Lomasha Tells the Story of Rama
Verse 1 (padma.5.36.1)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु विप्रेन्द्रो लोमशात्परमं महत् । पुनः पप्रच्छ तमृषिं सर्वज्ञं योगिनां वरम्
etacchrutvā tu vipreṁdro lomaśātparamaṁ mahat punaḥ papraccha tamṛṣiṁ sarvajñaṁ yogināṁ varam
Hearing this supreme, great teaching from Lomasha, the foremost of Brahmins again questioned that omniscient sage, best among yogis.
Verse 2 (padma.5.36.2)
आरण्यक उवाच। मुनिश्रेष्ठ वदैतन्मे पृच्छामि त्वां महामते । गुरवः कृपया युक्ता भाषंते सेवकेऽखिलम्
āraṇyaka uvāca muniśreṣṭha vadaitanme pṛcchāmi tvāṁ mahāmate guravaḥ kṛpayā yuktā bhāṣaṁte sevake'khilam
Aranyaka said: "O best of sages, tell me this — I ask you, O one of great wisdom. Gurus, filled with compassion, tell their servant everything.
Verse 3 (padma.5.36.3)
कोऽसौ रामो महाभाग यो नित्यं ध्यायते त्वया । तस्य कानि चरित्राणि वदस्व त्वं द्विजर्षभ
ko'sau rāmo mahābhāga yo nityaṁ dhyāyate tvayā tasya kāni caritrāṇi vadasva tvaṁ dvijarṣabha
Who is this Rama, O one of great fortune, whom you constantly meditate upon? What are his deeds — tell me, O bull among Brahmins.
Verse 4 (padma.5.36.4)
किमर्थमवतीर्णोऽसौ कस्मान्मानुषतां गतः । तत्सर्वं कथयाशु त्वं मम संशयनुत्तये
kimarthamavatīrṇo'sau kasmānmānuṣatāṁ gataḥ tatsarvaṁ kathayāśu tvaṁ mama saṁśayanuttaye
For what purpose did he descend, and why did he take on human form? Tell me all of this quickly, to remove my doubt."
Verse 5 (padma.5.36.5)
शेष उवाच। इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य मुनेः परमशोभनम् । लोमशः कथयामास रामचारित्रमद्भुतम्
śeṣa uvāca iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya muneḥ paramaśobhanam lomaśaḥ kathayāmāsa rāmacāritramadbhutam
Shesha said: Hearing this most excellent question of the sage, Lomasha related the wondrous deeds of Rama.
Verse 6 (padma.5.36.6)
लोकान्निरयसंमग्नाञ्ज्ञात्वा योगेश्वरेश्वरः । कीर्तिं प्रथयितुं लोके यया घोरं तरिष्यति
lokānnirayasaṁmagnāñjñātvā yogeśvareśvaraḥ kīrtiṁ prathayituṁ loke yayā ghoraṁ tariṣyati
Knowing the worlds sunk in hell, the Lord of the lords of yoga, in order to spread his glory in the world, by which one might cross that dreadful state —
Verse 7 (padma.5.36.7)
एवं ज्ञात्वा दयावार्धिः परमेशो मनोहरः । अवतारं चकारात्र चतुर्धा सश्रियान्वितः
evaṁ jñātvā dayāvārdhiḥ parameśo manoharaḥ avatāraṁ cakārātra caturdhā saśriyānvitaḥ
Knowing this thus, the supreme Lord, that ocean of compassion, delightful, took incarnation here in fourfold form, together with Shri.
Verse 8 (padma.5.36.8)
पुरा त्रेतायुगे प्राप्ते पूर्णांशो रघुनन्दनः । सूर्यवंशे समुत्पन्नो रामो राजीवलोचनः
purā tretāyuge prāpte pūrṇāṁśo raghunandanaḥ sūryavaṁśe samutpanno rāmo rājīvalocanaḥ
Formerly, when the Treta Yuga arrived, the fully-portioned one, delight of the Raghus, was born in the Solar dynasty as Rama, lotus-eyed.
Verse 9 (padma.5.36.9)
स रामो लक्ष्मणसखः काकपक्षधरो युवा । तातस्य वचनात्तौ तु विश्वामित्रमनुव्रतौ
sa rāmo lakṣmaṇasakhaḥ kākapakṣadharo yuvā tātasya vacanāttau tu viśvāmitramanuvratau
That Rama, companion of Lakshmana, a youth wearing the topknot-locks of boyhood, at his father's word, both of them, devoted to Vishvamitra —
Verse 10 (padma.5.36.10)
यज्ञसंरक्षणार्थाय राज्ञा दत्तौ कुमारकौ । दांतौ धनुर्धरौ वीरौ विश्वामित्रमनुव्रतौ
yajñasaṁrakṣaṇārthāya rājñā dattau kumārakau dāntau dhanurdharau vīrau viśvāmitramanuvratau
those two princes, self-controlled, bow-bearing, heroic, devoted to Vishvamitra, were given by the king for the protection of the sacrifice.
Verse 11 (padma.5.36.11)
पथि प्रव्रजतोस्तत्र ताटका नाम राक्षसी । संगता च वने घोरे तयोर्वै विघ्नकारणात्
pathi pravrajatostatra tāṭakā nāma rākṣasī saṁgatā ca vane ghore tayorvai vighnakāraṇāt
As those two journeyed along the way, there, in the dreadful forest, a demoness named Tataka encountered them, as a cause of obstruction.
Verse 12 (padma.5.36.12)
ऋषेरनुज्ञया रामस्ताटकां यमयातनाम् । प्रावेशयद्धनुर्वेदविद्याभ्यासेन राघवः
ṛṣeranujñayā rāmastāṭakāṁ yamayātanām prāveśayaddhanurvedavidyābhyāsena rāghavaḥ
By the sage's permission, Raghava, Rama, through his practice of the science of archery, sent Tataka to the torments of Yama.
Verse 13 (padma.5.36.13)
यस्य पादतलस्पर्शाच्छिला वासवयोगजा । अहल्या गौतमवधूः पुनर्जाता स्वरूपिणी
yasya pādatalasparśācchilā vāsavayogajā ahalyā gautamavadhūḥ punarjātā svarūpiṇī
