Ratnagriva's Pilgrimage
Verse 1 (padma.5.19.1)
ब्राह्मण उवाच। इति श्रुत्वा तु तद्वाक्यं भिल्लानामहमद्भुतम् । अत्याश्चर्यमिदं मत्वा प्रहृष्टोऽभवमित्युत
brāhmaṇa uvāca iti śrutvā tu tadvākyaṁ bhillānāmahamadbhutam atyāścaryamidaṁ matvā prahṛṣṭo'bhavamityuta
The brahmin said: "Hearing this wondrous speech of the Bhils, considering it most astonishing, I became overjoyed indeed."
Verse 2 (padma.5.19.2)
गंगासागरसंयोगे स्नात्वा पुण्यकलेवरः । शृंगमारुरुहे तत्र मणिमाणिक्यचित्रितम्
gaṁgāsāgarasaṁyoge snātvā puṇyakalevaraḥ śṛṁgamāruruhe tatra maṇimāṇikyacitritam
"Having bathed, my body made meritorious, at the confluence of the Ganga and the sea, I climbed there that peak, adorned with gems and rubies."
Verse 3 (padma.5.19.3)
तत्रापश्यं महाराज देवं देवादिवंदितम् । नमस्कृत्वा कृतार्थोऽहं जातोन्नप्राशनेन च
tatrāpaśyaṁ mahārāja devaṁ devādivaṁditam namaskṛtvā kṛtārtho'haṁ jātonnaprāśanena ca
"There, great king, I saw the god, worshipped by the gods and others; having bowed to him, I became fulfilled, and having partaken of that food,"
Verse 4 (padma.5.19.4)
चतुर्भुजत्वं संप्राप्तः शंखचक्रादिचिह्नितम् । पुरुषोत्तमदर्शनेन न पुनर्गर्भमाविशम्
caturbhujatvaṁ saṁprāptaḥ śaṁkhacakrādicihnitam puruṣottamadarśanena na punargarbhamāviśam
"I attained the four-armed state, marked with conch, discus, and the rest; by the sight of Purushottama, I did not enter the womb again."
Verse 5 (padma.5.19.5)
राजंस्त्वमपि तत्राशु गच्छ नीलाभिधं गिरिम् । कृतार्थं कुरु चात्मानं गर्भदुःखविवर्जितम्
rājaṁstvamapi tatrāśu gaccha nīlābhidhaṁ girim kṛtārthaṁ kuru cātmānaṁ garbhaduḥkhavivarjitam
"O king, go you too quickly there, to the mountain called Nila; make yourself fulfilled, freed from the suffering of the womb."
Verse 6 (padma.5.19.6)
इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य वाडवाग्र्यस्य धीमतः । पप्रच्छ हृष्टगात्रस्तु तीर्थयात्राविधिं मुनिम्
ityākarṇya vacastasya vāḍavāgryasya dhīmataḥ papraccha hṛṣṭagātrastu tīrthayātrāvidhiṁ munim
Hearing these words of that finest, wise brahmin, his body thrilled with joy, he asked the sage about the procedure for pilgrimage.
Verse 7 (padma.5.19.7)
राजोवाच। साधु विप्राग्र्य हे साधो त्वया प्रोक्तं ममानघ । पुरुषोत्तममाहात्म्यं शृण्वतां पापनाशनम्
rājovāca sādhu viprāgrya he sādho tvayā proktaṁ mamānagha puruṣottamamāhātmyaṁ śṛṇvatāṁ pāpanāśanam
The king said: "Well said, finest of brahmins, good sir, sinless one — the glory of Purushottama that you have told me destroys the sin of those who hear it."
Verse 8 (padma.5.19.8)
ब्रूहि तत्तीर्थयात्रायां विधिं श्रुतिसमन्वितम् । विधिना केन संपूर्ण फलप्राप्तिर्नृणां भवेत्
brūhi tattīrthayātrāyāṁ vidhiṁ śrutisamanvitam vidhinā kena saṁpūrṇa phalaprāptirnṛṇāṁ bhavet
"Tell me the procedure for that pilgrimage, in accordance with the scriptures — by what rite do men attain the complete fruit?"
