Defeat of Subahu
Verse 1 (padma.5.28.1)
शेष उवाच। अथ पुत्रं समालोक्य पतितं व्यसुमुद्धतम् । विललाप भृशं राजा सुतदुःखेन दुःखितः
śeṣa uvāca atha putraṁ samālokya patitaṁ vyasumuddhatam vilalāpa bhṛśaṁ rājā sutaduḥkhena duḥkhitaḥ
Shesha said: Then, beholding his son fallen, lifeless, cast down, the king, grieved by his son's suffering, wailed greatly.
Verse 2 (padma.5.28.2)
मूर्ध्नि संताडयामास पाणिभ्यामतिदुःखितः । कम्पमानो भृशं चाश्रूण्यमुञ्चन्नयनाब्जयोः
mūrdhni saṁtāḍayāmāsa pāṇibhyāmatiduḥkhitaḥ kampamāno bhṛśaṁ cāśrūṇyamuñcannayanābjayoḥ
Striking his own head with both hands, exceedingly grieved, trembling greatly, tears flowing from his lotus eyes,
Verse 3 (padma.5.28.3)
गृहीत्वा पतितं वक्त्रं चंद्रबिंबमनोरमम् । पुष्कलेषु क्षतासृग्भिः क्लिन्नं कुंडलशोभितम्
gṛhītvā patitaṁ vaktraṁ caṁdrabiṁbamanoramam puṣkaleṣu kṣatāsṛgbhiḥ klinnaṁ kuṁḍalaśobhitam
taking up that fallen face, lovely as the orb of the moon, soaked with the blood of wounds among the flowers, adorned with earrings,
Verse 4 (padma.5.28.4)
कुटिलभ्रूयुगं श्रेष्ठं संदष्टाधरपल्लवम् । स चुंबन्मुखपद्मेन विलपन्निदमब्रवीत्
kuṭilabhrūyugaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ saṁdaṣṭādharapallavam sa cuṁbanmukhapadmena vilapannidamabravīt
its pair of brows crooked, its lips bitten, that finest one — kissing that lotus-face, lamenting, he said this:
Verse 5 (padma.5.28.5)
हा पुत्र वीर कथमुत्सुकचेतसं मां । किं नेक्षसे विशदनेत्रयुगेन शूर । किं मद्विनोदकथयारहितस्त्वमेव । रोषोदधिप्लुतमनाः किल लक्ष्यसे च
hā putra vīra kathamutsukacetasaṁ māṁ kiṁ nekṣase viśadanetrayugena śūra kiṁ madvinodakathayārahitastvameva roṣodadhiplutamanāḥ kila lakṣyase ca
"Alas, hero son! How is it that you, once so eager toward me, do you not look at me now with your bright pair of eyes, hero? Are you now devoid of the words that once delighted me, your mind drowned, as it seems, in an ocean of rage?"
Verse 6 (padma.5.28.6)
वद पुत्र कथं मां त्वं प्रब्रूषे न हसन्पुनः । अमृतैर्मधुरास्वादैर्विनोदयसि पुत्रक
vada putra kathaṁ māṁ tvaṁ prabrūṣe na hasanpunaḥ amṛtairmadhurāsvādairvinodayasi putraka
"Tell me, son, why do you not speak to me, laughing as before? Why do you not delight me, dear child, with your sweet, nectar-like words?"
Verse 7 (padma.5.28.7)
शत्रुघ्नाश्वं गृहाण त्वं सितचामरशोभितम् । स्वर्णपत्रेण शोभाढ्यं त्यज निद्रां महामते
śatrughnāśvaṁ gṛhāṇa tvaṁ sitacāmaraśobhitam svarṇapatreṇa śobhāḍhyaṁ tyaja nidrāṁ mahāmate
"Take up Shatrughna's horse, adorned with its white chowrie, resplendent with its golden document — abandon this sleep, greatly wise one."
Verse 8 (padma.5.28.8)
एष प्रतापविशदः प्रतापाग्र्यः परंतपः । धनुर्बिभ्रत्पुरो भाति पुष्कलः परवीरहा
eṣa pratāpaviśadaḥ pratāpāgryaḥ paraṁtapaḥ dhanurbibhratpuro bhāti puṣkalaḥ paravīrahā
"Here stands before us, radiant with valor, Pratapagrya, scorcher of foes, and Pushkala, slayer of enemy heroes, bow in hand."
Verse 9 (padma.5.28.9)
एनं वारय सत्तीक्ष्णैर्बाणैः कोदंडनिर्गतैः । कथं त्वं रणमध्ये वै शेते वीरविमोहितः
enaṁ vāraya sattīkṣṇairbāṇaiḥ kodaṁḍanirgataiḥ kathaṁ tvaṁ raṇamadhye vai śete vīravimohitaḥ
"Ward him off with your own sharp arrows, loosed from your bow — how is it that you lie in the midst of battle, deluded, hero?"
