The Vow of the Cow

Chapter 30All chaptersChapter 32

Verse 1 (padma.5.31.1)

jābāliruvāca atha teṣu prayāteṣu narakastheṣu vai nṛṣu rājā papraccha kīnāśaṁ sarvadharmavidāṁvaram

Jabali said: Then, when those men who had been in hell had departed, the king asked Yama, best among the knowers of all dharma.

Verse 2 (padma.5.31.2)

rājovāca dharmarāja tvayā proktaṁ yatpātakakarā narāḥ āyāṁti tava saṁsthānaṁ na ca dharmakathāratāḥ

The king said: "O Dharmaraja, you have said that it is sinful men who come to your abode, and not those devoted to talk of dharma.

Verse 3 (padma.5.31.3)

madāgamanamatrābhūtkenapāpena dhārmika tadvai kathaya sarvaṁ me pāpakāraṇamāditaḥ

By what sin, O righteous one, did my own coming here occur? Tell me all of it — the cause of that sin, from the beginning."

Verse 4 (padma.5.31.4)

iti śrutvā tu tadvākyaṁ dharmarājaḥ paraṁtapa kathayāmāsa tasyaivaṁ yamapuryāgamaṁ tadā

Hearing these words, O scorcher of foes, Dharmaraja then related to him thus the cause of his coming to Yama's city.

Verse 5 (padma.5.31.5)

dharmarāja uvāca rājaṁstava mahatpuṇyaṁ naitādṛkkasya bhūtale raghunāthapadadvaṁdvamakaraṁda madhuvrata

Dharmaraja said: "O king, your merit is so great that none other on earth possesses its like — O bee that drinks the honey of Raghunatha's paired feet!

Verse 6 (padma.5.31.6)

tvatkīrti svardhunī sarvānpāpino malasaṁyutān punāti paramāhlādakāriṇī duṣṭatāriṇī

Your fame, like the celestial river, purifies all sinners steeped in impurity, bringing supreme delight and ferrying across even the wicked.

Verse 7 (padma.5.31.7)

tathāpi pāpaleśaste vartate nṛpasattama yena saṁyaminīpārśvamāgataḥ puṇyapūritaḥ

Yet, O best of kings, a trace of sin still remained in you, on account of which you came, though full of merit, to the side of Samyamini, the city of Restraint.

Verse 8 (padma.5.31.8)

ekadā tu caraṁtīṁ gāṁ vārayāmāsa vai bhavān tena pāpavipākena nirayadvāradarśanam

Once you forbade a cow that was grazing; by the fruit of that sin came this sight of hell's gate.

Verse 9 (padma.5.31.9)

idānīṁ pāpanirmukto bahupuṇyasamanvitaḥ bhuṁkṣva bhogānsuvipulānnijapuṇyārjitānbahūn

Now, freed from that sin and endowed with abundant merit, enjoy the many vast pleasures earned by your own good deeds.

Verse 10 (padma.5.31.10)

eteṣāṁ karuṇāvārdhī raghunātho sukhaṁ haran saṁyaminyā mahāmārge prerayāmāsa vaiṣṇavam

Raghunatha, that ocean of compassion, taking away their suffering, sent this devotee of Vishnu upon the great road of Samyamini.

Verse 11 (padma.5.31.11)

nāgamiṣyo yadi tvaṁ vai mārgeṇānena suvrata abhaviṣyatkathaṁ teṣāṁ nirayātparimocanam

Had you not come by this path, O one of good vows, how would their release from hell have come about?

Verse 12 (padma.5.31.12)

tvādṛśāḥ paraduḥkhena duḥkhitāḥ karuṇālayāḥ prāṇināṁ duḥkhavicchedaṁ kurvaṁtyeva mahāmate

Those like you, O one of great wisdom, abodes of compassion, grieved by others' suffering, indeed put an end to the suffering of living beings.

Verse 13 (padma.5.31.13)

jābāliruvāca evaṁ vadaṁtaṁ śamanaṁ praṇamya sa divaṁgataḥ divyena suvimānena apsarogaṇaśobhinā

Jabali said: Bowing to Yama who spoke thus, he departed for heaven, in a divine and excellent celestial chariot resplendent with troops of apsaras.

Verse 14 (padma.5.31.14)

tasmādgāvo'niśaṁ pūjyā manasāpi na garhayet garhayannirayaṁ yāti yāvadiṁdrāścaturdaśa

Therefore cows are ever to be worshipped; one should not despise them even in thought. He who despises them goes to hell for as long as fourteen Indras reign.