By the mere touch of whose foot's sole, the stone born of Indra's union — Ahalya, Gautama's wife — was reborn again in her own true form.
Verse 14 (padma.5.36.14)
विश्वामित्रस्य यज्ञे तु सुप्रवृत्ते रघूत्तमः । मारीचं च सुबाहुं च जघान परमेषुभिः
viśvāmitrasya yajñe tu supravṛtte raghūttamaḥ mārīcaṁ ca subāhuṁ ca jaghāna parameṣubhiḥ
When Vishvamitra's sacrifice was well underway, that best of the Raghus slew Maricha and Subahu with his supreme arrows.
Verse 15 (padma.5.36.15)
ईश्वरस्य धनुर्भग्नं जनकस्य गृहे स्थितम् । रामः पंचदशे वर्षे षड्वर्षामथ मैथिलीम्
īśvarasya dhanurbhagnaṁ janakasya gṛhe sthitam rāmaḥ paṁcadaśe varṣe ṣaḍvarṣāmatha maithilīm
Shiva's bow, kept in Janaka's house, was broken; Rama, in his fifteenth year, then wed the Maithili princess, then six years old,
Verse 16 (padma.5.36.16)
उपयेमे विवाहेन रम्यां सीतामयोनिजाम् । कृतकृत्यस्तदा जातः सीतां संप्राप्य राघवः
upayeme vivāhena ramyāṁ sītāmayonijām kṛtakṛtyastadā jātaḥ sītāṁ saṁprāpya rāghavaḥ
married, by that wedding, the lovely Sita, not born of a womb. Then Raghava became fulfilled, having obtained Sita.
Verse 17 (padma.5.36.17)
ततो द्वादश वर्षाणि रेमे रामस्तया सह । सप्तविंशतिमे वर्षे यौवराज्यमकल्पयत्
tato dvādaśa varṣāṇi reme rāmastayā saha saptaviṁśatime varṣe yauvarājyamakalpayat
Then, for twelve years, Rama dwelt happily with her; in his twenty-seventh year, the crown-prince consecration was arranged.
Verse 18 (padma.5.36.18)
राजानमथ कैकेयी वरद्वयमयाचत । तयोरेकेन रामस्तु ससीतः सह लक्ष्मणः
rājānamatha kaikeyī varadvayamayācata tayorekena rāmastu sasītaḥ saha lakṣmaṇaḥ
Then Kaikeyi asked the king for two boons; by one of them, Rama, with Sita, together with Lakshmana —
Verse 19 (padma.5.36.19)
जटाधरः प्रव्रजतुवर्षाणीह चतुर्दश । भरतस्तु द्वितीयेन यौवराज्याधिपोऽस्तु मे
jaṭādharaḥ pravrajatuvarṣāṇīha caturdaśa bharatastu dvitīyena yauvarājyādhipo'stu me
matted-locked, was to go into exile for fourteen years here; and by the second boon, Bharata was to become the lord of the crown-princedom for her.
Verse 20 (padma.5.36.20)
जानकी लक्ष्मणसखं रामं प्राव्राजयन्नृपः । त्रिरात्रमुदकाहारश्चतुर्थेऽह्नि फलाशनः
jānakī lakṣmaṇasakhaṁ rāmaṁ prāvrājayannṛpaḥ trirātramudakāhāraścaturthe'hni phalāśanaḥ
The king sent Rama, with Janaki and his companion Lakshmana, into exile; for three nights he took only water for food, and on the fourth day he ate fruit.
Verse 21 (padma.5.36.21)
पंचमे चित्रकूटे तु रामस्थानमकल्पयत् । अथ त्रयोदशे वर्षे पंचवट्यां महामुने
paṁcame citrakūṭe tu rāmasthānamakalpayat atha trayodaśe varṣe paṁcavaṭyāṁ mahāmune
On the fifth day, at Chitrakuta, Rama's dwelling was established. Then, O great sage, in the thirteenth year, at Panchavati —
Verse 22 (padma.5.36.22)
रामो विरूपयामास शूर्पणखां निशाचरीम् । वने विचरतस्तस्य जानक्या सहितस्य च
rāmo virūpayāmāsa śūrpaṇakhāṁ niśācarīm vane vicaratastasya jānakyā sahitasya ca
Rama disfigured the demoness Shurpanakha, while he was wandering in the forest together with Janaki.
Verse 23 (padma.5.36.23)
आगतो राक्षसस्तां तु हर्तुं पापविपाकतः । ततो माघासिताष्टम्यां मुहूर्ते वृंदसंज्ञिते
āgato rākṣasastāṁ tu hartuṁ pāpavipākataḥ tato māghāsitāṣṭamyāṁ muhūrte vṛṁdasaṁjñite
Then the rakshasa came, driven by the ripening of his sin, to abduct her; then, on the dark eighth day of Magha, in the muhurta named Vrinda,
Verse 24 (padma.5.36.24)
राघवाभ्यां विना सीतां जहार दशकंधरः । तेनैवं ह्रियमाणा सा चक्रंद कुररी यथा
rāghavābhyāṁ vinā sītāṁ jahāra daśakaṁdharaḥ tenaivaṁ hriyamāṇā sā cakraṁda kururī yathā
Ravana, the ten-necked one, seized Sita in the absence of the two Raghavas; thus carried off, she wailed like a female osprey.
Verse 25 (padma.5.36.25)
रामरामेति मां रक्ष रक्ष मां रक्षसा हृताम् । यथा श्येनः क्षुधाक्रांतः क्रंदंतीं वर्तिकां नयेत्
rāmarāmeti māṁ rakṣa rakṣa māṁ rakṣasā hṛtām yathā śyenaḥ kṣudhākrāṁtaḥ kraṁdaṁtīṁ vartikāṁ nayet
"O Rama, Rama, save me, save me, taken by the rakshasa!" — just as a hawk, seized by hunger, carries off a crying quail,
Verse 26 (padma.5.36.26)
तथा कामवशं प्राप्तो रावणो जनकात्मजाम् । नयत्येवं जनकजां जटायुः पक्षिराट्तदा
tathā kāmavaśaṁ prāpto rāvaṇo janakātmajām nayatyevaṁ janakajāṁ jaṭāyuḥ pakṣirāṭtadā
so too, overcome by desire, Ravana carried off Janaka's daughter thus. Then Jatayu, king of birds,
Verse 27 (padma.5.36.27)