Verse 9 (padma.5.19.9)
ब्राह्मण उवाच। शृणु राजन्प्रवक्ष्यामि तीर्थयात्राविधिं शुभम् । येन संप्राप्यते देवः सुरासुरनमस्कृतः
brāhmaṇa uvāca śṛṇu rājanpravakṣyāmi tīrthayātrāvidhiṁ śubham yena saṁprāpyate devaḥ surāsuranamaskṛtaḥ
The brahmin said: "Listen, king, I shall tell you the auspicious procedure for pilgrimage, by which the god worshipped by gods and demons is attained."
Verse 10 (padma.5.19.10)
वलीपलितदेहो वा यौवनेनान्वितोऽपि वा । ज्ञात्वा मृत्युमनिस्तीर्यं हरिं शरणमाव्रजेत्
valīpalitadeho vā yauvanenānvito'pi vā jñātvā mṛtyumanistīryaṁ hariṁ śaraṇamāvrajet
"Whether one's body is wrinkled and grey-haired, or one is still in the flush of youth, knowing that death cannot be crossed beyond, one should take refuge in Hari."
Verse 11 (padma.5.19.11)
तत्कीर्तने तच्छ्रवणे वंदने तस्य पूजने । मतिरेव प्रकर्तव्या नान्यत्र वनितादिषु
tatkīrtane tacchravaṇe vaṁdane tasya pūjane matireva prakartavyā nānyatra vanitādiṣu
"One's mind should be fixed only on chanting his name, hearing of him, bowing to him, and worshipping him — nowhere else, not on wife or the rest."
Verse 12 (padma.5.19.12)
सर्वं नश्वरमालोक्य क्षणस्थायि सुदुःखदम् । जन्ममृत्युजरातीतं भक्तिवल्लभमच्युतम्
sarvaṁ naśvaramālokya kṣaṇasthāyi suduḥkhadam janmamṛtyujarātītaṁ bhaktivallabhamacyutam
"Seeing all things as perishable, lasting but an instant, bringing great sorrow, one should take refuge in the Unfallen One, beyond birth, death, and old age, beloved through devotion."
Verse 13 (padma.5.19.13)
क्रोधात्कामाद्भयाद्द्वेषाल्लोभाद्दंभान्नरः पुनः । यथाकथंचिद्विभजन्न स दुःखं समश्नुते
krodhātkāmādbhayāddveṣāllobhāddaṁbhānnaraḥ punaḥ yathākathaṁcidvibhajanna sa duḥkhaṁ samaśnute
"A man who, again and again, somehow separates himself from anger, desire, fear, hatred, and pride, does not experience sorrow."
Verse 14 (padma.5.19.14)
स हरिर्जायते साधुसंगमात्पापवर्जितात् । येषां कृपातः पुरुषा भवंत्यसुखवर्जिताः
sa harirjāyate sādhusaṁgamātpāpavarjitāt yeṣāṁ kṛpātaḥ puruṣā bhavaṁtyasukhavarjitāḥ
"That Hari is born from association with the good, free of sin — those by whose grace men become free of unhappiness."
Verse 15 (padma.5.19.15)
ते साधवः शांतरागाः कामलोभविवर्जिताः । ब्रुवंति यन्महाराज तत्संसारनिवर्तकम्
te sādhavaḥ śāṁtarāgāḥ kāmalobhavivarjitāḥ bruvaṁti yanmahārāja tatsaṁsāranivartakam
"Those good ones, their passions calmed, free of desire and greed, speak, great king, that which turns one back from the cycle of samsara."
Verse 16 (padma.5.19.16)
तीर्थेषु लभ्यते साधू रामचंद्र परायणः । यद्दर्शनं नृणां पापराशिदाहाशुशुक्षणिः
tīrtheṣu labhyate sādhū rāmacaṁdra parāyaṇaḥ yaddarśanaṁ nṛṇāṁ pāparāśidāhāśuśukṣaṇiḥ
"A good man devoted to Ramachandra is found at the sacred fords — the very sight of him is a fire that burns away men's mass of sin."
Verse 17 (padma.5.19.17)
तस्मात्तीर्थेषु गंतव्यं नरैः संसारभीरुभिः । पुण्योदकेषु सततं साधुश्रेणिविराजिषु
tasmāttīrtheṣu gaṁtavyaṁ naraiḥ saṁsārabhīrubhiḥ puṇyodakeṣu satataṁ sādhuśreṇivirājiṣu
"Therefore men who fear samsara should go to the sacred fords, ever resplendent with rows of the virtuous, at their holy waters."