Verse 15 (padma.5.31.15)

tasmāttvaṁ nṛpatiśreṣṭha gopūjāṁ vai samācara sā tuṣṭā dāsyati kṣipraṁ putraṁ dharmaparāyaṇam

Therefore, O best of kings, perform the worship of the cow; pleased, she will swiftly grant you a righteous son.

Verse 16 (padma.5.31.16)

sumatiruvāca tacchrutvā dhenupūjāṁ sa papraccha kathamādarāt pūjanīyā prayatnena kīdṛśaṁ kurute naram

Sumati said: Hearing this, he reverently asked how the cow should be worshipped, and what she, worshipped with effort, makes of a man.

Verse 17 (padma.5.31.17)

jābāli kathayāmāsa dhenupūjāṁ yathāvidhi pratyahaṁ vipinaṁ gacchecchāraṇārthaṁ vratī tu goḥ

Jabali told him of the worship of the cow according to rule: every day the one under vow should go to the forest, for the purpose of leading the cow to graze;

Verse 18 (padma.5.31.18)

gave yavāṁstu saṁbhojya gomayasthānsamāharet bhakṣaṇīyā yavāste tu putrakāmena bhūpate

having fed the cow barley, he should gather up what stands upon her dung; that barley, O king, is to be eaten by one who desires a son.

Verse 19 (padma.5.31.19)

sā yadā pibate toyaṁ tadā peyaṁ jalaṁ śuci soccaiḥ sthāne yadā tiṣṭhettadānīṁ cāsanasthitaḥ

When she drinks water, that pure water is to be drunk by the devotee too; when she stands in a raised place, he too should remain seated there —

Verse 20 (padma.5.31.20)

daṁśānnivārayennityaṁ yavasaṁ svayamāharet evaṁ prakurvataḥ putraṁ dāsyate dharmatatparam

he should daily ward off the biting flies from her, and himself gather her fodder. To one who acts thus, she grants a son devoted to dharma.

Verse 21 (padma.5.31.21)

sumatiruvāca iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya putrakāma ṛtaṁbharaḥ vrataṁ cakāra dharmātmā dhenupūjāṁ samācaran

Sumati said: Hearing this, Ritambhara, desiring a son, that righteous soul, undertook the vow, performing the worship of the cow.

Verse 22 (padma.5.31.22)

pratyahaṁ kurute gāṁ vai yavasādyena toṣitām daṁśānnyavārayaddhīmānyavabhakṣakṛtādaraḥ

Daily he tended the cow, pleasing her with fodder and the like; the wise king warded off the flies, devoted to eating the barley from her dung.

Verse 23 (padma.5.31.23)

evaṁ dhenuṁ pūjayato gatāstu divasā ghanāḥ vanamadhye tṛṇādīṁśca caraṁtīmakutobhayām

Thus, as he worshipped the cow, many days passed, while she grazed fearlessly on grass and the like in the midst of the forest.

Verse 24 (padma.5.31.24)

ekadā nṛpatistasya vanasya śrīnirīkṣaṇe nyastadṛṣṭiḥ saparito babhrāma sa kutūhalī

One day the king, his eyes fixed on the beauty of that forest, wandered about it, filled with curiosity.

Verse 25 (padma.5.31.25)

tadāgatyāhanadgāṁ vai paṁcāsyaḥ kānanāṁtarāt krośaṁtīṁ bahudhā dīnāṁ siṁhabhāreṇaduḥkhitām

Then a lion came from within the forest and struck the cow, who cried out piteously in many ways, tormented by the lion's assault.

Verse 26 (padma.5.31.26)

tadā nṛpaḥ samāgatya vilokya nijamātaram siṁhena nihatāṁ paśyanrurodātīva vihvalaḥ

Then the king, coming there and beholding his own mother-cow, seeing her struck down by the lion, wept in utter distress.

Verse 27 (padma.5.31.27)

sa duḥkhitaḥ samāgatya jābālimunisattamam niṣkṛtiṁ tasya papraccha govadhasya pramādataḥ

Grieving, he came to the sage Jabali, best of sages, and asked him for the expiation of the cow's killing that had occurred through his negligence.

Verse 28 (padma.5.31.28)

ṛtaṁbhara uvāca svāmiṁstvadājñayā dhenuṁ pālayanvanamāsthitaḥ kutopyāgatya tāṁ siṁho jaghānādṛṣṭigocaraḥ

Ritambhara said: "My lord, by your command I was in the forest, tending the cow, when a lion came from somewhere unseen and struck her down.

Verse 29 (padma.5.31.29)

tasya pāpasya niṣkṛtyai kiṁ karomi tvadājñayā kathaṁ vā vratasaṁpūrtirmama putrapradāyinī

What am I to do, by your command, to expiate that sin? And how shall the completion of my vow, the one that grants a son, now be accomplished?"

