन्यं छत्रैः संछाद्य भास्करम् । सेनान्याकालजिन्नाम्ना प्रेरितं जनसंकुलम्

nirjagāma mahāsainyaṁ chatraiḥ saṁchādya bhāskaram senānyākālajinnāmnā preritaṁ janasaṁkulam

The great army, thronging with people, driven forth by the general named Kalajit, went out, its parasols covering the very sun.

Verse 27 (padma.5.10.27)

गर्जंतस्तलवीराग्र्याः कुर्वंतो रणसंभ्रमम् । रघुनाथस्य यागाय सज्जास्ते प्रययुर्मुदा

garjaṁtastalavīrāgryāḥ kurvaṁto raṇasaṁbhramam raghunāthasya yāgāya sajjāste prayayurmudā

Roaring, creating the tumult of battle, the finest heroes of the vanguard set out joyfully, ready, for Raghunatha's sacrifice.

Verse 28 (padma.5.10.28)

मृगमदमयमंगेष्वंगरागं दधानाः कुसुमविमलमालाशोभितस्वोत्तमांगाः । मुकुटकटकभूषाभूषितांगाः समस्ताः प्रययुरवनिनाथप्रेरितास्तेऽपि सर्वे

mṛgamadamayamaṁgeṣvaṁgarāgaṁ dadhānāḥ kusumavimalamālāśobhitasvottamāṁgāḥ mukuṭakaṭakabhūṣābhūṣitāṁgāḥ samastāḥ prayayuravanināthapreritāste'pi sarve

Bearing musk-perfume on their limbs, their finest heads adorned with garlands of spotless flowers, their bodies decked with crowns and bracelets, all of them, sent forth by the lord of the earth, set out together.

Verse 29 (padma.5.10.29)

इत्येवं ते महाराजं ययुः सेनाचरा वराः । धनुर्धराः पाशधराः खड्गधाराः स्फुटक्रमाः

ityevaṁ te mahārājaṁ yayuḥ senācarā varāḥ dhanurdharāḥ pāśadharāḥ khaḍgadhārāḥ sphuṭakramāḥ

Thus these finest warriors went forth to the great king — bearers of bows, bearers of nooses, wielders of swords, of clear and disciplined step.

Verse 30 (padma.5.10.30)

एवं शनैःशनैः प्राप्तो मंडपं यागचिह्नितम् । हयः खुरक्षततलां भूमिं कुर्वन्नभः प्लवन्

evaṁ śanaiḥśanaiḥ prāpto maṁḍapaṁ yāgacihnitam hayaḥ khurakṣatatalāṁ bhūmiṁ kurvannabhaḥ plavan

Thus, slowly, the horse reached the pavilion marked out for the sacrifice, its hooves scoring the ground, as if it were bounding through the very sky.

Verse 31 (padma.5.10.31)

रामो दृष्ट्वा हरिं प्राप्तं बहुसंतुष्टमानसः । वसिष्ठं प्रेरयामास क्रियाकर्तव्यतां प्रति

rāmo dṛṣṭvā hariṁ prāptaṁ bahusaṁtuṣṭamānasaḥ vasiṣṭhaṁ prerayāmāsa kriyākartavyatāṁ prati

Seeing the horse arrived, Rama's mind was greatly satisfied; he urged Vasishtha on toward the performance of the rite.

Verse 32 (padma.5.10.32)

वसिष्ठो राममाहूय स्वर्णपत्नीसमन्वितम् । प्रयोगं कारयामास ब्रह्महत्यापनोदनम्

vasiṣṭho rāmamāhūya svarṇapatnīsamanvitam prayogaṁ kārayāmāsa brahmahatyāpanodanam

Vasishtha, summoning Rama together with his golden consort, had performed the rite that removes the sin of brahmin-slaying.

Verse 33 (padma.5.10.33)

ब्रह्मचर्यव्रतधरो मृगशृंगपरिग्रहः । तत्कर्म कारयामास रामः परपुरंजयः

brahmacaryavratadharo mṛgaśṛṁgaparigrahaḥ tatkarma kārayāmāsa rāmaḥ parapuraṁjayaḥ

Bearing the vow of celibacy, holding the deer's horn, Rama, conqueror of enemy cities, had that rite performed.

