Shatrughna and Subahu Set Forth
Verse 1 (padma.5.29.1)
शेष उवाच। ते तु तातवचः श्रुत्वा हर्षिताः संप्रहारिणः । तथेत्यूचुर्महाराजं रामदर्शनलालसम्
śeṣa uvāca te tu tātavacaḥ śrutvā harṣitāḥ saṁprahāriṇaḥ tathetyūcurmahārājaṁ rāmadarśanalālasam
Shesha said: Hearing their father's words, the battle-skilled sons, joyful and eager for the sight of Rama, said "So be it" to the great king.
Verse 2 (padma.5.29.2)
पुत्रा ऊचुः। राजन्भवत्पदांभोजान्नान्यं जानीमहे वयम् । यत्तव स्वांततो जातं तद्भवत्वद्य वेगतः
putrā ūcuḥ rājanbhavatpadāṁbhojānnānyaṁ jānīmahe vayam yattava svāntato jātaṁ tadbhavatvadya vegataḥ
The sons said: "O King, we know nothing but your lotus feet. Whatever has arisen in your heart, let that be done at once, today."
Verse 3 (padma.5.29.3)
अश्वोऽयं नीयतां तत्र सितचामरभूषितः । रत्नमालातिशोभाढ्यश्चंदनादिकचर्चितः
aśvo'yaṁ nīyatāṁ tatra sitacāmarabhūṣitaḥ ratnamālātiśobhāḍhyaścaṁdanādikacarcitaḥ
Let this horse, adorned with white chowries, richly resplendent with garlands of jewels, and anointed with sandal and the like, be led there.
Verse 4 (padma.5.29.4)
राज्यमाज्ञाफलं स्वामिन्कोशा बहुसमृद्धयः । वासांसि सुमहार्हाणि सूक्ष्माणि सुगुणानि च
rājyamājñāphalaṁ svāminkośā bahusamṛddhayaḥ vāsāṁsi sumahārhāṇi sūkṣmāṇi suguṇāni ca
O lord, this kingdom is but the fruit of obedience — treasuries rich with manifold abundance, garments of great value, fine in texture and of excellent quality —
Verse 5 (padma.5.29.5)
चंदनं चंद्रकं चैव वाजिनः सुमनोहराः । हस्तिनस्तु मदोद्धूता रथाः कांचनकूबराः
caṁdanaṁ caṁdrakaṁ caiva vājinaḥ sumanoharāḥ hastinastu madoddhūtā rathāḥ kāṁcanakūbarāḥ
sandalwood and camphor, most charming horses, elephants flowing with rut, chariots with golden yoke-poles,
Verse 6 (padma.5.29.6)
विचित्रतरवर्णादि नानाभूषणभूषिताः । दास्यः शतसहस्रं च दासाश्च सुमनोरमाः
vicitrataravarṇādi nānābhūṣaṇabhūṣitāḥ dāsyaḥ śatasahasraṁ ca dāsāśca sumanoramāḥ
adorned with ornaments of manifold and wondrous colors, a hundred thousand maidservants, and most charming manservants,
Verse 7 (padma.5.29.7)
मणयः सूर्यसंकाशा रत्नानि विविधानि च । मुक्ताफलानि शुभ्राणि गजकुंभभवानि च
maṇayaḥ sūryasaṁkāśā ratnāni vividhāni ca muktāphalāni śubhrāṇi gajakuṁbhabhavāni ca
gems radiant as the sun, jewels of every kind, and pure white pearls born from the temples of elephants,
Verse 8 (padma.5.29.8)
विद्रुमाः शतसाहस्रा यद्यद्वस्तुमहोदयम् । तत्सर्वं रामचंद्राय देहि राजन्महामते
vidrumāḥ śatasāhasrā yadyadvastumahodayam tatsarvaṁ rāmacaṁdrāya dehi rājanmahāmate
hundreds of thousands of corals — whatever object is of great worth, give all of that to Ramachandra, O king of great wisdom.
Verse 9 (padma.5.29.9)
सुतानस्मान्किंकरान्नः सर्वानर्पय भूपते । कथं न कुरुषेराजंस्तदधीनं नृपासनम्
sutānasmānkiṁkarānnaḥ sarvānarpaya bhūpate kathaṁ na kuruṣerājaṁstadadhīnaṁ nṛpāsanam
Offer us, your sons, all as servants, O lord of the earth. Why, O king, do you not place the very royal throne under his authority?
