Verse 1 (padma.5.13.1)

शेष उवाच। इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य सुमदस्य तपोनिधेः । जगदुः कामसेनास्तं रंभाद्यप्सरसो मुदा

śeṣa uvāca iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya sumadasya taponidheḥ jagaduḥ kāmasenāstaṁ raṁbhādyapsaraso mudā

Shesha said: Hearing these words of Sumada, treasury of austerity, the apsarases of Kama's army, headed by Rambha, joyfully said to him —

Verse 2 (padma.5.13.2)

त्वत्तपोभिर्वयं कांत प्राप्ताः सर्ववरांगनाः । तासां यौवनसर्वस्वं भुंक्ष्व त्यज तपःफलम्

tvattapobhirvayaṁ kāṁta prāptāḥ sarvavarāṁganāḥ tāsāṁ yauvanasarvasvaṁ bhuṁkṣva tyaja tapaḥphalam

"By your austerities, beloved, we, the finest of all women, have been obtained; enjoy the full wealth of their youth, and set aside the fruit of your austerity."

Verse 3 (padma.5.13.3)

इयं घृताची सुभगा चंपकाभशरीरभृत् । कर्पूरगंधललितं भुनक्तु त्वन्मुखामृतम्

iyaṁ ghṛtācī subhagā caṁpakābhaśarīrabhṛt karpūragaṁdhalalitaṁ bhunaktu tvanmukhāmṛtam

"This one, Ghritachi, fortunate, her body radiant as a champaka flower — let her enjoy the nectar of your mouth, delightful with the fragrance of camphor."

Verse 4 (padma.5.13.4)

एतां महाभाग सुशोभिविभ्रमां । मनोहरांगीं घनपीनसत्कुचाम् । कांतोपभुंक्ष्वाशु निजोग्रपुण्यतः । प्राप्तां पुनस्त्वं त्यज दुःखजातम्

etāṁ mahābhāga suśobhivibhramāṁ manoharāṁgīṁ ghanapīnasatkucām kāṁtopabhuṁkṣvāśu nijograpuṇyataḥ prāptāṁ punastvaṁ tyaja duḥkhajātam

"This one, greatly fortunate one, of lovely, playful grace, her body enchanting, her fine breasts full and firm — enjoy her at once, obtained by your own great merit; now set aside this whole train of sorrows."

Verse 5 (padma.5.13.5)

मामप्यनर्घ्याभरणोपशोभितां । मंदारमालापरिशोभिवक्षसम् । नानारताख्यानविचारचंचुरां । दृढं यथा स्यात्परिरंभणं कुरु

māmapyanarghyābharaṇopaśobhitāṁ maṁdāramālāpariśobhivakṣasam nānāratākhyānavicāracaṁcurāṁ dṛḍhaṁ yathā syātpariraṁbhaṇaṁ kuru

"Me too, adorned with priceless ornaments, my breast graced with a garland of mandara flowers, skilled in discoursing on the many arts of love — embrace me firmly."

Verse 6 (padma.5.13.6)

पिबामृतं मामकवक्त्रनिर्गतं । विमानमारुह्य वरं मया सह । सुमेरुशृंगं बहुपुण्यसेवितं । संप्राप्य भोगं कुरु सत्तपः फलम्

pibāmṛtaṁ māmakavaktranirgataṁ vimānamāruhya varaṁ mayā saha sumeruśṛṁgaṁ bahupuṇyasevitaṁ saṁprāpya bhogaṁ kuru sattapaḥ phalam

"Drink the nectar that flows from my mouth; mounting the finest celestial chariot together with me, having reached the peak of Sumeru, served by the fruit of much merit, enjoy the true fruit of your austerity."

Verse 7 (padma.5.13.7)

तिलोत्तमा यौवनरूपशोभिता । गृह्णातु ते मूर्धनि तापवारणम् । सुचामरौ संततधारयांकितौ । गंगाप्रवाहाविव सुंदरोत्तम

tilottamā yauvanarūpaśobhitā gṛhṇātu te mūrdhani tāpavāraṇam sucāmarau saṁtatadhārayāṁkitau gaṁgāpravāhāviva suṁdarottama

"Let Tilottama, resplendent with youth and beauty, hold over your head a canopy against the heat, together with two fine chowries, ever waved, like twin streams of the Ganga, O finest of beauties."