Verse 10 (padma.5.28.10)
हस्तिनः पत्तयश्चैव रथारूढा भयार्दिताः । शरणं त्वां समायांति तानीक्षस्व महामते
hastinaḥ pattayaścaiva rathārūḍhā bhayārditāḥ śaraṇaṁ tvāṁ samāyāṁti tānīkṣasva mahāmate
"Elephants and foot-soldiers, and those mounted on chariots, terror-stricken, come to you for refuge — look upon them, greatly wise one!"
Verse 11 (padma.5.28.11)
पुत्र त्वया विना सोढुं कथं शक्तो रणांगणे । शत्रुघ्नसायकांस्तीक्ष्णांश्चंडकोदंडनिर्गतान्
putra tvayā vinā soḍhuṁ kathaṁ śakto raṇāṁgaṇe śatrughnasāyakāṁstīkṣṇāṁścaṁḍakodaṁḍanirgatān
"Son, without you, how can I bear, in the field of battle, Shatrughna's sharp arrows, loosed from his fierce bow?"
Verse 12 (padma.5.28.12)
अतो मां तु त्वया हीनं को वा पालयितुं क्षमः । यदि त्यक्ष्यसि निद्रा त्वं जयायाहं क्षमस्तदा
ato māṁ tu tvayā hīnaṁ ko vā pālayituṁ kṣamaḥ yadi tyakṣyasi nidrā tvaṁ jayāyāhaṁ kṣamastadā
"Therefore, who is capable of protecting me, bereft of you? If you will but abandon this sleep, then I too am capable of victory!"
Verse 13 (padma.5.28.13)
इत्थं विलप्य सुभृशं तताड हृदयं स्वकम् । बहुशः पाणिना राजा पुत्रदुःखेन दुःखितः
itthaṁ vilapya subhṛśaṁ tatāḍa hṛdayaṁ svakam bahuśaḥ pāṇinā rājā putraduḥkhena duḥkhitaḥ
Thus lamenting exceedingly, the king, grieved by his son's suffering, struck his own heart again and again with his hand.
Verse 14 (padma.5.28.14)
तदा विचित्र दमनौ स्व स्व स्यंदनसंस्थितौ । पितुश्चरणयोर्नत्वा ऊचतुः समयोचितम्
tadā vicitra damanau sva sva syaṁdanasaṁsthitau pituścaraṇayornatvā ūcatuḥ samayocitam
Then Vichitra and Damana, each stationed in his own chariot, bowing at their father's feet, spoke words fitting to the moment —
Verse 15 (padma.5.28.15)
राजन्नस्मासु जीवत्सु किं दुःखं हृदि तद्वद । वीराणां प्रधने मृत्युर्वांच्छितो जायते महान्
rājannasmāsu jīvatsu kiṁ duḥkhaṁ hṛdi tadvada vīrāṇāṁ pradhane mṛtyurvāṁcchito jāyate mahān
"O king, while we still live, what is this grief in your heart? Tell us. A great, desired death in battle is granted to heroes."
Verse 16 (padma.5.28.16)
धन्योऽयं बत चित्रांगो यो वीर भुवि शोभते । सकिरीटस्तु संदष्टदंतच्छदयुगः प्रभुः
dhanyo'yaṁ bata citrāṁgo yo vīra bhuvi śobhate sakirīṭastu saṁdaṣṭadaṁtacchadayugaḥ prabhuḥ
"Blessed indeed is this Chitranga, who now, hero, shines upon the earth, his crown upon him, his pair of lips bitten together, a very lord."
Verse 17 (padma.5.28.17)
कथयाशु किमद्यैव कुर्वस्ते कार्यमीप्सितम् । शत्रुघ्नवाहिनीं सर्वां हन्व आवामनाथिनीम्
kathayāśu kimadyaiva kurvaste kāryamīpsitam śatrughnavāhinīṁ sarvāṁ hanva āvāmanāthinīm
"Tell us quickly what task you wish accomplished this very day; we shall slay the entire army of Shatrughna, leaving it defenseless."
Verse 18 (padma.5.28.18)
अद्यैव पुष्कलं भ्रातुर्वधकारिणमाहवे । पातयावो रथाच्छित्त्वा शिरोमुकुटमंडितम्
adyaiva puṣkalaṁ bhrāturvadhakāriṇamāhave pātayāvo rathācchittvā śiromukuṭamaṁḍitam
"This very day, in battle, we shall fell Pushkala, slayer of our brother, cutting off his crowned head from his chariot."
