Chapter 112All chaptersChapter 114

Verse 1 (padma.5.113.1)

śrīrāma uvāca- khe dṛśyaṁte vimānasthā nānārūpadharāḥ śubhāḥ sarvakāmaphalopetāḥ subhāryyāḥ śatayoṣitaḥ

Shri Rama said: In the sky are seen those seated in celestial cars, of manifold auspicious forms, endowed with the fruit of every desire, with excellent wives, each attended by a hundred women.

Verse 2 (padma.5.113.2)

sahasranaranārībhiḥ pūjyamānāḥ pade pade gāyaṁti viṁśatiryoṣā rūpalāvaṇyakomalāḥ

Honored at every step by thousands of men and women; twenty women, soft with beauty and grace, sing—

Verse 3 (padma.5.113.3)

karaṁkavāhinī caikā cāmarāsaktabāhavaḥ tālavṛṁtadvayaṁ nāryyo vījayaṁti pragṛhya vai

—one bears a fan-basket; others, their arms occupied with yak-tail whisks; women hold and wave a pair of palm-leaf fans.

Verse 4 (padma.5.113.4)

sacakre cāṁkamadhye syā upadhānaṁ tathāparaḥ ekasyāḥ karayorhastaḥ stāvakānekasaṁyutaḥ

One is seated with a wheel-ornament in her lap, another serves as a pillow; the hand of one is joined with those of many eulogists reaching toward her.

Verse 5 (padma.5.113.5)

nānāvidhaparīhāsa kṛtotphullamukhāṁbujaḥ ekaikatra vimāne tu dṛśyate caṁdradīdhitiḥ

His lotus-face made to blossom by manifold jests; in each and every celestial car is seen one radiant as moonlight.

Verse 6 (padma.5.113.6)

strīśateṣu vimāneṣu dṛśyate īśvaraḥ śubhaḥ ete kiṁ puṇyakartāro viṣṇumāyāthavā mune

Amid hundreds of women in these cars, an auspicious lord is seen in each. Are these performers of merit, or is this Vishnu's own illusion, O sage?

Verse 7 (padma.5.113.7)

Shambhu said: These are indeed meritorious Brahmins, dwellers in the householder's stage of life, to whom that very food-dole was given by Dasharatha.

Verse 8 (padma.5.113.8)

teṣāṁ tu mamacittānāṁ kadācidabhavanmatiḥ yatheha sukhinaḥ sarve vayaṁ cānyopajīvinaḥ

But once, a thought arose in their minds: "How happy are we all here, though we live off another's support—"

Verse 9 (padma.5.113.9)

asmānevānujīvaṁti śataśo manujā iha yena puṇyena ca vayaṁ sarvekāmānumodinaḥ

"—hundreds of men here even live off us; by what merit are we all so delighted in every desire—"

Verse 10 (padma.5.113.10)

sustrīkṛtopacārāśca sarve rājyasukhānvitāḥ jarāmaraṇahīnāśca yuvānaḥ sarvadaiva hi

"—served by fine women, all endowed with the pleasures of kingship, free from old age and death, ever young forever?"

Verse 11 (padma.5.113.11)

vicāryaivaṁ dvijāḥ sarve vasiṣṭhasyāśramaṁ yayuḥ āgatānatha saṁpūjya vasiṣṭho vākyamuktavān

Thinking thus, all those Brahmins went to Vasishtha's hermitage. Having duly honored them upon their arrival, Vasishtha spoke this word.

Verse 12 (padma.5.113.12)

kimarthamāgatā yūyaṁ śīghraṁ brūta dvijottamāḥ dvijā ūcuḥ - vayamicchāmahe sarve sarvasaṁpatsamanvite

"For what reason have you come? Tell me quickly, O best of Brahmins." The Brahmins said: "We all wish—"

Verse 13 (padma.5.113.13)

vimāne kāmage roḍhuṁ tatsaṁpādaya no guro tatteṣāṁ ciṁtitaṁ śrutvā vasiṣṭho vākyamabravīt

"—to ride upon a celestial car, endowed with every prosperity, that moves at will; grant us that, O guru." Hearing that thought, Vasishtha spoke this word.