Verse 34 (padma.5.10.34)

प्रारेभे यागकर्मार्थं कुंडं मण्डपसंमितम् । तत्राचार्योभवद्धीमान्वेदशास्त्रविचारवित्

prārebhe yāgakarmārthaṁ kuṁḍaṁ maṇḍapasaṁmitam tatrācāryobhavaddhīmānvedaśāstravicāravit

The sacrificial pit, sized to the pavilion, was begun for the rite; there the officiant was a wise sage, learned in the discernment of Veda and scripture.

Verse 35 (padma.5.10.35)

वसिष्ठो रघुनाथस्य कुलपूर्वगुरुर्मुनिः । ब्रह्मंस्तत्राचरद्ब्रह्मकर्मागस्त्यस्तपोनिधिः

vasiṣṭho raghunāthasya kulapūrvagururmuniḥ brahmaṁstatrācaradbrahmakarmāgastyastaponidhiḥ

Vasishtha, the ancient family guru-sage of Raghunatha's line, O brahmin, performed the brahma-rite there, together with Agastya, treasury of austerity.

Verse 36 (padma.5.10.36)

वाल्मीकिर्मुनिरध्वर्युर्मुनिः कण्वस्तु द्वारपः । अष्टौ द्वाराणि तत्रासन्सतोरण शुभानि वै

vālmīkirmuniradhvaryurmuniḥ kaṇvastu dvārapaḥ aṣṭau dvārāṇi tatrāsansatoraṇa śubhāni vai

The sage Valmiki was the adhvaryu priest; the sage Kanva was the doorkeeper. There were eight gates, adorned with festive arches, all auspicious.

Verse 37 (padma.5.10.37)

द्वारि द्वारि द्वयं विप्र ब्राह्मणस्याधिमंत्रवित् । पूर्वद्वारि मुनिश्रेष्ठौ देवलासित संज्ञितौ

dvāri dvāri dvayaṁ vipra brāhmaṇasyādhimaṁtravit pūrvadvāri muniśreṣṭhau devalāsita saṁjñitau

At each gate, O brahmin, stood a pair of brahmins learned in mantra. At the eastern gate stood the two finest sages, named Devala and Asita.

Verse 38 (padma.5.10.38)

दक्षिणद्वारि भूमानौ कश्यपात्री तपोनिधी । पश्चिमद्वारि ऋषभौ जातूकर्ण्योऽथ जाजलिः

dakṣiṇadvāri bhūmānau kaśyapātrī taponidhī paścimadvāri ṛṣabhau jātūkarṇyo'tha jājaliḥ

At the southern gate stood the two great treasuries of austerity, Kashyapa and Atri. At the western gate stood the two eminent ones, Jatukarnya and Jajali.

Verse 39 (padma.5.10.39)

उत्तरद्वारि तु मुनी द्वौ द्वितैकत तापसौ । एवं द्वारविधिं कृत्वा वसिष्ठः कलशोद्भवः

uttaradvāri tu munī dvau dvitaikata tāpasau evaṁ dvāravidhiṁ kṛtvā vasiṣṭhaḥ kalaśodbhavaḥ

At the northern gate stood two ascetic sages, Dvita and Ekata. Having thus arranged the gate-rites, Vasishtha, born of the pitcher,

Verse 40 (padma.5.10.40)

हयवर्यस्य सत्पूजां कर्तुमारभत द्विज । सुवासिन्यः स्त्रियस्तत्र वासोलंकारभूषिताः

hayavaryasya satpūjāṁ kartumārabhata dvija suvāsinyaḥ striyastatra vāsolaṁkārabhūṣitāḥ

O twice-born, began the proper worship of that excellent horse. There, married women, adorned with fine garments and ornaments,

Verse 41 (padma.5.10.41)

हरिद्राक्षतगंधाद्यैः पूजयामासुरर्चितम् । नीराजनं ततः कृत्वा धूपयित्वागुरूक्षणैः

haridrākṣatagaṁdhādyaiḥ pūjayāmāsurarcitam nīrājanaṁ tataḥ kṛtvā dhūpayitvāgurūkṣaṇaiḥ

worshipped it with turmeric, unbroken rice, sandal-paste and the like. Then, having performed the waving of lamps and fumigated it with aloeswood incense —

Verse 42 (padma.5.10.42)