युयुधे राक्षसेंद्रेण स रावणहतोऽपतत् । मार्गशुक्लनवम्यां तु वसंतीं रावणालये
yuyudhe rākṣaseṁdreṇa sa rāvaṇahato'patat mārgaśuklanavamyāṁ tu vasaṁtīṁ rāvaṇālaye
fought with the lord of the rakshasas; struck down by Ravana, he fell. On the ninth of the bright half of Margashirsha, she dwelt in Ravana's abode.
Verse 28 (padma.5.36.28)
संपातिर्दशमे मास आचख्यौ वानरेषु ताम् । एकादश्यां महेंद्राद्रे पुःप्लुवे शतयोजनम्
saṁpātirdaśame māsa ācakhyau vānareṣu tām ekādaśyāṁ mahendrādre puḥpluve śatayojanam
In the tenth month, Sampati told the monkeys of her; on the eleventh, at Mount Mahendra, the leap of a hundred yojanas across the ocean occurred.
Verse 29 (padma.5.36.29)
हनूमान्निशि तस्यां तु लंकायां पर्यकालयत् । तद्रात्रिशेषे सीताया दर्शनं हि हनूमतः
hanūmānniśi tasyāṁ tu laṁkāyāṁ paryakālayat tadrātriśeṣe sītāyā darśanaṁ hi hanūmataḥ
Hanuman, that night, ranged about within Lanka; at the end of that night, Hanuman had his sight of Sita.
Verse 30 (padma.5.36.30)
द्वादश्यां शिंशपावृक्षे हनूमान्पर्यवस्थितः । तस्यां निशायां जानक्या विश्वासाय च संकथा
dvādaśyāṁ śiṁśapāvṛkṣe hanūmānparyavasthitaḥ tasyāṁ niśāyāṁ jānakyā viśvāsāya ca saṁkathā
On the twelfth, Hanuman remained stationed in the shinshapa tree; that night, there was conversation to establish trust with Janaki.
Verse 31 (padma.5.36.31)
अक्षादिभिस्त्रयोदश्यां ततो युद्धमवर्तत । ब्रह्मास्त्रेण चतुर्दश्यां बद्धः शक्रजिता कपिः
akṣādibhistrayodaśyāṁ tato yuddhamavartata brahmāstreṇa caturdaśyāṁ baddhaḥ śakrajitā kapiḥ
On the thirteenth, battle then took place with Aksha and the others; on the fourteenth, the monkey was bound by Indrajit with the Brahma weapon.
Verse 32 (padma.5.36.32)
वह्निना पुच्छयुक्तेन लंकाया दहनं कृतम् । पूर्णिमायां महेंद्राद्रौ पुनरागमनं कपेः
vahninā pucchayuktena laṁkāyā dahanaṁ kṛtam pūrṇimāyāṁ mahendrādrau punarāgamanaṁ kapeḥ
With fire attached to his tail, the burning of Lanka was performed; on the full moon, the monkey's return to Mount Mahendra took place.
Verse 33 (padma.5.36.33)
मार्गासितप्रतिपदः पंचभिः पथिवासरैः । पुनरागत्य षष्ठेऽह्नि ध्वस्तं मधुवनं किल
mārgāsitapratipadaḥ paṁcabhiḥ pathivāsaraiḥ punarāgatya ṣaṣṭhe'hni dhvastaṁ madhuvanaṁ kila
From the first day of the dark half of Margashirsha, over five days of the journey, he traveled; returning, on the sixth day, the Madhuvana garden was ravaged.
Verse 34 (padma.5.36.34)
सप्तम्यां प्रत्यभिज्ञानदानं सर्वनिवेदनम् । अष्टम्युत्तरफल्गुन्यां मुहूर्ते विजयाभिधे
saptamyāṁ pratyabhijñānadānaṁ sarvanivedanam aṣṭamyuttaraphalgunyāṁ muhūrte vijayābhidhe
On the seventh, the giving of the token of recognition and the report of everything took place; on the eighth, under Uttara Phalguni, in the muhurta named Vijaya,
Verse 35 (padma.5.36.35)
मध्यं प्राप्ते सहस्रांशौ प्रस्थानं राघवस्य च । रामः कृत्वा प्रतिज्ञां तु प्रयातो दक्षिणां दिशम्
madhyaṁ prāpte sahasrāṁśau prasthānaṁ rāghavasya ca rāmaḥ kṛtvā pratijñāṁ tu prayāto dakṣiṇāṁ diśam
when the sun reached its zenith, Raghava set out; having made his vow, Rama proceeded toward the southern direction:
Verse 36 (padma.5.36.36)
तीर्त्वाहं सागरमपि हनिष्ये राक्षसेश्वरम् । दक्षिणाशां प्रयातस्य सुग्रीवोऽप्यभवत्सखा
tīrtvāhaṁ sāgaramapi haniṣye rākṣaseśvaram dakṣiṇāśāṁ prayātasya sugrīvo'pyabhavatsakhā
"Crossing even the ocean, I shall slay the lord of the rakshasas." As he proceeded toward the south, Sugriva too became his companion.
Verse 37 (padma.5.36.37)
वासरैः सप्तभिः सिंधोः स्कंधावारनिवेशनम् । पौषशुक्लप्रतिपदस्तृतीयायावदंबुधेः
vāsaraiḥ saptabhiḥ siṁdhoḥ skaṁdhāvāraniveśanam pauṣaśuklapratipadastṛtīyāyāvadaṁbudheḥ
In seven days, the encampment was set up by the ocean; from the first day of the bright half of Pausha until the third, at the ocean,
Verse 38 (padma.5.36.38)
उपस्थानं ससैन्यस्य राघवस्य बभूव ह । बिभीषणश्चतुर्थ्यां तु रामेण सह संगतः
upasthānaṁ sasainyasya rāghavasya babhūva ha bibhīṣaṇaścaturthyāṁ tu rāmeṇa saha saṁgataḥ
Raghava's presence there, together with his army, took place; on the fourth, Vibhishana joined together with Rama.
Verse 39 (padma.5.36.39)
समुद्रतरणार्थाय पंचम्यां मंत्र उद्यतः । प्रायोपवेशनं चक्रे रामो दिनचतुष्टयम्
samudrataraṇārthāya paṁcamyāṁ maṁtra udyataḥ prāyopaveśanaṁ cakre rāmo dinacatuṣṭayam
On the fifth, counsel was undertaken for crossing the ocean; Rama performed a fast unto death, lying at the shore, for four days.