Verse 14 (padma.5.113.14)

purāṇaṁ sarvadā viprāḥ śrotavyaṁ pāpanāśanam dharmaścārthaśca kāmaśca mokṣastatraiva dṛśyate

"The Purana, O Brahmins, should always be heard; it destroys sin. Dharma, artha, kama, and moksha are all to be found there alone."

Verse 15 (padma.5.113.15)

tathetyuktvātha sunayaḥ purāṇakuśalaṁ munim jagmuraṁgirasaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ sarvaśāstraviśāradam

Saying "so be it," those men of good conduct went to the excellent sage Angiras, skilled in the Puranas, learned in every scripture.

Verse 16 (padma.5.113.16)

sarvāgamapurāṇajñaṁ sadā satkarmmacāriṇam idamūcurnamaskṛtya vayaṁ saphalajīvinaḥ

Knower of every Agama and Purana, ever engaged in good deeds; bowing to him, they said this: "We are now those whose lives have borne fruit."

Verse 17 (padma.5.113.17)

kṛtakṛtyā vayaṁ brahmansākṣāddṛṣṭo'si yanmune aṁgirā uvāca- yatkāryamāgatā yūyaṁ tatkāryaṁ karavāṇyaham

"We are accomplished, O Brahmin, since we have beheld you directly, O sage." Angiras said: "Whatever purpose you have come for, that I shall accomplish."

Verse 18 (padma.5.113.18)

purāṇaṁ śrotukāmāstu yūyamatra samāgatāḥ kīrtayiṣye vidhānaṁ vaḥ samastāghavināśanam

"You have come here desiring to hear the Purana; I shall declare to you the procedure, destroyer of every sin."

Verse 19 (padma.5.113.19)

sarvajñānapradaṁ devaṁ tatvavijñānasaṁbhavam śivabhaktipradaṁ hṛdyaṁ viṣṇubhaktipradaṁ śubham

Verse 20 (padma.5.113.20)

vicitrasvagatiprāpti jñānadaṁ ramaṇīpradam nānāvidhaśubhajñānaṁ ratitaṁtraprakāśakam

"It grants knowledge of one's wondrous destiny, and bestows delight; it grants manifold auspicious knowledge, and reveals the arts of love."

Verse 21 (padma.5.113.21)

bhuktimuktipradhānaṁ ca vidhidarśanadīpakam vicitrabhaktikathanaṁ bhaktisāhasakīrtanam

"It is chiefly a giver of enjoyment and liberation, a lamp revealing the proper rite; it narrates wondrous devotion, and celebrates the daring deeds of devotees."

Verse 22 (padma.5.113.22)

vratapratiṣṭhādānādi bhasmapūjāvidhipradram purāṇaṁ pādmamuditaṁ brahmapadmopanirvṛtam

"It teaches vows, consecration, giving, and the like, and the rite of worshipping ash. This Purana, called Padma, was proclaimed and made complete by Brahma on the lotus."

Verse 23 (padma.5.113.23)

maheśvareṇa kathitaṁ pramathākṛtivarṇanam etadanyatra kathitaṁ purāṇe pādma eva tu

"It was declared by Maheshvara, describing the forms of his Pramatha attendants. This has been told elsewhere; it belongs indeed to the Padma Purana alone."

Verse 24 (padma.5.113.24)

dilīpenapurāpṛṣṭovasiṣṭhaḥproktavānidam tacchṛṇudhvaṁ munivarā jñānaṁ sarvaṁ bhaviṣyati

"When formerly asked by Dilipa, Vasishtha declared this. Hear it, O excellent sages; all knowledge shall be yours."

Verse 25 (padma.5.113.25)

atha tadvacanādviprāḥ purāṇaśravaṇe ratāḥ kathaṁ śrotavyamadhunā kiṁ kṛtvetyabruvanmunim

Then, at that word, those Brahmins, devoted to hearing the Purana, said to the sage: "How should it now be heard? What is to be done?"

Verse 26 (padma.5.113.26)

so'pi sarvaṁ samācaṣṭa śṛṇu dharmaṁ sanātanam namaskṛtya purāṇajñaṁ dadyāccārghāsanaṁ tataḥ

He too told them all: "Hear the eternal dharma. Having bowed to the knower of the Purana, one should then give him arghya and a seat."