Verse 8 (padma.5.13.8)

शृणुष्व भोः कामकथां मनोहरां । पिबामृतं देवगणादिवांछितम् । उद्यानमासाद्य च नंदनाभिधं । वरांगनाभिर्विहरं कुरु प्रभो

śṛṇuṣva bhoḥ kāmakathāṁ manoharāṁ pibāmṛtaṁ devagaṇādivāṁchitam udyānamāsādya ca naṁdanābhidhaṁ varāṁganābhirviharaṁ kuru prabho

"Listen, lord, to this lovely tale of love; drink the nectar desired even by hosts of gods; having reached the garden called Nandana, take your pleasure among the finest women."

Verse 9 (padma.5.13.9)

इत्युक्तमाकर्ण्य महामतिर्नृपो । विचारयामास कुतो ह्युपस्थिताः । मया सुसृष्टास्तपसा सुरांगनाः । प्रत्यूह एवात्र विधेयमेष किम्

ityuktamākarṇya mahāmatirnṛpo vicārayāmāsa kuto hyupasthitāḥ mayā susṛṣṭāstapasā surāṁganāḥ pratyūha evātra vidheyameṣa kim

Hearing this speech, the greatly wise king reflected: "From where have these celestial women, wrought by my own austerity, come before me? What obstacle here must now be dealt with?"

Verse 10 (padma.5.13.10)

इति चिंतातुरो राजा स्वांते संचिंतयन्सुधीः । जगाद मतिमान्वीरः सुमदो देवताङ्गनाः

iti ciṁtāturo rājā svāṁte saṁciṁtayansudhīḥ jagāda matimānvīraḥ sumado devatāṅganāḥ

Thus troubled in mind, reflecting within himself, that wise hero-king Sumada spoke to the celestial women —

Verse 11 (padma.5.13.11)

यूयं तु ममचित्तस्था जगन्मातृस्वरूपकाः । मया संचिंत्यते या हि सापि त्वद्रूपिणी मता

yūyaṁ tu mamacittasthā jaganmātṛsvarūpakāḥ mayā saṁciṁtyate yā hi sāpi tvadrūpiṇī matā

"You all dwell in my mind, in the very form of the mother of the universe; whomever I meditate upon, she too, I hold, takes your very form."

Verse 12 (padma.5.13.12)

इदं तुच्छं स्वर्गसुखं त्वयोक्तं सविकल्पकम् । मत्स्वामिनी मया भक्त्या सेविता दास्यते वरम्

idaṁ tucchaṁ svargasukhaṁ tvayoktaṁ savikalpakam matsvāminī mayā bhaktyā sevitā dāsyate varam

"This trifling, changeable heavenly pleasure you speak of — my own mistress, served by me with devotion, will grant me something far better."

Verse 13 (padma.5.13.13)

यत्कृपातो विधिः सत्यलोकं प्राप्तो महानभूत् । सा मे दास्यति सर्वं हि भक्तदुःखांतकारिणी

yatkṛpāto vidhiḥ satyalokaṁ prāpto mahānabhūt sā me dāsyati sarvaṁ hi bhaktaduḥkhāṁtakāriṇī

"By whose grace even great Brahma attained Satyaloka — she alone will give me everything, she who ends her devotees' sorrows."

Verse 14 (padma.5.13.14)

किं नंदनं किं तु गिरिः कनकेन सुमण्डितः । किं सुधा स्वल्पपुण्येन प्राप्या दानवदुःखदा

kiṁ naṁdanaṁ kiṁ tu giriḥ kanakena sumaṇḍitaḥ kiṁ sudhā svalpapuṇyena prāpyā dānavaduḥkhadā

"What is Nandana? What is a mountain adorned with gold? What is nectar, attainable by trifling merit, which brings only misery to the demons?"

Verse 15 (padma.5.13.15)

इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य कामस्तु विविधैः शरैः । प्राहरन्नरदेवस्य कर्तुं किंचिन्न वै प्रभुः

iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya kāmastu vividhaiḥ śaraiḥ prāharannaradevasya kartuṁ kiṁcinna vai prabhuḥ

Hearing these words, Kama the lord, though he struck him with arrows of every kind, was unable to do anything at all to that king.

