The Mountain of Purushottama
Verse 1 (padma.5.17.1)
शेष उवाच। शत्रुघ्नश्च्यवनस्याथ दृष्ट्वाऽचिंत्यं तपोबलम् । प्रशशंस तपो ब्राह्मं सर्वलोकैकवंदितम्
śeṣa uvāca śatrughnaścyavanasyātha dṛṣṭvā'ciṁtyaṁ tapobalam praśaśaṁsa tapo brāhmaṁ sarvalokaikavaṁditam
Shesha said: Then Shatrughna, having seen Chyavana's unimaginable power of austerity, praised that Brahmanical austerity, honored by all the world.
Verse 2 (padma.5.17.2)
अहो पश्यत योगस्य सिद्धिं ब्राह्मणसत्तमे । यः क्षणादेव दुष्प्रापं तद्विमानमचीकरत्
aho paśyata yogasya siddhiṁ brāhmaṇasattame yaḥ kṣaṇādeva duṣprāpaṁ tadvimānamacīkarat
"Ah, behold the accomplishment of yoga in this finest of brahmins — who in an instant made that chariot, so hard to obtain!"
Verse 3 (padma.5.17.3)
क्व भोगसिद्धिर्महती मुनीनाममलात्मनाम् । क्व तपोबलहीनानां भोगेच्छा मनुजात्मनाम्
kva bhogasiddhirmahatī munīnāmamalātmanām kva tapobalahīnānāṁ bhogecchā manujātmanām
"How great is the accomplishment of enjoyment for sages of stainless soul; how trivial the desire for enjoyment of men lacking the strength of austerity!"
Verse 4 (padma.5.17.4)
इति स्वगतमाशंसञ्छत्रुघ्नश्च्यवनाश्रमे । क्षणं स्थित्वा जलं पीत्वा सुखसंभोगमाप्तवान्
iti svagatamāśaṁsañchatrughnaścyavanāśrame kṣaṇaṁ sthitvā jalaṁ pītvā sukhasaṁbhogamāptavān
Thus reflecting to himself, Shatrughna, having stayed a moment at Chyavana's hermitage and drunk water, obtained comfortable ease.
Verse 5 (padma.5.17.5)
हयस्तस्याः पयोष्ण्याख्या नद्याः पुण्यजलात्मनः । पयः पीत्वा ययौ मार्गे वायुवेगगतिर्महान्
hayastasyāḥ payoṣṇyākhyā nadyāḥ puṇyajalātmanaḥ payaḥ pītvā yayau mārge vāyuvegagatirmahān
That horse, having drunk the water of the sacred river called Payoshni, went on its way, its great gait swift as the wind.
Verse 6 (padma.5.17.6)
योधास्तन्निर्गमं दृष्ट्वा पृष्ठतोऽनुययुस्तदा । हस्तिभिः पत्तिभिः केचिद्रथैः केचन वाजिभिः
yodhāstannirgamaṁ dṛṣṭvā pṛṣṭhato'nuyayustadā hastibhiḥ pattibhiḥ kecidrathaiḥ kecana vājibhiḥ
The warriors, seeing it depart, then followed behind — some with elephants, some on foot, some by chariot, some on horseback.
Verse 7 (padma.5.17.7)
शत्रुघ्नोऽमात्यवर्येण सुमत्याख्येन संयुतः । पृष्ठतोऽनुजगामाशु रथेन हयशोभिना
śatrughno'mātyavaryeṇa sumatyākhyena saṁyutaḥ pṛṣṭhato'nujagāmāśu rathena hayaśobhinā
Shatrughna too, together with the finest minister Sumati, quickly followed behind, by a chariot adorned with horses.
Verse 8 (padma.5.17.8)
गच्छन्वाजीपुरं प्राप्तो विमलाख्यस्य भूपतेः । रत्नातटाख्यं च जनैर्हृष्टपुष्टैः समाकुलम्
gacchanvājīpuraṁ prāpto vimalākhyasya bhūpateḥ ratnātaṭākhyaṁ ca janairhṛṣṭapuṣṭaiḥ samākulam
Going on, he reached Vajipura, of King Vimala, and the place called Ratnatata, thronged with cheerful, well-fed people.