Verse 27 (padma.5.113.27)

niṣīda tatra cetyuktvā gaṁdhapuṣpaiḥ samarcayet ātmayogaṁ ca tāṁbūlamadhikaṁ vā samarpayet

"Saying, 'Be seated there,' one should worship him with sandal-paste and flowers; and one should offer betel joined with oneself, or in abundance."

Verse 28 (padma.5.113.28)

"One should say, 'Tell us, O Brahmin, the meritorious tale from the Puranas.' One should not, mounted upon a bedstead-seat, or even a high seat—"

Verse 29 (padma.5.113.29)

nīcāsano vai śṛṇuyāddharmmakāmārthasiddhaye śṛṇvityuktvā purāṇajña imaṁ maṁtramudīrayet

"—[listen]; one should listen from a lower seat, for the fulfillment of dharma, kama, and artha. Having said 'Let us listen,' the knower of the Purana should utter this mantra."

Verse 30 (padma.5.113.30)

namo hariṁharamatho gaṇeśaṁ bhāratīmataḥ iṣṭadevaṁ namaskṛtvā purāṇaṁ vaktumarhati

"Homage to Hari, to Hara, then to Ganesha, and to Bharati; having bowed to one's chosen deity, he is then fit to narrate the Purana."

Verse 31 (padma.5.113.31)

arddhayāmaṁ pratidinaṁ yadi vāpīcchayā bhavet evaṁ pāṭhasamāptiṁ ca śrutvā kṛtyaṁ samācaret

"For half a watch daily, or according to one's wish. Having thus heard to the completion of the recitation, one should perform the customary duties."

Verse 32 (padma.5.113.32)

śrotuśca tūṣṇīṁ mananaṁ tūṣṇīṁ śravaṇameva vā anyathā bhāratī kruddhyet tatkrodhānmūkatā bhavet

"The listener should reflect in silence, and listen in silence too; otherwise, Bharati becomes angered, and from that anger, dumbness results."

Verse 33 (padma.5.113.33)

tasmātpurāṇaśrotā ca tāṁbūlādisamarpaṇam vaktuśca jīvikākāryā svasāmarthyānusārataḥ

"Therefore the hearer of the Purana should offer betel and the like, and provide for the reciter's livelihood, according to his own means."

Verse 34 (padma.5.113.34)

"At the commencement of the Purana, a rising-gift together with clothing should be given; or one should offer fine cloth, a pair of garments."

Verse 35 (padma.5.113.35)

āsanaṁ tu mahaccitraṁ ramyamūrjasvalaṁ mṛdu suvarṇaṁ vā tathā dadyādgo bhū gehādikaṁ tathā

"A great, beautifully varied, lovely, sturdy, soft seat should be given; or gold; and likewise a cow, land, a house, and the like."

Verse 36 (padma.5.113.36)

etatsamastaṁ vipreṁdrā dakṣiṇāmūrtinā purā śaṁkareṇa munīnāṁ hi bhāṣitaṁ ca divaukasām

"All of this, O foremost of Brahmins, was formerly declared by Shankara, in his form as Dakshinamurti, to the sages and to the gods."

Verse 37 (padma.5.113.37)

atha te munayaḥ sarve taṁ praṇamyāsanasthitam pṛthakpṛthakca tāṁbūlaṁ datvā śuśrūṣavaḥ sthitāḥ

Then all those sages bowed to him, seated, and, each giving him betel separately, stood ready to listen.

Verse 38 (padma.5.113.38)

tenāpi kathitaṁ sarvaṁ purāṇaṁ sarvasaṁpradam upāṁtādhyāyaparyyaṁtaṁ śrutavaṁto dvijottamāḥ

He too then told them the entire Purana, giver of every prosperity; those best of Brahmins heard it up to the very penultimate chapter.

Verse 39 (padma.5.113.39)

dilīpa uvāca- kāmagena vimānena sarvasaṁpatsamṛddhinā sarvataḥ sukhayuktena puṇyasthānamupasthitam

Dilipa said: "By a wish-going celestial car, rich with every prosperity, replete with happiness on every side, one arrives at the meritorious place."

Verse 40 (padma.5.113.40)

Vasishtha said: "You have not asked enough, O king; there are still further degrees. That very merit which makes them so playful is now to be told."