वर्धापनं ततो वेश्याश्चक्रुस्ता वाडवाज्ञया । एवं संपूज्य विमले भाले चंदनचर्चिते

vardhāpanaṁ tato veśyāścakrustā vāḍavājñayā evaṁ saṁpūjya vimale bhāle caṁdanacarcite

at the brahmins' bidding, the courtesans then performed the ritual song of blessing. Having thus worshipped it, upon its spotless forehead, smeared with sandal-paste —

Verse 43 (padma.5.10.43)

कुंकुमादिकगंधाढ्ये सर्वशोभासमन्विते । बबंध भास्वरं पत्रं तप्तहाटकनिर्मितम्

kuṁkumādikagaṁdhāḍhye sarvaśobhāsamanvite babaṁdha bhāsvaraṁ patraṁ taptahāṭakanirmitam

rich with the fragrance of vermilion and the like, adorned with every splendor, he bound on the radiant document, fashioned of refined gold.

Verse 44 (padma.5.10.44)

तत्रालिखद्दाशरथेः प्रतापबलमूर्जितम् । सूर्यवंशध्वजो धन्वी धनुर्दीक्षा गुरुर्गुरुः

tatrālikhaddāśaratheḥ pratāpabalamūrjitam sūryavaṁśadhvajo dhanvī dhanurdīkṣā gururguruḥ

There he inscribed the mighty, glorious power of the son of Dasharatha — banner of the Solar dynasty, the bow-bearer, guru even to the gurus of archery's initiation,

Verse 45 (padma.5.10.45)

यं देवाः सासुराः सर्वे नमंति मणिमौलिभिः । तस्यात्मजो वीरबलदर्पहारी रघूद्वहः

yaṁ devāḥ sāsurāḥ sarve namaṁti maṇimaulibhiḥ tasyātmajo vīrabaladarpahārī raghūdvahaḥ

whom all the gods, together with the demons, bow to with their jeweled crowns; his son, who takes away the pride of heroes' strength, upholder of the Raghu line —

Verse 46 (padma.5.10.46)

रामचंद्रो महाभागः सर्वशूरशिरोमणिः । तन्माता कोसलनृपपत्नीगर्भसमुद्भवा

rāmacaṁdro mahābhāgaḥ sarvaśūraśiromaṇiḥ tanmātā kosalanṛpapatnīgarbhasamudbhavā

greatly fortunate Ramachandra, crest-jewel of all heroes; his mother, born from the womb of the queen of Kosala —

Verse 47 (padma.5.10.47)

तस्याः कुक्षिभवं रत्नं रामः शत्रुक्षयंकरः । करोति हयमेधं वै ब्राह्मणेन सुशिक्षितः

tasyāḥ kukṣibhavaṁ ratnaṁ rāmaḥ śatrukṣayaṁkaraḥ karoti hayamedhaṁ vai brāhmaṇena suśikṣitaḥ

and he, the jewel born of her womb, Rama, destroyer of enemies, well-instructed by a brahmin, performs this horse-sacrifice.

Verse 48 (padma.5.10.48)

रावणाभिधविप्रेंद्र वधपापापनुत्तये । मोचितस्तेन वाहानां मुख्योऽसौ वाजिनां वरः

rāvaṇābhidhavipreṁdra vadhapāpāpanuttaye mocitastena vāhānāṁ mukhyo'sau vājināṁ varaḥ

For the removal of the sin of slaying the brahmin-lord named Ravana, this foremost, finest of horses has been released by him,

Verse 49 (padma.5.10.49)

महाबलपरीवार परिखाभिः सुरक्षितः । तद्रक्षकोऽस्ति तद्भ्राता शत्रुघ्नो लवणांतकः

mahābalaparīvāra parikhābhiḥ surakṣitaḥ tadrakṣako'sti tadbhrātā śatrughno lavaṇāṁtakaḥ

protected by a great host of forces; its guardian is his own brother Shatrughna, destroyer of Lavana.

Verse 50 (padma.5.10.50)

हस्त्यश्वरथपादात सेनासंघसमन्वितः । यस्य राज्ञ इति श्रेष्ठो मानः स्यात्स्वबलोन्मदात्

hastyaśvarathapādāta senāsaṁghasamanvitaḥ yasya rājña iti śreṣṭho mānaḥ syātsvabalonmadāt

attended by a host of elephants, horses, chariots, and foot-soldiers — 'whichever king, in the pride of his own strength, holds himself the finest —'

Verse 51 (padma.5.10.51)

वयं धनुर्धराः शूराः श्रेष्ठा वयमिहोत्कटाः । ते गृह्णंतु बलाद्वाहं रत्नमालाविभूषितम्

vayaṁ dhanurdharāḥ śūrāḥ śreṣṭhā vayamihotkaṭāḥ te gṛhṇaṁtu balādvāhaṁ ratnamālāvibhūṣitam

'we are bow-bearing heroes, the greatest, the fiercest here' — let such a one seize by force this horse, adorned with garlands of jewels!

