Chapter 31All chaptersChapter 33

Verse 1 (padma.5.32.1)

sumatiruvāca asāvapi nṛpaḥ saumya satyavānnāma viśrutaḥ nijadharmeṇa lokeśaṁ raghunāthamatoṣayat

Sumati said: "This king too, O gentle one, renowned by the name Satyavan, pleased the Lord of the worlds, Raghunatha, through his own dharma.

Verse 2 (padma.5.32.2)

asmai tuṣṭo ramānātho dadau bhaktimacaṁcalām nijāṁghripadme yajatāṁ durlabhāṁ puṇyakoṭibhiḥ

Pleased with him, the Lord of Lakshmi granted him unwavering devotion at his own lotus feet — a devotion rare even for worshippers possessed of tens of millions of merits.

Verse 3 (padma.5.32.3)

nityaṁ śrīraghunāthasya kathānakamanāturaḥ kurute sarvalokānāṁ pāvanaṁ kṛpayāyutaḥ

Free from affliction, filled with compassion, he ever recounts the tale of glorious Raghunatha, which purifies all the worlds.

Verse 4 (padma.5.32.4)

He who does not worship the god Raghunatha, Lord of Lakshmi, is struck by that very god with rods that are terrifying even to Yama.

Verse 5 (padma.5.32.5)

aṣṭamādvatsarādūrdhvamaśītivatsaro bhavet tāvadekādaśī sarvairmānuṣaiḥ kāritā'munā

From the eighth year onward, until the eightieth year — for that entire span he caused all men to observe the Ekadashi fast.

Verse 6 (padma.5.32.6)

tulasī vallabhā yasya kadācidyacchirodharām na muṁcati ramānātha pādapadmasraguttamā

He whom Tulsi loves — that excellent garland of the Lord of Lakshmi's lotus feet never at any time leaves his neck.

Verse 7 (padma.5.32.7)

ṛṣīṇāmapi pūjyoyamitareṣāṁ kathaṁ nahi raghunāthasmṛtiprītirdhūtapāpmā hatāśubhaḥ

He is worthy of worship even by sages — how then not by others? Delighting in the remembrance of Raghunatha, his sin is washed away, his misfortune destroyed.

Verse 8 (padma.5.32.8)

jñātvāyaṁ rāmacaṁdrasya vājinaṁ paramādbhutam āgatya tubhyaṁ saṁdāsyatyetadrājyamakaṁṭakam

Knowing this to be Ramachandra's most wondrous horse, he will come and hand over to you this kingdom, free of any thorn of opposition."

Verse 9 (padma.5.32.9)

tvayā yadgaditaṁ rājaṁstatte kathitamuttamam punaḥ kiṁ pṛcchase svāminnājñāpaya karomi tat

"Whatever you have said, O king, has now been told to you in full excellence; why do you ask again, my lord? Command, and I shall do it."

Verse 10 (padma.5.32.10)

śeṣa uvāca gato'śvastatpurāṁtastu nānāścaryasamanvitaḥ taṁ dṛṣṭvā janatāḥ sarvā rājñe gatvā nyavedayan

Shesha said: Then the horse, endowed with manifold wonders, went into the interior of that city; seeing it, all the people went and reported it to the king.

Verse 11 (padma.5.32.11)

janatā ūcuḥ ko'pyaśvaḥ sitavarṇena gaṁgājalasamena vai bhāle sauvarṇapatreṇa rājamānaḥ samāgataḥ

The people said: "Some horse, white in color like the waters of the Ganga, resplendent with a golden leaf-mark upon its brow, has arrived.

Verse 12 (padma.5.32.12)

tacchrutvā vacanaṁ ramyaṁ janānāṁ hṛdyamīritam tāḥ pratyāha hasanbhūpo jñāyatāṁ kasya vai hayaḥ

Hearing this pleasant speech, delightfully spoken by the people, the king said to them, smiling: "Let it be known whose horse this is."

Verse 13 (padma.5.32.13)

tāścainaṁ kathayāmāsuḥ śatrughnena prapālitaḥ āyātyaśvo mahībhartū rāmasya puramadhyataḥ

They told him: "O lord of the earth, this horse, protected by Shatrughna, has come from the midst of Rama's own city."

