Description of Nilagiri's Glory
Verse 1 (padma.5.22.1)
सुमतिरुवाच। अथ सर्वं दिनं नीत्वा हरिस्मरणकीर्तनैः । रात्रौ सुष्वाप गंगाया रोधस्युरुफलप्रदे
sumatiruvāca atha sarvaṁ dinaṁ nītvā harismaraṇakīrtanaiḥ rātrau suṣvāpa gaṁgāyā rodhasyuruphalaprade
Sumati said: Then, having spent the whole day in remembering and chanting Hari's name, he slept that night on the bank of the Ganga, giver of great fruit.
Verse 2 (padma.5.22.2)
ददर्श स्वप्नमध्ये तु स स्वात्मानं चतुर्भुजम् । शंखचक्रगदापद्मशार्ङ्गकोदंडधारिणम्
dadarśa svapnamadhye tu sa svātmānaṁ caturbhujam śaṁkhacakragadāpadmaśārṅgakodaṁḍadhāriṇam
In the midst of a dream, he saw his own self as four-armed, bearing conch, discus, mace, lotus, bow, and arrow,
Verse 3 (padma.5.22.3)
नृत्यंतं पुरुषोत्तमस्य पुरतः शर्वादि देवैः सह । श्रीमद्भिः स्वतनूयुतैररिगदांबूत्थाब्जहेत्यादिभिः । विष्वक्सेनवरैर्गणैः सुतनुभिः श्रीशंसदोपासितं । दृष्ट्वा विस्मयमाप लोकविषयं हर्षं तथात्यद्भुतम्
nṛtyaṁtaṁ puruṣottamasya purataḥ śarvādi devaiḥ saha śrīmadbhiḥ svatanūyutairarigadāṁbūtthābjahetyādibhiḥ viṣvaksenavarairgaṇaiḥ sutanubhiḥ śrīśaṁsadopāsitaṁ dṛṣṭvā vismayamāpa lokaviṣayaṁ harṣaṁ tathātyadbhutam
dancing before Purushottama, together with Sharva and the other gods, glorious ones, each with their own radiant bodies, bearing mace, discus, and lotus, served by the finest attendants of Vishvaksena, of lovely form, attended by Shri herself — seeing this he was filled with a wonder and joy beyond the world's, most wondrous indeed.
Verse 4 (padma.5.22.4)
ददतं मनसोऽभीष्टं पुरुषोत्तमसंज्ञितम् । आत्मानं च कृपापात्रममन्यत महामतिः
dadataṁ manaso'bhīṣṭaṁ puruṣottamasaṁjñitam ātmānaṁ ca kṛpāpātramamanyata mahāmatiḥ
Seeing that giver of the mind's desire, named Purushottama, that man of great wisdom considered himself a vessel of grace.
Verse 5 (padma.5.22.5)
इत्येवं स्वप्नविषये ददर्श नृपसत्तमः । प्रातः प्रबुद्धो विप्राय जगाद स्वप्नमीक्षितम्
ityevaṁ svapnaviṣaye dadarśa nṛpasattamaḥ prātaḥ prabuddho viprāya jagāda svapnamīkṣitam
Thus, in the realm of the dream, that finest of kings saw this; waking at dawn, he told the brahmin of what he had seen in the dream.
Verse 6 (padma.5.22.6)
तच्छ्रुत्वा वाडवो धीमान्कथयामास विस्मितः । राजंस्त्वयासौ दृष्टो यः पुरुषोत्तमसंज्ञितः
tacchrutvā vāḍavo dhīmānkathayāmāsa vismitaḥ rājaṁstvayāsau dṛṣṭo yaḥ puruṣottamasaṁjñitaḥ
Hearing this, the wise brahmin, astonished, said: "O king, you have seen him — that one named Purushottama."
