Verse 1 (padma.5.16.1)

सुमतिरुवाच। एवं तया क्रीडमानः सर्वत्र धरणीतले । नाबुध्यत गतानब्दाञ्छतसंख्या परीमितान्

sumatiruvāca evaṁ tayā krīḍamānaḥ sarvatra dharaṇītale nābudhyata gatānabdāñchatasaṁkhyā parīmitān

Sumati said: Thus sporting with her everywhere upon the earth, he did not notice that hundreds of years, in full measure, had passed.

Verse 2 (padma.5.16.2)

ततो ज्ञात्वाथव तद्विप्रः स्वकालपरिवर्तिनीम् । मनोरथैश्च संपूर्णां स्वस्यप्रियतमां वराम्

tato jñātvāthava tadvipraḥ svakālaparivartinīm manorathaiśca saṁpūrṇāṁ svasyapriyatamāṁ varām

Then that brahmin, realizing that his most excellent beloved had changed with time, filled to the full with the wishes of his heart,

Verse 3 (padma.5.16.3)

न्यवर्तताश्रमं श्रेष्ठं पयोष्णीतीरसंस्थितम् । निर्वैरजं तु जनतासंकुलं मृगसेवितम्

nyavartatāśramaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ payoṣṇītīrasaṁsthitam nirvairajaṁ tu janatāsaṁkulaṁ mṛgasevitam

returned to that finest hermitage, situated on the bank of the Payoshni, free of enmity, thronged with people, frequented by deer.

Verse 4 (padma.5.16.4)

तत्रावसत्स सुतपाः शिष्यैर्वेदसमन्वितैः । सेवितांघ्रियुगो नित्यं तताप परमं तपः

tatrāvasatsa sutapāḥ śiṣyairvedasamanvitaiḥ sevitāṁghriyugo nityaṁ tatāpa paramaṁ tapaḥ

There he dwelt, of great austerity, together with disciples versed in the Vedas, his pair of feet ever served, and continued his supreme austerity.

Verse 5 (padma.5.16.5)

कदाचिदथ शर्यातिर्यष्टुमैच्छत देवताः । तदा च्यवनमानेतुं प्रेषयामास सेवकान्

kadācidatha śaryātiryaṣṭumaicchata devatāḥ tadā cyavanamānetuṁ preṣayāmāsa sevakān

Once King Sharyati desired to sacrifice to the gods; then he sent servants to bring Chyavana.

Verse 6 (padma.5.16.6)

तैराहूतो द्विजवरस्तत्रागच्छन्महातपाः । सुकन्यया धर्मपत्न्या स्वाचार परिनिष्ठया

tairāhūto dvijavarastatrāgacchanmahātapāḥ sukanyayā dharmapatnyā svācāra pariniṣṭhayā

Summoned by them, that finest of the twice-born, of great austerity, came there together with Sukanya, his righteous wife, perfectly established in her own conduct.

Verse 7 (padma.5.16.7)

आगतं तं मुनिवरं पत्न्या पुत्र्या महायशाः । ददर्श दुहितुः पार्श्वे पुरुषं सूर्यवर्चसम्

āgataṁ taṁ munivaraṁ patnyā putryā mahāyaśāḥ dadarśa duhituḥ pārśve puruṣaṁ sūryavarcasam

That greatly famed king, beholding that finest of sages arrived beside his daughter, saw a man radiant as the sun.

Verse 8 (padma.5.16.8)

राजा दुहितरं प्राह कृतपादाभिवंदनाम् । आशिषो न प्रयुंजानो नातिप्रीतमना इव

rājā duhitaraṁ prāha kṛtapādābhivaṁdanām āśiṣo na prayuṁjāno nātiprītamanā iva

The king said to his daughter, who had bowed at his feet, without offering any blessing, his heart seemingly displeased —

Verse 9 (padma.5.16.9)

चिकीर्षितं ते किमिदं पतिस्त्वया । प्रलंभितो लोकनमस्कृतो मुनिः । त्वया जराग्रस्तमसंमतं पतिं । विहाय जारं भजसेऽमुमध्वगम्

cikīrṣitaṁ te kimidaṁ patistvayā pralaṁbhito lokanamaskṛto muniḥ tvayā jarāgrastamasaṁmataṁ patiṁ vihāya jāraṁ bhajase'mumadhvagam

"What is this you have done? Have you deceived your husband, a sage honored by the world? Having abandoned your aged, unfit husband, do you now love this wayfaring paramour?"