Verse 40 (padma.5.36.40)
समुद्रवरलाभश्च सहोपायप्रदर्शनम् । ततो दशम्यामारंभस्त्रयोदश्यां समापनम्
samudravaralābhaśca sahopāyapradarśanam tato daśamyāmāraṁbhastrayodaśyāṁ samāpanam
The boon from the ocean, along with the showing of the means, followed; then, from the tenth, the construction began, and on the thirteenth it was completed.
Verse 41 (padma.5.36.41)
चतुर्दश्यां सुवेलाद्रौ रामः सैन्यं न्यवेशयत् । पौर्णमास्यां द्वितीयां तं त्रिदिनैः सैन्यतारणम्
caturdaśyāṁ suveladrau rāmaḥ sainyaṁ nyaveśayat paurṇamāsyāṁ dvitīyāṁ taṁ tridinaiḥ sainyatāraṇam
On the fourteenth, at Mount Suvela, Rama stationed his army; on the full moon and the second of the next fortnight, over three days, the army was ferried across.
Verse 42 (padma.5.36.42)
तीर्त्वा तोयनिधिं रामो वानरेश्वरसैन्यवान् । रुरोध च पुरीं लंकां सीतार्थं सह लक्ष्मणः
tīrtvā toyanidhiṁ rāmo vānareśvarasainyavān rurodha ca purīṁ laṁkāṁ sītārthaṁ saha lakṣmaṇaḥ
Having crossed the ocean, Rama, with the army of the lord of monkeys, together with Lakshmana, besieged the city of Lanka for the sake of Sita.
Verse 43 (padma.5.36.43)
तृतीयादि दशम्यंतं निवेशश्च दिनाष्टकम् । शुकसारणयोस्तत्र प्राप्तिरेकादशे दिने
tṛtīyādi daśamyaṁtaṁ niveśaśca dināṣṭakam śukasāraṇayostatra prāptirekādaśe dine
From the third to the tenth, over eight days, the encampment was established; there, on the eleventh day, the arrival of Shuka and Sarana occurred.
Verse 44 (padma.5.36.44)
पौषासिताख्यद्वादश्यां सैन्यसंख्यानमेव च । शार्दूलेन कपींद्राणां सहसारोपवर्णनम्
pauṣāsitākhyadvādaśyāṁ sainyasaṁkhyānameva ca śārdūlena kapīṁdrāṇāṁ sahasāropavarṇanam
On the twelfth of the dark half of Pausha, the counting of the army took place, along with the description by Shardula of the leaders of the monkey forces.
Verse 45 (padma.5.36.45)
त्रयोदश्या अमावास्यां लंकायां दिवसैस्त्रिभिः । रावणः सैन्यसंख्यानं रणोत्साहं तदाकरोत्
trayodaśyā amāvāsyāṁ laṁkāyāṁ divasaistribhiḥ rāvaṇaḥ sainyasaṁkhyānaṁ raṇotsāhaṁ tadākarot
From the thirteenth to the new moon, over three days, in Lanka, Ravana carried out a counting of his army and roused enthusiasm for battle.
Verse 46 (padma.5.36.46)
प्रययावंगदो दौत्यं माघशुक्लाद्यवासरे । सीतायाश्च ततो भर्तुर्मायामूर्द्धादिदर्शनम्
prayayāvaṁgado dautyaṁ māghaśuklādyavāsare sītāyāśca tato bharturmāyāmūrddhādidarśanam
On the first day of the bright half of Magha, Angada went forth as an envoy; then Sita was shown, by illusion, the head of her husband, and the rest.
Verse 47 (padma.5.36.47)
माघद्वितीयादि दिनैः सप्तभिर्यावदष्टमी । रक्षसां वानराणां च युद्धमासीच्च संकुलम्
māghadvitīyādi dinaiḥ saptabhiryāvadaṣṭamī rakṣasāṁ vānarāṇāṁ ca yuddhamāsīcca saṁkulam
From the second of Magha for seven days, until the eighth, a fierce battle took place between the rakshasas and the monkeys.
Verse 48 (padma.5.36.48)
माघशुक्लनवम्यां तु रात्राविंद्रजिता रणे । रामलक्ष्मणयोर्नागपाशबंधः कृतः किल
māghaśuklanavamyāṁ tu rātrāviṁdrajitā raṇe rāmalakṣmaṇayornāgapāśabaṁdhaḥ kṛtaḥ kila
On the ninth of the bright half of Magha, at night, in battle, by Indrajit, the binding of Rama and Lakshmana with the Naga-noose was carried out.
Verse 49 (padma.5.36.49)
आकुलेषु कपीशेषु निरुत्साहेषु सर्वशः । नागपाशविमोक्षार्थं दशम्यां पवनोऽजपत्
ākuleṣu kapīśeṣu nirutsāheṣu sarvaśaḥ nāgapāśavimokṣārthaṁ daśamyāṁ pavano'japat
When the monkey lords were all thrown into confusion and utterly bereft of enthusiasm, on the tenth, in order to release them from the Naga-noose, the Wind whispered —
Verse 50 (padma.5.36.50)
कर्णे स्वरूपं रामस्य गरुडागमनं ततः । एकादश्यां च द्वादश्यां धूम्राक्षस्य वधः कृतः
karṇe svarūpaṁ rāmasya garuḍāgamanaṁ tataḥ ekādaśyāṁ ca dvādaśyāṁ dhūmrākṣasya vadhaḥ kṛtaḥ
— in Rama's ear his own true nature; then followed the coming of Garuda. On the eleventh and twelfth, the slaying of Dhumraksha took place.
Verse 51 (padma.5.36.51)
त्रयोदश्यां तु तेनैव निहतः कंपनो रणे । माघशुक्लचतुर्दश्या यावत्कृष्णादिवासरम्
trayodaśyāṁ tu tenaiva nihataḥ kaṁpano raṇe māghaśuklacaturdaśyā yāvatkṛṣṇādivāsaram
On the thirteenth, by that very one, Kampana was slain in battle. From the fourteenth of the bright half of Magha until the first day of the dark half —
Verse 52 (padma.5.36.52)
त्रिदिनेन प्रहस्तस्य नीलेन विहितो वधः । माघकृष्णद्वितीयायाश्चतुर्थ्यं तं त्रिभिर्दिनैः

