Verse 1 (padma.5.23.1)

शेष उवाच। क्षणं स्थित्वा तृणान्यत्त्वा ययौ वाजी मनोजवः । वीरश्रेणीवृतः पत्रं भाले धृत्वा सचामरः

śeṣa uvāca kṣaṇaṁ sthitvā tṛṇānyattvā yayau vājī manojavaḥ vīraśreṇīvṛtaḥ patraṁ bhāle dhṛtvā sacāmaraḥ

Shesha said: Having stayed a moment, having eaten grass, the horse, swift as thought, went on, surrounded by ranks of heroes, bearing a document on its forehead, with a chowrie,

Verse 2 (padma.5.23.2)

शत्रुघ्नेन सुवीरेण लक्ष्मीनिधि नृपेण च । पुष्कलेनोग्रवाहेन प्रतापाग्र्येण रक्षितः

śatrughnena suvīreṇa lakṣmīnidhi nṛpeṇa ca puṣkalenogravāhena pratāpāgryeṇa rakṣitaḥ

protected by the brave Shatrughna, by King Lakshminidhi, by Pushkala, by fierce-charioted Pratapagrya, foremost in valor.

Verse 3 (padma.5.23.3)

ययौ पुरीं स चक्रांकां सुबाहुपरिरक्षिताम् । अनेकवीरकोटीभी रक्षितोऽनुगतः प्रभो

yayau purīṁ sa cakrāṁkāṁ subāhuparirakṣitām anekavīrakoṭībhī rakṣito'nugataḥ prabho

It went, my lord, protected by countless heroes, toward that city marked with the wheel, itself protected by Subahu.

Verse 4 (padma.5.23.4)

तदा पुत्रोस्य दमनो मृगयामास्थितो महान् । ददर्शाश्वं भालपत्रं चंदनादिकचर्चितम्

tadā putrosya damano mṛgayāmāsthito mahān dadarśāśvaṁ bhālapatraṁ caṁdanādikacarcitam

Then his son, named Damana, engaged in a great hunt, saw the horse, its forehead-document smeared with sandal-paste and the like.

Verse 5 (padma.5.23.5)

विलोक्य सेवकं प्राह कस्याश्वो मेऽक्षिगोचरः । भाले पत्रं धृतं किं नु चामरं किंतु शोभनम्

vilokya sevakaṁ prāha kasyāśvo me'kṣigocaraḥ bhāle patraṁ dhṛtaṁ kiṁ nu cāmaraṁ kiṁtu śobhanam

Beholding it, he said to a servant: "Whose horse is this within my sight? What is this document borne on its forehead, and this lovely chowrie?"

Verse 6 (padma.5.23.6)

इति राज्ञोवचः श्रुत्वा सेवकः प्रययौ ततः । यत्रासौ वर्तते वाजी भालपत्रः सुशोभनः

iti rājñovacaḥ śrutvā sevakaḥ prayayau tataḥ yatrāsau vartate vājī bhālapatraḥ suśobhanaḥ

Hearing the king's words, the servant then went to where that lovely, forehead-marked horse stood,

Verse 7 (padma.5.23.7)

गृहीत्वा तं केशसंघे रत्नमालाविभूषितम् । निनाय चाग्रे भूपस्य सुबाहुकुलधारिणः

gṛhītvā taṁ keśasaṁghe ratnamālāvibhūṣitam nināya cāgre bhūpasya subāhukuladhāriṇaḥ

and, seizing it by its mane, adorned with garlands of jewels, brought it before the king, of Subahu's line.

Verse 8 (padma.5.23.8)

स पत्रं वाचयामास सुंदराक्षरशोभितम् । अयोध्याधिपतिश्चासीद्राजा दशरथो बली

sa patraṁ vācayāmāsa suṁdarākṣaraśobhitam ayodhyādhipatiścāsīdrājā daśaratho balī

He read the document, resplendent with beautiful letters: "There was a mighty king, Dasharatha, lord of Ayodhya."

Verse 9 (padma.5.23.9)

तस्यात्मजो रामभद्रः सर्वशूरशिरोमणिः । नान्योस्ति तत्समः पृथ्व्यां धनुर्धरणविक्रमः

tasyātmajo rāmabhadraḥ sarvaśūraśiromaṇiḥ nānyosti tatsamaḥ pṛthvyāṁ dhanurdharaṇavikramaḥ

"His son is Ramabhadra, crest-jewel of all heroes; there is no other on earth equal to him in valor of bow-bearing."

Verse 10 (padma.5.23.10)

तेनासौ मोचितो वाजी चंदनादिकचर्चितः । तं पालयति धर्मात्मा शत्रुघ्नः परवीरहा

tenāsau mocito vājī caṁdanādikacarcitaḥ taṁ pālayati dharmātmā śatrughnaḥ paravīrahā

"By him this horse, smeared with sandal-paste and the rest, has been released; the righteous Shatrughna, slayer of enemy heroes, protects it."