Verse 52 (padma.5.10.52)

मनोवेगं कामजवं सर्वगत्यधिभास्वरम् । ततो मोचयिता भ्राता शत्रुघ्नो लीलया हयम्

manovegaṁ kāmajavaṁ sarvagatyadhibhāsvaram tato mocayitā bhrātā śatrughno līlayā hayam

mind-swift, as fast as desire, more radiant than every other gait — then his brother Shatrughna would release the horse with ease,

शरासनविनिर्मुक्त वत्सदंतैः शिखाशितैः

śarāsanavinirmukta vatsadaṁtaiḥ śikhāśitaiḥ

with sharp, calf-tooth-shaped arrowheads loosed from his bow —

Verse 54 (padma.5.10.54)

इत्येवमादि विलिलेख महामुनींद्रः । श्रीरामचंद्र भुजवीर्यलसत्प्रतापम् । शोभानिधानमतिचंचलवायुवेगं । पातालभूतलविशेषगतिं मुमोच

ityevamādi vililekha mahāmunīṁdraḥ śrīrāmacaṁdra bhujavīryalasatpratāpam śobhānidhānamaticaṁcalavāyuvegaṁ pātālabhūtalaviśeṣagatiṁ mumoca

Such and more did the great lord of sages inscribe — the resplendent power of Shri Ramachandra's mighty arm, a very treasury of splendor — and then released that horse, swift as the fickle wind, bound for its special course across the netherworld and the surface of the earth.

Verse 55 (padma.5.10.55)

शत्रुघ्नमादिदेशाथ रामः शस्त्रभृतां वरः । याहि वाहस्य रक्षार्थं पृष्ठतः स्वैरगामिनः

śatrughnamādideśātha rāmaḥ śastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ yāhi vāhasya rakṣārthaṁ pṛṣṭhataḥ svairagāminaḥ

Then Rama, finest of weapon-bearers, commanded Shatrughna: "Go, for the protection of the horse, following behind it as it wanders freely."

Verse 56 (padma.5.10.56)

शत्रुघ्न गच्छ वाहस्य मार्गं भद्रं भवेत्तव । भवेतां शत्रुविजयौ रिपुकर्षण ते भुजौ

śatrughna gaccha vāhasya mārgaṁ bhadraṁ bhavettava bhavetāṁ śatruvijayau ripukarṣaṇa te bhujau

"Shatrughna, go — may the horse's path be auspicious for you; may your two arms, scourge of enemies, bring you victory over your foes."

Verse 57 (padma.5.10.57)

ये योद्धारः प्रतिरणगतास्ते त्वया वारणीया-। वाहं रक्ष स्वकगुणगणैः संयुतः सन्महोर्व्याम् । सुप्तान्भ्रष्टान्विगतवसनान्भीतभीतांस्तु नम्रां-। स्तान्मा हन्याः सुकृतकृतिनो येन शंसंति कर्म

ye yoddhāraḥ pratiraṇagatāste tvayā vāraṇīyā- vāhaṁ rakṣa svakaguṇagaṇaiḥ saṁyutaḥ sanmahorvyām suptānbhraṣṭānvigatavasanānbhītabhītāṁstu namrāṁ- stānmā hanyāḥ sukṛtakṛtino yena śaṁsaṁti karma

"Whatever warriors come forth to face you in battle, you must ward them off — but guard the horse, endowed with your own host of virtues, well, upon this great earth. Never strike down those who are asleep, fallen, stripped of garments, utterly terrified, or bowed low — for it is by such conduct that the deeds of the good are proclaimed."

Verse 58 (padma.5.10.58)

विरथा भयसंत्रस्ता ये वदंति वयं तव । ते त्वया न हि हंतव्याः शत्रुघ्न सुकृतैषिणा

virathā bhayasaṁtrastā ye vadaṁti vayaṁ tava te tvayā na hi haṁtavyāḥ śatrughna sukṛtaiṣiṇā

"Those who, chariot-less and terror-stricken, say 'We are yours' — those, Shatrughna, seeker of merit, you must never slay."