Verse 7 (padma.5.22.7)
दास्यते शंखचक्रादिचिह्नितां स्वतनुं हरिः । इति श्रुत्वा तु तद्वाक्यं रत्नग्रीवो महामनाः
dāsyate śaṁkhacakrādicihnitāṁ svatanuṁ hariḥ iti śrutvā tu tadvākyaṁ ratnagrīvo mahāmanāḥ
"Hari will grant you his own form, marked with conch, discus, and the rest." Hearing these words, great-minded Ratnagriva
Verse 8 (padma.5.22.8)
दापयामास दानानि दीनानां मानसोचितम् । स्नात्वा गंगाब्धिसंयोगे तर्पयित्वा पितॄन्सुरान्
dāpayāmāsa dānāni dīnānāṁ mānasocitam snātvā gaṁgābdhisaṁyoge tarpayitvā pitṝnsurān
had gifts given to the poor, as fitting to their needs; having bathed at the confluence of the Ganga and the sea, and offered tarpana to ancestors and gods,
Verse 9 (padma.5.22.9)
गायन्हरिगुणग्रामं प्रत्यैक्षत च दर्शनम् । ततो मध्याह्नसमये दिविदुंदुभयो मुहुः
gāyanhariguṇagrāmaṁ pratyaikṣata ca darśanam tato madhyāhnasamaye dividuṁdubhayo muhuḥ
singing the host of Hari's virtues, he awaited the sight of him. Then, at midday, kettledrums in heaven, again and again,
Verse 10 (padma.5.22.10)
जघ्नुः सुरकराघात बहुशब्दसुशब्दिताः । अकस्मात्पुष्पवृष्टिश्च बभूव नृपमस्तके
jaghnuḥ surakarāghāta bahuśabdasuśabditāḥ akasmātpuṣpavṛṣṭiśca babhūva nṛpamastake
struck by the gods' own hands, resounded with a great and beautiful sound; and suddenly a rain of flowers fell upon the king's head.
Verse 11 (padma.5.22.11)
धन्योसि नृपवर्यस्त्वं नीलं पश्याक्षिगोचरम्
dhanyosi nṛpavaryastvaṁ nīlaṁ paśyākṣigocaram
"Blessed are you, finest of kings — behold Nila, now within sight!"
Verse 12 (padma.5.22.12)
शृणोतीति यदा वाक्यं नृपो देवप्रणोदितम् । तदा स सूर्यकोटीनामधिकांति धरोद्भुतः
śṛṇotīti yadā vākyaṁ nṛpo devapraṇoditam tadā sa sūryakoṭīnāmadhikāṁti dharodbhutaḥ
When the king heard these words, spoken by a god, then, more radiant than a million suns, wondrous,
Verse 13 (padma.5.22.13)
राज्ञोऽक्षिगोचरो जातो नीलनामा महागिरिः । राजतैः कानकैः शृंगैः समंतात्परिराजितः
rājño'kṣigocaro jāto nīlanāmā mahāgiriḥ rājataiḥ kānakaiḥ śṛṁgaiḥ samaṁtātparirājitaḥ
there appeared before the king's eyes the great mountain named Nila, resplendent on every side with peaks of silver and gold.
Verse 14 (padma.5.22.14)
किमग्निः प्रज्वलत्येष द्वितीयः किमु भास्करः । किमयं वैद्युतः पुंजो ह्यकस्मात्स्थिरकांतिधृक्
kimagniḥ prajvalatyeṣa dvitīyaḥ kimu bhāskaraḥ kimayaṁ vaidyutaḥ puṁjo hyakasmātsthirakāṁtidhṛk
"Is this a fire blazing? Is this a second sun? Is this a mass of lightning, that has suddenly taken on such steady radiance?"
Verse 15 (padma.5.22.15)
तापस ब्राह्मणो दृष्ट्वा नीलप्रस्थं सुशोभितम् । राज्ञे निवेदयामास एष पुण्यो महागिरिः
tāpasa brāhmaṇo dṛṣṭvā nīlaprasthaṁ suśobhitam rājñe nivedayāmāsa eṣa puṇyo mahāgiriḥ
The ascetic brahmin, beholding the resplendent slope of Nila, announced to the king: "This is that holy great mountain."