Verse 11 (padma.5.23.11)

ये च शूरा वयं वीरा धनुर्हस्ता इमे वयम् । ते गृह्णंतु बलाद्वाहं रत्नमालाविभूषितम्

ye ca śūrā vayaṁ vīrā dhanurhastā ime vayam te gṛhṇaṁtu balādvāhaṁ ratnamālāvibhūṣitam

"Whichever heroes, whichever brave ones, bow-handed like ourselves, they may seize by force this horse, adorned with garlands of jewels;"

Verse 12 (padma.5.23.12)

तं च मोक्ष्यति शत्रुघ्नः सर्ववीरशिरोमणिः । अन्यथा पादयोस्तस्य प्रणतिं यांतु धन्विनः

taṁ ca mokṣyati śatrughnaḥ sarvavīraśiromaṇiḥ anyathā pādayostasya praṇatiṁ yāṁtu dhanvinaḥ

"and Shatrughna, crest-jewel of all heroes, will recover it — otherwise, let the bowmen bow at his feet."

Verse 13 (padma.5.23.13)

इत्यभिप्रायमालोक्य जगाद नृपनंदनः । राम एव धनुर्धारी न वयं क्षत्त्रियाः स्मृताः

ityabhiprāyamālokya jagāda nṛpanaṁdanaḥ rāma eva dhanurdhārī na vayaṁ kṣattriyāḥ smṛtāḥ

Understanding this meaning, the king's son spoke: "Rama alone is a bow-bearer? Are we not remembered as kshatriyas?"

Verse 14 (padma.5.23.14)

ताते मेऽवस्थिते पृथ्व्यां कोऽयं गर्वो महान्भुवि । प्राप्नोतु गर्वस्य फलं मम निर्मुक्तसायकैः

tāte me'vasthite pṛthvyāṁ ko'yaṁ garvo mahānbhuvi prāpnotu garvasya phalaṁ mama nirmuktasāyakaiḥ

"While my father lives upon the earth, what great pride is this in the world? Let him receive the fruit of his pride from my loosed arrows!"

Verse 15 (padma.5.23.15)

अद्य मे निशिता बाणाः शत्रुघ्नं किंशुकं यथा । पुष्पितं विदधत्वद्धा क्षतावृतशरीरकम्

adya me niśitā bāṇāḥ śatrughnaṁ kiṁśukaṁ yathā puṣpitaṁ vidadhatvaddhā kṣatāvṛtaśarīrakam

"Today my sharpened arrows shall make Shatrughna, as it were, a blossoming kimshuka tree, his body covered with wounds!"

Verse 16 (padma.5.23.16)

दारयंतु कपोलांश्च सायका मम दंतिनाम् । अश्वान्पश्यंतु शतशो रुधिरौघपरिप्लुतान्

dārayaṁtu kapolāṁśca sāyakā mama daṁtinām aśvānpaśyaṁtu śataśo rudhiraughapariplutān

"Let my arrows tear the cheeks of his elephants; let his horses be seen by the hundred, drenched in floods of blood!"

Verse 17 (padma.5.23.17)

पिबंतु योगिनीसंघा रुधिराणि नृमस्तकैः । शिवा भवंतु संतुष्टा मद्वैरिक्रव्यभक्षणैः

pibaṁtu yoginīsaṁghā rudhirāṇi nṛmastakaiḥ śivā bhavaṁtu saṁtuṣṭā madvairikravyabhakṣaṇaiḥ

"Let the throngs of yoginis drink the blood from men's heads; let the jackals be satisfied, feasting on the flesh of my enemies!"

Verse 18 (padma.5.23.18)

पश्यंतु सुभटास्तस्य मम बाहुबलं महत् । कोदंडदंडनिर्मुक्ताः शरकोटीर्विमुंचतः

paśyaṁtu subhaṭāstasya mama bāhubalaṁ mahat kodaṁḍadaṁḍanirmuktāḥ śarakoṭīrvimuṁcataḥ

"Let his warriors behold my great arm-strength, releasing myriads of arrows loosed from the staff of my bow!"

Verse 19 (padma.5.23.19)

इत्थमुक्त्वा महीपस्य तनुजो दमनाभिधः । स्वपुरं प्रेषयित्वा तं प्रहृष्टोऽभवदुद्भटः

itthamuktvā mahīpasya tanujo damanābhidhaḥ svapuraṁ preṣayitvā taṁ prahṛṣṭo'bhavadudbhaṭaḥ

Having said this, the king's son named Damana, sending that message to his own city, became fierce, overjoyed.

Verse 20 (padma.5.23.20)

सेनापतिमुवाचेदं सज्जीकुरु महामते । सेनां परिमितां मह्यं वैरिवृंदनिवारणे

senāpatimuvācedaṁ sajjīkuru mahāmate senāṁ parimitāṁ mahyaṁ vairivṛṁdanivāraṇe

He said to his commander: "Make ready, greatly wise one, my army — sufficient for me to repel the enemy host."

Verse 21 (padma.5.23.21)

सज्जां सेनां विधायाशु संमुखो रणमंडले । स्थितवान्या वदत्युग्रस्तावत्प्राप्ता हयानुगाः

sajjāṁ senāṁ vidhāyāśu saṁmukho raṇamaṁḍale sthitavānyā vadatyugrastāvatprāptā hayānugāḥ

Having quickly made the army ready, he stood facing them on the battlefield; while he, fierce, was still speaking, those following the horse arrived.

Verse 22 (padma.5.23.22)

क्वासौ हयो महाराज्ञो भालपत्रेण चिह्नितः । पप्रच्छुस्ते तु चान्योन्यमतिव्याकुलिता मुहुः

kvāsau hayo mahārājño bhālapatreṇa cihnitaḥ papracchuste tu cānyonyamativyākulitā muhuḥ

"Where is that great king's horse, marked with the document on its forehead?" — they asked one another, again and again, exceedingly agitated.

