Verse 1 (padma.5.20.1)

सुमतिरुवाच। अथ प्रयाते भूपाले सर्वलोकसमन्विते । महाभागैर्वैष्णवैश्च गायकैः कृष्णकीर्तनम्

sumatiruvāca atha prayāte bhūpāle sarvalokasamanvite mahābhāgairvaiṣṇavaiśca gāyakaiḥ kṛṣṇakīrtanam

Sumati said: Then, as the king set out, together with all the people, with the great and fortunate Vaishnavas, and with singers chanting of Krishna —

Verse 2 (padma.5.20.2)

शुश्रावासौ महाराजो मार्गे गोविंदकीर्तनम् । जय माधव भक्तानां शरण्य पुरुषोत्तम

śuśrāvāsau mahārājo mārge goviṁdakīrtanam jaya mādhava bhaktānāṁ śaraṇya puruṣottama

that great king heard, along the way, the chanting of Govinda's praise: "Victory, Madhava, refuge of devotees, Purushottama!"

Verse 3 (padma.5.20.3)

मार्गे तीर्थान्यनेकानि कुर्वन्पश्यन्महोदयम् । तापसब्राह्मणात्तेषां महिमानमथा शृणोत्

mārge tīrthānyanekāni kurvanpaśyanmahodayam tāpasabrāhmaṇātteṣāṁ mahimānamathā śṛṇot

Along the way, visiting many sacred fords and witnessing their great glory, he then heard from an ascetic brahmin of their majesty.

Verse 4 (padma.5.20.4)

विचित्रविष्णुवार्ताभिर्विनोदितमना नृपः । मार्गेमार्गे महाविष्णुं गापयामास गायकान्

vicitraviṣṇuvārtābhirvinoditamanā nṛpaḥ mārgemārge mahāviṣṇuṁ gāpayāmāsa gāyakān

His mind delighted by wondrous accounts of Vishnu, the king had the singers sing of Mahavishnu at every stage of the road.

Verse 5 (padma.5.20.5)

दीनांधकृपणानां च पंगूनां वासनोचितम् । दानं ददौ महाराजो बुद्धिमान्विजितेंद्रियः

dīnāṁdhakṛpaṇānāṁ ca paṁgūnāṁ vāsanocitam dānaṁ dadau mahārājo buddhimānvijiteṁdriyaḥ

The wise king, his senses conquered, gave gifts fitting to the needs of the poor, the blind, the destitute, and the lame.

Verse 6 (padma.5.20.6)

अनेकतीर्थविरजमात्मानं भव्यतां गतम् । कुर्वन्ययौ स्वीयलोकैर्हरिध्यानपरायणः

anekatīrthavirajamātmānaṁ bhavyatāṁ gatam kurvanyayau svīyalokairharidhyānaparāyaṇaḥ

Making himself, through many sacred fords, spotless and fit for beatitude, he went on with his people, devoted to meditation on Hari.

Verse 7 (padma.5.20.7)

नृपो गच्छन्ददर्शाग्रे नदीं पापप्रणाशिनीम् । चक्रांकितग्रावयुतां मुनिमानस निर्मलाम्

nṛpo gacchandadarśāgre nadīṁ pāpapraṇāśinīm cakrāṁkitagrāvayutāṁ munimānasa nirmalām

Going on, the king saw ahead a river, destroyer of sin, its stones marked with the wheel, spotless as the very mind of sages,

Verse 8 (padma.5.20.8)

अनेकमुनिवृंदानां बहुश्रेणिविराजिताम् । सारसादिपतत्रीणां कूजितैरुपशोभिताम्

anekamunivṛṁdānāṁ bahuśreṇivirājitām sārasādipatatrīṇāṁ kūjitairupaśobhitām

resplendent with many rows of throngs of sages, beautified by the calls of cranes and other birds.

Verse 9 (padma.5.20.9)

दृष्ट्वा पप्रच्छ विप्राग्र्यं तापसं धर्मकोविदम् । अनेकतीर्थमाहात्म्य विशेषज्ञानजृंभितम्

dṛṣṭvā papraccha viprāgryaṁ tāpasaṁ dharmakovidam anekatīrthamāhātmya viśeṣajñānajṛṁbhitam

Seeing it, he asked that finest of brahmins, an ascetic learned in dharma, versed in the particular glories of many sacred fords —

Verse 10 (padma.5.20.10)

स्वामिन्केयं नदी पुण्या मुनिवृन्दनिषेविता । करोति मम चित्तस्य प्रमोदभरनिर्भरम्

svāminkeyaṁ nadī puṇyā munivṛndaniṣevitā karoti mama cittasya pramodabharanirbharam

"My lord, what is this holy river, served by throngs of sages, that fills my heart with an overflow of delight?"

Verse 11 (padma.5.20.11)

इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य राजराजस्य धीमतः । वक्तुं प्रचक्रमे विद्वांस्तीर्थमाहात्म्यमुत्तमम्

iti śrutvā vacastasya rājarājasya dhīmataḥ vaktuṁ pracakrame vidvāṁstīrthamāhātmyamuttamam

Hearing these words of that wise king of kings, the learned one began to tell the supreme glory of that sacred place.

Verse 12 (padma.5.20.12)

ब्राह्मण उवाच। गंडकीयं नदी राजन्सुरासुरनिषेविता । पुण्योदकपरीवाह हतपातकसंचया

brāhmaṇa uvāca gaṁḍakīyaṁ nadī rājansurāsuraniṣevitā puṇyodakaparīvāha hatapātakasaṁcayā

The brahmin said: "This river, O king, is the Gandaki, served by gods and demons, its holy waters a stream that destroys accumulated sin."