Verse 19 (padma.5.28.19)
त्यज शोकं सुदुःखार्तः कथं भासि महामते । आज्ञापयावां मानार्ह कुरु युद्धे मतिं तथा
tyaja śokaṁ suduḥkhārtaḥ kathaṁ bhāsi mahāmate ājñāpayāvāṁ mānārha kuru yuddhe matiṁ tathā
"Abandon your grief, so overcome with sorrow — why do you appear thus, greatly wise one? Command us, worthy of honor, and set your mind to battle."
Verse 20 (padma.5.28.20)
इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य पुत्रयोर्वीरमानिनोः । शोकं त्यक्त्वा महाराजो युद्धाय मतिमादधात्
iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya putrayorvīramāninoḥ śokaṁ tyaktvā mahārājo yuddhāya matimādadhāt
Hearing these words of his two sons, proud in their heroism, the great king, abandoning his grief, resolved upon battle.
Verse 21 (padma.5.28.21)
तावपि प्रतियोद्धारं वांच्छंतौ रणदुर्मदौ । जग्मतुः कटके शत्रोरनंतभटपूरिते
tāvapi pratiyoddhāraṁ vāṁcchaṁtau raṇadurmadau jagmatuḥ kaṭake śatroranaṁtabhaṭapūrite
They too, desiring an opposing warrior, fierce for combat, went into the enemy's camp, filled with countless soldiers.
Verse 22 (padma.5.28.22)
रिपुतापेन दमनो नीलरत्नेन चेतरः । युयुधाते रणे वीरौ प्रावृषीव बलाहकौ
riputāpena damano nīlaratnena cetaraḥ yuyudhāte raṇe vīrau prāvṛṣīva balāhakau
Damana fought Riputapa, the other fought Nilaratna; the two heroes battled like storm-clouds in the rainy season.
Verse 23 (padma.5.28.23)
राजा कनकसन्नद्धे रथे मणिविचित्रिते । रत्नकूबरशोभाढ्ये तिष्ठंश्चापधरो बली
rājā kanakasannaddhe rathe maṇivicitrite ratnakūbaraśobhāḍhye tiṣṭhaṁścāpadharo balī
The king, mighty, standing in his chariot fitted with gold, wondrously set with gems, resplendent with a jeweled pole, bow in hand,
Verse 24 (padma.5.28.24)
ययौ योद्धुं तु शत्रुघ्नं वीरकोटभिरावृतम् । तृणीकुर्वन्महावीरान्धनुर्विद्याविशारदान्
yayau yoddhuṁ tu śatrughnaṁ vīrakoṭabhirāvṛtam tṛṇīkurvanmahāvīrāndhanurvidyāviśāradān
went to fight Shatrughna, surrounded by countless heroes, treating even the great heroes, learned in the art of the bow, as mere straw.
Verse 25 (padma.5.28.25)
तं योद्धुमागतं दृष्ट्वा सुबाहुं रोषपूरितम् । पुत्रनाशेन कुर्वंतं सर्वसैन्यवधादिकम्
taṁ yoddhumāgataṁ dṛṣṭvā subāhuṁ roṣapūritam putranāśena kurvaṁtaṁ sarvasainyavadhādikam
Seeing him come to fight, Subahu, filled with rage, bringing about, through the loss of his son, the slaughter of the entire army,
Verse 26 (padma.5.28.26)
शत्रुघ्नपार्श्वसंचारी हनूमांस्तमुपाद्रवत् । नखायुधो महानादं कुर्वन्मेघ इवाहवे
śatrughnapārśvasaṁcārī hanūmāṁstamupādravat nakhāyudho mahānādaṁ kurvanmegha ivāhave
Hanuman, who moved at Shatrughna's side, rushed at him, weapon of his own claws, roaring greatly like a cloud in battle.
Verse 27 (padma.5.28.27)
सुबाहुस्तं हनूमंतमागच्छंतं महारवम् । उवाच प्रहसन्वाक्यं रोषपूरितलोचनः
subāhustaṁ hanūmaṁtamāgacchaṁtaṁ mahāravam uvāca prahasanvākyaṁ roṣapūritalocanaḥ
Subahu, seeing Hanuman approaching with a great roar, spoke, laughing, his eyes filled with rage —
Verse 28 (padma.5.28.28)
क्व गतः पुष्कलो हत्वा मत्पुत्रं रणमंडले । पातयाम्यद्य तस्याशु शिरो ज्वलितकुंडलम्
kva gataḥ puṣkalo hatvā matputraṁ raṇamaṁḍale pātayāmyadya tasyāśu śiro jvalitakuṁḍalam
"Where has Pushkala gone, having slain my son on the field of battle? Today I shall at once fell his head, blazing with earrings!"