Verse 18 (padma.5.19.18)
तानि तीर्थानि विधिना दृष्टानि प्रहरंत्यघम् । तं विधिं नृपशार्दूल कुरुष्व श्रुतिगोचरम्
tāni tīrthāni vidhinā dṛṣṭāni praharaṁtyagham taṁ vidhiṁ nṛpaśārdūla kuruṣva śrutigocaram
"Those sacred fords, seen according to proper rite, strike down sin. That rite, tiger among kings, make known to the scriptures."
Verse 19 (padma.5.19.19)
विरागं जनयेत्पूर्वं कलत्रादि कुटुंबके । असत्यभूतं तज्ज्ञात्वा हरिं तु मनसा स्मरेत्
virāgaṁ janayetpūrvaṁ kalatrādi kuṭuṁbake asatyabhūtaṁ tajjñātvā hariṁ tu manasā smaret
"One should first generate detachment toward one's wife and the rest of one's family, and, knowing them to be unreal, remember Hari in the mind."
Verse 20 (padma.5.19.20)
क्रोशमात्रं ततो गत्वा रामरामेति च ब्रुवन् । तत्र तीर्थादिषु स्नात्वा क्षौरं कुर्याद्विधानवित्
krośamātraṁ tato gatvā rāmarāmeti ca bruvan tatra tīrthādiṣu snātvā kṣauraṁ kuryādvidhānavit
"Then, having gone but a mile, chanting 'Rama, Rama,' one, versed in the rite, should bathe at the sacred fords there and have one's head shaved."
Verse 21 (padma.5.19.21)
मनुष्याणां च पापानि तीर्थानि प्रति गच्छताम् । केशानाश्रित्य तिष्ठंति तस्माद्वपनमाचरेत्
manuṣyāṇāṁ ca pāpāni tīrthāni prati gacchatām keśānāśritya tiṣṭhaṁti tasmādvapanamācaret
"The sins of men going toward sacred fords cling to their hair; therefore one should have it shaved."
Verse 22 (padma.5.19.22)
ततो दंडं तु निर्ग्रन्थिं कमंडलुमथाजिनम् । बिभृयाल्लोभनिर्मुक्तस्तीर्थवेषधरो नरः
tato daṁḍaṁ tu nirgranthiṁ kamaṁḍalumathājinam bibhṛyāllobhanirmuktastīrthaveṣadharo naraḥ
"Then, free from greed, a man wearing the garb of a pilgrim should bear a knotless staff, a water-pot, and a deerskin."
Verse 23 (padma.5.19.23)
विधिना गच्छतां नॄणां फलावाप्तिर्विशेषतः । तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन तीर्थयात्राविधिं चरेत्
vidhinā gacchatāṁ nṝṇāṁ phalāvāptirviśeṣataḥ tasmātsarvaprayatnena tīrthayātrāvidhiṁ caret
"For men who go by proper rite, the attainment of the fruit is especially great; therefore one should undertake the rite of pilgrimage with every effort."
Verse 24 (padma.5.19.24)
यस्य हस्तौ च पादौ च मनश्चैव सुसंहितम् । विद्या तपश्च कीर्तिश्च स तीर्थफलमश्नुते
yasya hastau ca pādau ca manaścaiva susaṁhitam vidyā tapaśca kīrtiśca sa tīrthaphalamaśnute
"One whose hands, feet, and mind are well restrained, and who has learning, austerity, and fame, obtains the fruit of pilgrimage."
Verse 25 (padma.5.19.25)
हरेकृष्ण हरेकृष्ण भक्तवत्सल गोपते । शरण्य भगवन्विष्णो मां पाहि बहुसंसृतेः
harekṛṣṇa harekṛṣṇa bhaktavatsala gopate śaraṇya bhagavanviṣṇo māṁ pāhi bahusaṁsṛteḥ
"'Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, beloved of your devotees, lord of cowherds, worthy of refuge, Lord Vishnu, protect me from this vast cycle of rebirth!'"