Verse 16 (padma.5.13.16)

कटाक्षैर्नूपुरारावैः परिरंभैर्विलोकनैः । न तस्य चित्तं विभ्रांतं कर्तुं शक्ता वरांगनाः

kaṭākṣairnūpurārāvaiḥ pariraṁbhairvilokanaiḥ na tasya cittaṁ vibhrāṁtaṁ kartuṁ śaktā varāṁganāḥ

With sidelong glances, the jingling of anklets, embraces, and glances, the finest women were unable to disturb his mind in the least.

Verse 17 (padma.5.13.17)

गत्वा यथागतं शक्रं जगदुर्धीरधीर्नृपः । तच्छ्रुत्वा मघवा भीतः सेवामारभतात्मनः

gatvā yathāgataṁ śakraṁ jagadurdhīradhīrnṛpaḥ tacchrutvā maghavā bhītaḥ sevāmārabhatātmanaḥ

Going back just as they had come, they reported this to Indra; hearing it, Indra, fearful, began to worship him himself.

Verse 18 (padma.5.13.18)

अथ निश्चितमालोक्य पादपद्मे स्वकेंऽबिका । जितेंद्रियं महाराजं प्रत्यक्षाभूत्सुतोषिता

atha niścitamālokya pādapadme svakeṁ'bikā jiteṁdriyaṁ mahārājaṁ pratyakṣābhūtsutoṣitā

Then, seeing his firm resolve fixed at her own lotus feet, the Mother, well pleased, appeared before that great king, his senses conquered —

Verse 19 (padma.5.13.19)

पंचास्यपृष्ठललिता पाशांकुशधरावरा । धनुर्बाणधरा माता जगत्पावनपावनी

paṁcāsyapṛṣṭhalalitā pāśāṁkuśadharāvarā dhanurbāṇadharā mātā jagatpāvanapāvanī

five-faced, graceful, seated upon her mount, bearing the noose and the goad, the finest, bow and arrow in hand, the mother, purifier of the world's purifiers.

Verse 20 (padma.5.13.20)

तां वीक्ष्य मातरं धीमान्सूर्यकोटिसमप्रभाम् । धनुर्बाणसृणीपाशान्दधानां हर्षमाप्तवान्

tāṁ vīkṣya mātaraṁ dhīmānsūryakoṭisamaprabhām dhanurbāṇasṛṇīpāśāndadhānāṁ harṣamāptavān

Seeing that mother, radiant as a million suns, bearing bow, arrows, goad, and noose, the wise one was filled with joy.

Verse 21 (padma.5.13.21)

शिरसा बहुशो नत्वा मातरं भक्तिभाविताम् । हसंतीं निजदेहेषु स्पृशंतीं पाणिना मुहुः

śirasā bahuśo natvā mātaraṁ bhaktibhāvitām hasaṁtīṁ nijadeheṣu spṛśaṁtīṁ pāṇinā muhuḥ

Bowing his head again and again to that mother, filled with devotion, who smiled and repeatedly touched his body with her hand —

Verse 22 (padma.5.13.22)

तुष्टाव भक्त्युत्कलितचित्तवृत्तिर्महामतिः । गद्गदस्वरसंयुक्तः कंटकांगोपशोभितः

tuṣṭāva bhaktyutkalitacittavṛttirmahāmatiḥ gadgadasvarasaṁyuktaḥ kaṁṭakāṁgopaśobhitaḥ

that man of great wisdom, his heart overflowing with devotion, his voice choked with feeling, his body bristling with delight, praised her —

Verse 23 (padma.5.13.23)

जय देवि महादेवि भक्तवृंदैकसेविते । ब्रह्मरुद्रादिदेवेंद्र सेवितांघ्रियुगेऽनघे

jaya devi mahādevi bhaktavṛṁdaikasevite brahmarudrādideveṁdra sevitāṁghriyuge'naghe

"Victory, O Goddess, great Goddess, served solely by throngs of devotees! O sinless one, whose pair of feet is served by Brahma, Rudra, Indra, and the other gods!"

Verse 24 (padma.5.13.24)

मातस्तव कलाविद्धमेतद्भाति चराचरम् । त्वदृते नास्ति सर्वं तन्मातर्भद्रे नमोस्तु ते

mātastava kalāviddhametadbhāti carācaram tvadṛte nāsti sarvaṁ tanmātarbhadre namostu te

"Mother, by your very fragment this whole moving and unmoving world shines forth; without you there is nothing at all — O blessed mother, salutation to you!"