Verse 29 (padma.5.28.29)
क्व शत्रुघ्नो वाहपालः क्व च रामः कुतो भटाः । प्राणहंतारमायांतं पश्यंतु प्रधने तु माम्
kva śatrughno vāhapālaḥ kva ca rāmaḥ kuto bhaṭāḥ prāṇahaṁtāramāyāṁtaṁ paśyaṁtu pradhane tu mām
"Where is Shatrughna, guardian of the horse? Where is Rama? Where are the warriors? Let them see me, the very taker of life, coming into battle!"
Verse 30 (padma.5.28.30)
इति तद्वाक्यमाकर्ण्य हनूमान्निजगाद तम् । शत्रुघ्नो लवणच्छेत्ता वर्तते सैन्यपालकः
iti tadvākyamākarṇya hanūmānnijagāda tam śatrughno lavaṇacchettā vartate sainyapālakaḥ
Hearing these words, Hanuman said to him: "Shatrughna, slayer of Lavana, remains the protector of the army."
Verse 31 (padma.5.28.31)
स कथं प्रधने युध्येत्सेवकेऽग्रे स्थिते नृप । मां विजित्य रणे तं च त्वं गंतासि नरर्षभ
sa kathaṁ pradhane yudhyetsevake'gre sthite nṛpa māṁ vijitya raṇe taṁ ca tvaṁ gaṁtāsi nararṣabha
"How could he fight in battle, O king, while a servant stands before you? Having conquered me in battle, you shall then go to him, bull among men."
Verse 32 (padma.5.28.32)
इत्युक्तवंतं तरसा विव्याध दशसायकैः । हृदि वानरमत्युग्रं पर्वताग्र्यमिवस्थितम्
ityuktavaṁtaṁ tarasā vivyādha daśasāyakaiḥ hṛdi vānaramatyugraṁ parvatāgryamivasthitam
To him speaking thus, he swiftly pierced with ten arrows the heart of that most fierce monkey, standing there like the finest of mountains.
Verse 33 (padma.5.28.33)
सबाणानागतांस्तांश्च गृहीत्वा करसंपुटे । चूर्णयामास तिलशः शितान्वैरिविदारणान्
sabāṇānāgatāṁstāṁśca gṛhītvā karasaṁpuṭe cūrṇayāmāsa tilaśaḥ śitānvairividāraṇān
Those arrows, come at him along with their shafts, he seized in the hollow of his hand and ground to fragments like sesame seeds, sharp, though they were renders of the enemy.
Verse 34 (padma.5.28.34)
चूर्णयित्वा शरांस्तांस्तु निनदन्घनगर्जितैः । पुच्छेनावेष्ट्य तस्योच्चै रथं निन्ये महाबलः
cūrṇayitvā śarāṁstāṁstu ninadanghanagarjitaiḥ pucchenāveṣṭya tasyoccai rathaṁ ninye mahābalaḥ
Having ground those arrows, roaring with a sound like a thundercloud, that mighty one wrapped his tail about the king's chariot and bore it aloft.
Verse 35 (padma.5.28.35)
तदा तं नृपवर्योऽसावाकाशे स्थित एव सः । लांगूलं ताडयामास शिताग्रैः सायकैर्मुहुः
tadā taṁ nṛpavaryo'sāvākāśe sthita eva saḥ lāṁgūlaṁ tāḍayāmāsa śitāgraiḥ sāyakairmuhuḥ
Then, while he, that finest of kings, remained fixed in the sky, he struck at his tail, again and again, with sharp-tipped arrows.
Verse 36 (padma.5.28.36)
स ताडितस्तु पुच्छाग्रे शरैः सन्नतपर्वभिः । मुमोच तद्रथं दिव्यं कनकेन विचित्रितम्
sa tāḍitastu pucchāgre śaraiḥ sannataparvabhiḥ mumoca tadrathaṁ divyaṁ kanakena vicitritam
Struck upon the tip of his tail by well-jointed arrows, he released that divine chariot, wondrously wrought in gold.
Verse 37 (padma.5.28.37)
स मुक्तस्तेन तरसा शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्जघान तम् । हनूमंतं कपिवरं रोषसंपूरितेक्षणः
sa muktastena tarasā śaraistīkṣṇairjaghāna tam hanūmaṁtaṁ kapivaraṁ roṣasaṁpūritekṣaṇaḥ
Released, he, his eyes filled with rage, swiftly struck that finest of monkeys, Hanuman, with sharp arrows.
