Then falling silent, that virtuous woman, thinking of him only as her husband, went out with him; and that faithful young woman went into the midst of the forest.

Verse 45 (padma.5.112.45)

She said, "Now it is midday; let the daily rites be performed." But the rakshasa, hearing this, said: "This is not the place for such observances."

yatra tatrāsti gaṁtavyamito gacchāvahe tataḥ kiṁcitpradeśaṁ gatvā tu guhāṁ vīkṣya sarastathā

"We must go on to wherever we must go from here." Having gone some further distance, and seeing a cave and a lake likewise—

Verse 47 (padma.5.112.47)

iha sthānaṁ hi me sthātuṁ kāryaṁ snānamatha priye ityuktvā sarasi snātvā phalāhāraṁ prakalpya ca

bhojanāvasare prāpte kalā dadhyāvumāṁ śivam ayaṁ dhavo mama na vā iti dhyānaparābhavat

—when the time for eating arrived, Kala meditated upon Uma and Shiva; she fell into meditation, wondering, "Is this indeed my husband, or not?"

Verse 49 (padma.5.112.49)

atha dhyānena taṁ coraṁ niścitya ca pativratā bhītātinamravadanā aśrupūrṇamukhī tadā

Then, through that meditation, having determined that this was a thief, that devoted wife, her face bowed low in fear, filled with tears—

Verse 50 (padma.5.112.50)

At that very evil death which had come upon her, Shaiva messengers arrived, wearing wondrous ornaments, bearing every weapon, auspicious.

Verse 56 (padma.5.112.56)

Kala said: "Grant me the state of your handmaiden; your lotus feet are dear to me — what use of many other things to ask for?" "So be it," said the auspicious goddess.

Verse 59 (padma.5.112.59)