Verse 25 (padma.5.13.25)

मही त्वयाऽधारशक्त्या स्थापिता चलतीह न । सपर्वतवनोद्यान दिग्गजैरुपशोभिता

mahī tvayā'dhāraśaktyā sthāpitā calatīha na saparvatavanodyāna diggajairupaśobhitā

"The earth, adorned with mountains, forests, gardens, and the elephants of the directions, is established by your sustaining power and does not move here."

Verse 26 (padma.5.13.26)

सूर्यस्तपति खे तीक्ष्णैरंशुभिः प्रतपन्महीम् । त्वच्छक्त्या वसुधासंस्थं रसं गृह्णन्विमुंचति

sūryastapati khe tīkṣṇairaṁśubhiḥ pratapanmahīm tvacchaktyā vasudhāsaṁsthaṁ rasaṁ gṛhṇanvimuṁcati

"The sun burns in the sky with its sharp rays, scorching the earth; by your power alone it draws up the sap held within the earth, and releases it again."

Verse 27 (padma.5.13.27)

अंतर्बहिः स्थितो वह्निर्लोकानां प्रकरोतु शम् । त्वत्प्रतापान्महादेवि सुरासुरनमस्कृते

aṁtarbahiḥ sthito vahnirlokānāṁ prakarotu śam tvatpratāpānmahādevi surāsuranamaskṛte

"The fire, dwelling within and without, brings peace to the worlds by your very majesty, O great Goddess, worshipped by gods and demons."

Verse 28 (padma.5.13.28)

त्वं विद्या त्वं महामाया विष्णोर्लोकैकपालिनः । स्वशक्त्या सृजसीदं त्वं पालयस्यपि मोहिनि

tvaṁ vidyā tvaṁ mahāmāyā viṣṇorlokaikapālinaḥ svaśaktyā sṛjasīdaṁ tvaṁ pālayasyapi mohini

"You are Vidya, you are the great Maya of Vishnu, sole protector of the worlds; by your own power you create this world, and sustain it too, O enchantress."

Verse 29 (padma.5.13.29)

त्वत्तः सर्वे सुराः प्राप्य सिद्धिं सुखमयंति वै । मां पालय कृपानाथे वंदिते भक्तवल्लभे

tvattaḥ sarve surāḥ prāpya siddhiṁ sukhamayaṁti vai māṁ pālaya kṛpānāthe vaṁdite bhaktavallabhe

"From you all the gods, having attained success, find happiness; protect me, O compassionate mistress, worshipped one, beloved of your devotees."

Verse 30 (padma.5.13.30)

रक्ष मां सेवकं मातस्त्वदीयचरणारणम् । कुरु मे वांछितां सिद्धिं महापुरुषपूर्वजे

rakṣa māṁ sevakaṁ mātastvadīyacaraṇāraṇam kuru me vāṁchitāṁ siddhiṁ mahāpuruṣapūrvaje

"Protect me, your servant, mother, who has taken refuge in your feet; grant me the success I desire, O ancestress of the great."

Verse 31 (padma.5.13.31)

सुमतिरुवाच। एवं तुष्टा जगन्माता वृणीष्व वरमुत्तमम् । उवाच भक्तं सुमदं तपसा कृशदेहिनम्

sumatiruvāca evaṁ tuṣṭā jaganmātā vṛṇīṣva varamuttamam uvāca bhaktaṁ sumadaṁ tapasā kṛśadehinam

Sumati said: Thus pleased, the mother of the universe said to her devotee Sumada, his body wasted by austerity: "Choose the finest boon."

Verse 32 (padma.5.13.32)

इत्येतद्वाक्यमाकर्ण्य प्रहृष्टः सुमदो नृपः । वव्रे निजं हृतं राज्यं हतदुर्जनकंटकम्

ityetadvākyamākarṇya prahṛṣṭaḥ sumado nṛpaḥ vavre nijaṁ hṛtaṁ rājyaṁ hatadurjanakaṁṭakam

Hearing this speech, King Sumada, overjoyed, chose the recovery of his own stolen kingdom, freed of the thorn of the wicked,

Verse 33 (padma.5.13.33)

महेशीचरणद्वंद्वे भक्तिमव्यभिचारिणीम् । प्रांते मुक्तिं तु संसारवारिधेस्तारिणीं पुनः

maheśīcaraṇadvaṁdve bhaktimavyabhicāriṇīm prāṁte muktiṁ tu saṁsāravāridhestāriṇīṁ punaḥ

unwavering devotion to the great Goddess's pair of feet, and, at the end, liberation once more — the crossing of the ocean of samsara.