Verse 23 (padma.5.23.23)

तावद्ददर्श पुरतः प्रतापाग्र्यः परंतपः । सज्जीभूतं तु कटकं वीरशब्दनिनादितम्

tāvaddadarśa purataḥ pratāpāgryaḥ paraṁtapaḥ sajjībhūtaṁ tu kaṭakaṁ vīraśabdanināditam

Then Pratapagrya, foremost in valor, scorcher of foes, saw before him an army made ready, resounding with the cries of heroes.

Verse 24 (padma.5.23.24)

तत्रावदञ्जनाः केचिन्नीतोऽश्वोऽनेन भूपते । अन्यथा संमुखस्तिष्ठेत्कथं वीरो बलानुगः

tatrāvadañjanāḥ kecinnīto'śvo'nena bhūpate anyathā saṁmukhastiṣṭhetkathaṁ vīro balānugaḥ

There some dark-skinned men said: "The horse has been taken by him, O king; otherwise, how would a hero, followed by his forces, stand facing us?"

Verse 25 (padma.5.23.25)

इत्याकर्ण्य प्रतापाग्र्यः प्रेषयामास सेवकम् । स गत्वा तत्र पप्रच्छ कुत्राश्वो रामभूपतेः

ityākarṇya pratāpāgryaḥ preṣayāmāsa sevakam sa gatvā tatra papraccha kutrāśvo rāmabhūpateḥ

Hearing this, Pratapagrya sent a servant; he, going there, asked: "Where is King Rama's horse?"

Verse 26 (padma.5.23.26)

केन नीतः कुतो नीतो रामं जानाति नो कुधीः । यं शक्रप्रमुखा देवा बलिमादाय सन्नताः

kena nītaḥ kuto nīto rāmaṁ jānāti no kudhīḥ yaṁ śakrapramukhā devā balimādāya sannatāḥ

"By whom was it taken, and to where? Does this ill-minded one not know Rama, to whom Indra and the other gods, bowing, bring their tribute?"

Verse 27 (padma.5.23.27)

तस्य वै धर्मराजस्य कुपितं तु बलं महत् । सर्वथा हि ग्रसिष्येत प्रणतिं चेन्न यास्यति

tasya vai dharmarājasya kupitaṁ tu balaṁ mahat sarvathā hi grasiṣyeta praṇatiṁ cenna yāsyati

"The mighty army of that very King of Dharma, once enraged, will surely devour him entirely, if he does not submit."

Verse 28 (padma.5.23.28)

इत्थमुक्तं समाकर्ण्य तदा राजसुतो बली । तं वै धिक्कारयामास वाग्जालेन सुदुर्मनाः

itthamuktaṁ samākarṇya tadā rājasuto balī taṁ vai dhikkārayāmāsa vāgjālena sudurmanāḥ

Hearing this said, then that mighty prince, most evil-minded, mocked him with a web of words —

Verse 29 (padma.5.23.29)

मयानीतो यज्ञहयः पत्रचिह्नाद्यलंकृतः । ये शूरास्ते तु मां जित्वा मोचयंतु बलादिह

mayānīto yajñahayaḥ patracihnādyalaṁkṛtaḥ ye śūrāste tu māṁ jitvā mocayaṁtu balādiha

"I have taken the sacrificial horse, adorned with its document and the rest; let those who are heroes come and recover it from me here, by force!"

Verse 30 (padma.5.23.30)

सेवकस्तद्वचः श्रुत्वा रोषपूर्णो हसन्ययौ । राज्ञे निवेदयामास यथावदुपवर्णितम्

sevakastadvacaḥ śrutvā roṣapūrṇo hasanyayau rājñe nivedayāmāsa yathāvadupavarṇitam

The servant, hearing these words, filled with rage, went off laughing, and reported to the king exactly what had been said.

Verse 31 (padma.5.23.31)

तच्छ्रुत्वा रोषताम्राक्षः प्रतापाग्र्यो महाबलः । ययौ योद्धुं राजपुत्रं महावीरपुरस्कृतम्

tacchrutvā roṣatāmrākṣaḥ pratāpāgryo mahābalaḥ yayau yoddhuṁ rājaputraṁ mahāvīrapuraskṛtam

Hearing this, Pratapagrya, mighty, his eyes red with fury, went to fight that prince, honored as a great hero.

Verse 32 (padma.5.23.32)

रथेन कनकांगेन चतुर्वाजिसुशोभिना । सुकूबरेण सर्वास्त्रपूरितेन ययौ बली

rathena kanakāṁgena caturvājisuśobhinā sukūbareṇa sarvāstrapūritena yayau balī

Mighty, he went in a chariot with golden fittings, adorned with four fine horses, with a fine pole, filled with every weapon.

Verse 33 (padma.5.23.33)

धनुष्टंकारयामास महाबलसमन्वितः । पुनःपुनर्जहासोच्चैः कोपादुद्गमिताश्रुकः

dhanuṣṭaṁkārayāmāsa mahābalasamanvitaḥ punaḥpunarjahāsoccaiḥ kopādudgamitāśrukaḥ

He twanged his bow, endowed with great strength, and laughed loudly again and again, tears welling up from his anger.