Verse 10 (padma.5.29.10)
शेष उवाच। इति पुत्रवचः श्रुत्वा हर्षितोऽभून्महीपतिः । उवाच च सुतान्वीरान्स्ववाक्यकरणोद्यतान्
śeṣa uvāca iti putravacaḥ śrutvā harṣito'bhūnmahīpatiḥ uvāca ca sutānvīrānsvavākyakaraṇodyatān
Shesha said: Hearing these words of his sons, the king became joyful, and spoke to his valiant sons who stood ready to carry out his command.
Verse 11 (padma.5.29.11)
राजोवाच। आनयंतु हयं सर्वे सन्नद्धाः शस्त्रपाणयः । नानारथपरीवारास्ततो यास्ये नृपं प्रति
rājovāca ānayaṁtu hayaṁ sarve sannaddhāḥ śastrapāṇayaḥ nānārathaparīvārāstato yāsye nṛpaṁ prati
The king said: "Let all of you, armed and ready, weapons in hand, bring the horse, surrounded by chariots of every kind; then I shall go to the king."
Verse 12 (padma.5.29.12)
शेष उवाच। इति राज्ञोवचः श्रुत्वा विचित्रो दमनस्तथा । सुकेतुः समरे शूरा जग्मुस्तस्याज्ञयोद्यताः
śeṣa uvāca iti rājñovacaḥ śrutvā vicitro damanastathā suketuḥ samare śūrā jagmustasyājñayodyatāḥ
Shesha said: Hearing the king's words, Vichitra, Damana, and the battle-valiant Suketu, ready at his command, set forth.
Verse 13 (padma.5.29.13)
ते गत्वाथ पुरीं शूरा वाजिनं सुमनोरमम् । सितचामरसंयुक्तं स्वर्णपत्राद्यलंकृतम्
te gatvātha purīṁ śūrā vājinaṁ sumanoramam sitacāmarasaṁyuktaṁ svarṇapatrādyalaṁkṛtam
Going into the city, those heroes brought the most charming horse, adorned with white chowries and decked with plates of gold and the like —
Verse 14 (padma.5.29.14)
रत्नमालाविभूषाढ्यं चित्रपत्रेणशोभितम् । विचित्रमणिभूषाढ्यं मुक्ताजालस्वलंकृतम्
ratnamālāvibhūṣāḍhyaṁ citrapatreṇaśobhitam vicitramaṇibhūṣāḍhyaṁ muktājālasvalaṁkṛtam
richly decked with garlands of jewels, resplendent with painted trappings, richly adorned with wondrous gems, and beautifully decorated with a network of pearls —
Verse 15 (padma.5.29.15)
रज्ज्वा धृतं महावीरैः पूर्वतः पृष्ठतो भटैः । महाशस्त्रास्त्रसंयुक्तैः सर्वशोभासमन्वितैः
rajjvā dhṛtaṁ mahāvīraiḥ pūrvataḥ pṛṣṭhato bhaṭaiḥ mahāśastrāstrasaṁyuktaiḥ sarvaśobhāsamanvitaiḥ
held by a rope by great heroes in front, and behind by warriors armed with mighty weapons and missiles, resplendent in every glory —
Verse 16 (padma.5.29.16)
सितातपत्रमस्योच्चैर्भाति मूर्धनि वाजिनः । सुचामरद्वयं यस्य ध्रियते पुरतो मुहुः
sitātapatramasyoccairbhāti mūrdhani vājinaḥ sucāmaradvayaṁ yasya dhriyate purato muhuḥ
A white parasol shone high above the horse's head; a pair of fine chowries was ever held waving before it;
Verse 17 (padma.5.29.17)
कृष्णागर्वादिधूपैश्च धूपितं वायुवेगिनम् । राज्ञः पुरो निनायाश्वं हयमेधस्य सत्क्रतोः
kṛṣṇāgarvādidhūpaiśca dhūpitaṁ vāyuveginam rājñaḥ puro nināyāśvaṁ hayamedhasya satkratoḥ
fumed with the incense of black aloe and the like — the wind-swift steed of the noble Horse-Sacrifice was led before the king.
Verse 18 (padma.5.29.18)
तमानीतं हयं दृष्ट्वा रत्नमालाविभूषितम् । मनोजवं कामरूपं जहर्ष मतिमान्नृपः
tamānītaṁ hayaṁ dṛṣṭvā ratnamālāvibhūṣitam manojavaṁ kāmarūpaṁ jaharṣa matimānnṛpaḥ
Seeing that horse, brought there, adorned with garlands of jewels, swift as thought, able to take any form at will, the wise king rejoiced.