Verse 16 (padma.5.22.16)
तच्छ्रुत्वा नृपतिश्रेष्ठः शिरसा प्रणनाम ह । धन्योऽस्मि कृतकृत्योऽस्मि नीलो मे दृष्टिगोचरः
tacchrutvā nṛpatiśreṣṭhaḥ śirasā praṇanāma ha dhanyo'smi kṛtakṛtyo'smi nīlo me dṛṣṭigocaraḥ
Hearing this, that finest of kings bowed his head: "I am blessed, my purpose is fulfilled, that Nila has come within the sight of my eyes."
Verse 17 (padma.5.22.17)
अमात्यो राजपत्नी च करम्बस्तंतुवायकः । नीलदर्शनसंहृष्टा बभूवुः पुरुषर्षभ
amātyo rājapatnī ca karambastaṁtuvāyakaḥ nīladarśanasaṁhṛṣṭā babhūvuḥ puruṣarṣabha
The minister, the queen, and Karamba the weaver, O bull among men, were filled with joy at the sight of Nila.
Verse 18 (padma.5.22.18)
पंचैते विजये काले नीलपर्वतमारुहन् । महादुंदुभिनिर्घोषाञ्च्छृण्वन्तो ह्यमरैः कृतान्
paṁcaite vijaye kāle nīlaparvatamāruhan mahāduṁdubhinirghoṣāñcchṛṇvanto hyamaraiḥ kṛtān
These five, at the time of victory, climbed the blue mountain, hearing the great roar of kettledrums made by the immortals.
Verse 19 (padma.5.22.19)
तस्योपरितने शृंगे चित्रपादपराजिते । ददर्श हाटकाबद्धं देवालयमनुत्तमम्
tasyoparitane śṛṁge citrapādaparājite dadarśa hāṭakābaddhaṁ devālayamanuttamam
On its upper peak, adorned with wondrous trees, he saw an unsurpassed temple of the gods, bound in gold,
Verse 20 (padma.5.22.20)
ब्रह्मागत्य सदा पूजां करोति परमेष्ठिनः । नैवेद्यं कुरुते यत्र हरिसंतोषकारकम्
brahmāgatya sadā pūjāṁ karoti parameṣṭhinaḥ naivedyaṁ kurute yatra harisaṁtoṣakārakam
where Brahma comes and ever performs worship of the Supreme Lord, where he makes an offering of food pleasing to Hari.
Verse 21 (padma.5.22.21)
दृष्ट्वाथ तत्र विमलं देवायतनमुत्तमम् । प्रविवेश परीवारैः पंचभिः सह संवृतः
dṛṣṭvātha tatra vimalaṁ devāyatanamuttamam praviveśa parīvāraiḥ paṁcabhiḥ saha saṁvṛtaḥ
Then, seeing there that spotless, finest temple of the gods, he entered, surrounded together with his five companions.
Verse 22 (padma.5.22.22)
तत्र दृष्ट्वा जातरूपे महामणिविचित्रिते । सिंहासने विराजंतं चतुर्भुजमनोहरम्
tatra dṛṣṭvā jātarūpe mahāmaṇivicitrite siṁhāsane virājaṁtaṁ caturbhujamanoharam
There he beheld, seated upon a throne of pure gold, wondrously set with great gems, the lovely four-armed one,
Verse 23 (padma.5.22.23)
चंड प्रचंड विजय जयादिभिरुपासितम् । प्रणनाम सपत्नीको राजा सेवकसंयुतः
caṁḍa pracaṁḍa vijaya jayādibhirupāsitam praṇanāma sapatnīko rājā sevakasaṁyutaḥ
attended by Chanda, Prachanda, Vijaya, Jaya, and the rest. The king, together with his queen and his attendants, bowed down.