Verse 10 (padma.5.16.10)

कथं मतिस्तेऽवगतान्यथासतां कुलप्रसूतेः कुलदूषणं त्विदम् । बिभर्षि जारं यदपत्रपाकुलं पितुः स्वभर्तुश्च नयस्यधस्तमाम्

kathaṁ matiste'vagatānyathāsatāṁ kulaprasūteḥ kuladūṣaṇaṁ tvidam bibharṣi jāraṁ yadapatrapākulaṁ pituḥ svabhartuśca nayasyadhastamām

"How has your understanding gone astray, O born of a righteous lineage? This is a stain upon your family — that you keep a shameless paramour, bringing both your father and your own husband to utter disgrace."

Verse 11 (padma.5.16.11)

एवं ब्रुवाणं पितरं स्मयमाना शुचिस्मिता । उवाच तात जामाता तवैष भृगुनंदनः

evaṁ bruvāṇaṁ pitaraṁ smayamānā śucismitā uvāca tāta jāmātā tavaiṣa bhṛgunaṁdanaḥ

To her father speaking thus, she, of pure smile, replied, smiling: "Father, this is indeed your own son-in-law, the son of Bhrigu."

Verse 12 (padma.5.16.12)

शशंस पित्रे तत्सर्वं वयोरूपाभिलंभनम् । विस्मितः परमप्रीतस्तनयां परिषस्वजे

śaśaṁsa pitre tatsarvaṁ vayorūpābhilaṁbhanam vismitaḥ paramaprītastanayāṁ pariṣasvaje

She told her father the whole story — the gaining of youth and beauty. Astonished, filled with the greatest joy, he embraced his daughter.

Verse 13 (padma.5.16.13)

सोमेनायाजयद्वीरं ग्रहं सोमस्य चाग्रहीत् । असोमपोरप्यश्विनोश्च्यवनः स्वेन तेजसा

somenāyājayadvīraṁ grahaṁ somasya cāgrahīt asomaporapyaśvinoścyavanaḥ svena tejasā

Chyavana, by his own power, had the hero sacrifice with Soma, and, for the Ashvins too, who had no right to Soma, he himself took a share of the Soma-libation.

Verse 14 (padma.5.16.14)

ग्रहं तु ग्राहयामास तपोबलसमन्वितः । वज्रं गृहीत्वा शक्रस्तु हंतुं ब्राह्मणसत्तमम्

grahaṁ tu grāhayāmāsa tapobalasamanvitaḥ vajraṁ gṛhītvā śakrastu haṁtuṁ brāhmaṇasattamam

Endowed with the strength of austerity, he made them take their share. Then Indra, taking up the thunderbolt, to slay that finest of brahmins —

Verse 15 (padma.5.16.15)

अपंक्तिपावनौ देवौ कुर्वाणं पंक्तिगोचरौ । शक्रं वज्रधरं दृष्ट्वा मुनिः स्वहननोद्यतम्

apaṁktipāvanau devau kurvāṇaṁ paṁktigocarau śakraṁ vajradharaṁ dṛṣṭvā muniḥ svahananodyatam

intent on striking down those two gods who make even those unfit for the sacrificial row fit for it — seeing Indra, bearer of the thunderbolt, thus intent on slaying him, that sage,

Verse 16 (padma.5.16.16)

हुंकारमकरोद्धीमान्स्तंभयामास तद्भुजम् । इंद्रः स्तब्धभुजस्तत्र दृष्टः सर्वैश्च मानवैः

huṁkāramakaroddhīmānstaṁbhayāmāsa tadbhujam iṁdraḥ stabdhabhujastatra dṛṣṭaḥ sarvaiśca mānavaiḥ

wise, uttered a roar and paralyzed his arm; Indra, his arm stiffened, was seen there by all the people,

Verse 17 (padma.5.16.17)

कोपेन श्वसमानोऽहिर्यथा मंत्रनियंत्रितः । तुष्टाव स मुनिं शक्रः स्तब्धबाहुस्तपोनिधिम्

kopena śvasamāno'hiryathā maṁtraniyaṁtritaḥ tuṣṭāva sa muniṁ śakraḥ stabdhabāhustaponidhim

hissing with rage like a serpent bound by a mantra-spell; that Indra, his arm stiffened, praised the sage, that treasury of austerity.