रामेण तुमुले युद्धे रावणो द्रावितो रणात् । पंचम्या अष्टमीयावद्रावणेन प्रबोधितः
rāmeṇa tumule yuddhe rāvaṇo drāvito raṇāt paṁcamyā aṣṭamīyāvadrāvaṇena prabodhitaḥ
in tumultuous battle, Ravana was driven from the field by Rama. From the fifth to the eighth, Kumbhakarna was awakened by Ravana.

कुंभकर्णस्तदा चक्रेऽभ्यवहारं चतुर्दिनम् । कुंभकर्णो दिनैः षड्भिर्नवम्यास्तु चतुर्दशीम्
kuṁbhakarṇastadā cakre'bhyavahāraṁ caturdinam kuṁbhakarṇo dinaiḥ ṣaḍbhirnavamyāstu caturdaśīm
Kumbhakarna then feasted for four days. Over six days, from the ninth to the fourteenth,

रामेण निहतो युद्धे बहुवानरभक्षकः । अमावास्यादिने शोकादवहारो बभूव ह
rāmeṇa nihato yuddhe bahuvānarabhakṣakaḥ amāvāsyādine śokādavahāro babhūva ha
Kumbhakarna, devourer of many monkeys, was slain in battle by Rama. On the day of the new moon, out of grief, a pause in fighting occurred.