Verse 9 (padma.5.17.9)
स सेवकादुपश्रुत्य रघुनाथ हयोत्तमम् । पुरोंतिके हि संप्राप्तं सर्वयोधसमन्वितम्
sa sevakādupaśrutya raghunātha hayottamam puroṁtike hi saṁprāptaṁ sarvayodhasamanvitam
He, hearing from a servant that Raghunatha's finest horse, together with all its warriors, had reached near the city,
Verse 10 (padma.5.17.10)
तदा गजानां सप्तत्या चंद्रवर्णसमानया । अश्वानामयुतैः सार्धं रथानां कांचनत्विषाम्
tadā gajānāṁ saptatyā caṁdravarṇasamānayā aśvānāmayutaiḥ sārdhaṁ rathānāṁ kāṁcanatviṣām
then, with seventy elephants of moon-like hue, together with ten thousand horses, and golden-hued —
Verse 11 (padma.5.17.11)
सहस्रेण च संयुक्तः शत्रुघ्नं प्रति जग्मिवान् । शत्रुघ्नं स नमस्कृत्य सर्वान्प्राप्तान्महारथान्
sahasreṇa ca saṁyuktaḥ śatrughnaṁ prati jagmivān śatrughnaṁ sa namaskṛtya sarvānprāptānmahārathān
a thousand chariots, went toward Shatrughna; he bowed to Shatrughna, and to all the great charioteers who had come there,
Verse 12 (padma.5.17.12)
वसुकोशं धनं सर्वं राज्यं तस्मै निवेद्य च । किं करोमीति राजा तं जगाद पुरतः स्थितः
vasukośaṁ dhanaṁ sarvaṁ rājyaṁ tasmai nivedya ca kiṁ karomīti rājā taṁ jagāda purataḥ sthitaḥ
and offered him his entire treasury, wealth, and kingdom, saying, standing before him, "What shall I do?"
Verse 13 (padma.5.17.13)
राजापि तं स्वीयपदे प्रणम्रं । दोर्भ्यां दृढं संपरिषस्वजे महान् । जगाम साकं तनये स्वराज्यं । निक्षिप्य सर्वं बहुधन्विभिर्वृतः
rājāpi taṁ svīyapade praṇamraṁ dorbhyāṁ dṛḍhaṁ saṁpariṣasvaje mahān jagāma sākaṁ tanaye svarājyaṁ nikṣipya sarvaṁ bahudhanvibhirvṛtaḥ
That great king too firmly embraced with both arms that Shatrughna who had bowed at his own feet; entrusting his entire kingdom to his son, he went along, surrounded by many bowmen.
Verse 14 (padma.5.17.14)
रामचंद्राभिधां श्रुत्वा सर्वश्रुतिमनोहराम् । सर्वे प्रणम्य तं वाहं ददुर्वसुमहाधनम्
rāmacaṁdrābhidhāṁ śrutvā sarvaśrutimanoharām sarve praṇamya taṁ vāhaṁ dadurvasumahādhanam
Hearing the name Ramachandra, delightful to every ear, all of them bowed to that horse and gave great wealth.
Verse 15 (padma.5.17.15)
राजानं पूजयित्वा तु शत्रुघ्नः परया मुदा । सेनया सहितोऽगच्छद्वाजिनः पृष्ठतस्तदा
rājānaṁ pūjayitvā tu śatrughnaḥ parayā mudā senayā sahito'gacchadvājinaḥ pṛṣṭhatastadā
Having honored the king, Shatrughna, with the greatest joy, then went on, together with his army, behind the horse.
Verse 16 (padma.5.17.16)
एवं स गच्छंस्तन्मार्गे पर्वताग्र्यं ददर्श ह । स्फाटिकैः कानकै रौप्यै राजितं प्रस्थराजिभिः
evaṁ sa gacchaṁstanmārge parvatāgryaṁ dadarśa ha sphāṭikaiḥ kānakai raupyai rājitaṁ prastharājibhiḥ
Thus, going on that road, he beheld the finest of mountains, resplendent with rows of crystal, gold, and silver rocks,
Verse 17 (padma.5.17.17)
जलनिर्झरसंह्रादं नानाधातुकभूतलम् । गैरिकादिकसद्धातु लाक्षारंगविराजितम्
jalanirjharasaṁhrādaṁ nānādhātukabhūtalam gairikādikasaddhātu lākṣāraṁgavirājitam
resounding with the roar of waterfalls, its ground rich with many minerals, resplendent with red ochre and other fine minerals, and with the hue of lac,
Verse 18 (padma.5.17.18)
यत्र सिद्धांगनाः सिद्धैः संक्रीडंत्यकुतोभयाः । गंधर्वाप्सरसो नागा यत्र क्रीडंति लीलया
yatra siddhāṁganāḥ siddhaiḥ saṁkrīḍaṁtyakutobhayāḥ gaṁdharvāpsaraso nāgā yatra krīḍaṁti līlayā
where Siddha-women sport fearlessly with the Siddhas, where gandharvas, apsarases, and nagas play at will,
Verse 19 (padma.5.17.19)
गंगातरंगसंस्पर्श शीतवायुनिषेवितम् । वीणारणद्धंसशुकक्वणसुंदरशोभितम्
gaṁgātaraṁgasaṁsparśa śītavāyuniṣevitam vīṇāraṇaddhaṁsaśukakvaṇasuṁdaraśobhitam
attended by cool breezes touched by the waves of the Ganga, beautifully adorned with the sweet sound of vinas and the calls of swans and parrots.