Verse 13 (padma.5.20.13)

दर्शनान्मानसं पापं स्पर्शनात्कर्मजं दहेत् । वाचिकं स्वीय तोयस्य पानतः पापसंचयम्

darśanānmānasaṁ pāpaṁ sparśanātkarmajaṁ dahet vācikaṁ svīya toyasya pānataḥ pāpasaṁcayam

"By the sight of it, mental sin is burnt; by touch, sin born of action; by speaking of it, verbal sin; by drinking its water, the accumulation of sin."

Verse 14 (padma.5.20.14)

पुरा दृष्ट्वा प्रजानाथः प्रजाः सर्वा विपावनीः । स्वगंडविप्रुषोनेक पापघ्नीं सृष्टवानिमाम्

purā dṛṣṭvā prajānāthaḥ prajāḥ sarvā vipāvanīḥ svagaṁḍavipruṣoneka pāpaghnīṁ sṛṣṭavānimām

"Of old the Lord of creatures, seeing all his subjects in need of purification, created this river, destroyer of countless sins, from the drops of his own cheek."

Verse 15 (padma.5.20.15)

एनां नदीं ये पुण्योदां स्पृशंति सुतरंगिणीम् । ते गर्भभाजो नैव स्युरपि पापकृतो नराः

enāṁ nadīṁ ye puṇyodāṁ spṛśaṁti sutaraṁgiṇīm te garbhabhājo naiva syurapi pāpakṛto narāḥ

"Those who touch this holy-watered, fine-flowing river will never again be subject to the womb, even if they are men who have committed sin."

Verse 16 (padma.5.20.16)

अस्यां भवा ये चाश्मानश्चक्रचिह्नैरलंकृताः । ते साक्षाद्भगवंतो हि स्वस्वरूपधराः पराः

asyāṁ bhavā ye cāśmānaścakracihnairalaṁkṛtāḥ te sākṣādbhagavaṁto hi svasvarūpadharāḥ parāḥ

"The stones born in it, adorned with the mark of the wheel, are the Lord himself, the Supreme, bearing his own very form."

Verse 17 (padma.5.20.17)

शिलां संपूजयेद्यस्तु नित्यं चक्रयुतां नरः । न जातु स जनन्या वै जठरं समुपाविशेत्

śilāṁ saṁpūjayedyastu nityaṁ cakrayutāṁ naraḥ na jātu sa jananyā vai jaṭharaṁ samupāviśet

"Whoever daily worships that wheel-marked stone shall never again enter a mother's womb."

Verse 18 (padma.5.20.18)

पूजयेद्यो नरो धीमाञ्छालग्रामशिलां वराम् । तेनाचारवता भाव्यं दंभलोभवियोगिना

pūjayedyo naro dhīmāñchālagrāmaśilāṁ varām tenācāravatā bhāvyaṁ daṁbhalobhaviyoginā

"The wise man who worships the finest shalagrama stone must be a man of good conduct, free of hypocrisy and greed,"

Verse 19 (padma.5.20.19)

परदार परद्रव्यविमुखेन नरेण हि । पूजनीयः प्रयत्नेन शालग्रामः सचक्रकः

paradāra paradravyavimukhena nareṇa hi pūjanīyaḥ prayatnena śālagrāmaḥ sacakrakaḥ

"averse to another's wife and another's wealth — such a man alone should, with effort, worship the shalagrama, marked with the wheel."

Verse 20 (padma.5.20.20)

द्वारवत्यां भवं चक्रं शिला वै गंडकीभवा । पुंसां क्षणाद्धरत्येव पापं जन्मशतार्जितम्

dvāravatyāṁ bhavaṁ cakraṁ śilā vai gaṁḍakībhavā puṁsāṁ kṣaṇāddharatyeva pāpaṁ janmaśatārjitam

"The wheel born at Dvaraka, and the stone born in the Gandaki — these instantly remove sin accumulated over a hundred lifetimes."

Verse 21 (padma.5.20.21)

अपि पापसहस्राणां कर्ता तावन्नरो भवेत् । शालग्रामशिलातोयं पीत्वा पूतो भवेत्क्षणात्

api pāpasahasrāṇāṁ kartā tāvannaro bhavet śālagrāmaśilātoyaṁ pītvā pūto bhavetkṣaṇāt

"Even one who has committed a thousand sins, upon drinking the water of the shalagrama stone, becomes pure in an instant."

Verse 22 (padma.5.20.22)

ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियो वैश्यः शूद्रो वेदपथि स्थितः । शालग्रामं पूजयित्वा गृहस्थो मोक्षमाप्नुयात्

brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyo vaiśyaḥ śūdro vedapathi sthitaḥ śālagrāmaṁ pūjayitvā gṛhastho mokṣamāpnuyāt

"A brahmin, kshatriya, vaishya, or shudra, established on the path of the Veda, worshipping the shalagrama as a householder, attains liberation."

Verse 23 (padma.5.20.23)

न जातु चित्स्त्रिया कार्यं शालग्रामस्य पूजनम् । भर्तृहीनाथ सुभगा स्वर्गलोकहितैषिणी

na jātu citstriyā kāryaṁ śālagrāmasya pūjanam bhartṛhīnātha subhagā svargalokahitaiṣiṇī

"A woman must never worship the shalagrama; unless she is without a husband, auspicious, and desirous of the welfare of the heavenly world —"

Verse 24 (padma.5.20.24)

मोहात्स्पृष्ट्वापि महिला जन्मशीलगुणान्विता । हित्वा पुण्यसमूहं सा सत्वरं नरकं व्रजेत्

mohātspṛṣṭvāpi mahilā janmaśīlaguṇānvitā hitvā puṇyasamūhaṁ sā satvaraṁ narakaṁ vrajet

"a woman, endowed with good birth, character, and virtue, who out of delusion even touches it, forsaking her store of merit, swiftly goes to hell."