फाल्गुनादिप्रतिपदश्चतुर्थ्यंतं चतुर्दिनैः । बिसतंतुप्रभृतयो निहताः पंचराक्षसाः
phālgunādipratipadaścaturthyaṁtaṁ caturdinaiḥ bisataṁtuprabhṛtayo nihatāḥ paṁcarākṣasāḥ
From the first day of Phalguna to the fourth, over four days, Bisatantu and the other rakshasas, five in number, were slain.

पंचम्याः सप्तमी यावदतिकायवधस्तथा । अष्टम्याद्वादशी यावन्निहतौ दिनपंचकात्
paṁcamyāḥ saptamī yāvadatikāyavadhastathā aṣṭamyādvādaśī yāvannihatau dinapaṁcakāt
From the fifth to the seventh, the slaying of Atikaya took place; from the eighth to the twelfth, over five days, two demons were slain.

निकुंभकुंभावूर्ध्वं तु मकराक्षस्त्रिभिर्दिनैः । फाल्गुनासितद्वितीयायां दिने शक्रजिता जितम्
nikuṁbhakuṁbhāvūrdhvaṁ tu makarākṣastribhirdinaiḥ phālgunāsitadvitīyāyāṁ dine śakrajitā jitam
Nikumbha and Kumbha, and then Makaraksha, over three days were slain; on the second day of the dark half of Phalguna, victory was won by Indrajit.

तृतीयादिसप्तम्यंतं दिनपंचकमेव च । ओषध्यानयनव्यग्रादवहारो बभूव ह
tṛtīyādisaptamyaṁtaṁ dinapaṁcakameva ca oṣadhyānayanavyagrādavahāro babhūva ha
From the third to the seventh, over five days, on account of being occupied with fetching the herbs, a truce occurred.

ततस्त्रयोदशीयावद्दिनैः पंचभिरिंद्रजित् । लक्ष्मणेन हतो युद्धे विख्यातबलपौरुषः
tatastrayodaśīyāvaddinaiḥ paṁcabhiriṁdrajit lakṣmaṇena hato yuddhe vikhyātabalapauruṣaḥ
Then, over five days, until the thirteenth, Indrajit, renowned for his strength and prowess, was slain in battle by Lakshmana.

चतुर्दश्यां दशग्रीवो दीक्षां प्रापावहारतः । अमावास्यादिने प्रायाद्युद्धाय दशकंधरः
caturdaśyāṁ daśagrīvo dīkṣāṁ prāpāvahārataḥ amāvāsyādine prayādyuddhāya daśakaṁdharaḥ
On the fourteenth, the ten-necked one took up initiation out of the pause in battle; on the day of the new moon, the ten-necked one set out for battle.

चैत्रशुक्लप्रतिपदः पंचमीदिनपंचकैः । रावणे युद्ध्यमाने तु प्रचुरो रक्षसां वधः
caitraśuklapratipadaḥ paṁcamīdinapaṁcakaiḥ rāvaṇe yuddhyamāne tu pracuro rakṣasāṁ vadhaḥ
From the first day of the bright half of Chaitra to the fifth, over five days, as Ravana fought, a great slaughter of rakshasas took place.

चैत्रषष्ठ्याष्टमी यावन्महापार्श्वादि मारणम् । चैत्रशुक्लनवम्यां तु सौमित्रेः शक्तिभेदनम्
caitraṣaṣṭhyāṣṭamī yāvanmahāpārśvādi māraṇam caitraśuklanavamyāṁ tu saumitreḥ śaktibhedanam
From the sixth to the eighth of Chaitra, the slaying of Mahaparshva and others took place; on the ninth of the bright half of Chaitra, the piercing of Saumitri by the Shakti weapon occurred.

कोपाविष्टेन रामेण द्रावितो दशकंधरः । द्रोणाद्रिरांजनेयेन लक्ष्मणार्थमुपाहृतः
kopāviṣṭena rāmeṇa drāvito daśakaṁdharaḥ droṇādrirāṁjaneyena lakṣmaṇārthamupāhṛtaḥ
Overcome by rage, Rama drove the ten-necked one from the field; the son of Anjana brought the Drona mountain for Lakshmana's sake.

दशम्यामवहारोभूद्रात्रौ युद्धे तु रक्षसाम् । एकादश्यां तु रामाय रथं मातलिसारथिः
daśamyāmavahārobhūdrātrau yuddhe tu rakṣasām ekādaśyāṁ tu rāmāya rathaṁ mātalisārathiḥ
On the tenth, a pause occurred, at night, in the rakshasas' battle; on the eleventh, Matali the charioteer brought a chariot for Rama —

प्रेरितो वासवेनाजावर्पयामास भक्तितः । कोपवानथ द्वादश्या यावत्कृष्णचतुर्दशी
prerito vāsavenājāvarpayāmāsa bhaktitaḥ kopavānatha dvādaśyā yāvatkṛṣṇacaturdaśī
sent by Indra, offered it with devotion in the battle. Then, filled with rage, from the twelfth until the fourteenth of the dark half —

अष्टादशदिनै रामो रावणं द्वैरथेऽवधीत् । संग्रामे तुमुले जाते रामो जयमवाप्तवान्
aṣṭādaśadinai rāmo rāvaṇaṁ dvairathe'vadhīt saṁgrāme tumule jāte rāmo jayamavāptavān
— over eighteen days, Rama slew Ravana in single combat. As the battle grew tumultuous, Rama attained victory.

माघशुक्लद्वितीयायाश्चैत्रकृष्ण चतुर्दशीम् । सप्ताशीतिदिनेष्वेव मध्यं पंचदशाहकम्
māghaśukladvitīyāyāścaitrakṛṣṇa caturdaśīm saptāśītidineṣveva madhyaṁ paṁcadaśāhakam
From the second of the bright half of Magha to the fourteenth of the dark half of Chaitra — in these eighty-seven days, with a middle interval of fifteen days,

युद्धावहारः संग्रामो द्वासप्तति दिनान्यभूत् । संस्कारो रावणादीनाममावस्या दिनेऽभवत्
yuddhāvahāraḥ saṁgrāmo dvāsaptati dinānyabhūt saṁskāro rāvaṇādīnāmamāvasyā dine'bhavat
the fighting and its pauses, the battle, together came to seventy-two days. The funeral rites of Ravana and the others took place on the day of the new moon.