Verse 18 (padma.5.16.18)

अश्विभ्यां भागदानं च कुर्वंतं निर्भयांतरम् । कथयामास भोः स्वामिन्दीयतामश्विनोर्बलि

aśvibhyāṁ bhāgadānaṁ ca kurvaṁtaṁ nirbhayāṁtaram kathayāmāsa bhoḥ svāmindīyatāmaśvinorbali

Fearless within, granting the Ashvins their share, Indra said: "Sir, my lord, let the offering to the Ashvins be given."

Verse 19 (padma.5.16.19)

मया न वार्यते तात क्षमस्वाघं महत्कृतम् । इत्युक्तः स मुनिः कोपं जहौ तूर्णं कृपानिधिः

mayā na vāryate tāta kṣamasvāghaṁ mahatkṛtam ityuktaḥ sa muniḥ kopaṁ jahau tūrṇaṁ kṛpānidhiḥ

"I shall not oppose it, father; forgive the great wrong I have done." Thus addressed, that sage, ocean of mercy, quickly abandoned his anger.

Verse 20 (padma.5.16.20)

इंद्रो मुक्तभुजोऽप्यासीत्तदानीं पुरुषर्षभ । एतद्वीक्ष्य जनाः सर्वे कौतुकाविष्टमानसाः

iṁdro muktabhujo'pyāsīttadānīṁ puruṣarṣabha etadvīkṣya janāḥ sarve kautukāviṣṭamānasāḥ

Indra too, O bull among men, his arm freed, was present there then. Seeing this, all the people, their minds filled with wonder,

Verse 21 (padma.5.16.21)

शशंसुर्ब्राह्मणबलं ते तु देवादिदुर्ल्लभम् । ततो राजा बहुधनं ब्राह्मणेभ्योऽददन्महान्

śaśaṁsurbrāhmaṇabalaṁ te tu devādidurllabham tato rājā bahudhanaṁ brāhmaṇebhyo'dadanmahān

praised that strength of brahmins, hard to attain even for the gods. Then that great king gave much wealth to the brahmins,

Verse 22 (padma.5.16.22)

चक्रे चावभृथस्नानं यागांते शत्रुतापनः । त्वया पृष्टं यदाचक्ष्व च्यवनस्य महोदयम्

cakre cāvabhṛthasnānaṁ yāgāṁte śatrutāpanaḥ tvayā pṛṣṭaṁ yadācakṣva cyavanasya mahodayam

and that scorcher of foes performed the concluding bath at the end of the sacrifice. What you asked of me — the great glory of Chyavana — I have told you all of it,

Verse 23 (padma.5.16.23)

स मया कथितः सर्वस्तपोयोगसमन्वितः । नमस्कृत्वा तपोमूर्तिमिमं प्राप्य जयाशिषः

sa mayā kathitaḥ sarvastapoyogasamanvitaḥ namaskṛtvā tapomūrtimimaṁ prāpya jayāśiṣaḥ

all of it, together with his mastery of austerity and yoga, has been told by me. Having bowed to this embodiment of austerity, and obtained blessings of victory,

Verse 24 (padma.5.16.24)

प्रेषय त्वं सपत्नीकं रामयज्ञे मनोरमे । शेष उवाच। एवं तु कुर्वतोर्वार्तां हयः प्रापाश्रमं प्रति

preṣaya tvaṁ sapatnīkaṁ rāmayajñe manorame śeṣa uvāca evaṁ tu kurvatorvārtāṁ hayaḥ prāpāśramaṁ prati

"send for him, together with his wife, to Rama's delightful sacrifice." Shesha said: While they were thus conversing, the horse reached near the hermitage,

Verse 25 (padma.5.16.25)

विदधद्वायुवेगेन पृथ्वीं खुरविलक्षिताम् । दूर्वांकुरान्मुखाग्रेण चरंस्तत्र महाश्रमे

vidadhadvāyuvegena pṛthvīṁ khuravilakṣitām dūrvāṁkurānmukhāgreṇa caraṁstatra mahāśrame

marking the earth with its hooves at the speed of the wind, grazing on shoots of durva grass with the tip of its mouth, roaming there in that great hermitage.