Verse 25 (padma.5.20.25)

स्त्रीपाणिमुक्तपुष्पाणि शालग्रामशिलोपरि । पवेरधिकपातानि वदंति ब्राह्मणोत्तमाः

strīpāṇimuktapuṣpāṇi śālagrāmaśilopari paveradhikapātāni vadaṁti brāhmaṇottamāḥ

"Flowers released from a woman's hand upon the shalagrama stone — the finest brahmins say — fall as more grievous than the thunderbolt."

Verse 26 (padma.5.20.26)

चंदनं विषसंकाशं कुसुमं वज्रसंनिभम् । नैवेद्यं कालकूटाभं भवेद्भगवतः कृतम्

caṁdanaṁ viṣasaṁkāśaṁ kusumaṁ vajrasaṁnibham naivedyaṁ kālakūṭābhaṁ bhavedbhagavataḥ kṛtam

"Sandal-paste becomes like poison, a flower like a thunderbolt, and food offered to the Lord becomes like deadly poison, when made by her."

Verse 27 (padma.5.20.27)

तस्मात्सर्वात्मना त्याज्यं स्त्रिया स्पर्शः शिलोपरि । कुर्वती याति नरकं यावदिंद्राश्चतुर्दश

tasmātsarvātmanā tyājyaṁ striyā sparśaḥ śilopari kurvatī yāti narakaṁ yāvadiṁdrāścaturdaśa

"Therefore a woman's touch upon the stone must be avoided entirely; a woman doing so goes to hell for as long as fourteen Indras reign."

Verse 28 (padma.5.20.28)

अपि पापसमाचारो ब्रह्महत्यायुतोऽपि वा । शालग्रामशिलातोयं पीत्वा याति परां गतिम्

api pāpasamācāro brahmahatyāyuto'pi vā śālagrāmaśilātoyaṁ pītvā yāti parāṁ gatim

"Even one of sinful conduct, even one guilty of the killing of a brahmin, upon drinking the water of the shalagrama stone, attains the supreme destination."

Verse 29 (padma.5.20.29)

तुलसीचंदनं वारि शंखो घंटाथ चक्रकम् । शिला ताम्रस्य पात्रं तु विष्णोर्नामपदामृतम्

tulasīcaṁdanaṁ vāri śaṁkho ghaṁṭātha cakrakam śilā tāmrasya pātraṁ tu viṣṇornāmapadāmṛtam

"Tulasi, sandal, water, the conch, the bell, and the wheel; the stone, and a copper vessel — these are the very nectar of Vishnu's name and feet."

Verse 30 (padma.5.20.30)

पदामृतं तु नवभिः पापराशिप्रदाहकम् । वदंति मुनयः शांताः सर्वशास्त्रार्थकोविदाः

padāmṛtaṁ tu navabhiḥ pāparāśipradāhakam vadaṁti munayaḥ śāṁtāḥ sarvaśāstrārthakovidāḥ

"The nectar of his feet, the calm sages, learned in the meaning of every scripture, say, burns away a mass of sin ninefold."

Verse 31 (padma.5.20.31)

सर्वतीर्थपरिस्नानात्सर्वक्रतुसमर्चनात् । पुण्यं भवति यद्राजन्बिंदौ बिंदौ तदद्भुतम्

sarvatīrthaparisnānātsarvakratusamarcanāt puṇyaṁ bhavati yadrājanbiṁdau biṁdau tadadbhutam

"The merit that comes, O king, from bathing at every sacred ford and worshipping at every sacrifice — that same merit is found, wondrously, in every single drop here."

Verse 32 (padma.5.20.32)

शालग्रामशिला यत्र पूज्यते पुरुषोत्तमैः । तत्र योजनमात्रं तु तीर्थकोटिसमन्वितम्

śālagrāmaśilā yatra pūjyate puruṣottamaiḥ tatra yojanamātraṁ tu tīrthakoṭisamanvitam

"Where a shalagrama stone is worshipped by the finest of men, there, within the space of a single yojana, ten million sacred fords are present."

Verse 33 (padma.5.20.33)

शालग्रामाः समाः पूज्याः समेषु द्वितयं नहि । विषमा एव संपूज्या विषमेषु त्रयं नहि

śālagrāmāḥ samāḥ pūjyāḥ sameṣu dvitayaṁ nahi viṣamā eva saṁpūjyā viṣameṣu trayaṁ nahi

"Shalagramas of even number are to be worshipped; among even ones, never two together; odd ones alone are to be worshipped; among odd ones, never three together."

Verse 34 (padma.5.20.34)

द्वारावती भवं चक्रं तथा वै गंडकीभवम् । उभयोः संगमो यत्र तत्र गंगा समुद्रगा

dvārāvatī bhavaṁ cakraṁ tathā vai gaṁḍakībhavam ubhayoḥ saṁgamo yatra tatra gaṁgā samudragā

"The wheel born at Dvaravati, and likewise that born in the Gandaki — where the two meet, there is the sea-bound Ganga herself."

Verse 35 (padma.5.20.35)

रूक्षाः कुर्वंति पुरुषा नायुः श्रीबलवर्जितान् । तस्मात्स्निग्धा मनोहारि रूपिण्यो ददति श्रियम्

rūkṣāḥ kurvaṁti puruṣā nāyuḥ śrībalavarjitān tasmātsnigdhā manohāri rūpiṇyo dadati śriyam

"Rough, harsh things make men devoid of long life, glory, and strength; therefore smooth, lovely, well-formed things grant prosperity."