वैशाखादि तिथौ राम उवास रणभूमिषु । अभिषिक्तो द्वितीयायां लंकाराज्ये विभीषणः
vaiśākhādi tithau rāma uvāsa raṇabhūmiṣu abhiṣikto dvitīyāyāṁ laṁkārājye vibhīṣaṇaḥ
From the first day of Vaishakha, Rama remained on the battlefields; on the second, Vibhishana was consecrated to the kingdom of Lanka.

सीताशुद्धिस्तृतीयायां देवेभ्यो वरलंभनम् । हत्वा चिरेण लंकेशं लक्ष्मणाग्रज एव सः
sītāśuddhistṛtīyāyāṁ devebhyo varalaṁbhanam hatvā cireṇa laṁkeśaṁ lakṣmaṇāgraja eva saḥ
On the third, Sita's purification took place, and the receiving of boons from the gods; having at last slain the Lord of Lanka, that very elder brother of Lakshmana —

गृहीत्वा जानकीं पुण्यां दुःखितां राक्षसेन तु । आदाय परया प्रीत्या जानकीं स न्यवर्तत
gṛhītvā jānakīṁ puṇyāṁ duḥkhitāṁ rākṣasena tu ādāya parayā prītyā jānakīṁ sa nyavartata
took the sorrowing, pure Janaki, taken by the rakshasa, and, with supreme affection, having received Janaki, turned homeward.

वैशाखस्य चतुर्थ्यां तु रामः पुष्पकमाश्रितः । विहायसा निवृत्तस्तु भूयोऽयोध्यां पुरीं प्रति
vaiśākhasya caturthyāṁ tu rāmaḥ puṣpakamāśritaḥ vihāyasā nivṛttastu bhūyo'yodhyāṁ purīṁ prati
On the fourth of Vaishakha, Rama, mounted upon the Pushpaka chariot, returned through the sky once more toward the city of Ayodhya.

पूर्णे चतुर्दशे वर्षे पंचम्यां माधवस्य तु । भरद्वाजाश्रमे रामः सगणः समुपाविशत्
pūrṇe caturdaśe varṣe paṁcamyāṁ mādhavasya tu bharadvājāśrame rāmaḥ sagaṇaḥ samupāviśat
With the fourteenth year complete, on the fifth of Madhava, Rama, with his retinue, took his seat at Bharadvaja's hermitage.
Verse 75 (padma.5.36.75)
नंदिग्रामे तु षष्ठ्यां स भरतेन समागतः । सप्तम्यामभिषिक्तोऽसावयोध्यायां रघूद्वहः
naṁdigrāme tu ṣaṣṭhyāṁ sa bharatena samāgataḥ saptamyāmabhiṣikto'sāvayodhyāyāṁ raghūdvahaḥ
On the sixth, at Nandigrama, he was joined by Bharata; on the seventh, that bearer of the Raghu line was consecrated in Ayodhya.

दशैकाधिकमासांस्तुचतुर्दशाहानि मैथिली । उवास राम रहिता रावणस्य निवेशने
daśaikādhikamāsāṁstucaturdaśāhāni maithilī uvāsa rāma rahitā rāvaṇasya niveśane
Maithili dwelt, separated from Rama, in Ravana's dwelling for eleven months and fourteen days.
Verse 77 (padma.5.36.77)
द्विचत्वारिंशक वर्षे रामो राज्यमकारयत् । सीतायाश्च त्रयस्त्रिंशद्वत्सराश्च तदाभवन्
dvicatvāriṁśaka varṣe rāmo rājyamakārayat sītāyāśca trayastriṁśadvatsarāśca tadābhavan
In his forty-second year, Rama ruled the kingdom; and Sita's age was then thirty-three years.
Verse 78 (padma.5.36.78)
स चतुर्दशवर्षांते प्रविश्य च पुरीं प्रभुः । अयोध्यां मुदितो रामो हत्वा रावणमाहवे
sa caturdaśavarṣāṁte praviśya ca purīṁ prabhuḥ ayodhyāṁ mudito rāmo hatvā rāvaṇamāhave
At the end of fourteen years, that lord, joyful Rama, having slain Ravana in battle, entered the city of Ayodhya.

भ्रातृभिः सहितस्तत्र रामो राज्यमथाकरोत् । राज्यं प्रकुर्वतस्तस्य पुरोधा वदतां वरः
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitastatra rāmo rājyamathākarot rājyaṁ prakurvatastasya purodhā vadatāṁ varaḥ
There, together with his brothers, Rama then ruled the kingdom. While he governed the kingdom, the family priest, best of speakers —

अगस्त्यः कुंभसंभूतिस्तमागंता रघोः पतिम् । तद्वाक्याद्रघुनाथोऽसौ करिष्यति हयक्रतुम्
agastyaḥ kuṁbhasaṁbhūtistamāgaṁtā raghoḥ patim tadvākyādraghunātho'sau kariṣyati hayakratum
— Agastya, born of the pot, will come to that lord of the Raghus; at his word, this Raghunatha will perform the horse-sacrifice.
Verse 81 (padma.5.36.81)
तस्यागमिष्यति हयो ह्याश्रमे तव सुव्रत । तस्य योधाः प्रमुदिता आयास्यंति तवाश्रमम्
tasyāgamiṣyati hayo hyāśrame tava suvrata tasya yodhāḥ pramuditā āyāsyaṁti tavāśramam
His horse, O one of good vows, will come to your hermitage; his joyful warriors will come to your hermitage.