Verse 26 (padma.5.19.26)
इति ब्रुवन्रसनया मनसा च हरिं स्मरन् । पादचारी गतिं कुर्यात्तीर्थं प्रति महोदयः
iti bruvanrasanayā manasā ca hariṁ smaran pādacārī gatiṁ kuryāttīrthaṁ prati mahodayaḥ
"Thus speaking with the tongue, and remembering Hari in the mind, one of great prosperity should proceed on foot toward the sacred ford."
Verse 27 (padma.5.19.27)
यानेन गच्छन्पुरुषः समभागफलं लभेत् । उपानद्भ्यां चतुर्थांशं गोयाने गोवधादिकम्
yānena gacchanpuruṣaḥ samabhāgaphalaṁ labhet upānadbhyāṁ caturthāṁśaṁ goyāne govadhādikam
"A man going by vehicle obtains an equal share of the fruit; by sandals, a quarter; by a cattle-drawn cart, a fruit tainted by the sin of harm to cattle —"
Verse 28 (padma.5.19.28)
व्यवहर्ता तृतीयांशं सेवयाष्टमभागभाक् । अनिच्छया व्रजंस्तत्र तीर्थमर्धफलं लभेत्
vyavahartā tṛtīyāṁśaṁ sevayāṣṭamabhāgabhāk anicchayā vrajaṁstatra tīrthamardhaphalaṁ labhet
"One engaged in trade obtains a third; one who goes in another's service, an eighth part; one going there unwillingly obtains half the fruit of the pilgrimage."
Verse 29 (padma.5.19.29)
यथायथं प्रकर्तव्या तीर्थानामभियात्रिका । पापक्षयो भवत्येव विधिदृष्ट्या विशेषतः
yathāyathaṁ prakartavyā tīrthānāmabhiyātrikā pāpakṣayo bhavatyeva vidhidṛṣṭyā viśeṣataḥ
"The pilgrimage to sacred fords should be undertaken exactly as prescribed; the destruction of sin comes about especially through observing the proper rite."
Verse 30 (padma.5.19.30)
तत्र साधून्नमस्कुर्यात्पादवंदनसेवनैः । तद्द्वारा हरिभक्तिर्हि प्राप्यते पुरुषोत्तमे
tatra sādhūnnamaskuryātpādavaṁdanasevanaiḥ taddvārā haribhaktirhi prāpyate puruṣottame
"There one should bow to the good, by reverence and service at their feet; through that very means devotion to Hari is obtained at Purushottama."
Verse 31 (padma.5.19.31)
इति तीर्थविधिः प्रोक्तः समासेन न विस्तरात् । एवं विधिं समाश्रित्य गच्छ त्वं पुरुषोत्तमम्
iti tīrthavidhiḥ proktaḥ samāsena na vistarāt evaṁ vidhiṁ samāśritya gaccha tvaṁ puruṣottamam
"Thus the rite of pilgrimage has been told, in brief, not in full detail. Having taken up this rite, go now to Purushottama."
Verse 32 (padma.5.19.32)
तुभ्यं तुष्टो महाराज दास्यते भक्तिमच्युतः । यथा संसारनिर्वाहः क्षणादेव भविष्यति
tubhyaṁ tuṣṭo mahārāja dāsyate bhaktimacyutaḥ yathā saṁsāranirvāhaḥ kṣaṇādeva bhaviṣyati
"Pleased with you, great king, the Unfallen One will grant you devotion, such that the burden of samsara will end for you in an instant."
Verse 33 (padma.5.19.33)
तीर्थयात्राविधिं श्रुत्वा सर्वपातकनाशनम् । मुच्यते सर्वपापेभ्य उग्रेभ्यः पुरुषर्षभ
tīrthayātrāvidhiṁ śrutvā sarvapātakanāśanam mucyate sarvapāpebhya ugrebhyaḥ puruṣarṣabha
"Having heard this rite of pilgrimage, destroyer of every sin, one is freed, bull among men, from all the fiercest sins."
Verse 34 (padma.5.19.34)
सुमतिरुवाच । इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य ववंदे चरणौ महान् । तत्तीर्थदर्शनौत्सुक्य विह्वलीकृतमानसः
sumatiruvāca iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya vavaṁde caraṇau mahān tattīrthadarśanautsukya vihvalīkṛtamānasaḥ
Sumati said: Hearing this speech, that great king bowed at his feet, his mind overwhelmed with eagerness to behold that sacred place.
