Verse 1 (padma.5.14.1)

शेष उवाच। अथ स्वागतसंतुष्टं शत्रुघ्नं प्राह भूमिपः । रघुनाथकथां श्रेष्ठां शुश्रूषुः पुरुषर्षभः

śeṣa uvāca atha svāgatasaṁtuṣṭaṁ śatrughnaṁ prāha bhūmipaḥ raghunāthakathāṁ śreṣṭhāṁ śuśrūṣuḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ

Shesha said: Then the king, delighted at Shatrughna's welcome, that bull among men, desirous of hearing the finest story of Raghunatha, said —

Verse 2 (padma.5.14.2)

सुमद उवाच। कच्चिदास्ते सुखं रामः सर्वलोकशिरोमणिः । भक्तरक्षावतारोऽयं ममानुग्रहकारकः

sumada uvāca kaccidāste sukhaṁ rāmaḥ sarvalokaśiromaṇiḥ bhaktarakṣāvatāro'yaṁ mamānugrahakārakaḥ

Sumada said: "Is Rama, crest-jewel of all the worlds, well and happy? This incarnation, protector of his devotees, has shown me such grace."

Verse 3 (padma.5.14.3)

धन्या लोका इमे पुर्यां रघुनाथमुखांबुजम् । ये पिबंत्यनिशं चाक्षिपुटकैः परिमोदिताः

dhanyā lokā ime puryāṁ raghunāthamukhāṁbujam ye pibaṁtyaniśaṁ cākṣipuṭakaiḥ parimoditāḥ

"Blessed indeed are the people of that city who ceaselessly drink in, delighted, Raghunatha's lotus-face with the cups of their eyes."

Verse 4 (padma.5.14.4)

अर्थजातं मदीयं च नितरां पुरुषर्षभ । कृतार्थं कुलभूम्यादि वस्तुजातं महामते

arthajātaṁ madīyaṁ ca nitarāṁ puruṣarṣabha kṛtārthaṁ kulabhūmyādi vastujātaṁ mahāmate

"My whole wealth, O bull among men, and my ancestral land and all my possessions, O greatly wise one, have become truly fulfilled."

Verse 5 (padma.5.14.5)

कामाक्षया प्रसादो मे कृतः पूर्वं दयार्द्रया । रघुनाथमुखांभोजं द्रक्ष्येद्य सकुटुंबकः

kāmākṣayā prasādo me kṛtaḥ pūrvaṁ dayārdrayā raghunāthamukhāṁbhojaṁ drakṣyedya sakuṭuṁbakaḥ

"By Kamakshi's grace, granted to me long ago out of her compassion, I shall today, together with my family, behold Raghunatha's lotus-face."

Verse 6 (padma.5.14.6)

इत्युक्तवति वीरे तु सुमदे पार्थिवोत्तमे । सर्वं तत्कथयामास रघुनाथगुणोदयम्

ityuktavati vīre tu sumade pārthivottame sarvaṁ tatkathayāmāsa raghunāthaguṇodayam

When the hero, that finest of kings, Sumada, had spoken thus, he told him the complete rise of Raghunatha's virtues.

Verse 7 (padma.5.14.7)

त्रिरात्रं तत्र संस्थित्य रघुनाथानुजः परम् । गंतुं चकार धिषणां राज्ञा सह महामतिः

trirātraṁ tatra saṁsthitya raghunāthānujaḥ param gaṁtuṁ cakāra dhiṣaṇāṁ rājñā saha mahāmatiḥ

Having stayed there three nights, Raghunatha's greatly wise brother resolved to depart further, together with the king.

Verse 8 (padma.5.14.8)

तज्ज्ञात्वा सुमदः शीघ्रं पुत्रं राज्येऽभ्यषेचयत् । शत्रुघ्नेन महाराज्ञा पुष्कलेनानुमोदितः

tajjñātvā sumadaḥ śīghraṁ putraṁ rājye'bhyaṣecayat śatrughnena mahārājñā puṣkalenānumoditaḥ

Learning of this, Sumada quickly consecrated his son in the kingdom, with the approval of great King Shatrughna and of Pushkala.