Verse 34 (padma.5.13.34)

कामाक्षोवाच। राज्यं प्राप्नुहि सुमद सर्वत्रहतकंटकम् । महिलारत्नसंजुष्टपादपद्मद्वयो भव

kāmākṣovāca rājyaṁ prāpnuhi sumada sarvatrahatakaṁṭakam mahilāratnasaṁjuṣṭapādapadmadvayo bhava

Kamakshi said: "Obtain, Sumada, your kingdom, its every thorn destroyed everywhere; become one whose pair of lotus feet is attended by the finest of wives."

Verse 35 (padma.5.13.35)

ततवैरिपराभूतिर्माभूयात्सुमदाभिध । यदा तु रावणं हत्वा रघुनाथो महायशाः

tatavairiparābhūtirmābhūyātsumadābhidha yadā tu rāvaṇaṁ hatvā raghunātho mahāyaśāḥ

"May no defeat by an enemy ever befall you, O one named Sumada. When Raghunatha, of great fame, having slain Ravana,"

Verse 36 (padma.5.13.36)

करिष्यत्यश्वमेधं हि सर्वसंभारशोभितम् । तस्य भ्राता महावीरः शत्रुघ्नः परवीरहा

kariṣyatyaśvamedhaṁ hi sarvasaṁbhāraśobhitam tasya bhrātā mahāvīraḥ śatrughnaḥ paravīrahā

"performs the horse-sacrifice, resplendent with every provision, his brother, the great hero Shatrughna, slayer of enemy heroes,"

Verse 37 (padma.5.13.37)

पालयन्हयमायास्यत्यत्र वीरादिभिर्वृतः । तस्मै सर्वं समर्प्य त्वं राज्यमृद्धं धनादिकम्

pālayanhayamāyāsyatyatra vīrādibhirvṛtaḥ tasmai sarvaṁ samarpya tvaṁ rājyamṛddhaṁ dhanādikam

"guarding the horse, will come here, surrounded by heroes; having offered him this prosperous kingdom, wealth, and everything —"

Verse 38 (padma.5.13.38)

पालयिष्यसि योधैः स्वैर्धनुर्धारिभिरुद्भटैः । ततः पृथिव्यां सर्वत्र भ्रमिष्यसि महामते

pālayiṣyasi yodhaiḥ svairdhanurdhāribhirudbhaṭaiḥ tataḥ pṛthivyāṁ sarvatra bhramiṣyasi mahāmate

"you shall then protect your realm with your own mighty bow-bearing warriors; then, O greatly wise one, you shall roam over the whole earth."

Verse 39 (padma.5.13.39)

ततो रामं नमस्कृत्य ब्रह्मेंद्रेशादिसेवितम् । मुक्तिं प्राप्स्यसि दुष्प्रापां योगिभिर्यमसाधनैः

tato rāmaṁ namaskṛtya brahmeṁdreśādisevitam muktiṁ prāpsyasi duṣprāpāṁ yogibhiryamasādhanaiḥ

"Then, having bowed to Rama, served by Brahma, Indra, and the other lords, you shall attain that liberation, hard to attain even by yogis through the disciplines of Yama."

Verse 40 (padma.5.13.40)

तावत्कालमिहस्थास्ये यावद्रामहयागमः । पश्चात्त्वां तु समुद्धृत्य गंतास्मि परमं पदम्

tāvatkālamihasthāsye yāvadrāmahayāgamaḥ paścāttvāṁ tu samuddhṛtya gaṁtāsmi paramaṁ padam

"I shall remain here so long as Rama's sacrificial horse has not yet come; afterward, having lifted you up, I shall go to the supreme abode."

Verse 41 (padma.5.13.41)

इत्युक्त्वांतर्दधे देवी सुरासुरनमस्कृता । सुमदोऽप्यहिच्छत्रायां शत्रून्हत्वा नृपोऽभवत्

ityuktvāṁtardadhe devī surāsuranamaskṛtā sumado'pyahicchatrāyāṁ śatrūnhatvā nṛpo'bhavat

Having said this, the goddess, worshipped by gods and demons, vanished. Sumada too, having slain his enemies, became king again in Ahicchatra.