Verse 35 (padma.5.19.35)
आदिदेश निजामात्यं मंत्रवित्तममुत्तमम् । तीर्थयात्रेच्छया सर्वान्सह नेतुं मनो दधत्
ādideśa nijāmātyaṁ maṁtravittamamuttamam tīrthayātrecchayā sarvānsaha netuṁ mano dadhat
He commanded his own minister, most learned in counsel, finest of men, resolving in his mind to lead everyone along, out of his desire for pilgrimage —
Verse 36 (padma.5.19.36)
मंत्रिन्पौरजनान्सर्वानादिश त्वं ममाज्ञया । पुरुषोत्तमपादाब्जदर्शनप्रीतिहेतवे
maṁtrinpaurajanānsarvānādiśa tvaṁ mamājñayā puruṣottamapādābjadarśanaprītihetave
"Minister, at my command, instruct all the people of my city, for the sake of the joy of beholding the lotus feet of Purushottama."
Verse 37 (padma.5.19.37)
ये मदीये पुरे लोका ये च मद्वाक्यकारकाः । सर्वे निर्यांतु मत्पुर्या मया सह नरोत्तमाः
ye madīye pure lokā ye ca madvākyakārakāḥ sarve niryāṁtu matpuryā mayā saha narottamāḥ
"Whoever are the people of my city, and whoever obey my word — let all of them, finest of men, go forth from my city together with me."
Verse 38 (padma.5.19.38)
ये तु मद्वाक्यमुल्लंघ्य स्थास्यंति पुरुषा गृहे । ते दंड्या यमदंडेन पापिनोऽधर्महेतवः
ye tu madvākyamullaṁghya sthāsyaṁti puruṣā gṛhe te daṁḍyā yamadaṁḍena pāpino'dharmahetavaḥ
"But those men who, disregarding my word, remain at home — they are to be punished with Yama's own rod, sinners, causers of unrighteousness."
Verse 39 (padma.5.19.39)
किं तेन सुतवृंदेन बांधवैः किं सुदुर्नयैः । यैर्नदृष्टः स्वचक्षुर्भ्यां पुण्यदः पुरुषोत्तमः
kiṁ tena sutavṛṁdena bāṁdhavaiḥ kiṁ sudurnayaiḥ yairnadṛṣṭaḥ svacakṣurbhyāṁ puṇyadaḥ puruṣottamaḥ
"What use is that host of sons, what use are kinsmen, so wicked, to those who have not seen with their own eyes Purushottama, giver of merit?"
Verse 40 (padma.5.19.40)
सूकरीयूथवत्तेषां प्रसूतिर्विट्प्रभक्षिका । येषां पुत्राश्च पौत्रा वा हरिं न शरणं गताः
sūkarīyūthavatteṣāṁ prasūtirviṭprabhakṣikā yeṣāṁ putrāśca pautrā vā hariṁ na śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ
"Like the litter of a sow, whose offspring feeds only on filth, are the descendants of those whose sons and grandsons have not taken refuge in Hari."
Verse 41 (padma.5.19.41)
यो देवो नाममात्रेण सर्वान्पावयितुं क्षमः । तं नमस्कुरुत क्षिप्रं मदीयाः प्रकृतिव्रजाः
yo devo nāmamātreṇa sarvānpāvayituṁ kṣamaḥ taṁ namaskuruta kṣipraṁ madīyāḥ prakṛtivrajāḥ
"That god who, by his very name alone, is able to purify all — bow to him quickly, all you people, my own subjects."
Verse 42 (padma.5.19.42)
इति वाक्यं मनोहारि भगवद्गुणगुंफितम् । प्रजहर्ष महामात्य उत्तमः सत्यनामधृक्
iti vākyaṁ manohāri bhagavadguṇaguṁphitam prajaharṣa mahāmātya uttamaḥ satyanāmadhṛk
Hearing this delightful speech, woven through with the Lord's own virtues, that finest great minister, bearer of a truthful name, rejoiced greatly.