Verse 9 (padma.5.14.9)

वासांसि बहुरत्नानि धनानि विविधानि च । शत्रुघ्नसेवकेभ्योऽसौ प्रादात्तत्र महामतिः

vāsāṁsi bahuratnāni dhanāni vividhāni ca śatrughnasevakebhyo'sau prādāttatra mahāmatiḥ

That wise one gave garments, many jewels, and various riches to Shatrughna's attendants there.

Verse 10 (padma.5.14.10)

ततो गमनमारेभे मंत्रिभिर्बहुवित्तमैः । पत्तिभिर्वाजिभिर्नागैः सदश्वैरथ कोटिभिः

tato gamanamārebhe maṁtribhirbahuvittamaiḥ pattibhirvājibhirnāgaiḥ sadaśvairatha koṭibhiḥ

Then he set out on his journey, together with ministers of great wealth, foot-soldiers, horses, elephants, and fine steeds by the millions.

Verse 11 (padma.5.14.11)

शत्रुघ्नः सहितस्तेन सुमदेन धनुर्भृता । जगाम मार्गे विहसन्रघुनाथप्रतापभृत्

śatrughnaḥ sahitastena sumadena dhanurbhṛtā jagāma mārge vihasanraghunāthapratāpabhṛt

Shatrughna, together with that bow-bearing Sumada, went along the road, laughing, bearing Raghunatha's own majesty.

Verse 12 (padma.5.14.12)

पयोष्णीतीरमासाद्य जगाम स हयोत्तमः । पृष्ठतोऽनुययुः सर्वे योधा वै हयरक्षिणः

payoṣṇītīramāsādya jagāma sa hayottamaḥ pṛṣṭhato'nuyayuḥ sarve yodhā vai hayarakṣiṇaḥ

Reaching the bank of the Payoshni river, that finest of horses went on; all the warrior-guardians of the horse followed behind.

Verse 13 (padma.5.14.13)

आश्रमान्विविधान्पश्यन्नृषीणां सुतपोभृताम् । तत्रतत्र विशृण्वानो रघुनाथगुणोदयम्

āśramānvividhānpaśyannṛṣīṇāṁ sutapobhṛtām tatratatra viśṛṇvāno raghunāthaguṇodayam

Beholding the various hermitages of sages given to fine austerity, hearing everywhere the rising fame of Raghunatha's virtues —

Verse 14 (padma.5.14.14)

एष धीमान्हरिर्याति हरिणा परिरक्षितः । हरिभिर्हरिभक्तैश्च हरिवर्यानुगैर्मुहुः

eṣa dhīmānhariryāti hariṇā parirakṣitaḥ haribhirharibhaktaiśca harivaryānugairmuhuḥ

"This wise Hari goes, protected by Hari, by the monkeys, by Hari's devotees, and by the followers of the finest of the Haris, again and again" —

Verse 15 (padma.5.14.15)

इति शृण्वञ्छुभा वाचो मुनीनां परितः प्रभुः । तुतोष भक्त्युत्कलितचित्तवृत्तिभृतां महान्

iti śṛṇvañchubhā vāco munīnāṁ paritaḥ prabhuḥ tutoṣa bhaktyutkalitacittavṛttibhṛtāṁ mahān

hearing such auspicious words of the sages all around, that great lord, his heart overflowing with devotion, was pleased.

Verse 16 (padma.5.14.16)

ददर्श चाश्रमं शुद्धं जनजंतुसमाकुलम् । वेदध्वनिहताशेषा मंगलं शृण्वतां नृणाम्

dadarśa cāśramaṁ śuddhaṁ janajaṁtusamākulam vedadhvanihatāśeṣā maṁgalaṁ śṛṇvatāṁ nṛṇām

And he beheld a pure hermitage, thronged with people and living creatures, where all was struck through with Vedic recitation, auspicious to those who heard it —

Verse 17 (padma.5.14.17)