Verse 36 (padma.5.20.36)

आयुष्कामो नरो यस्तु धनकामो हि यः पुमान् । पूजयन्सर्वमाप्नोति पारलौकिकमैहिकम्

āyuṣkāmo naro yastu dhanakāmo hi yaḥ pumān pūjayansarvamāpnoti pāralaukikamaihikam

"A man desiring long life, or one desiring wealth, by worshipping obtains everything, both of the other world and of this one."

Verse 37 (padma.5.20.37)

प्राणांतकाले पुंसस्तु भवेद्भाग्यवतो नृप । वाचि नाम हरेः पुण्यं शिला हृदि तदंतिके

prāṇāṁtakāle puṁsastu bhavedbhāgyavato nṛpa vāci nāma hareḥ puṇyaṁ śilā hṛdi tadaṁtike

"At the hour of death, O king, for a fortunate man, the holy name of Hari is on his tongue, the stone near his heart —"

Verse 38 (padma.5.20.38)

गच्छत्सु प्राणमार्गेषु यस्य विश्रंभतोऽपि चेत् । शालग्रामशिला स्फूर्तिस्तस्य मुक्तिर्न संशयः

gacchatsu prāṇamārgeṣu yasya viśraṁbhato'pi cet śālagrāmaśilā sphūrtistasya muktirna saṁśayaḥ

"as the paths of the breath depart, if even through simple trust the shalagrama stone flashes before him, his liberation is beyond doubt."

Verse 39 (padma.5.20.39)

पुरा भगवता प्रोक्तमंबरीषाय धीमते । ब्राह्मणा न्यासिनः स्निग्धाः शालग्रामशिलास्तथा

purā bhagavatā proktamaṁbarīṣāya dhīmate brāhmaṇā nyāsinaḥ snigdhāḥ śālagrāmaśilāstathā

"Of old the Lord himself declared to wise Ambarisha: brahmins devoted to renunciation, and gentle shalagrama stones —"

Verse 40 (padma.5.20.40)

स्वरूपत्रितयं मह्यमेतद्धि क्षितिमंडले । पापिनां पापनिर्हारं कर्तुं धृतमुदं च ता

svarūpatritayaṁ mahyametaddhi kṣitimaṁḍale pāpināṁ pāpanirhāraṁ kartuṁ dhṛtamudaṁ ca tā

"these three forms of mine, upon this earth, exist, joyfully committed to the removal of sinners' sin."

Verse 41 (padma.5.20.41)

निंदंति पापिनो ये वा शालग्रामशिलां सकृत् । कुंभीपाके पचंत्याशु यावदाभूतसंप्लवम्

niṁdaṁti pāpino ye vā śālagrāmaśilāṁ sakṛt kuṁbhīpāke pacaṁtyāśu yāvadābhūtasaṁplavam

"Those sinners who even once revile the shalagrama stone are cooked at once in Kumbhipaka, until the dissolution of all creation."

Verse 42 (padma.5.20.42)

पूजां समुद्यतं कर्तुं यो वारयति मूढधीः । तस्य मातापिताबंधुवर्गा नरकभागिनः

pūjāṁ samudyataṁ kartuṁ yo vārayati mūḍhadhīḥ tasya mātāpitābaṁdhuvargā narakabhāginaḥ

"One of deluded mind who obstructs another's undertaking of worship — his mother, father, and family members become sharers in hell."

Verse 43 (padma.5.20.43)

यो वा कथयति प्रेष्ठं शालग्रामार्चनं कुरु । सकृतार्थो नयत्याशु वैकुंठं स्वस्य पूर्वजान्

yo vā kathayati preṣṭhaṁ śālagrāmārcanaṁ kuru sakṛtārtho nayatyāśu vaikuṁṭhaṁ svasya pūrvajān

"But one who, out of affection, says, 'Worship the shalagrama' — he swiftly leads his own ancestors to Vaikuntha, his purpose fulfilled."

Verse 44 (padma.5.20.44)

अत्रैवोदाहरंतीममितिहासं पुरातनम् । मुनयो वीतरागाश्च कामक्रोधविवर्जिताः

atraivodāharaṁtīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam munayo vītarāgāśca kāmakrodhavivarjitāḥ

"Here too the sages, free of passion, free of desire and anger, tell this ancient story —"

Verse 45 (padma.5.20.45)

पुरा कीकटसंज्ञे वै देशे धर्मविवर्जिते । आसीत्पुल्कसजातीयो नरः शबरसंज्ञितः

purā kīkaṭasaṁjñe vai deśe dharmavivarjite āsītpulkasajātīyo naraḥ śabarasaṁjñitaḥ

"Long ago, in a land called Kikata, devoid of dharma, there lived a man of the Pulkasa caste, called a Shabara,"

Verse 46 (padma.5.20.46)

नित्यं जंतुवधोद्युक्तः शरासनधरो मुहुः । तीर्थं प्रति यियासूनां बलाद्धरति जीवितम्

nityaṁ jaṁtuvadhodyuktaḥ śarāsanadharo muhuḥ tīrthaṁ prati yiyāsūnāṁ balāddharati jīvitam

"ever engaged in the killing of creatures, bow in hand, repeatedly by force taking the lives of those wishing to go on pilgrimage to sacred fords."