Verse 59 (padma.5.10.59)

यो हन्याद्विमदं मत्तं सुप्तं मग्नं भयातुरम् । तावकोऽहं ब्रुवाणं च स व्रजत्यधमां गतिम्

yo hanyādvimadaṁ mattaṁ suptaṁ magnaṁ bhayāturam tāvako'haṁ bruvāṇaṁ ca sa vrajatyadhamāṁ gatim

"Whoever slays one who is without pride, intoxicated, asleep, sunken, or overcome with fear, even as he claims 'I am yours' — he goes to the lowest state."

Verse 60 (padma.5.10.60)

परस्वे चित्तवृत्तिं त्वं मा कृथाः पारदारिके । नीचे रतिं न कुर्वीथाः सर्वसद्गुणपूरितः

parasve cittavṛttiṁ tvaṁ mā kṛthāḥ pāradārike nīce ratiṁ na kurvīthāḥ sarvasadguṇapūritaḥ

"Never let your mind's inclination turn toward another's wealth or another's wife; filled with every good virtue, take no delight in the base."

Verse 61 (padma.5.10.61)

वृद्धानां प्रेरणं पूर्वं मा कुर्वीथा रणं जय । पूज्यपूजातिक्रमं त्वं मा विधेहि दयान्वितः

vṛddhānāṁ preraṇaṁ pūrvaṁ mā kurvīthā raṇaṁ jaya pūjyapūjātikramaṁ tvaṁ mā vidhehi dayānvitaḥ

"Never provoke your elders first into battle, O conqueror; filled with compassion, never fail in the honor due to those worthy of honor."

Verse 62 (padma.5.10.62)

गां विप्रं च नमस्कुर्या वैष्णवं धर्मसंयुतम् । अभिवाद्य यतो गच्छेस्तत्र सिद्धिमवाप्नुयाः

gāṁ vipraṁ ca namaskuryā vaiṣṇavaṁ dharmasaṁyutam abhivādya yato gacchestatra siddhimavāpnuyāḥ

"Bow to the cow and to the brahmin devoted to Vaishnava dharma; wherever you go, having paid homage there, you shall attain success."

Verse 63 (padma.5.10.63)

विष्णुः सर्वेश्वरः साक्षी सर्वव्यापकदेहभृत् । ये तदीया महाबाहो तद्रूपा विचरंति हि

viṣṇuḥ sarveśvaraḥ sākṣī sarvavyāpakadehabhṛt ye tadīyā mahābāho tadrūpā vicaraṁti hi

"Vishnu is the lord of all, the witness, the all-pervading bearer of every body; those who are his own, who move about the world bearing his very form —"

Verse 64 (padma.5.10.64)

ये स्मरंति महाविष्णुं सर्वभूतहृदि स्थितम् । ते मंतव्या महाविष्णु समरूपा रघूद्वह

ye smaraṁti mahāviṣṇuṁ sarvabhūtahṛdi sthitam te maṁtavyā mahāviṣṇu samarūpā raghūdvaha

"those who remember Mahavishnu, dwelling in the hearts of all beings — they, O upholder of the Raghu line, should be regarded as of the very form of Mahavishnu."

Verse 65 (padma.5.10.65)

यस्य स्वीयो न पारक्यो यस्य मित्रसमो रिपुः । ते वैष्णवाः क्षणादेव पापिनं पावयंति हि

yasya svīyo na pārakyo yasya mitrasamo ripuḥ te vaiṣṇavāḥ kṣaṇādeva pāpinaṁ pāvayaṁti hi

"Those for whom there is neither 'mine' nor 'another's,' for whom an enemy is like a friend — such Vaishnavas purify even a sinner in an instant."

Verse 66 (padma.5.10.66)

येषां प्रियं भागवतं येषां वै ब्राह्मणाः प्रियाः । वैकुंठात्प्रेषितास्तेऽत्र लोकपावनहेतवे

yeṣāṁ priyaṁ bhāgavataṁ yeṣāṁ vai brāhmaṇāḥ priyāḥ vaikuṁṭhātpreṣitāste'tra lokapāvanahetave

"Those to whom devotees of the Lord are dear, to whom brahmins are dear — they have been sent here from Vaikuntha for the purification of the world."