Verse 19 (padma.5.29.19)
जगाम पद्भ्यां शत्रुघ्नं राजचिह्नाद्यलंकृतः । स्वपुत्रपौत्रैः संयुक्तो राजा परमधार्मिकः
jagāma padbhyāṁ śatrughnaṁ rājacihnādyalaṁkṛtaḥ svaputrapautraiḥ saṁyukto rājā paramadhārmikaḥ
Adorned with the insignia of royalty, that most righteous king, accompanied by his sons and grandsons, went on foot to Shatrughna.
Verse 20 (padma.5.29.20)
ययौ कर्तुं धनानां स सद्व्ययं चलगामिनाम् । एतद्विनश्वरं मत्वा दुःखदं सक्तचेतसाम्
yayau kartuṁ dhanānāṁ sa sadvyayaṁ calagāminām etadvinaśvaraṁ matvā duḥkhadaṁ saktacetasām
He went to make good use of his wealth, ever fleeting, reckoning it perishable and a source of sorrow to those whose hearts cling to it.
Verse 21 (padma.5.29.21)
शत्रुघ्नं स ददर्शाथ सितच्छत्रेण शोभितम् । चामरैर्वीज्यमानञ्च सेवकैः पुरतः स्थितैः
śatrughnaṁ sa dadarśātha sitacchatreṇa śobhitam cāmarairvījyamānañca sevakaiḥ purataḥ sthitaiḥ
Then he beheld Shatrughna, resplendent beneath a white parasol, fanned with chowries, with servants standing before him,
Verse 22 (padma.5.29.22)
सुमतिं परिपृच्छंतं रामचंद्रकथानकम् । भयवार्ताविनिर्मुक्तं वीरशोभास्वलंकृतम्
sumatiṁ paripṛcchaṁtaṁ rāmacaṁdrakathānakam bhayavārtāvinirmuktaṁ vīraśobhāsvalaṁkṛtam
of noble wisdom, inquiring after the tale of Ramachandra, wholly free from any word of fear, adorned with heroic splendor,
Verse 23 (padma.5.29.23)
वीरैः कोटिभिराकीर्णं वाजिपालनकांक्षिभिः । वानराणां सहस्रैश्च समंतात्परिवारितम्
vīraiḥ koṭibhirākīrṇaṁ vājipālanakāṁkṣibhiḥ vānarāṇāṁ sahasraiśca samaṁtātparivāritam
surrounded by tens of millions of heroes eager to guard the horse, and encircled on every side by thousands of vanaras.
Verse 24 (padma.5.29.24)
दृष्ट्वा शत्रुघ्नचरणौ प्रणनाम सपुत्रकः । धन्योऽहमिति संहृष्टो वदन्रामैकमानसः
dṛṣṭvā śatrughnacaraṇau praṇanāma saputrakaḥ dhanyo'hamiti saṁhṛṣṭo vadanrāmaikamānasaḥ
Seeing him, together with his sons he bowed at Shatrughna's feet and, greatly rejoicing, saying "I am blessed," his mind fixed on Rama alone.
Verse 25 (padma.5.29.25)
शत्रुघ्नस्तं प्रणयिनं दृष्ट्वा राजानमुद्भटम् । उत्थायासनतः सर्वैर्भटैर्दोर्भ्यां स सस्वजे
śatrughnastaṁ praṇayinaṁ dṛṣṭvā rājānamudbhaṭam utthāyāsanataḥ sarvairbhaṭairdorbhyāṁ sa sasvaje
Seeing that affectionate, mighty king, Shatrughna rose from his seat and, before all his warriors, embraced him with both arms.
Verse 26 (padma.5.29.26)
दृढं संपूज्य राजा तं शत्रुघ्नं परवीरहा । उवाच हर्षमापन्नो गद्गदस्वरया गिरा
dṛḍhaṁ saṁpūjya rājā taṁ śatrughnaṁ paravīrahā uvāca harṣamāpanno gadgadasvarayā girā
Having thoroughly honored Shatrughna, slayer of enemy heroes, the king, overcome with joy, spoke in a voice choked with emotion.