Verse 42 (padma.5.13.42)

एष राजा समर्थोऽपि बलवाहनसंयुतः । न ग्रहीष्यति ते वाहं महामायासुशिक्षितः

eṣa rājā samartho'pi balavāhanasaṁyutaḥ na grahīṣyati te vāhaṁ mahāmāyāsuśikṣitaḥ

"This king, though capable, complete with army and mounts, well-instructed by the great Maya, will not seize your horse."

Verse 43 (padma.5.13.43)

श्रुत्वा प्राप्तं पुरी पार्श्वे हयमेधहयोत्तमम् । त्वां च सर्वैर्महाराजैः सेवितांघ्रिं महामतिम्

śrutvā prāptaṁ purī pārśve hayamedhahayottamam tvāṁ ca sarvairmahārājaiḥ sevitāṁghriṁ mahāmatim

"Hearing that the finest horse of the horse-sacrifice has reached near his city, and that you too, greatly wise one, whose feet are served by all the great kings, have come —"

Verse 44 (padma.5.13.44)

सर्वं दास्यति सर्वज्ञ राजा सुमदनामधृक् । अधुनातन्महाराज रामचंद्र प्रतापतः

sarvaṁ dāsyati sarvajña rājā sumadanāmadhṛk adhunātanmahārāja rāmacaṁdra pratāpataḥ

"the king named Sumada, all-knowing, will now, great king, offer up everything, by the very majesty of Ramachandra."

Verse 45 (padma.5.13.45)

शेष उवाच। इति वृत्तं समाकर्ण्य सुमदस्य महायशाः । साधुसाध्विति चोवाच जहर्ष मतिमान्बली

śeṣa uvāca iti vṛttaṁ samākarṇya sumadasya mahāyaśāḥ sādhusādhviti covāca jaharṣa matimānbalī

Shesha said: Hearing this account of Sumada of great fame, that wise, mighty Shatrughna rejoiced and said, "Well done, well done!"

Verse 46 (padma.5.13.46)

अहिच्छत्रापतिः सर्वैः स्वगणैः परिवारितः । सभायां सुखमास्ते यो बहुराजन्यसेवितः

ahicchatrāpatiḥ sarvaiḥ svagaṇaiḥ parivāritaḥ sabhāyāṁ sukhamāste yo bahurājanyasevitaḥ

The lord of Ahicchatra sat, surrounded by all his own retinue, served by many princes, happily in his assembly.

Verse 47 (padma.5.13.47)

ब्राह्मणा वेदविदुषो वैश्या धनसमृद्धयः । राजानं पर्युपासंते सुमदंशो भयान्वितम्

brāhmaṇā vedaviduṣo vaiśyā dhanasamṛddhayaḥ rājānaṁ paryupāsaṁte sumadaṁśo bhayānvitam

Brahmins learned in the Vedas, and vaishyas rich in wealth, waited attentively upon that king, portion of Sumada, filled with reverent awe.

Verse 48 (padma.5.13.48)

वेदविद्याविनोदेन न्यायिनो ब्राह्मणा वराः । आशीर्वदंति तं भूपं सर्वलोकैकरक्षकम्

vedavidyāvinodena nyāyino brāhmaṇā varāḥ āśīrvadaṁti taṁ bhūpaṁ sarvalokaikarakṣakam

The finest brahmins, just in conduct, delighting in the discourse of Vedic learning, blessed that king, sole protector of all his people.

Verse 49 (padma.5.13.49)

एतस्मिन्समये कश्चिदागत्य नृपतिं जगौ । स्वामिन्न जाने कस्यास्ति हयः पत्रधरोंऽतिके

etasminsamaye kaścidāgatya nṛpatiṁ jagau svāminna jāne kasyāsti hayaḥ patradharoṁ'tike

At this time someone came and said to the king: "My lord, I do not know whose horse this is, bearing a document, nearby."