अग्निहोत्रहविर्धूम पवित्रितनभोखिलम् । मुनिवर्यकृतानेक यागयूपसुशोभितम्

agnihotrahavirdhūma pavitritanabhokhilam munivaryakṛtāneka yāgayūpasuśobhitam

the whole sky purified by the smoke of the agnihotra oblation, adorned with many sacrificial posts set up by the finest of sages,

Verse 18 (padma.5.14.18)

यत्र गावस्तु हरिणा पाल्यंते पालनोचिताः । मूषका न खनंत्यस्मिन्बिडालस्य भयाद्बिलम्

yatra gāvastu hariṇā pālyaṁte pālanocitāḥ mūṣakā na khanaṁtyasminbiḍālasya bhayādbilam

where cows worthy of protection were kept safe; where mice did not even dig their burrows, for fear of the cat,

Verse 19 (padma.5.14.19)

मयूरैर्नकुलैः सार्द्धं क्रीडंति फणिनोनिशम् । गजैः सिंहैर्नित्यमत्र स्थीयते मित्रतां गतैः

mayūrairnakulaiḥ sārddhaṁ krīḍaṁti phaṇinoniśam gajaiḥ siṁhairnityamatra sthīyate mitratāṁ gataiḥ

where serpents played at night together with peacocks and mongooses; where elephants and lions, having become friends, dwelt together always;

Verse 20 (padma.5.14.20)

एणास्तत्रत्य नीवारभक्षणेषु कृतादराः । न भयं कुर्वते कालाद्रक्षिता मुनिवृंदकैः

eṇāstatratya nīvārabhakṣaṇeṣu kṛtādarāḥ na bhayaṁ kurvate kālādrakṣitā munivṛṁdakaiḥ

where the deer there, devoted to eating wild rice, felt no fear of death, protected as they were by the throngs of sages.

Verse 21 (padma.5.14.21)

गावः कुंभसमोधस्का नंदिनी समविग्रहाः । कुर्वंति चरणोत्थेन रजसेलां पवित्रिताम्

gāvaḥ kuṁbhasamodhaskā naṁdinī samavigrahāḥ kurvaṁti caraṇotthena rajaselāṁ pavitritām

where cows, their udders full as pitchers, their bodies all alike, sanctified the ground with the dust raised by their hooves.

Verse 22 (padma.5.14.22)

मुनिवर्याः समित्पाणि पद्मैर्धर्मक्रियोचिताम् । दृष्ट्वा पप्रच्छसुमतिं सर्वज्ञं राम मंत्रिणम्

munivaryāḥ samitpāṇi padmairdharmakriyocitām dṛṣṭvā papracchasumatiṁ sarvajñaṁ rāma maṁtriṇam

Seeing the finest sages, fuel in hand, moving about like lotuses fit for righteous deeds, he asked Sumati, Rama's all-knowing minister —

Verse 23 (padma.5.14.23)

शत्रुघ्न उवाच। सुमते कस्य संस्थानं मुनेर्भाति पुरोगतम् । निर्वैरिजंतु संसेव्यं मुनिवृंदसमाकुलम्

śatrughna uvāca sumate kasya saṁsthānaṁ munerbhāti purogatam nirvairijaṁtu saṁsevyaṁ munivṛṁdasamākulam

Shatrughna said: "O Sumati, whose hermitage is this that shines before us, served by creatures free of enmity, thronged with hosts of sages?"

Verse 24 (padma.5.14.24)

श्रोष्यामि मुनिवार्तां च विदधामि पवित्रताम् । निजं वपुस्तदीयाभिर्वार्ताभिर्वर्णनादिभिः

śroṣyāmi munivārtāṁ ca vidadhāmi pavitratām nijaṁ vapustadīyābhirvārtābhirvarṇanādibhiḥ

"I shall hear the account of this sage, and by the telling and description of it, sanctify my own body."