Verse 30 (padma.5.31.30)

ityuktavaṁtaṁ taṁ bhūpaṁ jagāda munisattamaḥ saṁtyupāyā mahīpāla pāpasyāsyāpanuttaye

To the king who spoke thus, the best of sages said: "O lord of the earth, there are means for the removal of this sin.

Verse 31 (padma.5.31.31)

brahmaghnasya kṛtaghnasya surāpasya mahāmate prāyaścittāni vartaṁte sarvapāpaharāṇi ca

Even for the killer of a Brahmin, the ungrateful, the drinker of liquor, O one of great wisdom, there exist penances that remove all sins,

Verse 32 (padma.5.31.32)

kṛcchraiścāṁdrāyaṇairdānairvrataiḥ saniyamairyamaiḥ pāpāni pralayaṁ yāṁti niyamādanutiṣṭhataḥ

through kricchra and chandrayana penances, through gifts, vows, together with restraints and disciplines — sins go to their destruction for one who duly performs them according to rule.

Verse 33 (padma.5.31.33)

dvayośca niṣkṛtirnāsti pāpapuṁjakṛtostayoḥ matyā govadhakartuśca nārāyaṇaviniṁdituḥ

But for two there is no expiation, however great the mass of sin they may otherwise have accrued: for the killer of a cow through negligence, and for the reviler of Narayana.

Verse 34 (padma.5.31.34)

gavāṁ yo manasā duḥkhaṁ vāṁcchatyadhamasattamaḥ sa yāti nirayasthānaṁ yāvadiṁdrāścaturdaśa

That basest of the base, who even in his mind wishes suffering for cows — he goes to hell for as long as fourteen Indras.

Verse 35 (padma.5.31.35)

yo'pi devaṁ hariṁ niṁdetsakṛddurbhāgyavānnaraḥ sa cāpi narakaṁ paśyetputrapautraparīvṛtaḥ

And that unfortunate man who reviles the god Hari even once — he too shall behold hell, surrounded by his sons and grandsons.

Verse 36 (padma.5.31.36)

tasmājjñātvā hariṁ niṁdangoṣu duḥkhaṁ samācaran kadāpi narakānmuktiṁ na prāpnoti nareśvara

Therefore, O lord of men, one who knowingly reviles Hari or causes suffering to cows never attains release from hell.

Verse 37 (padma.5.31.37)

ajñānaprāptagohatyā prāyaścittaṁ tu vidyate rāmabhaktaṁ tu dhīmaṁtaṁ yāhi tvamṛtuparṇakam

But for the killing of a cow that has occurred through ignorance, expiation does exist. Go, then, to Ritupparna, that wise devotee of Rama.

Verse 38 (padma.5.31.38)

sa vai samadṛśaḥ sarvāñchatrūnmitrāṇi paśyati tubhyaṁ kathiṣyati kṣipraṁ govadhasyāsya niṣkṛtim

He, of equal vision, regards enemies and friends alike; he will quickly tell you the expiation for this killing of the cow."

Verse 39 (padma.5.31.39)

tasya deśāṁstvamākrāmaṁstena nirvāsitaḥ purā vairibhāvaṁ parityajya gaccha tvamṛtuparṇakam

"Though you once invaded his lands and were banished by him, abandon your enmity, and go to Ritupparna."

Verse 40 (padma.5.31.40)

sa yadvadiṣyati kṣipraṁ tatkuruṣva samāhitaḥ yathā tvatkṛtapāpasya niṣkṛtirhi bhaviṣyati

Whatever he quickly tells you, do that with a composed mind, so that expiation for the sin you have committed may indeed come about.

Verse 41 (padma.5.31.41)

sa tu tadvacanaṁ śrutvā jagāma ṛtuparṇakam rāmabhaktaṁ ripau mitre samadṛṣṭyā samaṁjasam

Hearing these words, he went to Ritupparna, the devotee of Rama, just and even-sighted alike toward foe and friend.

Verse 42 (padma.5.31.42)

sa tasmai kathayāmāsa yajjātaṁ govadhādikam tasya pāpasya niṣkṛtyai hyupāyaṁ so'pyaciṁtayat

He related to him all that had happened, the killing of the cow and the rest; and he too pondered the means for the expiation of that sin.