Verse 26 (padma.5.16.26)

मुनयो यावदादाय दर्भान्स्नातुं गता नदीम् । शत्रुघ्नः शत्रुसेनायास्तापनः शूरसंमतः

munayo yāvadādāya darbhānsnātuṁ gatā nadīm śatrughnaḥ śatrusenāyāstāpanaḥ śūrasaṁmataḥ

While the sages, having gathered darbha grass, had gone to the river to bathe, Shatrughna, scorcher of the enemy's army, honored by heroes,

Verse 27 (padma.5.16.27)

तावत्प्राप मुनेर्वासं च्यवनस्यातिशोभितम् । गत्वा तदाश्रमे वीरो ददर्श च्यवनं मुनिम्

tāvatprāpa munervāsaṁ cyavanasyātiśobhitam gatvā tadāśrame vīro dadarśa cyavanaṁ munim

reached the most beautiful dwelling of the sage Chyavana; going there to that hermitage, the hero saw the sage Chyavana,

Verse 28 (padma.5.16.28)

सुकन्यायाः समीपस्थं तपोमूर्तिमिवस्थितम् । ववंदे चरणौ तस्य स्वाभिधां समुदाहरन्

sukanyāyāḥ samīpasthaṁ tapomūrtimivasthitam vavaṁde caraṇau tasya svābhidhāṁ samudāharan

seated near Sukanya, as if the very embodiment of austerity. He bowed at his feet, announcing his own name —

Verse 29 (padma.5.16.29)

शत्रुघ्नोहं रघुपतेर्भ्राता वाहस्य पालकः

śatrughnohaṁ raghupaterbhrātā vāhasya pālakaḥ

"I am Shatrughna, brother of the lord of the Raghus, guardian of the horse."

Verse 30 (padma.5.16.30)

नमस्करोमि युष्मभ्यं महापापोपशांतये । इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य जगाद मुनिसत्तमः

namaskaromi yuṣmabhyaṁ mahāpāpopaśāṁtaye iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya jagāda munisattamaḥ

"I bow to you, for the pacifying of great sin." Hearing these words, that finest of sages said —

Verse 31 (padma.5.16.31)

शत्रुघ्न तव कल्याणं भूयान्नरवरर्षभ । यज्ञं पालयमानस्य कीर्तिस्ते विपुला भवेत्

śatrughna tava kalyāṇaṁ bhūyānnaravararṣabha yajñaṁ pālayamānasya kīrtiste vipulā bhavet

"Shatrughna, may great good come to you, finest of men! Protecting the sacrifice, may your fame become vast."

Verse 32 (padma.5.16.32)

चित्रं पश्यत भो विप्रा रामोऽपि मखकारकः । यन्नामस्मरणादीनि कुर्वंति पापनाशनम्

citraṁ paśyata bho viprā rāmo'pi makhakārakaḥ yannāmasmaraṇādīni kurvaṁti pāpanāśanam

"Behold this wonder, O brahmins — Rama too is a performer of sacrifice, whose very name, when remembered, destroys sin."

Verse 33 (padma.5.16.33)

महापातकसंयुक्ताः परदाररता नराः । यन्नामस्मरणोद्युक्ता मुक्ता यांति परां गतिम्

mahāpātakasaṁyuktāḥ paradāraratā narāḥ yannāmasmaraṇodyuktā muktā yāṁti parāṁ gatim

"Men steeped in great sin, devoted to others' wives, freed by their diligence in remembering his name, attain the supreme destination."

Verse 34 (padma.5.16.34)

पादपद्मसमुत्थेन रेणुना ग्रावमूर्तिभृत् । तत्क्षणाद्गौतमार्धांगी जाता मोहनरूपधृक्

pādapadmasamutthena reṇunā grāvamūrtibhṛt tatkṣaṇādgautamārdhāṁgī jātā mohanarūpadhṛk

"By the dust risen from his lotus feet, Gautama's own wife, though bearing the very form of stone, at that same instant took on an enchanting form."

Verse 35 (padma.5.16.35)

मामकीयस्य रूपस्य ध्यानेन प्रेमनिर्भरा । सर्वपातकराशिं सा दग्ध्वा प्राप्ता सुरूपताम्

māmakīyasya rūpasya dhyānena premanirbharā sarvapātakarāśiṁ sā dagdhvā prāptā surūpatām

"By meditation upon my own form, overflowing with love, she, having burnt away her whole mass of sin, attained beautiful form again."

Verse 36 (padma.5.16.36)

दैत्या यस्य मनोहारिरूपं प्रधनमण्डले । पश्यंतः प्रापुरेतस्य रूपं विकृतिवर्जितम्

daityā yasya manohārirūpaṁ pradhanamaṇḍale paśyaṁtaḥ prāpuretasya rūpaṁ vikṛtivarjitam

"The demons, seeing his enchanting form on the battlefield, attained his very form, free from all deformity."