Verse 43 (padma.5.19.43)
हस्तिनं वरमारोप्य पटहेन व्यघोषयत् । यदादिष्टं नृपेणेह तीर्थयात्रां समिच्छता
hastinaṁ varamāropya paṭahena vyaghoṣayat yadādiṣṭaṁ nṛpeṇeha tīrthayātrāṁ samicchatā
Mounting a fine elephant, he proclaimed by drum-beat what the king, desiring pilgrimage, had commanded here —
Verse 44 (padma.5.19.44)
गच्छंतु त्वरिता लोका राज्ञा सह महागिरिम् । दृश्यतां पापसंहारी पुरुषोत्तमनामधृक्
gacchaṁtu tvaritā lokā rājñā saha mahāgirim dṛśyatāṁ pāpasaṁhārī puruṣottamanāmadhṛk
"Let the people go swiftly, together with the king, to the great mountain; let Purushottama, destroyer of sin, be beheld!"
Verse 45 (padma.5.19.45)
क्रियतां सर्वसंसारसागरो गोष्पदं पुनः । भूष्यतां शंखचक्रादिचिह्नैः स्वस्व तनुर्नरैः
kriyatāṁ sarvasaṁsārasāgaro goṣpadaṁ punaḥ bhūṣyatāṁ śaṁkhacakrādicihnaiḥ svasva tanurnaraiḥ
"Let the whole ocean of samsara be made once more a mere hoofprint's puddle; let every man adorn his own body with the marks of conch, discus, and the rest!"
Verse 46 (padma.5.19.46)
इत्यादिघोषयामास राज्ञादिष्टं यदद्भुतम् । सचिवो रघुनाथांघ्रि ध्याननिर्वारितश्रमः
ityādighoṣayāmāsa rājñādiṣṭaṁ yadadbhutam sacivo raghunāthāṁghri dhyānanirvāritaśramaḥ
Thus he proclaimed this wondrous command given by the king — that minister, his weariness dispelled by meditation on Raghunatha's feet.
Verse 47 (padma.5.19.47)
तच्छ्रुत्वा ताः प्रजाः सर्वा आनंदरससंप्लुताः । मनो दधुः स्वनिस्तारे पुरुषोत्तमदर्शनात्
tacchrutvā tāḥ prajāḥ sarvā ānaṁdarasasaṁplutāḥ mano dadhuḥ svanistāre puruṣottamadarśanāt
Hearing this, all those subjects, overflowing with the sentiment of bliss, resolved upon their own deliverance through the sight of Purushottama.
Verse 48 (padma.5.19.48)
निर्ययुर्ब्राह्मणास्तत्र शिष्यैः सह सुवेषिणः । आशिषं वरदानाढ्यां ददतो भूमिपं प्रति
niryayurbrāhmaṇāstatra śiṣyaiḥ saha suveṣiṇaḥ āśiṣaṁ varadānāḍhyāṁ dadato bhūmipaṁ prati
The brahmins went forth there, finely dressed, together with their disciples, bestowing blessings rich with boons upon the lord of the earth.
Verse 49 (padma.5.19.49)
क्षत्त्रिया धन्विनो वीरा वैश्या वस्तुक्रयाञ्चिताः । शूद्राः संसारनिस्तारहर्षित स्वीयविग्रहाः
kṣattriyā dhanvino vīrā vaiśyā vastukrayāñcitāḥ śūdrāḥ saṁsāranistāraharṣita svīyavigrahāḥ
Kshatriyas, bow-bearing heroes; vaishyas, engrossed in the trade of goods; shudras, their own bodies filled with joy at the crossing-over of samsara —
Verse 50 (padma.5.19.50)
रजकाश्चर्मकाः क्षौद्राः किराता भित्तिकारकाः । सूचीवृत्त्या च जीवंतस्तांबूलक्रयकारकाः
rajakāścarmakāḥ kṣaudrāḥ kirātā bhittikārakāḥ sūcīvṛttyā ca jīvaṁtastāṁbūlakrayakārakāḥ
washermen, leather-workers, honey-gatherers, forest-hunters, wall-builders, those living by the needle's trade, betel-sellers,
Verse 51 (padma.5.19.51)
तालवाद्यधरा ये च ये च रंगोपजीविनः । तैलविक्रयिणश्चैव वस्त्रविक्रयिणस्तथा
tālavādyadharā ye ca ye ca raṁgopajīvinaḥ tailavikrayiṇaścaiva vastravikrayiṇastathā
those bearing cymbals, and those who lived by the stage; sellers of oil, and likewise sellers of cloth —

सूता वदंतः पौराणीं वार्तां हर्षसमन्विताः । मागधा बंदिनस्तत्र निर्गता भूमिपाज्ञया
sūtā vadaṁtaḥ paurāṇīṁ vārtāṁ harṣasamanvitāḥ māgadhā baṁdinastatra nirgatā bhūmipājñayā
bards reciting the old tales, filled with joy; panegyrists and heralds — all went forth there at the king's command.