Verse 27 (padma.5.29.27)
सुबाहुरुवाच। अद्य धन्योस्मि ससुतः सकुटुंबः सवाहनः । यद्युष्मच्चरणौ द्रक्ष्ये नृपकोटिभिरीडितौ
subāhuruvāca adya dhanyosmi sasutaḥ sakuṭuṁbaḥ savāhanaḥ yadyuṣmaccaraṇau drakṣye nṛpakoṭibhirīḍitau
Subahu said: "Today, with my sons, my family, and my forces, I am blessed indeed — that I behold your feet, feet praised by tens of millions of kings.
Verse 28 (padma.5.29.28)
अज्ञानिना सुतेनायं गृहीतो वाजिनां वरः । दमनेनानयं त्वस्य क्षमस्व करुणानिधे
ajñāninā sutenāyaṁ gṛhīto vājināṁ varaḥ damanenānayaṁ tvasya kṣamasva karuṇānidhe
By my ignorant son Damana this best of horses was seized; forgive this offense of his, O ocean of compassion.
Verse 29 (padma.5.29.29)
न जानाति रघूत्तंसं सर्वदेवाधिदैवतम् । लीलया विश्वस्रष्टारं हंतारमपि पालकम्
na jānāti raghūttaṁsaṁ sarvadevādhidaivatam līlayā viśvasraṣṭāraṁ haṁtāramapi pālakam
He does not know that crest-jewel of the Raghus, the supreme deity of all gods, who by mere play creates the universe and is both its destroyer and its protector.
Verse 30 (padma.5.29.30)
इदं राज्यं समृद्धांगं समृद्धबलवाहनम् । इमे कोशा धनैः पूर्णा इमे पुत्रा इमे वयम्
idaṁ rājyaṁ samṛddhāṁgaṁ samṛddhabalavāhanam ime kośā dhanaiḥ pūrṇā ime putrā ime vayam
This kingdom, prosperous in every part, rich in strength and forces; these treasuries full of wealth; these my sons; and I myself —
Verse 31 (padma.5.29.31)
सर्वे वयं रामनाथास्त्वदाज्ञा प्रतिपालकाः । गृहाण सर्वं सफलं न मेऽस्ति क्वचिदुन्मतम्
sarve vayaṁ rāmanāthāstvadājñā pratipālakāḥ gṛhāṇa sarvaṁ saphalaṁ na me'sti kvacidunmatam
All of us hold Rama alone as our lord, and stand ready to obey your command. Accept everything, that it may bear fruit; nowhere is anything of mine withheld in pride.
Verse 32 (padma.5.29.32)
क्वासौ हनूमान्रामस्य चरणांभोजषट्पदः । यत्प्रसादादहं प्राप्स्ये राजराजस्य दर्शनम्
kvāsau hanūmānrāmasya caraṇāṁbhojaṣaṭpadaḥ yatprasādādahaṁ prāpsye rājarājasya darśanam
Where is that Hanuman, the bee at the lotus feet of Rama, by whose grace I might obtain the sight of the King of Kings?
Verse 33 (padma.5.29.33)
साधूनां संगमे किं किं प्राप्यते न महीतले । यत्प्रसादादहं मूढो ब्रह्मशापमतीतरम्
sādhūnāṁ saṁgame kiṁ kiṁ prāpyate na mahītale yatprasādādahaṁ mūḍho brahmaśāpamatītaram
What indeed is not attained on this earth through the company of the virtuous — by whose grace even I, a fool, crossed beyond a Brahmin's curse?
Verse 34 (padma.5.29.34)
दृष्ट्वा त्वद्य महाराजं पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणम् । प्राप्स्यामि जन्मनः सर्वं फलं दुर्लभमत्र च
dṛṣṭvā tvadya mahārājaṁ padmapatranibhekṣaṇam prāpsyāmi janmanaḥ sarvaṁ phalaṁ durlabhamatra ca
Beholding today the great king whose eyes are like lotus petals, I shall obtain here the entire rare fruit of this birth.
Verse 35 (padma.5.29.35)
मम तावद्गतं चायुर्बहुरामवियोगिनः । स्वल्पमुर्वरितं तत्र कथं द्रक्ष्ये रघूत्तमम्
mama tāvadgataṁ cāyurbahurāmaviyoginaḥ svalpamurvaritaṁ tatra kathaṁ drakṣye raghūttamam
My life, spent long in separation from Rama, has already passed; very little of it remains — how then shall I behold that best of the Raghus?