Verse 47 (padma.5.20.47)

अनेकप्राणिहत्याकृत्परस्वे निरतः सदा । सदा रागादिसंयुक्तः कामक्रोधादिसंयुतः

anekaprāṇihatyākṛtparasve nirataḥ sadā sadā rāgādisaṁyuktaḥ kāmakrodhādisaṁyutaḥ

"A killer of many living beings, ever devoted to others' property, ever filled with passion and the like, joined with desire, anger, and their kin,"

Verse 48 (padma.5.20.48)

विचरत्यनिशं भीमे वने प्राणिवधंकरः । विषसंसक्तबाणाग्र रूढचापगुणोद्धुरः

vicaratyaniśaṁ bhīme vane prāṇivadhaṁkaraḥ viṣasaṁsaktabāṇāgra rūḍhacāpaguṇoddhuraḥ

"he wandered ceaselessly in a fearsome forest, a killer of creatures, his poison-tipped arrows fitted, his bowstring drawn taut."

Verse 49 (padma.5.20.49)

सैकदा पर्यटन्व्याधः प्राणिमात्रभयंकरः । कालं प्राप्तं न जानाति समीपेऽप्युग्रमानसः

saikadā paryaṭanvyādhaḥ prāṇimātrabhayaṁkaraḥ kālaṁ prāptaṁ na jānāti samīpe'pyugramānasaḥ

"Once, that hunter, roaming, a terror to every living thing, did not know that his own time had come, though it was near, his mind fierce."

Verse 50 (padma.5.20.50)

यमदूतास्तु संप्राप्ताः पाशमुद्गरपाणयः । ताम्रकेशा दीर्घनखा लंबदंष्ट्रा भयानकाः

yamadūtāstu saṁprāptāḥ pāśamudgarapāṇayaḥ tāmrakeśā dīrghanakhā laṁbadaṁṣṭrā bhayānakāḥ

"Then Yama's messengers arrived, noose and mace in hand, copper-haired, long-nailed, their fangs hanging down, fearsome,"

Verse 51 (padma.5.20.51)

श्यामा लोहस्यनिगडान्बिभ्रतो मोहकारकाः । बध्नंतु पापिनं ह्येनं प्राणिमात्रभयंकरम्

śyāmā lohasyanigaḍānbibhrato mohakārakāḥ badhnaṁtu pāpinaṁ hyenaṁ prāṇimātrabhayaṁkaram

"dark, bearing iron shackles, bewildering to see: 'Let us bind this sinner, terror to every living thing!'"

Verse 52 (padma.5.20.52)

कदाचिन्मनसा नायं प्राणिमात्रोपकारकः । परदार परद्रव्य परद्रोहपरायणः

kadācinmanasā nāyaṁ prāṇimātropakārakaḥ paradāra paradravya paradrohaparāyaṇaḥ

"'Never once, even in his mind, has he been a benefactor to any living being; devoted to another's wife, another's wealth, and another's harm."

Verse 53 (padma.5.20.53)

एतस्य जिह्वां महतीमहं निष्कासयाम्यतः । एको वदति चैतस्य चक्षुरुत्पाटयाम्यहम्

etasya jihvāṁ mahatīmahaṁ niṣkāsayāmyataḥ eko vadati caitasya cakṣurutpāṭayāmyaham

"'His great tongue I shall tear out for this,' said one; 'his eyes I shall gouge out,' said another;"

Verse 54 (padma.5.20.54)

एको वदति चैतस्य करौ कृंतामि पापिनः । अन्यो वदत्यहं कर्णौ कर्तयामि दुरात्मनः

eko vadati caitasya karau kṛṁtāmi pāpinaḥ anyo vadatyahaṁ karṇau kartayāmi durātmanaḥ

"'his hands I shall sever, this sinner,' said one; another said, 'I shall cut off his ears, that evil-souled one.'"

Verse 55 (padma.5.20.55)

एवं वदंतः सुभृशं दन्तैर्दन्तनिपीडकाः । आगत्य तं दुरात्मानं सायुधास्तस्थुरुन्मदाः

evaṁ vadaṁtaḥ subhṛśaṁ dantairdantanipīḍakāḥ āgatya taṁ durātmānaṁ sāyudhāstasthurunmadāḥ

"Speaking thus, grinding their teeth fiercely, they came to that evil-souled man, weapons in hand, frenzied."

Verse 56 (padma.5.20.56)

एको दूतस्तदा सर्परूपं धृत्वादशत्पदे । स दष्टमात्रः सहसा गतासुः पर्यजायत

eko dūtastadā sarparūpaṁ dhṛtvādaśatpade sa daṣṭamātraḥ sahasā gatāsuḥ paryajāyata

"One messenger then, taking the form of a serpent, bit him at his foot; bitten just once, he suddenly became lifeless."

Verse 57 (padma.5.20.57)

तदा तं लोहपाशेन बद्ध्वा ते यमकिंकराः । कशाभिस्ताडयामासुर्मुद्गरैः प्राहरन्क्रुधा

tadā taṁ lohapāśena baddhvā te yamakiṁkarāḥ kaśābhistāḍayāmāsurmudgaraiḥ prāharankrudhā

"Then, having bound him with an iron noose, those servants of Yama struck him with whips, and beat him with maces in fury —"

Verse 58 (padma.5.20.58)

अहो दुष्ट दुरात्मंस्त्वं कदाचिन्नाचरः शुभम् । मनसापि यतस्त्वां वै क्षेप्स्यामो रौरवेषु च

aho duṣṭa durātmaṁstvaṁ kadācinnācaraḥ śubham manasāpi yatastvāṁ vai kṣepsyāmo rauraveṣu ca

"'Ah, wicked, evil-souled one! You never once did any good, not even in thought; therefore we shall now cast you into the Raurava hells!"