Verse 50 (padma.5.13.50)

तच्छ्रुत्वा सेवकं श्रेष्ठं प्रेषयामास सत्वरः । जानीहि कस्य राज्ञोऽयमश्वो मम पुरांतिके

tacchrutvā sevakaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ preṣayāmāsa satvaraḥ jānīhi kasya rājño'yamaśvo mama purāṁtike

Hearing this, he quickly sent his finest servant: "Find out whose king's horse this is, near my city."

Verse 51 (padma.5.13.51)

गत्वाथ सेवकस्तत्र ज्ञात्वा वृत्तांतमादितः । निवेदयामास नृपं महाराजन्यसेवितम्

gatvātha sevakastatra jñātvā vṛttāṁtamāditaḥ nivedayāmāsa nṛpaṁ mahārājanyasevitam

The servant, going there and learning the account from the start, reported it to the king, served by great princes.

Verse 52 (padma.5.13.52)

स श्रुत्वा रघुनाथस्य हयं नित्यमनुस्मरन् । आज्ञापयामास जनं सर्वं राजाविशारदः

sa śrutvā raghunāthasya hayaṁ nityamanusmaran ājñāpayāmāsa janaṁ sarvaṁ rājāviśāradaḥ

Hearing this, and ever mindful of Raghunatha, that king, most skilled in kingship, commanded all his people:

Verse 53 (padma.5.13.53)

लोका मदीयाः सर्वे ये धनधान्यसमाकुलाः । तोरणादीनि गेहेषु मंगलानि सृजंत्विह

lokā madīyāḥ sarve ye dhanadhānyasamākulāḥ toraṇādīni geheṣu maṁgalāni sṛjaṁtviha

"Let all my people, rich in wealth and grain, set up festive arches and other auspicious signs in their homes here."

Verse 54 (padma.5.13.54)

कन्याः सहस्रशो रम्याः सर्वाभरणभूषिताः । गजोपरिसमारूढा यांतु शत्रुघ्नसंमुखम्

kanyāḥ sahasraśo ramyāḥ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ gajoparisamārūḍhā yāṁtu śatrughnasaṁmukham

"Let thousands of lovely maidens, adorned with every ornament, mounted upon elephants, go to meet Shatrughna."

Verse 55 (padma.5.13.55)

इत्यादिसर्वमाज्ञाप्य ययौ राजा स्वयं ततः । पुत्रपौत्रमहिष्यादिपरिवारसमावृतः

ityādisarvamājñāpya yayau rājā svayaṁ tataḥ putrapautramahiṣyādiparivārasamāvṛtaḥ

Having given all these commands, the king himself then went forth, surrounded by his retinue of sons, grandsons, queens, and the rest.

Verse 56 (padma.5.13.56)

शत्रुघ्नः सुमहामात्यैः सुभटैः पुष्कलादिभिः । संयुतो भूपतिं वीरं ददर्श सुमदाभिधम्

śatrughnaḥ sumahāmātyaiḥ subhaṭaiḥ puṣkalādibhiḥ saṁyuto bhūpatiṁ vīraṁ dadarśa sumadābhidham

Shatrughna, together with his great ministers and fine warriors, Pushkala and the rest, beheld that heroic king named Sumada,

Verse 57 (padma.5.13.57)

हस्तिभिः सादिसंयुक्तैः पत्तिभिः परतापनैः । वाजिभिर्भूषितैर्वीरैः संयुतं वीरशोभितम्

hastibhiḥ sādisaṁyuktaiḥ pattibhiḥ paratāpanaiḥ vājibhirbhūṣitairvīraiḥ saṁyutaṁ vīraśobhitam

accompanied by elephants with their riders, by foot-soldiers who scorch the enemy, and by heroes upon decorated horses, resplendent with valor.

Verse 58 (padma.5.13.58)

अथागत्य महाराजः शत्रुघ्नं नतवान्मुदा । धन्योऽस्मि कृतकृत्योऽस्मि सत्कृतं च कृतं वपुः

athāgatya mahārājaḥ śatrughnaṁ natavānmudā dhanyo'smi kṛtakṛtyo'smi satkṛtaṁ ca kṛtaṁ vapuḥ

Then, coming forward, the great king bowed joyfully to Shatrughna: "I am blessed, my purpose is accomplished, my body has been well honored indeed."