Verse 36 (padma.5.29.36)
मह्यं दर्शयतं रामं यज्ञकर्मविचक्षणम् । यदंघ्रिरजसापूता शिलाभूता मुनिप्रिया
mahyaṁ darśayataṁ rāmaṁ yajñakarmavicakṣaṇam yadaṁghrirajasāpūtā śilābhūtā munipriyā
Show me that Rama, skilled in the rites of sacrifice, by the dust of whose feet the stone dear to the sage was purified and restored —
Verse 37 (padma.5.29.37)
काकः परं पदं प्राप्तो यद्बाणस्पर्शनात्खगः । अनेके यस्य वक्त्राब्जं वीक्ष्य संख्ये पदं गताः
kākaḥ paraṁ padaṁ prāpto yadbāṇasparśanātkhagaḥ aneke yasya vaktrābjaṁ vīkṣya saṁkhye padaṁ gatāḥ
by whose arrow's mere touch even a crow, a common bird, attained the highest state; many, beholding his lotus face in battle, attained that same supreme state.
Verse 38 (padma.5.29.38)
ये त्वस्य रघुनाथस्य नाम गृह्णंति सादराः । ते यांति परमं स्थानं योगिभिर्यद्विचिंत्यते
ye tvasya raghunāthasya nāma gṛhṇaṁti sādarāḥ te yāṁti paramaṁ sthānaṁ yogibhiryadviciṁtyate
Those who reverently take the name of this Lord of the Raghus attain the supreme abode, on which yogis meditate.
Verse 39 (padma.5.29.39)
धन्यायोध्याभवा लोका ये राममुखपंजम् । स्वलोचनपुटैः पीत्वा सुखं यांति महोदयम्
dhanyāyodhyābhavā lokā ye rāmamukhapaṁjam svalocanapuṭaiḥ pītvā sukhaṁ yāṁti mahodayam
Blessed are the people born in Ayodhya, who, drinking in Rama's lotus face with their own eyes, go on to great and blissful prosperity.
Verse 40 (padma.5.29.40)
इति संभाष्य नृपतिं वाहं राज्यं धनानि च । सर्वं समर्प्य चावोचत्किंकरोस्मि महीपते
iti saṁbhāṣya nṛpatiṁ vāhaṁ rājyaṁ dhanāni ca sarvaṁ samarpya cāvocatkiṁkarosmi mahīpate
Having thus spoken to the king, he offered up the horse, the kingdom, and his riches, all of it, and said: "I am your servant, O lord of the earth."
Verse 41 (padma.5.29.41)
इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य राज्ञः परपुरंजयः । प्रत्युवाचेति तं भूपं वाग्मी वाक्यविशारदः
iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya rājñaḥ parapuraṁjayaḥ pratyuvāceti taṁ bhūpaṁ vāgmī vākyaviśāradaḥ
Hearing this speech of the king, the conqueror of enemy cities, eloquent and skilled in speech, replied thus to that king.
Verse 42 (padma.5.29.42)
शत्रुघ्न उवाच। कथं राजन्निदं ब्रूषे त्वं वृद्धो मम पूजितः । सर्वं त्वदीयं त्वद्राज्यं दमनो विदधात्वयम्
śatrughna uvāca kathaṁ rājannidaṁ brūṣe tvaṁ vṛddho mama pūjitaḥ sarvaṁ tvadīyaṁ tvadrājyaṁ damano vidadhātvayam
Shatrughna said: "How is it, O king, that you speak thus? You are elder and worthy of my worship. All this is yours, this kingdom is yours; let Damana himself administer it.
Verse 43 (padma.5.29.43)
क्षत्त्रियाणामिदं कृत्यं यत्संग्रामविधायकम् । सर्वं राज्यं धनं चेदं प्रतियातु ममाज्ञया
kṣattriyāṇāmidaṁ kṛtyaṁ yatsaṁgrāmavidhāyakam sarvaṁ rājyaṁ dhanaṁ cedaṁ pratiyātu mamājñayā
This very engaging in battle is the duty of Kshatriyas. Let all this kingdom and this wealth return to you again at my command.
Verse 44 (padma.5.29.44)
यथा मे रघुनाथस्तु पूज्यो वाङ्मनसा सदा । तथा त्वमपि मत्पूज्यो भविष्यसि महीपते
yathā me raghunāthastu pūjyo vāṅmanasā sadā tathā tvamapi matpūjyo bhaviṣyasi mahīpate
Just as the Lord of the Raghus is ever worshipped by me in word and mind, so shall you too, O lord of the earth, be worthy of my worship.