Verse 34 (padma.5.23.34)

अश्ववाहा गजारूढाः खड्गोल्लसितपाणयः । अन्वयुस्ते प्रतापाग्र्यं रोषपूर्णाकुलेक्षणम्

aśvavāhā gajārūḍhāḥ khaḍgollasitapāṇayaḥ anvayuste pratāpāgryaṁ roṣapūrṇākulekṣaṇam

Horsemen, elephant-riders, swords gleaming in hand, followed Pratapagrya, his eyes filled with agitated fury.

Verse 35 (padma.5.23.35)

हस्तिनः पत्तयश्चैव कोटिशः प्रधनोद्यताः । चिरकालमभीप्संतो रणं वीरेणकारितम्

hastinaḥ pattayaścaiva koṭiśaḥ pradhanodyatāḥ cirakālamabhīpsaṁto raṇaṁ vīreṇakāritam

Elephants and foot-soldiers by the millions, eager for battle, long desiring the war that the hero had brought about.

Verse 36 (padma.5.23.36)

तदोद्यतं समाज्ञाय रिपुसैन्यं नृपात्मजः । प्रत्युज्जगाम वीराग्र्यो महाबलपरीवृतः

tadodyataṁ samājñāya ripusainyaṁ nṛpātmajaḥ pratyujjagāma vīrāgryo mahābalaparīvṛtaḥ

Then, learning that the enemy army was ready, the king's son, foremost of heroes, went out to meet it, surrounded by a mighty force.

Verse 37 (padma.5.23.37)

सन्नद्धः कवची खड्गी शरासनधरो युवा । लीलयैव ययौ योद्धुं मृगराड्गजतामिव

sannaddhaḥ kavacī khaḍgī śarāsanadharo yuvā līlayaiva yayau yoddhuṁ mṛgarāḍgajatāmiva

Armored, sword in hand, bow-bearer, that youth went to battle as if in play, like a lion against an elephant.

Verse 38 (padma.5.23.38)

तदा योधाः प्रकुपिताः परस्परवधैषिणः । छिंधि भिंधीति भाषंतो रणकार्यविशारदाः

tadā yodhāḥ prakupitāḥ parasparavadhaiṣiṇaḥ chiṁdhi bhiṁdhīti bhāṣaṁto raṇakāryaviśāradāḥ

Then the warriors, enraged, each seeking the other's death, skilled in the business of war, cried "Cut! Pierce!" —

Verse 39 (padma.5.23.39)

पत्तयः पत्तिसंघेन गजारूढाश्च सादिभिः । रथारूढा रथस्थैश्च वाहारूढाश्वसंस्थितैः

pattayaḥ pattisaṁghena gajārūḍhāśca sādibhiḥ rathārūḍhā rathasthaiśca vāhārūḍhāśvasaṁsthitaiḥ

foot-soldiers against ranks of foot-soldiers, elephant-riders against horsemen, charioteers against those on chariots, those mounted on steeds against riders on horses.

Verse 40 (padma.5.23.40)

गजा भिन्ना द्विधा जाता हयाश्च द्विदलीकृताः । अनेकनरमस्तिष्कैर्मेदिनीपूरिता ह्यभूत्

gajā bhinnā dvidhā jātā hayāśca dvidalīkṛtāḥ anekanaramastiṣkairmedinīpūritā hyabhūt

Elephants were split in two, horses cut in half; the earth became filled with the brains of countless men.

Verse 41 (padma.5.23.41)

तदा प्रकुपितो राजा प्रतापाग्र्यो महाबलः । स्वसैन्यकदनोद्युक्तं राजपुत्रं समीक्ष्य च

tadā prakupito rājā pratāpāgryo mahābalaḥ svasainyakadanodyuktaṁ rājaputraṁ samīkṣya ca

Then the enraged King Pratapagrya, mighty, seeing the prince engaged in the slaughter of his own army,

Verse 42 (padma.5.23.42)

उवाच सारथिं तत्र प्रापयाश्वान्यतो मम । सैन्यस्य कदनासक्तो राजपुत्रो महारथः

uvāca sārathiṁ tatra prāpayāśvānyato mama sainyasya kadanāsakto rājaputro mahārathaḥ

said to his charioteer there: "Bring my horses elsewhere — the prince, great charioteer, is intent on the slaughter of my army."

Verse 43 (padma.5.23.43)

अथ वीरशिरोरत्न नमितांघ्रिर्नृपात्मजः । ययौ संमुखमेवास्य प्रतापाग्र्यस्य वीर्यवान्

atha vīraśiroratna namitāṁghrirnṛpātmajaḥ yayau saṁmukhamevāsya pratāpāgryasya vīryavān

Then the prince, his feet bowed to by the crest-jewels of heroes, that valorous one, went straight toward Pratapagrya himself.

Verse 44 (padma.5.23.44)

सारथिः प्रापयामास प्रतापाग्र्यस्य वाजिनः । यत्रासौ दमनो वीरः सर्वशूरशिरोमणिः

sārathiḥ prāpayāmāsa pratāpāgryasya vājinaḥ yatrāsau damano vīraḥ sarvaśūraśiromaṇiḥ

The charioteer brought Pratapagrya's horses to where that hero Damana, crest-jewel of all heroes, stood.