Verse 38 (padma.5.28.38)
हनूमान्बाणविच्छिन्नः सर्वत्ररुधिराप्लुतः । महारोषं समाधत्त नृपोपरि कपीश्वरः
hanūmānbāṇavicchinnaḥ sarvatrarudhirāplutaḥ mahāroṣaṁ samādhatta nṛpopari kapīśvaraḥ
Hanuman, cut by those arrows, drenched in blood everywhere, that lord of monkeys, took up great fury against the king.
Verse 39 (padma.5.28.39)
गृहीत्वा तस्य दंष्ट्राभी रथं हयसमन्वितम् । चूर्णयामस वेगेन तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
gṛhītvā tasya daṁṣṭrābhī rathaṁ hayasamanvitam cūrṇayāmasa vegena tadadbhutamivābhavat
Seizing, with his very fangs, his chariot together with its horses, he ground it to powder with great speed — it seemed a wonder indeed.
Verse 40 (padma.5.28.40)
स्वरथं भज्यमानं तु दृष्ट्वा राजा त्वरन्बली । अन्यं रथं समास्थाय युयुधे तं महाबलम्
svarathaṁ bhajyamānaṁ tu dṛṣṭvā rājā tvaranbalī anyaṁ rathaṁ samāsthāya yuyudhe taṁ mahābalam
Seeing his own chariot thus being broken, the mighty king, swiftly mounting another chariot, fought that mighty one.
Verse 41 (padma.5.28.41)
पुच्छे मुखेऽथोरसि च भुजे चरणयोर्नृपः । जघान शरसंधानकोविदः परमास्त्रवित्
pucche mukhe'thorasi ca bhuje caraṇayornṛpaḥ jaghāna śarasaṁdhānakovidaḥ paramāstravit
At the tail, at the face, at the chest, at the arm, and at the two feet, the king, skilled in the fitting of arrows, supreme knower of weapons, struck him.
Verse 42 (padma.5.28.42)
तदा क्रुद्धः कपिवरस्ताडयामास वक्षसि । पादेनोत्प्लुत्य वेगेन राज्ञः सुभटशोभिनः
tadā kruddhaḥ kapivarastāḍayāmāsa vakṣasi pādenotplutya vegena rājñaḥ subhaṭaśobhinaḥ
Then the enraged lord of monkeys, leaping up with speed, struck with his foot the chest of that king, resplendent among fine warriors.
Verse 43 (padma.5.28.43)
स पदा प्रहतो भूमौ पपात किल मूर्च्छितः । मुखाद्वमन्नसृक्चोष्णं श्वासपूरप्रवेपितः
sa padā prahato bhūmau papāta kila mūrcchitaḥ mukhādvamannasṛkcoṣṇaṁ śvāsapūrapravepitaḥ
Struck by that foot, he fell indeed senseless to the ground, vomiting hot blood from his mouth, trembling with the rush of his breath.
Verse 44 (padma.5.28.44)
तदा प्रकुपितोऽत्यंतं हनूमान्प्रधनांगणे । अश्वान्वीरान्गजांश्चापि चूर्णयामास वेगतः
tadā prakupito'tyaṁtaṁ hanūmānpradhanāṁgaṇe aśvānvīrāngajāṁścāpi cūrṇayāmāsa vegataḥ
Then, exceedingly enraged, Hanuman, in the arena of battle, swiftly crushed horses, heroes, and elephants alike.
Verse 45 (padma.5.28.45)
तदा सुकेतुस्तद्भ्राता तथा लक्ष्मीनिधिर्नृपः । उभावपि सुसन्नद्धौ युद्धाय समुपस्थितौ
tadā suketustadbhrātā tathā lakṣmīnidhirnṛpaḥ ubhāvapi susannaddhau yuddhāya samupasthitau
Then Suketu's brother, and King Lakshminidhi too, both well-armed, stood ready for battle.
Verse 46 (padma.5.28.46)
राजानं मूर्च्छितं दृष्ट्वा प्रपलाय्य गता नराः । इतस्ततो बाणसंघैः क्षताः पुष्कलवर्षितैः
rājānaṁ mūrcchitaṁ dṛṣṭvā prapalāyya gatā narāḥ itastato bāṇasaṁghaiḥ kṣatāḥ puṣkalavarṣitaiḥ
Seeing the king senseless, the men fled in every direction, wounded by the masses of arrows showered by Pushkala.
Verse 47 (padma.5.28.47)
तद्भज्यमानं स्वबलं वीक्ष्य राजात्मजो बली । दमनः स्तंभयामास सेतुर्वार्धिमिवोच्चलम्
tadbhajyamānaṁ svabalaṁ vīkṣya rājātmajo balī damanaḥ staṁbhayāmāsa seturvārdhimivoccalam
Seeing his own army thus breaking, the mighty prince Damana stood firm, like a bridge against the rising sea.