Verse 37 (padma.5.16.37)

योगिनो ध्याननिष्ठा ये यं ध्यात्वा योगमास्थिताः । संसारभयनिर्मुक्ताः प्रयाताः परमं पदम्

yogino dhyānaniṣṭhā ye yaṁ dhyātvā yogamāsthitāḥ saṁsārabhayanirmuktāḥ prayātāḥ paramaṁ padam

"The yogis devoted to meditation, who, meditating upon him, became established in yoga, freed from the fear of samsara, went to the supreme abode."

Verse 38 (padma.5.16.38)

धन्योऽहमद्य रामस्य मुखं द्रक्ष्यामि शोभनम् । पयोजदलनेत्रांतं सुनसं सुभ्रुसून्नतम्

dhanyo'hamadya rāmasya mukhaṁ drakṣyāmi śobhanam payojadalanetrāṁtaṁ sunasaṁ subhrusūnnatam

"Blessed am I, that I shall today behold Rama's lovely face, its eyes like lotus petals, its nose fine, its brows raised and graceful."

Verse 39 (padma.5.16.39)

सा जिह्वा रघुनाथस्य नामकीर्तनमादरात् । करोति विपरीता या फणिनो रसना समा

sā jihvā raghunāthasya nāmakīrtanamādarāt karoti viparītā yā phaṇino rasanā samā

"That tongue which, contrary to its usual nature — like a serpent's forked tongue — performs, with reverence, the chanting of Raghunatha's name — [is blessed indeed]."

Verse 40 (padma.5.16.40)

अद्य प्राप्तं तपःपुण्यमद्य पूर्णा मनोरथाः । यद्द्रक्ष्ये रामचंद्रस्य मुखं ब्रह्मादिदुर्ल्लभम्

adya prāptaṁ tapaḥpuṇyamadya pūrṇā manorathāḥ yaddrakṣye rāmacaṁdrasya mukhaṁ brahmādidurllabham

"Today the merit of my austerity has been obtained, today my desires are fulfilled, in that I shall behold Ramachandra's face, hard to attain even for Brahma and the rest."

Verse 41 (padma.5.16.41)

तत्पादरेणुना स्वांगं पवित्रं विदधाम्यहम् । विचित्रतरवार्ताभिः पावये रसनां स्वकाम्

tatpādareṇunā svāṁgaṁ pavitraṁ vidadhāmyaham vicitrataravārtābhiḥ pāvaye rasanāṁ svakām

"With the dust of his feet I shall purify my own body; with the most wondrous accounts of him I shall purify my own tongue."

Verse 42 (padma.5.16.42)

इत्यादि रामचरणस्मरणप्रबुद्ध- प्रेमव्रजप्रसृतगद्गदवागुदश्रुः । श्रीरामचंद्र रघुपुंगवधर्ममूर्ते भक्तानुकंपकसमुद्धर संसृतेर्माम्

ityādi rāmacaraṇasmaraṇaprabuddha- premavrajaprasṛtagadgadavāgudaśruḥ śrīrāmacaṁdra raghupuṁgavadharmamūrte bhaktānukaṁpakasamuddhara saṁsṛtermām

Thus speaking, his devotion awakened by remembrance of Rama's feet, his voice choked in a flood of love, tears streaming from his eyes — "O Shri Ramachandra, bull of the Raghus, embodiment of dharma, compassionate to your devotees, lift me up from this cycle of birth and death!"

Verse 43 (padma.5.16.43)

जल्पन्नश्रुकलापूर्णो मुनीनां पुरतस्तदा । नाज्ञासीत्तत्र पारक्यं निजं ध्यानेन संस्थितः

jalpannaśrukalāpūrṇo munīnāṁ puratastadā nājñāsīttatra pārakyaṁ nijaṁ dhyānena saṁsthitaḥ

Speaking thus, his eyes brimming with a flood of tears, before the sages, established in his own meditation, he knew nothing else of the world around him there.

Verse 44 (padma.5.16.44)

शत्रुघ्नस्तं मुनिं प्राह स्वामिन्नो मखसत्तमः । क्रियतां भवता पादरजसा सुपवित्रितः

śatrughnastaṁ muniṁ prāha svāminno makhasattamaḥ kriyatāṁ bhavatā pādarajasā supavitritaḥ

Shatrughna said to that sage: "My lord, let our finest sacrifice be purified by the dust of your feet."

Verse 45 (padma.5.16.45)

महद्भाग्यं रघुपतेर्यद्युष्मन्मानसांतरे । तिष्ठत्यसौ महाबाहुः सर्वलोकसुपूजितः

mahadbhāgyaṁ raghupateryadyuṣmanmānasāṁtare tiṣṭhatyasau mahābāhuḥ sarvalokasupūjitaḥ

"It is great fortune indeed for the lord of the Raghus, that he, mighty-armed, worshipped by all the worlds, dwells within your mind."