Verse 53 (padma.5.19.53)
भिषग्वृत्त्या च जीवंतस्तथा पाशककोविदाः । पाकस्वादुरसाभिज्ञा हास्यवाक्यानुरंजकाः
bhiṣagvṛttyā ca jīvaṁtastathā pāśakakovidāḥ pākasvādurasābhijñā hāsyavākyānuraṁjakāḥ
Those living by the physician's trade, and those skilled at dice; those expert in the flavors of cooking, and jesters delighting others with witty words —
Verse 54 (padma.5.19.54)
ऐंद्रजालिकविद्याध्रास्तथा वार्तासुकोविदाः । प्रशंसंतो महाराजं निर्ययुः पुरमध्यतः
aiṁdrajālikavidyādhrāstathā vārtāsukovidāḥ praśaṁsaṁto mahārājaṁ niryayuḥ puramadhyataḥ
sleight-of-hand performers, and those skilled at storytelling — praising the great king, they all went forth from the midst of the city.
Verse 55 (padma.5.19.55)
राजापि तत्र निर्वर्त्य प्रातःसंध्यादिकाः क्रियाः । ब्राह्मणं तापसश्रेष्ठमानिनाय सुनिर्मलम्
rājāpi tatra nirvartya prātaḥsaṁdhyādikāḥ kriyāḥ brāhmaṇaṁ tāpasaśreṣṭhamānināya sunirmalam
The king too, having completed his morning twilight rites, brought forward that finest, most spotless ascetic brahmin.
Verse 56 (padma.5.19.56)
तदाज्ञया महाराजो निर्जगाम पुराद्बहिः । लोकैरनुगतो राजा बभौ चंद्र इवोडुभिः
tadājñayā mahārājo nirjagāma purādbahiḥ lokairanugato rājā babhau caṁdra ivoḍubhiḥ
By his command the great king went forth from the city; followed by the people, the king shone like the moon amid the stars.
Verse 57 (padma.5.19.57)
क्रोशमात्रं स गत्वाथ क्षौरं कृत्वा विधानतः । दंडं कमंडलुं बिभ्रन्मृगचर्म तथा शुभम्
krośamātraṁ sa gatvātha kṣauraṁ kṛtvā vidhānataḥ daṁḍaṁ kamaṁḍaluṁ bibhranmṛgacarma tathā śubham
Having gone but a mile, having his head duly shaved, bearing a staff and water-pot and an auspicious deerskin,
Verse 58 (padma.5.19.58)
शुभवेषेण संयुक्तो हरिध्यानपरायणः । कामक्रोधादिरहितं मनो बिभ्रन्महायशाः
śubhaveṣeṇa saṁyukto haridhyānaparāyaṇaḥ kāmakrodhādirahitaṁ mano bibhranmahāyaśāḥ
clad in auspicious garb, devoted to meditation on Hari, his mind — that man of great fame — free of desire, anger, and the rest,
Verse 59 (padma.5.19.59)
तदा दुंदुभयो भेर्य आनकाः पणवास्तथा । शंखवीणादिकाश्चैवाध्मातास्तद्वादकैर्मुहुः
tadā duṁdubhayo bherya ānakāḥ paṇavāstathā śaṁkhavīṇādikāścaivādhmātāstadvādakairmuhuḥ
then kettledrums, tabors, war-drums, and cymbals, as well as conches, vinas, and other instruments, were blown again and again by their players.
Verse 60 (padma.5.19.60)
जय देवेश दुःखघ्न पुरुषोत्तमसंज्ञित । दर्शयस्व तनुं मह्यं वदंतो निर्ययुर्जनाः
jaya deveśa duḥkhaghna puruṣottamasaṁjñita darśayasva tanuṁ mahyaṁ vadaṁto niryayurjanāḥ
"Victory, lord of gods, destroyer of sorrow, named Purushottama! Show me your form!" — so saying, the people went forth.