Verse 20 (padma.5.17.20)
पर्वतं वीक्ष्य शत्रुघ्न उवाच सुमतिं त्विदम् । तद्दर्शनसमुद्भूत विस्मयाविष्टमानसः
parvataṁ vīkṣya śatrughna uvāca sumatiṁ tvidam taddarśanasamudbhūta vismayāviṣṭamānasaḥ
Beholding that mountain, Shatrughna, his mind filled with wonder at the sight, said this to Sumati —
Verse 21 (padma.5.17.21)
कोऽयं महागिरिवरो विस्मापयति मे मनः । महारजतसत्प्रस्थो मार्गे राजति मेऽद्भुतः
ko'yaṁ mahāgirivaro vismāpayati me manaḥ mahārajatasatprastho mārge rājati me'dbhutaḥ
"What is this finest of great mountains that astonishes my mind? Its excellent slopes of pure silver shine, wondrous, on my path."
Verse 22 (padma.5.17.22)
अत्र किं देवतावासो देवानां क्रीडनस्थलम् । यदेतन्मनसः क्षोभं करोति श्रीसमुच्चयैः
atra kiṁ devatāvāso devānāṁ krīḍanasthalam yadetanmanasaḥ kṣobhaṁ karoti śrīsamuccayaiḥ
"Is this the dwelling of gods, a place of sport for the gods, that it stirs my mind with such an accumulation of splendor?"
Verse 23 (padma.5.17.23)
इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य जगाद सुमतिस्तदा । वक्ष्यमाणगुणागार रामचंद्र पदाब्जधीः
iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya jagāda sumatistadā vakṣyamāṇaguṇāgāra rāmacaṁdra padābjadhīḥ
Hearing these words, Sumati, whose mind was fixed on the lotus feet of Ramachandra, treasury of the virtues about to be described, then said —
Verse 24 (padma.5.17.24)
नीलोऽयं पर्वतो राजन्पुरतो भाति भूमिप । मनोहरैर्महाशृङ्गैः स्फाटिकाग्रैः समंततः
nīlo'yaṁ parvato rājanpurato bhāti bhūmipa manoharairmahāśṛṅgaiḥ sphāṭikāgraiḥ samaṁtataḥ
"This is the blue mountain, O king, lord of the earth, shining before us, with lovely great peaks, crystal-tipped, on every side."
Verse 25 (padma.5.17.25)
एनं पश्यंति नो पापाः परदाररता नराः । विष्णोर्गुणगणान्ये वै न मन्यंते नराधमाः
enaṁ paśyaṁti no pāpāḥ paradāraratā narāḥ viṣṇorguṇagaṇānye vai na manyaṁte narādhamāḥ
"Sinful men, devoted to others' wives, do not behold it; the basest of men, who do not honor the host of Vishnu's virtues, do not see it either."
Verse 26 (padma.5.17.26)
श्रुतिस्मृतिसमुत्थं ये धर्मं सद्भिः सुसाधितम् । न मन्यंते स्वबुद्धिस्थ हेतुवादविचारणाः
śrutismṛtisamutthaṁ ye dharmaṁ sadbhiḥ susādhitam na manyaṁte svabuddhistha hetuvādavicāraṇāḥ
"those who do not accept the dharma arising from shruti and smriti, well established by the good, who instead devote themselves only to their own reasoned speculation —"
Verse 27 (padma.5.17.27)
नीलीविक्रयकर्तारो लाक्षाविक्रयकारकाः । यो ब्राह्मणो घृतादीनि विक्रीणाति सुरापकः
nīlīvikrayakartāro lākṣāvikrayakārakāḥ yo brāhmaṇo ghṛtādīni vikrīṇāti surāpakaḥ
"sellers of indigo, sellers of lac, the brahmin who sells ghee and the like, the drinker of liquor,"
Verse 28 (padma.5.17.28)
कन्यां रूपेण संपन्नां न दद्यात्कुलशीलिने । विक्रीणाति द्रव्यलोभात्पिता पापेन मोहितः
kanyāṁ rūpeṇa saṁpannāṁ na dadyātkulaśīline vikrīṇāti dravyalobhātpitā pāpena mohitaḥ
"he who will not give a daughter endowed with beauty to a man of good family and character, but sells her out of greed for wealth, deluded by sin — that father,"
Verse 29 (padma.5.17.29)
पत्नीं दूषयते यस्तु कुलशीलवतीं नरः । स्वयमेवात्ति मधुरं बंधुभ्यो न ददाति यः
patnīṁ dūṣayate yastu kulaśīlavatīṁ naraḥ svayamevātti madhuraṁ baṁdhubhyo na dadāti yaḥ
"he who defiles a wife of good family and character, he who eats sweets himself but gives none to his kin,"
Verse 30 (padma.5.17.30)
भोजने ब्राह्मणार्थे च पाकभेदं करोति यः । कृसरं पायसं वापि नार्थिनं दापयेत्कुधीः
bhojane brāhmaṇārthe ca pākabhedaṁ karoti yaḥ kṛsaraṁ pāyasaṁ vāpi nārthinaṁ dāpayetkudhīḥ
"he who, in cooking food for brahmins, makes a distinction in the preparation — that ill-minded one who will not give the petitioner rich rice or milk-pudding,"
Verse 31 (padma.5.17.31)
अतिथीनवमन्यंते सूर्यतापादितापितान् । अंतरिक्षभुजो ये च ये च विश्वासघातकाः
atithīnavamanyaṁte sūryatāpāditāpitān aṁtarikṣabhujo ye ca ye ca viśvāsaghātakāḥ
"those who dishonor guests scorched by the heat of the sun, and those who betray trust —"
Verse 32 (padma.5.17.32)
न पश्यंति महाराज रघुनाथ पराङ्मुखाः । असौ पुण्यो गिरिवरः पुरुषोत्तम शोभितः
na paśyaṁti mahārāja raghunātha parāṅmukhāḥ asau puṇyo girivaraḥ puruṣottama śobhitaḥ