Verse 14 (padma.5.32.14)

rāmasya nāma sa śrutvā dvyakṣaraṁ sumanoramam jaharṣa citte subhṛśaṁ gadgadasvaracinhitaḥ

Hearing Rama's most delightful two-syllabled name, he rejoiced greatly in his heart, marked by a voice choked with emotion.

Verse 15 (padma.5.32.15)

mayāyodhyāpatirnityaṁ yo rāmaścintyate hṛdi tasyāśvaḥ sahaśatrughnaḥ samāyātaḥ puraṁ mama

"He whom I ever contemplate in my heart, the Lord of Ayodhya, Rama — his horse, together with Shatrughna, has come to my city.

Verse 16 (padma.5.32.16)

hanūmāṁstatra rāmāṁghrisevākartā bhaviṣyati kadācidapi yo rāmaṁ na vismarati mānase

There, too, must be Hanuman, the doer of service at Rama's feet, who never at any time forgets Rama in his mind.

Verse 17 (padma.5.32.17)

gacchāmi yatra śatrughno yatra mārutanaṁdanaḥ anye'pi yatra puruṣā rāmapādābjasevakāḥ

I shall go where Shatrughna is, where the son of the Wind is, and where other men, servants of Rama's lotus feet, also are.

Verse 18 (padma.5.32.18)

amātyamādideśātha sarvaṁ rājadhanaṁ mahat gṛhītvā tu mayā sārddhamāgaccha tvarayā yutaḥ

Then he commanded his minister: "Taking all the great royal wealth, come with me swiftly.

Verse 19 (padma.5.32.19)

yāsye'haṁ raghunāthasya hayaṁ pālayituṁ varam kartuṁ ca rāmapādābjaparicaryāṁ sudurlabhām

I shall go to guard the excellent horse of Raghunatha, and to perform that most rare service at the lotus feet of Rama."

Verse 20 (padma.5.32.20)

ityuktvā nirjagāmātha śatrughnaṁ prati sainikaiḥ tāvatpurīmatha prāpto rāmabhrātā sasainikaḥ

Having said this, he set out with his soldiers toward Shatrughna; and by then Rama's brother, with his own army, had reached the city.

Verse 21 (padma.5.32.21)

vīrā garjaṁti prabalā rathāḥ suninadaṁti ca jayaśaṁkhasvanāstatra veṇunādāśca sarvataḥ

Mighty heroes roared, chariots rumbled loudly; there sounded conch shells of victory and the notes of flutes on every side.

Verse 22 (padma.5.32.22)

āgatya satyavānrājā maṁtribhiḥ susamanvitaḥ caraṇe praṇipatyāsmai rājyaṁ prādānmahādhanam

King Satyavan, coming there, well accompanied by his ministers, bowed low at his feet and gave over his kingdom, rich in great wealth.

Verse 23 (padma.5.32.23)

śatrughnastaṁ tu rājānaṁ jñātvā rāmamanuvratam tadrājyaṁ tasya putrāya rukmanāmne dadau mahat

Shatrughna, recognizing that king as devoted to Rama, gave that great kingdom to his son, named Rukma.

Verse 24 (padma.5.32.24)

hanūmaṁtaṁ parīrabhya subāhuṁ rāmasevakam anyānvai rāmabhaktāṁśca parirabhya mahāyaśāḥ

Embracing Hanuman and Subahu, the servant of Rama, and embracing the other devotees of Rama too, that man of great renown —

Verse 25 (padma.5.32.25)

kṛtārthamiva cātmānaṁ mene satyasamanvitaḥ nanaṁda cetasi tadā śatrughnena samanvitaḥ

— that truthful one deemed himself as if fulfilled, and rejoiced in his heart then, together with Shatrughna.

Verse 26 (padma.5.32.26)

hayastāvadgato dūraṁ vīraiḥ suparirakṣitaḥ śatrughnastena bhūpena yayau vīrasamanvitaḥ

Meanwhile the horse had gone far, well guarded by heroes; Shatrughna, together with that king, went on, accompanied by heroes.