Verse 25 (padma.5.14.25)

इति श्रुत्वा महद्वाक्यं शत्रुघ्नस्य महात्मनः । कथयामास सचिवो रघुनाथस्य धीमतः

iti śrutvā mahadvākyaṁ śatrughnasya mahātmanaḥ kathayāmāsa sacivo raghunāthasya dhīmataḥ

Hearing this great speech of great-souled Shatrughna, the minister of wise Raghunatha then told him —

Verse 26 (padma.5.14.26)

सुमतिरुवाच। च्यवनस्याश्रमं विद्धि महातापसशोभितम् । निर्वैरिजंतुसंकीर्णं मुनिपत्नीभिरावृतम्

sumatiruvāca cyavanasyāśramaṁ viddhi mahātāpasaśobhitam nirvairijaṁtusaṁkīrṇaṁ munipatnībhirāvṛtam

Sumati said: "Know this to be the hermitage of Chyavana, resplendent with great ascetics, thronged with creatures free of enmity, surrounded by the wives of sages —"

Verse 27 (padma.5.14.27)

योऽसौ महामुनिः स्वर्गवैद्ययोर्भागमादधात् । स्वायंभुवमहायज्ञे शक्रमानविभेदनः

yo'sau mahāmuniḥ svargavaidyayorbhāgamādadhāt svāyaṁbhuvamahāyajñe śakramānavibhedanaḥ

"he, that great sage, who once, breaking through Indra's pride, secured a share of the sacrificial offering for the two Ashvins at Svayambhuva's great sacrifice."

Verse 28 (padma.5.14.28)

महामुनेः प्रभावोऽयं न केनापि समाप्यते । तपोबलसमृद्धस्य वेदमूर्तिधरस्य ह

mahāmuneḥ prabhāvo'yaṁ na kenāpi samāpyate tapobalasamṛddhasya vedamūrtidharasya ha

"The majesty of this great sage cannot be matched by anyone — rich in the strength of austerity, bearing the very form of the Veda."

Verse 29 (padma.5.14.29)

श्रुत्वा रामानुजो वार्तां च्यवनस्य महामुनेः । सर्वं पप्रच्छ सुमतिं शक्रमानादिभंजनम्

śrutvā rāmānujo vārtāṁ cyavanasya mahāmuneḥ sarvaṁ papraccha sumatiṁ śakramānādibhaṁjanam

Hearing this account of the great sage Chyavana, Rama's younger brother asked Sumati to tell him everything about the breaking of Indra's pride and the rest —

Verse 30 (padma.5.14.30)

शत्रुघ्न उवाच। कदासौ दस्रयोर्भागं चकार सुरपंक्तिषु । किं कृतं देवराजेन स्वायंभुव महामखे

śatrughna uvāca kadāsau dasrayorbhāgaṁ cakāra surapaṁktiṣu kiṁ kṛtaṁ devarājena svāyaṁbhuva mahāmakhe

Shatrughna said: "When did he secure the share for the two Ashvins among the ranks of the gods? What did the king of gods do at that great sacrifice of Svayambhuva?"

Verse 31 (padma.5.14.31)

सुमतिरुवाच। ब्रह्मवंशेऽतिविख्यातो मुनिर्भृगुरिति श्रुतः । कदाचिद्गतवान्सायं समिदाहरणं प्रति

sumatiruvāca brahmavaṁśe'tivikhyāto munirbhṛguriti śrutaḥ kadācidgatavānsāyaṁ samidāharaṇaṁ prati

Sumati said: "In the lineage of Brahma there lived a sage renowned as Bhrigu; once, at evening, he went out to gather sacrificial fuel."

Verse 32 (padma.5.14.32)

तदा मखविनाशाय दमनो राक्षसो बली । आगत्योच्चैर्जगादेदं महाभयकरं वचः

tadā makhavināśāya damano rākṣaso balī āgatyoccairjagādedaṁ mahābhayakaraṁ vacaḥ

"Then, to destroy the sacrifice, a mighty rakshasa named Damana came and loudly spoke these most terrifying words —"

Verse 33 (padma.5.14.33)

कुत्रास्ति मुनिबंधुः स कुत्र तन्महिलानघा । पुनः पुनरुवाचेदं वचो रोषसमाकुलः

kutrāsti munibaṁdhuḥ sa kutra tanmahilānaghā punaḥ punaruvācedaṁ vaco roṣasamākulaḥ

"'Where is that sage's kinsman? Where is his sinless wife?' — again and again, filled with rage, he spoke these words."