"such men, great king, averse to Raghunatha, do not see it. That holy, finest of mountains, adorned by Purushottama —"
Verse 33 (padma.5.17.33)
पवित्रयति सर्वान्नो दर्शनेन मनोहरः । अत्र तिष्ठति देवानां मुकुटैरर्चितांघ्रिकः
pavitrayati sarvānno darśanena manoharaḥ atra tiṣṭhati devānāṁ mukuṭairarcitāṁghrikaḥ
"purifies us all by its very sight, so lovely; here dwells he whose feet are worshipped by the crowns of the gods —"
Verse 34 (padma.5.17.34)
पुण्यवद्भिर्दर्शनार्हः पुण्यदः पुरुषोत्तमः । श्रुतयो नेतिनेतीति ब्रुवाणा न विदंति यम्
puṇyavadbhirdarśanārhaḥ puṇyadaḥ puruṣottamaḥ śrutayo netinetīti bruvāṇā na vidaṁti yam
"the finest of men, giver of merit, worthy of the sight of the meritorious, whom even the shrutis, saying 'not this, not this,' do not fully know —"
Verse 35 (padma.5.17.35)
यत्पादरज इंद्रादिदेवैर्मृग्यं सुदुर्ल्लभम् । वेदांतादिभिरन्यूनैर्वाक्यैर्विदंति यं बुधाः
yatpādaraja iṁdrādidevairmṛgyaṁ sudurllabham vedāṁtādibhiranyūnairvākyairvidaṁti yaṁ budhāḥ
"whose very foot-dust is sought after, most rare, even by Indra and the other gods; whom the wise know only through the complete words of the Vedanta and the like."
Verse 36 (padma.5.17.36)
सोऽत्र श्रीमान्नीलशैले वसते पुरुषोत्तमः । आरुह्य तं नमस्कृत्य संपूज्य सुकृतादिना
so'tra śrīmānnīlaśaile vasate puruṣottamaḥ āruhya taṁ namaskṛtya saṁpūjya sukṛtādinā
"That very glorious Purushottama dwells here on the blue mountain. Climbing it, bowing to him, worshipping him with good deeds and the rest,"
Verse 37 (padma.5.17.37)
नैवेद्यं भक्षयित्वा वै भूप भूयाच्चतुर्भुजः । अत्राप्युदाहरंतीममितिहासं पुरातनम्
naivedyaṁ bhakṣayitvā vai bhūpa bhūyāccaturbhujaḥ atrāpyudāharaṁtīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam
"having partaken of his consecrated food, O king, one becomes four-armed indeed. Here too they tell this ancient story —"
Verse 38 (padma.5.17.38)
तं शृणुष्व महाराज सर्वाश्चर्यसमन्वितम् । रत्नग्रीवस्य नृपतेर्यद्वृत्तं सकुटुंबिनः
taṁ śṛṇuṣva mahārāja sarvāścaryasamanvitam ratnagrīvasya nṛpateryadvṛttaṁ sakuṭuṁbinaḥ
"hear it, great king, filled with every wonder — the account of King Ratnagriva, together with his family,"
Verse 39 (padma.5.17.39)
चतुर्भुजादिकं प्राप्तं देवदानवदुर्लभम् । आसीत्कांची महाराज पुरी लोकेषु विश्रुता
caturbhujādikaṁ prāptaṁ devadānavadurlabham āsītkāṁcī mahārāja purī lokeṣu viśrutā
"by which he attained the four-armed form and the rest, hard to attain even for gods and demons. There was, great king, a city called Kanchi, renowned among all the worlds,"
Verse 40 (padma.5.17.40)
महाजनपरीवारसमृद्धबलवाहना । यस्यां वसंति विप्राग्र्याः षट्कर्मनिरता भृशम्
mahājanaparīvārasamṛddhabalavāhanā yasyāṁ vasaṁti viprāgryāḥ ṣaṭkarmaniratā bhṛśam
"rich with the retinue of great people, with abundant army and mounts, in which the finest brahmins, ever devoted to the six duties, dwelt,"
Verse 41 (padma.5.17.41)
सर्वभूतहिते युक्ता रामभक्तिषु लालसाः । क्षत्रिया रणकर्तारः संग्रामेऽप्यपलायिनः
sarvabhūtahite yuktā rāmabhaktiṣu lālasāḥ kṣatriyā raṇakartāraḥ saṁgrāme'pyapalāyinaḥ
"intent on the welfare of all beings, eager for devotion to Rama; kshatriyas, makers of war, never fleeing even in battle,"
Verse 42 (padma.5.17.42)
परदार परद्रव्य परद्रोहपराङ्मुखाः । वैश्याः कुसीदकृष्यादिवाणिज्यशुभवृत्तयः
paradāra paradravya paradrohaparāṅmukhāḥ vaiśyāḥ kusīdakṛṣyādivāṇijyaśubhavṛttayaḥ
"averse to another's wife, another's wealth, and harm to another; vaishyas, of good livelihood in lending, farming, and trade,"
Verse 43 (padma.5.17.43)
कुर्वन्ति रघुनाथस्य पदाम्भोजे रतिं सदा । शूद्रा ब्राह्मणसेवाभिर्गतरात्रिदिनान्तराः
kurvanti raghunāthasya padāmbhoje ratiṁ sadā śūdrā brāhmaṇasevābhirgatarātridināntarāḥ
"ever delighting in devotion to Raghunatha's lotus feet; shudras, their days and nights passed in service to brahmins,"
Verse 44 (padma.5.17.44)
कुर्वंति कथनं रामरामेति रसनाग्रतः । प्राकृताः केऽपि नो पापं कुर्वंति मनसात्र वै
kurvaṁti kathanaṁ rāmarāmeti rasanāgrataḥ prākṛtāḥ ke'pi no pāpaṁ kurvaṁti manasātra vai
"their tongues ever engaged in uttering 'Rama, Rama'; no common person there ever committed sin even in thought."