तेषामग्रे रामकथाः करिष्यसि मनोहराः । तैः साकं त्वमयोध्यायां गंतासि वै द्विजर्षभ
teṣāmagre rāmakathāḥ kariṣyasi manoharāḥ taiḥ sākaṁ tvamayodhyāyāṁ gaṁtāsi vai dvijarṣabha
Before them you shall recount delightful tales of Rama; together with them, O bull among Brahmins, you shall indeed go to Ayodhya.

दृष्ट्वा राममयोध्यायां पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणम् । तत्क्षणादेव संसारवार्धिनिस्तारवान्भव
dṛṣṭvā rāmamayodhyāyāṁ padmapatranibhekṣaṇam tatkṣaṇādeva saṁsāravārdhinistāravānbhava
Seeing Rama in Ayodhya, whose eyes are like lotus petals, that very instant become one who has crossed the ocean of samsara.

इत्युक्त्वा मां मुनिवरो लोमशः सर्वबुद्धिमान् । उवाच ते किं प्रष्टव्यं तदाहमवदं हि तम्
ityuktvā māṁ munivaro lomaśaḥ sarvabuddhimān uvāca te kiṁ praṣṭavyaṁ tadāhamavadaṁ hi tam
Having said this to me, the excellent, all-wise sage Lomasha asked: "What more is there for you to ask?" — then I said to him:

ज्ञातं त्वत्कृपया सर्वं रामचारित्रमद्भुतम् । त्वत्प्रसादादवाप्स्येऽहं रामस्य चरणांबुजम्
jñātaṁ tvatkṛpayā sarvaṁ rāmacāritramadbhutam tvatprasādādavāpsye'haṁ rāmasya caraṇāṁbujam
"By your grace I have learned everything of Rama's wondrous deeds; by your favor I shall obtain the lotus feet of Rama."

मया नमस्कृतः पश्चाज्जगाम स मुनीश्वरः । तत्प्रसादान्मयावाप्तं रामस्य चरणार्चनम्
mayā namaskṛtaḥ paścājjagāma sa munīśvaraḥ tatprasādānmayāvāptaṁ rāmasya caraṇārcanam
Bowed to by me, that lord of sages then departed. By his favor I obtained the worship of Rama's feet.
Verse 87 (padma.5.36.87)
सोऽहं स्मरामि रामस्य चरणावन्वहं मुहुः । गायामि तस्य चरितं मुहुर्मुहुरतंद्रितः
so'haṁ smarāmi rāmasya caraṇāvanvahaṁ muhuḥ gāyāmi tasya caritaṁ muhurmuhuratandritaḥ
I, thus, remember Rama's two feet continually, again and again; I sing his deeds, again and again, without weariness.
Verse 88 (padma.5.36.88)
पावयामि जनानन्यान्गानेन स्वांतहारिणा । हृष्यामि तन्मुनेर्वाक्यं स्मारंस्मारं तदीक्षया
pāvayāmi janānanyāngānena svāṁtahāriṇā hṛṣyāmi tanmunervākyaṁ smāraṁ smāraṁ tadīkṣayā
I purify other people through my heart-captivating song; I rejoice, recalling again and again that sage's word, through his very gaze.
Verse 89 (padma.5.36.89)
धन्योऽहं कृतकृत्योऽहं सभाग्योऽहं महीतले । रामचंद्र पदांभोज दिदृक्षा मे भविष्यति
dhanyo'haṁ kṛtakṛtyo'haṁ sabhāgyo'haṁ mahītale rāmacaṁdra padāṁbhoja didṛkṣā me bhaviṣyati
Blessed am I, fulfilled am I, fortunate am I upon this earth; the longing to behold Ramachandra's lotus feet shall be mine.
Verse 90 (padma.5.36.90)
तस्मात्सर्वात्मना रामो भजनीयो मनोहरः । वंदनीयो हि सर्वेषां संसाराब्धितितीर्षया
tasmātsarvātmanā rāmo bhajanīyo manoharaḥ vaṁdanīyo hi sarveṣāṁ saṁsārābdhititīrṣayā
Therefore Rama, delightful, is to be worshipped with one's whole being; he is to be venerated by all who desire to cross the ocean of samsara.
Verse 91 (padma.5.36.91)
तस्माद्यूयं किमर्थं वै प्राप्ताः को वानराधिपः । यागं करोति धर्मात्मा हयमेधं महाक्रतुम्
tasmādyūyaṁ kimarthaṁ vai prāptāḥ ko vānarādhipaḥ yāgaṁ karoti dharmātmā hayamedhaṁ mahākratum
Therefore, for what purpose have you come? Who is this lord of monkeys — that righteous soul performing the great sacrifice, the horse-sacrifice?
Verse 92 (padma.5.36.92)
तत्सर्वं कथयंत्वत्र यां तु वाहस्य पालने । स्मरंतु रघुनाथांघ्रिं स्मृत्वा स्मृत्वा पुनः पुनः
tatsarvaṁ kathayaṁtvatra yāṁ tu vāhasya pālane smaraṁtu raghunāthāṁghriṁ smṛtvā smṛtvā punaḥ punaḥ
Let all of that be told here; and let those engaged in guarding the horse remember Raghunatha's feet, remembering, remembering again and again.
Verse 93 (padma.5.36.93)
इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य मुनेर्विस्मयमागताः । रघुनाथं स्मरंतस्ते प्रोचुरारण्यकं मुनिम्
iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya munervismayamāgatāḥ raghunāthaṁ smaraṁtaste procurāraṇyakaṁ munim
Hearing these words of the sage, filled with wonder, they, remembering Raghunatha, spoke to the sage Aranyaka.