Verse 45 (padma.5.23.45)

गत्वा तमाह्वयामास राजपुत्रं रणोद्यतम् । रथे पुरटनिर्णिक्ते तिष्ठन्कोदंडदंडभृत्

gatvā tamāhvayāmāsa rājaputraṁ raṇodyatam rathe puraṭanirṇikte tiṣṭhankodaṁḍadaṁḍabhṛt

Going there, he challenged the prince, ready for battle, standing in a chariot inlaid with gold, bearing the staff of his bow —

Verse 46 (padma.5.23.46)

रे राजपुत्र क शिशो त्वया बद्धोऽश्वसत्तमः । न ज्ञातोसि महाराजः सर्ववीरेंद्र सेवितः

re rājaputra ka śiśo tvayā baddho'śvasattamaḥ na jñātosi mahārājaḥ sarvavīreṁdra sevitaḥ

"O prince, O child, where have you tied up that finest of horses? You do not know me — a great king, served by all the finest of heroes,"

Verse 47 (padma.5.23.47)

यस्य प्रतापं दैत्येंद्रो न शक्तः सोढुमद्भुतम् । तस्य त्वं वाजिनं नीत्वा गतोऽसि पुटभेदनम्

yasya pratāpaṁ daityeṁdro na śaktaḥ soḍhumadbhutam tasya tvaṁ vājinaṁ nītvā gato'si puṭabhedanam

"whose majesty even the lord of demons could not bear, most wondrous — and you have taken his horse and gone to your own city!"

Verse 48 (padma.5.23.48)

मां जानीहि पुरः प्राप्तं कालरूपं तु वैरिणम् । मुंचाश्वमर्भ गच्छाशु बालक्रीडनकं कुरु

māṁ jānīhi puraḥ prāptaṁ kālarūpaṁ tu vairiṇam muṁcāśvamarbha gacchāśu bālakrīḍanakaṁ kuru

"Know me as an enemy who has come before you, the very form of death itself. Let go of the horse, child; go quickly and play your childish games."

Verse 49 (padma.5.23.49)

कस्यात्मजस्त्वं कुत्रत्यः कथं नोऽदीर्घदर्शिना । धृतोऽश्वस्त्वथ संजाता घृणा मम शिशो त्वयि

kasyātmajastvaṁ kutratyaḥ kathaṁ no'dīrghadarśinā dhṛto'śvastvatha saṁjātā ghṛṇā mama śiśo tvayi

"Whose son are you, from where, that you, so lacking foresight, have seized the horse? A pity has arisen in me for you, child."

Verse 50 (padma.5.23.50)

इत्थमाकर्ण्य दमनः स्मितं चक्रे महामनाः । उवाच च प्रतापाग्र्यं तृणीकुर्वंश्च तद्बलम्

itthamākarṇya damanaḥ smitaṁ cakre mahāmanāḥ uvāca ca pratāpāgryaṁ tṛṇīkurvaṁśca tadbalam

Hearing this, Damana, great-souled, smiled, and spoke to Pratapagrya, treating his army as mere straw —

Verse 51 (padma.5.23.51)

दमन उवाच। मया बद्धो बलादश्वो नीतः स्वपुटभेदनम् । नार्पयिष्येऽद्य सप्राणः कुरु युद्धं महाबल

damana uvāca mayā baddho balādaśvo nītaḥ svapuṭabhedanam nārpayiṣye'dya saprāṇaḥ kuru yuddhaṁ mahābala

Damana said: "By me the horse was seized by force and taken to my own city; I shall not surrender it today while I still breathe — fight, mighty one!"

Verse 52 (padma.5.23.52)

त्वया यदुक्तं बालस्त्वं गत्वा क्रीडनकं कुरु । तन्मे पश्य महाराज क्रीडनं रणमूर्धनि

tvayā yaduktaṁ bālastvaṁ gatvā krīḍanakaṁ kuru tanme paśya mahārāja krīḍanaṁ raṇamūrdhani

"You said, 'You are a child, go and play' — behold now, great king, my play at the head of the battlefield!"

Verse 53 (padma.5.23.53)

शेष उवाच। इत्युक्त्वा सगुणं चापं विधाय सुभुजां गजः । शराणां शतमाधत्त प्रतापाग्र्यस्य वक्षसि

śeṣa uvāca ityuktvā saguṇaṁ cāpaṁ vidhāya subhujāṁ gajaḥ śarāṇāṁ śatamādhatta pratāpāgryasya vakṣasi

Shesha said: Having said this, that elephant among the mighty-armed, stringing his bow, lodged a hundred arrows in Pratapagrya's chest.

Verse 54 (padma.5.23.54)

संधाय बाणशतकं शंखं दध्मौ प्रतापवान् । तेन शंखनिनादेन कातराणां भयं ह्यभूत्

saṁdhāya bāṇaśatakaṁ śaṁkhaṁ dadhmau pratāpavān tena śaṁkhaninādena kātarāṇāṁ bhayaṁ hyabhūt

Having fitted a hundred arrows, that man of valor blew his conch; by that conch-blast, fear arose in the timid.

Verse 55 (padma.5.23.55)

ताडयामास हृदये बाणानां शतकेन सः । प्रतापाग्र्यः प्रचिच्छेद लघुहस्तः सुपर्वणः

tāḍayāmāsa hṛdaye bāṇānāṁ śatakena saḥ pratāpāgryaḥ praciccheda laghuhastaḥ suparvaṇaḥ

He struck him in the heart with a hundred arrows; Pratapagrya, his hand swift, cut them apart with well-jointed arrows.