Verse 45 (padma.5.17.45)
दानं दया दमः सत्यं तत्र तिष्ठंति नित्यशः । वदते न पराबाधं वाक्यं कोऽपि नरोऽनघः
dānaṁ dayā damaḥ satyaṁ tatra tiṣṭhaṁti nityaśaḥ vadate na parābādhaṁ vākyaṁ ko'pi naro'naghaḥ
"Giving, compassion, self-control, and truth stood there always; no sinless man there ever spoke a word that harmed another."
Verse 46 (padma.5.17.46)
न पारक्ये धने लोभं कुर्वंति न हि पातकम् । एवं प्रजा महाराज रत्नग्रीवेण पाल्यते
na pārakye dhane lobhaṁ kurvaṁti na hi pātakam evaṁ prajā mahārāja ratnagrīveṇa pālyate
"They took no greed in another's wealth, nor did they sin. Thus, great king, the subjects were protected by Ratnagriva."
Verse 47 (padma.5.17.47)
षष्ठांशं तत्र गृह्णाति नान्यं लोभविवर्जितः । एवं पालयमानस्य प्रजाधर्मेण भूपतेः
ṣaṣṭhāṁśaṁ tatra gṛhṇāti nānyaṁ lobhavivarjitaḥ evaṁ pālayamānasya prajādharmeṇa bhūpateḥ
"He took there only a sixth part, free of greed for more. Thus, as that king protected his subjects according to dharma,"
Verse 48 (padma.5.17.48)
गतानि बहुवर्षाणि सर्वभोगविलासिनः । विशालाक्षीं महाराज एकदा ह्यूचिवानिदम्
gatāni bahuvarṣāṇi sarvabhogavilāsinaḥ viśālākṣīṁ mahārāja ekadā hyūcivānidam
"many years passed, he enjoying every pleasure. Once, great king, he said this to his wide-eyed queen —"
Verse 49 (padma.5.17.49)
पतिव्रतां धर्मपत्नीं पतिव्रतपरायणाम् । पुत्रा जाता विशालाक्षि प्रजारक्षा धुरंधराः
pativratāṁ dharmapatnīṁ pativrataparāyaṇām putrā jātā viśālākṣi prajārakṣā dhuraṁdharāḥ
"to his chaste, dharma-devoted wife, most devoted to her husband: 'O wide-eyed one, sons have been born to me, capable of bearing the burden of protecting the people."
Verse 50 (padma.5.17.50)
परीवारो महान्मह्यं वर्तते विगतज्वरः । हस्तिनो मम शैलाभा वाजिनः पवनोपमाः
parīvāro mahānmahyaṁ vartate vigatajvaraḥ hastino mama śailābhā vājinaḥ pavanopamāḥ
"'My retinue is great, free of any trouble; my elephants are mountain-like, my horses like the wind;'"
Verse 51 (padma.5.17.51)
रथाश्च सुहयैर्युक्ता वर्तंते मम नित्यशः । महाविष्णुप्रसादेन किंचिन्न्यूनं ममास्ति न
rathāśca suhayairyuktā vartaṁte mama nityaśaḥ mahāviṣṇuprasādena kiṁcinnyūnaṁ mamāsti na
"'my chariots, yoked with fine horses, are ever at my disposal; by Mahavishnu's grace, I lack nothing at all.'"