Verse 67 (padma.5.10.67)

येषां वक्त्रे हरेर्नाम हृदि विष्णुः सनातनः । उदरे विष्णुनैवेद्यः स श्वपाकोऽपि वैष्णवः

yeṣāṁ vaktre harernāma hṛdi viṣṇuḥ sanātanaḥ udare viṣṇunaivedyaḥ sa śvapāko'pi vaiṣṇavaḥ

"In whose mouth is Hari's name, in whose heart is the eternal Vishnu, in whose belly is only food offered to Vishnu — even an outcaste is a Vaishnava."

Verse 68 (padma.5.10.68)

येषां वेदाः प्रियतमा न च संसारजं सुखम् । स्वधर्मनिरता ये च तान्नमस्कुर्विहान्वितान्

yeṣāṁ vedāḥ priyatamā na ca saṁsārajaṁ sukham svadharmaniratā ye ca tānnamaskurvihānvitān

"Those to whom the Vedas are dearest, not the pleasure born of worldly existence, who are devoted to their own dharma — bow to them, together with their companions."

Verse 69 (padma.5.10.69)

शिवे विष्णौ न वा भेदो न च ब्रह्ममहेशयोः । तेषां पादरजः पूतं वहाम्यघविनाशनम्

śive viṣṇau na vā bhedo na ca brahmamaheśayoḥ teṣāṁ pādarajaḥ pūtaṁ vahāmyaghavināśanam

"There is no difference between Shiva and Vishnu, nor between Brahma and Maheshvara; the dust of their feet, I bear, purifying, destroyer of sin."

Verse 70 (padma.5.10.70)

गौरी गंगा महालक्ष्मीर्यस्य नास्ति पृथक्तया । ते मंतव्या नराः सर्वे स्वर्गलोकादिहागताः

gaurī gaṁgā mahālakṣmīryasya nāsti pṛthaktayā te maṁtavyā narāḥ sarve svargalokādihāgatāḥ

"Those for whom Gauri, Ganga, and Mahalakshmi are without difference — all such men should be regarded as having come here from the world of heaven."

Verse 71 (padma.5.10.71)

शरणागतरक्षी च मानदानपरायणः । यथाशक्ति हरेः प्रीत्यै स ज्ञेयो वैष्णवोत्तमः

śaraṇāgatarakṣī ca mānadānaparāyaṇaḥ yathāśakti hareḥ prītyai sa jñeyo vaiṣṇavottamaḥ

"One who protects those who take refuge in him, devoted to honor and giving, acting for Hari's pleasure to the best of his ability — he should be known as the finest of Vaishnavas."

Verse 72 (padma.5.10.72)

यस्य नाम महापापराशिं दहति सत्वरम् । तदीय चरणद्वंद्वे भक्तिर्यस्य स वैष्णवः

yasya nāma mahāpāparāśiṁ dahati satvaram tadīya caraṇadvaṁdve bhaktiryasya sa vaiṣṇavaḥ

"Whose very name swiftly burns away a mass of great sin, and who holds devotion to that one's pair of feet — he is a Vaishnava."

Verse 73 (padma.5.10.73)

इंद्रियाणि वशे येषां मनोऽपि हरिचिंतकम् । तान्नमस्कृत्य पूयात्सह्या जन्ममरणांतिकात्

iṁdriyāṇi vaśe yeṣāṁ mano'pi hariciṁtakam tānnamaskṛtya pūyātsahyā janmamaraṇāṁtikāt

"Those whose senses are controlled, whose mind too is fixed on Hari — bow to them, and be made fit to cross beyond birth and death."

Verse 74 (padma.5.10.74)

परस्त्रियं त्वं करवालवत्त्यजन्भवेर्यशोभूषणभूतिभूमिः । एवं ममादेशमथाचरंश्च लभेः परं धाम सुयोगमीड्यम्

parastriyaṁ tvaṁ karavālavattyajanbhaveryaśobhūṣaṇabhūtibhūmiḥ evaṁ mamādeśamathācaraṁśca labheḥ paraṁ dhāma suyogamīḍyam

"Shunning another's wife as you would a sword's edge, you shall become the very ground of glory, ornament, and prosperity; following my command thus, you shall attain that supreme, worthy, and beautiful abode."