Verse 24 (padma.5.22.24)
प्रणम्य परमात्मानं महाराजः सुरोत्तमम् । स्नापयामास विधिवद्वेदोक्तैः स्नानमंत्रकैः
praṇamya paramātmānaṁ mahārājaḥ surottamam snāpayāmāsa vidhivadvedoktaiḥ snānamaṁtrakaiḥ
Having bowed to the Supreme Soul, finest of gods, the great king had him duly bathed, according to rule, with mantras from the Veda prescribed for bathing.
Verse 25 (padma.5.22.25)
अर्घ्यपाद्यादिकं चक्रे प्रीतेन मनसा नृपः । चंदनेन विलिप्यैनं सुवस्त्रे विनिवेद्य च
arghyapādyādikaṁ cakre prītena manasā nṛpaḥ caṁdanena vilipyainaṁ suvastre vinivedya ca
The king performed welcome-water, foot-water, and the rest, with a pleased heart; anointing him with sandal-paste, and offering him fine garments,
Verse 26 (padma.5.22.26)
धूपमारार्तिकं कृत्वा सर्वस्वादुमनोहरम् । नैवेद्यं भगवन्मूर्त्यै न्यवेदयदथो नृपः
dhūpamārārtikaṁ kṛtvā sarvasvādumanoharam naivedyaṁ bhagavanmūrtyai nyavedayadatho nṛpaḥ
having performed the offering of incense and lamps, the king then offered up food, complete with every delightful taste, to that divine image.
Verse 27 (padma.5.22.27)
प्रणम्य च स्तुतिं चक्रे तापसब्राह्मणेन च । यथामतिगुणग्रामगुंफितस्तोत्रसंचयैः
praṇamya ca stutiṁ cakre tāpasabrāhmaṇena ca yathāmatiguṇagrāmaguṁphitastotrasaṁcayaiḥ
Bowing, he offered praise, together with the ascetic brahmin, in a collection of hymns woven, according to his own understanding, from the host of the Lord's virtues.
Verse 28 (padma.5.22.28)
राजोवाच। एकस्त्वं पुरुषः साक्षाद्भगवान्प्रकृतेः परः । कार्यकारणतो भिन्नो महत्तत्त्वादिपूजितः
rājovāca ekastvaṁ puruṣaḥ sākṣādbhagavānprakṛteḥ paraḥ kāryakāraṇato bhinno mahattattvādipūjitaḥ
The king said: "You alone are the Person, the Lord himself, beyond material nature, distinct from cause and effect, worshipped by Mahat and the other principles."
Verse 29 (padma.5.22.29)
त्वन्नाभिकमलाज्जज्ञे ब्रह्मा सृष्टिविचक्षणः । तथा संहारकर्ता च रुद्रस्त्वन्नेत्रसंभवः
tvannābhikamalājjajñe brahmā sṛṣṭivicakṣaṇaḥ tathā saṁhārakartā ca rudrastvannetrasaṁbhavaḥ
"From your navel-lotus was born Brahma, skilled in creation; likewise Rudra, agent of dissolution, born from your eye."
Verse 30 (padma.5.22.30)
त्वयाज्ञप्तः करोत्यस्य विश्वस्य परिचेष्टितम् । त्वत्तो जातं पुराणाद्यज्जगत्स्थास्नु चरिष्णु च
tvayājñaptaḥ karotyasya viśvasya pariceṣṭitam tvatto jātaṁ purāṇādyajjagatsthāsnu cariṣṇu ca
"Commanded by you, he performs the operations of this universe; from you, the primeval one, has arisen this world, both what is still and what moves."
Verse 31 (padma.5.22.31)
चेतनाशक्तिमाविश्य त्वमेनं चेतयस्यहो । तव जन्म तु नास्त्येव नांतस्तव जगत्पते । वृद्धिक्षयपरीणामास्त्वयि संत्येव नो विभो
cetanāśaktimāviśya tvamenaṁ cetayasyaho tava janma tu nāstyeva nāṁtastava jagatpate vṛddhikṣayaparīṇāmāstvayi saṁtyeva no vibho
"Entering into this world's power of consciousness, you, ah, give it awareness. You have no birth, nor any end, O lord of the world; increase, decrease, and change are not in you at all, O all-pervading one."