Verse 52 (padma.5.17.52)
एवं मनोरथस्त्वेकस्तिष्ठते मानसे मम । परं तीर्थं मया नाद्य कृतं परमशोभने
evaṁ manorathastvekastiṣṭhate mānase mama paraṁ tīrthaṁ mayā nādya kṛtaṁ paramaśobhane
"'Yet, O most gracious one, one single wish remains in my mind: I have not yet made a pilgrimage to the greatest sacred place,'"

गर्भवासविरामाय क्षमं गोविंदशोभितम् । वृद्धो जातोऽस्म्यहं तावद्वलीपलितदेहवान्
garbhavāsavirāmāya kṣamaṁ goviṁdaśobhitam vṛddho jāto'smyahaṁ tāvadvalīpalitadehavān
"'one fit to end the dwelling in the womb, adorned by Govinda. I have now grown old, my body wrinkled and grey-haired;'"

करिष्यामि मनोहारि तीर्थसेवनमादृतः । यो नरो जन्मपर्यंतं स्वोदरस्य प्रपूरकः
kariṣyāmi manohāri tīrthasevanamādṛtaḥ yo naro janmaparyaṁtaṁ svodarasya prapūrakaḥ
"'I shall now perform, with reverence, that delightful service of pilgrimage. That man who, until the end of his life, does nothing but fill his own belly,'"

न करोति हरेः पूजां स नरो गोवृषः स्मृतः । तस्माद्गच्छामि भो भद्रे तीर्थयात्रां प्रति प्रिये
na karoti hareḥ pūjāṁ sa naro govṛṣaḥ smṛtaḥ tasmādgacchāmi bho bhadre tīrthayātrāṁ prati priye
"'and does not worship Hari — that man is reckoned a mere bull among cattle. Therefore, my gracious, beloved one, I shall go now on pilgrimage,'"

सकुटुंबः सुते न्यस्य धुरं राज्यस्य निर्भृताम् । इति व्यवस्य संध्यायां हरिं ध्यायन्निशांतरे
sakuṭuṁbaḥ sute nyasya dhuraṁ rājyasya nirbhṛtām iti vyavasya saṁdhyāyāṁ hariṁ dhyāyanniśāṁtare
"'together with my family, having entrusted the burden of the kingdom, unshakably, to my son.' Having resolved thus at twilight, meditating on Hari through the night,"

अद्राक्षीत्स्वप्नमप्येकं ब्राह्मणं तापसं वरम् । प्रातरुत्थाय राजासौ कृत्वा संध्यादिकाः क्रियाः
adrākṣītsvapnamapyekaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ tāpasaṁ varam prātarutthāya rājāsau kṛtvā saṁdhyādikāḥ kriyāḥ
he also saw in a dream a certain finest brahmin ascetic. Rising in the morning, that king, having performed his twilight rites and the rest,

सभां मंत्रिजनैः सार्द्धं सुखमासेदिवान्महान् । तावद्विप्रं ददर्शाथ तापसं कृशदेहिनम्
sabhāṁ maṁtrijanaiḥ sārddhaṁ sukhamāsedivānmahān tāvadvipraṁ dadarśātha tāpasaṁ kṛśadehinam
sat comfortably in his assembly with his ministers, that great one; and then he beheld a brahmin ascetic, his body wasted,
Verse 59 (padma.5.17.59)
जटावल्कलकौपीनधारिणं दंडपाणिनम् । अनेकतीर्थसेवाभिः कृतपुण्यकलेवरम्
jaṭāvalkalakaupīnadhāriṇaṁ daṁḍapāṇinam anekatīrthasevābhiḥ kṛtapuṇyakalevaram
bearing matted locks, bark garment, and loincloth, staff in hand, his body made meritorious by service at many sacred fords.
Verse 60 (padma.5.17.60)
राजा तं वीक्ष्य शिरसा प्रणनाम महाभुजः । अर्घ्यपाद्यादिकं चक्रे प्रहृष्टात्मा महीपतिः
rājā taṁ vīkṣya śirasā praṇanāma mahābhujaḥ arghyapādyādikaṁ cakre prahṛṣṭātmā mahīpatiḥ
Seeing him, the mighty-armed king bowed his head; that lord of the earth, his heart delighted, performed the rites of welcome-water and foot-water.
Verse 61 (padma.5.17.61)
सुखोपविष्टं विश्रांतं पप्रच्छ विदितं द्विजम् । स्वामिंस्त्वद्दर्शनान्मेऽद्य गतं देहस्य पातकम्
sukhopaviṣṭaṁ viśrāṁtaṁ papraccha viditaṁ dvijam svāmiṁstvaddarśanānme'dya gataṁ dehasya pātakam
When that renowned twice-born one was seated comfortably and rested, he asked him: 'My lord, by the very sight of you today the sin of my body has departed.'