Verse 41 (padma.5.113.41)

Verse 42 (padma.5.113.42)

Verse 43 (padma.5.113.43)

vaśinyau dve āvajikyau koṇikādhamane ubhe lāsikyastu catasraḥ syuḥ saṁtuṣṭaikātha gāyikā

Verse 44 (padma.5.113.44)

ekā dve vā sugītajñe'mukhare hi prakīrtite koṇavādyakṛte dve tu tūṣṇīṁbhūtāḥ ṣaḍaṣṭa vā

—one or two, skilled in excellent song yet not overly loud, are declared best; two produce the sound of the koṇa-instrument, while six or eight stay silent—

Verse 45 (padma.5.113.45)

sarvā rūpavilāsinyaḥ sarvāścāpatitastanāḥ ratitaṁtrādhikuśalāstata evāviśaṁkitāḥ

—all of beautiful, graceful form, all with firm, unfallen breasts; supremely skilled in the arts of love, and hence utterly free of hesitation.

Verse 46 (padma.5.113.46)

susūkṣmā vastraveṣāśca vidyuccaṁcaladṛṣṭayaḥ etādṛśībhiryoṣābhiryena nṛtyaṁ hi kāritam

Clad in the finest, most delicate garments, their glances flickering like lightning — that man by whom, through such women, dance was made to be performed—

Verse 47 (padma.5.113.47)

ekasmindivase rājanvatsarānsavimānagaḥ śatastrīvīkṣitamukho yuvā bahubhirarcitaḥ

—in a single day, O king, he enjoys years' worth of pleasure; riding a celestial car, his face gazed upon by a hundred women, ever youthful, honored by many—

Verse 48 (padma.5.113.48)

ānaṁdapoṣasaṁpūrṇaḥ krodherṣyādivivarjitaḥ paṁcagaṁdhaviliptāṁgaḥ sacaṁdrā hidalānanaḥ

—full of nourished bliss, devoid of anger, envy, and the like, his body anointed with the five fragrances, his face like the crescent moon.

Verse 49 (padma.5.113.49)

sūryopamastu yoṣāśca sarvāstā daśanānvitāḥ sadyovikasitāmodi pārijātakṛtasrajaḥ

He is like the sun; and all those women have gleaming teeth, adorned with garlands freshly made of fragrant parijata flowers.

Verse 50 (padma.5.113.50)

sarvā vikasitārohi raktasaṁdhikṛtasrajaḥ dhammille vakṣasi tathā bibhratyaḥ susmitādharāḥ

All of them, of blossoming grace, wearing garlands joined with red-hued flowers upon their braided hair and their breasts, their lips softly smiling—

Verse 51 (padma.5.113.51)

caratyetādṛśībhistu nṛtyagītānumoditaḥ evaṁ vimānago bhūtvā uṣitvā kālamakṣayam

—he moves about, delighted by such women's dance and song. Thus, having become a rider of a celestial car, dwelling there for an imperishable span—

Verse 52 (padma.5.113.52)

paścājjāyeta nṛpatirevaṁ kṛtvā punastathā rājyaṁ svargaphalaṁ bhuktvā śivabhakto bhaviṣyati

—he is afterward born a king; having thus lived again, and having enjoyed a kingdom, the very fruit of heaven, he becomes a devotee of Shiva.

Verse 53 (padma.5.113.53)

śaṁbhuruvāca- dilīpāya vasiṣṭhoktaṁ munīnāmaṁgirobravīt te tathā kṛtavaṁtaśca tauryyatrikamumāpateḥ

Shambhu said: What was declared by Vasishtha to Dilipa, Angiras told to those sages. And, having thus performed the triple offering to the Lord of Uma—

Verse 54 (padma.5.113.54)

śrutvā purāṇaṁ pādmaṁ ca samagraṁ sukhino bhavan ta ete brāhmaṇā rāma vimānavaramāsthitāḥ

—and having heard the entire Padma Purana, they became happy. These same Brahmins, O Rama, now abide upon that excellent celestial car—

Verse 55 (padma.5.113.55)

dṛśyaṁte khe ca sukhinaḥ sadā muditamānasāḥ etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ purāṇeṣu viniścitam

—seen in the sky, happy, their minds ever glad. All of this has been told to you, ascertained from the Puranas.

Verse 56 (padma.5.113.56)

itaḥ paraṁ ca kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi rāghava

What more, then, do you wish to hear, O Raghava?