Verse 56 (padma.5.23.56)

स बाणच्छेदनं दृष्ट्वा कुपितो व्यसृजच्छरान् । कंकपक्षान्वितांस्तीक्ष्णभल्लान्राजात्मजो बली

sa bāṇacchedanaṁ dṛṣṭvā kupito vyasṛjaccharān kaṁkapakṣānvitāṁstīkṣṇabhallānrājātmajo balī

Seeing his arrows thus severed, the enraged, mighty prince let loose arrows fletched with heron-feathers, sharp broadheads.

Verse 57 (padma.5.23.57)

आकाशे भुवि मध्ये च बाणा ददृशिरेऽञ्चिताः । स्वनामचिह्नितास्तीक्ष्णधारापातसुशोभिताः

ākāśe bhuvi madhye ca bāṇā dadṛśire'ñcitāḥ svanāmacihnitāstīkṣṇadhārāpātasuśobhitāḥ

In the sky, on the earth, and in between, the arrows were seen, elegantly arrayed, marked with their own names, resplendent with sharp, falling edges.

Verse 58 (padma.5.23.58)

शरास्तद्बाहु हृदये लग्ना वह्निकणान्बहून् । सृजंतः कुर्वते सैन्यदाहनं तदभून्महत्

śarāstadbāhu hṛdaye lagnā vahnikaṇānbahūn sṛjaṁtaḥ kurvate sainyadāhanaṁ tadabhūnmahat

The arrows, lodged in his arm and heart, released many sparks of fire, causing a great burning of the army there.

Verse 59 (padma.5.23.59)

प्रतापाग्र्यः प्रकुपितस्तिष्ठतिष्ठेति च ब्रुवन् । शरेण दशसंख्येन ताडयामास मूर्धनि

pratāpāgryaḥ prakupitastiṣṭhatiṣṭheti ca bruvan śareṇa daśasaṁkhyena tāḍayāmāsa mūrdhani

Pratapagrya, enraged, crying "Stay, stay!" struck him on the head with ten arrows.

Verse 60 (padma.5.23.60)

ते बाणा राजपुत्रस्य ललाटे परिनिष्ठिताः । विराजंते स्म च मुने दशशाखास्तरोरिव

te bāṇā rājaputrasya lalāṭe pariniṣṭhitāḥ virājaṁte sma ca mune daśaśākhāstaroriva

Those arrows, lodged firmly in the prince's forehead, shone, O sage, like the ten branches of a tree.

Verse 61 (padma.5.23.61)

तेन बाणप्रहारेण विव्यथेन महामनाः । यष्टिकाप्रहतो यद्वत्कुंजरः सप्तवर्षकः

tena bāṇaprahāreṇa vivyathena mahāmanāḥ yaṣṭikāprahato yadvatkuṁjaraḥ saptavarṣakaḥ

By that blow of arrows, that great-souled one was pained, like a seven-year-old elephant struck with a switch.

Verse 62 (padma.5.23.62)

बाणान्धनुषि संधाय मुमोच त्रिशताञ्छुभान् । सुवर्णपुंखरचितान्महाकालानलोपमान्

bāṇāndhanuṣi saṁdhāya mumoca triśatāñchubhān suvarṇapuṁkharacitānmahākālānalopamān

Fitting arrows to his bow, he loosed three hundred fine ones, fashioned with golden nocks, like the very fire of doomsday.

Verse 63 (padma.5.23.63)

ते बाणास्तु प्रतापाग्र्य वक्षो भित्त्वा गता ह्यधः । शोणिताक्ता यथा रामचंद्र भक्ति पराङ्मुखाः

te bāṇāstu pratāpāgrya vakṣo bhittvā gatā hyadhaḥ śoṇitāktā yathā rāmacaṁdra bhakti parāṅmukhāḥ

Those arrows, piercing through Pratapagrya's chest, went on below, stained with blood, like those turned away from devotion to Ramachandra.

Verse 64 (padma.5.23.64)

प्रतापाग्र्यः प्रकुपितः शरान्मुंचन्सहस्रशः । अकरोद्विरथं सूनुं सुबाहोस्तत्क्षणाद्द्रुतम्

pratāpāgryaḥ prakupitaḥ śarānmuṁcansahasraśaḥ akarodvirathaṁ sūnuṁ subāhostatkṣaṇāddrutam

Pratapagrya, enraged, loosing arrows by the thousand, at once made Subahu's son chariotless, swiftly, that very instant.

Verse 65 (padma.5.23.65)

चतुर्भिश्च तुरो वाहान्द्वाभ्यां ध्वजमशातयत् । एकेन सारथेः कायाच्छिरो मह्यामपातयत्

caturbhiśca turo vāhāndvābhyāṁ dhvajamaśātayat ekena sāratheḥ kāyācchiro mahyāmapātayat

With four he struck down his horses, with two he cut down his banner, with one he felled the charioteer's head to the ground.

Verse 66 (padma.5.23.66)

चतुर्भिस्ताडयामास तं सूनुं नृपतेः पुनः । तत्क्षणाच्चापमेकेन गुणयुक्तं तु चिच्छिदे

caturbhistāḍayāmāsa taṁ sūnuṁ nṛpateḥ punaḥ tatkṣaṇāccāpamekena guṇayuktaṁ tu cicchide

With four more he struck the king's son again; at that instant, with one arrow, he cut his bow, strung as it was.