Verse 62 (padma.5.17.62)
महांतः कृपणान्पातुं यांति तद्गेहमादरात् । तस्मात्कथय भो विप्र वृद्धस्य मम संप्रति
mahāṁtaḥ kṛpaṇānpātuṁ yāṁti tadgehamādarāt tasmātkathaya bho vipra vṛddhasya mama saṁprati
'Great men go, out of respect, to the house of the poor, to save them; therefore, sir brahmin, tell me now, an old man —'
Verse 63 (padma.5.17.63)
को देवो गर्भनाशाय किं तीर्थं च क्षमं भवेत् । यूयं सर्वगताः श्रेष्ठाः समाधिध्यानतत्पराः
ko devo garbhanāśāya kiṁ tīrthaṁ ca kṣamaṁ bhavet yūyaṁ sarvagatāḥ śreṣṭhāḥ samādhidhyānatatparāḥ
'which god is capable of ending the cycle of rebirth, and which sacred place is fitting for it? You, going everywhere, are among the finest, devoted to meditation and contemplation,'
Verse 64 (padma.5.17.64)
सर्वतीर्थावगाहेन कृतपुण्यात्मनोऽमलाः । यथावच्छृण्वते मह्यं श्रद्दधानाय विस्तरात्
sarvatīrthāvagāhena kṛtapuṇyātmano'malāḥ yathāvacchṛṇvate mahyaṁ śraddadhānāya vistarāt
'purified souls, made meritorious by immersion in every sacred ford — tell me properly, in full, for I listen with faith —'
Verse 65 (padma.5.17.65)
कथयस्व प्रसादेन सर्वतीर्थविचक्षण । ब्राह्मण उवाच। शृणु राजेंद्र वक्ष्यामि यत्पृष्टं तीर्थसेवनम्
kathayasva prasādena sarvatīrthavicakṣaṇa brāhmaṇa uvāca śṛṇu rājeṁdra vakṣyāmi yatpṛṣṭaṁ tīrthasevanam
'tell me, out of your grace, expert in all sacred fords.' The brahmin said: 'Listen, king of kings, I shall tell you of the sacred-place-service you have asked about.'
Verse 66 (padma.5.17.66)
कस्य देवस्य कृपया गर्भनिर्वारणं भवेत् । सेव्यः श्रीरामचंद्रोऽसौ संसारज्वरनाशकः
kasya devasya kṛpayā garbhanirvāraṇaṁ bhavet sevyaḥ śrīrāmacaṁdro'sau saṁsārajvaranāśakaḥ
'By whose grace can rebirth in the womb be prevented? Shri Ramachandra alone is to be served, destroyer of the fever of samsara.'
Verse 67 (padma.5.17.67)
पूज्यः स एव भगवान्पुरुषोत्तमसंज्ञकः । नाना पुर्यो मया दृष्टाः सर्वपापक्षयंकराः
pūjyaḥ sa eva bhagavānpuruṣottamasaṁjñakaḥ nānā puryo mayā dṛṣṭāḥ sarvapāpakṣayaṁkarāḥ
'He alone is worthy of worship, that Lord known by the name Purushottama. I have seen many cities that destroy all sin —'

अयोध्या सरयूस्तापी तथा द्वारं हरेः परम् । अवंती विमला कांची रेवा सागरगामिनी
ayodhyā sarayūstāpī tathā dvāraṁ hareḥ param avaṁtī vimalā kāṁcī revā sāgaragāminī
'Ayodhya, the Sarayu, the Tapi, likewise Dvaraka, Hari's own supreme gate; Avanti, spotless Kanchi, the sea-bound Reva,'
Verse 69 (padma.5.17.69)
गोकर्णं हाटकाख्यं च हत्याकोटिविनाशनम् । मल्लिकाख्यो महाशैलो मोक्षदः पश्यतां नृणाम्
gokarṇaṁ hāṭakākhyaṁ ca hatyākoṭivināśanam mallikākhyo mahāśailo mokṣadaḥ paśyatāṁ nṛṇām
'Gokarna, and the one called Hatakeshvara, destroyer of ten million sins; the great mountain called Mallika, which grants liberation to those who behold it —'
Verse 70 (padma.5.17.70)
यत्रांगेषु नृणां तोयं श्यामं वा निर्मलं भवेत् । पातकस्यापहारीदं मया दृष्टं तु तीर्थकम्
yatrāṁgeṣu nṛṇāṁ toyaṁ śyāmaṁ vā nirmalaṁ bhavet pātakasyāpahārīdaṁ mayā dṛṣṭaṁ tu tīrthakam
'where, on the limbs of men, water may become dark or clear — that sacred place, remover of sin, I have seen with my own eyes.'
Verse 71 (padma.5.17.71)
मया द्वारवती दृष्टा सुरासुर निषेविता । गोमती यत्र वहति साक्षाद्ब्रह्मजला शुभा
mayā dvāravatī dṛṣṭā surāsura niṣevitā gomatī yatra vahati sākṣādbrahmajalā śubhā
'I have seen Dvaravati, served by gods and demons, where the Gomati flows, water truly of Brahman, auspicious —'
Verse 72 (padma.5.17.72)
यत्र स्वापो लयः प्रोक्तो मृतिर्मोक्ष इति श्रुतिः । यस्यां संवसतां नॄणां न कलि प्रभवेत्क्वचित्
yatra svāpo layaḥ prokto mṛtirmokṣa iti śrutiḥ yasyāṁ saṁvasatāṁ nṝṇāṁ na kali prabhavetkvacit
'where sleep itself is called dissolution, and death itself is called liberation, so declare the scriptures; men dwelling there are never touched by the Kali age at all.'