Verse 32 (padma.5.22.32)
तथापि भक्तरक्षार्थं धर्मस्थापनहेतवे । करोषि जन्मकर्माणि ह्यनुरूपगुणानि च
tathāpi bhaktarakṣārthaṁ dharmasthāpanahetave karoṣi janmakarmāṇi hyanurūpaguṇāni ca
"Yet still, for the protection of your devotees, for the sake of establishing dharma, you undertake births and deeds, and qualities fitting to them."
Verse 33 (padma.5.22.33)
त्वया मात्स्यं वपुर्धृत्वा शंखस्तु निहतोसुरः । वेदाः सुरक्षिता ब्रह्मन्महापुरुषपूर्वज
tvayā mātsyaṁ vapurdhṛtvā śaṁkhastu nihatosuraḥ vedāḥ surakṣitā brahmanmahāpuruṣapūrvaja
"Taking on the form of a fish, you slew the demon Shankha; the Vedas were protected by you, O Brahman, ancestor of the great Person."
Verse 34 (padma.5.22.34)
शेषो न वेत्ति महि ते भारत्यपि महेश्वरी । किमुतान्ये महाविष्णो मादृशास्तु कुबुद्धयः
śeṣo na vetti mahi te bhāratyapi maheśvarī kimutānye mahāviṣṇo mādṛśāstu kubuddhayaḥ
"Even Shesha does not know your majesty, nor does Sarasvati, the great goddess; how then could others, of poor understanding like myself, O Mahavishnu?"
Verse 35 (padma.5.22.35)
मनसा त्वां न चाप्नोति वागियं परमेश्वरी । तस्मादहं कथं त्वां वै स्तोतुं स्यामीश्वरः प्रभो
manasā tvāṁ na cāpnoti vāgiyaṁ parameśvarī tasmādahaṁ kathaṁ tvāṁ vai stotuṁ syāmīśvaraḥ prabho
"Even this supreme speech does not attain you by the mind; how then, O Lord, my master, could I praise you?"
Verse 36 (padma.5.22.36)
इति स्तुत्वा स शिरसा प्रणाममकरोन्मुहुः । गद्गदस्वरसंयुक्तो रोमहर्षांकितांगकः
iti stutvā sa śirasā praṇāmamakaronmuhuḥ gadgadasvarasaṁyukto romaharṣāṁkitāṁgakaḥ
Having thus praised him, he bowed his head again and again, his voice choked with feeling, his body marked with the thrill of delight.
Verse 37 (padma.5.22.37)
इति स्तुत्या प्रहृष्टात्मा भगवान्पुरुषोत्तमः । उवाच वचनं सत्यं राजानं प्रति सार्थकम्
iti stutyā prahṛṣṭātmā bhagavānpuruṣottamaḥ uvāca vacanaṁ satyaṁ rājānaṁ prati sārthakam
Thus, his heart delighted by this praise, the Lord Purushottama spoke true and meaningful words to the king —
Verse 38 (padma.5.22.38)
श्रीभगवानुवाच। तव स्तुत्या प्रहर्षोऽभून्मम राजन्महामते । जानीहि त्वं महाराज मां च प्रकृतितः परम्
śrībhagavānuvāca tava stutyā praharṣo'bhūnmama rājanmahāmate jānīhi tvaṁ mahārāja māṁ ca prakṛtitaḥ param
Shri Bhagavan said: "By your praise I have been greatly delighted, O king, greatly wise one. Know, great king, that I am beyond material nature."
Verse 39 (padma.5.22.39)
नैवेद्यभक्षणं त्वं हि शीघ्रं कुरु मनोहरम् । चतुर्भुजत्वमाप्तः सन्गंतासि परमं पदम्
naivedyabhakṣaṇaṁ tvaṁ hi śīghraṁ kuru manoharam caturbhujatvamāptaḥ sangaṁtāsi paramaṁ padam
"Partake now, quickly, of this delightful consecrated food; having attained the four-armed state, you shall go to the supreme abode."