Verse 67 (padma.5.23.67)

सोऽन्यरथं समारुह्य हयरत्नसुशोभितम् । धनुः करे समादाय सज्यं चक्रे महामनाः

so'nyarathaṁ samāruhya hayaratnasuśobhitam dhanuḥ kare samādāya sajyaṁ cakre mahāmanāḥ

He then mounted another chariot, resplendent with jeweled horses, and, taking his bow in hand, that great-souled one strung it.

Verse 68 (padma.5.23.68)

प्रत्युवाच प्रतापाग्र्यं त्वया विक्रांतमद्भुतम् । पश्येदानीं पराक्रांतिं धनुषो मम सद्भट

pratyuvāca pratāpāgryaṁ tvayā vikrāṁtamadbhutam paśyedānīṁ parākrāṁtiṁ dhanuṣo mama sadbhaṭa

He replied to Pratapagrya: "Wondrous indeed has been your valor; now behold the power of my bow, good warrior!"

Verse 69 (padma.5.23.69)

एवमुक्त्वा तु दमनो बाणान्दश समाददे । चतुर्भिश्चतुरो वाहान्निनाय यमसादनम्

evamuktvā tu damano bāṇāndaśa samādade caturbhiścaturo vāhānnināya yamasādanam

Having said this, Damana took up ten arrows; with four he sent the four horses to the abode of Yama.

Verse 70 (padma.5.23.70)

चतुर्भिस्तिलशः कृत्तो रथश्चक्रसमन्वितः । एकेन हृदि विव्याध बाणेनैकेन सारथिम्

caturbhistilaśaḥ kṛtto rathaścakrasamanvitaḥ ekena hṛdi vivyādha bāṇenaikena sārathim

With four more the chariot, together with its wheel, was cut to pieces; with one arrow he pierced his heart, with one the charioteer.

Verse 71 (padma.5.23.71)

जगर्ज शंखमापूर्य शंखशब्दसमन्वितः । तत्कर्म पूजयामास साधु वीर महाबल

jagarja śaṁkhamāpūrya śaṁkhaśabdasamanvitaḥ tatkarma pūjayāmāsa sādhu vīra mahābala

He roared, having blown his conch, filled with the sound of the conch; that deed was praised: "Well done, hero, mighty one!"

Verse 72 (padma.5.23.72)

इति विक्रांतमालोक्य प्रतापाग्र्यो रुषान्वितः । अन्यं रथं समास्थाय ययौ योद्धुं नृपात्मजम्

iti vikrāṁtamālokya pratāpāgryo ruṣānvitaḥ anyaṁ rathaṁ samāsthāya yayau yoddhuṁ nṛpātmajam

Seeing this valor, Pratapagrya, filled with fury, mounted another chariot and went to fight the prince —

Verse 73 (padma.5.23.73)

उवाच वीर पश्य त्वं मम विक्रांतमद्भुतम् । इत्युक्त्वाशु मुमोचौघाञ्छराणां शितपर्वणाम्

uvāca vīra paśya tvaṁ mama vikrāṁtamadbhutam ityuktvāśu mumocaughāñcharāṇāṁ śitaparvaṇām

and said: "Hero, behold my own wondrous valor!" Having said this, he swiftly loosed a flood of sharp, well-jointed arrows.

Verse 74 (padma.5.23.74)

शराः सर्वत्र दृश्यंते कुंजरेषु हयेषु च । परब्रह्मेव सर्वत्र व्याप्ताश्चांतरगोचराः

śarāḥ sarvatra dṛśyaṁte kuṁjareṣu hayeṣu ca parabrahmeva sarvatra vyāptāścāṁtaragocarāḥ

Arrows were seen everywhere, on elephants and on horses, pervading everything, unseen within, like the Supreme Brahman.

Verse 75 (padma.5.23.75)

तं राजपुत्रं शितबाणकोटिभि -। र्व्याप्तं विधायाशु जगर्ज विक्रमी । संहर्षयन्स्वीयगणान्परान्महान् । कुर्वन्हृदा शून्यतमान्गतासुकान्

taṁ rājaputraṁ śitabāṇakoṭibhi - rvyāptaṁ vidhāyāśu jagarja vikramī saṁharṣayansvīyagaṇānparānmahān kurvanhṛdā śūnyatamāngatāsukān

Having thus covered that prince with millions of sharpened arrows, the valorous one roared, delighting his own troops, making the enemy's great warriors empty of heart, their lives departed.

Verse 76 (padma.5.23.76)

स राजपुत्रः शितसायकव्रजैः । संपूर्णमात्मानमवेक्ष्य रोषितः । जग्राह शस्त्राणि दुरंतविक्रमो । धनुश्च धुन्वन्भुजदंडयोर्महान्

sa rājaputraḥ śitasāyakavrajaiḥ saṁpūrṇamātmānamavekṣya roṣitaḥ jagrāha śastrāṇi duraṁtavikramo dhanuśca dhunvanbhujadaṁḍayormahān

The prince, seeing himself completely covered by that swarm of sharpened arrows, enraged, of boundless valor, took up his weapons, shaking his bow with his mighty two arms.

Verse 77 (padma.5.23.77)

चकर्त सर्वाण्यस्त्राणि शस्त्राणि च महाबलः । रोषताम्रेक्षणो मुंचञ्छरान्वैरिविदारिणः

cakarta sarvāṇyastrāṇi śastrāṇi ca mahābalaḥ roṣatāmrekṣaṇo muṁcañcharānvairividāriṇaḥ

That mighty one cut apart all the missiles and weapons, his eyes red with rage, loosing arrows that rend the enemy.