Verse 48 (padma.5.28.48)
तदा तु मूर्च्छितो राजा स्वप्नमेकं ददर्श ह । रणमध्ये कपिवरप्रपदाघातताडितः
tadā tu mūrcchito rājā svapnamekaṁ dadarśa ha raṇamadhye kapivaraprapadāghātatāḍitaḥ
Then, senseless, the king saw a certain dream — struck, in the midst of battle, by the blow of the great monkey's foot —
Verse 49 (padma.5.28.49)
रामचंद्रस्त्वयोध्यायां सरयूतीरमंडपे । ब्राह्मणैर्याज्ञिकश्रेष्ठैर्बहुभिः परिवारितः
rāmacaṁdrastvayodhyāyāṁ sarayūtīramaṁḍape brāhmaṇairyājñikaśreṣṭhairbahubhiḥ parivāritaḥ
Ramachandra, in Ayodhya, in a pavilion on the bank of the Sarayu, surrounded by many brahmins, the finest of sacrificial priests.
Verse 50 (padma.5.28.50)
तत्र ब्रह्मादयो देवास्तत्र ब्रह्मांडकोटयः । कृतप्राञ्जलयस्तं वै स्तुवंति स्तुतिभिर्मुहुः
tatra brahmādayo devāstatra brahmāṁḍakoṭayaḥ kṛtaprāñjalayastaṁ vai stuvaṁti stutibhirmuhuḥ
There Brahma and the other gods, there myriads of universes, with joined palms, praised him again and again with hymns.
Verse 51 (padma.5.28.51)
रामं श्यामं सुनयनं मृगशृंगपरिग्रहम् । गायंति नारदाद्याश्च वीणोल्लसितपाणयः
rāmaṁ śyāmaṁ sunayanaṁ mṛgaśṛṁgaparigraham gāyaṁti nāradādyāśca vīṇollasitapāṇayaḥ
Narada and the other sages, their hands playing upon the vina, sang of Rama, dark-hued, fine-eyed, bearing a deer's horn.
Verse 52 (padma.5.28.52)
नृत्यंत्यप्सरसस्तत्र घृताची मेनकादयः । वेदा मूर्तिधरा भूत्वा उपतिष्ठंति राघवम्
nṛtyaṁtyapsarasastatra ghṛtācī menakādayaḥ vedā mūrtidharā bhūtvā upatiṣṭhaṁti rāghavam
There the apsarases danced — Ghritachi, Menaka, and the rest; the Vedas themselves, taking on bodily form, waited upon Raghava.
Verse 53 (padma.5.28.53)
यच्च किंचिद्वस्तुजातं सर्वशोभासमन्वितम् । तस्य दातारमखिलं भक्तानां भोगदायकम्
yacca kiṁcidvastujātaṁ sarvaśobhāsamanvitam tasya dātāramakhilaṁ bhaktānāṁ bhogadāyakam
And whatever thing there was, of every splendor, he was the giver of it all, the granter of enjoyment to his devotees.
Verse 54 (padma.5.28.54)
इत्येवमादिसंपश्यञ्जाग्रत्संज्ञामवाप सः । ब्रह्मशापहतज्ञानः किं दृष्टमिति वै वदन्
ityevamādisaṁpaśyañjāgratsaṁjñāmavāpa saḥ brahmaśāpahatajñānaḥ kiṁ dṛṣṭamiti vai vadan
Seeing such things and more, he regained waking consciousness, his understanding, once struck down by a brahmin's curse, saying, "What have I seen?"
Verse 55 (padma.5.28.55)
उत्थाय प्रययौ पद्भ्यां शत्रुघ्नचरणं प्रति । भृत्यकोटिपरीवारो रथकोटिपरीवृतः
utthāya prayayau padbhyāṁ śatrughnacaraṇaṁ prati bhṛtyakoṭiparīvāro rathakoṭiparīvṛtaḥ
Rising, he set out on foot toward Shatrughna's feet, surrounded by countless servants, attended by countless chariots.
Verse 56 (padma.5.28.56)
सुकेतुं तु समाहूय विचित्रं दमनं तथा । युद्धं कर्तुं समुद्युक्तान्वारयामास धर्मवित्
suketuṁ tu samāhūya vicitraṁ damanaṁ tathā yuddhaṁ kartuṁ samudyuktānvārayāmāsa dharmavit
Summoning Suketu, and Vichitra, and Damana too, all ready to do battle, that knower of dharma restrained them.