Verse 59 (padma.5.20.59)

त्वङ्मांसं वायसा रौद्रा भक्षयिष्यंति वै क्रुधा । आजन्मतस्तु भवता न कृतं हरिसेवनम्

tvaṅmāṁsaṁ vāyasā raudrā bhakṣayiṣyaṁti vai krudhā ājanmatastu bhavatā na kṛtaṁ harisevanam

"'Fierce crows shall eat your skin and flesh in anger; from birth you never performed the service of Hari."

Verse 60 (padma.5.20.60)

त्वया कलत्रपुत्राद्या द्रोहं कृत्वा सुपोषिताः । न कदाचित्स्मृतो देवः पापहारी जनार्दनः

tvayā kalatraputrādyā drohaṁ kṛtvā supoṣitāḥ na kadācitsmṛto devaḥ pāpahārī janārdanaḥ

"'Having harmed and yet well nourished your wife, sons, and the rest, you never once remembered the god Janardana, remover of sin."

Verse 61 (padma.5.20.61)

तस्मात्त्वां लोहशंकौ वा कुंभीपाके च रौरवे । धर्मराजाज्ञया सर्वे नेष्यामो बहुताडनैः

tasmāttvāṁ lohaśaṁkau vā kuṁbhīpāke ca raurave dharmarājājñayā sarve neṣyāmo bahutāḍanaiḥ

"'Therefore, by the command of the King of Dharma, we shall all lead you, with much beating, into the iron spike, or into Kumbhipaka, or into Raurava.'"

Verse 62 (padma.5.20.62)

एवमुक्त्वा यदानेतुं समैच्छन्यमकिंकराः । तावत्प्राप्तो महाविष्णुचरणाब्जपरायणः

evamuktvā yadānetuṁ samaicchanyamakiṁkarāḥ tāvatprāpto mahāviṣṇucaraṇābjaparāyaṇaḥ

"Having said this, as Yama's servants were about to take him, then there arrived one devoted to the lotus feet of great Vishnu."

Verse 63 (padma.5.20.63)

यमदूतास्तदा दृष्टा वैष्णवेन महात्मना । पाशमुद्गरदंडादिदुष्टायुधधरा गणाः

yamadūtāstadā dṛṣṭā vaiṣṇavena mahātmanā pāśamudgaradaṁḍādiduṣṭāyudhadharā gaṇāḥ

"Yama's messengers were then seen by that great Vaishnava soul — troops bearing noose, mace, and staff, and other evil weapons —"

Verse 64 (padma.5.20.64)

पुल्कसं लोहनिगडैर्बद्ध्वा यातुं समुद्यताः । बन्ध बन्ध ग्रसच्छिन्धि भिन्धि भिन्धीति वादिनः

pulkasaṁ lohanigaḍairbaddhvā yātuṁ samudyatāḥ bandha bandha grasacchindhi bhindhi bhindhīti vādinaḥ

"preparing to lead away the Pulkasa, having bound him with iron shackles, saying: 'Bind him, bind him! Seize, cut, tear, tear him apart!'"

Verse 65 (padma.5.20.65)

तदा कृपालुस्तं प्रेक्ष्य पद्मनाभपरायणः । अत्यंतकृपयायुक्तं चेतस्तत्र तदाकरोत्

tadā kṛpālustaṁ prekṣya padmanābhaparāyaṇaḥ atyaṁtakṛpayāyuktaṁ cetastatra tadākarot

"Then that compassionate one, devoted to the lotus-naveled Lord, seeing him, his heart filled there with the utmost compassion —"

Verse 66 (padma.5.20.66)

असौ महादुष्ट पीडां मा यातु मम सन्निधौ । मोचयाम्यहमद्यैव यमदूतेभ्य एव च

asau mahāduṣṭa pīḍāṁ mā yātu mama sannidhau mocayāmyahamadyaiva yamadūtebhya eva ca

"'Let this great sinner not suffer torment in my very presence. I shall free him this very moment, from Yama's messengers themselves.'"

Verse 67 (padma.5.20.67)

इति कृत्वा मतिं तस्मिन्कृपायुक्तो मुनीश्वरः । शालग्रामशिलां हस्ते गृहीत्वास्य गतोंऽतिके

iti kṛtvā matiṁ tasminkṛpāyukto munīśvaraḥ śālagrāmaśilāṁ haste gṛhītvāsya gatoṁ'tike

"Having resolved thus, that compassionate lord of sages, taking a shalagrama stone in his hand, went near him."

Verse 68 (padma.5.20.68)

तस्य पादोदकं पुण्यं तुलसीदलमिश्रितम् । मुखे विनिक्षिपन्कर्णे रामनाम जजाप ह

tasya pādodakaṁ puṇyaṁ tulasīdalamiśritam mukhe vinikṣipankarṇe rāmanāma jajāpa ha

"Placing the holy water from his own feet, mixed with a tulasi leaf, into his mouth, he recited the name of Rama into his ear."

Verse 69 (padma.5.20.69)

तुलसीं मस्तके तस्य धारयामास वैष्णवः । शिलां हृदि महाविष्णोर्धृत्वा प्राह स वैष्णवः

tulasīṁ mastake tasya dhārayāmāsa vaiṣṇavaḥ śilāṁ hṛdi mahāviṣṇordhṛtvā prāha sa vaiṣṇavaḥ

"The Vaishnava placed tulasi upon his head; holding the stone of Mahavishnu to his heart, that Vaishnava said —"

Verse 70 (padma.5.20.70)

गच्छंतु यमदूता वै यातनासु परायणाः । शालग्रामशिलास्पर्शो दहतात्पातकं महत्

gacchaṁtu yamadūtā vai yātanāsu parāyaṇāḥ śālagrāmaśilāsparśo dahatātpātakaṁ mahat

"'Go now, messengers of Yama, intent on inflicting torment; let the touch of the shalagrama stone burn away this great sin!'"