Verse 34 (padma.5.14.34)

तदाहुतवहो ज्ञात्वा राक्षसाद्भयमागतम् । दर्शयामास तज्जायामंतर्वत्नीमनिंदिताम्

tadāhutavaho jñātvā rākṣasādbhayamāgatam darśayāmāsa tajjāyāmaṁtarvatnīmaniṁditām

"Then the sacrificial fire, knowing that danger had come from the rakshasa, showed him that sage's pregnant, blameless wife."

Verse 35 (padma.5.14.35)

जहार राक्षसस्तां तु रुदंतीं कुररीमिव । भृगो रक्षपते रक्ष रक्ष नाथ तपोनिधे

jahāra rākṣasastāṁ tu rudaṁtīṁ kurarīmiva bhṛgo rakṣapate rakṣa rakṣa nātha taponidhe

"The rakshasa seized her, weeping like a female osprey — 'O Bhrigu, lord of protection, save me, save me, my lord, treasury of austerity!'"

Verse 36 (padma.5.14.36)

एवं वदंतीमार्तां तां गृहीत्वा निरगाद्बहिः । दुष्टो वाक्यप्रहारेण बोधयन्स भृगोः सतीम्

evaṁ vadaṁtīmārtāṁ tāṁ gṛhītvā niragādbahiḥ duṣṭo vākyaprahāreṇa bodhayansa bhṛgoḥ satīm

"Seizing her thus crying out in distress, the wicked one carried her out, mocking Bhrigu's chaste wife with a barrage of harsh words."

Verse 37 (padma.5.14.37)

ततो महाभयत्रस्तो गर्भश्चोदरमध्यतः । पपात प्रज्वलन्नेत्रो वैश्वानर इवांगजः

tato mahābhayatrasto garbhaścodaramadhyataḥ papāta prajvalannetro vaiśvānara ivāṁgajaḥ

"Then, terror-stricken with great fear, the child fell from within her womb, its eyes blazing like fire itself."

Verse 38 (padma.5.14.38)

तेनोक्तं मा व्रजाशु त्वं भस्मी भव सुदुर्मते । न हि साध्वी परामर्शं कृत्वा श्रेयोऽधियास्यसि

tenoktaṁ mā vrajāśu tvaṁ bhasmī bhava sudurmate na hi sādhvī parāmarśaṁ kṛtvā śreyo'dhiyāsyasi

"It said: 'Go no further, evil-minded one! Turn to ash! For having laid a hand upon this virtuous woman, you shall never attain any good.'"

Verse 39 (padma.5.14.39)

इत्युक्तः स पपाताशु भस्मीभूतकलेवरः । माता तदार्भकं नीत्वा जगामाश्रममुन्मनाः

ityuktaḥ sa papātāśu bhasmībhūtakalevaraḥ mātā tadārbhakaṁ nītvā jagāmāśramamunmanāḥ

"Thus addressed, he at once fell, his body turned to ashes. The mother, taking up that infant, went to the hermitage, her mind distraught."

Verse 40 (padma.5.14.40)

भृगुर्वह्निकृतं सर्वं ज्ञात्वा कोपसमाकुलः । शशाप सर्वभक्षस्त्वं भव दुष्टारिसूचक

bhṛgurvahnikṛtaṁ sarvaṁ jñātvā kopasamākulaḥ śaśāpa sarvabhakṣastvaṁ bhava duṣṭārisūcaka

"Bhrigu, learning that Agni had done all this, filled with rage, cursed him: 'Become an eater of all things, you wretch who betrayed my wife to the enemy!'"