Verse 57 (padma.5.28.57)
उवाच तान्महाराजो धर्मात्मा धर्मसंयुतः । भ्रातःपुत्रौ शृणुत मे वाक्यं धर्मसमन्वितम्
uvāca tānmahārājo dharmātmā dharmasaṁyutaḥ bhrātaḥputrau śṛṇuta me vākyaṁ dharmasamanvitam
The great king, righteous-souled, devoted to dharma, said to them: "Brothers, sons, hear my words, joined with dharma."
Verse 58 (padma.5.28.58)
मा युद्धं कुरुत क्षिप्रमनयस्तु महानभूत् । यद्रामचंद्रवाहं त्वमगृह्णाद्दमनोर्ज्जितम्
mā yuddhaṁ kuruta kṣipramanayastu mahānabhūt yadrāmacaṁdravāhaṁ tvamagṛhṇāddamanorjjitam
"Do not fight — cease at once; a great wrong has indeed been done, in that you seized Ramachandra's horse, taken by force by Damana."
Verse 59 (padma.5.28.59)
एष रामः परंब्रह्म कार्यकारणतः परम् । चराचरजगत्स्वामी न मानुषवपुर्धरः
eṣa rāmaḥ paraṁbrahma kāryakāraṇataḥ param carācarajagatsvāmī na mānuṣavapurdharaḥ
"This Rama is the Supreme Brahman itself, beyond cause and effect, lord of the moving and unmoving world, not one who bears a mere human body."
Verse 60 (padma.5.28.60)
एतद्धि ब्रह्मविज्ञानमधुना ज्ञातवानहम् । पुरासितांगशापेन हृतज्ञानधनोऽनघाः
etaddhi brahmavijñānamadhunā jñātavānaham purāsitāṁgaśāpena hṛtajñānadhano'naghāḥ
"This very knowledge of Brahman I have now come to know — I, whose treasure of knowledge was long ago taken by the curse of Asitanga, sinless ones."
Verse 61 (padma.5.28.61)
अहं पुरा तीर्थयात्रां गतस्तत्त्वविवित्सया । तत्रानेके मया दृष्टा मुनयो धर्मवित्तमाः
ahaṁ purā tīrthayātrāṁ gatastattvavivitsayā tatrāneke mayā dṛṣṭā munayo dharmavittamāḥ
"Long ago I went on pilgrimage, desiring to know the truth; there I saw many sages, most learned in dharma."
Verse 62 (padma.5.28.62)
असितांगं मुनिमहं गतवाञ्ज्ञातुमिच्छया । तदा प्रोवाच मां विप्रः कृपां कृत्वा ममोपरि
asitāṁgaṁ munimahaṁ gatavāñjñātumicchayā tadā provāca māṁ vipraḥ kṛpāṁ kṛtvā mamopari
"I went to the sage Asitanga, out of desire to know; then that brahmin, showing me grace, said to me —"
Verse 63 (padma.5.28.63)
योऽसावयोध्याधिपतिः स परब्रह्मशब्दितः । तस्य या जानकी देवी साक्षात्सा चिन्मयी स्मृता
yo'sāvayodhyādhipatiḥ sa parabrahmaśabditaḥ tasya yā jānakī devī sākṣātsā cinmayī smṛtā
"'He who is the lord of Ayodhya is called the Supreme Brahman; and Janaki, his goddess, is remembered as consciousness itself, in visible form.'"
Verse 64 (padma.5.28.64)
एनं तु योगिनः साक्षादुपासते यमादिभिः । दुस्तरा पारसंसारवारिधिं संतितीर्षवः
enaṁ tu yoginaḥ sākṣādupāsate yamādibhiḥ dustarā pārasaṁsāravāridhiṁ saṁtitīrṣavaḥ
"'Yogis worship him directly, along with the disciplines of Yama and the rest, wishing to cross the hard-to-cross ocean of the far shore of samsara.'"
Verse 65 (padma.5.28.65)
स्मृतमात्रो महापापहारी स गरुडध्वजः । य एनं सेवते विद्वान्स संसारं तरिष्यति
smṛtamātro mahāpāpahārī sa garuḍadhvajaḥ ya enaṁ sevate vidvānsa saṁsāraṁ tariṣyati
"'Merely remembered, he removes great sin, that bearer of the Garuda banner; whoever, wise, serves him, shall cross beyond samsara.'"
Verse 66 (padma.5.28.66)
तदाहमहसं विप्रं कोऽयं रामस्तु मानुषः । केयं सा जानकी देवी हर्षशोकसमाकुला
tadāhamahasaṁ vipraṁ ko'yaṁ rāmastu mānuṣaḥ keyaṁ sā jānakī devī harṣaśokasamākulā
"Then I laughed at that brahmin: 'Who is this Rama, but a mere man? Who is this goddess Janaki, so overcome with joy and sorrow?'"