Verse 45 (padma.5.29.45)
भवान्सज्जो भवत्वद्य हयस्यानुगमं प्रति । सन्नद्धः कवची खड्गी गजाश्वरथसंयुतः
bhavānsajjo bhavatvadya hayasyānugamaṁ prati sannaddhaḥ kavacī khaḍgī gajāśvarathasaṁyutaḥ
This day be ready to follow after the horse — mailed, sword in hand, accompanied by elephants, horses, and chariots."
Verse 46 (padma.5.29.46)
इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य शत्रुघ्नस्य महीपतिः । पुत्रं राज्येऽभिषेच्यैव शत्रुघ्नेन सुपूजितः
iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya śatrughnasya mahīpatiḥ putraṁ rājye'bhiṣecyaiva śatrughnena supūjitaḥ
Hearing these words of Shatrughna, the king, duly honored by Shatrughna, first consecrated his son upon the throne,
Verse 47 (padma.5.29.47)
महारथैः परिवृतो निजं पुत्रं रणांगणे । पुष्कलेन हतं भूपः संस्कृत्य विधिपूर्वकम्
mahārathaiḥ parivṛto nijaṁ putraṁ raṇāṁgaṇe puṣkalena hataṁ bhūpaḥ saṁskṛtya vidhipūrvakam
and, surrounded by great warriors, the king duly performed the last rites, according to the prescribed rule, for his own son who had been slain on the battlefield by Pushkala.
Verse 48 (padma.5.29.48)
क्षणं शुशोच तत्त्वज्ञो लोकदृष्ट्या महारथः । ज्ञानेनानाशयच्छोकं रघुनाथमनुस्मरन्
kṣaṇaṁ śuśoca tattvajño lokadṛṣṭyā mahārathaḥ jñānenānāśayacchokaṁ raghunāthamanusmaran
That great warrior, knower of truth, grieved for a moment in the eyes of the world, then, remembering the Lord of the Raghus, dispelled his sorrow through knowledge.
Verse 49 (padma.5.29.49)
सज्जीभूतो रथे तिष्ठन्महासैन्यसमावृतः । आजगाम स शत्रुघ्नं महारथिपुरस्कृतः
sajjībhūto rathe tiṣṭhanmahāsainyasamāvṛtaḥ ājagāma sa śatrughnaṁ mahārathipuraskṛtaḥ
Made ready, standing in his chariot, surrounded by a great army, honored by mighty warriors, he came before Shatrughna.
Verse 50 (padma.5.29.50)
राजा तमागतं दृष्ट्वा सर्वसैन्यसमन्वितम् । गंतुं चकार धिषणां हयवर्यस्य पालने
rājā tamāgataṁ dṛṣṭvā sarvasainyasamanvitam gaṁtuṁ cakāra dhiṣaṇāṁ hayavaryasya pālane
Seeing him arrived with his entire army, the king resolved to go forth for the protection of the excellent horse.
Verse 51 (padma.5.29.51)
सोऽश्वो विमोचितस्तेन भाले पत्रेण चिह्नितः । वामावर्तं भ्रमन्प्रायात्पौर्वाञ्जनपदान्बहून्
so'śvo vimocitastena bhāle patreṇa cihnitaḥ vāmāvartaṁ bhramanprāyātpaurvāñjanapadānbahūn
That horse, its brow marked with a leaf-emblem, was set free by him, and, wandering in a leftward circuit, went on through many eastern kingdoms.

तत्रतत्रत्य भूपालैर्महाशूराभिपूजितैः । प्रणतिः क्रियते तस्य न कोपि तमगृह्णत
tatratatratya bhūpālairmahāśūrābhipūjitaiḥ praṇatiḥ kriyate tasya na kopi tamagṛhṇata
In each place, the local kings, mighty heroes though honored themselves, bowed to it; nowhere did anyone attempt to seize it.
Verse 53 (padma.5.29.53)
केचिद्वासांसि चित्राणि केचिद्राज्यं स्वकं महत् । केचिद्धनं जनं केचिदानीय प्रणमंति तम्
kecidvāsāṁsi citrāṇi kecidrājyaṁ svakaṁ mahat keciddhanaṁ janaṁ kecidānīya praṇamaṁti tam
Some brought wondrous garments, some their own great kingdoms, some wealth, some their people, and, bringing them, bowed before it.