Verse 41 (padma.5.14.41)

तदा शप्तोऽतिदुःखार्तो जग्राहांघ्र्याशुशुक्षणिः । कुरु मेऽनुग्रहं स्वामिन्कृपार्णव महामते

tadā śapto'tiduḥkhārto jagrāhāṁghryāśuśukṣaṇiḥ kuru me'nugrahaṁ svāminkṛpārṇava mahāmate

"Then Agni, cursed and tormented with great sorrow, clasped his feet: 'Show me your grace, my lord, ocean of mercy, greatly wise one."

Verse 42 (padma.5.14.42)

मयानृतं वचोभीत्या कथितं न गुरुद्रुहा । तस्मान्ममोपरि कृपां कुरु धर्मशिरोमणे

mayānṛtaṁ vacobhītyā kathitaṁ na gurudruhā tasmānmamopari kṛpāṁ kuru dharmaśiromaṇe

"'Out of fear I told an untruth, not out of malice toward my guru; therefore, crest-jewel of dharma, have mercy upon me.'"

Verse 43 (padma.5.14.43)

तदानुग्रहमाधाच्च सर्वभक्षो भवाञ्छुचिः । इत्युक्तवान्हुतभुजं दयार्द्रो मुनितापसः

tadānugrahamādhācca sarvabhakṣo bhavāñchuciḥ ityuktavānhutabhujaṁ dayārdro munitāpasaḥ

"Then he granted him grace: 'You shall become pure, an eater of all things.' Thus spoke that compassionate sage-ascetic to Agni."

Verse 44 (padma.5.14.44)

गर्भाच्च्युतस्य पुत्रस्य जातकर्मादिकं शुचिः । चकार विधिवद्विप्रो दर्भपाणिः सुमंगलः

garbhāccyutasya putrasya jātakarmādikaṁ śuciḥ cakāra vidhivadvipro darbhapāṇiḥ sumaṁgalaḥ

"Then, pure and most auspicious, that twice-born one, darbha grass in hand, duly performed the birth-rites and other rites for the son fallen from the womb."

Verse 45 (padma.5.14.45)

च्यवनाच्च्यवनं प्राहुः पुत्रं सर्वे तपस्विनः । शनैःशनैः स ववृधे शुक्ले प्रतिपदिंदुवत्

cyavanāccyavanaṁ prāhuḥ putraṁ sarve tapasvinaḥ śanaiḥśanaiḥ sa vavṛdhe śukle pratipadiṁduvat

"All the ascetics called that son Chyavana, 'the fallen one,' because he had fallen; slowly he grew, like the moon on the first day of the bright fortnight."

Verse 46 (padma.5.14.46)

स जगाम तपः कर्तुं रेवां लोकैकपावनीम् । शिष्यैः परिवृतः सर्वैस्तपोबलसमन्वितैः

sa jagāma tapaḥ kartuṁ revāṁ lokaikapāvanīm śiṣyaiḥ parivṛtaḥ sarvaistapobalasamanvitaiḥ

"He went to perform austerity on the banks of the Reva, sole purifier of the world, surrounded by all his disciples, endowed with the strength of austerity."

Verse 47 (padma.5.14.47)

गत्वा तत्र तपस्तेपे वर्षाणामयुतं महान् । अंसयोः किंशुकौ जातौ वल्मीकोपरिशोभितौ

gatvā tatra tapastepe varṣāṇāmayutaṁ mahān aṁsayoḥ kiṁśukau jātau valmīkopariśobhitau

"Going there, he performed great austerity for ten thousand years; on his two shoulders grew two kimshuka flowers, resplendent atop an anthill."

Verse 48 (padma.5.14.48)

मृगा आगत्य तस्यांगे कंडूं विदधुरुत्सुकाः । न किंचित्स हि जानाति दुर्वारतपसावृतः

mṛgā āgatya tasyāṁge kaṁḍūṁ vidadhurutsukāḥ na kiṁcitsa hi jānāti durvāratapasāvṛtaḥ

"Deer, coming eagerly, would scratch themselves against his body; wrapped in his unassailable austerity, he perceived nothing at all."