Verse 40 (padma.5.22.40)
त्वत्कृत्स्तुतिरत्नेन यो मां स्तोष्यति मानवः । तस्यापि दर्शनं दास्ये भुक्तिमुक्तिवरप्रदम्
tvatkṛtstutiratnena yo māṁ stoṣyati mānavaḥ tasyāpi darśanaṁ dāsye bhuktimuktivarapradam
"Whatever man shall praise me with this jewel of praise composed by you — to him too I shall grant my own sight, giver of the boon of enjoyment and liberation."
Verse 41 (padma.5.22.41)
इत्येवं वचनं राजा श्रुत्वा भगवतोदितम् । नैवेद्यभक्षणं चक्रे चतुर्भिः सह सेवकैः
ityevaṁ vacanaṁ rājā śrutvā bhagavatoditam naivedyabhakṣaṇaṁ cakre caturbhiḥ saha sevakaiḥ
Hearing these words spoken by the Lord, the king then partook of the consecrated food, together with his four attendants.
Verse 42 (padma.5.22.42)
ततो विमानं संप्राप्तं किंकिणीजालमंडितम् । अप्सरोवृंदसंसेव्यं सर्वभोगसमन्वितम्
tato vimānaṁ saṁprāptaṁ kiṁkiṇījālamaṁḍitam apsarovṛṁdasaṁsevyaṁ sarvabhogasamanvitam
Then there arrived a celestial chariot, adorned with a network of little bells, served by throngs of apsarases, complete with every enjoyment,
Verse 43 (padma.5.22.43)
पुरुषोत्तमसंज्ञं च पश्यन्राजा स धार्मिकः । ववंदे चरणौ तस्य कृपापात्रकृतात्मकः
puruṣottamasaṁjñaṁ ca paśyanrājā sa dhārmikaḥ vavaṁde caraṇau tasya kṛpāpātrakṛtātmakaḥ
beholding that one named Purushottama, that righteous king, his self made a vessel of grace, bowed at his feet.
Verse 44 (padma.5.22.44)
तदाज्ञया विमाने स आरुह्य महिलायुतः । जगाम पश्यतस्तस्य दिवि वैकुंठमद्भुतम्
tadājñayā vimāne sa āruhya mahilāyutaḥ jagāma paśyatastasya divi vaikuṁṭhamadbhutam
By his command, mounting that chariot together with his queen, he went, before his very eyes, to the wondrous Vaikuntha in heaven.
Verse 45 (padma.5.22.45)
मंत्री धर्मपरो राज्ञः सर्वधर्मविदुत्तमः । ययौ साकं विमानेन ललनावृन्दसेवितः
maṁtrī dharmaparo rājñaḥ sarvadharmaviduttamaḥ yayau sākaṁ vimānena lalanāvṛndasevitaḥ
The king's minister, devoted to dharma, finest among those learned in every duty, went together on the chariot, attended by throngs of celestial women.
Verse 46 (padma.5.22.46)
तापसब्राह्मणस्तत्र सर्वतीर्थावगाहकः । चतुर्भुजत्वं संप्राप्तो ययौ देवैर्विमानिभिः
tāpasabrāhmaṇastatra sarvatīrthāvagāhakaḥ caturbhujatvaṁ saṁprāpto yayau devairvimānibhiḥ
The ascetic brahmin there, who had bathed in every sacred ford, having attained the four-armed state, went with the gods upon their chariots.
Verse 47 (padma.5.22.47)
करंबोऽपि महाराज गानपुण्येन दर्शनम् । प्राप्तो ययौ सुरावासं सर्वदेवादिदुर्ल्लभम्
karaṁbo'pi mahārāja gānapuṇyena darśanam prāpto yayau surāvāsaṁ sarvadevādidurllabham
Karamba too, great king, through the merit of his singing, obtained the vision, and went to the abode of the gods, hard to attain even for all the gods and the rest.