Verse 59 (padma.5.13.59)

इदं राज्यं गृहाणाशु महाराजोपशोभितम् । महामाणिक्यमुक्तादि महाधनसुपूरितम्

idaṁ rājyaṁ gṛhāṇāśu mahārājopaśobhitam mahāmāṇikyamuktādi mahādhanasupūritam

"Take at once this kingdom, adorned by its great king, filled with great wealth — rubies, pearls, and the rest."

Verse 60 (padma.5.13.60)

स्वामिंश्चिरं प्रतीक्षेऽहं हयस्यागमनं प्रति । कामाक्षाकथितं पूर्वं जातं संप्रति तत्तथा

svāmiṁściraṁ pratīkṣe'haṁ hayasyāgamanaṁ prati kāmākṣākathitaṁ pūrvaṁ jātaṁ saṁprati tattathā

"My lord, I have long awaited the horse's coming; what Kamakshi foretold long ago has now truly come to pass."

Verse 61 (padma.5.13.61)

विलोकय पुरं मह्यं कृतार्थान्कुरु मानवान् । पावयास्मत्कुलं सर्वं रामानुज महीपते

vilokaya puraṁ mahyaṁ kṛtārthānkuru mānavān pāvayāsmatkulaṁ sarvaṁ rāmānuja mahīpate

"Behold my city, make its people fulfilled in their purpose; purify our entire lineage, O king, younger brother of Rama."

Verse 62 (padma.5.13.62)

इत्युक्त्वारोहयामास कुंजरं चंद्रसुप्रभम् । पुष्कलं च महावीरं तथा स्वयमथारुहत्

ityuktvārohayāmāsa kuṁjaraṁ caṁdrasuprabham puṣkalaṁ ca mahāvīraṁ tathā svayamathāruhat

Having said this, he had him mount an elephant, radiant as the moon, mounted the great hero Pushkala as well, and then mounted himself.

Verse 63 (padma.5.13.63)

भेरीपणवतूर्याणां वीणादीनां स्वनस्तदा । व्याप्नोति स्म महाराज सुमदेन प्रणोदितः

bherīpaṇavatūryāṇāṁ vīṇādīnāṁ svanastadā vyāpnoti sma mahārāja sumadena praṇoditaḥ

The sound of kettledrums, drums, trumpets, and vinas, sent forth by Sumada, then filled the air, great king.

Verse 64 (padma.5.13.64)

कन्याः समागत्य महानरेंद्रं -। शत्रुघ्नमिंद्रादिकसेवितांघ्रिम् । करिस्थिता मौक्तिकवृंदसंघै-। र्वर्धापयामासुरिनप्रयुक्ताः

kanyāḥ samāgatya mahānareṁdraṁ - śatrughnamiṁdrādikasevitāṁghrim karisthitā mauktikavṛṁdasaṁghai- rvardhāpayāmāsurinaprayuktāḥ

Maidens, mounted on elephants and sent by the king, coming together, performed the ceremony of blessing with masses of pearls for that great lord of men, Shatrughna, whose feet are served by Indra and the other gods.

Verse 65 (padma.5.13.65)

शनैःशनैः समागत्य पुरीमध्ये जनैर्मुदा । वर्धापितो गृहं प्राप तोरणादिकभूषितम्

śanaiḥśanaiḥ samāgatya purīmadhye janairmudā vardhāpito gṛhaṁ prāpa toraṇādikabhūṣitam

Slowly, coming into the midst of the city, blessed joyfully by the people, he reached the palace, adorned with festive arches and the rest.

Verse 66 (padma.5.13.66)

हयरत्नेन संयुक्तस्तथा वीरैः सुशोभितः । राज्ञा पुरस्कृतो राजा शत्रुघ्नः प्राप मंदिरम्

hayaratnena saṁyuktastathā vīraiḥ suśobhitaḥ rājñā puraskṛto rājā śatrughnaḥ prāpa maṁdiram

Together with the jewel of horses, resplendent with his heroes, honorably escorted by the king, King Shatrughna reached the palace.

Verse 67 (padma.5.13.67)

अर्घादिभिः पूजयित्वा रघुनाथानुजं तदा । सर्वं समर्पयामास रामचंद्राय धीमते

arghādibhiḥ pūjayitvā raghunāthānujaṁ tadā sarvaṁ samarpayāmāsa rāmacaṁdrāya dhīmate

Having worshipped Raghunatha's younger brother with welcome-offerings and the rest, he then offered up everything to wise Ramachandra.