Verse 49 (padma.5.14.49)

कदाचिन्मनुरुद्युक्तस्तीर्थयात्रां प्रति प्रभुः । सकुटुंबो ययौ रेवां महाबलसमावृतः

kadācinmanurudyuktastīrthayātrāṁ prati prabhuḥ sakuṭuṁbo yayau revāṁ mahābalasamāvṛtaḥ

"Once King Manu, the lord, zealously set out on a pilgrimage to sacred fords, together with his family, surrounded by a great host, and went to the Reva."

Verse 50 (padma.5.14.50)

तत्र स्नात्वा महानद्यां संतर्प्य पितृदेवताः । दानानि ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च प्रादाद्विष्णुप्रतुष्टये

tatra snātvā mahānadyāṁ saṁtarpya pitṛdevatāḥ dānāni brāhmaṇebhyaśca prādādviṣṇupratuṣṭaye

"Having bathed there in that great river, and offered tarpana to the ancestors and gods, he gave gifts to the brahmins, for Vishnu's pleasure."

Verse 51 (padma.5.14.51)

तत्कन्या विचरंती सा वनमध्ये इतस्ततः । सखीभिः सहिता रम्या तप्तहाटकभूषणा

tatkanyā vicaraṁtī sā vanamadhye itastataḥ sakhībhiḥ sahitā ramyā taptahāṭakabhūṣaṇā

"His daughter, lovely, accompanied by her friends, adorned with refined-gold ornaments, wandered here and there in the midst of the forest."

Verse 52 (padma.5.14.52)

तत्र दृष्ट्वाथ वल्मीकं महातरुसुशोभितम् । निमेषोन्मेषरहितं तेजः किंचिद्ददर्श सा

tatra dṛṣṭvātha valmīkaṁ mahātarusuśobhitam nimeṣonmeṣarahitaṁ tejaḥ kiṁciddadarśa sā

"Seeing there an anthill, beautified by a great tree, she saw within it something like an unblinking radiance."

Verse 53 (padma.5.14.53)

गत्वा तत्र शलाकाभिरतुदद्रुधिरं स्रवत् । दृष्ट्वा राज्ञांगजा खेदं प्राप्तवत्यतिदुःखिता

gatvā tatra śalākābhiratudadrudhiraṁ sravat dṛṣṭvā rājñāṁgajā khedaṁ prāptavatyatiduḥkhitā

"Going there, she pierced it with a stick, and blood flowed out; seeing this, the king's daughter, greatly distressed, fell into deep anguish."

Verse 54 (padma.5.14.54)

न जनन्यै तथा पित्रे शशंसाघेन विप्लुता । स्वयमेवात्मनात्मानं सा शुशोच भयातुरा

na jananyai tathā pitre śaśaṁsāghena viplutā svayamevātmanātmānaṁ sā śuśoca bhayāturā

"Overwhelmed by the sin, she told neither her mother nor her father; she herself, alone, terrified, grieved within herself."

Verse 55 (padma.5.14.55)

तदा भूश्चलिता राजन्दिवश्चोल्का पपात ह । धूम्रा दिशो भवन्सर्वाः सूर्यश्च परिवेषितः

tadā bhūścalitā rājandivaścolkā papāta ha dhūmrā diśo bhavansarvāḥ sūryaśca pariveṣitaḥ

"Then, O king, the earth trembled, a meteor fell from the sky, all the directions grew smoky, and the sun was ringed with a halo."

Verse 56 (padma.5.14.56)

तदा राज्ञो हया नष्टा हस्तिनो बहवो मृताः । धनं नष्टं रत्नयुतं कलहोभून्मिथस्तदा

tadā rājño hayā naṣṭā hastino bahavo mṛtāḥ dhanaṁ naṣṭaṁ ratnayutaṁ kalahobhūnmithastadā

"Then the king's horses were lost, many elephants died, his jeweled wealth vanished, and quarrels broke out among his people."