Verse 71 (padma.5.20.71)

इत्युक्तवति तस्मिन्वै गणा विष्णोर्महाद्भुताः । आययुस्तस्य सविधे शिलास्पर्शाद्गतांहसः

ityuktavati tasminvai gaṇā viṣṇormahādbhutāḥ āyayustasya savidhe śilāsparśādgatāṁhasaḥ

"As he spoke thus, the wondrous attendants of Vishnu came near him, his sins departed by the touch of the stone."

Verse 72 (padma.5.20.72)

पीतवस्त्राः शंखचक्रगदापद्मविराजिताः । आगत्य मोचयामासुर्लोहपाशाद्दुरासदात्

pītavastrāḥ śaṁkhacakragadāpadmavirājitāḥ āgatya mocayāmāsurlohapāśāddurāsadāt

"Clad in yellow garments, resplendent with conch, discus, mace, and lotus, they came and freed him from that fearsome iron noose."

Verse 73 (padma.5.20.73)

मोचयित्वा महापापकारकं पुल्कसं नरम् । ऊचुः किमर्थं बद्धोऽयं वैष्णवः पूज्यदेहभृत्

mocayitvā mahāpāpakārakaṁ pulkasaṁ naram ūcuḥ kimarthaṁ baddho'yaṁ vaiṣṇavaḥ pūjyadehabhṛt

"Having freed that man, the Pulkasa, doer of great sin, they said: 'Why has this Vaishnava, bearer of a worshipful body, been bound?"

Verse 74 (padma.5.20.74)

कस्याज्ञाकारका यूयं यदधर्मप्रकारकाः । मुंचंतु वैष्णवं त्वेनं किमर्थं विधृतो ह्ययम्

kasyājñākārakā yūyaṁ yadadharmaprakārakāḥ muṁcaṁtu vaiṣṇavaṁ tvenaṁ kimarthaṁ vidhṛto hyayam

"'Whose command do you carry out, that you act so unrighteously? Release this Vaishnava — why has he been seized?'"

Verse 75 (padma.5.20.75)

इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य जगदुर्यमकिंकराः । धर्मराजाज्ञया प्राप्ता नेतुं पापिनमुद्यताः

iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya jagaduryamakiṁkarāḥ dharmarājājñayā prāptā netuṁ pāpinamudyatāḥ

"Hearing these words, Yama's messengers said: 'We came at the command of the King of Dharma, ready to lead away this sinner."

Verse 76 (padma.5.20.76)

नासौ कदाचिन्मनसा प्राणिमात्रोपकारकः । प्राणिहत्या महापापकारी दुष्टशरीरभृत्

nāsau kadācinmanasā prāṇimātropakārakaḥ prāṇihatyā mahāpāpakārī duṣṭaśarīrabhṛt

"'He was never once, even in mind, a benefactor to any living being; a great killer of creatures, doer of great sin, bearing a wicked body."

Verse 77 (padma.5.20.77)

नॄन्बहूंस्तीर्थयात्रायां गच्छतोऽसौ व्यलुंठयत् । परदाररतो नित्यं सर्वपापाधिकारकः

nṝnbahūṁstīrthayātrāyāṁ gacchato'sau vyaluṁṭhayat paradārarato nityaṁ sarvapāpādhikārakaḥ

"'He robbed many men going on pilgrimage; ever devoted to others' wives, master of every sin."

Verse 78 (padma.5.20.78)

तस्मान्नेतुं वयं प्राप्ताः पापिनं पुल्कसं नरम् । भवद्भिर्मोचितः कस्मादकस्मादागतैर्भटैः

tasmānnetuṁ vayaṁ prāptāḥ pāpinaṁ pulkasaṁ naram bhavadbhirmocitaḥ kasmādakasmādāgatairbhaṭaiḥ

"'We came, therefore, to lead away this sinful Pulkasa man — for what reason has he been freed by you warriors, who have arrived out of nowhere?'"

Verse 79 (padma.5.20.79)

विष्णुदूता ऊचुः। ब्रह्महत्यादिकं पापं प्राणिकोटिवधोद्भवम् । शालग्रामशिलास्पर्शः सर्वं दहति तत्क्षणात्

viṣṇudūtā ūcuḥ brahmahatyādikaṁ pāpaṁ prāṇikoṭivadhodbhavam śālagrāmaśilāsparśaḥ sarvaṁ dahati tatkṣaṇāt

"The messengers of Vishnu said: 'The sin of slaying a brahmin and the like, born of the killing of millions of creatures — the touch of the shalagrama stone burns all of it away in that very instant."

Verse 80 (padma.5.20.80)

रामेति नाम यच्छ्रोत्रे विश्रंभादागतं यदि । करोति पापसंदाहं तूलं वह्निकणो यथा

rāmeti nāma yacchrotre viśraṁbhādāgataṁ yadi karoti pāpasaṁdāhaṁ tūlaṁ vahnikaṇo yathā

"'If the name "Rama" reaches the ear even by mere chance, it burns away sin as a spark of fire burns cotton."

Verse 81 (padma.5.20.81)

तुलसी मस्तके यस्य शिला हृदि मनोहरा । मुखे कर्णेऽथवा राम नाम मुक्तस्तदैव सः

tulasī mastake yasya śilā hṛdi manoharā mukhe karṇe'thavā rāma nāma muktastadaiva saḥ

"'One who bears tulasi on his head, the lovely stone at his heart, and the name Rama on his mouth or in his ear — he is freed at that very instant."