Verse 48 (padma.5.22.48)
सर्वे प्रचलिता विष्णुलोकं परममद्भुतम् । चतुर्भुजाः शंखचक्रगदापाथोजधारिणः
sarve pracalitā viṣṇulokaṁ paramamadbhutam caturbhujāḥ śaṁkhacakragadāpāthojadhāriṇaḥ
All of them set out for the supreme, most wondrous world of Vishnu, four-armed, bearing conch, discus, mace, and lotus.
Verse 49 (padma.5.22.49)
सर्वे मेघश्रियः शुद्धा लसदंभोजपाणयः । हारकेयूरकटकैर्भूषितांगा ययुर्दिवम्
sarve meghaśriyaḥ śuddhā lasadaṁbhojapāṇayaḥ hārakeyūrakaṭakairbhūṣitāṁgā yayurdivam
All, radiant as clouds, pure, their lotus hands gleaming, their bodies adorned with necklaces, armlets, and bracelets, went to heaven.
Verse 50 (padma.5.22.50)
तद्विमानावलीर्दृष्ट्वा लोकैः प्रकृतिभिस्तदा । दुंदुभीनां तु निर्घोषस्तैः कृतः कर्णगोचरः
tadvimānāvalīrdṛṣṭvā lokaiḥ prakṛtibhistadā duṁdubhīnāṁ tu nirghoṣastaiḥ kṛtaḥ karṇagocaraḥ
Seeing that row of celestial chariots, the people, their own subjects, then heard the roar of kettledrums made by them.
Verse 51 (padma.5.22.51)
तदैको ब्राह्मणो ह्यासीद्विष्णुपादाब्जवल्लभः । गतस्तद्विरहाकृष्टचेता जातश्चतुर्भुजः
tadaiko brāhmaṇo hyāsīdviṣṇupādābjavallabhaḥ gatastadvirahākṛṣṭacetā jātaścaturbhujaḥ
Then there was one brahmin, beloved at Vishnu's lotus feet, who, his heart drawn by longing at their departure, became four-armed himself.
Verse 52 (padma.5.22.52)
तच्चित्रं वीक्ष्य लोकास्ते प्रशंसंतो महोदयम् । गंगासागरसंयोगे स्नात्वाऽगुस्तं पुरं प्रति
taccitraṁ vīkṣya lokāste praśaṁsaṁto mahodayam gaṁgāsāgarasaṁyoge snātvā'gustaṁ puraṁ prati
Beholding that wonder, those people, praising this great glory, bathed at the confluence of the Ganga and the sea, and went toward that city —
Verse 53 (padma.5.22.53)
अहो भाग्यं भूमिपते रत्नग्रीवस्य सन्मतेः । जगामानेन देहेन तद्विष्णोः परमं पदम्
aho bhāgyaṁ bhūmipate ratnagrīvasya sanmateḥ jagāmānena dehena tadviṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padam
"Ah, what fortune for the lord of the earth, good-minded Ratnagriva! He went, in this very body, to that supreme abode of Vishnu!"
Verse 54 (padma.5.22.54)
राजन्नसौ नीलगिरिः पुरुषोत्तमसत्कृतः । यं वीक्ष्यैव व्रजंत्यद्धा वैकुंठं परमायनम्
rājannasau nīlagiriḥ puruṣottamasatkṛtaḥ yaṁ vīkṣyaiva vrajaṁtyaddhā vaikuṁṭhaṁ paramāyanam
"O king, this is that blue mountain, honored by Purushottama — merely by seeing which people go directly to Vaikuntha, the supreme goal."
Verse 55 (padma.5.22.55)
एतन्नीलस्य माहात्म्यं यः शृणोति स भाग्यवान् । यः श्रावयति लोकान्वै तौ गच्छेतां परं पदम्
etannīlasya māhātmyaṁ yaḥ śṛṇoti sa bhāgyavān yaḥ śrāvayati lokānvai tau gacchetāṁ paraṁ padam
"Whoever hears this glory of Nila is fortunate; and whoever tells it to people — both of them go to the supreme abode."