Verse 73 (padma.5.17.73)
चक्रांका यत्र पाषाणा मानवा अपि चक्रिणः । पशवः कीटपक्ष्याद्याः सर्वे चक्रशरीरिणः
cakrāṁkā yatra pāṣāṇā mānavā api cakriṇaḥ paśavaḥ kīṭapakṣyādyāḥ sarve cakraśarīriṇaḥ
'where the very stones bear the mark of the wheel, where men too bear the wheel-mark, where beasts, insects, birds, and all bear the form of the wheel-bearer —'
Verse 74 (padma.5.17.74)
त्रिविक्रमो वसेद्यस्यां सर्वलोकैकपालकः । सा पुरी तु महापुण्यैर्मया दृग्गोचरीकृता
trivikramo vasedyasyāṁ sarvalokaikapālakaḥ sā purī tu mahāpuṇyairmayā dṛggocarīkṛtā
'that city where Trivikrama, sole guardian of all the worlds, dwells — that city I have beheld with my own eyes, by great merit.'
Verse 75 (padma.5.17.75)
कुरुक्षेत्रं मया दृष्टं सर्वहत्यापनोदनम् । स्यमंतपंचकं यत्र महापातकनाशनम्
kurukṣetraṁ mayā dṛṣṭaṁ sarvahatyāpanodanam syamaṁtapaṁcakaṁ yatra mahāpātakanāśanam
'I have seen Kurukshetra, remover of every sin of killing, where Syamantapanchaka destroys the greatest sins;'
Verse 76 (padma.5.17.76)
वाराणसी मया दृष्टा विश्वनाथकृतालया । यत्रोपदिशते मंत्रं तारकं ब्रह्मसंज्ञितम्
vārāṇasī mayā dṛṣṭā viśvanāthakṛtālayā yatropadiśate maṁtraṁ tārakaṁ brahmasaṁjñitam
'I have seen Varanasi, whose temple was made by Vishvanatha himself, where he teaches the deliverance-mantra called Brahman —'
Verse 77 (padma.5.17.77)
यस्यां मृताः कीटपतंगभृंगाः पश्वादयो वा सुरयोनयो वा । स्वकर्मसंभोगसुखं विहाय गच्छंति कैलासमतीतदुःखाः
yasyāṁ mṛtāḥ kīṭapataṁgabhṛṁgāḥ paśvādayo vā surayonayo vā svakarmasaṁbhogasukhaṁ vihāya gacchaṁti kailāsamatītaduḥkhāḥ
'where insects, moths, and bees that die, or beasts and other creatures, or even those of divine origin, leaving behind the pleasure earned by their own deeds, go to Kailasa, their sorrows ended.'
Verse 78 (padma.5.17.78)
मणिकर्णिर्यत्र तीर्थं यस्यामुत्तरवाहिनी । करोति संसृतेर्बंधच्छेदं पापकृतामपि
maṇikarṇiryatra tīrthaṁ yasyāmuttaravāhinī karoti saṁsṛterbaṁdhacchedaṁ pāpakṛtāmapi
'Manikarnika is the sacred ford there, where the Ganga flows northward, and it severs even the bonds of samsara for sinners too;'
Verse 79 (padma.5.17.79)
कपर्दिनः कुंडलिनः सर्पभूषाधरावराः । गजचर्मपरीधाना वसंति गतदुःखकाः
kapardinaḥ kuṁḍalinaḥ sarpabhūṣādharāvarāḥ gajacarmaparīdhānā vasaṁti gataduḥkhakāḥ
'those who dwell there, matted-haired, wearing earrings, adorned with serpent-ornaments, clad in elephant-hide, live free of all sorrow.'
Verse 80 (padma.5.17.80)
कालभैरवनामात्र करोति यमशासनम् । न करोति नृणां वार्तां यमो दंडधरः प्रभुः
kālabhairavanāmātra karoti yamaśāsanam na karoti nṛṇāṁ vārtāṁ yamo daṁḍadharaḥ prabhuḥ
'There, one named Kalabhairava enforces Yama's own rule; the lord Yama, wielder of the rod, does not even take account of men there.'
Verse 81 (padma.5.17.81)
एतादृशी मया दृष्टा काशी विश्वेश्वरांकिता । अनेकान्यपि तीर्थानि मया दृष्टानि भूमिप
etādṛśī mayā dṛṣṭā kāśī viśveśvarāṁkitā anekānyapi tīrthāni mayā dṛṣṭāni bhūmipa
'Such is the Kashi I have seen, marked by Vishveshvara; many other sacred places too, O lord of the earth, I have seen.'
Verse 82 (padma.5.17.82)
परमेकं महच्चित्रं यद्दृष्टं नीलपर्वते । पुरुषोत्तमसान्निध्ये तन्न क्वाप्यक्षिगोचरम्
paramekaṁ mahaccitraṁ yaddṛṣṭaṁ nīlaparvate puruṣottamasānnidhye tanna kvāpyakṣigocaram
'But one great wonder above all, which I saw on the blue mountain, in the presence of Purushottama — that is found nowhere else, visible to the eye.'"