Verse 43 (padma.5.31.43)

kṣaṇaṁ dhyātvātha taṁ rājā ṛtuparṇa ṛtaṁbharam uvāca prahasanvākyaṁ buddhimāndharmakovidaḥ

Having pondered a moment, King Ritupparna, wise and skilled in dharma, spoke smilingly to Ritambhara:

Verse 44 (padma.5.31.44)

ko'haṁ rājanmunīnāṁ vai purataḥ śāstravedinām tānhitvā kiṁ tu māṁ prāpto mūrkhaṁpaṁḍitamāninam

"Who am I, O king, before sages learned in the scriptures? Leaving them aside, why have you come to me, a fool who merely fancies himself learned?

Verse 45 (padma.5.31.45)

tava mayyasti cecchraddhā tadā kiṁcidbravīmyaham śṛṇuṣva naraśārdūla gaditaṁ mama sādaraḥ

Yet if you have faith in me, then I shall say something. Listen, O tiger among men, reverently to what I speak.

Verse 46 (padma.5.31.46)

bhaja śrīraghunāthaṁ tvaṁ karmaṇā manasā girā naiṣkāpaṭyena lokeśaṁ toṣayasva mahāmate

Worship glorious Raghunatha with deed, mind, and word; without deceit, O one of great wisdom, please that lord of the worlds.

Verse 47 (padma.5.31.47)

sa tuṣṭo dāsyate sarvaṁ tvaddhṛdisthaṁ manoratham ajñānakṛta gohatyāpāpanāśaṁ kariṣyati

Pleased, he will grant every desire that dwells in your heart; he will destroy the sin of the cow-killing done through ignorance.

Verse 48 (padma.5.31.48)

rāmaṁ smaraṁstvaṁ dharmātmandhenuṁ pālaya sattama dattvā dvijāya kanakaṁ pāpaniṣkṛtimāpsyasi

Remembering Rama, O righteous soul, tend the cow, O excellent one; and, giving gold to a Brahmin, you shall attain expiation of the sin."

Verse 49 (padma.5.31.49)

sumatiruvāca etacchrutvā tu tadvākyamṛtaṁbharanṛpastadā vidhāya rāmasmaraṇaṁ pūtātmā vratamācarat

Sumati said: Hearing these words, King Ritambhara then, undertaking the remembrance of Rama, his soul purified, performed the vow.

Verse 50 (padma.5.31.50)

pūrvavatpālayandhenuṁ jagāma vipinaṁ mahat rāmanāmasmarannityaṁ sarvabhūtahite rataḥ

Tending the cow as before, he went into the great forest, ever remembering the name of Rama, devoted to the welfare of all beings.

Verse 51 (padma.5.31.51)

tasmai tuṣṭā tu surabhiḥ provāca paritoṣitā rājanvaraya matto vai varaṁ hṛtsthaṁ manoratham

Then Surabhi, pleased and thoroughly satisfied, said to him: "O king, ask of me the boon, the desire that dwells in your heart."

Verse 52 (padma.5.31.52)

tadā provāca vai rājā putraṁ dehi manoramam rāmabhaktaṁ pitṛrataṁ svadharmapratipālakam

Then the king said: "Grant me a delightful son, a devotee of Rama, devoted to his father, an upholder of his own dharma."

Verse 53 (padma.5.31.53)

tuṣṭā dattvā varaṁ sāpi tasmai rājñe sutārthine jagāmādarśanaṁ devī kāmadhenuḥ kṛpāvatī

Pleased, she too, the compassionate goddess Kamadhenu, having granted the boon to that king who desired a son, vanished from sight.

Verse 54 (padma.5.31.54)

sa kāle prāptavānputraṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ rāmasevakam satyavatsaṁjñayāyuktamakarottatra tatpitā

In due time he obtained a son, a Vaishnava, a servant of Rama; his father there gave him the name Satyavat.

Verse 55 (padma.5.31.55)

satyavaṁtaṁ sutaṁ labdhvā pitṛbhaktiparaṁ mahān paramaṁ harṣamāpede śakratulyaparākramam

Having obtained the great son Satyavan, devoted to his father, of valor equal to Indra's, he attained supreme joy.

Verse 56 (padma.5.31.56)

sa rājā dhārmikaṁ putraṁ prāpya harṣeṇanirbharaḥ rājyaṁ tasminmahannyasya jagāma tapase vanam

That king, overflowing with joy at obtaining a righteous son, having entrusted his great kingdom to him, went to the forest for austerity.

Verse 57 (padma.5.31.57)

tatrārādhya hṛṣīkeśaṁ bhaktiyuktena cetasā nirdhūtapāpaḥ satanuragāddharipadaṁ nṛpaḥ

There, having worshipped Hrishikesha with a heart full of devotion, the king, his sins washed away, went with his very body to the abode of Hari.