Verse 56 (padma.5.22.56)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु दुःस्वप्नो नश्यति स्मृतिमात्रतः । प्रांते संसारनिस्तारं ददाति पुरुषोत्तमः
etacchrutvā tu duḥsvapno naśyati smṛtimātrataḥ prāṁte saṁsāranistāraṁ dadāti puruṣottamaḥ
"Having heard this, a bad dream is destroyed by mere remembrance; at the end, Purushottama grants deliverance from samsara."
Verse 57 (padma.5.22.57)
योऽसौ नीलाधिवासी च स रामः पुरुषोत्तमः । सीतासाक्षान्महालक्ष्मीः सर्वकारणकारणम्
yo'sau nīlādhivāsī ca sa rāmaḥ puruṣottamaḥ sītāsākṣānmahālakṣmīḥ sarvakāraṇakāraṇam
"That one who dwells on Nila is Rama himself, Purushottama; Sita is Mahalakshmi herself, the cause of all causes."
Verse 58 (padma.5.22.58)
हयमेधं चरित्वा स लोकान्वै पावयिष्यति । यन्नामब्रह्महत्यायाः प्रायश्चित्ते प्रदिश्यते
hayamedhaṁ caritvā sa lokānvai pāvayiṣyati yannāmabrahmahatyāyāḥ prāyaścitte pradiśyate
"Having performed the horse-sacrifice, he shall purify the worlds; whose very name is prescribed as atonement for the sin of slaying a brahmin."
Verse 59 (padma.5.22.59)
इदानीं त्वद्धयः प्राप्तो नीलेपर्वतसत्तमे । पुरुषोत्तमदेवं त्वं नमस्कुरु महामते
idānīṁ tvaddhayaḥ prāpto nīleparvatasattame puruṣottamadevaṁ tvaṁ namaskuru mahāmate
"Now your horse has reached this finest of blue mountains; bow to the god Purushottama, O greatly wise one."
Verse 60 (padma.5.22.60)
तत्र निष्पापिनो भूत्वा यास्यामः परमं पदम् । यस्य प्रसादाद्बहवो निस्तीर्णा भवसागरात्
tatra niṣpāpino bhūtvā yāsyāmaḥ paramaṁ padam yasya prasādādbahavo nistīrṇā bhavasāgarāt
"There, having become sinless, we shall go to the supreme abode — by whose grace many have crossed over the ocean of worldly existence."
Verse 61 (padma.5.22.61)
एवं प्रवदतस्तस्य प्राप्तोऽश्वो नीलपर्वतम् । वायुवेगेन पृथिवीं कुर्वन्संक्षुण्णमंडलाम्
evaṁ pravadatastasya prāpto'śvo nīlaparvatam vāyuvegena pṛthivīṁ kurvansaṁkṣuṇṇamaṁḍalām
As he was speaking thus, the horse reached the blue mountain, making the surface of the earth tremble with the speed of the wind.
Verse 62 (padma.5.22.62)
तदा राजापि तत्पृष्ठचारी नीलाभिधं गिरिम् । प्राप्तो गंगाब्धिसंयोगे स्नात्वागात्पुरुषोत्तमम्
tadā rājāpi tatpṛṣṭhacārī nīlābhidhaṁ girim prāpto gaṁgābdhisaṁyoge snātvāgātpuruṣottamam
Then the king too, following behind it, reached the mountain called Nila; having bathed at the confluence of the Ganga and the sea, he went to Purushottama.
Verse 63 (padma.5.22.63)
स्तुत्वा नत्वा च देवेशं सुरासुरनमस्कृतम् । जातं कृतार्थमात्मानममन्यत स शत्रुहा
stutvā natvā ca deveśaṁ surāsuranamaskṛtam jātaṁ kṛtārthamātmānamamanyata sa śatruhā
Having praised and bowed to that lord of gods, worshipped by gods and demons, he, slayer of enemies, considered himself fulfilled.