Verse 82 (padma.5.20.82)

तस्मादनेन तुलसी मस्तके विधृता पुरा । श्रावितं रामनामाशु शिला हृदि सुधारिता

tasmādanena tulasī mastake vidhṛtā purā śrāvitaṁ rāmanāmāśu śilā hṛdi sudhāritā

"'Therefore, since tulasi was placed on his head, the name of Rama made to reach his ear, and the stone duly held to his heart —"

Verse 83 (padma.5.20.83)

तस्मात्पापसमूहोऽस्य दग्धः पुण्यकलेवरः । यास्यते परमं स्थानं पापिनां यत्सुदुर्ल्लभम्

tasmātpāpasamūho'sya dagdhaḥ puṇyakalevaraḥ yāsyate paramaṁ sthānaṁ pāpināṁ yatsudurllabham

"'his mass of sin has been burnt away; his body has become meritorious; he shall go to that supreme place, so hard to attain for sinners."

Verse 84 (padma.5.20.84)

वर्षायुतं तत्र भुक्त्वा भोगान्सर्वमनोहरान् । भारते जन्म संप्राप्य समाराध्य जगद्गुरुम्

varṣāyutaṁ tatra bhuktvā bhogānsarvamanoharān bhārate janma saṁprāpya samārādhya jagadgurum

"'Having enjoyed there, for ten thousand years, every delightful pleasure, he shall obtain birth in Bharata, and, having worshipped the guru of the world,"

Verse 85 (padma.5.20.85)

प्राप्स्यते परमं स्थानं सुरासुरसुदुर्ल्लभम् । न ज्ञातो महिमा सम्यक्छिलायाः परमेष्ठिनः

prāpsyate paramaṁ sthānaṁ surāsurasudurllabham na jñāto mahimā samyakchilāyāḥ parameṣṭhinaḥ

"'he shall attain that supreme abode, most hard to attain even for gods and demons. The full glory of this stone of the Supreme Lord is not truly known —"

Verse 86 (padma.5.20.86)

दृष्टा स्पृष्टार्चिता वापि सर्वपापहरा क्षणात् । इत्युक्त्वा विरताः सर्वे महाविष्णोर्गणा मुदा

dṛṣṭā spṛṣṭārcitā vāpi sarvapāpaharā kṣaṇāt ityuktvā viratāḥ sarve mahāviṣṇorgaṇā mudā

"'whether seen, touched, or worshipped, it removes all sin in an instant.' Having said this, all the attendants of Mahavishnu, joyfully, departed."

Verse 87 (padma.5.20.87)

याम्यास्ते किंकरा राज्ञे कथयामासुरद्भुतम् । वैष्णवो हर्षमापेदे रघुनाथपरायणः

yāmyāste kiṁkarā rājñe kathayāmāsuradbhutam vaiṣṇavo harṣamāpede raghunāthaparāyaṇaḥ

"Yama's servants told the king this wondrous thing; that Vaishnava, devoted to Raghunatha, was filled with joy."

Verse 88 (padma.5.20.88)

मुक्तोऽसौ यमपाशाच्च गमिष्यति परं पदम् । तदाजगाम विमलं किंकिणीजालमंडितम्

mukto'sau yamapāśācca gamiṣyati paraṁ padam tadājagāma vimalaṁ kiṁkiṇījālamaṁḍitam

"'He is freed from Yama's noose, and shall go to the supreme abode.' Then there arrived a spotless chariot, adorned with a network of little bells,"

Verse 89 (padma.5.20.89)

विमानं देवलोकात्तु मनोहारि महाद्भुतम् । तत्रारुह्य गतः स्वर्गं महापुण्यैर्निषेवितम्

vimānaṁ devalokāttu manohāri mahādbhutam tatrāruhya gataḥ svargaṁ mahāpuṇyairniṣevitam

"a lovely, most wondrous celestial vehicle from the world of the gods; mounting it, he went to heaven, attended by great merit."

Verse 90 (padma.5.20.90)

भोगान्भुक्त्वा स विपुलानाजगाम महीतलम् । काश्यां जन्म समासाद्य शुचिवाडवसत्कुले

bhogānbhuktvā sa vipulānājagāma mahītalam kāśyāṁ janma samāsādya śucivāḍavasatkule

"Having enjoyed abundant pleasures there, he came again to the surface of the earth, obtaining birth in Kashi, in a pure and excellent brahmin family —"

Verse 91 (padma.5.20.91)

आराध्य जगतामीशं गतवान्परमं पदम् । स पापी साधुसंगत्या शालग्रामशिलां स्पृशन्

ārādhya jagatāmīśaṁ gatavānparamaṁ padam sa pāpī sādhusaṁgatyā śālagrāmaśilāṁ spṛśan

"having worshipped the Lord of the worlds, he attained the supreme abode. That sinner, through the company of the good, by touching the shalagrama stone,"

Verse 92 (padma.5.20.92)

महापीडाविनिर्मुक्तो गतवान्परमं पदम् । मया तेऽभिहितं राजन्गंडकीचरितं महत्

mahāpīḍāvinirmukto gatavānparamaṁ padam mayā te'bhihitaṁ rājangaṁḍakīcaritaṁ mahat

"freed from great torment, attained the supreme abode. I have told you, O king, this great account of the Gandaki's glory."

श्रुत्वा विमुच्यते पापैर्भुक्तिं मुक्तिं च विंदति

śrutvā vimucyate pāpairbhuktiṁ muktiṁ ca viṁdati

"One who hears it is freed from sins, and obtains both worldly enjoyment and liberation."