Verse 78 (padma.5.23.78)

तच्छस्त्रजालं निर्धूय राजपुत्रो जगाद तम् । क्षमस्वैकं प्रहारं मे यदि शूरोसि मारिष

tacchastrajālaṁ nirdhūya rājaputro jagāda tam kṣamasvaikaṁ prahāraṁ me yadi śūrosi māriṣa

Having shaken off that web of weapons, the prince said to him: "Forgive me one blow of mine, if you are truly a hero, sir —"

Verse 79 (padma.5.23.79)

यद्यनेन भवंतं वै रथाच्चेत्पातयामि न । प्रतिज्ञां शृणु मे वीर मम गर्वेण निर्मिताम्

yadyanena bhavaṁtaṁ vai rathāccetpātayāmi na pratijñāṁ śṛṇu me vīra mama garveṇa nirmitām

"if by this I do not throw you down from your chariot — hear, hero, this vow made in my pride:"

Verse 80 (padma.5.23.80)

वेदं निंदंति ये मत्ता हेतुवादविचक्षणाः । तेषां पापं ममैवास्तु नरकार्णवमज्जकम्

vedaṁ niṁdaṁti ye mattā hetuvādavicakṣaṇāḥ teṣāṁ pāpaṁ mamaivāstu narakārṇavamajjakam

"whatever sin belongs to those arrogant men, skilled in mere logic-chopping, who revile the Veda, let that same sin be mine, dragging me down to drown in the ocean of hell!"

Verse 81 (padma.5.23.81)

इत्युक्त्वा बाणमासाद्य कोदंडे कालसन्निभम् । ज्वालामालाकुलं तीक्ष्णं निषंगादुद्धृतं वरम्

ityuktvā bāṇamāsādya kodaṁḍe kālasannibham jvālāmālākulaṁ tīkṣṇaṁ niṣaṁgāduddhṛtaṁ varam

Having said this, he took up, upon his bow, an arrow like death itself, wreathed in flame, sharp, the finest, drawn from his quiver.

Verse 82 (padma.5.23.82)

स मुक्तो नृपवर्येण हृदि लक्ष्यीकृतः शरः । जगाम तरसा तं वै कालानलसमप्रभः

sa mukto nṛpavaryeṇa hṛdi lakṣyīkṛtaḥ śaraḥ jagāma tarasā taṁ vai kālānalasamaprabhaḥ

That arrow, released by the finest of kings, aimed at his heart, went swiftly toward him, radiant as the fire of doomsday.

Verse 83 (padma.5.23.83)

प्रतापाग्र्यः शरं दृष्ट्वा स्वपातनसमुद्यतम् । बाणान्धनुष्यथाधत्त शरच्छेदायवै शितान्

pratāpāgryaḥ śaraṁ dṛṣṭvā svapātanasamudyatam bāṇāndhanuṣyathādhatta śaracchedāyavai śitān

Pratapagrya, seeing that arrow intent on his own fall, then fitted sharp arrows to his bow, to cut down that arrow.

Verse 84 (padma.5.23.84)

स बाणः सर्वबाणांस्तांश्छिंदन्मध्यत एव हि । जगाम वै प्रतापाग्र्यहृदयं धैर्यसंयुतम्

sa bāṇaḥ sarvabāṇāṁstāṁśchiṁdanmadhyata eva hi jagāma vai pratāpāgryahṛdayaṁ dhairyasaṁyutam

That arrow, cutting through all those arrows right in their midst, went straight to Pratapagrya's own heart, steadfast though it was.

Verse 85 (padma.5.23.85)

संलग्नो हृदि नालीकः प्रविवेश तदंतरम् । राजाकृतप्रहारस्तु पपात धरणीतले

saṁlagno hṛdi nālīkaḥ praviveśa tadaṁtaram rājākṛtaprahārastu papāta dharaṇītale

The reed-shaft, lodged in his heart, entered within; struck by that blow, the king fell to the surface of the earth.

Verse 86 (padma.5.23.86)

मूर्च्छितं चेतनाहीनं रथोपस्थाद्गतं भुवि । सारथिस्तं समादायापोवाह रणमंडलात्

mūrcchitaṁ cetanāhīnaṁ rathopasthādgataṁ bhuvi sārathistaṁ samādāyāpovāha raṇamaṁḍalāt

Fainted, senseless, fallen from his chariot's seat to the ground, the charioteer took him up and bore him away from the field of battle.

Verse 87 (padma.5.23.87)

हाहाकारोमहानासीद्बलं भग्नं गतं ततः । यत्र शत्रुघ्ननामासौ वीरकोटिपरीवृतः

hāhākāromahānāsīdbalaṁ bhagnaṁ gataṁ tataḥ yatra śatrughnanāmāsau vīrakoṭiparīvṛtaḥ

A great cry of "Alas! Alas!" arose; the army was broken and fled, toward where that one named Shatrughna stood, surrounded by countless heroes.

Verse 88 (padma.5.23.88)

राजात्मजो जयं प्राप्य प्रतापाग्र्यं विजित्य सः । प्रतीक्षां तु चकारास्य शत्रुघ्नस्य च भूपतेः

rājātmajo jayaṁ prāpya pratāpāgryaṁ vijitya saḥ pratīkṣāṁ tu cakārāsya śatrughnasya ca bhūpateḥ

The prince, having attained victory, having defeated Pratapagrya, then awaited that very Shatrughna, lord of the earth.