Verse 46 (padma.5.16.46)

इत्युक्तः सपरीवारः सर्वाग्निपरिसंवृतः । जगाम च्यवनस्तत्र प्रमोदह्रदसंप्लुतः

ityuktaḥ saparīvāraḥ sarvāgniparisaṁvṛtaḥ jagāma cyavanastatra pramodahradasaṁplutaḥ

Thus addressed, together with his household, surrounded by all his sacred fires, Chyavana went there, immersed in a lake of joy.

Verse 47 (padma.5.16.47)

हनूमांस्तं पदायांतं रामभक्तमवेक्ष्य ह । शत्रुघ्नं निजगादासौ वचो विनयसंयुतः

hanūmāṁstaṁ padāyāṁtaṁ rāmabhaktamavekṣya ha śatrughnaṁ nijagādāsau vaco vinayasaṁyutaḥ

Hanuman, seeing that devotee of Rama coming there on foot, spoke to Shatrughna these words, filled with humility —

Verse 48 (padma.5.16.48)

स्वामिन्कथयसि त्वं चेन्महापुरुषसुंदरम् । रामभक्तं मुनिवरं नयामि स्वपुरीमहम्

svāminkathayasi tvaṁ cenmahāpuruṣasuṁdaram rāmabhaktaṁ munivaraṁ nayāmi svapurīmaham

"My lord, if you but say the word, I shall carry this handsome, finest sage, devotee of Rama, to your city myself."

Verse 49 (padma.5.16.49)

इति श्रुत्वा महद्वाक्यं कपिवीरस्य शत्रुहा । आदिदेश हनूमंतं गच्छ प्रापयतं मुनिम्

iti śrutvā mahadvākyaṁ kapivīrasya śatruhā ādideśa hanūmaṁtaṁ gaccha prāpayataṁ munim

Hearing this great speech of that hero of monkeys, Shatrughna, slayer of enemies, commanded Hanuman: "Go, bring the sage."

Verse 50 (padma.5.16.50)

हनूमांस्तं मुनिं स्वीये पृष्ठ आरोप्य वेगवान् । सकुटुंबं निनायाशु वायुः ख इव सर्वगः

hanūmāṁstaṁ muniṁ svīye pṛṣṭha āropya vegavān sakuṭuṁbaṁ nināyāśu vāyuḥ kha iva sarvagaḥ

Hanuman, swift, setting that sage upon his own back, at once carried him, together with his household, like the wind, going everywhere through the sky.

Verse 51 (padma.5.16.51)

आगतं तं मुनिं दृष्ट्वा रामो मतिमतां वरः । अर्घ्यपाद्यादिकं चक्रे प्रीतः प्रणयविह्वलः

āgataṁ taṁ muniṁ dṛṣṭvā rāmo matimatāṁ varaḥ arghyapādyādikaṁ cakre prītaḥ praṇayavihvalaḥ

Seeing that sage arrived, Rama, finest of the wise, pleased, overwhelmed with affection, performed the rites of welcome-water and foot-water.

Verse 52 (padma.5.16.52)

धन्योऽस्मि मुनिवर्यस्य दर्शनेन तवाधुना । पवित्रितो मखो मह्यं सर्वसंभारसंभृतः

dhanyo'smi munivaryasya darśanena tavādhunā pavitrito makho mahyaṁ sarvasaṁbhārasaṁbhṛtaḥ

"I am blessed now by the very sight of you, finest of sages; my sacrifice, furnished with every provision, has been purified."

Verse 53 (padma.5.16.53)

इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य च्यवनो मुनिसत्तमः । उवाच प्रेमनिर्भिन्न पुलकांगोऽतिनिर्वृतः

iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya cyavano munisattamaḥ uvāca premanirbhinna pulakāṁgo'tinirvṛtaḥ

Hearing this speech, Chyavana, that finest of sages, overflowing with love, his body bristling with delight, greatly content, said —

स्वामिन्ब्रह्मण्यदेवस्य तव वाडवपूजनम् । युक्तमेव महाराज धर्ममार्गं प्ररक्षितुः

svāminbrahmaṇyadevasya tava vāḍavapūjanam yuktameva mahārāja dharmamārgaṁ prarakṣituḥ

"My lord, god of the brahmins, this honoring of a brahmin by you is most fitting indeed, great king, protector of the path of dharma."