Verse 57 (padma.5.14.57)

तदालोक्य नृपो भीतः किंचिदुद्विग्नमानसः । जनानपृच्छत्केनापि मुनये त्वपराधितम्

tadālokya nṛpo bhītaḥ kiṁcidudvignamānasaḥ janānapṛcchatkenāpi munaye tvaparādhitam

"Seeing this, the king, afraid, his mind somewhat troubled, asked his people whether some offense had been done to a sage by anyone."

Verse 58 (padma.5.14.58)

पारंपर्येण तज्ज्ञात्वा स्वपुत्र्याः परिचेष्टितम् । ययौ सुदुःखितस्तत्र समृद्धबलवाहनः

pāraṁparyeṇa tajjñātvā svaputryāḥ pariceṣṭitam yayau suduḥkhitastatra samṛddhabalavāhanaḥ

"Learning by degrees of his own daughter's deed, he went there, greatly grieved, with his abundant army and mounts."

Verse 59 (padma.5.14.59)

तं वै तपोनिधिं वीक्ष्य महता तपसायुतम् । स्तुत्वा प्रसादयामास मुनिवर्य दयां कुरु

taṁ vai taponidhiṁ vīkṣya mahatā tapasāyutam stutvā prasādayāmāsa munivarya dayāṁ kuru

"Beholding that treasury of austerity, endowed with such great asceticism, he praised him and sought to appease him: 'Best of sages, show mercy.'"

Verse 60 (padma.5.14.60)

तस्मै तुष्टो जगादायं मुनिवर्यो महातपाः । तवात्मजाकृतं सर्वमुत्पाताद्यमवेहि तत्

tasmai tuṣṭo jagādāyaṁ munivaryo mahātapāḥ tavātmajākṛtaṁ sarvamutpātādyamavehi tat

"Pleased, that finest of sages, of great austerity, said to him: 'Know that all this — this whole calamity — has been done by your own daughter."

Verse 61 (padma.5.14.61)

तव पुत्र्या महाराज चक्षुर्विस्फोटनं कृतम् । बहुसुस्राव रुधिरं जानती त्वामुवाच न

tava putryā mahārāja cakṣurvisphoṭanaṁ kṛtam bahususrāva rudhiraṁ jānatī tvāmuvāca na

"'Your daughter, great king, pierced an eye; much blood flowed, and not knowing what she had done, she told you nothing."

Verse 62 (padma.5.14.62)

तस्मादियं महाभूप मह्यं देया यथाविधि । ततश्चोत्पातशमनं भविष्यति न संशयः

tasmādiyaṁ mahābhūpa mahyaṁ deyā yathāvidhi tataścotpātaśamanaṁ bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ

"'Therefore, great king, she must be given to me, in due form; then, without doubt, this calamity shall be appeased.'"

Verse 63 (padma.5.14.63)

तच्छ्रुत्वा दुःखितो राजा प्रज्ञाचाक्षुष आत्मजाम् । ददौ कुलवयोरूप शीललक्षणसंयुताम्

tacchrutvā duḥkhito rājā prajñācākṣuṣa ātmajām dadau kulavayorūpa śīlalakṣaṇasaṁyutām

"Hearing this, the grieved king, whose eye of wisdom had opened, gave his daughter, endowed with noble family, youth, beauty, character, and auspicious marks."

Verse 64 (padma.5.14.64)

दत्ता यदा नृपेणेयं कन्या कमललोचना । तदोत्पाताः शमं याताः सर्वे मुनिरुषोद्गताः

dattā yadā nṛpeṇeyaṁ kanyā kamalalocanā tadotpātāḥ śamaṁ yātāḥ sarve muniruṣodgatāḥ

"When the king had given this lotus-eyed maiden, then all the calamities born of the sage's wrath were appeased."

राजा दत्त्वात्मजां तस्मै मुनये तपसांनिधे । प्राप स्वां नगरीं भूयो दुःखितोऽयं दयायुतः

rājā dattvātmajāṁ tasmai munaye tapasāṁnidhe prāpa svāṁ nagarīṁ bhūyo duḥkhito'yaṁ dayāyutaḥ

"The king, having given his daughter to that sage, treasury of austerities, grieved yet compassionate, returned once more to his own city."