Verse 67 (padma.5.28.67)
अजन्मनः कथं जन्म अकर्तुः कृत्यमत्र किम् । जन्मदुःखजरातीतं कथयस्व मुने मम
ajanmanaḥ kathaṁ janma akartuḥ kṛtyamatra kim janmaduḥkhajarātītaṁ kathayasva mune mama
"'How can one unborn have birth? What deed is there for one who acts not? Tell me, sage, of one beyond the sorrow of birth and old age.'"
Verse 68 (padma.5.28.68)
इत्युक्तवंतं मां क्रुद्धः शशाप स मुनीश्वरः । अज्ञात्वा तत्स्वरूपं त्वं प्रतिब्रूषे ममाधम
ityuktavaṁtaṁ māṁ kruddhaḥ śaśāpa sa munīśvaraḥ ajñātvā tatsvarūpaṁ tvaṁ pratibrūṣe mamādhama
"To me speaking thus, that lord of sages, enraged, cursed me: 'Not knowing his true nature, you speak against me thus, base one!'"
Verse 69 (padma.5.28.69)
एनं निंदसि रामं त्वं मानुषोऽयमिदं हसन् । तस्मात्त्वं तत्त्वसंमूढो भविष्यस्युदरंभरिः
enaṁ niṁdasi rāmaṁ tvaṁ mānuṣo'yamidaṁ hasan tasmāttvaṁ tattvasaṁmūḍho bhaviṣyasyudaraṁbhariḥ
"'You revile this Rama, laughing that he is a mere man — therefore, deluded as to the truth, you shall become one who merely fills his own belly.'"
Verse 70 (padma.5.28.70)
तदाहं तस्य चरणावगृह्णं सदया युतः । दृष्ट्वा मे विनयं मां तु प्रावोचत्करुणानिधिः
tadāhaṁ tasya caraṇāvagṛhṇaṁ sadayā yutaḥ dṛṣṭvā me vinayaṁ māṁ tu prāvocatkaruṇānidhiḥ
"Then I, together with kind ones, clasped his feet; seeing my humility, that ocean of mercy said to me —"
Verse 71 (padma.5.28.71)
त्वं रामस्य मखे विघ्नं करिष्यसि यदा नृप । तदा हनूमानंघ्रिं त्वां ताडयिष्यति वेगतः
tvaṁ rāmasya makhe vighnaṁ kariṣyasi yadā nṛpa tadā hanūmānaṁghriṁ tvāṁ tāḍayiṣyati vegataḥ
"'When you, O king, cause an obstruction to Rama's sacrifice, then Hanuman shall strike your feet with speed;'"
Verse 72 (padma.5.28.72)
तदा त्वं ज्ञास्यसे राजन्नान्यथा स्वमनीषया । पुराहमुक्तस्तेनैवं तद्दृष्टमधुना मया
tadā tvaṁ jñāsyase rājannānyathā svamanīṣayā purāhamuktastenaivaṁ taddṛṣṭamadhunā mayā
"'then, king, and not otherwise, you shall know it by your own understanding.' Thus was I addressed by him long ago; that very thing I have now seen."
Verse 73 (padma.5.28.73)
यदा मां हनुमान्क्रुद्धस्ताडयामास वक्षसि । तदाऽदर्शं रमानाथं पूर्णब्रह्मस्वरूपिणम्
yadā māṁ hanumānkruddhastāḍayāmāsa vakṣasi tadā'darśaṁ ramānāthaṁ pūrṇabrahmasvarūpiṇam
"When Hanuman, enraged, struck me upon the chest, then I beheld the Lord of Rama, in his complete Brahman-form."
Verse 74 (padma.5.28.74)
तस्मादश्वं तु शोभाढ्यमानयंतु महाबलाः । धनानि चैव वासांसि राज्यं चेदं समर्पये
tasmādaśvaṁ tu śobhāḍhyamānayaṁtu mahābalāḥ dhanāni caiva vāsāṁsi rājyaṁ cedaṁ samarpaye
"Therefore, let the mighty ones bring forth that splendid horse; wealth, and garments, and this very kingdom too I offer up."
Verse 75 (padma.5.28.75)
रामं दृष्ट्वा कृतार्थः स्यामहं यज्ञेति पुण्यदे । आनयंतु हयं मह्यं रोचते तु तदर्पणम्
rāmaṁ dṛṣṭvā kṛtārthaḥ syāmahaṁ yajñeti puṇyade ānayaṁtu hayaṁ mahyaṁ rocate tu tadarpaṇam
"Seeing Rama, I shall become fulfilled in the sacrifice, O giver of merit. Let the horse be brought to me — its offering pleases me well."
